DAILY CASSOWARY
A publication of the Stout Lout Karmic Ale Corporation

Editorial by the Venerable Seventh Karmapadapa Lama, His Karmic Scholarly Eminence Sid Jones

As the Rumbi Lama (peace be upon him) says: "Football is a metaphor for redemption, hahaha."

Rumbipura's entry into the world of international sports, therefore, is well represented by the decision to seek an entry into the 55th World Cup. Five is of course the holiest of numbers, being the age of the Rumbi Lama's favourite teddy bear, Mister Poopy. It recalls also the glories of World Cup Five, hosted by the First Rumbi Lama's home country, Tanah Burung. To repeat the fifth number a second time is to exalt its value and to honour the Rumbi Lama (peace be upon him).

Therefore, glories are certain to reflect upon the Rumbipura squad. Named for the flightless and lovely bird, the cassowary, our boys, girls, and spider-human hybrids are certain to excel.

Already, in the Baptism of Fire, the Cassowaries ran up much karmic debt from the world of football, by graciously losing most matches while under a vow of silence. In losing, as is well known, we gain merit. That merit can then be traded in in the karmic balance for wins later. Thus in losing we are exalted, and in defeat we gain karma and chances to win in the future. Karma to be later expended upon goals at just the right time.

As in the journey of the people of Rumbi out of the darkness of other lands, when the Fifth Di-zzi Lama lost his sandal and then found an even nicer sandal, with a pretty conchshell pattern in toile that supported his ankles and had marvellous arch support -- yea, in just such a manner the loss of many matches in the rookie tournament is certain to be met with greater glories to come.

Image
The Di-zzi Lama's holy sandal is the inspiration for this model, available for a mere 10 whims from Stout Lout Karmic Footwear Corporation. Act now! Supplies are limited!

For verily, forsooth, my friends: Did not the Rumbi Lama himself say, after an especially hard day of praying over a hot stove for your miserable souls to be reincarnated in an acceptable form: "I like shoes!" Yes. Yes, he did say that (peace be upon him).

It is then, entirely fitting that the Cassowaries will play their opening match wearing these Stout Lout sandals. A pair can be yours, too, for a small tithe to be placed in the begging bowl of the Yellow-Hatted Stout Monks of Graçipura. (The Stout Monks hereby deny the rumours that proceeds will be used to buy extra ale for His Eminence. Everyone knows I don't like ale.)

"I won’t soothe your pain
I won’t ease your strain
I’ll seek you out,
Flay you alive
One more word and you won’t survive
And I’m not scared of your stolen power
I see right through you any hour

The lyrics flowed into Alexio Del Nieran's ears, canceling out any other noise. It was just him, the goal, and the ball. And the rest of the national team but that wasn't the point. They were at the national team training grounds in Eliodoro along the coastline. They were training, always training. Determined to bring World Cup glory to Erathore. They would bring glory. Nieran knew it. He felt it.

One more word and you won’t survive
And I’m not scared of your stolen power
I see right through you any hour
I won’t soothe your pain
I won’t ease your strain
You’ll be waiting in vain
I got nothing for you to gain

More lyrics. More peaceful. More in the mood. The song was his own personal theme song. It brought him peace, quiet, and power. When waiting for a match to kick off, he would play it mentally and the sounds of the crowd would fade out. There was no crowd. Just the referees, the players and the ball. There were no referees or players. Just Nieran and the ball. He also played it mentally when he was taking his free kicks. Which is what he was practicing know. He cranked up the volume on his SMPD as he placed the ball around 27 yards away from the goal.

I’m taking it slow
Feeding my flame

He saw the jeering faces of his teammates who made up the three man wall in between ball and the goal. He saw the smiling face of Roberto Bennedetto in goal. Smiling yet concentrating. Blocking a Nieran freekick meant the world to Erathi goalkeepers.

Shuffling the cards of your game

Nieran started his run up. The burst of acceleration. The windmill motion of his arm. His eyes that were locked onto that one little section of the ball. His mind making tons of small calculations and decisions. He planted his foot.

And just in time
In the right place
Suddenly I will play my ace

He stuck the ball. It went over the well and seemed to be heading in a straight line that would have go up and right of the goal by a substantial bit. This caused Roberto Bennedetto to relax for a half a second as he thought Nieran had missed. But then the ball dipped and bent. Dipped down and bent left. Way, way left. It bent incredibly.

I won’t soothe your pain
I won’t ease your strain

Swish. Net. Pure, sweet net. A beautiful goal. The upper right corner of the net. The free kick that had clubs clambering for Nieran's signature on a contract. The free kick that earned respect from fans watching him. The free kick that caused many a beer to be downed at pubs when he scored like that in a game. The free kick. Nieran's free kick.

Goal.

Qazox' Road to World Cup 55 schedule and preview

Postby Qazox » Mon Apr 18, 2011 9:59 pm

(OOC: LOL.. I'm in a group with my puppet... and it's now offically 1994 in Qazox)

The group draw has just been completed for the qualifying stages and Qazox was placed in group 15, of 15; and will face a few familar nations, if not from the pitch; then from other sporting competitions over the years.

SCHEDULE:
    MD 1: at Erathore
MD 2: vs. Kandorith @ Estadia Pika, Pika City; Capacity: 84,562.
    MD 3: at Coffee Cakes
MD 4: vs. Meguroko @ New Bruxen Hotel & Casino Field, New Bruxen; Capacity: 77,721.
MD 5: vs. Sameba @ New Bruxen Hotel & Casino Field, New Bruxen; Capacity: 77,721.
MD 6: at The Babbage Islands
MD 7: vs. Cabric @ Qazian Memorial Stadium II, Qazox City; Capacity: 100,052.
    MD 8: BYE DATE
MD 9: vs. Pretty Awesome Persons @ Rockport Stadium, Rockport; Capacity: 90,000.
MD10: vs. Daliusia @ Rockport Stadium, Rockport; Capacity: 90,000
    MD11: at Meddicia
MD12: vs. Erathore @ SaxerDome II, SaxerVila; Capacity: 91,150.
    MD13: at Kandorith
MD14: vs. Coffee Cakes @ Ganja Vodka Stadium, Fromburg. Capacity: 94,500.
    MD15: at Meguroko
    MD16: at Sameba
MD17: vs. The Babbage Islands @ Qazian Memorial Stadium II, Qazox City; Capacity: 100,052.
    MD18: at Cabric
    MD19: BYE DATE
    MD20: at Pretty Awesome Persons
    MD21: at Daliusia
MD22: vs. Meddicia @ SaxerDome II, SaxerVila; Capacity: 91,150.

Of the other 10 teams in the group, Qazox has little footballing history with any of the nations, but the 8 games against Erathore, TBI, Cabric and PAP will likely be the toughest. While nothing is certain in World Cup qualifying, this seems to be a group that Qazox should be able to qualify from. 6 of the first 10 games are at home, and only trips to Erathore and TBI look like possible losses in the first half. In the 2nd half, there are only 4 home games, but Erathore and TBI visit Qazox, while away games at Cabric, PAP and Meguroko look like potential stumbling blocks. Of the 20 games, Qazox will likely be favored in 14 or 15, and they should get between 14-16 wins. OUR PREDICTION: 14-3-3 45pts, 2nd in Group behind The Babbage Islands.

A quick look at Group 15

Postby Erathore » Mon Apr 18, 2011 11:20 pm

Group 15: World Cup 55
A quick preview

Meguroko #16 | | Kandorith #297 | | Cabric #278 | | Erathore #72 | | The Babbage Islands #5 | | Meddicia #117 | | Sameba #397 | | Daliusia #345 | | Qazox #29 | | Pretty Awesome Persons #46 | | Coffee Cakes #345

aaaaaEssentially, everyone in Group 15 is playing for second spot as The Babbage Islands will win most of its games with both verve and poise. The number 5 team in the world appear to be on form in the habit of winning. Several of TBI's players are key players at some of Cafundéuian clubs so that is just a testament to their skill.
aaaaaTo revise the first sentence of this quick preview, most of Group 15 will be playing for third place. Erathore, Qazox, and Pretty Awesome Persons will be the only serious competitors for 2nd place. Although though anything can happen, Qazox looks like the favorites if by going from international ranking. However, Gonzalez and Figo from PAP could mount a serious challenge, as could Malvolio, Lucifer, Cesc, and Nieran from Erathore. 2nd place is really up for grabs between those three teams
aaaaaAll eyes will be on Erathore's front men as Mericci is replaced by Lucifer and the young Cesc Celestino looks to make an impact from the bench. Lucifer and Malvolio complement each other perfectly. Lucifer Andrea's versatility and ball skills combined with Gaespare Malvolio's speed and powerful shots will give defenses much to worry about. Directly behind them in the central attacking midfield slot, Alexio Del Nieran will look to increase his already impressive reputation. The skipper of the national team, known internationally for his free kicks and his general overall skill, will look to add to add some goals to his position as Erathore's most capped player. Erathore does stand a good chance after qualifying for the Interzonals in the previous World Cup, before placing third in their interzonal group and being eliminated to the CoH. In the Cup of Harmony, Erathore finished 4th in the tournament. Using this experience and most of the starting lineup from the aforementioned tournaments, Erathore could cause some trouble in Group 15.

Predictions: The Babbage Islands takes first. Erathore, Qazox, and Pretty Awesome Persons will finish very closely to each other
Talking Points: Cabric's odd…we don't even know, TBI's strong squad, the battle between Erathore, Qazox, and PAP
Players to Watch: Alexio Del Nieran [ERA], Cesc Celestino [ERA], Lucifer Andrea [ERA], Jerry Kirkpatrick [TBI], Jason Olson [TBI], Fransisco Gonzalez [PAP], Robert Figo [PAP]

Inacayal's bag dropped to the grass making a loud noise. He had just arrived at the first day of practise with the national team. He was still groggy from the flight long flight and the metro from Vonghurst ran late but even though he was a quarter-hour late it didn't look as if he had missed much more than a speech by Jeff Parker or some chit-chat with others on the national team.

Looking to the centre of the pitch he could see the team gathered around Parker, who, like always insisted on wearing his kit from the time he himself played with the Nats. From what he could tell, the team chosen for this campaign was, for the most part, not that surprising. There were only two brand new faces in the bunch. The rest had been with the national team in the past, a fact which comforted him. By no means did he want a repeat of World Cup 52 where more than half the players chosen had no experience with the national team.

Looking away from the assembled players, Parker signaled for Mojica to join the assembled team. Inacayal complied and jogged out to the centre circle. Once he made it to his place, he looked around at the other guys to get a better sense of who he was going to spend the better part of the next month with. As he looked around, he saw Jimmy London, who lost out on the starting position to the much older Inacayal, shoot a menacing glance at him. Inacayal didn't make too much of it and quickly diverted his attention to the Jeff who stood immediately to his right.

"What took you so long?", asked Jeff.

"Train delay.", replied Inacayal truthfully,

"I see," said Parker before filling Inacayal in on the little they had gone over during Inacayal's absence, "Well, your in luck. We hadn't discussed much and were about to go over the schedule which, I had just received word of from Brett."

With his suspicions confirmed, Inacayal nodded.

"So, first off, as per tradition in the World Cup, we will play a slate of friendlies. For those who haven't heard, we will open our campaign with the match against Novikov," as the word 'Novikov' came off Jeff's lips more than a few faces around the circle brightened, "That match will be away."

The bright faces that appeared when Parker announced that the team would open against Novikov snapped back to either neutral or even a downright frown when Parker informed them that the match against Novikov would be an away match. Many of them dreaded the fact that they would have to play in Novikov a fear made even worse when one considers the potential backlash that they could face because of the often inhuman treatment that visiting Novy's faced during the last match-up between the two teams as well as the Cup of Harmony.

"We will then stay in Novikov for a match the following day against some shit team for the 51+ cup. Afterwards, it's back to the isle for matches against Cotdelapoms and Polar Islandstates."

Inacayal's mind (as well as a few others on the team) snapped back to the previous meeting between the two teams where the Islandstates beat Virabia two goals to none. He did not play that match but he did see it all from the sideline. It was safe to say from the look on his face that he didn't want a repeat.

Parker continued, "After that, it's eleven days of group play. Now, the draws literally just happened, so this information is still fresh and I have not had the time to properly deconstruct it but, from what I've seen, we are in the group of death. Not that it really matters, we had no chance to qualify but, with this kind of group we may be lucky to even see much of a rankings boost. Six of the seven teams have previously made the World Cup, so you can pretty much expect 11 days of tough football. The ones we especially have to worry about are Dorian and Sonya"

A random voice that Inacayal thought belonged to Rory Harris cracked a joke, "Yea, gotta be real careful not to stare at their tits the whole time!"

Most around the circle, including Inacayal chuckled but Parker, a noted supporter of extending gender equality into football (a measure which the VFA has repeatedly opposed), kept a straight face. "First, that's not funny. I've seen those girls play once or twice and let me tell you, they are better footballers than the lot of you. So don't go around thinking that just because you have a dick between your legs means that your automatically better than someone."

Jeff paused so what he said could sink in a little bit. Some of the defenders of gender-segregated football had an unpleasant look on their face but, they all kept quiet.

"Moving on, the two other nations that we really have to be concerned about are the Landau Institute and Valladares. Both of which can and will probably beat us but, I don't want to go out without putting up a good fight. As for the rest of the group, there really should be little concern but, given our checkered history in football, especially against teams that we think should be easy wins, we really have to watch our backs for this one."

Wondering who the other two World Cup qualifiers were, Inacayal seized a lull in Parkers speech to ask a question on the matter.

"Oh. The other two, perhaps three are Errinundera and Taeshan. Both haven't been active in the World Cup all to recently though, so they shouldn't be a concern. Also, if my memory serves me correctly, Churchma has also made the final 32 but, I'm not sure. Still, we shouldn't take them lightly. Anyways, since I don't want to take up too much more time from the rest of our practise, I will say that y'all can see the rest of the schedule on these cards that I'll ask you to pass around. As for the other friendlies, we'll talk about those as they get closer. No sense in planning for those now. We got enough on our plate as it is."

Once Inacayal got his card, he looked down at it. In the top left corner was the logo for the 55th World Cup and opposite it was the VFA logo. Below it was black text detailing the schedule.

After looking at the card for a second, he had to put it away. Jeff had called for the team to run laps.

The World Cup was on it's way.

Groups announced for 55th Football World Cup
Kulverint looking to sail through this time

Kulverint's team have finally grouped together ready to kick off their qualifying campaign for World Cup 55. The team are now hoping to make it three qualifications in a row, and to build on 3rd place in the group stages last time. A hope for the squad is to reach the knockout stages for the first time. However all this is months away as of now. The aim, though, has been made easier by the relatively lucky group draw which Kulverint found themselves in, which can be found below. Only one team is ranked higher than Kulverint, and, if you remember, we beat Pays de Horreur, then ranked 10th, on the way to qualifying for world cup 53, so hope is there for, hopefully, at least a home victory over Sarzonia.

GROUP 8

The Group of Death. Who Will Survive?

Aguazul 1-1 Dorian and Sonya (2-2 AET, 3-2 PKs)

The match had remained in the forefront of the Mystical Unicorns minds for nearly four years. So close they had come to winning the match, and they had as yet to fully put the loss behind them. It was a match that would go down in history as one of the most hard-fought of all time. And in the resulting penalties that decided the match, J’hys, Alura, and Vaniel had all seen their attempts fail. Vaniel had taken it the worse as her shot would have kept the Unicorns even.

Now the two sides were set to play once more, and to the Unicorns the Friendly status held little meaning. This was a chance for some kind of redemption. But that would have to wait until the midpoint of qualification. Somehow Maelwen Maridilyon would have to get the girls to focus on what was possibly the toughest qualification group they had ever faced.

GROUP 11
278th Espiañola
9th Dorian and Sonya
201st Taeshan
24th Valladares
UR Errinundera
363rd The Kaiser Colonies
314th Seleucius
278th Sarzoclava
101st Virabia
39th Landau Institute
51st Churchma

And only two can advance. Rankings be damned, this group is loaded. The Unicorns should be expected to advance, but they will have to play some great football to do so. Valladares and Landau Institute are very capable sides who could easily take the group if the Unicorns stumble. Churchma is overdue and in nearly the same spot as we were when we went on our title run. Virabia is much better than their rank would suggest so they should be watched as well.

And then even the bottom contains potential trouble in a resurgent Taeshan and BoF hotshots Sarzoclava, and Espianola. But for some reason Errinundera sticks out at the bottom as a returning unranked side. Gut feeling says they over perform, just as we did in our own unranked return. Don’t be surprised to see them push the top seeds until the very end.

Chicanan Daily Rabbler
A Report On National Nonsense

Let The Drama Commence!
Press Has Field Day With NCFA as World Cup Draw Announced

Winslow Morgan, St. John's

The North Chicanan FA came under fire from all directions over the last few days, as the nation prepares for it's returning debut at the World Cup.

Yep, just like old times.

After the sort-of scandal drummed up by The National Post and CitySport over how and why the FA entered the Baptism of Fire, all press agencies have fired lobs at the Stanley Street unit over the handling of the national side as the nation waited to see if we might be able to finish in the middle of the pack in group play this cycle. Both the Post and Tele24 attacked the FA for the failure of the national side to secure any international friendlies, claiming the FA's own argument for competing in the BoF was more than enough to send the side all around the NS world trying to improve the team's scoring and defenses. Tele24 English reported an internal memo from the FA was leaked to the broadcaster, stating the group had chosen not to do any friendlies during the current cycle, but for the national side to play scrimmages against the National Premier sides during the intermediate break as well as on the sides two off dates on the calendar. CitySport reporters were critical of the memo, attacking the FA for not publicly commenting on Tele24's report as well as the lack of announced national friendlies to fill it's station with.

The other major news channels - NK and Channel 2 - got their voices heard on the issue, coming in favor of the FA's refusal to find international competition. With NK's press corp being decidedly pro-mediterranean, the lack of travel would suit the broadcaster fine as it puts the team in line with the region's own views of isolation. Ch.2, on the other hand, used the BoF as reason enough, doubting that national manager Damien O'Neill has the FA's full support to stay on as coach through the full qualifying period and it would be a waste of funds for the team to travel and lose, thus creating more concern for the long-term stability of the management.

New drama happened after the official announcement of the Qualifying team, with national player Xavier Fjail being moved to the bench after a successful run during the BoF. However, the glossys have been all over Fjail becoming a father with wife Shareen, and their twin sons - Xavi and Timon - being featured on the covers of three different glossys this past week. So some have quietly noted Fjail may have asked for the exemption in lieu of the agreement between him and O'Neill during the BoF. Of course, with James' Pratt's wife expecting her third child with the Sussex starter and fellow Sussex player Marc James in the midst of a public divorce from his longtime beau Daniel, the glossys have been nothing but pro-national team drama for a few months.

And no, we don't know if James was caught with any player on the national side. Or if his husband was. Stop asking us, we just watch the telly!

In less dramatic news, the draw was released and the Hoops will be considered the #7 side in group 15. And the 22 dates to decide who will be traveling to Aguazul and Delaclava. Yowza that's a long, drawn out process.

Kelssek (# 15)
Tretskivucia (# 32)
Tynelia (# 45)
Unitopolis (# 65)
Bergnovinaia (# 82)
The Kangaroo Republic (# 198)
North Chicanan (#269)
Pohjoisland (# 297)
Chunnan (# 314)
German zerabithea (# 353)
Kaputrania (# 393)

We're thrilled to know we've heard of four sides in this draw, with two being known of in the Old Times before the War. Kelssek we just beat in World Cup Hockey and we know we've played them in the old past in footy, while German zeabithea is a familiar name. The Kangaroo Republic and Chunnan recently played with us in the clustefluff that was the BoF as maybe was another group or two, but hell if we know, we got lost and tired scanning all 64 teams in the ladder. What we find rather interesting is that the five high sides are all rather clustered together, followed by a massive collapse in rankings to TKR, with another massive drop until you find us piddling around at #269. We think the gap might be more difficult to manage than we'd hope but we think the 10-points the FA wished for in qualifying might be more than manageable.

Note for the National Readers: We made four World Cups as Chicanada: 23, 27, 29, 30. We had qualified for 31 but we went all extinct like due to The Great War. Food for thought!

Group 13 Schedule
MD01: at Bergnovinaia
MD02: vs German zerabithea (at Hard Rock Arena, St. John's)
MD03: at Unitopolis
MD04: vs Chunnan (Tele24 Park, Neuchantel)
MD05: at Kelssek
MD06: vs Tretskivucia (Hollish Republic Stadium, Bomen)
MD07: vs Pohjoisland (at Kodiak Memorial Park, Douala)
MD08: at Tynelia
MD09: off
MD10: at The Kangaroo Republic
MD11: vs Kaputrania (at Stallion Arena, Township)
MD12: vs Bergnovinaia (at National Square, Southampton)
MD13: at German zerabithea
MD14: vs Unitopolis (at SuperKings Arena, Longstreet)
MD15: at Chunnan
MD16: vs Kelssek (at Shamrock Field, St.John's)
MD17: at Tretskivucia
MD18: at Pohjoisland
MD19: vs Tynelia (at City Reds Fieldhouse, Astur)
MD20: off
MD21: vs The Kangaroo Republic (at Free State Arena, Provincetown)
MD22: at Kaputrania

When guessing which teams will qualify, we're at a bit of a loss. Logic says to go with Kelssek and Tretskivucia but we know WC logic never works right. With the five high seeds all bunched together and with The Kangaroo Republic playing well, it could be wide open. But we're giving early guesses anyways:

Group Winner: Kelssek
Qualifier: Unitopolis
We're Finishing: 5th...with maybe 28 points.

Tuesday, 19th of April,
Dear Diary...

So, today we released the roster for the world cup and it seems as if world cup fever is finally sweeping the nation! Our performance in the baptism of fire was disappointing to say the least, but now we are officially ranked! Yes, 258th! To me, that sounds awful, but after looking at the list it seems even worse. But, I suppose that it is expected, considering this is our world cup debut.

I honestly can't wait! I must admit that I am partial to a bit of football and to see my fine nation on the stage is definitely something I'm looking forward to seeing. I mean, its the first time Albertasby have been in a competition as big as this! *Inserts piece of paper with group 2 on.

Albundania - Ranked 7th in the world
Burchadinger - Ranked 58th in the world
American Island - Unranked in the world
Andreass - Ranked 297th in the world
Albertasby - Ranked 258th in the world
Traila - Ranked 345th in the world
Slazenagara - Ranked 95th in the world
Pays de Horreur - Ranked 26th in the world
Sarrbia - Ranked 314th in the world
Mantwenic - Ranked 36th in the world
Cheergirls - Ranked 185th in the world

That's our group right there, and as I look at it, my pessimistic attitude seems to be coming out more. We're the fifth worst team in the group so qualifying is not looking likely. Ah well! Until tomorrow,
Isabella Holden

* * * Six months before present * * *

The bright sun shone down from the blue sky over Urajbina, warming every face even through the brightly colored tarps hanging above the white marble and red brick stands. The crowds below were a sea of yellow, red, and blue, patriotically singing. This was going to be a good day, thought Ushadithi Ghavujirjiam. She squinted as she gazed out the window, up into the light. All was well, or it was to be well.

She lowered her face and took in her more immediate surroundings. She was sitting in a lovely chair, adorned with brown plush and elegant golden designs. A full table of hors d'œuvre had been prepared in the back of the dim luxury box, lit with a glowing orange torch. Several waiters were lurking in the shadows, prepared to fetch whatever she might need. All was well, or it was to be well.

Ghavujirjiam stared out the window again, with a satisfied smile. The sounds of the pre-game extravaganza flared back into her consciousness. The players were lining up opposite one another for the national anthem of the Federation. But was that tiny corner of the stadium, where fans were dressed in blue and silver, still chanting? This was beyond disrespectful. Of course, she thought, it was those crooks from across the bay. They could be as rude as they liked; they had another thing coming. All was well, or it was to be well.

It was the fifteenth matchday of the 5246 First Division season. Ghavujirjiam, the undisputed dictator of Kagdazka and Pazhujebu, had come to watch the favorite club of the military junta: Urajbina ZL, the team with by far the most patriotic fans. They were currently in fourth place, though that position belied how well the team was doing... it was only because of a bit of bad luck they were there. Urajbina's opponents on the day were their arch-enemies.

Juvapanam. The rebellious city across the mouth of Rahish Bay from Urajbina had become known in recent months as the seat of dissident power for a disrespectful and unpatriotic revolutionary movement known as the Partisans. The city empathized with the rebels, and if Ghavujirjiam could have gotten away with it, she would have had the city razed to the ground a long time ago.

But that wasn't all. Juvapanam's football club, known by the same name, had won the last two First Division championships. They had no right to do so, thought Ghavujirjiam; they were a mid-table club that weren't ever supposed to accomplish anything. Urajbina were the powerhouse. Urajbina were supposed to be winning championships. And yet there Juvapanam were once again, only two points ahead of Urajbina in the table, and yet light years ahead in terms of position; sitting in second and ready to pounce for a third straight title.

Luckily, things were destined to change. She looked over at the gap-toothed but well-dressed "businessman" standing at the window with her, hands clasped behind his back. He was smiling too, eminently sure of what was about to happen.

"Everything's been arranged. Those bastards in blue and silver will be silent by the end of ninety minutes. I have been assured of it." He grinned an even broader grin.

The match began. Ghavujirjiam was not actually a major football fan, but she knew how much it meant to her subjects, so she worked very hard to try and appreciate it. Juvapanam started out with a lot of possession in the games opening minutes, but they spent most of the game playing it around the back line of defense. The Urajbina fans became restless, hissing and at last chanting in unison.

Your city is useless, your team's just as bad
We've always had twice the support you've ever had
You think you're a champion but look at your team
They've all got the Syph and they'll never get clean!

Ghavujirjiam cynically smiled. They'd run these criminals out of town on a rail. Urajbina would win this match, jump ahead of Juvapanam in the table, and put the term "Invincibles" (as applied to Juvapanam) asleep for good.

By the twentieth minute, it was clear that something was wrong with Juvapanam. All of the players looked dejected or angry, and they seemed unwilling to even move the ball out of their own half. The home fans loved it, only chanting louder. The wasn't even a quarter complete, and the Urajbinians sensed a blowout on the way.

So when Speratus Ošafi made a courageous run down the right, simply sprinting past the lackluster-looking pair of Sorthern Baral Qaavigaaq and Zarblese Virginia Lomi, and cut inside before back-heeling Akbarabadi Zohaib Khan into space back out on the right, the home fans stood in unison. They sensed something was about to happen here in the 27th minute. Khan had Krytenian Warren Kennedy-Worthington wide open down the field. A lengthy through ball was pitch perfect, and Kennedy-Worthington slotted it home.

Ghavujirjiam flew up out of her chair, shouting in victory.

"I told, you, Ms. Premier," the shady-looking businessman leered, "it's all been arranged."

Across the stadium, the Juvapanam fans were silent, watching the match in a gloom, somehow aware that they were destined to lose. But that wasn't enough for the Urajbina fans, who needed to rub it in.

Your players aren't even trying
None of them give a shit
Or worse they've all been paid off
You're on the wrong end of a fix
Go back to your cesspool and die!
Go back to your cesspool and die!

The Juvapanam fans didn't react well to this, shouting vitriol back at their foes, but they were drowned out by another stadium-wide chant:

Who are ya? Who are ya? Who are ya?

Meanwhile, on the pitch, things were going from bad to worse for the sky-and-silver-clad visitors. Every time they got possession, they either gave the ball away cheaply, shot from forty yards out, or played it around the back some more. None of the players were showing any joy for the game, any of the spark that had twice made them champions.

Half time couldn't come soon enough. In truth, the visiting fans were glad it was only one nil.

Down in the dressing rooms, Šušan'ikara Ghur stared at his feet. Maybe it was time to retire, after all. Government officials pressured him every day to end his career, but even at forty one years old, he loved this game. Yet if anything could destroy that love, it was a match like this. He looked up at the number four locker, sitting empty. It once belonged to Fušia Oujadda, the short little teenager who'd once lit up the dressing room with her vibrant grin and positive sense of humor. What he wouldn't give to be with her at Ranca Toco...

Juvapanam's Khytennan manager, Roger Guzman, stormed in. He was young, and looked it. It was obvious that Ghur was older than Guzman, and that made it difficult for the manager to have any authority when the players looked to their captain for leadership, not the man in the dugout.

But Guzman snapped. He wasn't going to put up with this any more. He glared at all of them. He knew something had been arranged. He'd never seen what a fix looked like, but this is what he had always imagined it would look like.

"I'm only going to ask this once. What the hell is going on?"

It was silent until a small, shy, female voice at the back of the dressing room spoke up.

"Coach Guzman?"

"Pirdassia?" It was the team's twenty-one-year-old center back, Pirdassia Bawuah. She was notoriously quiet, so it was a surprise to hear from her.

"It's an arranged result."

"I know that, Pirdassia. What I want to know is why it's been arranged. And how it's been arranged."

Pirdassia started crying. Her close friend, Zarblese left back Virginia Lomi, put her arm around the tall African girl's shoulder.

"They threatened us," said right back Jahat Chahachim, leaning back against a locker with a towel draped over his face, as if he was ashamed. "The Pazhujebi players, at least. My fiancee is locked in a jail cell on Šede Island as we speak. Pirdassia's father has been accused of a murder he didn't commit. And... and Grandpa's son... he hasn't been seen in a week."

Guzman stopped dead in his tracks. He was a father himself. "Is that true, Šušan'ikara?"

The captain was staid. "Yeah," he answered gruffly.

Jahat continued. "They told all of us that if we lost this match, our family members would be all right."

"'They' meaning..."

"The regime."

"Did they do the same thing to all of you?" Guzman asked in the direction of Astograth's Edorta Urrustoy.

The bearded central midfielder shrugged apathetically. "No. We aren't from Juvapanam. But they paid us. A lot."

Guzman let the silence of that hang in the air. After a moment, he pointed at the ceiling. "Do you all hear that?"

The players looked at each other. "No," said the Pocoan striker Hakan Mendez.

"Exactly. The Juvapanam fans are sitting right above us. Listen to me, people. I'm not from the Federation. Over half of the starting eleven of this team isn't either. But I will tell you something I do know. In repressed societies, football is sometimes the only place where people can show dissent. Where people can exercise the freedom they are fundamentally entitled to as human beings.

"This country needs change. This country needs liberty. But it also needs something, or someone, or a group of someones, to rally behind. It needs a proud symbol of what the Federation can be. We are that symbol, whether we like it or not. We are that last symbol of hope. And now the regime is trying to take that last symbol away.

"Are you going to let them take it? Those of you who have compromised family members: would your loved ones want you to let them take it? What would they say if they saw you sell your integrity like this? And at the expense of the people's last symbol of hope. Pirdassia," Guzman gently asked the still-silently-weeping girl, "your father was welcomed into Juvapanam when he was a penniless immigrant from Africa. What would your father say if you sold your integrity?"

"He'd be ashamed," she said softly.

"He'd be ashamed, that's right. Well you know what? It's not too late to make him proud instead. Stand up, you lot."

The players all obeyed.

"What you do out there in the second half is up to you. But I will tell you this. There's going to be someone watching you from the most luxurious luxury box there is in this stadium. And she's trying to take away your dignity. Are you going to let her?"

Ghavujirjiam took a swig off of a grotesquely over-decorated glass chalice. This was going to be fun, she thought. A right bloodbath. The second half was beginning, and the Juvapanam fans were silent, tails between their legs.

And yet there the Juvapanam players were, all standing in a line in front of those very fans. Lomi, Bawuah, Qaavigaaq, Imupeesh, Mendez, Chahachim, Urrustoy, Ghur, Tnetennba, Hochassi, and Iamaxiro, arms locked around each others shoulders, looking right at their own fans. And were they singing something?

The match kicked off. Ghavujirjiam knew right away that something was very, very wrong.

It was just seconds after kickoff. Ghur collected the ball in midfield, used a stepover to lose his marker, and then began to sprint down the pitch. It was like watching an eighteen-year-old run. He didn't look forty-one at all.

There was Hochassi on the outside. Hochassi cut back in. No one marked Tnetennba at the top of the box. A hard shot...

...and Urajbina were leading no longer. The shellshocked home fans could only stare, mouths agape.

Juvapanam's travelling fans section erupted. They began to sing in full voice.

Glory, glory, Juvapanam!
Glory, glory, Juvapanam!
Glory, glory, Juvapanam!
We're going to win the league!

"Over my dead body," the Premier muttered venomously under her breath at them.

Five minutes later, and the home side couldn't get the ball out of their own half. At last! There was Aleksei Vazavorski in possession! Until...

CRUNCH! Vazavorski was airborne, thrown entirely off his feet, before slamming face-first into the grass like a bag of rocks. Like a missile, Urrustoy had thrown his feet at the ball and mercilessly won it without even having touched Vazavorski. The home crowd groaned; even they knew it wasn't a foul. The Astograthian played the ball out to Chahachim, who wasted no time getting down the flank and whipping in an early cross...

...oh no, thought Ghavujirjiam. Mendez was totally unmarked, and Urajbina's goalkeeper was in no-man's land, unsure whether to charge or not. With a clinical finish, it was two one to the champions.

"It's all been arranged, you say?" the Premier whispered ominously.

"Y-y-yes, my l-l-lady. I p-p-personally spoke to several of the players. I don't know what's going on."

"I do," she responded furiously, staring across at the now teeming section of celebrating Juvapanam fans. "You're about to die."

It was only going to get worse for the shaking "businessman." In the 59th minute, Urajbina's panicked defense tried to clear a ball out of their own box. But the ball caromed off of Mendez's head, ricocheting to Qaavigaaq's feet...

...and after an easy tap in it was three one. Ten minutes later, Juvapanam won a string of corners. Urajbina's keeper valiantly saved the first few, but it was only a matter of time before the sky and silver scored again. It was Bawuah who finally ended the spell, heading in Ghur's service by using her towering frame to head the ball in and make the lead three. The young defender sprinted the entire length of the pitch to leap into the stands with the Juvapanam supporters. Tears were streaming down her face. Her fans supported her by singing "Glory, Glory Juvapanam" again and unfurling a gigantic banner, which read:

We Shall Be Free

It was the 86th minute, and the match was all but over. And yet Juvapanam were still turning the screw in Urajbina's half. Every player was still at full stretch for every ball. A frustrated Zohaib Khan came in with two feet against the ankles of the Zarblese striker Kimeileandro Iamaxiro, and the referee had no choice but to show him red. Ghur proudly stepped up to take the 25-yard free kick.

He curled it towards the far post with lethal pace. The Urajbina keeper had no chance.

It was five one. Not only were Juvapanam winning, they were rubbing salt in the wound. When Ghur went to celebrate, he didn't go to the away fans or hug his teammates. He simply jogged to the center of the pitch, turned, and stared right up at Ghavujirjiam's suite.

Looking directly into the Premier's eyes, he saluted.

Ghavujirjiam could only stare back in a humiliated fury.

With the victory, Juvapanam were thrust into first place. They never left the position again for the rest of the season, winning their third title in a row.

The Federation, meanwhile, was at a boiling point.

A-Z Of Unitopolitan Football

Postby Unitopolis » Tue Apr 19, 2011 11:51 am

For the duration of this World Cup, we'll be making an A-Z of Unitopolitan football, featuring the good, the bad and the ugly from the beautiful game in Unitopolis.

A is for... Athletic Stanza

No article about Unitopolitan football could be complete without mentioning Athletic Stanza. The most succesful club in the history of the Superliga, with 16 titles, the second most succesful club in terms of UFA Cups (6) and a powerhouse of the national game, they are supported by millions of people in Unitopolis and around the world. Founded in 1913 as competition for Zolka 1906, Athletic Stanza was nearly disbanded in 1918 when their stadium burned down. Their cross-city rivals allowed them to play at Zolka Park for two years, an act of generosity which effectively kept the club alive.

Fast forward 93 years and Athletic Stanza are playing at the largest football stadium in Unitopolis (Topaz Stadium) as Zolka rot in the second division, but the clubs have retained a rivalry and fans of one often hold the other in contempt. Stanza have won leagues in 1973, 1976, 1977, 1979, 1980, 1983, 1985, 1989, 1993, 1994, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2008. While they've dominated domestically, their international form leaves a lot to be desired, with a TQCC Play-off appearance and Globe Cup Eliminatory Stage loss the peak of their achievements.

Despite this, the club still has an extremely illustrious history, with club legends such as defender John Bowes, who made 703 appearances for the club between 1979 and 1991 and the club's record goalscorer Coreninho, who scored over 400 goals between 1997 and 2011, when he retired. The club's home kit is black and red stripes, virtually unchanged from the team of 1913. The away kit varies from bright-yellow to sky blue, and this season they'll be wearing the latter.

B is for... Jack Beade

The first ever coach of the national team and the only Unitopolitan manager to enjoy extended success overseas, Jack Beade is as deserving a figure as any to be remembered for his contribution to Unitopolitan football. A less than illustrious playing career was cut short by injury, and Beade retired age 29, having played for FC Mostov 1896, Krazaky BK and Zamba Rangers. His managerial career was outstanding however.

Under his guidance, Unitopolis finished 3rd in the Introduction of Fire, our first foray into the world of international football. Following a poor start to the qualification campaign for World Cup 51, with 5 losses in 8 games, Beade was sacked by the UFA and replaced with Aleksandr Zukov. Despite the disappointing end to his reign, Beade was hired by Elesbury FC of Mantwenic just weeks after his departure. It was to be an inspired move by the Elesbury board, as Beade brought them two successive league titles. He then took charge of the Mantwenic national side, taking them to within a few points of qualification for the World Cup. He left after World Cup 53, having improved the team's WCC ranking by 11 places.

He stayed out of the game for a year, until he returned to manage New Dublin Dragons. The Dragons won a league under him, however he left after a disagreement with the board. Following Aaron Frey's resignation following World Cup 54, there were rumours that Beade was to return as manager of the national team, however he dispelled these himself, saying that he wasn't yet ready for the job again. He currently lives in Zolka, Unitopolis.

The Sporting Gazette

Yet another chance to disappoint ourselves.

Yes, the greatest sporting spectacle known to man/woman/bear/elf/dwarf(/whatever other species plays in it) has come round again, the World Cup. And this time the cup will be held in Aguazul and Delaclava, two nations that until now hadn't had the chance to host the most prestigious tournament in the NSverse but had done more than enough to deserve that chance. Anyways, before we lose stylistic accuracy, we must inform you foreign readers that domestic expectations of the Eastfield Lodge have plummeted, even though the team had won two trophies since that painful exit on the last day of World Cup 54 qualifying and have climbed to their highest position post-WC in the KPB rankings (losing a single place due to a dismal Cup of Harmony). Why? Because the ELFA have announced exactly the same team that played last World Cup. In light of this, the two-time winners formed a separate team, and along with the team from the fictitious realm that was recently discovered, have made sure that the ELFA have three teams to pick from during the course of qualifying. Here is what the ELFA had to say about the subject:

Leaked ELFA transcript wrote:It is in our best interests that we harness the remaining potential of the current first team while nurturing the up and coming players of the second team. The first team have indicated that there will be a significant number of retirements after this World Cup cycle, although we will not say who should they change their minds. As for the second team, it is an opportunity for them to experience the grand stage and gain that experience ahead of any possible promotions. Some of you committee members may question Vladimir O'Shea's decision to call in the aliens, but I trust his judgement that will bring some unique style to their matches, thus increasing our chances of qualification.

Now, the news that some players may be retiring suggests that the end of the era of the original Baptism of Fire 36 squad is approaching quite quickly, but we refuse to speculate on this, solely on the basis that the company is a little cash-strapped and we're facing lots of expensive allegations of phone-hacking, and we don't want libel cases on our hands as well.

Having distracted you readers long enough, it is now time to move onto more current affairs, such as the Group draw, along with predictions our rather notorious speculation team, notorious for getting them mostly wrong. The EL team were drawn into Group 14 with 10 other teams, thus making qualifying 22 matchdays long. Yet another one.

The Insight

World Cup 55 is now upon us, and the mood in the Swartaz camp is one of cautious optimism. We know that we have a great bunch of players, and our victory in the Cup of Harmony finally proved we could cut it in a major final. It was a great tournament for us, with everything coming together just at the right time in order for us to hand out some crushing defeats, and give us the confidence and belief to go on to the final and beat Novikov 2-0, not the easiest of tasks I have to tell you.

Many players in this team are heading quickly to, or are already at their peaks, ther likes of Marko Krivac, Hugo Lukas, Benidikt Klum and Vanger Handorlink in goal. I've chosen one player from every section in that list just to show that we have talented players who are on form and ready to go all the way, certainly in this qualifying stage.

The fact that we still have failed to qualify for the finals despite having participated since World Cup 46 is starting to turn into a bit of an embarrasment for players and fans alike. I firmly believe we can get there this team and be decently competitive.

Now onto our group. On paper, not the hardest of groups, Bears Armed and Khytenna providing the most obvious challenges. But along with them are Silver Beach, a team that is renowed for punching above their weight and often issuing a few giant-killings, The FSSO, a brilliant up and coming team in world football who could have a sting in their tail, especially in front of their own fans. The others look very easy in comparison, but it is all too easy to slip up in a foreign land with all the pressure on you for an easy win. However, if we stick to our basic philosophy of quick attacking play, we should hopefully cruise through the majority of matches. Bears Armed and Khytenna at home are the must win games.

This World Cup means it's time to say goodbye to a Swartaz great in midfield, Asbjörn. With over 15 years of dedicated international service, he decided enough was enough internationally, and hung up his boots. I wish him all the best for the future. However, it means 22 year old prodigy Adolph Kannesböurg has the oppourtunity to get into the roster. He's excelled at U21 level and domestically, and he's more than ready to make an inpact when needed. However the most controvestial decision made by Kenny was to bring back 34 year old striker Konstantin Brita. After a 5 year hiatus from the international game due to a loss in form, a fallout with the previous manager, and claims about his eccentric private life plastered all over the media, Kenny has brought him back after a couple of solid seasons domestically, and a good runout in a behind closed doors friendly against Kulverint. If he can find his scoring boots, one of our best ever strikers may be back for good.

Sporting Magazine Interviews Richard Valdemar

After more than two decades at the helm, Football Federation of Babbage general secretary Richard Valdemar is stepping down. Our reporter reached him immediately after the announcement.

Sporting: Thank you for talking to us.
Valdemar: You're welcome, as always.
Sporting: Where do we start? When you took the FFB job, our professionals only played domestic football. Women were almost non-existent. We had maybe 50 clubs, and several were pretty marginal.
Valdemar: It was a different time..
Sporting: It was a different time. Now, after twenty-plus years of Valdemar leadership, we have a national team ranked fifth in the world and a club in the UICA top 30. Our first World Cup Hall of Fame inductee was a woman. Seventy-two football clubs make more money and attract more fans than ever. We've hosted two World Cups and a Champions' Cup final. Two questions: How did you do it? And how do we find a replacement?
Valdemar: The first one's easy. I didn't do it. To borrow a cliche, there is no "i" in team. And we have had a brilliant team. Club leadership, FFB staff, players, fans. People pull together for love of club, country, and sport. All I did, and all my successor can do, is provide vision and use any God-given gifts of leadership to serve.
Sporting: You're a very religious man.
Valdemar: I live my faith, neither more nor less than that.
Sporting: A Church leader as well as a worldly one.
Valdemar: Maybe I'd pick a different adjective than "worldly". Secular, perhaps. But yes.
Sporting: And you and Mrs. Valdemar were just at LDS Church headquarters.
Valdemar: We were.
Sporting: Visiting, or on business?
Valdemar: Neither. We were asked to meet with some of the general authorities of the Church, and we did.
Sporting: So are you taking a Church position?
Valdemar: Before I answer, may I ask you a question?
Sporting: Sure. I guess so.
Valdemar: What faith are you?
Sporting: Lutheran, don't attend like I should.
Valdemar: So you might not be up on all the details of how we Latter-day Saints do things.
Sporting: Not really, no.
Valdemar: There are two answers to your question. The Church is a very large organisation. It needs many specialists in fields from accounting to security to building management. We hire people for jobs all the time. I have not applied for, nor been asked to consider, employment with the Church.
Sporting: Okay, that's one answer . . .
Valdemar: Our religious leadership, from the local congregation to the President of the Church, is called from worthy members in good standing. You don't apply for, vote on, or campaign to receive callings. Instead, a priesthood leader with responsibility for a particular area, after receiving guidance from his counselors and the Spirit, calls a brother or sister to serve in a specific role. When they accept, the group they will serve votes to sustain them in the calling.
Sporting: Even the Church president?
Valdemar: The Church President is the senior living apostle. But he was called as an apostle in the same fashion as I once became a bishop or my daughter Andrea became a Sunday School class president.
Sporting: So were you . . . called . . . to do something?
Valdemar: It would be a breach of etiquette at the very least to speak publicly on that before the calling authority made it public. So if I was, I cannot say yet.
Sporting: That would go for Tegan as well?
Valdemar: Husband and wife are normally interviewed together before either is called. The support of your spouse is essential for success in any calling.
Sporting: So, hypothetically, if they were interested in Tegan instead they would want to speak to both of you?
Valdemar: Hypothetically. That would be standard.
Sporting: Then we just wait for an announcement?
Valdemar: If there is an announcement to be made.
Sporting: Let's go back in time to some things you said to one of our reporters a number of years ago: "I would start by recommending a two-stage qualifying, an area stage and an interzonal stage. . . . It shortens the competition . . . the current field of 167 for an example . . . required 22 rounds of qualifying. For low-level teams, that's a long time to have no chance. Under this plan, the area stage would have had . . . [t]en rounds. Add six rounds for the interzonals and you've shaved six rounds off qualifying. . . . More important, it allows 50 teams the possibility of recognised achievement by advancing to interzonals and reduces the time slogging it out with no chance. It also creates a really intense battle in those interzonals . . . with all proven teams where one slip could be fatal.
Valdemar: It was true, too. We didn't match every element of that plan in World Cup 54, but we proved that a two-stage qualifier is not only possible but delivers the promised benefits. CASE were wonderful in helping us bring that to pass.
Sporting: Are you disappointed that this Cup reverted to a single qualifying stage?
Valdemar: FFB voted for the winning one-stage bid over the runner-up two-stage bid. There are a lot of factors that go into a sound World Cup bid. We want the Cup to be the world's premier sporting championship, and all of those factors need to be taken into account. Sure, I'd be even happier if Aguazul and Delaclava were taking an opportunity to refine a format for the future. But they bid what they can comfortably deliver, and I have the utmost confidence in their technical ability to host a Cup of the highest standard.
Sporting: If you're not working for the Church, then what do you plan to do next?
Valdemar: I've had a successful career and made good money. And my lovely wife, thanks to her success, can buy and sell me a few times over. Together we'll find ways to be of service.
Sporting: Good luck to you. Both of you.
Valdemar: Thank you.

(OOC: references from this thread are included in this role-play from the outset)

"Hey! Hey, Ben!" Yuri shouted as he ran down the street, his best friend was coming out of a fastfood outlet down the street. It was an unexpected meeting, but was one that Yuri had wanted to make. He had had a tough day at work and was on the borderline between having and not having a job as his boss got more and more annoyed at the dwindling amount of work he produced each day. He needed something to pull him back from the insanity that he had left himself in after all the work he had to do at home, he needed a break from it all.

Ben looked up, surprised - who would be calling his name out on one of the major streets in Ebor at this time? He smiled, it was his oldest friend - Ben. They had known each other since they were about two, they had been born in the same month at the same hospital. What meant even more though, was the fact they supported the same football team.

"Hey Yuri.. You just finished work?" Ben asked, turning towards his friend as he slowed down his paces.

"Yeah, yeah... Fucking shit job, that... I hate it." Yuri said.

"Shoulda' joined the army with me, shouldn't you then." Ben laughed, his mates' misfortune in finding a job always made him chuckle, it was slighty cruel - but even Yuri laughed at it.

"Hm. I've been considering it.." Yuri laughed. "Anyway, the World Cup is coming up isn't it mate, I thought we might be able to go to a few games." Yuri looked down when he said this, he was slightly sad - he didn't get to see his mate that often anymore. Whenever he did, it was football.. He almost expected this offer to get rejected - he was always stationed in Borderguard... The town which was right on the border where the major military barracks were.

"Er, maybe - I'll have to check..." Ben muttered, seeing his friends disappointment.

"Come on mate! Live a little, if you have to - take some leave - there's a friendly game... That's in the next few days, can't you go to that?" Yuri asked, a hint of anger at his friends' devotion to the job.

"Where? Who against?" Ben asked, slightly sadly.

Yuri smiled. Then laughed, then kept laughing for quite a while. Ben looked at him, with one eyebrow raised. Passers-by looked at him, then hurried on - it wouldn't do to stay out on the streets of Ebor at night. Of course, the crime-rate was high and crazy people like this were clearly involved in that - and the fact the temperature was below freezing all year around.

"Look, Yuri - I don't know what is so funny here mate.." Ben said, whilst looking around sheepishly at the people watching the two.

"Oh, I do... Haha, mate - y'know when we were in Cotdelapoms? We saw them Kagdaz and Pazhujebi players... Well.." Yuri trailed off, his friends' growing realisation making him chuckle again.

"Oh... No way, of course I'll go! I want to know if military intelligence, does know the right things.." Ben said.

"Haha, forget that.. It's Mytannion away, every Mytanar lives for them two words." Yuri replied.

"What happens if there's crowd trouble though? I can't get involved in that." Ben, as a soldier could not get involved in this - and this was usually what Mytanars did when they visited another nation. If he got involved - he would be discharged, the Mytanar army had a motto - a slightly old-fashioned one, 'The brave will be freed, the cowards are dishonourable'. He thought this applied near perfectly to the situation in Kagdazka & Pazhujebu but it also applied to this, surely hooliganism wasn't brave... Just dishonourable.

"Look, are you Mytanar, or not?" Yuri asked.

"Of course! But I can't lose my job just because I get in a stupid fight." Ben started. Anger was laced through his voice, why was his best friend accusing him of such things? He was meant to just be there for him, not call him out for not wanting a fight... But surely, this is what Mytanars did when they went abroad.

"No Ben, you don't seem to know at all... I suppose the army forces courage out of you? Yeah? Every weekend with 1896 there is a fight, I go into it every time... It's an impulse, I don't know - that isn't what this is about though.." Yuri said.

"What is it about then Yuri? You don't seem to be explaining too well. You just seem to want to get me into a fight!" Ben replied, slightly less angry than before.

The two stood there in silence. They were best friends, they had been for nearly twenty-six years. Why were they just letting this small thing pull them apart? All they wanted to do was to go to a football game, but they were arguing over whether or not they'd fight when they got there. The two kept looking at each other nervously, not knowing exactly where they stood with the other.

"Ben, will you just come to the game - I promise I won't get involved in anything, and if there is trouble - we'll head the other way. I promise. I just want to have a good time with you, my best mate.."

"Okay.. If it'll get you off my back Yuri.. I'll go." Ben smiled sheepishly, the two grinning.

The two of them walked off, they would be on the plane to Zhevassi in Pazhujebu within the next couple of nights.

Tommi's Blog
Finally online, Tommi Jakinen!

Well, you requested it enough, so it's finally here. Yes, Tommi Jakinen, head coach of the national team is online, and what a time to start. Fresh, young faces in the Kulverintian line up finally after six years, and tasked with pulling back a sport which, increasingly, is losing Kulverintian fans to Rugby Union. Boy, where to start? How about an overview of our squad, eh?

1: Junao Minniana - 21
Junao is one of the highly rated keepers of the tournament, and one who I am hoping will just keep on getting better with experience. He brilliantly saved a late Swartazian penalty last year to deny them the Union cup for the first time in 12 years, and we are hoping for more heroics from him this time, too.

2: Jaania Juliao - 24
Jaania isn't well known for being a brilliant player, but he's now on his fourth world cup with the team, and hasn't ever missed a game that he's been asked to play in. Never been substituted, he has always been a stronghold of the defence.
3: Vinnia Surtiania - 27
Vinnia's back after two world cups out, and he's not the fit, young, athletic man we all remember. But he's also not the clumsy, silly, arrogant man we remember either. He is a crucial player at central defence, and we'll be needing him to be at peak performance.
4: Farné Dré@na - 25
Farné, once the new man in the team, has become one of the more memorable players of the team. Perhaps it's because he's the only player to use the distinctive Kulverintian "@" symbol in his name, but whatever, he is always on it and ready when you need him.
5: Zindrana Milliana - 30
It was a sinking feeling that I felt when I picked up the phone at the end of last year. Zindrana will be competing in his last world cup, as recent events have left him disillusioned with the game that is football. Having seen him watching KNVB last month, it seems even the national football team is not above Rugby fever.

6: Markus Winschöten - 17
One of the best young players I have seen since Janni burst onto the scene 16 years ago. Markus is of dutch stock, and in Kulverint that usually means Rugby stock, but he, in his own words, disgusted his entire family when, aged 7, he asked to be given a football for christmas. A great person to be around, and always laughing, we'll see how he can cope with the pressures of international play.
7: Friansza Vidarnia - 23
Vidarnia, son of my good friend Hans, originally from Göteborg, Swartaz, is Kulverintian all the way. I was thrilled when he, at 19 years old, asked to join the national team in person, rather than wait. He knew he was ready, and he was right. Rumours that he was offered a career by Swartaz are unlikely, but if true, would accurately represent the patriotism this man feels to his birthplace.
8: Cinniao Hyianiya - 33
I was, again, saddened to hear, when playing golf with him, that Cinniao was considering retirement. This is not to say it surprised me, as Cinniao has begun to get very injury prone, and is worried about what big one would do to his wife, Sära. He will be missed.
9: Bliuvliana Hillunia - 26
Bliuvliana, I must say, has not impressed me. His conduct in the Derastüun - Transversa game was disgusting, and if he plays like that here, he will not be playing here again. He must perform well to survive into world cup 56.

10: Xiniana "Xixi" Milverki - 29
Xixi brilliantly returned from a horrible ankle injury to severely assist Kulverint's final push towards qualification in World Cup 53, and in 54, when we comfortably qualified, he showed his worth. In later years it seems that the performance gap that has always existed between him and his brother Janni is closing fast. He will be a force to be reckoned with.
11: Janni Milverki - 31
What can I say about Janni Milverki? Once quoted as "The best player in the world stuck in a dead end national side," Janni should now have the team to prove it. Back then, Kulverint was 131st in the World Rankings, now we are 25th, ahead of football loving neighbours Swartaz, (Which delights our president to no end!) and, more importantly, consistently qualifying for the Finals. Janni must be on top form if Kulverint is to achieve it's no.1 goal - to get to the second round for the first time. I have faith in him, the whole country has faith in him, but can he deliver?

Oh, and one more thing, the starting roster for the game against Iglesian Archipelago, at the Stadia de la Kulverint, of course.

First Team:
1: Junao Minniana - 21
2: Jaania Juliao - 24
3: Vinnia Surtiania - 27
4: Farné Dré@na - 25
5: Yuntia Ardana - 22

6: Markus Winschöten - 17
7: Friansza Vidarnia - 23
8: Cinniao Hyianiya - 33
9: Sven Johannson - 25

10: Xiniana "Xixi" Milverki - 29
11: Janni Milverki - 31

Subs:
12: Jos Ferana - 26
13: Stianni Verstappen - 23
14: Zindrana Milliana - 30

15: Bliuvliana Hillunia - 26
16: Jean Le Milliana - 23

17: Pyotr Xinkra - 18
18: Janna Houkatli - 19

WORLD CUP 55 QUALIFYING ROUND - Valladares drawn in a tough Group 11 for qualifying stage

NEW FACES, SAME EXPECTATIONS

By: Alan Rosero,
Blogger from "The National Kickoff"

AGUAZUL (VP) - The draw for the World Cup qualifying stage was held yesterday in Aguazul. And the outcome for us couldn't be worse: Group 11, with a former world champion, a team often present in the final stages and some more who will look not to be pushovers. As said by Marcus Trent, the VFA chairman: "this draw was a disaster for us. Obviously we would be drawn against a tough team, but this wasn't the draw we expected." So, it's the time to know our rivals in this qualifying stage:

Espiañola (278th): Espiañola may have shown signs of potential during the last Baptism of Fire, however, Valladares shouldn't have a lot of problems to edge past them.

Dorian and Sonya (9th): So we have the Sylvanaes again. Our first and last meeting ended with a painful trouncing during the Newmanistan Interzonal the last World Cup, so maybe it's time for Les Gones to have their victory. Although defeating the first seed of the group will always be a difficult goal to achieve...

Taeshan (201st): Taeshan used to be always present at the World Cup finals, but their good times seemed to have faded away in just two WC cycles. Now the Taeshanis are back and will surely represent a threat for Les Gones, so we must be careful with this team. Our two matches against them will be two must-win matches.

Errinundera (UNR): Another historical team that has returned for redemption. They, along with Landau Institute, Taeshan, Virabia and Churchma, will be a direct rival for Valladares in this campaign. Les Gones must get two wins against this direct rival, although four points would be excellent.

The Kiaser Colonies (363rd): Another new nation to the international stage, although they shouldn't be a demanding challenge for us.

Seleucius (314th): Same as above. However, Seleucius may be ready to spoil the party for anyone of the favorites for the two WC spots, so we must be careful.

Sarzoclava (278th): Another promising team that comes from the last Baptism of Fire. Sarzoclava are one of those teams ready to give shocks and surprise blows to the favorites, so Les Gones will have to make sure that doesn't happen to us, getting two wins or a win and a draw at the least.

Virabia (101st): It'll be a clash of two VFAs: The Virabi FA and the Valladar FA. The Virabis will be ready to fight against Churchma, Landau Institute, Taeshan and us for one of the two World Cup berths, so we have to get two wins against them.

Landau Institute (39th): We've already faced them before and we beat them. But this will be a different history and both teams are in contention for two World Cup spots. But we already know who we want to win...

Churchma (51st): Last but not least, we have Churchma. They have a promising squad, and they've done decent WC qualifying campaigns before. However, for the sake of history and for our own chances, Les Gones have to defeat them in order to clear the path for qualification.

Well my friends, that was the review of our qualifying group, which has been already dubbed as the "Group of Death" by some Valladar journalists. Also, it will be the first WC campaign without Paulo Oliveira, as he retired after winning the Coupe Pomme d'Or in Cotdelapoms, so that means new faces are given the chance to make their début in the National team. With those new faces and the expectations we have, I only expect another trip to the finals, this time in Aguazul and Delaclava.

Brrrrr...the fixture is freezing now...

Ok, so we're back to the one-stage qualifying phase. That means we're having the large qualifying groups once again. And that means more people will be given the chance to watch their National Team live. And it seems the VFA understands it, because two of the ten qualifying matches Valladares will play at home (vs. Virabia and vs. Sarzoclava) will be played at the Westlands, the new region conquered during the Fourth Valladar Expansion. The Westlands are located west of Valladares (duh!) and are known because of their cold climate and freezing temperatures, so teams travelling to there will have to deal with ice, snow and subzero temperatures. Metropolis, Carloburgo, Eterna City, Campo Grande, Bezieres, Slateport, Canalave and Pradera will host the other eight home matches for Valladares during this qualifying stage. So, without further ado, we'll give you the full schedule for Valladares matches in this WC Qualifiers:

World Cup Conference

Postby The Kiaser Colonies » Tue Apr 19, 2011 2:39 pm

Tom Parks, Minister for Tourism and Sport, steps up to the podium in the executive room of the National Convention Center to a large round of applause.

Minister Parks: ''Thank you all for coming here today. It's wonderful to be here to host this conference, which could be my last public appearence as the official minister for sport due to the election. But that's not what im here to talk about. I'm here to tell you all about the biggest thing to happen to sport in our country ever. I am of course talking about our national football team playing in the NS World Cup 55, which is their first ever world cup. It give's me great pride in knowing that I was the minister in power when they went to the world cup, that I had their stadium built and that you can all be proud that you contributed. No matter how you did, if you bought a jersey, went to a match or donated to help your local club you helped this team more than you can imagine. So people please give a warm welcome to the Kiaser Colonies national football team.''

The team enters the room to the sound of whistling, cheering and huge applause. They wave to the crowd and take their seats behind the podium.

Minister Parks: ''I now invite manager Mark Cahill to speak.''

Mark Cahill steps up to the podium with more applause

Manager Cahill: ''Thank you Minister and thank you all for coming. I may have only been in charge of the team for 7 months but I must say that out of all the teams I have ever managed this is the one I will miss the most when I retire. Anyway, we have been training extra hard for the last month, 7 days a week for 3 hours a day. Most of the squad have done some private fitness training like climbing mountains or going to the gym. We are really going to need it apparently because we are the lowest ranked team in our group which consists of 9th ranked Dorian and Sonya. But that won't stop us from winning each and every game in the group.'' Cheering '' Rankings are nothing to us because we have never been in the competition before so we don't know what these team's are like and they don't know what we're like. All I know is that we will qualify for the next round because THIS IS THE MODERN WAY!

Room explodes with cheering and applause. Team captain Greg Jackson take's his place at the podium

Captain Jackson: ''Mark Cahill is right. We are the lowest ranked team in the group but that won't stop us. We have trained so hard in the last month and we'll step it up now to really push the other teams to their limits. We don't need to think about last game scraped qualification or being knocked out because we will qualify comfertably. We will give every game our all even if we go behind. Forget 101%, forget 110%, people who only give it 110% don't try hard enough. We are the Kiaser Colonies and we give everything infinite effort. No exeptions ever.''

Cheering and applause again fill the room. The team leave to catch their flight to Agauzul and Delaclava.

Beningrad Morning Star

Unknown appointed as Sorthern football manager

Expectations of Sorthern football fans this morning took a nosedive following the appointment of a virtual unknown to the role of manager of the nation's football team. Mass scepticism has greeted the appointment of thirty-four year old Iarlaith Mag Aonghusa, not least due to Mag Aonghusa biggest managerial achievement thus far has been to lead Willowlake Colts under-nines to victory in the East Beningrad Juniors Sunday League Cup.

SNFA chairman Fionntan Ó hEadroman, a cousin by marriage to Mag Aonghusa however downplayed the lack of experience of his new appointment whilst admitting that time would be needed for Mag Aonghusa to convince the public of his ability.

Being questioned in the hours after the announcement Ó hEadroman conceded “Few would have had Iarlaith down as an automatic choice for the job, but he's done plenty of coaching courses and it's always been thought that he has huge potential. We believe with the right staff to support him he is ready for this role and we fully believe he is capable of guiding the team successfully through the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.”

Mag Aonghusa's involvement in football in far from new however and it has been noted that he had previously been a supremely talented footballer on the books of Beningrad and one who had represented Sorthern national teams at all age levels up to under-nineteens. An injury suffered in a gangland shooting however forced him to retire from football at the age of just eighteen, since which he has dedicated himself to gaining coaching qualifications and coaching in youth football.

He has now however elected to move into senior football and claims that despite his lack of experience he is more than ready to step straight into the biggest football job in the country. Speaking to journalists he said at his unveiling, “Of course it's a big step up, but I'm confident I can handle it. I might not have worked full time in senior football before, but I've spent a lot of time shadowing the managers and coaches at some of the bigger clubs in the country and I have belief that the methods I'm looking to implement will work. I've also got some of the best an most experienced coaches in the country working with me, the quality of the coaching team is above anything we've ever had before.”

Following a series of failures in the World Cup under the experienced and big name Caio Meback some have alleged that the appointment of Mag Aonghusa is an attempt to lower the expectations and pressures put upon the Sorthern football team. Asked if he felt this was the case Mag Aonghusa answered “Not for me. The SNFA have goals to reach the World Cup and then make it to the knock-outs, if I fail to meet those and the knives will be out and I suspect my career will be over. It's a big job and there will always be pressure in such jobs.”

“I do think that as a country our expectations do need to be reined in a little though. We have to recognise this is the start of a rebuilding progress and it will take some time to get back to the level we were before. The last World Cup wasn't merely a blip, it was part of a downward trajectory and it's my job to arrest that slide and begin to take this country back where it should be. It's a big job, and it's a difficult job and one that some people might not want, but I do. I'm looking forward to the challenge ahead and confident that I'll succeed in it, and that our country will succeed in it.”

"Let's go over it, shall we?"

Bularte leaned back in his chair, across Treko's mahogany desk. He nodded. "Let's."

"Alright. Friendly at Erathore. We've played them before, remember?"

Bularte narrowed his eyes. "In Chunnan, yeah. We have to watch out for Del Nieran, any plans yet?"

"I'm betting on Urrustoy marking him, like he did with Seleucius' Estévez. He's good at taking out playmakers if he drops back a bit."

"He is. Could avoid all those bookings, though."

"Rough play's needed sometimes," Treko lifted his finger to keep Bularte from speaking out, "Although I know you disagree with that. Now, let's move on. Next we'll play Civil Citizenry at Grand Duke's."

"Anything we should know in advance?"

"We'll focus on their strikers, Eksyama and Acca. Urgutz and Soter went on the Young Guns tour with the latter, they might know something."

Bularte snorted and shook his head. "Maybe Urgutz, but Soter'll just sneer and mutter something before walking away."

Treko took off his glasses and began cleaning them. "He does has a bit of an attitude problem."

"A bit?"

"A lot, alright. But he's the top scorer and only twenty-two, don't you forget." said Treko as he jabbed at Bularte with his glasses.

"Then there's the Mike Sarzo Trophy?"

"Memorial Trophy, yes. Opponents and all that to be determined, apparently."

Bularte grunted an acknowledgement. He looked away briefly. "Then...the debut?"

"The debut. You know against who."

The Iturributan smiled grimly. "Playing away to the Holy Empire isn't my idea of a morale boost."

Treko grinned. "It's incredible, though, isn't it? From the mythical Dreamed Realm, the only current national team to have participated in the first World Cup."

"And we'll be playing them, yeah. Wonderful." said Bularte with sarcasm.

"Oh, you're so sour. When you get to my age you'll learn to appreciate this type of things. Something to tell the grandkids."

"I'd rather tell them how I won the Royal Cup twice. Or how I'm, you know, only the second-ever captain of Astograth."

Treko shook his hand, smiling. "As you wish, Estebe. But you'll see, in time, that you're not as wise as you think you are."

"Perhaps." he muttered. "Let's keep moving now."

"Yes. Well, on matchday two we'll have one of the two byes on which a match with Delaclava is to be scheduled."

"And then Eastfield Lodge."

"Away to them, yes. I sense you're eager to play them?"

"Everyone is, to be honest. They were our first ever opponents, and all the boys want is to avenge the loss."

Treko nodded. "It was a cruel, having them come back. We were doing so well after Ormache scored..."

"We'll give it our all, boss. Treat it like a final."

"Like a final, yes. Anyway, on matchday four we visit Rejistania."

"4-time World Cup winners."

"Indeed. It might've been a long time ago, but they're still ranked 28th."

Bularte chucked. "Three hundred places above us, then. I reckon we can put up a fight."

Treko's hearty laughter filled the large, dreary office. "Yes, I bet we will. A real run for their money."

"Right. Seriously now, who's next?"

"Next we play our first home match, against Unibot."

"Where exactly?"

"To be determined. Probably Grand Duke's."

"And after Unibot?"

"Away to Invisible Wabbits, home to Emagna, away to Loonaterian and Blasphematic Fools, home to Hemas and away to Leyte Islands. Don't know much about the rest, but you remember Loonaterian?"

"Of course. If we beat them at Burchadinger, we can do it again."

The manager patted Bularte on the back. "That's the spirit, man! Now get back on the training ground and make it count!"

The playmaker stood up and left, with Morriyas' loud cursing coming in through the window. This reminded Treko of something.

"Oh, Estebe! Don't forget - everybody in the video room at 6 - wait, no - 5 AM tomorrow!"

Bularte would later claim he heard nothing.

Mangolana Gazzette
Mangolana prepares for World Cup Qualifing

After the completion of the group draw yesterday, Mangolana found out who they would have to defeat, if they wished to participate in the 55th edition of the World Cup. Mangolana was drawn in to group one with 10 other nations who also have dreams of making the World Cup. There are many nations that Mangolana has never played before such as Qlumez, Valanora, Cosumar, and Carasatoga. almost all of these teams can qualify for the World Cup, but because there are only two spots avalible, out of a group of 11, odds makers don't give Mangolana a fighting chance in this, But former captain and current manager, Robert Jimenez says his team will suprise many people in this very strong group. "We have lots of talent on this team, the question is, can we harness that talent and use it against are opponents, and I say yes we can. It will be all about what are players will do to achieve it, If their willing to go the distance, then i believe we can qualify for the World Cup. We played really well last year against much tougher teams, and this year, once again I think were poised to upset many nations, and I ask that all people from Mangolana get behind us and try to push thru this time."

As we procede, we will also take a look and teams in our group and give previews and predictions.

Qlumez (83)- Team that is close to Mangolana in the standings, and a vetren team to playing in World Cup qualifing. They are poised to bust thru one year, but we just don't think that it will be this year.

Starorentia (244)- A new team, that has promising talent and skill, but there is no chance according to our analsts that they will make it past the qualifing rounds, just no chance.

Valanora (2)- Former number 1 in the world, now number 2, there is no chance that they will not qualify, in fact it's a longshot that they will finish lower than first in this group.

Pasarga- the second highest ranked team in the group, but hopefully we can defeat them, with luck of course

Altimarus (363)- Another team in the group that should cause no problem for Mangolana or anybody else for that matter, wil be competing to be not last we think.

Ko-Oren (278)- A team Mangolana has beaten many times before in smaller tournaments, will be looking to be about mid pack though, could cause a stir late by beating top teams.

Italiaum (397)- Bottom of the barrel, literally, tied for last place in current KPB standings, most likely a last place finish, lucky to win a game.

Cosumar (35)- Supposed to be the third best team in this group, but hopefully Mangolana can out duel them to that second spot in the group.

Justownia- Another who spot I couldnt find, but they could cause an upset and finish about middle of the pack in the Group.

Carasatoga (190)- A team who will finish sixth in the group, there too good to loose to lower teams, but not good enough to beat the better teams.

2. Mangolana
3. Pasarga
4. Cosumar
5. Qlumez
6. Carasatoga

Justownia To Make World Cup Debut

Soccer fans from Justownia have been anticipating this moment for many years. For a long time, fans have been watching many games at the international level and have been waiting for Justownia to get their shot at playing with the big boys.

Well, they don't have to wait any longer.

After a performance at the Baptism of Fire that showed promise, Justownia is finally ready to make their World Cup debut. During the Baptism of Fire, Justownia managed a solid 2-2-2 record, good enough for 38th at the Baptism of Fire and is currently ranked 314th. During the Baptism of Fire, Justownia showcased a solid offense and great defensive play. However, their inconsistancy at goalie cost them a few games. (As shown by their 14 goals allowed, the second most at the Baptism of Fire. With improvement at goalie, many experts believe that Justownia can compete with some of the better teams in the bracket.

This may be why the manger of Justownia, Dyk Faewer, has decided to have an open competition at goalkeeper. "We need all the help we can get at goalkeeper," said Faewer at a press conference on Monday, "so we've decided to make our choice at goalkeeper as a game time decision. We need to put a lot of thought into this and decide which goalkeeper will be the most beneficial to our team."

Justownia was put in Group 1, which has many tough teams in it, including former #1 and current #2 Valanora. Group one also features Mangolana, Qlumes, Starorentia, Pasarga, Altimarus, Ko-Oren, Italiaum, Cosumar, and Carasatoga.

Justownia will play its first match tomorrow vs. Starorentia. Starorentia, led by 17 year old star forward Francesc Fabregassi, is also a newcomer on the international scene and is currently ranked 244th in the world. Starorentia, like Justownia, also played in the Baptism of Fire, making the playoffs as the #8 seed with a 3-0-3 record before losing in the opening round before losing at heartbreaker to #1 ranked Kernansquilliac on penalty kicks.

Predictions (OOC: These predictions are biased.):
vs. Starorentia (244) - W

vs. Qlumez (83) - L
vs. Italium (397) - W
@ Altimarus (363) -W
vs. Valanora (2) - L
@ Mangolana (76) - L
vs. Carasatoga (190) - W
vs. Consumar (35) - L
@ Ko-Oren (278) - W
vs. Pasarga (33) - L
@ Starorentia (244) - W

@ Qlumez (83) - L
@ Italium (397) - W
vs. Altimarus (363) -W

vs. Mangolana (76) - L
@ Carasatoga (190) - W
@ Consumar (35) - L
vs Ko-Oren (278) - W
@ Pasarga (33) - L

Summary: Justownia looks like a solid contender in this group and is in about the middle of the pack. They'll easily beat the lower ranked teams, but may struggle against some of the better teams. With a few upsets, Justownia could move on.
