SHUTOUT IN GAME ONE

Team Corraidh opened open their tournament with a loss to Shofercia last night by a score of 4-0. Outshot 21-6 in the third, the Corrish saw a potential win slip away after two solid periods. All four Shofercian goals came on the man advantage, two of which came on a five-minute powerplay after a third period melee provoked by a devstating Mark O'Sheridan hit. Six minutes into the third period, the Corrish captain caught Shofercian forward Slavik Milikov along the end boards and delivered a crushing hit prompting Shofercian defenseman Ivan Markeev to drop the gloves and so the fisticuffs began. There were three fights during the scrum which sent O'Sheridan to the locker room early, followed by another fight between Elias McGavin and Shofercia's Charlie Shen for a total of four fights in a fiesty affair.
Milikov did leave the game with an upper-body injury but was back in time to celebrate Shofercia's win with his teammates. As for the hit, O'Sheridan had this to say:
"I thought it was clean. You never like to see someone get hurt out there but (the hit) wasn't from behind or nothing; he just let go of the puck and I was finishing my check."
The Corrish saw ninety-four minutes in penalties before the game was all said and done and coach Johnson wasn't thrilled about the time spent in the box.
"We're not going to have success in this tournament if we watch it from (the penalty) box. We were in the game for two periods but we let it get away from us there in the third. We definitely have the talent to compete in this tournament but we have to remember that this isn't the CHL; the referees here call things more harshly and more often."
The Corrish take on the host team, Kelssek, tonight and look to rebound from the opening 4-0 loss.

Toyurska Ishockeyförbundet

World Cup of Hockey Roster and Media Guide

Team Nickname - Grizzlies

Head Coach - Viktor Brandin

The head coach of the Toyur national hockey team is well-known amongst the hockey faithful in Toyur, having led the historic IK Kristiansberg club to three national championships in seven years as that team's captain, and being the first player in the Elitserien to score over 1500 points in a career. Brandin has brought his attack-minded philosophy to the national team stage. While not one to shy away from the need for stay-at-home defencemen and a solid checking line to frustrate the opponent's top scorers (a line led by current Kristiansberg captain Mats Hölmqvist), he has a solid goalkeeping tandem to rely on and can focus on putting goals in the other team's net rather than focusing too much on keeping them out of their own.

The Foxes knew going into their first match they had much to do and there was clear determination shown by the players. Eleven minutes into the first period, a superb pass Pieter Morrison found winger Byron Collins who duly placed the puck passed D Land and Isles Net Minder David Leggio. A fire ignited, there were some tense moments in the closing stages of the period, as Marc-Andre Gragnani fired a shot that Timmo Daahl just managed to deflect away.

The warning shots fired, the second period was one of solid play from D Land and Isles, declaring they were not going down without a fight. eight minutes into the period, Mark Mancari made nothing shy of a beautiful wrap around that Daahl could do nothing about, and the game was level. The fire certainly didn't show and then burn out, five minutes later Tim Conboy rocketed a shot from the point that found twine and put D Land and Isles on top.

Third period started as the second one had ended, but a tripping penalty by D Land and Isles' Corey Tropp placed the Foxes on the Power Play. Working the puck around it found it's way to Erik var der Laan who fired and found the blade of Markko Hall, who deflected the puck into the net. The foxes found their wings and fought hard to draw by the end of regulation.

Overtime beckoned and Greater Cotswalds answered the call, just over three minutes in a careless block by David Leggio came back to the stick of Maarsted who passed to a waiting Gerd Schiller who flicked the puck into the net, securing the win for Arctic Foxes.

Let's Meet The New Team Members
    Posted by MetaNarrativesFTL

The team that's taken to the ice for this World Cup of Hockey is surprisingly similar to that which left São Jorge with silver medals - but features three new faces. Let's meet them!

    Mæja Snorrisdóttir
    Team: Sporting Með Blóðnasir
    Position: Goaltender
Role on national team: Backup to Jasmin Ackermann. Could start if Ackermann struggles.
Favourite word: "Dragon". Dragons have tough skins, like goalies' padding. Breathing fire would probably be impractical in ice hockey setting, though.
Weaknesses: Struggles to maintain high levels of concentration - has tendency to start doing sudoku puzzles when the puck's down the other end.
Famous relations: Father is Quodite handball legend Snorri Snorrason.

    Elisabeth Perälä
    Team: Kynythin MSC
    Position: Defencewoman
Role on national team: Starting right defencewoman. Paired with domestic teammate Anni Petäjä on the first line.
Favourite word: "Electro". When used as a prefix it instantly adds cool to every of music. Electro-pop? Check. Electro-jazz? Check. Electro-polka? Check check.
Weaknesses: Struggles with discipline, lacks a scoring touch, once murdered entire family.
    Famous relations: Um...

    Julia Johanna Lehtomäki
    Team: Greschmeier MSC
    Position: Utility
Role on national team: Fourth line defencewoman. Will probably earn more experience than minutes on ice.
Favourite word: "Sagittarius". Though like all Quodites she has a natural distaste for astrology, she likes the general idea of a star sign that can shoot you in the face.
Weaknesses: Has fallen in with the pro-elf fanbase of Greschmeier MSC, and wears fake felt elf ears on her helmet. Not a weakness except that they make her look like a complete twat.
Famous relations: According to her? Her father is High King Icoteic Happywood, Sword Master of Seventh Circle. Actually? Her father is Olavi Lehtomäki, a human resources consultant from New Cleethorpes with a drinking habit and a Lemmy moustache.

"SHOFERCIA DOMINATES THE OPENING GAME!!!"

The SSF bar, back in Shofercia's capital, Invention, was rowdy. Their team just won the opener. Two of their own, were commentators. As the opener for the Thirteeth World Cup of Hockey, and due to the respect that Shofercians had for Ozerov, as well as the repeated advertisements that the game recieved, it was heavily watched. Once it was over, numerous newspapers, commentators, bloggers, etc, wrote about the game. Here is a quote from a newspaper, whose writer summed up the game quite nicely:

Shofercia Annihilates the Opposition!

Pashkov won the first faceoff, made a skillful pass to Danilov, who saw Maksimov in the open, and passed the puck, setting up Maksimov for the wrap around. Save McNabb. Not a bad save. The faceoff was in Corraidh zone. Won by Sergeev, who quickly passed it back to Turchinsky - shot - save McNabb! Another faceoff win by Tigrov - passed it back, shot - save McNabb, rebound, and Team Corraidh is on the attack! A skillful pass enabled Justin Allison to breakway from the Shofercian defense. He's one on one with the goalie, shot - save Stolichnuy! Oh man, Allison was robbed. Faceoff in the Shofercian zone. Won by Bomb, and a stretch pass outfront, damn, icing! Adamov missed the reception, in part due to a hug given to him by Keiran Ireland. Team Shofercia went on the powerplay, which was skillfully defended by Team Corraidh, producing only a two shots on goal. Still, by this point in time, Shofercia outshot Corraidh by a total of 5 to 1.

The Shofercians continued to mount pressure against Corraidh. On one of the rushes, Taylor and Turchnski collided in the center, each going for the puck. Tuchinsky's skillful positioning sent Taylor flying accross the ice. Mumbling "I'll get you...", Taylor attempted to deliver a hit on Turchnisky, right in front of the referee. Since the hit was clean, Taylor only recieved two minutes in the sin bin. One of the fans posted a "Welcome Corraidh" sign on the sin bin, after Taylor's hit. Despite this, Team Shofercia only managed a single shot, and Corraidh recorded a single shot as well. Angry, the Shofercians continued to mount pressure, resulting in yet another Corraidh penatly. Aaron Portman hooked Tigrov, who was about to be on a breakway.

Again Team Shofercia won the faceoff, with the Rocket Line skating in the Corraidh zone, wearing out its penatly killers, not giving them a chance to change. Forty seconds into the skillful skating and passing, Team Shofercia changed, one by one. Sixty seconds were left, and the Torpedo line was up against a very tired PK unit. No matter what they tried, team Corraidh could not get the puck. The passes and fake shots drove McNabb mad. Meanwhile, Koper took the puck, passed it to Bren through Sergeev's line of shooting, Bren faked the shot, and slid it back to Turchinsky, who fired a powerful slapshot that found it's way into the back of the Corraidh net. GOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAL! And a damn well deserved one too! Thus, with the shots 7 - 2 in favor of Shofercia, the score finally became 1-0.

After the first goal, Team Shofercia tried to implement the attack-counterattack strategy. Although no goals were produced, Shofercians only allowed slapshots against their goaltender. Stolichnuy was stellar, and gave no rebounds. During the two times that Shoferica played shorthanded, they would only allow shots from the blueline, on which Stolichnuy gave no rebounds. Then Shofercians would win the faceoff, and ice the puck, taking no chances. The hitting mounted on both sides.

The second period produced a lively contest, with both sides recording nine shots, and a penatly apiece. Maksimov got a penatly for holding, and Dodge for roughing. Because Shofercia played all four lines equally, while Corraidh preferred to play the first two lines, the fatigue of Corraidh was seen at the end of the second period. This would make a crucial difference in period three. Meanwhile Stolichnuy continued his superb performance, as Team Shofercia continued to play two-way hockey, offense and defense.

The third period was looking good for Team Shofercia. They knew the opposition was being slowly worn out. And then it happened. Corraidh was on the attack, outnumbering Shofercians 3-2. Ushastik had no choice but to hook the Corraidh player, sending him to the ground, and the puck to be picked up by Stolichnuy. Another Corraidh powerplay. The Corrish mounted an intense attack, making four shots. None passed Stonewall Stolichnuy, who kept Shofercia in the game. The teams exchanged shots and hits for a few more minutes. By the sixth minute, Corraidh outshot Shfoercia 6-3 in the third period. At 6:15, Mark O'Sheridan boarded Slavik Milikov, who managed to skate off the ice, in pain. The hit produced three fights. Shofercians won all three, as players jointly skated to the penatly box.

Seeing a 5 on 3 situation, Steve Uriev pulled Victor Stolichnuy, opting for a 6 on 3 five minute powerplay. The faceoff was won by Team Shofercia, and Dat Pashkov capitalized only seven seconds after the powerplay began. As Shofercians led 2-0, Stolichnuy returned to the net. But it was unnecessary, as after the 6:15 incident, Team Corraidh could not get a single shot on goal against Team Shofercia. A period of Shofercian domination began, with Pashka Bren skillfully deflecting Turchinsky's shot into the net. 3-0.

Feeling said that Team Corraidh failed to win a single fight, and down 3-0, Elias McGavin challenged Charlie Shen to a fight. As always, Team Shofercia obliged. Before he knew what hit him, Shen landed a 1-2 punch combination in McGavin's face, prompting the latter to lose a couple teeth. 4-0 in fighting. Meanwhile the game continued.

Despite a 5 on 5 situation at 16:15, Team Shofercia continued to dominate. Frustrated, Boyd slashed Bren's stick in half, giving the Shofercians yet another powerplay, which they capitalized on. 4-0. The rest of the game saw completely Shofercian dominance over Corraidh. The opposition was beaten up and defeated. But it was their choice to play a hard hitting game against Team Shofercia, and Shofercians reciprocated in kind. If Corraidh opted to play a clean game, Team Shofercia wouldn't risk too many penalties, not preferring to watch the game from the penalty box. It just looked so much more realistic from the ice.

Milikov recovered. The hit simply produced strong bruising, and even bleeding in a few places, but those were stiched up and anasthesized, and Milikov was given extra padding for the next game. He would be able to play.

As Shofercia gears up for game 2, against Ganjapolis, they are expected to be fired up. And here's Ozerov:

"I think the victory was well deserved. We outplayed them; we won nearly all of the faceoffs. We forced them to take penalties, and capitalized on the powerplays. By the third period, they were worn out, while we were fresh. We deserved that win. Outshooting the opposition 18-0 in the final 14 minutes of the game was a nice touch. Stolichnuy was stellar. But we should not get ahead of ourselves. We only won a single game. We two more, and preferably three more victories to advance. We have four games left. We need a repeated performance against Ganjapolis. Also, these games are back to back, and Stolichnuy's probably tired. I think we should put Catnip between the pipes. And remember to keep rotating our lines, that's always a wonderful touch. Starting line should be the Torpedo Line, as they were superb in the game."

Nation: The Federal Republic of Allamunnic States
Team: Iron Tide
Team Colors: Royal Blue, Dark Grey,
Style Modifier: +3

Choose my scorers: TG me first.
Penalise my players: Yes, make sure its a roughness or contact-related penalty. I’d prefer a TG first to clear it.
Eject my players: Yes, if it fits into the game well. Don't simply eject players if it wouldn't make sense from an RP or story standpoint. TG first.
Injure my players: Yes, but I determine severity outside of game-ending for a player.
Godmod scoring: Make it interesting if you use this. TG with me first.
Godmod injuries: Make it interesting if you use this. TG with me first.
Godmod other events: Make it interesting if you use this. TG me first.

Overview: The "Volunteers" system seems to have worked well; players, at least temporarily, for the duration of their time with the team, resign all contracts with domestic teams or franchises, and join the national team full-time. This change in approach yielded the first World Bowl playoff appearances for a Fanboyist team, and a championship run for the lacrosse team, so the formerly-lackluster hockey team hopes to continue to benefit from the change in approach.

Physicality has generally been a strength of Allamunnic teams, not finesse. It’s those roots the Tide is looking to get back to, as they'll try to bludgeon every team they face with superior power, strength, and aggression, and they'll focus more than ever on playing fast and hard after being outclassed by a championship-winning Plutoni squad in the quarterfinals in the 12th WCoH. An aggressive offense will likely be the hallmark of this team. There will be a very good power-play presence for this team, with hopefully a lot of scoring overall. Expect good penalty-killing, as well. Fighting will not be nearly as prevalent as it was last time around, but it will still be a big part of the way the Tide plays.

Head Coach: Kyle Smart (Career Record: W: 32- D: 39- L: 29) - After last time, Smart (a cousin to World Bowl coach Ryan Smart) has more than proven himself after leading the Tide to their best finish in the Cup of Hockey, with a 7-1-2 record in qualifiers only falling in the playoffs to the eventual champions (Plutoni) in the quarterfinals after knocking out Sarzonia. Smart's approach of balancing finesse-offense and brute Allamunnic strength has done good things for the team, and the rough and tumble defense he espouses doesn't hurt their ability to play against the best.

1st Line - Balanced

LW#11 Danielle Andicek (Height: 5'8"; Weight: 162lbs; Age: 27 - Vienna Valkyries) - Danielle is one of many returning faces on the team; she's everything that most of the team isn't: fast, agile, and very precise. Don't look at anyone besides her to do anything terribly finesse-based or acrobatic; she's the precision shooter and the most nimble Allamunnic player on the ice. That said, expect her to be moderately high-producing for goals. Danielle used to play (and lead) the Vienna Valkyries, a middle-of-the-road team that could usually manage moderate playoff success. She's also a lefty.

C#77 Maarkus Stahlburg (Height: 6'3"; Weight: 288lbs; Age: 27 - Copenhagen Crimson) - Team Captain - Stahlburg is the elder brother of World Bowl running-back Haanryk Stahlburg. He hits hard, doesn't apologize, and until recently had a horrifying lack of subtlety. However, he’s become a prolific puck-handler and shooter in the years that have elapsed since WCH 11, and has managed to turn himself into a major hazard for defenders everywhere. Along with defenseman Artie Weiss, he's the most prone to fighting, although his discipline is getting better, but, having also played defensive line on his high-school gridiron team, can't resist a good hit, legal or illegal, as often than not. His shooting is ridiculously powerful, and is becoming reasonably accurate, so expect his output to be a lot higher than it was last time, despite occasional inconsistancies in the polish to his play. Maarkus played for the league-dominating Copenhagen Crimson. Powerplayer and Penalty-Killer!

RW#31 Honorius Skmyt (Height: 6'2"; Weight: 272lbs; Age: 26 - St. Theodore Saints) - Honorius is a lot like Maarkus as he is now, except his aim is still better. He's still a little less powerful, though he's been working on that with good results. He's also a bit less prone to acts of senseless violence, which, depending on how you look at it, is either a good thing or a bad thing. He's still a bit easier to hold up on the ice and slow down, but he's still a lot stronger than he was last time around, and he's taken on a bit of Stahlburg's punishing style, as his more-accurate shooting has rubbed off on his center. Honorius is still notably more consistant than the recently-polished Maarkus, but he's not as accurate as Danielle; he's a middle-of-the-road shooter, who should produce moderately. Honorius plays for the Saints. Powerplayer and Penalty-Killer!

2nd Line - Rotating Players and Scoring Line

LW#03 Skaade Saen-Vaalhulm (Height: 5'6"; Weight: 156lbs; Age: 20 - Iron Tide) - Skaade is another budding player, also a bit short on experience. Along with Theodur, she had yet to enter the draft when offered a spot on the Volunteers. She's a good precision shooter, and lacks some of Theodur's aggression, but she is a quite active and effective player in her own right, especially after she gains some experience. She will be lower-producing than Theodur, and shouldn’t get a whole lot of playing time, even if she will get some. Skaade has made her place domestically on the Thomasburg Penguins.

C#22 Theodur Braannur (Height: 6'1"; Weight: 228lbs; Age: 20 - Iron Tide) - Theodur is a much more talented, but much less experienced player. He's quite aggressive, and is a near-superstar. Given a few years, he will likely be a star player. For now, he will simply have to be content to be way better than a rotating player has any right to be. Powerplay and Penalty-Kill!

RW#02 Kristin Maarks (Height: 5'6"; Weight: 141lbs; Age: 24 - Iron Tide) - Kristin was a fairly noted player for the Huskies, and is a fast, accurate, and agile player. She’s got a surprising mean streak, and will team up with Theo Braannur for just about everything. Kristin will probably be moderately-producing in terms of goals. She will likely not be penalized often. Last time, she and Braannur wound up being one of the highest producing duos in the World Cup of Hockey.

3rd Line - Enforcement and Grind-Out Line

LW#25 Haanryk Muhlburg (Height: 6'3"; Weight: 309lbs; Age: 24 - Copenhagen Crimson) - Haanryk is the leading enforcer for the New Copenhagen Crimson, and is usually only too happy to deliver jarring hits and play rough. He is very aggressive, and will usually put heavy hits on opponents, but will have low goal output. Another horror from the Crimson. Surprised? I think not. Penalty-Killer!

C#01 Thomas O'Daniel (Height: 6'5"; Weight: 291lbs; Age: 26 - Wilsonville Mariners) - Thomas is similar to Haanryk, if a little less thug-like in the way he does his job. He's a good defender, and, along with Daniel Peake, is the highest producing of the three enforcers. He played for the Mariners before all of this. Powerplayer and Penalty-Killer!

RW#04 Daniel Peake (Height: 6'4"; Weight: 287lbs; Age: 27 - Copenhagen Crimson) - Daniel is a very large, powerful, and accurate player, who is the most high-producing of the enforcers, and is murderous on the powerplay. He was a key player for the New Copenhagen Crimson. Powerplayer and Penalty-Killer!

Defensemen

LD#28 Artie Weiss (Height: 6'4"; Weight: 294lbs; Age: 30 - Wilsonville Mariners) - The worst person, possibly on the planet, in terms of acts of random aggression is Artie Weiss; Some can't resist a good hit; Weiss can't resist delivering any kind of hit, again, legal or illegal. His usual method of separating attackers from the puck is to simply ram into them or muscle in, leaving it to his teammates to make sure that they get the puck from there. Artie is pretty low-producing in terms of goals, even by defensemen's standards; there are three-year-olds with more subtlety and accuracy than him, but there are rhinos with less power. In other words, he'll get the puck in if he's perfectly on target. Which might happen once a year. Artie played for the Wilsonville Mariners.

RD#66 Haanryk Grimmur (Height: 6’1”; Weight: 295 lbs; Age: 25 - Iron Tide) – Why is there another new face among the right defensemen? Because both the Greens left when the Caps recalled them to full-time play in the major leagues, that’s why. After this show of no support from the domestic team, Capitals players were barred from playing on the team. Which is why Grimmur is a new face from the Crimson. He’s a rough-and-tumble player who should complement Artie Weiss in his mission to damage everything that moves, and most of the things that don’t move.

RD#18 Joe Willems (Height: 6'1"; Weight: 212lbs; Age: 25 - Iron Tide) - Joe is a competent player, and a good, reliable, stabilizing defender. Don't expect much scoring or penalties from him. Joe played for the Northwatch Rangers.

LD#55 Joe Quinn (Height: 6’0”; Weight: 274 lbs; Age: 24 - Iron Tide) – Who’s this guy? Only an excellent defenseman from the Barrons. Joe Quinn, in addition to being a very good defensive player, with good instincts, good speed, good size, and discipline (unlike a certain fellow left defenseman), is a good shooter and can turn a turnover into a score for the Tide. Look out for this kid.

RD#24 Sheila O'Connor (Height: 5'8"; Weight: 141lbs; Age: 24 - Iron Tide) - Sheila played for Vienna Huskies, and is a reliable defender, good at separating attackers from the puck by hook or by crook, and is more than willing to smack some heads to get it back and away from their own goal. Sheila is unlikely to be heavily penalized, and probably won't get too many goals, either. Perhaps a few assists.

LD#95 Thomas McKnight (Height: 6’0”; Weight: 274 lbs; Age: 23 - Iron Tide) – Last year, Thomas McKnight saw most of his limited action at center. However, with the team's needs at defenseman increasing, the powerful, versatile young man has moved to left defenseman, and

Goalkeepers

GK#88 Vaalhulm Aandrikson (Height: 6'7"; Weight: 318lbs; Age: 24 - Wilsonville Mariners) - Vaalhulm is a man that, simply put, clogs the goal. It is nearly impossible to get shots past him for the good and simple reason that there is not much of an opening ever present because of his size. He isn't fast, but at his size, and at goalkeeper, that's not exactly a major problem. He played well for the Wilsonville Mariners. He was an early draft pick a few years back, and led a nut-crushing defense.

GK#07 Aandrik Stok (Height: 6'1"; Weight: 241lbs; Age: 23 - Iron Tide) - Aandrik is a crazily-athletic goalie who specializes in making spectacular and efficient saves. He has great stamina, and is potentially the new man rising up to take the starting goalie spot. Aandrik is also an experienced goalie, even if he's a little young.

GK#04 Piotr Ivanovich (Height: 6'0"; Weight: 236lbs; Age: 28 - Danzig Knights) - Piotr is a good goalie who played for the Danzig Knights, and led a prime defense in the league. Piotr is noted for keeping his cool under pressure, even if he doesn't make the truely spectacular saves.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Schedule:
MD#1: vs. (NR) Ganjapolis - W (4-0)
MD#2: vs. (NR) Knomasia
MD#3: vs. (#26) Shoferica
MD#4: vs. (#6) Kelssek
MD#5: vs. (NR) Corraidh

The Iron Tide gets a middlingly tough schedule; while there are unknowns like Ganjapolis (who, at time of writing, the Tide had beaten 4-0) and Knomasia and Corraidh, but with Shoferica, who are itching to redeem themselves after a poor showing last year, and Kelssek, who the Tide had a hard time against last year, in one case losing defenseman Artie Weiss to a suspension briefly before coming back to beat them in their second game en route to a playoff berth.

We're projecting the Tide will go 4-1-0 (four wins, one loss, one draw), with the most likely loss being against Kelssek or Shoferica.

It was an offensive battle... for the Elves who dominated Qazox 3-0. The Eagles had 14 penalties on the day, and spent 7 minute in the first period trying to fend off a 5-on-3 disadvantage. The best news of the day was Valanora was only 1-11 on the Powerplay, but that was enough, as Qazox seemingly could not keep the game at even strength. Up next is Eizen who blanked Dutch Africa 3-0 earlier in the day. If Qazox can keep their cool and not get penalized as often, they should be able to emerge victorious over Eizen.

A SCALE!

On a scale of 1 to 10, how impressive was the 5-1 win over Narsora?
Joe, the South: Like, six? Seven maybe? I'm pretty sure we've won 5-1 before, or something just as good, and the fact that I can't really remember who it was against probably says something. Also if you really are concerned about goal differential you should be paying attention to group, like, E.

On a scale of 1 to 100, how much can Plutoni learn from Willis Kinsey's goal?
Katie, the East: Um, maybe, like, 13 or 14. Had it been one of the other starting forwards I'd say at least 25, there's stuff we should be concerned about if we have to put their names on the scoreboard. Not great positioning on Fassly's part, I agree, but nothing too dramatic.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how important is it to have an official first line at this point in the tournament?
Kevin, the Northwest: is 10 highest or lowest?

On a scale of 1 to 128, how badly were Narsora hampered by only having two backup defenders?
Jack, the suburbs: I'd say at least a 93. Ademaro Perea Raya wasn't that bad at first, but once Atzin scored the floodgates really opened.

On a scale of 1 to against the terms of service, how surprised are you that someone on the BLOODHOUNDS actually scored a goal?
lali, midtown: hey, give them enough time, something was bound to happen.

(Goalscorers: Atzin 6:11 and Manash 14:18 into the first, Kalsy 12:02 and Kinsey 16:12 into the second, Plough 3:04 and Flurian 9:45 into the third)
You're not a vacuum; you're a black hole!

Who Is Your Favourite WCoH Player?
    Posted by ruth_babe

Similar to a feature our sister site, TalkBaseball.qd (a website. for talking. about baseball) did during WBCs past, we look at each group and ask a HHAAH regular to pick their favourite player.

    Group A
Who are you? MoisturisingLotion, HHAAH gymnastics correspondent
Who are they? Seppy Lomplop, starting left defencebot for Plutoni
Why do you like them? They narrowly beat out Pesling Flard and Kikik Ninins for silliest name, mainly on the basis of the inclusion of the "plop" sound.

    Group B
Who are you? RegardMyKneesWithTerrorAndAwe, perennial pro-Olympic racewalking advocate
Who are they? Bridget Ashford, third line left winger for Cassadaigua
Why do you like them? Meghan Stafford is ridiculously popular in Quintessence of Dust, and Andrew Preston has a pretty demented fan following here too, but for me I like a woman who's big enough to cash her own check. Geddit!

    Group C
Who are you? GreschGirl, resident fan of all things Greschmeier, knitted, and otherwise betokening Scandinavian kitsch
Who are they? Balafindien Lanethdal, second line left winger for Valanora
Why do you like them? Go Therathor!! [This was all we could get out of her, so a little commentary might be needed: Therathor's continual destruction of Greschmeier in the CHL combined with the traditionally phlegmatic disposition of Quodites has led to a certain cultish following of the Elven club. -- Ed.]

    Group D
Who are you? mizu_michu, baseball statistician extraordinaire (full-time); creator of surprisingly tasteless PhotoShopped amateur pornography (part-time)
Who are they? Jóhanna Jónsdóttir, starting center and captain of the Grey Hawkettes
Why do you like them? She's one of the few Quodite ice hockey players who doesn't regard the scoring of goals as the desecration of the quiet, stately beauty of the virgin goal net. Also nice arse.

    Group E
Who are you? drongosnorterpride, lone football fan in the windswept remains of the QNRVPL, lone advocate of intemperate pro-Eastern bigotry amid a sea of New Cleethorpes uptights
Who are they? i don't care, i just want to seek kelssek and fanboys [Sorry! - Ed.] fight to the death!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why do you like them? GGGGRRRRUUUUUDDDDGGGGEEEEMMMMAAAATTTTCCCCCCHHHHH!!

    Group F
Who are you? JinChaoFanClub486: just another guy who recognises Quintessence of Dust's reserve field hockey goalkeeper as representing the apotheosis of athleticism
Who are they? Patrik Dahlin, goaltender for Toyur
Why do you like them? Had an epic showing last time on the way to the final, including memorable performance against the Calcuttas.

Orlkjestad 1–2 Cotdelapoms

Les Pommes de Glace are off to an acceptable start after their first two matches at the World Cup of Hockey, with an overtime loss and a victory against two fellow unranked teams, most recently defeating Orlkjestad 2-1 on two goals from Princess Béatrice Island Ranger Guillaume Lajeunesse. The Jones-Drouin-Lajeunesse line contributed 17 of the 30 shots Cotdelapoms' had, and certainly seem to be carrying the load.

Head Coach Jacques Carbonneau had this to say after the match, "There's some guys on this team, and I'm not going to name any names, but they know they need to step up. If we want to beat some of the bigger lights in the world, we have to be icing four lines out there, one isn't going to cut it."

There have been rumblings that Carbonneau is especially unhappy with Rémy Tremblay and may healthy scratch him in favour of Lakers left winger Roch Cormier, who has yet to see the ice this tournament.

"I would be honoured to represent my country. I'm just happy to be here, but I'll do whatever it takes to push us forward in this tournament. If they want me on a line with Louis and Serge, I'll do what I can. If they want to switch the lines around for me to put me with Claude, since we used to play together in juniors, I'll take that too.", Cormier told Radio-Cotdelapoms.

Mossulia Echo
Beaten, as usual

Well it wasn’t exactly a thrashing by Ice hockey standards, but by no means did we not expect this to happen. With our usual pessimistic outlook on everything we just ended up thinking that really it could have been and should have been a lot worse.

The first two quarters weren’t too bad for us. The Sorthern Northlands side were playing averagely and we just about managed to contain them. Most people might have said that we should have been doing a lot better against them, seeings as all are animals live on Ice anyway, but we can just ignore them we are playing a good side, or that’s our excuse.

The second couple of quarters were a lot worse. The Sortherners were playing to win and managing to get the points that they deserved. In the end they went from 1-0 up to 4-0 up and the thrashing of us was completed. Now they defiantly won’t give us a second glance on the fixtures and results sheet, and they won’t be out for revenge like we will be now.

Next we have QoD, and actually have a tiny little bit of a chance. But still it is unlikely that we will do that well. In the stats record they have the advantage, but all of our players were born on they ice, literally. Our players will defiantly feel on home ground playing QoD, even if it isn’t home and some weird French nation.

The celebrations in Shofercia were massive, best summed up by the following headline:

Shofercia Trounces Ganjapolis! Now leads all 36 nations in the 13th World Cup of Hockey Standings!

The article continued:

With nine goals in just two games, Team Shofercia has something to be proud of. If they keep on playing the way they're playing, victory is certain. *knock on wood* After last year's humiliation, this is sweet, sweet revenge. And that's after only two months of practice. Hopefully we can become a powerhouse, like Kellsek or Fanboyists. Speaking of that duo, we're due to play the Fanboyists later tonight. Like us, they have two victories and a +8 rating. We're both high scoring, offensive, rowdy teams, so the game should be a good one. A record number of Shofercians are going to be tuning in...

Yet another article was being cautionary:

Team Shofercia Must Not Let the Wins Get to Their Heads

After a trouncing of Ganjapolis, Team Shofercia must put that game behind them, and be ready for the Fanboyists. Shofercians defeated two newbie teams by impressive margins. The numerous practices between the World Cups are paying off. But Shofercians must not get ahead of themselves. They are about to play a very tough, skillful team, the Fanboyists. We are all very proud of Team Shofercia's performance, but the time to celebrate is after the World Cup, not before it. We know we can win if we focus - FO SHO!

And here's a quick summary of the game:

As with Corraidh, Shofercia came out to dominate early on, with Tigrov scoring between the goaltenders legs, not even five minutes into the game. With two minutes left in the first period, Pashkov made a stretch pass to Maksimov, who went behind the net, faked a wraparound, passing the puck back to Danilov, who fake shot it, and slid it to Markov, whose slapshot was deflected in by Frolik Aleksandrov. 2-0 Shofercia. Basil Catnip was phenomenal, stopping 10 shots from Ganjapolis, albeit most were from outside. Catnip gave only one rebound, and Sergeev blocked the Ganjapolis shot, off the rebound, with his body. Shofercia had 13 shots, and there were no penalties.

As second period dawned, so did the competition. Beautiful skating and shooting were seen from both teams. Midway through the period, Ganjapolis managed to score, making it 2-1. With a few minutes left, Bren scored on the breakway. 3-1. Second period shots were 16-14, in favor of Shofercia, and no penalties.

Five miutes into the third period, the fatigue of the Ganjapolis players was seen, as Team Shofercia kept on changing up their lines. Twelve minutes in, Gordo Bomb dropped it back to Cake Adamov, whose shot hit the post, and landed on the stick of Charlie Shen, who promptly corrected the error. 4-1. With eight minutes left, and a three point lead, with Ganjapolis fatigued, and Shofercia still skating like it was the first period, Ganjapolis began to make mistakes. With four minutes remaining, Ganjapolis took a tripping penalty, and was promptly penalized for that by Dat Pashkov. 5-1. Three minutes remained, and Shofercians again came on strong. Ganjapolis was defending as best as they could, trying to prevent the score from being 6-1. They were saved by the bell. Shots in the third: 25-4 in faove of Shofercia.

Ozerov was on the air:

"I want to congratulate the Shofercians on their well-deserved victory! They played truly well. As long as they can keep on doing it, they have a good chance of making the playoffs *knock on wood* We had the puck right after the faceoff, played solid defense, outshot the opponent, had great rotation going between the lines, scoring from all lines, and the second goal was a beauty. We are playing like we deserve to be here, and the upcoming game is definitely going to be exciting!"

Update: "We've just been informed that Victor Stolichnuy will be in the net against the Fanboyists".

Temporary Dominance Continues

The Iron Tide added another lopsided victory to the count, as they again won 4-0, this time against Knomasia. The Allamunnic squad dominated the ice, scoring once in the first and second periods and twice in the third to put the game away. Vaalhulm Aandrikson started the first game, and Aandrik Stok started the second one, each one being perfect thus far; Aandrikson stopped all 21 shots against Ganjapolis, and Stok stopped 23 shots against Knomasia.

The scoring in the first two games has also been well-spread around; not a single player has more than one goal, with Theo Braannur, Maarkus Stahlburg, Dani Andicek, Kristin Maarks, Skaade Saen-Vaalhulm, Thomas McKnight, Joe Quinn, and Haanryk Grimmur all having accounted for scores. The Tide has been efficient on the powerplay, at 2/3, and they have been effective at penalty-killing (and at all kinds of defense, really).

When discussing the easy victories, coach Kyle Smart offered this explanation: "The first two teams we've played have sucked, simple enough. They're new to the competition, they're hastily put-together all-star teams with no team unity or chemistry, and so they're getting beaten around a lot. Quite simply, Kelssek, us, and even Shoferica have played here before, are used to the level of competition and are playing like normal against teams that just don't see it coming."

Maarkus Stahlburg noted, though: "We've got Shoferica, next, and despite their ranking from last time, they are ahead in the group standings, even if, admittedly, it's a three-way tie at the top, so far. Hopefully, we'll settle some of that out tomorrow, one way or the other, hopefully by putting ourselves on top. But we can't write them off; at this point, at best we can only say that Shoferica is at least as good as we are, if not better. We'll be approaching this with an underdog mentality, ranking be damned."

That's a good approach for them to have; the last few times the Tide has come into games as underdogs, spoiling for a fight, they've smashed their opponents, such as their second game against Kelssek last year, and even (although smashing hardly counts as a description of this one) the playoff game against Sarzonia.

"We're sick of being also-rans," Theo Braannur told us.

Vulshain's Hockey Team

The Winter Paladins Hockey Team is a new team started by recruiting the best and most talented hockey players from many different hockey teams. All of these players are young and are from various university hockey teams.

While the Winter Paladins lost their first match, they came back and scored a victory, but by the skin of their teeth. The Winter Paladins' coach, Yuriy Valery, says that the Winter Paladins are simply nervous, and that they have been training a lot. After Narsora's crushing loss at the hands of Plutoni, the players got ready for their play against Teinohikira tomorrow in AKA "The Battle For The Carton Of Lemonade". Narsora and Teniohikira were rivals and this was the match they were waiting for. They were not going to loose to Teinohikira like they did to Plutoni. So they practiced for 5 straight hours, until they were certain they were going to win. Player Apólito Mota Alfaro said in a interview for the NNBC that " I really think we have a good chance of beating Teinohikira tomorrow."

Beningrad Morning Star

Hockey chief threaten boycott after players “overworked”

Sorthern Northland's participation in future World Cups of Hockey looks to be doubt after Sorthern Northland Ice Hockey (SNIH) president Bruno Bossé accused tournament organisers of “crass overworking of the players.”

The claims come after Sorthern Northland enjoyed a 4-0 victory over Mossulia in the second match of the group stage of the tournament. The Mossulia Echo would later imply that a total of four periods of play had taken place during the match, despite a regulation ice hockey match consisting of only three periods of play.

Bossé, who admitted that he'd been unable to watch the match and instead had to rely on foreign media for details is understood to have been angry upon learning of the details of the match after stumbling across the Mossulia Echo report whilst using his works computer to search for what he described as “necessary work materials and not porn and you can't prove anything” during his lunchbreak.

In a statement Bossé accused the World Cup organisers of “treating players as slaves” accusing them of “no doubt attempting to use players as tools to generate as much money for themselves as possible like the capitalist pigdogs they probably are”.

Bossé would later add that the SNIH would be contacting the players of the national team in the near future to discuss a possible ballot on possible strike action as part of a protest the World Cup authorities, Bossé also indicated that further action would be considered stating that “should this exploitation continue, we may have to resort to boycotting future tournaments entirely”.

The chances of such a strike going ahead however look fairly remote. When contacted for comment on the situation coach Théophile Brodeur claimed that he had no fear of the players deciding to take industrial action and that he also felt that the players consider the World Cup organisers to be running the tournament in a competent manner.

“I'd be surprised if this goes anywhere, I've been very satisfied with the organisation of the tournament thus far and as far as I'm aware the players have been satisfied as well. I'm not sure where the claim of playing four periods in our last match has come from because certainly after the third period we went back into the changing rooms and then did the team-talk and warm-downs and other post-match stuff that usually happens after the match ends.”

“I suspect the Mossulian journalist has merely made some sort of error, though it's possible that they could've gone out onto the ice and played a fourth period.”

“Though if they did and their journalist is reporting that they failed to score in a period where they had no opposition I'd be very concerned if I was their coach. It'd explain their general pessimism about their chances however.”

SNIH insiders meanwhile have indicated that they expect Bruno Bossé to issue a retraction of his statements when he realises what a tit he's made of himself.

Modifier: 0, The Empire is going with a more balanced attack this year.

Team Philosophy:

Eizen will work matchups to the best of its ability, combining power and speed on each blue line pairing and bringing two high quality defensive lines to counter the top scorers on each team, and one elite scoring line that will aim to perform at an elite level even against other teams' top checking lines. Should anyone happen to get a shot through, Eizen's goaltending is some of the best in the world.

Eizen Hockey Notes:
-Sudden Death Overtime for every game, shootouts in place for exhibitions.
-Fighting is permitted and encouraged by officials to settle on ice disputes before they linger
-Strict anti-drug regulations are in effect due to health detriments, owners did not want their investments damaging themselves long term
-Ice Hockey is the most popular sport in the Grand Empire of Eizen

Imperial Sporting Press -

The Grand Empire of Eizen rounds out its World Cup 13 squad with a mixture of new faces designed to add more offensive firepower and erase the bitter memories of the World Cup XII disappointment.

Line #1: (Amazing scoring line)

-RW #8 Paavo Selanne (Alternate Captain)
-C #50 Perry Getzlav
-LW #54 Ryan Roberts

Getzlav, the overall points and assists leader in the league has some familiarity with Paavo when they teamed up with the San Atana Steelclaws to win the Emperor's Cup in 2007 before Selanne's signing with the Ultima Ice Marshals in 2009. Ryan Roberts was the rookie of the year in 2008 with the Azure Coast Krakens and has emerged as a top scorer who can also finish a check with the best of them.

Rumor has it that Paavo Selanne's first contract was painted on a cave wall somewhere south of the city of Hellsynky.

Line #2

-RW #42 Dave Carlson
-C #7 Ned Braden
-LW#69 Morris Wanchuk

This line is composed of some of the top players on the Charlietown Chieftans, an older franchise seeing a resurgence due to a tougher style of play. They have good chemistry, a killer instinct, and Dave Carlson is not afraid to lose a tooth in order to make another guy lose his.

Line #3: (Punishing, hard hitting defensive line with great forechecking)

-RW #88 Karn Gorechild
-C # 66 Bane Blackheart
-LW #16 George Pathos

These three actually play on the same team, the Oblivion City Kaos, and have the best plus minus rating of any line in each of the last five seasons. Ekles trophy winner and mustachioed George Pathos is the premier fighter in the Eizen Pinnacle League as well.

The second of the two checking lines does not hit quite as hard, but play incredibly smart defense and block a lot of shots.

Line #4:

-RW #41 Jeff Hanson
-C #26 Steve Hanson
-LW #44 Jack Hanson

The Hanson brothers have played for numerous teams together since their junior days and have a penache for breaking bones.

D Pair #1

- #27 Scott Niedermonger (Captain)
- #25 Chris Prongermeyer

The titans of the blue line in Eizen combine for the first time to make Eizen's blue line a formidable force. Capable of playing nearly thirty minutes per game if called upon, these two will be relied upon to deliver a strong showing in this tournament. Niedermongers effortless skating combined with Prongermeyer's relentless defense makes them almost unbeatable. Prongermeyer's tendency to committ penalties would be the one flaw in this pairing.

D Pair #2

- #21 Orville "Crash" Sully
- #34 Mack "Boomstick" Matthews

Also known as the "nickname pairing" as these two have the most identifiable nicknames in Eizen sports. Mack Matthews in particular got his nickname from a devastating slapshot that has been tracked as the hardest in Eizen history and is known for leaving its mark on opposing goaltender's helmets.

D Pair #3
- #6 Marvin Ellessdee
- #3 Frances Moses

These defensemen are older but still very athletic and incredibly responsible and smart with the puck. The will be a steadying influence on this young team.

D Pair #4
- #11 Ole Gustaffson
- #19 Lars Johanssen

Paired together because of their great chemistry on the North Eizen Iceshrikes, these are two of the most responsible puckhandlers in hockey.

Goaltending:

1- #35 Sebastian Jigair
2- #1 Michael Fromdwight
3- #31 Jimbo Slyce

Although Michael Fromdwight and Jimbo Slyce are excellent goaltenders, there is no doubt that the best goaltender in the Empire of Eizen and its occupied and annexed territories is Sebastian Jigair. Rising from obscurity has has elevated good teams to greatness, and great teams to championships single handedly. He has never before played with a defense in front of him even close to this good.

PP#1

-Line #1
-Scott Niedermonger
-Mack Matthews

PP#2

Line#2
-Chris Prongermeyer
-Orville Sully

PK #1
-RW #42 Dave Carlson
-LW George Pathos

PK#2
-RW Karn Gorechild
-C Bane Blackheart

PK D Pairings remain same.

The return of Reg Dunlop as head coach of the Eizen National team made waves today as the team recorded its first victory of the tournament over Dutch Africa.

"We finally got the combination of goaltending and offense we have been looking for ever since we rejoined international play. Coach Ogelthorpe was more interested in taking scalps. The guy was a lunatic, that works in the Eizen Leagues but not in international play where the rules are a lot different when it comes to taking penalties. I learned that the hard way back at the 11th cup."

Dominating during the game was the top line of Paavo Selanne, Perry Getlav, and Ryan Roberts, arguably the three best players this year who are now all on the same line for the 2010 Emperor's Cup Champion Citadel Prime Rancors, a recent team that has risen to great prominence in the reorganized Grand Imperial Hockey League.
