RP cutoff for MD9, though there will be a slight delay for scores, so keep your knickers on.

The Pheonix couldn't close out the Zebras, allowing 6 2-out runs to score in the game, as Qazox falls to 5-4 and now need most likely to win 4 of the remaining 5 games to make the playoffs. In the 1st, After a lead-off homerun by Thomas Brown off of Kayla Lutrick; Zwangzug socred 2 runs on a 2-out double to left by Ada Throop, scoring Ida Pratt and Benjamin Mercer.

In the 2nd, after getting the first two batter on strikes, Jeanne Atkins walked Lutrick, bringing up Janet Aleplow who promptly doubled in the run making it 3-1 Zebras. Qazox would cut the lead to 3-2 in the 4th with a triple to left by Dyana Garski and a Sac Fly from Chad Savoy. In the 7th, the Pheonix tied the game up due to a passed ball that scored Adele Grahame from 3rd. But once again, in the bottom of the 7th, Qazox would get burned.

After a lead-off single by Jonathan Craga; Mason Blitch reached first just beating out a double-play. Pinch hitter Cynthia Derly drew a walk on 5 pitches, and Atkins walked Aleplow loading the bases. Tonya Douman came in to face Ida Pratt and on the first pitch Pratt cleared the bases on a triple to left center, making it 6-3. Qazox did get a run back in the 8th, on a solo shot by Dyana Garski; but Gordon Chane closed out the game in the 9th to preserve the 6-4 win.

Qazox next heads back home for a pair of games vs. Navarrone and Group leaders Western cuba.

Just like that, an opposite-field blast, and already they're behind. But once again, it hardly lasts. Aleplow had flown to the shallow outfield, Keigenbey out in a weak pop-up, but Throop steps up and delivers to pull the Zebras ahead.

And maybe it's better you don't see, really, just how good Atkins' stuff is in the second. The movement on those sliders, the Zebras' helplessness at the plate. You don't really let it sink in that there's two outs, nobody on. Not paying enough attention? Or not giving up yet? It's Lutrick of all people who draws the walk, well, that's a start. And sure enough, Aleplow with another double. That's the way!

Again, the Pheonix strike quickly. Literally for Garski, who has to hurry to beat the throw (but can, of course). Although, no, to be fair, Tyson worked the count and Lutrick took her time between pitches, checking the runner once or twice. Finally he strikes out and Savoy comes up. And here, too, it's 2-2 before the run comes in.

Lutrick pitches into the seventh and you can imagine how the different commentators you've heard would react to Turner's misplay. A passed ball, of all things. When our starter can hold out this long and for once we don't have to bother with the bullpen (you're barely halfway through the group stage, are you too quick to blame them after a few bad games? are your early impressions already making a summary of the tournament for you, oh, it's sixteen so it must be that we can't hold leads? no, no you tell yourself, they were this bad last time around as well, it's a rough generation. less than a generation, a...oh who knows how old they are.) come on. Not a passed ball. Well, too late now. But it's so flukish, out of the blue, how could you have rooted, "okay, let's see, could we please not have a passed ball on this pitch? that'd be great. no wild pitch too, come to think of it."

So...okay, never mind, whatever Turner did that inning, it's not like there were two outs. That'd have been nice, in a way, if nervewracking. Remind you why baseball is baseball but you know that already, it's not like there's a need for

An
yway, there was one out. A couple of walks, an infield hit. Solid baseball. And then Pratt unleashes a triple, swung on and connected. First pitch. What you like to hear (well, not really, in this case, but it's still awesome).

Kilbourne comes in and is ineffective. No wait was it...you know this, you were following...yeah, Kilbourne, gives up a solo home run. But hey, Gordon Chane, comes in like a closer does and gets the save. Nice going.

That makes two. Two losses to unranked teams. Two blown games by Tim Sutton. As the good reporters at TFSN asked earlier, is it really good that the Falcons are relying on a spate of starting pitchers as their relievers? Only the beloved Juliana Italiana has had regular season relief experience and she has been doing quite well. Yet now the national team is stuck at 6-3 and third in the MegOil Group. Which brings us to the Falcons next game.

Quintessence of Dust, while co-hosting this 16th World Baseball Classic with our glorious nation, has had the Falcons' number since their first game in WBC 15. That three games and three losses for the Falcons against the "Things" - as I believe they are calling themselves nowadays. Even outside of the WBC Quintessence of Dust has overcome Tarrentum in baseball. In last year's Keisler Cup, the U21 Falcons lost to Quintessence of Dust's U21 players in the final 3 games to 1. That one game is the only win that any Tarrentian team, in any sport, has had against the Qodites. So as the national team prepares for tonight's game, in Tarrentum I might add, how have the previous games been against these two baseball-heavy nations?

While we have a very small sample size for our stats, the Falcons have played good baseball against the Qodites. I should qualify that remark by pointing out there are only three returning starting position players who have played the Qodites in both WBC tournaments. Gradoni has been on a small cold streak but statistics tell us that he should break out of this funk soon, but probably not against the Things. While .364 is a good BA, when compared to the other two starters, Zappa and Vallena-Favella, he is well below what the "veterans" have experienced against the Qodites. Even when Gradoni hits against the Things, he is not producing any offense. No runs, no RBIs in three games versus Quintessence of Dust.

Vallena-Favella, as expected, is the most successful hitter against the Things. A great .649 wOBA is complimented by her 1.071 Slugging Percentage. Her two home runs have helped keep the Falcons in their games against Quintessence of Dust, but have not been enough to overcome the powerhouse nation.

The pitching has been mostly suspect. None more so than the amazing decision of Tiberius Wavi to keep Romeo Vasparian in the bullpen this entire tournament! I know I'm speaking in general terms but Vasparian got a raw deal in last year's tournament when both of his starts where against the Qodites. His 3.46 ERA is respectable for two losses but his 15 hits hints at something deeper. In total, the Falcons have given up 26 cumulative hits to the Things in three games (8.67 hits per game). In Vasparians defense, he has faced 52 of the Qodite batters so hopefully he'll be giving tips and insight into their lineup.

There was little turnover from the 15th to the 16th WBC for the Qodites. The biggest notable missing name is that of Masami Tamagotchi (CF). Tamagotchi ran rampant over the Falcons during WBC 15. Yet this year, the Things have won but it hasn't been easy. Tamagotchi was a tremendous arm in the outfield as well as a big bat in the lineup. Yet the Falcons have had trouble with most Qodite outfielders in their games and really, unfortunately, expect more of the same.

The Falcons pitchers have to strive for more groundballs against the Things in their upcoming game. While both may make it to the Playoff Round, the Falcons should not leave anything up to chance. Their loss against Grantanata was another wake-up call to the team and, for all intents and purposes, this is a must win game. While they got a lucky one over Delaclava, they shouldn't expect the same this go around.

Root on the team but don't expect the Falcons to perform much different. Then again, stranger things have happened, just look at Qazox!

You're losing your mind (though that implies you had one to begin with). You know this is insane, not a bit of goofiness like rooting used to be, but just plain ridiculous. You know and you don't believe.

The game's on TV, and you see it begin well; Pratt draws a walk, Mercer singles and Throop does too. The bottom of the order comes alive in the second; Blitch singles and Brian Vaughan just thwaps a hit off the center field wall. He's a big guy, runs slowly, but he's safe. Pratt doubles them both in.

But maybe he was thrown off, running. Not that you're for the DH or anything like that but he's wild. Walks the first two, gets a double play, and then? Dmitri Augustine cranks a two-run homer.

But you're fine. They're winning. The Zebras.

And they tag on an insurance run in the fourth, actually. Aleplow laces a single into short left, Pratt grounds into a fielder's choice, but Mercer's double brings her in.

And Western Cuba scores again in the bottom half, Michael Thompson, specifically. Still, nothing of concern.

It's in the bottom of the sixth that things go wrong. This deep hit, back to the wall, and as soon as you seee the shot of it flying through the air you know it's well-hit. Not outrageously well, but well, that nice great slug look, and across your mind the flicker of get out.

No. No, bleepit, it's the wrong bleeping team, now it's going to go bleeping out to spite you isn't it it lands...at the wall. One run comes in. The relay from Throop won't be in time, another run.

Should have been paying more attention. Maybe you've had this conversation with yourself before, you just can't win. Things backfire when you are putting too much or too little of yourself into it...yet try as you might, you can't find any examples of the former.

Maybe you've forgotten. There's another, it's not even a memory, just a patch in your brain to keep coming back to. It says "remember me? you've been here before, you felt this way before. Yes, good, you remember. You remember being here. But do you remember, specifically, what happened the last time you were here? What sent you here?

No, that's right. Good. You'll forget this, too."

Western Cuba score again in the seventh somehow. A couple of hits strung together. Maybe a walk in there too.

QOXSports.com/WBC 16 Coverage

Navarrone 010 221 000 - 6
Qazox 120 100 102 - 7

The Pheonix finally got a walk-off victory, instead of being walked-off upon. Despite a good start Mike Yarbourgh's knuckleball wasn't effective enough, as Navarrone came back to take a 6-4 lead after 6 innings.

Qazox scored in the 1st on a Navarrone throwing error, which allowed Mike Stiller to score from 2nd on Garski's ground ball to third. Navarrone tied the game up on a solo HR by their catcher, but Qazox made it 3-1 on a 2-out double by Jason Tyson, which scored Grant Calvin and Adele Grahame.

In the 4th, 3 straight Navarrone singles tied the game up at 3-all. Qazox took the lead again in the bottom of the inning on a solo blast from Chad Savoy, but Navarrone hit 3 homeruns over the next 2 innings to take the 6-4 lead; chasing Yarbourgh.

In the bottom of the 7th, Qazox closed it to 6-5, on a sac fly from Savoy, scoring Stiller, but stranded 3 runners in the 7th and 8th innings. After getting pinch-hitter Juanita Sanchez on a called third strike, Qazox looked like they might go down in defeat again. Stiller singled to left and stole 2nd and Jason Tyson walked on 4 pitches. Thomas Brown came in to pinch-run for Tyson, which would prove important. Garski worked the count full and slapped a line-drive right over the head of the 3rd baseman, scoring Stiller. Brown was waved home when the left fielder bobbled the ball and slid just ahead of the throw home, scoring the winning run, 7-6 Qazox.

Up next Qazox host group co-leaders Western cuba who are 7-3, while Qazox is 6-4. A victory would move Qazox into the top 3 in the group.

LOSS:
Sofie Behm (1-1)

One would think that putting up eight runs on a team that has had NO coverage all Classic long would be more than enough to register a 'W'. Despite getting yet another early barrage of runs, including a Michael Hammer three run shot in the first, Behm came undone in the second. She gave up a lead-off homerun, and things just went downhill from there. By the time Paul Rudolf finally yanked Behm, she had given up five runs and left a runner on third with only one out, who eventually scored on a sharp single. "I can't explain what went wrong, and neither can she [Behm]." Rudolf said in the post-game interview. "Some times these things happens. They've got a good team over there, but I have to call fluke on this one."

The Nordics got another homerun, a solo shot from Hammer and a two run double from Kathrin Jordan. Even so, the Nordics bullpen was unable to stop the bleeding and gave up three more runs.

Johnny Stryker 1 (4)

The Nordics got an early lead when cap'n Johnny Stryker hit a two run blast to deep right, and never looked back as they righted the ship against Virabia. THANKFULLY the pitching held up this time as Matthew Shaporio went the distance, tossing a complete game that featured six strike outs and one walk. Kathrin Jordan had a two run double in the second, and Kevin Monroe and Jill Haviland picked up RBI doubles!

Sorry that this is coming 10 minutes early, but I have literally just run home from a party to do this and am heading back out now. Which is, really, pretty damn sad.

Anyway, RP cutoff. Tomorrow is an off day.

Mossulia Echo

World Baseball classic update

Mossulia after weeks of hard work in the world baseball classic finally look like they are about to amount to something. They are in position for a play off spot and are pushing ever closer to the play-off's. Truth be told we need the money because if we don't win anything here we don't get any prize money and the players are executed in front of a large crowd. We do this because people pay us a lot of money to see the players get executed and that makes some money back for the sports association.

Mossulia were put in an even better position after playing a team called Pacific_a. It was a great game with Mossulia crushing their opponents 14-0 without mercy. The second innings was especially good for us with Mossulia making 9 runs very quickly. The second innings left us 10-0 up and basically without a care for the rest of the game.

In other news Mossulia hasn't actually heard from the baseball classic for many weeks. The reason for this was a massive power outage that engulfed Mossulia, Kazzoria, Indiarga and Teroi. This meant that we were cut-off from the outside world and didn't even have any local channels that we could watch. Reports say that 4 million people sadly died of chronic boredom and many more were struggling with it in hospital. Anyway were back now with our electricity now, so we can yet again broadcast our TV with all our crappy channels.

Jennifer’s Space

One thing about baseball: if you miss a few days, you can miss a lot. I have had some people write in to me saying that for whatever reason, they have not been able to follow the scores as closely and as religiously as maybe they would have had normally. This can be a tough time of year, and with Cassadaigua looking to win a third straight World Cup, the attention of the nation has been towards that, even if it was qualifying against nations that we should easily be beating, and in the end, were easily beaten. Some people talk about going on vacations, and the younger demographic gets set for a new year of school. It is then, that a team blogger would be very useful, even if they were able to check the scores as closely as they would have liked. People may wonder where I have been, and I have to tell you that baseball blogging is tough, because you are playing every single day. If this were like other sports, we could through our ace pitcher out there every start, but this is a tough campaign, especially when it involves a lot of traveling. Wakeup, eat breakfast, practice, have lunch, practice or take a nap, have a meeting, play a game, have a post-game meeting, board a plane, go to sleep, wake up; rinse, lather, repeat. It’s a tough schedule for anyone, and it makes factors such as character and endurance just as important as anyone’s individual skill. The teams that are consistently successful in the World Baseball Classic are the teams that are able to do that better then anyone else.

So, in case you have missed it, and you’re a college freshman wondering how you are going to fit your and a roommate’s life inside an 18X20 box otherwise called to a dorm room, or you’re preparing to graduate in the spring, here’s a little update. We’re playing very well, with a comfortable 10-1 record, and at this juncture are playing for our seeding. We’re pitching and hitting the ball very well, and consistency has been a strength. The veterans have done a great job, and the new players are stepping up. For instance, Kiersten Murphy is hitting .433 in this Classic so far, her first ever. I expect that we will continue to play well down the stretch, as we would like to end up with as good of a seed as possible. If you get a moment, come check us out!

It was a hard day at work. One freak wanted to pay in cash and demanded you make change. It was a relief to get back to the ID card readers...temporarily. When they acted up, all you could do is sit nervously at the front of the line and wait for your supervisor to fix it. Even when they behave normally, there's no telling how long they take to accept the card. You just have to wait and go please work please work please work. Maybe that wears that part of you out for the day.

Though you do remember what you meant, about things working just because you're not thinking about them. The mp3 player had jumped to the Hot Dog Game after you'd thought about it, but once you realized it'd done that, you didn't start thinking Oh, cool, I'd like to hear The Neoreactionaries now. It wouldn't have worked, once you were really conscious of it working.

Just relax, that's all you try to do. Not that it's easy when Saint Haden jumps on Loomis in the fourth. Rider walks, Kent doubles, Young singles, Cooper walks, Nelson gets up in the bullpen, Prince pokes a single (three in, no out). Thompson skies to third, mercifully, but not-that-one Rider gets a little dribbler and another run comes in.

Well maybe you don't try to relax, it's not something you can try to do. Very well.

Craga singles. Turner fouls off a bunch, then doubles way down the line. It's close but fair. Blitch pops a single over Cooper's head. Loomis grounds to Prince unassisted; one away, though the game is tied. Aleplow walks.

Pratt laces a line drive into the outfield; Blitch scores and as Xavier Young is failing to throw Aleplow out at third, Pratt advances to second. Mercer lashes a double off the wall. Westin Jones enters the game. You wonder how Gina Croes passes these breaks. Probably doesn't need to worry about sending anybody.

Jones gets Keigenbey to fly to Cooper, Mercer is clearly thinking about going but holds up. Why worry? Throop swings hard on the first pitch, nowhere close, but eventually gets all of one. It's now 8-4.

Craga again. He walks. Kevin Van Haren is up in the bullpen. For the Saint Hadens of the world, too many relievers have to be long. Turner gets a hit. Van Haren enters. The warmup tosses look good. The first three to Blitch also do. The fourth is deposited a couple hundred feet down the left field line, well in the park but damaging enough. Loomis walks. Aleplow singles, Loomis moving slowly to second but that seems as okay as anything can (no lead is safe). Finally, Pratt strikes out looking. Not finally in terms of the game, of course, but it doesn't feel all that bad. It turns out it didn't need to.

QOXSports.com/WBC 16 Coverage

W. cuba 000 300 100 - 4
Qazox 102 000 000 - 3

Qazox once again got screwed by the umpires, as a Game winning Qazoxian Homerun was overturned, though once again TV replays shown the Umpire was wrong. This time it was a Grantanata umpire in charge, unlike the QoD/Tarrentum ones last time.

Jason Tyson doubled home Dyana Garski in the first, giving Qazox a 1-0 lead. The lead grew to 3-0 after a 2-run Shot by Garski in the 3rd; but Western cuba's Dimitri Augustine tied the game with a bases-clearing double in the 4th. Both starters, Eric Shoppach for Qazox & Evan Jackson for W. Cuba wqould not give up run until the 7th. Jackson bunted home Harry Terravic, who lead off the 7th witha triple off the right center wall.

In the 9th, Adele Grahame singled to left to lead off the 9th, bringing up Pinch hitter Grant Calvin. Calvin worked the count to 3-1 and launched what appeared to be the GW homerun to left, but the umpires ruled that the ball was foul. On replays, the ball passed behind the foul pole, meaning it was a HR, not a foul ball. Calvin would ground into a 4-6-3 DP, and Thomas Brown ended the game by being thrown out trying to steal 2nd after drawing a walk.

This is the 2nd time Qazox has been burned by instant replay, and one would think they would attempt to have it overturned when it comes up for review after this WBC.

Tarrentum Falcons Sporting News - LITE

QOD 1 3 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 - 5
TAR 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 - 1

Tarrentum failed once again to find a way to beat the Things from Quintessence of Dust. The Qodites took hold of the game early on by scoring 4 runs in two innings against Alberto Lugo.

Tiberius Wavi also brought back Woodrio Tucia early from his injury but the result was a disaster. Tucia was in the game for 5 innings and 2 At Bats but seriously injured his shoulder and is now out for the rest of the tournament. No news yet if the Falcons will be bringing anyone up for the remainder of the tournament - an announcement is expected later today.

Box score was provided by Quintessence of Dust scorekeepers

TAR 0 0 1 0 2 1 0 0 0 - 4
DEL 3 0 0 0 1 1 0 2 X - 7

W: Jason Paluca
L: Johnny Burtoni (1-1)
SV: Luis Pancevo

The Falcons dropped their third straight game, this time losing to Delaclava. The Falcons coaching staff may be feeling a bit of the heat as they move into their two-game homestand against Iron Coast (tonight) and last-place Sibirsky (tomorrow). While both should be automatic wins for Tarrentum, this WBC has shown that anyone, anywhere can lose - except for Quintessence of Dust (argh).

Tarrentum had one bright spot in the lineup as Rich Rasmussen hit a solo homerun and an RBI while going 2 for 4. Johnny Burtoni's poor performance could be a sign of greater distress in the entire Falcons pitching corps.

Late to the Party
Eight-run fourth propels Sakurakoku to victory and keeps faint playoff hopes alive

Neither the players not the coaches said anything about it during the game, but you could read it on their faces: "Surely we'll get it this time. Right?" For a time, it seemed like karma would come back to bite them as they saw their lead whittle away bit by bit, but eight runs in the fourth inning was enough for Sakurakoku as the team hung on for an 8-5 victory over the Peace Republic. The win snapped a four game losing streak.

"It got a bit nerve-wracking there," Kei Maebara said after the game, who had a 3-run homer in that inning for Sakurakoku. "But, well, we had enough to win today."

After spotting the Peace Republic a 1-0 lead off a *smudge* RBI double in the third, Sakurakoku's bats came alive as the team batted around the order in the fourth, ending with a total of thirteen at-bats in the inning, collecting 11 hits in the process. The scoring was bookended with the long ball, starting with Maebara's 3-run homer to center field on a hanging curve and ending with Daisuke Taguchi slapping an opposite-field 2-run homer to left. In between, Toya Kaneda and Kenta Morita scored off of singles by Seiji Inugami and Hideo Uehara, respectively. After Taguchi's home run, Sakurakoku managed to load the bases again before Peace Republic's reliever got out of the inning by striking out Inugami's second at-bat of the inning.

The other story of the game was the continuing struggles of the Sakurakoku pitching staff. The fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth innings all saw runners in scoring position, all by different pitchers. Starter Taro Izumi in the fifth, allowing a two-run double to left to *smudge*, who's batted ball managed to just elude Maebara's glove. Shizuma Murase inherited runners on first and third with one out after coming to replace Izumi and allowed a sacrifice fly to right field. Sousuke Hayasaka came in the seventh with a runner on first after Murase was taken out after coming up with muscle cramps - the runner stole second and was batted in on a single to left-center. (Murase was checked out by the medical staff and Manager Hayato Kojima said he appeared to be fine.) Only in the eighth was Sakurakoku able to work out of a jam: Reito Tachibana allowed a double to *smudge*, who reached third on a wild pitch. Tachibana was able to induce a pop-up to *smudge* and then strike out *smudge* to end the inning.

The long bright spot pitching-wise for Sakurakoku came from Natsuki Minamoto, who came into the game in the ninth with normal closer Kouhei Miyabara unavailable following the previous game at Tentalon, where he allowed two-run walkoff homer. Minamoto brought welcome stability to the mound, first by striking out *smudge* on a full-count fastball low and inside that caught the corner of the plate. She then induced a broken-bat *smudge* ground out to short before nailing *smudge* on an inside fastball for a second strikeout to end the game. "She's definitely matured," Kojima said. "It's definitely someone to look forward to in future tournaments."

The future will have to do - the four-game losing streak that Sakurakoku had entering last night's game has left the team at 4-7 and second from bottom in the McSquiggie's Group. With only three games left and just two playoff spots left open now that Tocrowkia has clinched a playoff berth, Sakurakoku would have to win big against Evandonia, Manticore Reborn, and Tocrowkia and hope the right results come out.
