THE LANDAU INSTITUTE SQUAD FOR WC54

After the immense failure that were the Creations, there was a huge pressure from the football fans of the Institute towards having a normal team of doctors back in the World Cup. But the scientists, very influential in the association, were able to stop the return to that previous squad, and instead worked on a compromise between footballing performance and scientific study. Instead of developing new players that would serve for them to work on some theories, they decided that all members of the squad should be the ones responsible for leading the studies and making progress on all the theories. So, while the Creations were just intermediaries, the new players of the Landau Institute squad would be in direct contact with the studies, performing them themselves. And, in order to manage this, the Institute formed a group of thirty psychologists and psychiatrists and put them under intensive training. With this, they would play football well enough to not harm the team's qualification changes in name of knowledge. After leaving the training site, they received their shirts and two missions: two play the best football they could, and to focus on the studies' objectives.

Each player received a codename, which strictly represents the person whose ideas they follow. The truth is that some didn't really follow the ideas of the owner of their codenames, but during the training period were asked to deeply study them and to make their conclusions based only on the works of these people. Therefore, they'll say what the codename owner would say in each situation, following the theories developed by them. But, in the end, they are just common psychologists and psychiatrists of the Landau Institute, and have no close relationship with the famous people they represent. Their advantage is that they have received a serious football training, and can do a fine job during the qualifiers. But as pointed out, they have more to do than just play football, and below is a list of their possible actions during a match:

- during the entire match, the defenders of the Institute squad will be making questions to the players they're marking, and the same applies to the attackers of the Institute team, who will be questioning their markers. One time or another, they may make comments about how the conversation is going.

- the midfielders of the Institute team will try to hold the ball whenever possible, in order to give more time for the questioning. When the ball is out of play, the midfielders will be constantly making notes of physical reactions of the opponent players, and record what they say. They may even ask them to repeat something if they miss it.

- after the match, the Institute players will try to convince the highest number of opponent players to participate in their studies, as subjects.

- opponent players may, during the match, receive advices from the Institute players, who can even prescribe them some medicines in more serious cases.

- when a player from the Institute squad scores a goal, he commemorates on his own way while all the other members of the squad don't move, they only applaud their team mate. When an opponent scores, all the players of the Institute team will attempt to shake hands with him/her to show sportsmanship.

- before every match, the captain of the Institute squad will try to speak with the referee for as much as fifteen minutes, to have his impressions about the attitudes and personality of the official.

- everytime an Institute player is interviewed, he/she will do his/her best to give as much information as possible, making the interviews extremely long, full of technical terms and a true lesson to the reporters. It is highly advisable for foreign media sources to bring specialists with them and even engage in discussions.

- during the match, the Institute players may try to create scenarios to provoke different reactions from the opponents, so these reactions can be studied. They will never do something crazy enough to harm their chances of winning the game, but they can increase/decrease the violence/pace/offensiveness/passing length/diving of the match.

- they will attempt to help any player who falls on the ground due to injury, even if it doesn't seem to be serious. Many of them are good drivers, and will offer themselves to drive the injured player outside the pitch or even to a hospital.

- when the ball is out of play and it'll stay this way for some time, all members of the Institute squad reunite at the center of the pitch to share their discoveries and plan the next steps.

And now, the list of players (starters in bold) - the team doesn't have a coach, they collectively plan the substitutions and strategy changes:

12- Aaron Beck
22- James Cattell

THE VAST REALM OF COSUMAR NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM
WORLD CUP 54

It is that time of year again, time for another World Cup. This will be the Cosuamr Dragons' fourth World Cup and the Dragons are growing in experience and talent. After a rough debut in World Cup 51 Cosumar returned for World Cup 52 ranked 118 and had a fairly successful Cup, finishing 6th in the group. For World Cup 53, Cosumar advanced into the top 90 teams and finished in the top half of the group, but failed to qualify once again. World Cup 54 might just be the year the Dragons qualify and emerge into the realm of international football prominence.

Basic Team Information
Nation: The Vast Realm of Cosumar
Team Nickname: Dragons
Colors: Dark blue and silver

Stadium: Leviathan Arena
Capacity: 99,114
Location: Kaldukosic, Cosumar

Experience: World Cup 51 was our debut
Team: 18 players, 16 of which are human. The other 2 are Vloo (native Cosumaran sentient species).
Formation: 4-2-4

The Roster
(position, name, age, description)

GK Jude Adjei-Kontoh (27)
Adjei-Kontoh is a very solid goalie that rarely makes mistakes. He is very passionate about football
GK Mike Dupree (36)
Dupree is a respected veteran in Cosumar and is a reliable backup for Adjei-Kontoh
DF William Riley (20)
Riley is a young soccer phenomenon from Cirdaw. He came straight out of high school to professional football. Small but fast.
DF Kennedy Kopenhaver (27)
Kennedy is infamous for being very emotional and gets more penalties than anyone else on the roster. But he is very quick and skilled
DF Thomas Hair (26)
Thomas is quiet off the field, but when he plays soccer he becomes a different person. Not as fast but great awareness and control
DF Joel Novamo (27)
Novamo has potential but it always seems like he lacks passion or drive. He is tall and intimidating
DF Lawrence Copper (32)
Lawrence Copper is the jokester of the team, always making sure everyone has fun. He hustles and tries hard but isn't as skilled
DF Jarsh Na'Rield (35)
Na'Rield is one of 2 non-humans on the team and prefers to keep to himself. He is an all around average football player.
MF Keenen Juengerman (29)
Juengerman is a foreign football player who emigrated to Cosumar. He is very talented but has trouble communicating
MF Teemu Koponen (26)
Koponen is a proud man of Sandanavian descent. He has the strongest leg on the team. He once kicked the ball so hard it popped
MF Irvinn Rincon (30)
Rincon is known as the team leader or captain. He rallies the team and leads by example. He is one of Cosumar's best football players
MF Brian Emerson (24)
Emerson is the smallest player on the team. He makes up for it for being deceptively quick. He is very intelligent and level headed
ST Kalvin Feldman (21)
Feldman is an extremely talented young player. However, he is undeveloped and raw. This will be a learning experience for him.
ST Luke Crisalus (21)
Luke Crisalus is Cosumaran royalty, little brother of the Duchess. He is much like Feldman but he is more developed
ST Jakk Klyde (23)
Klyde is the most famed sports figure in Cosumar. He is on Cosumar's national team in nearly every sport. He is very diverse and athletic
ST Rikki Varshney (24)
Varshney led the team in goals in WC 51, WC 52, and WC 53. He is the best on the team at getting the ball into the goal
ST Frederick Finnigan (36)
Finnigan is an experienced veteran who has played professionaly for 16 years. He has not lost a step over the years
ST Northbert Na'Shon (28)
Na'Shon is the second of two non-humans on the team. He is strong and athletic, amazing leg. However, injury prone and inconsistant

For WC 54 the Dragons are returning all of their starters from their successful WC 53 campaign. However, some positional changes are being made and a few more players have been added.

Coaching Staff and Team Captains

Manager: Farris Crowley

This is Crowley's first time as Cosumar's Manager. Crowley was a somewhat successful player in Cosumar's domestic league many years ago and has since taken to coaching. He is currently 41 years of age and has a very stoic personality most of the time.

Assistant Manager: Randy Lewis

Randy Lewis has been an iconic figure in Cosumaran football for decades. Many years ago he was a famed striker for the Coroford Sharks. He retired and became a head coach at age 40. he held that job for 22 years until he was 62. He then retired and has disappeared from the public eye. Many thought he was dead. Now he is 74 and is returning to assist Feldman with World Cup 54.

Team Captain: Irvinn Rincon
Defense Positional Captain: Thomas Hair
Midfield Positional Captain: Irvinn Rincon
Striker Positional Captain: Rikki Varshney

Another world cup kicks off for Kazzoria, and once again we look set to be flattened. It isn't that we haven't been doing well, because we have, the team is starting to get older and many of our great players are on the bench now. Hopefully we can do a repeat of the last time and cause a bit of a shock, maybe this year we will finally qualify. Last time we came close, but after the first half of games we seemed to run out of momentum. Maybe the manager feels that this time we might need a bigger squad so has tried to expand the squad.

Randall has been FSSO or ‘Fuzz’ (FSSO is short for my nations full name) national manager for three years. He has a good reputation having developed the national youth system and bringing better results in general, although he has received criticism for indecision at times.

Assistant Manager: Dimitri Campbell
Assistant manager for one year, following in the footsteps of his father Brian Campbell. Similar but less attacking style to Randall.

The Squad

Player guide – Shirt number. Name – Position – Age – Club – Caps - Goals

Goalkeepers

1. Daniel Belgrave – GK – 23 – Directus – 34 – 0

This young player came up through the Directus FC youth system and has been their first choice goalkeeper for two years now. He has been first choice for the national team for a similar amount of time, and his height and bravery have made him an effective goalkeeper. Strong at defending set pieces and corners and good at saving penalties, but is not as good at dealing with shots from a tight angle.

27. Jerry Watchman – GK – 31 – Bastion – 108 – 1

Before the arrival of Belgrave on the scene, Watchman was first choice. He famously headed in a goal in stoppage time to give the FSSO a 1-0 win in a tournament of local national teams. He ran up for a corner as the clock ran down and threw himself into a diving header, turning him into a national hero overnight. Belgrave’s natural mentor.

41. Craig Castleton – GK – 28 – Pashter United – 18 – 0

Third choice goalkeeper who recently returned from a lengthy injury. Good at dealing with close range efforts due to good reactions, but weak at set pieces.

Defenders

2. Dennis Arnold – RB/RWB – 23 – Directus – 47 – 1

This promising attacking right back was discovered by manager Ben Randall when he was managing powerhouse club Directus, and he called the lad up as soon as he became manager of the national team. Arnold has had a good start to his international career, despite initially being a flop. Lacks in strength, but fast and good at dribbling.

4. Grant Davis – CB – 30 – Ulsa – 102 – 7

6 ft 3 Grant Davis has long been a staple of the FSSO back line, providing stability and control in defence. He has a great record with his head, scoring 6 for his country with the cranium from set plays and such. His seventh goal came from a wonderful volley in a friendly last year. Strong and generally a great player.

5. Mike Humphrey – RCB – 26 – Bastion – 63 – 0

Less physically imposing than Davis, but much more skilled on the ball and slightly fitter. However his goal scoring ability is pathetic, even for a defender.

3. Joe Arnie Pizza – LB/LM – 24 – Bastion – 56 – 3
Vice captain

(If anyone gets the reference to a real life player in the name, they get a cookie.) An intense attacking left back who can also play a left midfield role, Pizza is not as consistent or good at tackling as the above three defenders but he is much better at short and long balls and has a deadly left foot which regularly thumps in screaming shots for his club.

Other defenders:

22. Ben Kean – LCB – 28 – Farrelton Athletic – 45 – 0
13. Julesk Paranaya – CB/CDM – 25 – Asmer – 29 – 1
17. Matt Boyce – RCB/RB – 32 – Internazcionale (Erathore) – 16 – 0

Midfielders

6. Steven Thompson – CDM – 30 – Ulsa – 102 – 7
Captain

Thompson has been playing for his country since he was 17 and never looked back. One of FSSO footballs most successful players, his holding play in midfield is useful in defence and build up play.

8. Carlos Aduna – CAM – 26 – Bastion – 86 – 13
Direct free kick taker – Driven

Like Pizza, Aduna is renowned for his power shots – except Aduna uses his right foot. A powerful presence in midfield that plays good through balls and is excellent at shooting from range, although his ability to head the ball is not great. He is the playmaker.

7. James McRoft – RAM/RW – 22 – Directus - 41 – 9
Direct free kick taker – Curled
Right corner taker

A young winger, McRoft is fast, a brilliant dribbler and superb finisher. His defensive capabilities when going back are questionable but when he dribbles past two players and curls the ball into the top corner from 25 yards, the manager doesn’t complain. Certainly a wonder kid, and currently the joint most valuable player in the FSSO at a price tag of £32 million quaglifumps. The other player is star striker Lee Sharp.

11. Josh Stevenson – LDM/LM – 18 – Farrelton Athletic – 15 – 1
Left corner taker

Josh Stevenson is a very promising young player who plays a more defensive game than his right wing counterpart, but is equally skilled on the ball and also provides brilliant corners and crosses, like McRoft. However, he has only made six international appearances prior to now so his inexperience could hinder him on and off the field.

Other Midfielders

12. Persa Ryans – CM – 26 – Bastion – 46 – 3
15. John Pallister – CM/RM – 30 - Sparta FC – 45 - 0
18. Carl Coffa – CB/CDM – 28 – Horncorn – 40 – 0
24. Dennis Truch – LM – 23 – Revolutionaries – 12 – 0

Forwards

9. Sam Needle – ST – 21 – Bastion – 31 – 16
Penalty taker

Since he started playing internationals Sam Needle has shown himself to be a prolific scorer and great finisher. Although his ability to play the ball to others is his weakness, he can produce brilliant finishes especially from short range, and he is quite fast.

10. Lee Sharp – RS – 25 – Directus – 60 – 34
Star player

Sharp is short and not particularly strong, and rarely scores headers – but he is a lethal from all ranges, fast, determined and offers brilliant passing skills and through balls. His speciality is edge of the box finishes, from which he scores a lot of his goals for club and country.

14. Scott Daley – CF – 27 – Farrelton Athletic – 74 – 20

Daley is no longer the forward of choice for his country but he still poses a threat, although as a centre forward he plays more of a supporting role than the leading pair, who are referred to as “Sharp Needles.” However he is very capable with his head, being 6ft 2, and possesses a quite accurate left foot.

Other strikers

16. Graham Hill – RS – 36 - Horncorn – 132 – 49
20. Ben Quinn – LS – 23 – Ulsa – 16 – 1

Preferred team sheet (Players not included will act as reserves)

Squad to be filled in when I'm not feeling so ill, however should the cup start before I am feeling better what you need to bear in mind is that they are all vampires and therefore the matches will need to be played at night.

Coach- Alan Malloy- age 51- the grandson of former legendary Tynelian keeper Vladimar “the Wall” Malloy., Coach Malloy was one of the key movers in the restoration of the Tynelian Scoccer Federation as one of the leaders in the New Othydoxic Christian Church of Reborn Othydoxy once that group came into power. Devoted to the game and his religion, Alan takes a page out of his grandfather’s book claiming that a stout defense to deny the other team the blessings of the Lord of Scores is just as important as seeing a multitude of those blessings bestowed upon his faithful. Or as he put it “I’d rather see us win 1-0 than lose 6-5.” Despite taking a lot of heat in some quarters for his plan of attack in the Cup of Harmony the team actually made it to the finals before losing in extra time after winning a pair of shootout thrillers to reach that stage. He has promised to open things up a bit more this time through.

Assistant coach- Laurie Masterson- age 44. Great Granddaugther of Tynelian WC soccer legend- appearing as a player in 7 of them and 4 time WC Coach Jay Masterson and grandson of former WC member Jay Masterson Jr. Laurie is supposed to have the best tactical mind of any coach Tynelia has had since Adam Billington. Masterson was expected to take over the coaching duties this cup but after the team’s successful Cup of Harmony run, Coach Malloy was brought back for one more cup. Rumor has it however that nothing less that making it to the cup proper will save Malloy’s job this time.

Style -2, formation 4-3-3
Richardson---Daniels---- Watson
Canyon--- Logan--- Davis
Grant---- Johnson---- Allistair----- Credle
Grey

G- Harold Grey (age 31, starter)- Grey has returned for his third Cup effort having started most of the games for Tynelia. A strong Cup of Harmony run has some mentioning his name now as one of the top keepers to appear in this year’s WC qualifiers. Whether he can handle the expectations that come with that remain to be seen but the team is confident he’ll be just fine.

G- Mera Trytan- (age 22 reserve) With the retirement of Conroy Harris after the Cup of harmony, last WC ‘s tagalong Trytan now finds herself the sole backup for Grey. After a couple of strong seasons in league play the coaching staff feels confident enough in her to give her the backup spot all to herself this time.

D- Melodie Grant (age 28- starter) Melodie is an established veteran and the leader of the defensive unit for Tynelia which has gotten better each cup. Her average height has been a problem during corner kicks and such but in the open there are none in Tynelia who can match her leading the league in steals for two of the last three seasons in league play.

D- Morgan Johnson- (age 32, starter) Morgan has continued his solid play from last Cup and was in fact one of the standouts during the Cup of Harmony run. Some had claimed politics was behind his initial successes as Morgan is the son of the New Othydoxic Christian Church of Reborn Othydoxy High Priest Jacob Johnson. However he has silenced those voices by simply being a great player on the pitch.

D- Justin Credle (age 30- starter) a solid workmanlike player, one of the better ballhandlers on the team. Soft spoken and seemingly camera shy he does his talking on the pitch and had a good showing in the WC last time though he did have some spotty play during the Cup of Harmony run. Some wondered if this might cost him his starting spot but he remains in the lineup for now.

D- Marcus Allistair (age 25- starter) the tallest player on the team despite his youth this 6’9” giant towers over the rest of his teammates. Despite some attempts to move him to a striker’s spot to take advantage of his height, Allistair seems most comfortable on defense and is a nightmare for corner kickers everywhere who have to try and get it over this giant.

D- David Lee (age 24- reserve) a newcomer to the team this season takes the spot of Jennifer Lowes who retired from the spot after the birth of her first child last year. Lee was in the top five in terms of goal differential while he was on the field and Coach Malloy expects to take advantage of that late in games.

D- Andrea Fitzpatrick (age 22- reserve) back again after seeing limited play time in the Cup of Harmony and WC 53, Fitzpatrick is expected to play a larger role in this year’s team as the starters have begun to get older. Solid across the board Fitzpatrick won’t show up on many highlight films but always seems to get her job done when she needs to.

M- Bradley Canyon (age 33-starter) a former marathoner, Bradley was a late arrival to the game of soccer despite playing some in high school and a year in college. While losing a step from his younger days, Canyon still finds himself with gas left in the tank late as he showed by playing every minute of all three of Tynelia’s Cup of Harmony overtime matches.

M- Lincoln Davis (age 32-starter) the ironically named Davis seems to take any teasing out on his opponents in the pitch. An aggressive player he is most likely to be seen up running with the strikers and is occasionally burned because of it. However Coach Malloy likes his enthusiasm for the game and his devotion to the Lord of Scores which has given him his spot on the team. Davis led all non forwards with 6 goals since Tynelia’s return to international play to put him 4th on the team.

M- Veronica Logan (age 30- starter) Logan is a playmaker and led the league in assists the past season earning her a spot on the team. The best passer on the team, she was instrumental in Tynelia’s surprising output of goals in their cup return.

M- Brad Wilks (age 33- reserve) Brad is a versatile player now permanently entrenched as a midfielder after splitting time between there and the defense.with his conservative style of play. As such Coach Malloy made sure to add him to the team in order to better protect a lead or maintain a draw late in the game. He has stated that this will be his last World Cup no matter what as he suffered knee injuries each of the last two seasons and doesn’t see himself playing for much longer.

M- Jesse Jaines (age 21- reserve) a newcomer to the team after beating out WC veteran Gregory Greenwood for the spot, Jaines is an above average shooter and passer as Coach Malloy realizes that the midfield are his oldest area on the team and is looking to bring in some younger legs to take the pressure off them. Jaines is expected to spend a good deal of time on the pitch despite her inexperience on the international stage.

M- Jeff Harrison (age 23-reserve) Another reserve from last WC who is expected to see more playing time this time around as the older legs of the starts will need to be spelled more often. As such he has been working with newcomer Jesse Jaines a great deal in order to get in synch for when both find themselves on the pitch at the same time. Coach Malloy likes his patience and his willingness not to force plays that aren’t there.

F- Jay Masterson IV (age 36, reserve) younger brother of Laurie with the same pedigree, Jay has lived up to his great-grandfather’s lineage and leads the team in scoring since Tynelia has returned to the WC. A strong and usually accurate kicker his only weakness is sometimes trying to kick the ball too hard resulting in shots flying over the top of the crossbar. Though he only finished third on the team with 5 goals last Cup his combined total of 22 leads second place Eric Daniels by 4 since WC 52.While getting up there in age Jay said his great grandfather played well into his 40s so why can’t he? However he knows he doesn’t have the stamina he used to and willingly stepped out of the starting rotation to give some younger legs a chance.

F- Eric Daniels- (age 29-starter) now a scoring machine, Eric led the league in scoring in five of the last seven seasons years. Voted “sexiest male athlete” in the five times in the last nine years according to Tynelian polls he has his own fangirl group “Danny’s girls” which follow him from game to game. With Masterson’s age ctaching up to him it is Daniels who is expected to lead the tynelian offensive attack this cup after putting a team leading 7 goals in last time around.

F- Travis Keith (age 33- reserve) still one of the best corner kickers in the league, Travis is considered more of a passer than a shooter however he will take advantage of any opportunities that present themselves forcing defenders to play honest with him. A bit upset that he didn’t get the starting job in Masterson’s place it is still unknown if this will affect his performance on the pitch.

F- Mia Watson (age 26-starter) The “Mighty Mite” as she is called due to her size (barely topping 5’1”) which she takes advantage of on the pitch as she often gets lost in the shuffle among her taller teammates. Prefers the open field breakaway where she can take advantage of her excellent ball handling. Not the strongest shot on the team but is very accurate. Finishing second on the team with 6 goals last time around, Watson is clearly the second option on the team hoping to add to her 13 goals to date.

F/M- Derek Claymore (age 22- reserve). Flexible enough to play at midfield or as a forward he gives added bench depth to the team. More of a passer than a scorer however. Gained some experience during the Cup of Harmony but played very little. He is expected to spend more time at midfield than forward this time around and may in fact switch over to midfield completely in the near future as he lacks the scoring touch to be effective as a forward most feel.

F- Dana Richardson (age 21-starter). A Divine Striker in her chapter of the church, Dana is most devoted to her Lord of Scores and is always attacking on the field. She may get beat defensively but Malloy admires her devotion and aggressiveness to the score. In fact it is this devotion which has granted her the surprising starting nod for this cup over more veteran players.

Penalty kickers- in order- 1)Watson, 2)Daniels, 3)Richardson, 4)Davis, 5) Masterson IV

Venues- Danbridge Arena (seats 98,000- location Tynelian capital of Tyr, centrally located city)

Michael McPhee Memorial Stadium (seats 67,000- location- Tyr)

Heliodome (seats 75,000-location- Varrik southern coastal 2nd largest city. Vacation capital of Tynelia- best beaches in the country just outside the city)

Frozen Palace (seats 65,000- location- Damak- northernmost large city and 3rd largest city in Tynelia, known of its ski slopes and winter sports)

THE ARCHREGIMANCY BRINGS YOU

THE MONASTIC WORLD CUP 54 SQUAD

First of all, everyone except newbies knows that the Archregimancy is a nation of Eastern Orthodox Christian monks from an alternate reality, right?

The World Cup 54 squad builds on surprisingly successful post-WC 52 team, and claims to be undefeated in tournament finals play across its last two tournaments (the post-WC52 CoH and World Cup 53 finals) after being otherwise undefeated but knocked out on penalties both times. Only two minor changes have been made to the squad.

COACH -
Fr. Sozon the Simple:
A popular holy man and hermit, but not one renowned for his intellect. Probably thinks 4-4-2 is something to do with an abacus. However, his spell in charge has seen rare success for the squad, suggesting that footballing awareness might be overrated in an international team.

GOAL
Fr. Eudoxius the One-Eyed
This former international last played in goal at the World Cup level for the Archregimancy's post-Event World Cup 48 team. Depth perception may be a problem, but that didn't stop him last time - and the team have been undefeated in the Cup of Harmony (penalties don't count), Dragonnii thingywhatsit and WC 53 (penalties still don't count) since he rejoined the team..

DEFENCE
Fr. Simeon the New Theologian
A subtle mind considered an expert on the heresies of Valentinian gnosticism and docetism. Often attempts to distract the opposition with an academic discourse on these topics.

Fr. Serapion the Immobile Had spent the last 30 years standing immobile in one place until the Cup of Harmony. Consented to join the team on the condition he doesn't have to stray from his own half. Like the squad's goalkeeper, initial scepticism on his ability to play was set aside in light of the team's recent success.

Fr. Macarius the Stylite The Archregimancy's other central defender has spent the last 50 years sitting on top of a column, which he has consented to descend from specifically for the tournament. Like Fr. Serapion, his holiness is unquestioned, but his mobility was considered a potential issue until the defence proved rock-solid in recent tournaments.

Fr. George the Perfumer Fr. George has, in holiness, kept his body untouched by water for some 25 years now, that he may better worship the Lord without distraction. Whether his name refers to his role as incense keeper at the Holy Monastery of St. Saba's in the Desert, or to his unique personal aroma is a matter of some debate; opposing forwards may wish it was the former.

MIDFIELD
Fr. Irenaeus the Ascetic
Even in an entire nation of monks who often engage in severe ascetic hermit practices, Fr. Irenaeus stands out. He eats a single bowl of beans a day, drinks nothing but rain water, and is known to run tirelessly between the caves in his mountain hermitage. But as thin as he undoubtedly is, there's no doubting that he's supremely fit, and will run many a defender into the ground.

Fr. Cyriacus the Stern Another former member of the World Cup 48 squad. Few misbehaving novices escape the judgement of Fr. Cyriacus, widely known as the one of the most intimidating monks in the entire Archregimancy. However, his habit of insisting on chastising sinners from either team - immediately, on the spot - may regrettably prove controversial.

Fr. Onesiphorus the Lame His left leg is shorter than his right leg. Well, it worked for Garrincha - and on recent international tournament form, it works for Fr. Onesiphorus as well.

Fr. Luke the Third Holy Igumen One of the most respected monks in the entire Archregimancy, Fr. Luke would almost certainly have been made Metropolitan of the Greatest Lavra decades ago if he'd shown any interest in being a bishop. Has insisted that he be included in the squad despite his frailty: he physically appears to be about 95 years old, and walks with a cane. After starting as a centre forward, he remains on the right wing where he has proven bizarrely effective.

FORWARDS
Fr. Innocent of Ariddia
The most successful international convert ever to play for the team, and coaxed out of retirement from his isolated hermitage for the second cup in a row.

Fr. Eudoxius the Fit Leading scorer for Monastic League team The Painted Monastery of Voronets for the last six seasons, and one of the most admired footballing monks in the entire Archregimancy. Had never been picked for the national team until the Cup of Harmony (perhaps because he plays for a small and unfashionable monastery) and has recently been the squad's Alan Belmore. Hopes to flourish even further in a more competitive setting - even if it means scoring fewer goals.

SUBS
GK -
Fr. Sozon of Borisoglebsky
DEF -
Fr. John the Wonder-Worker of New Patmos
Fr. Igor the Widowed
MID -
Fr. Serapion of Spaso-Eleazar
Fr. Macarius the Archimandrite of St. Catherine's in the Desert
FOR -
Fr. Michael the Unlucky
Fr. Evodius the Cripple

Formation:
The Archregimancy always plays an orthodox 4-4-2; style modifier +0.

Kit:

Team Icon

The team is always accompanied to matches by the Holy Icon of the Mother of God, Bringer of Victory, which shall be paraded before the team before all home and away qualifiers. The Holy Icon looks like:

Tips for footballing visitors to the Archregimancy:

1) Each home match is preceded by the complete Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. Rest assured that this should only require visiting teams, fans, and officials to stand for a mere 2 hours before kickoff. Consider yourselves lucky we don't use the Liturgy of St. Basil.

2) We control the nature of reality in the Dreamed Realm. This isn't used to cheat - all normal rules of football are strenuously followed - but it does have two major side effects:
A) Any injuries to either team in Archregimancy home matches are immediately healed.
B) No violent or riotous behaviour by visiting fans will be tolerated. Any such behaviour will find those responsible immediately transported back to ordinary physical reality.

3) Direct travel from ordinary physical reality to the Dreamed Realm is impossible. Some 72 hours before your away qualifier in the Archregimancy, a team of monks shall arrive in your home stadium and construct a portal to the Dreamed Realm. You may then use this to travel to the Archregimancy at your leisure.

4) Visiting support is limited to a maximum of 2,000 fans.

5) Women are not usually permitted into the Archregimancy. Exceptions will be made for visiting players and properly accredited officials - largely because we have to.

6) Formerly, the Archregimancy made a point of being resentful of being forced to permit atheists, communists, freemasons, assorted heretics and foul excelites into the Archregimancy for home qualifiers. These days the Monastic Football Association tries a little harder to welcome all of the above – though largely in the hope that might just possibly be open to conversion through a slightly more conciliatory approach.

HOME GROUND

Given Fr. Eudoxius' the Fit's recent form, the Monastic Football Association will continue to play all home matches in a field adjacent to the Painted Monastery of Voronets.

Temporary stands [bleachers] will be provided for the visiting support.

And remember... Monks don't cheat. Please.

OOC: I realise my team might present a role-playing challenge. Rest assured that once they start playing they'll play just like any other team (though they might be a bit more inclined to pray after scoring), so I have no problem with you treating the team like any other if you don't want to deal with the Orthodox Christian element.

Following the Holy Empire's Choose the Squad competition (see below for original details), HEFA have decided to pick 1-2 individuals from each of the teams that won matches for the Empire during World Cup qualification.

As a result, the Holy Empire World Cup 54 finals squad is:

GK:
A snowman. A wholly ordinary, non-sentient, immobile snowman.

DEF:
We'll be using half of the 1979 Pittsburgh Steelers 'steel curtain' to protect the snowman, and the personification of Rejistanian football to anchor the defence.

Left back: L.C. Greenwood
Centre back: Rejistania at their defensive peak - an orange-blue skinned humanoid speaking an incomprehensible language, but second to none when in defence.
Right Back: "Mean" Joe Green

MID:
A bit of a mixed bag in midfield, but at least there's variety....

Left Wing: Mr Football - a sentient football-sized football.
Left Central midfield: A rather fat and clearly out of shape comedian called Andrew Lascaro.
Central midfield: A neolithic primitive cave ursine called Uhroom-Uhroom
Right Central Midfield: the purple-skinned personification of Starblaydi football
Right Wing: A deeply devout sephardic shofar player called Aaron Cohen

FOR:
How about some bling?

Sentient football-playing elements Gold and Platinum take the field in attack. They will be humanoid and bipedal, but otherwise made entirely of the elements in question.

RP instructions are: enjoy yourselves.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Holy Empire Football Association is holding a "choose the squad" competition for WC54.

With the WC48 winners sliding down through the rankings, the previous squad vanishing into three separate realities/timestreams, and the assistant coach temporarily marooned in Starblaydia's medieval past, HEFA needs help.

All participants in WC54 - not just the nations in the same qualifying group - are be invited to come up with ideas for the Holy Empire's WC54 squad. Every idea received before and during qualification will be worked into AIF RP (though if I receive more ideas than there are matches, I'll work on a first come / first served basis, with the remaining ideas mentioned in RP, but not necessarily as the matchday squad). I will also list squad ideas in this post as they come in.

The best / most workable squad idea - on the purely subjective basis of the one I like the best - will then (assuming the Empire qualifies) be the Holy Empire's World Cup Finals squad.

Creativity is encouraged.

I will announce each squad in an RP after the previous matchday, so teams in the same group as the Holy Empire will want to watch the RP thread.

To keep things simple for our hosts, each matchday squad will always play a 3-5-2 attacking formation (overlapping wingbacks form 3-5-2 on the counterattack) using a +3 style modifier.

The immortal (in more ways than one) World Cup Hall of Fame legend Juan Tzimisces remains the coach. The famous gold and red kit (image to be posted later when I'm no longer travelling) also remains.

Squad ideas:
(underlined versions have been used at least once)

Personifications of prominent WC participating nations (Bostopia)
Sentient footballs (Unibot)
Musicians representing different musical styles (Cafundeu)
Comedians who mistakenly thought they were entering a stand-up competition (Cafundeu)
Time-displaced versions of what should be your WC squad, from different timelines where everyone had different life histories, and possibly professions. (Qlumez)
A pantheon of gods. They may be able to reshape natural forces on a whim, but that doesn't mean they know how to play soccer that well. (Qlumez)
A tribe of sentient (& football-playing) cave-bears [in contrast to cavemen] (Bears Armed)
Snowmen (and not necessarily sentient ones) (Sorthern Northland)
Clones or dream simulacra of the opposition (Sorthern Northland)
The 1979 Pittsburgh Steelers (Qazox)
Entities made up of different elements (Eastfield Lodge)
Retired championship racehorses (Newmanistan) [with apologies to Newmanistan, only referred to in passing]

Probably a little while after this one is finished, but it hasn't really started yet. Yeah, anyone can enter, just look for a post that says "World Cup 55 Sign-Ups" sometime in the next few weeks.
