Bonjour et Ohayōgozaimasu Kirishima. Welcome ladies and gentleman back to another edition of the Kitsune Report, brought to you by the Nagatomo Sports Network (NSN) and sponsored by Air Pacifica, and Pocari Surge. Here at the Kitsune Report it's all about Kirishinan sports however there comes a time when international football becomes the main focus. That's right World Cup qualifiers are upon us, a major tournament in its own right, where 100+ teams try and fill in a measly 30 spots whether it be by instant qualification or a playoff spot. Without any further delay let's get grooving to some world cup football yet again!

The Kitsunes will seek to avoid what happened in World Cup 75 as the last World Cup qualification was a disaster. In hindsight, if we have won the games we were supposed to win, a playoff spot at the very least, would've been easily obtained. Who could've forgotten the matchday five and twelve draws with Nordeana, or the matchday ten 4-4, draw with Shytysle or that trash of a match with Anglatia on matchday 14? The Kitsunes managed five wins, 2 losses, and five draws often times against teams out of form. A performance so atrocious that Hikaru Kyosuke, bless his soul, resigned in shame. Now I think the direction that the Kitsunes went in may be flawed. Yes being more offensive minded resulted in fewer wins against higher ranked teams while slowing the team down a bit have contributed to wins against the likes of Cosumar and Quebec. However since we are going to be defensive minded, we should commit more towards offense and attempt to overpower defensive minded teams. Seong Mi-Soo seems to have her mind made up as the Cup of Harmony wasn't too bad, question is, does she have the ability to adapt like Kyosuke once had.

With that said the Seong-era has faced it's first major hurdle during the group draw for qualifiers. It ended pleasantly but with the way things began, it makes you think only a playoff spot is possible. While I was watching the draw with some friends, we were hoping to be drawn in whatever group had favorable pot one teams. Teams such as Cosumar, West Saintland, Vilita, Brenecia, Semarland, Krytenia, Turori, Chromatika, and Gregoryisgodistan would be competitive in my opinion. However, there was a melancholic groan at the restaurant when we were drawn into Group 15 with Quebec. A team that seems set to bludgeon anyone unfortunate enough to be in the presence of such an offensive behemoth. Pot 3 and 4 provided Kirisaki and Tumbra, which while are low-end in their respected group pots, are known for their good form. Pot 5 sees a high-end Tomikosan which finished 3rd in the Baptism of Fire. With all of their BOF games played in Kirishima, I hope we are prepared to not draw with them.Hydraic Empire and Kalumba rounds out the group. While it's no group of death, the fact that such a strong team is in the Group makes a situation similar to last World Cup qualifiers. Qualifiers where we seemingly are competing with everyone for the second spot. Nevertheless, let's take a look at the schedule.

MATCHDAY	TEAM VENUE
1 v Tumbra Ostianae Magnaem Centre|Heiwa
2 @ Hydraic Empire TBD
3 v Kalumba Dreamscape Arena|Kairaku
4 @ Kirisaki TBD
5 v Tomikosan Aincrad Stadium|Akihabara
6 @ Quebec TBD
7 BYE

-MIDQUALIFICATION BREAK-

8 @Tumbra TBD
9 v Hydraic Empire Dayangseong Stadium|Imgeum
10 @ Kalumba TBD
11 v Kirisaki Aincrad Stadium|Akihabara
12 @ Tomikosan Muse Ground|Melchester
13 v Quebec Dreamscape Arena|Kairaku
14 BYE

The first thing that stands out about this schedule is the final matchday ending in a bye. What this means is that the Kitsunes should have their destiny decided before then as depending on the results of other matches are always inadvisable. The next thing that stands out is that Kirishima and the Royal Kingdom of Quebec do not meet until before the breaks, Matchday 6 and 13. What this means is the standing of the Group will depend on whoever slips first or who wins their head to head matchups. If you're the Kitsunes the team to watch out for is Kirisaki which despite being known for its lack of form, can get hot at any time. Quebec will be the real test and at least a draw in a match or two would be great. Kirishima will definitely seek to avoid consecutive Cup of Harmony appearances which will mean seeking a strong second finish. The Kitsunes at the very least need to position themselves to face the weakest opponent possible in the Group stages so focus will be key.

Pre-Qualification Friendly Review:

Kirishima managed to go 2-2 in their pre-cup friendlies. The Kitsunes defeated their matchday 1 opponent Tumbra and rivals Devonta. The problem was how they faced against better teams such as Unified Sunrise Islands and San José Guayabal. I feel that those two defeats indicate that Seong Mi-Soo's strategy for this cup is flawed. The Kitsunes will never be a defensive team nor do they have the ability to be a defensive focused team. Yes, the back four and goalkeeper can get things done but Koharu Miyamoto in LB who loves to run up to midfield and sometimes beyond, two decent center backs with chemistry and an eternally doomed and weak RB position. Holding back an offense is not defensive it is simply entering tactical purgatory. While it leaves less room for counter attacks, it keeps games close and dangerous for the weaker teams to strike. I think the Kitsunes should bite the bullet and commit to stronger offense, let Yabuta run loose, give more opportunities to Matsuoka, Ichikawa, Mizoguchi, and Izumi. We need less set pieces and more flow. To be fair the last time we used a similar strategy we were minnows that let themselves be at the counter attack mercy of bigger teams. With that said Seong Mi-Soo is smart and perhaps she is testing the waters still with her Kyosuke inspired defensive focus. One thing is for sure Mid-Qualification will be a crossroad in terms of the direction Seong Mi-Soo wants to take.

Phoenix defeat The Tidal Wake to open 76th World Cup campaign

The Kaboomlandia Phoenix got off to a good start Sunday night, defeating the Tidal Wake 2-1 in a textbook defensive match for Ryan White's 1-8-1 defensive trap. Duncan McEachern started the game, but the Phoenix could have set up a sofa and television in front of the net and it probably would have worked just as well. Rene Allard scored both goals. It was early in the third minute when the trap got results, sending Allard in on a breakaway. Defender Andy Thrower had no choice but to trip him, and so Allard was given a penalty kick up against goalie Rick Larger:

"Rene Allard here with a penalty kick. In Coach White's 1-8-1 system, the Phoenix don't get many chances like these, but Rene Allard is as good a shooter as they come. Here he is now, sizing up Larger. Allard runs up, and he makes no mistake, putting this right into the left side of the net for an early Phoenix lead."

The game would stay that way for much of the first half. The Phoenix like to work by passively forcing offsides to set up free kicks, setting up deep shots for Allard and the other forwards to chase. With the eight midfielders lined up across centre, it is very difficult to get behind the wall without going offside. In the 43rd minute, the trap got more results, as a free kick by Tanner Libin went straight to Allard, who put it away into the top corner. The Tidal Wake finally got a goal when a bad deflection off of Casey Harris's foot allowed Brandon Baylor to get a goal in from the left wing.

Next up for the Phoenix is the New Telangana Rajj, who beat out Nirvana 3-nil. Elsewhere, group favourites Chromatika and Starblaydia played to a scoreless draw.

Debutants
Part 2

Part 1

"C'mon, gosh darnet. Let me in!" A young man muttered, swiping his hotel room's keycard repetitively. The man was Curi Namba, the youngest of Qasden's national players. Since he moved out, his parents moved to a much more small home, but they insisted in paying for a hotel room for him at T.V. City's La Belgique. His girlfriend was out in Moaria with her family, unaware of his arrival. Namba laid his head to rest before receiving a text message. It was from Coach Merritt. He opened up the message, reading it to himself. "Hope you're all having a good break, because trinaing for our first qualifier starts tomorrow. Meet me at the Noveau Park in T.V. City by 2.". He sighed beneath his breath and continued his slumber.

2 pm - Nouveau Park, T.V. City

Attendance was exceptional. Everyone had made it to the park on time, as well as brought a crowd of family, friends, and fans with them to support the team. Merritt looked up and smiled before he re-shifted his lips and began to bark the day's agenda. "Listen up! I can tell everyone had a great little resting period, but funtime's over. Today, I will be pushing you beyond your capabilities. You will run until your legs numb out. You will shoot until that net over there snaps. If I see anyone bail out, they're going to get replaced, do I make myself clear?!". The men nodded and began excercise 1: running around the 5-square-kilometer-park 10 times in under and hour and a half. 5 laps in, no one showed any signs of flopping. The crowd cheered at their team's success, and not 1 single athlete fell out from the group. Xandreas stormed in front of the group, quickly followed by Darsten. Then Foster, Hero, Bostun, Abbott, everyone caught up to the speed of Xandreas with no signs of slowing down. They passed by the roaring crowd as they came to a pause, and collapsed in exhaustion. They had finished the last lap, and Merritt walked over to the group and showed their time. "57.0125 Minutes" the timer read, and Merritt temporarily grinned. "Good hustle," Merritt began, "Y'all get some water and breathe for a bit. When I blow my whistle, I want to see the starters and reserves on their respective sides. We're gonna be having a shoot-off. 1 starting striker will go against 1 reserve defender and their goalie. After the starter takes a shot, or the defenders block it, then the reserves will be shooting. The goal is to get the most goals after everyone has done it 5 times. Got it?! Good.". About 7 minutes or so later, the sound of a whistle blasted through the thousands of conversations, and the players immediately rushed to their stations. The drill commenced, and the reserves actually started out on the right foot, knocking the ball away from Bostun. Abbott positioned himself for the incoming attacker before Namba slipped the ball away from the reserve. Back and forth and back and forth, no one had scored yet. But that's when things turned south for the reserves, as the upcoming opponents were Xandreas, Darsten, and Hero. 3-0 after their first attempts, and the 5 rounds flew quickly. Hero made the final shot, ending the game, 27-19. Merritt strolled over to the exhausted group and responded, "Excellent work from the defenses, I must say. Offenses, get your selves together. I want y'all to watch some of the qualifiers from World Cup 75, because we're up against New Gazi first. If I can tell you one thing, the Cannoneers have skills. We're done playing against newbies. Oh no, we're in the big leagues, now. We'll continue practicing in Qad City, the venue of the match. Meet me there tomorrow at 2, no later.". The group broke out, and they returned with their families, booking their trips to Qad City. Merritt yawned, and walked back to his car.

1:30 PM - Qad City

Everyone arrived early again and got the exercises out of the way. They ran the same distance as Nouveau Park, finishing in 54 minutes. Afterwards, they played the shootout, where the starters won again, 34-28. They broke out and travelled together to New Qad Field. Merritt stood on the bus, looking back at the beaten, yet confident, athletes. He proceeded to notify the team of their inevitable obstacle. "Boys, I believe you are all amazing and talented kids, but half of y'all have probably never seen this stadium. Neither has the New Gazi team! We can win this, I'm positive about it. Let's start these qualifiers with a bang, shall we? Thirteen games from now, we will be looking back on this day in Electrum or Ceni, knowing this was the day our true destiny begun. Pain is temporary, but pride is forever!". The group, re-energized, hustled off the bus and into the crowded stadium's locker rooms, where they dressed in their blue and reds. As they entered the playing field, they can hear the 80,000 screaming fans, chanting their names. "Here we go." Darsten announced.

At Dazza Dallas Stadium, Chloe Dallas and Princess Laura after Jeruselem won 2-0 against Amazonesta

Chloe: This is Chloe Dallas for Naked News Jeruselem, that's Chloe with a C. I'm with the national coach for our World Cup 76 team. Princess Laura, yes she's related to me.
Laura: Good to be back on TV, in a football related show that is.
Chloe: Today it's match day 1 of the World Cup 76, it's only the beginning for everyone concerned.
Laura: Yes, considering we didn't any friendlies done this time round.
Chloe: A team from Amazonesta took on the princesses, a team we've never seen before.
Laura: At least it was a team of people, not a team of giant ants or bees.

Chloe: The Princesses were a bit rusty but won 2-0 and have the start they wanted, well we didn't lose
Laura: Yes, our first few games are bit uncertain but we're not going be pointless.
Chloe: Lots of room for improvement?
Laura: We haven't played a full game against international competition with this new team, so it's good to find what we need to fix
Chloe: But you can't complain really
Laura: We should have won on paper, and well we did

Chloe: It was a bit cold this morning
Laura: It was, I imagine some wouldn't like that. The visitors didn't mind, I guess they expected a warmer day.
Chloe: Yes, especially if you're not the type who wears pyjamas
Laura: I guess the cold wakes you up
Chloe: Any outstanding efforts today?
Laura: I was impressed by our striker Rika, she really made the opposition work hard to stop the goals

Chloe: In other games in Group 9, Cosumar drew with bears armed at the home of the bears. Second Ndakene Federation got smashed at Tamicaido away from home, and well are last.
Laura: Good to see the bears holding their own against Cosumar, a tough start to the campaign.
Chloe: Last cup, it was painful one. We failed by one away goal.
Laura: Yes, we tripped up at the last second there. I'm determined we don't repeat that.
Chloe: Things have changed since the last cup, apart from everyone ageing 4 years. You have grandchildren.
Laura: Yes, a cute little girl. Princess ... Chloe.

Chloe: Yeah I know
Laura: We didn't name her after you
Chloe: My sister is Khloe, so it's just confusing
Laura: Now that's just weird
Chloe: Well, that's it from this Chloe.
Laura: And this Laura

Chloe: And good day to all the Chloe's out there
Laura: There's a lot of Lauras too.
Chloe: I imagine

“So much for scoring goals,” Jamil Bousaid said. “Three-nil in our first Cup game. Three-nil. Against a team as light as we are.” Blake Copeland didn’t argue. “Van Maar doesn’t know how to coach this team. No wonder he had to leave Quebec for-”

“Hey, these guys are playing their hearts out,” Blake interrupted. “There’s no reason to-”

“Of course. And that’s not what I meant.Korizland is a young team, completely unknown. Quebec is a powerhouse. There are only three reasons why a Quebecois coach would come to Korizland, and the KUF1 doesn’t pay well enough for one of them. The only other two reasons are that he’s looking for a challenge or that he can’t coach back in Quebec. I don’t think he came looking for a challenge.”

“So tell that to Glover,” Blake replied, and turned to get himself a cup of coffee.

“Oh, I will.”

Greg Eason and Clay Fuller sat at the table in the hotel restaurant. Greg held his head up with his right hand staring down at his plate.

“Not even one goal,” he said. “Bad enough to lose, but not even one goal. What the hell are we doing out there, Clay?”

“We had a bad day Greg. It happens.”

“We’ve been having too many bad days.”

“Hey Greg, you’re the pitch boss, alright? Coaches can tell us whatever they want, it’s your job to lead us out there. It’s up to you to figure out how to make it work.”

“Thanks for the feedback.”

“It’s what I’m here for. Now eat your burger. You look thin.”

“Alright fellas, yesterday didn’t go our way,” Greg Eason said to the team. “Put it out of your minds. It doesn’t matter. Today is all about beating the Taeshanians. From what we can gather, they are all about the defense. So, the strike team needs to push them hard to get anything through. They still have plenty of guys to throw at us when they have the ball, so Shelton, I’ve got information on their strikers over on the table. We’ll go over video after we've finished examining their defensive posture.”

White Suns Handle Shytysle
Pearson Scores off Set Piece

If you haven't already seen Hasznia's opening World Cup 76 qualifier against Shytysle, there isn't much to recommend it. Despite the favorable result, it was hardly exemplary football by the White Suns, who looked confused and disorganized in what is supposed to be a tightly-aligned 4-4-2 diamond. Only a compact defense by the new-look back four of McAdams, Holloway, Johnson, and Villa kept the Shytysle team at bay when on frequent occasions they stole the ball from the hapless White Suns midfield.

Doyle Pearson's goal came as the lone high point in what was an otherwise a forgettable performance. Shytysle goalkeeper Duedoo got a glove on Alex Hawkins's shot to force a corner, one of three shots on goal for the Suns all match, and Carter Vick managed to arc the ball right in front of Pearson's forehead and net the winner.

Coach Byron Payne has to hope his team's jitters are gone as they face the powerhouse of Group 8, Krytenia, at Blackfort Coliseum on Tuesday, 19 July.

Red Roscoe: A Folk History
Robs from the Rich

An oft-forgotten fact of life in Hasznia under the Kingsley Republic is that while royalists represented the largest and best-armed obstacle to Kingsley control, opposition groups grew up in all corners of the nation from all walks of life. In Blackfort’s Red Cape district, communist societies operated in the open, protected by powerful labor unions and organized crime, plotting against the royalists and the Kingsley government simultaneously. One of the icons of this movement was Red Roscoe, the anonymous rapscallion who allegedly committed hundreds of crimes against government officials, police, port inspectors, and other “outsiders” in Red Cape.

Red Cape has its name from the heraldic color of House Hughes, the long-since extinct noble family which first settled there. Blackfort FC, with Red Cape the nerve center of its support, had worn red since its founding in 1909 and taken especial pride in it with the founding of blue-and-black Blackfort City in 1922. It could be said that Red Roscoe was a simply a reference to the district wherein the alleged criminal operated, but that would be incomplete; Red Roscoe was seen as a communist insurgent from the first, and that belief has colored portrayals of him across all media.

Indeed, many of Red Roscoe’s alleged victims were members of the so-called Kingsmen, Hasznia’s nouveau riche which rose in the wake of the coup to fill the void left by the nobility. No one was more detested in Red Cape than Kingsmen, and they bore the brunt of the crimes associated with Red Roscoe. Perhaps the most famous of these victims was Cedric Wilkerson, heir to the Wilkerson Pharmaceutical dynasty, chairman of the board at Blackfort City, and as close to a stereotypical Kingsman as could be found.

In the early ‘70s, Wilkerson made it a point to visit his family’s production facilities in Red Cape personally. Ostensibly, the reason for these visits was to understand the business and keep morale up, but his widely-believed ulterior motive was to discover and break up the left-leaning social groups before they could form. Indeed, Wilkerson made it a point to drop in unannounced on areas where workers were known to congregate, perhaps hoping to catch them in the act of sedition.

What followed was a six-month cat-and-mouse game that took up most of the summer and fall of 1972 as Wilkerson used his spies in the factories to root out the meeting locations and times of the unions. At first he met with considerable success, and Blackfort police were able to make arrests on his intelligence, but his luck changed on 25 October 1972, when Wilkerson led a squad of heavily-armed police and gendarmes to an abandoned warehouse where he had it on good authority that a group of would-be partisans were drilling with weapons. When the doors came down, the warehouse was empty, and Wilkerson looked a fool in front of his allies.

No one ever claimed credit for deceiving Wilkerson, but the papers were quick to credit or blame Red Roscoe. Left-leaning unions and other organizations continued to meet in Red Cape until well into the crackdowns of the late ‘80s, but Wilkerson and his fellow industrialists found themselves frozen out of the fight against them.

Firstly, an apology for my ... erratic activity this cycle ahead of time.
My laptop basically died and now I can only post RPs at work really. My phone is not made for long posts.

For my opponents...
If you need a roster, use the guys in my last Eagle's Cup squad for now, same ages.
I haven't had time to prepare a proper roster yet, sorry!
If there's anything else you need to know, just TG me. I can try and sort somethign out for you.
For the hosts...
Can you set my style mod to +1.5 please?
It will be referenced in the roster when I get it posted, but I don't know when.
Fair attribution of RP bonus: I'm borrowing A LOT of elements from the current run of Black Panther.
Not directly taking anything, but still... figured I should make that clear. Just in case.

Prologue: The dragon without wings

General Barrington Douglas, once de facto leader of the Free Lands of Cobrio, has been missing for almost a decade. An operation by former Kryosi operative turned Osarian intelligence agent Jermain Marko, with assistance from a lesser-known Osarian hacker, disrupted the general's plans to militarise the southern region and mount an attack on the capital. In the kerfuffle, the general vanished and is presumed dead. The movement halted. The nation of Cobrio's progress ceased. A tentative peace was achieved. In the absence of the general, there was instead a leadership vacuum. In order to fill it, his most trusted advisors formed a council, and discussions took place. Eventually, tribal law gained ground in the governance of Cobrio, as the only viable way to unite the numerous clans and tribes. These tribal laws would ultimately lead to the creation of a new system of governance, and the appointment of a new, spiritual and martial leader; babbanyawo kadangare.

The title of babbanyawo kadangare translates to something like "the great flying lizard", but is understood to mean "dragon"; and is awarded to the strongest, fiercest warrior across all the tribes that make up the Cobre nation. A tournament was held, adhering to ancient rules to decide who would hold the position, with the council formed by the closest advisors to General Douglas serving under this new leader. After three weeks of fighting, it was a man named Tukari Kaita who emerged victorious. Kaita was well respected among the Cobre nation, possessing the martial skill to command respect from those who valued strength, and the intelligence derived from elite education to garner respect from those who did not.

His reign began well, as he established new compounds and outposts in the central Dynapolis region, gradually expanding the sphere of influence Cobrio held in the area. But disaster struck. It is still unclear whether it was an Act of God, or if there were darker forces at play... but the disappearance of a large proportion of what was once Whittoria, to the south of Osarius, led to extreme tidal activity. Much of southern Cobrio -- the southern part of the Dynapolitan peninsula -- was devastated by tectonic activity and the tsunamis that followed.

Tukari Kaita is facing revolt in the separatist state. People are outraged at his inability to adequately protect them from the widespread famine and death that followed the disasters. Some chiefs have risen up and accused outside influences -- primarily Osarian leadership -- of deliberately orchestrating the disaster, with an aim to causing the devastation to Cobrio, to halt the nation's progress toward true independence. Kaita does not necessarily believe this, but he has not ruled out the possibility. Instead, he suspects there is a more sinister plot afoot within his nation, which IS being orchestrated by the Osarian intelligence service, or the Kryosi. It is not clear.

Meanwhile, in Osarius, the first scheduled game of the Osarian Exhibition Tour, at the JNV Arena in Jraxville, was cancelled after a bomb plot was uncovered. The evidence pointed to cobran separatist insurgents, though the Osarian intelligence agency is still looking into the matter. As a result of the plot, the entire exhibition tour was cancelled, and most major sporting events in Osarius were suspended for several months. Among those, the national GraviBall league. This has left a sizable minority of Osarians noticeably displeased. As a result, despite Osarians generally being tolerant to other cultures, there has been growing unrest. Discriminatory attacks on Osarians of certain ethnic backgrounds -- mostly kalanigo, urawaga, biafrai and akkano -- are steadily rising in incidence.

The poor health of Queen Tia, combined with civil unrest, has led to a partial state of martial law in the Atlantian Oceania nation; something that has not happened in several hundred years -- since before Osarius was a single kingdom, with various regions ruled by warrior monarchs and war chiefs. While Osarius does not have a standing military, a considerably large force of willing combatants, termed a "Peacekeeping Force" -- though ostensibly an army -- has been assembled to "help maintain public order". Three days ago, Jonathan Oshoffa died while in custody of the peacekeeping force, after being arrested during a peaceful protest in Alano. Oshoffa was revealed to be the one-thousandth individual of "Cobre descent" -- defined as a set of Osarian ethnic groups primarily originating in the Dynapolis region, particularly the southern part -- to have died at the hands of the peacekeeping force since its creation a little over a year ago. The people are outraged. In response, several Osarius-born footballers -- particularly those of Cobre descent -- have now begun protesting the Osarian national anthem and some have declared their intention to never play for Osarius at international level.

Tukari Kaita, sensing the umbrage of his people, made a formal request for a meeting with the Queen and First Minister of Osarius to discuss the issues, and was refused. Two days have passed since the Osarian snub -- claimed to be due to the Queen's poor health -- and the fury of Cobrans has only grown. There are those who have dubbed their leader "Babu-fifike", or "wingless" in mockery of what they perceive to be a lack of action against those who oppress and harm his people. Kaita fears military conflict with the vastly superior numbers Osarius could muster, and believes that a more militant approach will only lead thousands to their deaths. Osarian leadership fears a breakaway of the Cobran state, whose economy is (comparatively) thriving while Osarius as a whole struggles. Osarian First Minister Silvio Baldini faces internal pressure to handle the crisis firmly, to deter future uprisings, and is refusing to negotiate with "a terrorist organisation", leading Kaita to begin a journey across the country to the capital, where he hopes to have garnered enough support -- and possibly attention from international media -- to force a meeting, and then a diplomatic solution. To this end, he has assembled a team of skilled footballers to play exhibition matches in each of the regions, knowing the Osarian love of the beautiful game will garner him enough attention to make his statements. Some disapprove of this course of action, but Kaita will not be deterred.

In the absence of the Cobre leader, however, the spirit of unrest that plagues Osarius and had infected the southern state's lands appears to be spreading. Rapidly. Prevention has failed, and there is no guarantee a cure exists. En route to the City of Dynapolis -- the first stop on his journey; where his selected team will face a representative Dynapolis United XI -- Kaita sits quietly as news breaks of further protest in Cobrio.

The Stags vs The Kings

Brigantii play out goals galore score draw with Shmirnov on away soil.

The Stags flew to Shmirnov for their opening game of the World Cup qualifiers, hoping to put their best foot forward and put behind them the crushing disappointment of the Cup of Harmony.

Ron Winston's side lined up in their familiar 4-4-2 formation and within three minutes of kick off were 1-0 down to a Samuel Rekentower goal. A neat ball from Kidric on the right swung over Gallagher and found Rekentower who had forced his way between the two Brigantii centrebacks to lash the ball past Ray Hurst. It wasn't long before the home side had doubled their lead. A corner, swung in from the left was met by centreback Terefendric whose header was blocked by Gallagher, but the Albertpool defender was behind the line and the goal stood. 2-0 after only 28 minutes and The Stags were floundering in Shmirnov.

A little good fortune and the away side pulled a goal back before the half, a speculative effort by captain Jarred Stevenson was blocked by Terefendric, the block however redirected the ball and wrong footed Ozker Ireijen in the home goal and what would have been a routine save ended up in the top corner of the goal.

After the break, Brigantii came out fired up and went looking for an equalizer almost instantly. A neat one two between Ramsbottom and Irwin led to an opportunity for the diminutive forward, only to be thwarted by the home keeper. It was a good start to the half though and Brigantii kept up the pressure and were rewarded with a Trevor Winter goal. The Marketnewton striker found space at the back post to meet a Rowan Newell cross on the hour to bring the game back to 2-2.

The equalizer prompted the home team to come at The Stags and the next 30 minutes saw both teams pushing for a winner. It was the hosts however who retook the lead, with captain Rekentower on hand to beat two men and slot past Hurst to put Shmirnov up 3-2. With the goal coming in the 82nd minute it looked like the home side had snatched the victory and the Brigantii fans were headed home disappointed. But it wasn't to be. An 87th minute dash into the box for Michael Irwin saw him brought down by Vladimir Termic under the slightest of touches. After much protestation and claims that the Albertpool striker had dived, the penalty was given and Brigantii captain Stevenson dutifully stepped up to dispatch the late equalizer.

The Stags have a break now, but will return on Matchday 3 to face North Arabia.

--- ELSEWHERE ---

In a completely unrelated story

In a wholy unexpected twist AFC Lakecombe had topped Brigantii League 1 and claimed promotion – 1 year after narrowly avoiding relegation to League 2, finishing a single, solitary point ahead of Peterford United (who also avoided relegation on goal difference) and Castlefield Town (who weren't so lucky). Lakecombe's luck started to change when the board decided Wilburn Brasher probably wasn't the right man for the club – having led them to the brink of relegation and replaced him with Dexter Bronson.

Bronson is a dynamic, charismatic, young manager, who took one look at the Lakecombe team and said, “no, this won't do.” He changed the way the team trained, he changed the way they ate and even changed the way they travelled to matches, fostering a feeling of unity and togetherness. And it's a good thing too, although Brigantii boasts one of the richest leagues in the region, the majority of that money is held by an elite group of teams at the top of the Premier League – Marketnewton, Albertpool, Bishopbury, Rookscroft United and Rookscroft City have a monopoly. AFC Lakecombe, as a little team in League 1 don't have a great deal of cash to be throwing around at players. Bronson had to work alongside the players already at the team and found a gem in his midfield, Esme Head. The 21 year old, named after his grandmother, shone, like a brilliant strawberry blond beacon. His ball control was unmatched in the second division, his vision, he could see the game unfold in front of him unlike anyone else, it was as if he moved in some kind of Matrix-like-bullet-time and his finishing, well, that was just about up to par, it wasn't his best attribute. The 21 year old had been the star performer in Lakecombe's unexpected rise to the Premier League and it wouldn't be long before he was in contention for the national team.

T.V. Interview: Results of Matchday 1

*Tomikosan plays it's first game against Kalumba and it turns out to be a crushing defeat. The team conceded two goals each in the first and second half before Megurine scored a consolation goal, though it wasn't enough. It is a hard game for some of the fans, so they need to take it seriously and prepare for the next game. Is this the start of a nightmare or is there still any hope for it? The fans are hoping to find out!*

Interviewer: Mr. Princip, this is the first world cup qualifying game against Kalumba. It is unfortunate that you loss 1-4 over them. How does it make you feel?

Princip: Well, considering that this is our first time we are in the qualifying match, it wouldn't be a suprise if the team with more experience in past world cups beat us with that kind of score.

Interviewer: Let's talk about what have you done well. What is the star in this loss?

Princip: My plans are followed accordingly and the players seem to pick up my tactics. They know what should they do and how they need to encounter the problem. If you don't know what I mean, it's all about staying back if you're the defender and moving up fowards if you are a striker.

Interviewer: Are they any wishes that you will fufill in the next game?

Princip: I wish I could pay attention more on the tactics and plans of each team. That way, I know how to deal with the plan and instruct my players how is it done. I know it is hard for some managers but if I have the ability to understand what the team has done, we can grab our first three points.

Interviewer: What can you say about Kalumba when they face against you?

Princip: Attacking-oriented, I say! They can go past through my defenders and create more chances for the strikers to find in the back of the net. Also, my fowards don't seem to get through the strong wall. It feels like they need to climb it over and score. Chance after chance after chance and yet the keeper and it's defence is very, very tough to break it.

Interview: Thank you for the interview, Mr. Princip. I hope in the next game it wouldn't be a challenge to beat them. Your team facing Kirisaki and it should be a good win. Again, thank you.

Princip: Your pleasure.

*Meanwhile, defender Etsuo Minase felt distraught after the match, as he failed to prevent various goals from Kalumba. His sister Yoshika tries to comfort him to tell that it is just the first game. Goalkeeper Shinzo Nakamura comes to the scene and makes a clear speech about their second game.*

Etsuo: Ah lord, first game in the qualifying round and............and............uh, I'm sorry. They're too strong.

Yoshika: What do you mean, brother? It is just the first game, just relax for a bit.

Etsuo: Do you not understand, sis? We are now in a rough road to the World Cup and this is where we need to take things seriously. If we mess up all the time, our chances will be killed. There is no way we can win like that.

Yoshika: But brother, there is nothing to worry about. All we need to do now is not fooling around and focus on the game. We're not serious enough to win against them, y'know? Besides, some debutants lose the first time they play and later on they'll win more. So don't feel down to yourself, it only just make you worse.

Etsuo: Hmmm...........I guess you're right. But for how long?

Shinzo: Until it is over, of course.

Etsuo: Shinzo? What are you doing here?

Shinzo: Seems you feel worried that we might lose a lot of chances following this. Luckily for your sister, she managed to cool you down and lift up your spirits.

Etsuo: It is okay now. I feel alright.

Shinzo: Good to hear, Etsuo. Anyways, our second game is against Kirisaki. It should be an easier win for you two youngsters to prevent goals with. Just focus on the game and you should be okay now. Understood?

Yoshika: Yes, Shinzo.

Shinzo: Your pleasure, Yoshika.

The Sale

"The Escape"

Part two

With a firm boot to the release-bar of the fire escape, Gorman led them out into the blistering heat of the tarmac car park. The sun was currently right above them, casting short shadows, which allowed for no reprieve from the sweltering temperatures. Like the rest of the stadium, the entire car park had the feel of being overly new; like a pair of shoes not yet broken in. The demarked lines indicating the individual parking spaces were still pristine white, almost blinding to look at in the noon sun. Along the left hand side, palm trees had been planted at regular intervals, poking out through turf so freshly laid that you could still see where the joins were.

With the fire alarm peeping in the background, Connie followed quickly behind Gorman. She was constantly having to re adjust her grip on the box she was carrying, as the awkward size made it impossible to get her hands all the way round.

'Not much further.' Gorman said, almost to himself. 'Just along here.' He was glancing frantically over his shoulder, seemingly conscious of being followed. This in turn put Connie on edge - as not for the last time in the whole episode - she would wonder what the hell she was doing here.

'Eh, Mr Gorman...?'

'Please dear, call me Barry.'

'Okay, Barry?' Connie corrected herself. 'Speaking as someone who has been in her fair share of trouble over the years, I never consider it a good sign to be running away from your employers looking over your shoulder.'

'Former employers... former.' He repeated. 'And what a perceptive young woman you are. We don't really have time just now for me to explain.' He turned back to her grinning, as he placed his belongings on the back seat of a convertible sports car, indicating for her to do the same. 'All will, however, become abundantly clear in about thirty seconds, of that I can assure you.' Gorman pressed the remote key which opening the car doors and the pair of them jumped inside.

'What will become clear?' Connie asked, looking round in all directions, still on edge.

Gorman firmly put the car into reverse gear, swinging round hard to look over his shoulder as the powerful engines revved, sending them backwards and 90° to the left.

'Eeeeeh...' Gorman pointed in the direction of the stadium entrance. 'That!' He added as they went nosily, in a low gear, from the car park and out onto the main street. Behind them an enormous, bald headed businessman was waving his fist at them wildly, flanked by a couple of office worker who were looking concerned. The man almost seemed cartoonlike hopping on the spot, his face getting redder and redder. Connie could nearly imagine a jet of steam issuing from each ear, and a speech bubble above his head reading: "Why I oughta!"

Gorman jumped a red light, and didn't remove his foot from the accelerator, until they were out of the complex and heading down a coast road away from San Marco. Connie suddenly felt a bit more relaxed, as the wind bellowed in through the open roof, blew her hair wildly behind her. She was no stranger to trouble, as any of her previous managers could testify; but even still, the last ten minutes had been an unexpected rush.

'Reach inside the glove box.' Gorman pointed with his chin. 'There is a pouch with some CD's, put something on.'

Surprisingly the glove box actually contained a pair of driving gloves amongst other things. Connie located the pouch, unbuttoned it, and began flicking through the CDs. Failing to find anything she recognised, she picked one at random and slid into the slot on the dashboard. They were still tearing along a rugged piece of coastline, which looked nothing like the Port Christopher of the holiday brochures. To one side of them was a hard basalt cliff edge, and to the other, yellowy sea grasses concealed a relatively untouched strip of beach. The landscape had obviously meant that this area was further down the priority list in terms of development. A few cars and bikes were carked on the verge, showing that the beach was at least frequented by a few individuals, most likely with local knowledge.

'I don't know what to ask you first.' Connie shouted as the CD burst into life, playing some 1940's posi-music. 'Either where we are going, or what you did to piss that guy off back there?' Although it was cool while they were travelling, the St Johns Arsenal striker was still very much aware that she was burning, and held the CD pouch over her forehead. Part Schottian, part Newfoundlander, she didn't stand much of a chance out here.

Gorman turned the music down a little before replying. 'I should imagine you'd like to know both.' Spotting her predicament, he removed his hat and placed it firmly on her head. '...however, may I ask you kindly not to use that pouch as a sun shield, it was deceptively expensive.'

'Sor-ry' Connie mouthed returning it to the glove compartment before adjusting the hat in the wing mirror, it went surprisingly well with the black t-shirt and shorts.

'Well.. first up, we are going somewhere quite, where we are unlikely to be overheard.' Gorman said as they rounded another sharp corner at speed, still traversing the same coastal road. 'When discussing a plan of action which is tantamount to fraud, I always think it best to do so in private.' He shot her a look to confirm that she was listening. 'Secondly...' He exhaled allowing his shoulders to drop. 'Well lets just say Comrade Belousov and I haven't always seen eye to eye.' Gorman licked his lips, swallowing hard, before trying to decide whether to continue. 'Let's leave it there for now....'

'AND FEET DOWN OFF OF MY DASHBOARD!' He shouted slapping her thigh, with the back of his fingers. 'Young Madam...'

'Sorry.' Connie was forced to reply once more. 'I didn't leave a mark.'

'Firstly I shall be the judge of that.' Gorman interjected in his haughty tone. 'But secondly, it's not that - if we had an accident you'd break you neck, you silly young woman. Goodness-gracious-me.'

'Is it much further.' Connie answered with smile, happy that she had gotten under his skin a little. It was like picking at a scab for her.

Gorman narrowed his eyes before replying. 'Has anyone ever told you, you have a serious attitude problem young lady?'

'Yup, often.' Connie answered with a smile. 'My physiatrist says I display extreme sociopathic tendencies.' She held one hand aloft and began counting on her fingers. 'I have a pattern of: Distorted self-image, extreme emotions, impulsiveness, I'm sure I'm forgetting some... Oh yeah! And an addictive personality.'

'Well, listen here - rehab - if you're serious about doing this then you have to start acting like it.' Gorman was beginning to get irritated. 'What? You think because you have one side of your hair shorter than the other, and you've pissed of a few managers, you've suddenly got what it takes to be a criminal?'

Possibly sensing that she was on the verge of pushing him too far, Connie thought she'd better lay off a bit. She pulled the hat down to her eyebrows and slouched back in her seat, looking out of the window as they hit the cobbled streets of a small town or village. They were definitely well off the beaten track so to speak. Somehow they had found a quiet corner of the Islands, where the hotel chains and ex-pats hadn't yet settled, Connie guessed this was as close as possible to what Port Christopher would have looked like pre-1960.

As they crossed over a small stone bridge, and down a narrow little street of red bricked houses, Gorman pre-empted Connie's question. 'Inchwick, this place is called - and no, they don't have a football team.' He added, knowing that was her best point of reference.

The place was like a little bit of Schottia in a tropical setting, rows of small, traditional buildings, but with a few Christopheran quirks. A high canopy of trees even replicated the Schottic clouds, with the rays bursting though the gaps in the leaves, painting a pattern of light round about them. Gorman drove slowly, as the streets were narrow, with turnings that seemed to come at 90° angles. Already it felt cooler, even though Connie knew the air temperature hadn't dropped a bit. It was almost as if the fussiness and clutter of The City of Port Christopher made the weather more hot and bothersome than they might otherwise be. Eventually Gorman pulled into a gravel square, surrounded on three sides by bollards and a heave iron chain. To the outside of this was a further ring of palm trees planted in a neat line, which afforded a little more cover from the sun. Inchwick was quiet, and when they turned the ignition off, the only sounds to be heard were the birds in the trees above them, and the sound of the river they had just crossed. Connie realised that in the time they had been here, they had not passes a single person, nor had they encountered a piece of litter anywhere. Gorman lead her down what looked like it should be the town centre, going by the layout. However, none of the buildings appeared to be businesses of any sort, and still, there was not a soul in sight.

'Here,' said Gorman at last, leading them down a perpendicular alleyway which seemed to appear out of nowhere. About twenty metres down the narrow close, an arched ceiling appeared, under which it felt cool, almost like a cave. After a few metres further, they emerged in a garden courtyard, with three story tenement houses on all four sides, their neat little curtained windows looking down over the lawn beneath them. The courtyard was so narrow that the sun, even at its highest, couldn't really ground level, and instead hit half way up the far wall.

'People.' Said Connie out of surprise. The grassy area directly in the middle was dotted with picnic benches, and garden furniture, where people were sitting sipping drinks, and chatting quietly. The grass quadrangle in the centre of where they stood was a little threadbare, and bore the signs of being well trodden. If the place was hidden away, then it was a well-known secret, as the clientele all seemed to be regulars.

'People indeed.' Gorman replied as he continued, and Connie followed him down a gentle slope, which led to a low wooded door about three-quarters sized. 'Mind the step,' he instructed, as he bent his knees slightly and disappeared inside.

Connie had to duck then step down at the same time. It was kind of awkward but once she did, the door way led to a small basement room, which had been turned into a bar. The floor was dangerously uneven, and looked as through someone had poured a white cement or plaster between the gaps in the original foundation stones in an attempt at creating a level surface. The vaulted ceiling was low, with the rounded supports reaching down on all sides of them, meaning that at the edges of the room, even Connie would have been required to lower her head. The bar itself was nicely put together however, and along with the optical and taps, it was polished and well maintained. While the room might have been a little rough and ready, it was in no way shabby, and obviously had been well cared for. Inside it was notably cooler, maybe even cold, although that could have been merely in contrast to the heat and humidity outside. There were no tables in the basement, although a narrow bench ran down one side, upon which a few drinkers were sat. Behind the bar stood a young woman with a pointy face, and a very healthy tan. She wore a loose fitting blue dress and had her hair tied up away from her face.

The barperson smiled as she made eye contact with Gorman, indicating that they were acquainted. 'Morning Barry... or afternoon sorry.' She looked around to the large faced clock which sat high on the wall above her head, no doubt to help inform punters when it was last orders. 'Gin and tonic?'

Gorman seemed to be genuinely giving it consideration. 'Please Jeanie. And better make it two.' Obviously the desire to keep up appearances overrode is reluctance to drink with the car.

'Make mine a double.' Connie said confidently, looking up at the bar from behind Gorman.

'Probably not the best of ideas.' He interjected nervously. 'Lets see how we get on after one, its rather warm, we don't want to go getting dehydrated or anything.' He quickly turned back to the barperson, Jeanie, who was looking quizzically at his guest. 'Oh yes, this is my... er... niece, Petunia-Rose.' Remembering his hat, he whipped it back from her Connie's head, and nudged her forward to make her introduction. 'She is over here visiting during her summer holidays.'

'Yo...' Connie answered, bereft of enthusiasm.

'Anyway,' Gorman smiled, trying to seem relaxed. 'We'll take our drinks outside and find a shady corner.'

'No problem, Uncle Barr.' Connie answered, her words overflowing with sarcasm.

Gorman turned to her, with something in between a grin and a snarl. 'Why don't we find somewhere quiet..?' He repeated, through his gritted teeth, placing the gin and tonic, complete with cocktail umbrella into her hands, before spinning her in the direction of the door.

FLARDANIA 3-0 TUMBRA; DISAPPOINTING NIGHT AS BLUE LIONS CRUMBLE

HEIWA, FLARDANIA - THE Blue Lions suffered a disappointing night as they crumbled before their opponents to start the campaign in last place. Tumbran fans called the match "a ruddy disappointment" and "fecking bollocks" when interviewed by TBC Sports, with most seemingly heading off to the nearest establishment selling alcoholic drinks to drink away the disappointment.

But their cries were not without reason. The much-hyped second cup was due to be one for Tumbra to rebound after spending the last World Cup drawing for half their matches and losing the other half, eventually ending bottom of the group despite multiple attempts to get out of that spot.

"The team lacked energy," as one irate fan put it. "They shouldn't be wearing the national shirt, they all look like they'd rather be out of it. No wonder they were playing such bad football."

The scoring started early, with Sayo Matsuoka picking up on a mistake by Cecil Reyes, crossing it in for Joseph Yabuto who tapped it in easily past Ryan Hughes in the 8th minute. The Tumbran team looked menacing at multiple times throughout the first half, but ended up being blocked by the defence, with many balls ending up in Miyoko Hōjō's hands, or knocked away by Ayame Fujisaka.

While the performance looked good in the first half and Tumbra looked threatening during it, the second half was all but a disaster for the Blue Lions.

"Yeah, I know it wasn't good...but the atmosphere wasn't good, alright? The fans were too noisy, the lights were too bright...I couldn't concentrate on the football. It all turned out like that 7-2 defeat to HopNation all those years ago."
- Ryan Hughes after the match

Yabuto slipped another past Hughes when he wasn't looking in the 52nd minute, while a long linkup play consisting of nearly 10 passes caught the team unawares and gave the Flardanians another goal when Joshuke Ichikawa, assisted by Matsuoka in the 73rd minute. Tumbra never looked threatening in the second half, and never came close to scoring another goal, only lazily clearing balls upfield.

Manager Robin Stoff was visibly irate after the match, but verbally was less so.

"I've talked to them about today's shortcomings and what went wrong this match. Frankly, we were outgunned, outclassified and outmatched. It was a disappointing result all around and hopefully this won't happen when the Kitsunes visit us on our home ground."
- Robin Stoff after the match

New kit causes consternations amongst concerned and committed fans

But for some other supporters, the result was the last thing on their mind. Soon after viewing the highlights of the match on TV, fans were up in arms over another event - a change to the kits.

ImageImage
Left: The away kit used before the match against Flardania, in use for the WC75 cycle. Right: The new, amended away kit with the new FA crest in place of the old one.

The kits were amended slightly - where the old lion head was before, the crest of the TFA was. Fans were outraged by the apparent lack of communication between the TFA and the Supporters' Association, where fans were not notified of any upcoming kit changes.

In a statement released by the TFA, Brian Kennan urged fans "not to worry about the minor cosmetic update to the kits - as long as the same shirt is being worn, it still represents Tumbra, its fans and this wonderful country." However, he did add that the new shirts "would be 25% off until the end of the qualification cycle."

Author : Mathias Gërdorffen

I received the news of Petersen, morning concierge as soon as I was leaving to work - I leave my car parked on the same street and rent the vacant garage, as well strengthening the budget, the car, no one will want to steal so old it is:
- Lady Anna wants to talk to you.
Before you ask, I say, Lady Anna is the landlady of the building. Widow, bossy, but never bothered me. What does she want? I looked at the clock and saw that it was no time for conversation:
- Connect to her, Petersen.
Petersen is weird, silent, barely enough good day for the residents, but it is reliable. They say they have a sick daughter who creates alone - wife left him already about ten years. But that is another story.
- Lady Anna, all right? I am at your disposal.
And she told me she had received a complaint - did not say who - on I made noise, you know, like you're hammering something on Sunday - of course the condo does not allow this. I found it strange. The only other thing I did on Sunday was seriously thinking about getting another job. I do thought too high?
Not to lengthen the conversation, apologized, said I was even preaching a picture of daughter-in-law on the wall (the daughter-in-law is my daughter, I have a couple, the boy we call Schwartz), almost convinced me of lying, Mrs. Anna until she was kind, gave me a light sermon and wished me good day.
On the way to work I remembered that such noise might well have been the work of Schwartz - he's the kind of able to surprise us boy.
But I confess that I did not hear anything.
My thoughts spoke louder.
Just think back to this story noise I would have made Sunday the day before bedtime. I had a Monday long and boring - my job is boring, so boring that I will not tell anyone what I do. I'm just saying I do not see the time to change jobs - but what to do? old dog does not learn ...
But I was saying that at night, in bed, at that time the people is completely alone, the soul seems to be giving off the body, going to the most unknown far reaches, was that gave me a snap: Schwartz could not have done such the noise because spent the day out with friend of the 21 what's his name again? And it arrived late, if I remember at 10 am, and soon after went to sleep.
So before you delete that sleep almost no dreams that haunts me a few months ago, I was sure that the noise did not come from my apartment.
And so, instead of reassuring me, bothered me even more. If not so tired, I guarantee it would take to sleep because of it.
Lady Anna accused me of something I did not. I'll have to take it to clean. But how, if I even told her to get rid of a thorny discussion, he had nailed the portrait of daughter-in-law on the wall?
And who complained to her of hammering?
Questions, questions, dilemmas.
How much responsibility does a man who just wants to live in peace!

Man vs. Machine in the worldwide football fields

There is a battle being fought in the fields of Red Blackiland and around the world. Or rather, a battle outside the camps. It is a clash between the centuries-old art of football scouts versus the data analysis programs. On the one hand, experience and intuition to realize a promising player or even a future ace after half an hour. On the other, companies offering statistical packages to the best clubs. Who will win: the eye or the computer?
This shows an endangered profession: many scouts are losing their jobs and being replaced by video analysts or contracting companies services such as those mentioned above.
Employment and occupation are a way to tell. Many work receiving very little, only a small compensation for food and transport costs (there who is paid by the miles traveled). Most do it for passion for football and for the club. But it's hard work. They travel all the time, get to see ten or more games per week, feed on sandwiches, face the cold, rain and even snow to go after a chance.
And not only watch the game, or rather watch the player or players because scout who cherishes says not watch the game, but only the goalkeeper, striker or defender that he came to see. We must make detailed reports, more than ten pages on just one player. For large clubs, can be more than that.
On the other hand, how the scouts work? How to "discover" a player. Discover is a way of saying, because at the time when each cell is a camcorder and a computer information circulates more. But there are things that only the human eye can perceive. The scouts who criticize relies on videos because the angles are not always see where the observed player and what is your drive. Also, do not allow also see the essential, a kind of aura that has the player out of series. Although the player is far more observed than once before any decision is taken, the scouts claim they already know they should hire you up in half an hour. The way to move, the athletic side, the way to get the ball, with a different played by "will" demonstrated on the field and up, you see ... the way you walk. The discovery of a new talent is a kind of epiphany. A scout mentions "a voice in the head" telling you: this is!
The search for new talent begins with kids up to six years. They can not be hired, but you can make a drawer according to the parents. It is a billion dollar industry and it is obvious that not one percent of those recruited will become a professional player. Of those who sign professional contracts to 18 years, two-thirds are already out of professional football at 21 years old. Clubs like The Strip and Blueberry Cavaliers, spend tens of millions of marks a year with their academies hoping to "produce" new players for the first team.
Professional football is described by many as a cynical environment, the kind every man for himself. Among the scouts themselves, the game is always hide who they came to observe. And, if necessary, disguise claiming that this player has many flaws and does not serve, then recommend their hiring. Respondents leaders have not stopped talking about the players clearly as commodities when indicate, for example, the issue of "resale value".

Synopsis/Plot

The storyline for Las Mafias I is a gritty drama and chronicles the rise of Francisco Deliz, the son of Centralis immigrants. Deliz looks through a photo album, as he begins to tell his story on voiceover. Deliz was born in Lulai,Paymina, in an poor family. A few years later, he and his family immigrate to the city of Vladivostok in San José Guayabal, but they are no better off there than they were in Lulai. In the school, Deliz gets involved with a local criminal named Berto Tejada, who eventually becomes his best friend. As the game progresses, Deliz joins in one of the three most important mafia families in San José Guayabal and becomes a "made man", as does his best friend Berto Tejeda. The story begins with the player character Deliz returning home from Corvidae War. Deliz had joined the Guayabalense Army, as a way of avoiding jail time for a botched robbery. He was being shot and sent home on leave and quickly returned to Vladivostok. Deliz is discharged, courtesy of Tejeda's mob connections, and learns that his deceased father left his mother and sister in massive debt. Needing and hoping for money, Deliz goes to Tejeda, who introduces him to Ricardo Perrón, a made man of the Mafia, working for a mob boss, Pang Kweon-Jeol, from the Quebecois Family. Deliz reunites with his old friend, Berto Tejeda , and the two quickly embark upon a life of crime.

The game contains around two and half hours of in-game cutscenes with a screenplay of 710 pages. Thomas Spiel, the writer and director of the original and the sequel, discussed the angle of the new game of Das SpielHaus: ''The first game from the company, Montreal Noire, was a sucess, telling us about the life of the legend Ko-han as a detective and the corruption inside a police department and city. This game was dark but with a bit of a philosophical view. Las Mafias is a real, much darker world, and the decisions and events are based in the real life.'' You surely can expect a high body count in this story set in the San José Guayabal of 2040-2050, but those deaths will come the intelligent and hard way, more with strategic operations more than massive shootouts and fights.

Controls include a cover and hide system that allows the player to take cover and hide behind objects, rather than just entering an useless crouch pose behind them. This feature provides tactical and intelligent support against enemies as well as protection and has become a crucial technique of these types of game. The cutscenes are generated in the real-time of the game, for example, if you go with a damaged car to the objective point and then, a cutscene starts, it will begin with the damaged car, with the same conditions as you were before, with only a few exceptions, like sequel entrances.

On The Lash With The Lads

Ahahahaha we're going to win the World Cup! 4-1, life is good, the sun shines upon Kalumba once again and the footballing gods are in our favour! Is probably what I would have written if I hadn't just seen one of the most appalling refereeing performances since I used to don the black in the sunday leagues.

My dear friend Peg (Pisstake, Mademoiselle) predicted that the Royal Kingdom of Quebec would go on to win this group and possibly the tournament proper thanks to incredible and unprecedented levels of bribery and coercion, but judging by the officials in our first game it is our glorious motherland who will go on to dominate and win the group.

I mean three penalties, come on. Even at my most jingoistic I wouldn't dream of awarding Kalumba three penalties in a game. Three?!? One hopes heads are going to roll for that abysmal performance. I know Ollie Roberts is a delicate little flower but last I checked it was a mans game, although judging by his sexual preferences I'm very much in doubt "he" is a... (Yeah we went ahead and cut this bit out because you've heard it all before from Mr Spleen and honestly with prices of ink going the way they are we can't actually afford to print every word of his diatribe, ta Ed.), and to go down like he did was embarrassing and he should probably look into restarting his ballet career because some of his dives were more than enough to grace the stage of the national ballet. And to get away with it three times is disgraceful even if he did win us the game, and one has to admire his commitment to the theatre of it all by allowing himself to be carried off on a stretcher after the third incident.

But other than the flying nancy boy and gullible referee one has to see the positives in the performance, I mean we won. Sure it will probably be our only win but at least we have a tick in the right box and we didn't do too badly against one of the more promising young teams in this years competition. Our only legitimate goal was a true blast from the past, long ball up the middle, the big lad nods it down and the wee nippy striker jinks in to score. Big Tel is doing George Davies proud with this team, and his screams of rage at conceding a late goal only confirm he is the man to carry The Kudus forwards to a respectable bottom two finish.

Anyway I can't write any more without starting to foam at the mouth about that sodding ref, so drop in next time round. Oh yeah I also have been offered an evening talk show for the duration the qualifiers, so maybe tune in and see yours truly speak with some of the greats of Kalumban football. KBC1 from 8.

Mr Spleen

Note- It's me as usual, I honestly don't know why we give him a column what with all the lawsuits but you seem to enjoy his ramblings and buy the fanzine so what can I do other than grovel at the feet of the offended party of the week. Every bloody week. So as a note to the authorities Mr Spleen's views are his own, and while I felt one of the pens was dodgy we at OTLWTL no way endorse his allegations of corruption or bribery of officials and commend them for doing one of the more difficult jobs in football.

Postby New Gazi » Mon Oct 03, 2016 8:41 am

Imari Lefisse scored the first goal for New Gazi in World Cup 76. Galahad Sekibo set up a corner at the 12th minute. He sent the ball off and it curved inwards to Imari Lefisse. The player from Vangaziland caught the pass with a header that sent the ball just out of reach of the diving keeper.

"At the time, I was very happy to open up scoring for New Gazi", Lefisse said. "Hopefully it will be the first goal of many." The journalist next asked how Lefisse felt about the goal after losing the game. "Yeah, the goal didn't mean as much since we lost. It helped keep the game a little closer. But as a team, we needed to come together for one more goal.

The Cannoneers had several chances at goal. Amari Contee broke free after a one touch through ball from Diya went forward. Contee timed his run and was onside. He went for the lob over the goalkeeper, who was running off his line, but the keeper jumped at the last minute and punched it over the goalpost.

There was another beautiful play off a corner. Jelle Asari looked to send off a corner at the 50th minute. It curved towards Mosi Okoye. Okoye leapt with a spinning bicycle kick. However the kick hit the top goalpost and landed near a defender, who sent the ball away with a booming clearance.

"The ball looked high and I felt the timing was right", Asari said. "So I went for that kick. Looking back, maybe I should have went for a header."

"I don't mind Asari taking a kick like that", said Coach Hausta. "At least it shows some spirit. it shows some heart. He almost made the shot. I would rather not have people take crazy shots. But I would also rather not stifle my players."

Despite that, the coach was seen talking to Asari about the shot after Asari was replaced later in the game. Asari is not known for his shooting. He is known for timely passing and for his style of freestyle football. Vangaziland's media would not be as kind and would criticize the player from New Gazi.

Vangaziland's most popular sports show was 'Last Minute', staring Deter J. Piff and Chip Maydress. They are both slightly controversial, highly opinionated sports journalists. Maydress called Asari's shot "selfish". Deter was a bit easier on the guy, but insisted he should have went for a header.

New Gazi's second goal, came as a result of quick passing around the formation, followed by a daft move by Contee. It resulted in Contee finding himself breaking past a defender 1 on 1 and finding just enough space to take a shot. It rolled under the goalkeeper who just didn't get to the ball in time.

The last 15 minutes were a fierce back and forth battle, as New Gazi looked to tie up the game. Unfortunately, it just wasn't in the cards. New Gazi would fall to Qasden, a team they ranked higher than.

"It's a terrible finish", said Coach Hausta. "Defense has to take the blame for this one. We have to clear the ball better. We also have to stick the defenders and shift better. We gave them too many looks tonight. We also have to do a better job of controlling possession."

Hausta would look to implement a few changes for game 2 that would hopefully result in a better finish. Deter J. Piff suggested Hausta should change the lineup.

"There are several players on the bench I'd like in the starting 11", Piff said. "Of course, I think our Vangazi brother from another mother, Martin Starr, needs more playing time. He got 7 minutes of time in game 1. He took a shot and made a few good plays. He's got to get more time. "

"Personally I like Deka Lee. I still think Diya should be the left winger. But I'd like to see Lee placed in the left middie position. I think those two would be a good combo on the left side. Deka has the kinds of dribbling skills to give defenders trouble. That can create room for other players as he'll draw double teams."

"Obviously we need to improve from here", said Coach Hausta. "It's still early in the season. We'll watch the tape and see what we can change."

What a pleasure see you again

Fluvique showed a show of guts and football and won 1-0 over Semarland in the debut of Ricardo Carusso as manager of the senior team. After the tsunami by his resignation, Gonza came back with all his magic to the team: he played with an injury on his right foot and with a hard pain in one knee and was a key piece for the victory, being the score of the only goal and lord of the match in the second half, when Fluvique had to resist the score in their own half.

The Gonza's goal changed the match. Semarland started to control the ball and, thus, the game, helped by a referee more rigorous with the tricolor team rather than the home squad. Many of the confusing situations were awarded to Semarland, in an rarefied athmosphere with the crowd pressuring every decision.

However, in the second half, the ball control of the team, the good performance of Gonza, the solidarity between Mhago and Topolsky to recover balls and the good overal solidity in defence, were keys to hold the advantage. Semarland never was close to tie the score and the few attempts they had were suffocated by the defenders and Andy Paribas.

A great victory of Fluvique, to achieve stability and a good start in the debut of Carusso, in a moment of fires and chaos in the RFA, and to dream with the qualification to Electrum and Ceni 76.

SUMMARY
FLUVIQUE, THE PROTAGONIST

At the start, Fluvique controls the ball and shows movility and quick and simple passes to take advantage of the disorder of the home team, who start to made a lot of fouls. The paysan midfielders were active and a good performance of Gonza, focused in the match.

AUZE, TO THE POST
The Mevosa Fc's forward did a powerfull shot from outside the area and the ball went to the post and then in the back of the goalkeeper and went to the corner kick. Miracle in the local goal and great movement of Auze, who shook the match's drowsiness. Fluvique more close to the goal.

GOOOOAALLL OF GONZA

Great move of Fluvique in attack. A sucession of passes and moves in ofensive left Di Angello alone in the left side and passed the ball to Auze, who tried to shot, but the ball was deflected directly to Sam. He avoided one defender and softly touched it into the net. First goal of Fluvique, very superior to her rival.

FLUVIQUE CONTINUES DOMINATING

At the dawn of the second half both teams are struggling and the game is plagued with fouls and discussions. Semarland has more posession, but the Fluviquean defence is fierce. Gonza is the flag of the resistance and he was close to score from free kick.

GONZA, ABSOLUTE KING OF THE MATCH

Sam controls the team, the match, the game and even the referee. Absolute leader, the Alkanterian support the tricolor advantage and to cool the match, tranquilizing his teammates and forcing Semarland to cross him with fouls. Great match, also, of Mhago. There are not flaws in the Fluviquean side.

FLUVIQUE WON

Great match of Fluvique and great victory in the debut of Ricardo Carusso. Gonza was the man of the match and the team, with Mhago as banner, was also solid. Poor performance of the home team, who wasn't able to tie the match despite have the ball posession more time than Fluvique.

We prefer lose with you rather than lose you

Never again, please. Is not an excessive praise or a need to praise only for praise. It is the difference between a team which has him and other which has not. Fluvique won with justice and, despite everything, never suffered big frights but the quality moments were thanks to that animal with the ball who, luckily, he decided to continue using the number 10 of the White Foxes.

Carusso was having his debut as coach of the senior team but the eyes of the multiverse were again over that different captain. With this new version with a beard and a couple of tattoos, Fluvique knew how to adjust the tactics and the football to what the game offered. Because the initial pressure of Semerland, joined with an infuriating sucession of fouls, made Fluvique enter into the chaos. And, despite the initial strugglers, the team knew to vary the paths to the victory.

But to make Gonza shine, there was another who also played a great match: Henry Mhago. From pressure to take out the team, to the accuracy to break the lines with a couple of crossed passes which were the start of clear goal attempts. When the match was more hard, the greatest ever appeared in the area, in middle of the defensive wall of the home team and, after humiliate a defender, scored the first goal.

"It was hard to me think about watch the team from outside" -he said after the match- "How I could stand while my national squad was fighting here? What I said was in a moment of anger and sadness. I felt like if the world was on my shoulders and it was too much. But the support of my family and all the Fluviqueans was too big. I could not say no"

"It's always great to start with a victory, but we need to confirm it at home. It will be very moving for me to return and we'll do our best to win" -and he later gave his view about the overall performance- "We had minutes of good football and when we had to fight, we did it. Is an new manager, new ideas and we need to get used to it. Start with a victory is nice to get confidence, be sure with our strengths and fix our flaws in the upcoming training sessions"

No one could use better the number 10. Gonza gave a plus to transform a pale team into a fearsome team. Luckily, Sam came back.

Lex Talionis, Part Two

Otavice, Jugoskania, Anglatia

Bisera Haralampieva was not at ease.

She hadn't been at ease ever since she arrived at Otavice hot on Erin and Britt's heels as they were taken to the city to face the Crows. It was the only reason why they'd left Hunsen without saying anything except to Britt's brother Jaakim, who was told to tell Bisera that they were going to Otavice on business. Ever since Erin's video had gone viral in Anglatia, both Erin and Britt had been distracted, trying to find a way to solve the problem, and it turned out that the only way to solve the problem was to go to Otavice and get it over with.

Bisera had followed them to Otavice, the Crows' home base, in the hopes of keeping an eye on them and hopefully keep them both alive. But she knew that she couldn't do that alone, especially in the home of the Crows, so she had called for backup in the form of Amelia Peña and the Huesca Cartel. The Huesca Cartel was second only to Conam in terms of both economic power and notoriety among Abanhfleft's many gangs and syndicates, but outside of Abanhfleft's sphere of influence, they were not as powerful as within the Democratic Republic, but they still held some clout. Huesca had some sort of foothold in Anglatia, that much Bisera had inferred from Amy's statements that she was at war with the Crows. Bisera had no idea if there was any Huesca presence in Otavice, but Amy had assured her that her people were on the way to cover her back and that they would make contact with her sometime soon.

Bisera had drunk her fifth glass of water--unease and nervousness always made her thirsty--when she heard a knock on the door of her rented motel room. There was no peephole in the door so she stood up and opened the door as little as possible to look at her visitor. The man at the other side was small, smaller than even Bisera, who was already quite short for a footballer. "Who are you?" she asked him. "I don't know you."

"Oh, but you will." The man then shoved open the door with his shoulder, leaving Bisera to blubber, "You can't do this! You're not a cop! I have rights!"

"You're right. I'm not a cop, and you have your rights." The man closed the door behind him and locked it. "But I'm much, much more powerful than an entire battalion of cops could ever hope to be, and I don't give a shit about your rights. Sit down."

Bisera didn't immediately comply. Instead, she walked back to her bed and tried to pick up her smarthphone while keeping an eye on the newcomer. "Who are you and what are you doing here?" she asked in a voice that sounded braver and more defiant than she actually felt.

"The name's Slobo," the man replied. "As for what I'm doing here, well, that's for your friends to decide." He set down the bag that he was carrying onto the table in the room and took out of it a video camera and a tripod. "Smile for the camera, Bisera Hristova Haralampieva," he said as he set up the equipment. Bisera's blood ran cold as she realized who exactly Slobo was. Her hands went on autopilot as they scrambled to find her phone and call for help, any kind of help.

"I got to hand it to your friends Erin and Britt, Bisera," Slobo said coolly as he turned the camera to face Bisera. "They're not budging at all. They're not backing down. Not even the threat of bodily harm makes them move. But perhaps the threat of bodily harming one of their friends is going to make them budge. Now, Bisera, I'm going to ask you a series of questions and then I'm going to need you to answer them all as truthfully as possible. Or else."

Bisera's hands fumbled her phone as her fingers finally wrapped around the rectangular thing. She didn't look back in fear of Slobo noticing what she was doing so she just had to call for help by feel.

"First question," Slobo said as he cracked open an egg that he took from the room's refrigerator and drank the yolk and the white straight. "Is your name Bisera Hristova Haralampieva?"

"Yes."

"Good. We're off to a good start. Now, are you from Pridnestrovia?"

"Yes, in a way," Bisera replied. "I was born in Abanhfleft, but my parents are from Pridnestrovia--"

Slobo held up his hand. "No need to elaborate, my dear," he said. "Question three: are you Orthodox?"

Bisera took her time answering that question. Religion was a big thing in Anglatia as far as her observations had told her, almost as big as political affiliations, so she had to consider her answer carefully. "Yes," she finally said, hoping that it was the answer that Slobo wanted to hear.

It wasn't. Slobo walked over to Bisera and pinched a nerve bundle between her shoulder and her neck. Bisera screamed at the sudden explosion of pain, but Slobo held on until tears started to pour from her eyes. "Wrong answer," Slobo said. "That is what happens to you when you give me a wrong answer. Now answer me truthfully. Are you Orthodox?"

"No," Bisera breathed out as she tried to recover from the pain. "I'm Catholic. My whole family's Catholic. We're descended from one of the first Catholic converts from Bulgaria."

"Good, very good," Slobo said. "Do you see what happens when you tell the truth instead of a lie? You do not suffer. You are not hurt. Isn't that what you want?"

Bisera didn't answer right away. She feared that if she spoke, Slobo would hurt her again.

Slobo took Bisera's head in one hand and grabbed her shoulder with the other with the intention of pressing that nerve bundle once again. "Answer me, Bisera," he said. "I hate quiet girls."

"No, I don't want to get hurt," Bisera said quickly, and then she braced herself for the pain that she knew was about to come for what little good it would do. But the pain never came. In fact, Slobo's hand moved away from her shoulder altogether. That was because he had taken out his cellphone. He listened to what the person at the other end had to say and then put down his phone quickly after that. "Well, what do you know?" he said. "Looks like your friends don't want you to get hurt after all. They've agreed to keep quiet and not press any more charges against the Crows. And it's all thanks to you, Bisera. Now it's time for me to do my job."

As soon as Slobo took off his jacket, Bisera knew what was going to happen next. "No!" she screamed as she kicked out at Slobo and tried to run away, but he caught her quickly. "Get back here, you bitch!" he shouted as he grabbed Bisera's arms. He then noticed the phone in her hands and how she managed to call someone, and he took it away from her forcefully. "Trying to call for help, eh?" he said as he tossed the phone away before manhandling Bisera back to the bed.

"Let me tell you a little bit more about why I'm here, Bisera," Slobo said as he knelt on Bisera's hands and arms to keep them from thrashing around. "All I'm supposed to do is break your legs, but Audra begged me not to do it. So instead, this is what I'm going to do to you." He unzipped his trousers and pulled them down.

"Audra?" Bisera repeated. "Audra's behind all of this?"

"No, of course not," Slobo replied. "She's just a nobody trying to pay off her debt to us. Me, on the other hand... let's just say that I'm pretty high up with these Crows. Now, I've done this thing many times before, and I promise to be very rough because I hate quiet girls. It doesn't matter if you scream from pain or pleasure, so long as you scream because of me. It really fucking turns me on."

As Slobo's hands began to work on Bisera's shorts, she opened her mouth to scream, but Slobo sent a quick jab into her gut, knocking the air out of her. He then used his left hand to cover her mouth while his right hand worked on her shorts and underwear. "Not before I'm in, you stupid bitch," he hissed."

It was all Bisera could do to keep herself from crying. This had happened before to her; twice, in fact. This had happened to her just a few weeks before she graduated from high school, and it had also happened to her when she was playing for Union Rheinburg over in Pridnestrovia. She had never told another living soul about the two times she had been raped, and she had sworn to herself after the incident in Rheinburg that she would never let it happen to her again, but she could already feel her body betraying her tonight. She could feel the strange rhythms of sexual intercourse begin to flow through her body, and there was nothing that she could do to fight it.

"Now you can scream," Slobo said, taking his hand away from Bisera's mouth. But no, she wouldn't scream. She was not going to scream and give this psychopath the satisfaction that he wanted. Her only hope now was that she would black out before Slobo finished himself with her...

And that was when the first gunshot rang out.

"What the hell?" Slobo shouted. Even as he looked up, the door to Bisera's room was kicked open by a man wearing a balaclava over his face and wielding a shotgun. He scanned the room and took a step inside, but that was as far as he got before Slobo shot him with a gun which the Crow had holstered in his discarded pants. The man with the shotgun fell to the ground dead even as another masked man charged in with a suppressed pistol. Slobo jumped behind Bisera's bed before popping out of his cover and double-tapping the masked man.

Slobo considered his options even as more shots rang out in the hallway. He could continue having his way with Bisera now or he could escape the gunfight and deal with her later. Self-preservation won out over lust in the end, but Slobo still cast Bisera a hungry look before running out of the door and into the hallway, gun in one hand and his pants in the other.

Bisera lay still in her bed, paralyzed by the speed with which the events around her had occurred. One moment, Slobo was over her like a ravenous beast, and the next, he was gone, and two dead bodies lay in her room, and what sounded like a war was going on outside. She had no idea what she was supposed to do next, so she reached out for her clothes and attempted to regain what little dignity she had left by clothing herself.

Bisera had just put her shorts back on when she heard four shots ring out in the hallway, followed by the sound of two bodies falling to the ground. And then a familiar face appeared at the doorway. It belong to Audra Jaakola, one of Bisera's teammates at Hunsen Loggers FC, and according to Slobo at least, very much involved with what had just happened. "Bisera, are you okay?" Audra asked as she entered the room with her gun in front of her, but she had to duck quickly as Bisera threw a pillow at her angrily.

"How dare you ask me if I'm fucking okay, Audra!" Bisera shouted. "I thought you were clean! I thought you were normal! But you're involved with the fucking Crows! The fucking Crows, Audra! What did I ever do to you to make me deserve this!?"

"What? What did Slobo do to you, Bisera?"

"Oh, don't act so innocent about it, you fucking bitch! You told him not to break my legs so instead, he only tries and rapes me! Why would you make him do that to me?"

"I didn't have anything to do with it, honest!" Audra shouted back. "I begged Slobo not to do anything to harm you or hurt you! But Slobo's crazy; he's a psychopath and a sadist. He can't help himself if he wants to do something that will please him and hurt others. And it's not like I wanted to be part of the Crows in the first place! They just wanted to get close to Erin and Britt, and I had to do what I had to do or else they would kill me! I had no choice!"

Once again, two masked men burst into Bisera's room, and they quickly and immediately turned their guns on Audra and opened fire. Audra had to flip the table to protect herself from their onslaught, using it as a makeshift shield. "Bisera, tell them I'm your friend!" she shouted. But Bisera didn't say anything, so Audra had no choice but to heave the table at the nearest gunman and then fire her pistol at the other gunman. As the second gunman fell, Audra turned her gun to the first guy and pulled the trigger, but all that came out of it was a hollow click. She had run out of ammunition.

Audra smashed the butt of her pistol into the temple of the first gunman, and then she reached for the stiletto blade strapped to her back and jabbed the thin, pointed blade into the gunman's neck. But as Audra leaned back over the gunman's dead body, she felt the cold steel of a pistol suppressor pressing against the back of her head.

"Bigyan mo ako ng dahilan para pasabugin ang ulo mo," a man muttered in a language foreign to Audra. Another man entered the room and pointed his gun to Audra as well. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw that Bisera was watching the confrontation silently.

"Bisera, please," Audra pleaded softly. "Tell them I had nothing to do with this. I'm not Involved. I didn't mean for you to get hurt like that!"

There was a tense quiet moment as Bisera appeared to consider Audra's words. Finally, she said, "Don't shoot her, guys."

"Are you sure?" the guy who had threatened Audra in the foreign language asked Bisera. "Because you sure sounded like you're angry with her and basically want to see her dead."

"She can't die yet. She still has to explain everything to me."

Audra chanced a look at the two gunmen behind her. They seemed reluctant to drop their weapons, not that she was in any position to tell them to. And that single look had also allowed her to see that these two men were hardened killers, and that they wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger when ordered.

"Justin, Nicolai, you heard Bisera," a cool female voice said. "Put down your weapons."

WORLD CUP 76 QUALIFIERS: ABANHFLEFT VS BANIJA

RIUWIEE, ABANHFLEFT - Abanhfleft won their opening qualification match for World Cup 76 at the expense of a resolute but ultimately unlucky Banija.

Chelsea Stuart opened the scoring with an excellently taken free kick from just the edge of the penalty area, which she sent just past the fingertips of the Banijan keeper and on the right side of the post.

But Banija managed to equalize just a minute before the end of the first half when Isaac Georgiadis pounced on the ball after Victoria Carter had parried away a Saa Okoro attempt.

Abraham Akampurira then gave the visitors a surprise lead over the hosts as he turned in Kiggwe Mavuto's through-ball, but Tonya Heaton restored parity when she headed in from Cecilia Johnson's corner.

Miriam Hannibal ended up scoring the winning goal just three minutes later when she reacted quickest to Abu Turay fumbling the ball following another corner from Abanhfleft.

Has Abanhfleft's defense improved?
Holly Jonasson shifted to a four-man defensive line in friendlies before the start of the qualification proper, fielding Amanda Warren, Hannibal, Claudine Samaniego, and Heaton as starters for the first time in friendlies against Damukuni and Ethane in order to keep the Lady Revolutionaries from conceding more goals since she came on as manager, but it appeared as if Abanhfleft's old defensive frailties have returned with a vengeance in the game against Banija.

Warren and Hannibal should have done better to close down on Georgiadis as he latched onto the ball after Carter had parried it away but there was no denying that Akampurira had Samaniego beat for pace when the Banijan midfielder raced clear to rifle the ball into the lower right corner.

But in the moments that Abanhfleft weren't conceding, the new defensive line did their job very well, chasing after loose balls, covering for each other when one of them moved forward with the offense, and basically operating like a well-oiled and practiced machine; Heaton's touchline defensive header in the minute just before Akampurira's goal made sure that Abanhfleft wouldn't have a higher mountain to climb when the Kitara Athletic man scored later.

Set pieces prove key to Lady Revolutionaries victory
Abanhfleft have created a reputation for relentless attacking that has created lots of goals from open play, but tonight, it was from set pieces that the Lady Revolutionaries would end up getting the three points over the Lions.

Stuart's free kick at the edge of the box at just the fifth minute was a thing of beauty in and of itself as she sent the ball past the defensive wall and through the tight gap in between Abu Turay's glove and the left post.

And Hannibal displayed striker-like composure in front of goal as she swept the ball past the fumbling Turay, who had dropped it in a rare moment of distraction.

Abanhfleft women's team manager Holly Jonasson: "We could have defended better, and conceding those two goals was honestly based on some stupid mistakes from us, but in the end, we won, and that's that. Three points is three points, as they say, and I'm very glad that we got it.

"The team showed great resiliency when they battled from 2-1 down to win this game 3-2. To be perfectly honest, I would have preferred a 3-0 victory, many goals and a clean sheet for us, but that's the way the world works. You work with what you're given. And we've been given 3 goals for our first game. That's a good sign. But we will have to work on scoring from open play. We can't always rely on set pieces."

Gregoryisgodistan with disappointing start

The Foot Slaves of Gregoryisgodistan got off to a disappointing start yesterday, drawing 0-0 with West East Timor, a virtually unknown and incapable nation. It was an embarrassing result that had Lord Almighty Gregory fuming. "If this continues, we will have to literally fire people", God Himself told the press. "We will literally fire them and we will execute them for shaming the nation. Maybe it will just be the coach, maybe it will be the entire team. You won't know until it happens, which hopefully it doesn't. Because hopefully we go 11-0 the rest of the way and qualify for the World Cup. Hopefully. It had better happen, or heads will roll. Literally. So make it happen, people. Let's qualify."

In their next match, Gregoryisgodistan will travel to the heathens of Eastfield Lodge. Eastfield Lodge, like all opponents, are heathens who fail to accept Lord Almighty Gregory as their Lord and Master. We shall hopefully win that match, and if not, people will pay dearly for it, starting with Eastfield Lodge, based on this exclusive report from Lord Almighty Gregory.

"We will beat Eastfield Lodge or we will crush all their fans. Enemy Crusher Fatty Footy will do his duty. And then we will nuke them into oblivion. Oh yeah, we'll nuke them. We'll nuke the whole wide world. This is not a lie. And that is not a Suspiciously Specific Denial. Besides, dear Eastfield Lodge, do you really want to take that chance that we will destroy the entire Multiverse? Or do you want to lose? Well, it doesn't matter, because you're losing whether you want to or not. Oh yes, you are. We will destroy you on the field, metaphorically speaking. Or perhaps literally. You won't know until it happens. You'll just have to wait for us to beat you, in some meaning of the word, and then you'll see what happens. But one way or the other, we are winning, and we are destroying you in some sense of the word.

"Now, I must talk about other matters. I would like to congratulate our glorious ally of Sameba for their recent attacks on the wicked, heathen nation of Eura. The Samebans bravely and nobly carried out mass attacks on Eura. Although this is somewhat old news, this is the first chance I have had to address it. Should the Samebans desire our assistance in destroying nosy old Eura, we will be happy to provide it. Whether it is a nuclear attack, human blitzkrieg, or something else, we will take care of whatever they want, to wipe Eura off the map. Eura will be destroyed! All hail Sameba! Death to Eura!

"Yes, folks, Eura will soon meet the same fate Xylocarpstan is about to meet, at least if Sameba wants us to. Sameba is our ally and we will assist them if they desire it. For now, let us just sing songs of praise to Sameba for their glorious attacks on the Euran idiots. Eura is one of the worst nations in the world, oh yes, they're absolutely the worst. We're the best, but Sameba is pretty close. We will help them destroy Eura! It's happening! Eura is going to be gone!

"And Dumpy O'Rumpy, evil Wee-publican, you're going to be next too! We will assassinate you someday, we will disable the cBots, and we will liberate your country from your reign of terror! You are a horrible person with horrible hair and a mail-order bride for a wife, and you are a horse's rump! We will save the Free Republics and east Saintland from your evil, and hopefully Petrus will let us take out "King" Andreas while we're at it. That would be awesome. But for now, let's get ready to nuke the xylocarps and let's beat Eastfield Lodge! I am the Lord Your God! Surrender now or prepare to fight! I'm God, that's right!"
Gregoryisgodistan, population 75,000,000. All citizens are required to worship Lord Almighty Gregory, our head of state, as a deity.

OISINISTANI NEWS

Blue Eagles start off campaign with 1-1 draw

The Oisinistani international football team started off life in their second-ever World Cup with a 1-1 draw against a much-favoured Kandorith side, who were expected to win by most punters, analysists and managers. Kandorith, who were drawn in Pot 2, lined up 4-4-2 against Oisinistan, while Oisinistan lined up in a 4-3-3 formation.

The game started off well, with Oisinistani goalkeeper Kane Morton pulling off some fantastic saves, and Jake Pollock nearly scoring in the 14th minute, but being stopped by an excellent block by the Kandorith defence.

In the 26th minute, however, Oisinistani fans groaned as Kandorith's star striker dribbled easily past Killian Yussuf to put a blasting shot into the back of the Oisinistani net.

Oisinistan had many chances to make it equal before the first half ended, and were very nearly gifted a goal through the Kandorith defense's lapse in concentration, but the first half finished with the score 1-0 to Kandorith.

Within 4 minutes of the start of the first half, Kandorith were gifted a controversial penalty, after a Kandorith midfielder was taken down by Mike Sallins in the Kandorith penalty area, but the Kandorith penalty taker failed to convert it, instead sending it over the bar into Row Z, as Oisinistani fans breathed a sigh of relief

In the 65th minute, Moki Smith received a high ball from goalkeeper Kane Morton, and passed this down to Bryan Oliver, who dribbled into the box and took a shot, which cannoned off the right crossbar, but Jake Pollock smashed it home, as Oisinistani fans cheered and screamed with delight.

Oisinistan shut up shop for the rest of that match, taking debutant Khalifa Cisse and Rex Lee off in the 75th minute, to bring on Jeremy Byrne and Inaki Sheridan, in an attempt to keep the score at 1-1. This proved successful, and Oisinistan went home with a 1-1 result in the bag, delighting Oisinistani fans.

Oisinistan's next game is against Port Christopher. Most people expect them to be a tough opposition: not as tough as Kandorith were meant to be, but nonetheless tough. If Oisinistan can pull off a result against this team, then they will still be punching far above their weight as a Pot 5 team who just held a Pot 2 team to a draw, against a Pot 3 team.

“And that wraps it up neatly for the opening forty-five minutes, with me I still have Jan-Jaap Klaasen, our loyal pundit and Koninklijke Pellegem manager Stijn Beerens. Gentlemen, please shed some light on the scoreless half we have just witnessed.”

Karel Van Heemst tried to fold his arms as naturally as possible, attempting to keep an interesting stance for what was about to come. Honesty abided him to admit that he couldn’t care less about what that duo would bring up, he never had been into football all that much. But as a steady job in this business was far from an easy acquirement, you had to hold on to what came your way.

“This hasn’t been one for the fans,” Klaasen opened the debate, as could be expected, “with two teams clearly having done their homework. That Valkeniers would opt for just a point on the road, I already expected but Korizland...”

Of course Klaasen would find a way to take a swing at the Veldgouwer manager and the portion of envy displayed was preposterous but that was the kind of entertainment our viewers liked. At least, that was what the analysts believed.

“It is something I’m going to have to agree with,” Beerens spoke, his voice just a pinch too low for his scraggy shoulders, “this was no publicity for World Cup football. It wasn’t exactly lacklustre but it was like a boxing game where both fighters were more glad to be entangled in their arms than to deliver a punch. I don’t know what Van Maar has done to them but this wasn’t the Korizland we admired during the Baptism of Fire.”

We admired? Speak for yourself, Van Heemst thought. Not that he had anything against them, he rather had no awareness at all that they lived in the same multiverse as ours. Luckily the new production assistant had pressed some papers in his hand before pushing him in the make-up chair. He had read page one and then fallen asleep, which surprised Karel as his head was still pounding from last night. Mmm... Last night. As his mind was somewhere else, the duo in the opposite armchair could banter on.

“And we didn’t deliver sufficiently in reply.”
“Sufficiently? Nothing, you’ll mean! In terms of delivery, our package never even left the post office!”
“Who’s to blame then, the mailman or the office clerk?” Beerens replied cheekily, setting up the scene for Klaasen.
“The manager, of course!”

Yeah, last night, Van Heemst looked back at it. Someone had taken him to a new bar – although that word far from sufficed to cover the content. Located in what seemed to be a rather modest mansion just out of town, a gentle café at the ground floor had been filled with arty people drinking ten quid drinks. But it was only when you went underground, literally, that it opened up. If you passed the VIP barrier, room after room opened up with extravagant dancing, pounding music and almost trivial drug abuse. Van Heemst recalled how and when he got in, but not when he got out. But he did make friends with one of the bouncers, so they surely would let him back in. Maybe he should take that new production assistant with him. A bit of reward never hurts your working ants, Karel firmly believed – especially if they looked as smoking hot as her. Look at her, waving, so gentle of her... Wait, waving? Her voice suddenly got in his ear.

“The footage is ready to roll, we need it now or there’s no time left!”

“So, gentlemen, let us move on to what we’ve seen as the managers didn’t shake up things, it depended on the stars. And they’ve had a difficult opening half, right?”
“Yes, but for different reasons,” Klaasen explained.

Van Heemst actually disliked Klaasen and his all-knowing attitude a lot, but it was a public secret that he and the station manager were good chums, so the host cackled along with his guest.

“Here’s probably the best chance of the half, can you walk us through it, Stijn?”
“Certainly. It all starts on our right wing with Snoeks losing the aerial duel – you could blame him but I’ld rather point out that whoever tries passing long on a guy little over five feet, doesn’t get it. Either way, quick build-up through the centre from Korizland and then it happened. For the first time in half an hour, Greg Eason got away from Wittouck and brings out the hammer. Well done by Vandermarliere who got enough of a touch to clip it off the post, that could have given us a difficult hill to climb. Especially on the road.”
“A blatant fault of ours?”
“You can’t be negative on what Sven Wittouck showed us before the break and yeah... It’s always the chicken-or-egg situation. Did Eason just position himself brilliantly or was the defender to blame?”

Oh, no, not another one of those, Van Heemst moaned internally, managing to keep his toothpaste ad smile in check, as the two did their best to entangle an impossible Gordian knot.

“I hear the players are already in the hallway for the second half but let’s get to our team first,” Van Heemst cut them short.
“Well, there isn’t much to show, is there?”

Old boys club laughing.

“Let us face it, Gert Stalhof hasn’t delivered. Hardly a chance, no offensive pass that lead us somewhere, ...”
“I believe this comes a bit too early for him and...” Stijn tried to be diplomatic.
“A bit? Come on, what was Johan Valkeniers thinking! He played, what, half a game properly in the competition and now Stalhof has to save the national team. Look, he had a lot of talent, more than anyone else ever but... It’s all been a while, hasn’t it?”
“Time for a new face?” Van Heemst posed as he glanced whether the kick-off wasn’t around the corner.
“Certainly. Options are abundant, not? The passing of Becu, the power of Liesmonts or the cunning infiltrations of Scheepers...”
“Everything that isn’t the apathy of Stalhof,” Jan-Jaap Klaasen grinned.

“What a second half!” Van Heemst acclaimed, “Veldgouwen turns the table with three goals! And with Gert Stalhof at center stage, I must say, an assisting pass on Van Baekel, vital in the counter attack for the one of Masschelin and topping it off on a free kick.”

A slight moment of silence.

“Well,” Klaasen spoke, “I’ve always believed in him.”

Breakers drop Opening Match of WC76 1-2.

Kaboomlandia came out in an unseen of and undead of 1-8-1 Formation that suffocated The Tidal Wakes attack for virtually the entire match as was evident in the 2 S.O.G. the Breakers had.
The Phoenix capitalized early in the ‘3 after a penalty kick was awarded to Rene Allard, Andy Thrower, was clearly frustrated by the lack of gameplan for the 1-8-1.

The strike from Allard was buried into the left corner of the net, the small hesitation in the run up froze Larger, which was uncharacteristic of the veteran Keeper and team captain.
Another free kick resulted in Kaboomlandia’s 2nd goal of the match, this one coming right before the HT whistle, ’43. Going into the half down 0-2 head coach Greg Hopkins was asked about the team performance...

“What performance, can’t move the ball, can’t defend, hell I can’t even coach these guys up, were losing on every aspect of this match and it all falls on me for not having the lads ready to go, and prepared to even face an 1-8-1.”

The start of the 2nd half saw much of the same issues for the Breakers as they struggled against the 1-8-1 but did manage a few more confidence building runs.
In the ’82 a break finally fell their way with the deflection off the defender’s foot, set up Brandon Baylor from the left, delivering a solid strike, finally putting The Tidal Wake on the board on their World Cup 76 campaign.

Up next The Tidal Wake will face HUElavia who is coming off their bye.

Growing Up a Rebel (Part Five)

It was the day he had to visit the hospital. It had an element of risk, and he knew it. This operation had to be strictly undercover, because of the rules limiting care for those people from The Great Pi, who were in effect slaves, but with some freedom, such as their own home, although these were closely monitored. Beef was extremely nervous, and knew that it was going to be a tough time for him today. He was going to see his wife for the last time, and see the birth of the baby that had been growing inside of Apple for the past 9 months, under secret observance in the hospital. He knew it wasn't going to be pretty, with limited resources, and that the baby may not survive, but at this stage, before the operation had even begun, he didn't want to contemplate the fact.

He arrived at the back alleyway of the hospital, which was dark and empty apart from the rubbish bins which lined the right hand side. The floor was soggy from the rain a few weeks ago, as well as the leaking pipe that ran along the wall to the left, with no real way of the dank alleyway drying out, hidden from the sun. A pie was sleeping behind one of the bins, hidden from site, possessing only a tin foil base, which he slept in to try to keep warm, although it wasn't that effective.

There was a rustling behind one of the many bins on the right, and one of the bins creaked as it was moved slightly. Beef stopped. He turned around, but saw nothing. He continued to walk to the back door, a dim grey rectangle standing at the end of the rather long alleyway, which seemed to be purposed more to be a fire exit than an actual door. Without warning, a pie jumped out in front of him from above, landing just in front of him and stopping him in his tracks. The pie was young, but not a kid. He was bulky built, quite large and strong, but seemed to not have any official tag from the government, suggesting he was either unregistered, or a part of the government.

''Hello Beef, we've heard about you.'' the pie said. Beef looked around nervously. He wondered if the government of the Republic had been following him, or not. How had he been caught? Who was this? ''You probably don't know who I am.'' He spoke almost in a whisper, as if he was trying to keep a secret. ''I'm Steak N' Kidney. Though that probably doesn't help you.''

''What do you want with me?'' Beef stammered, scared witless by the intrusion of this pie, whom he had no idea existed, or even who they were, scared that they held a position in the government and had found out about the baby, waiting until the actual day, when hopes were high, to ruin the plan to save the baby, and for him to see his wife for the very last time. ''Oh, nothing really. Just your help.'' Steak chuckled. ''I want you to get something for me.''

Beef looked bewildered. He had no idea who this pie was, and what position he held in anything, just that the pie knew he was going to be here, and that he wanted something done from him. ''I need you to get a pie out of the hospital for me. Her name is Tarta de Santiago.'' Beef was dumbfounded and shocked. His jaw dropped. From what he understood, this random pie called Steak wanted him to risk his life and his baby to save someone from the hospital who he didn't know, and couldn't really care about. ''Why?'' he asked. He wanted to know why he should be risking his life for this girl.

''She's important for both of us.'' the mysterious pie whispered. He put a knife against the back of Beef. ''She's important to me, because I love her, and she's important to you, because your life depends on her getting out of this hospital safely.''

''I.. I'll g-get her o-out.'' Beef whimpered, water droplets forming in his eyes. He was scared, for himself, for his baby, for his wife, and for the world that existed, the state of affairs that existed in The Pie Republic. ''Go on then...'' Steak commanded, shoving him towards the back door, the knife blade still pressed against his back. Beef opened the door, stepped inside, and shut it again.

He found himself in a room bustling with people. The walls were painted white, with paintings from not-so famous artists dotted around on the walls to try to liven up the place, which seemed more like a prison than a hospital. Men wearing white lab coats were rushing around, either reams and reams of paperwork in their hands, or pushing a bed containing a pie, which needed to be rushed in, for an emergency situation, from the ambulance depot that sat over to the right. Beef found himself in the corner of the large lobby, the quietest part. He knew where he had to get to, but he couldn't go through the crowds. He had his care, and wasn't allowed back into the hospital again by the government's orders, so he had to sneak through.

There was a back-stairs just to his right, which he opted to take. He was relying on the map, which was outdated, that he was given by the doctor, Mr. Ham, that had visited him not too long ago, which showed where all the cameras were, and it said there were none on the staircase. He ran up the stairs, taking two at a time, desperate to get to his wife and soon-to-be kid, whom were near the top floor. The staircase he took led him to a part of the hospital which he hadn't been to before. ''No worries'' he thought to himself. ''I'll have to use the ventilation to get there.''

He found the ventilation shaft in this quiet corridor, in a section which he didn't think held any cameras. The area was restricted according to the signs, and was called 'The Experimental Area', which he assumed meant this was where they tested new drugs. He didn't want to be long in this area. Something about it freaked him out. He unscrewed the ventilation shaft grille which covered the front of the shaft, and hopped in, pulling up the grille behind him and loosely attaching it with some string he had in his pocket, so as to make it easy to get back through again on the way out, but to also not arouse suspicions that a pie was in the ventilation shafts. Any attention would be bad for him, and if he got caught, he would likely be executed. He crawled through the metal ventilation shafts, trying to make as little noise as possible, but some metal clanging was inevitable, which Beef prayed that no one noticed.

The shaft led to another corridor, this one scarcely lit. He shoved on the metal grille covering the shaft, the metal hitting the floor with a much louder bang than he had hoped. Beef winced, hoping no one had noticed the racket. He jumped out of the shaft. The walls of the corridor were grimy and greasy. The corridor evidently hadn't been cleaned in years, with cobwebs lining the ceiling, and rats scurrying around on the floor. Beef was wary, as he couldn't see either end of the corridor - something could be hiding there.

He heard a metal clanging of what he assumed was a door. Voices. He moved to the side of the corridor to try to stay hidden as a figure emerged from the darkness. There was nowhere else to hide. As the figure emerged: ''Nice to see you Beef. I'm Mr. Ham. This way please.'' Beef followed him to a dimly lit room. Inside was a bed, which his wife lay on, currently unconcious, with some hope of waking for a short while during labour, if the conditions were right. There was a machine which was keeping her alive to the right of the bed, and a heart monitor, all of which had been smuggled into these unused back rooms from the hospital after Apple had her preliminary 3 months treatment, when it was ordered that she had to leave the hospital, whether she was conscious or not.

The hygiene was awful in the room. It was dingy, damp and cold. There was no way of sterilising the instruments, so it was just a hope that nothing was infected with a deadly virus or bacterial strain which would kill both Apple and the baby, even though Apple was practically almost dead anyway. ''This place is horrible.'' Beef cried out, feeling agony for his wife.

''I know.'' Mr. Ham said sympathetically. ''It's the best we have without getting caught though.'' As he was saying this, a nurse walked into the room. ''Who's this?'' Beef demanded to know. He was scared that someone had found out, that it was all over for the four of them. Mr. Ham comforted Beef. ''No worried. This is a friend.'' Beef relaxed after Mr. Ham said that. He felt comfortable with Mr. Ham, like he could trust him. ''She's waking up. Go say hello.'' the nurse exclaimed, surprised.

Beef walked over to his wife, who was lying on the bed, pale and frail. He stroked Apple's cheek, tears of joy flowing down his face being able to see his wife one last time. Apple's eyes flickered open. ''Beef...'' she whispered coarsely, unable to get much more out. ''Ssh... It's okay. You're gonna have a baby.'' A smile appeared on her face. ''Can we call it... Curry N' Chicken?'' she asked.

''Of course. We'll call it Curry N' Chicken.'' Beef exclaimed, looking at his wife with joy. ''He'll be our saviour, our hero.''

TAKE OUT - SPONSORED BY PUKKA PIES (Newspaper Edition)

The Great Pi kick off their World Cup qualification programme with a strong draw against Dainer.

It was said before the national team came to the World Cup that the first game could set the tone for the rest of the campaign. While the team that they were playing in Dainer wasn't the number one seed in the group - they were in fact seeded fourth in what is an incredulously tough group for the nation's first WC, they were still a strong team to contend with, which the national team would struggle with this early in the campaign. If the team had come out of the first game against Dainer with a loss, that would have spelled disaster for the national team this World Cup, with three other really challenging teams in San Llera, The Sarian and number 1 team in the world, the Unified Sunrise Islands.

However, the team have taken away an impressive draw away from home, in what was a valiant defensive effort from the pies, who managed to keep strong no matter whatever Dainer threw at them.

While the strikers weren't able to really get any headway against a determined Dainer defensive lineup, with Strawberry Rhubarb, Shepherd's Pie and Green Grape valiant efforts unable to find the goal needed, restricted by defence, the team overall was very fluent and strong, resilient in not letting Dainer get any of their 22 shots in the goal.

Part of this strong defensive effort in what isn't really a defence inclined team was down to the dig in mentality that the team began to adopt after the first half an hour, with no avail in their attacking. But the root cause of this performance lies deeper in the team, amongst everyone. Each and every pie was determined to see a result for the team out the end of this game, and were dedicated to not letting The Great Pi drop a point. This was seen in everyone pitching in defensively - even the strikers spent much of their time in defence, which is not their usual position.

Much can still be pinned down to the back line of three though. Fish N' Herb, Peach N' Pineapple and Chicken Tikka formed a solid, almost impenetrable back wall in this game against Dainer, disallowing efforts to pass through the defence, and constantly tricking the opposition using the offside trap. The smells of the back-line pies probably also helped a bit in distracting their players from shooting on goal as they tried to hold in the urge to eat the team they were playing against.

One factor in this still remains though, and that is the valiant effort of the goalkeeper, Beef N' Veggie. Beef put in the performance of his lifetime in this game. You could see in his eyes he wanted something out of this game, and was determined to not allow a single goal in. His perseverance, resilience and strength in his role led to not a single shot from the Dainerites find the back of the net, even though they had 22 shots, of which 13 were on target. 13 saves is pretty impressive, and I assure you, some of Beef's saves were very impressive.

While the team did perform strongly in this game to manage a draw, the fact it was only a draw does not bode well at all for chances for The Great Pi in this World Cup Qualification. Dainer being only the fourth seed in this group makes them one of the much easier teams to beat, and the fact that The Bakes Pies only managed a draw does leave questions as to what the team will be like against the more dominant opposition. The biggest challenge definitely comes in the Unified Sunrise Islands though, who are very clearly currently the top ranked team in the world by a fair margin. Beating or even drawing against them even at home would be an impressive feat for the pies.

However, some consolation is offered in the fact that this is an away game, so it was natural that the team would not do so well. If this was at home, the team may have performed slightly better with the fans behind them, rather than the opposition team, so a draw away on the first match day for a lowly ranked team is fairly impressive. While the team may not perform so well away from home, there is still hope for The Great Pi that the performances in their own home stadium will make up for the shortfall away from home, but this is far from guaranteed.

Hello everybody. This is Jeremiah Varane-Jones, your friendly neighbourhood writer whose focus lies on commentating and reviewing some of the best, mediocre and worst shows out there. For the past 3 months, I've been working on the television review guide of award-winning show Varsity, as have recommended by many of you. It was a total success, with around 200 pages dedicated to this episode guide. But before we actually go into the show, let's get like a better sense of what we're about to get before hop into episode-by-episode watch-and-review time!

What is Varsity?

Varsity is a Quebecois drama television series about an university fencing team in the fictional city of Queenstown, Frontenac. It was developed by Christopher Tsu-Ahn and executive produced by Jean-Christophe Rashford, Gonzalo Mourinho, Emile-Sebastien Aubin, Lane Ward and Dong Heon Woo, based on the unreleased 2009 memoir, Dreamy Days and French Classes, by Philippe Ahn, legendary Quebecois fencing coach who's also the uncle of Christopher. The series' primary setting, Queenstown, Frontenac, is a close-knit college town of 105,000 people in southeastern Frontenac. Kirkenes University Fencing team coach and professor Antoine Kim (Yoo Seok Park), assistant Dana Brunner (Sandra Aski), and his initial group of athletes, Felix Yang (Georges Woo), Jordan Salaberry (Moises-Garth Shirkanazadeh) and Marianne Dalembert (Eloise Hardy). The show uses the small-town, collegiate backdrop, to address many issues facing Quebecois culture including family values, athletics funding distribution, academic issues, drugs (especially cannabis and cigarette use), alcoholism, mental health, love and administration.

Produced by Cheonghae Productions, Varsity premiered on October 18, 2018, and aired for six seasons on QBC. While never being popular and often suffering risks of cancellation due to low ratings, it was a critical success, praised for its dynamic character and plot development and portrayal of college life and varsity athletics. The show appeared on many top tv shows of the year lists and won two Polaris Prizes, 2 Normies and several Baeksang Awards. At the 2024 Baeksang Awards, Yoo Seok Park and Erin McConkey scored nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor and Supporting Actress in a Drama series, while Christopher Ahn won the award for Outstanding Writing for a Drama series. The series ended its run on April 20, 2024 after 6 seasons.

Inspiration

Varsity was inspired by Philippe Han Soo Ahn's memoir Dreamy Days and French Classes (2008, unreleased) and childhood stories told by Christopher Ahn's grandparents and relatives. The book, which explores the life of the hall of fame coach, was a vivid, detailed recollection of his memories back in the days. The people featured were not named, to keep in line with the realism and memories. While there has been many attempts in turning the memoir into a film or a miniseries, none was approved by Ahn, causing any project with it to be held off until Varsity.

Christopher Tsu-Ahn
Filmmaker Christopher Tsu-Ahn, who directed River's 69, developed the series, including the entirety of its pilot episode. Once the movie was completed, Tsu-Ahn began to explore adapting his uncle's stories for television. Tsu-Ahn said that he wanted to stay true to most themes present in the memoir and address them, while keeping in line with the current realities. Creating a TV series, the one where there'd be more screentime to be devoted towards, allowed him to develop these characters and address the elements in depth.

After many discussions with those around him, including the coach himself, he decided to set the series in a fictional city of Queenstown, Frontenac, with many comparables to Cornwall, where the "Northern Comet" went to his undergraduate studies. Tsu-Ahn carried many elements from the memoir to the series, which was closely related to the memoir. The athletics team was given the name Domhnalls. He casted Sandra Aski as Dana Brunner, the quiet, loyal assistant to Head Coach Antoine Kim and Moises-Garth Shirkanazadeh as Jordan Salaberry, passionate sabreur with many life struggles.

Production

Filming for the show's pilot episode began in April 20, 2018, in Cornwall, Frontenac. Tsu-Ahn stated that his uncle required filming the pilot and eventually the show in eastern Frontenac as one of the conditions in approving the project. In cases ideal venues may not be available, other places in Gaspecie, Outaouais and Acadie provinces (both with significance and heritage for Ahn house) were approved for use. The series features many mentions and homages to its Ontarian-Frontenacois heritage. In the pilot, Tsu-Ahn featured former Queen's Gaels head coach William Yi as guest coach and had many compare the Domhnalls' coach Antoine Kim to the likes of William Yi. The pilot mentioned its surrounding areas in its scenes and buildings, as have described by the students. Practice and competition scenes were filmed at Queen's University's fencing gym, Competition Hall, Montreal, and Pacific Northwest Arena, Prince Eric. Some of the scenes were filmed in Moncton and Bathurst.

While working on production Tsu-Ahn was inspired by the modern trends of university students, during his observation period, as well as his own college days back in Queen's with his brother Felix, future wife Adelina Chang and old friend Marcel Cody-Yi. For example, Ellie Rossi, the fictional character who battles cancer in her senior year as women's team captain, was inspired by his friend. Late Ally Newton, the Epeeist on her junior year, was diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer 2 weeks into the fall semester. Tsu-Ahn was around in her hospitalisation and last months; he was horribly affected by what had happened, causing then-junior to take 2 years off fencing before coming back while a master's student at University of Halifax. Tsu-Ahn set up a similar storyline in the pilot and first 2 seasons thereafter to commemorate her.

Filming and Performances

All six seasons of Varsity were filmed in Cornwall, with various other locations being used for some episodes. Shortly before starting the filming, the producers signed an agreement with the province of Frontenac to keep the show until the end, as long as the rebates were paid. This guaranteed the consistency of settings in the series.

Varsity is unusual for using actual locations rather than sets and stage, a common practice in the industry. This, in combination to using many locals and those working in the very sport, gives the series an unique, original feel and look.
The colours, facilities, colours and gaelic logos of the Queen's University Gaels were used as the setting and creative inspiration for the Kirkenes University Domhnalls. Producers shot various footages of fencing bouts and used them as game footage and analysis pieces in the series. True North Sports broadcasters Michel-Henri Rouganne and Woo Young Jang provided commentaries for competition commentaries, especially in the nationals and QFIE competitions. The show features the fictional 'Salle Ciomyk-Bede', named for Sergei Ciomyk-Bede, the head coach of Cornwall CVI Blues' fencing team and local teacher.

Some scenes were filmed outside of Cornwall. On 9th of June, 2019, scenes were filmed at Moncton, which was to portray the coach Kim's homecoming to his family back in the East Coast. An episode from the final day of Jordan's sophomore year was filmed in the Kingston area, at Union Station, W Kingston and Kingston Malton International Airport. Some scenes at fictional Soongookseonyeol College were filmed at College Jean-de-Brebeuf at Outremont, Montreal.

Performance

The producers used a documentary-style filming technique, in which entire scenes were taken in one take, rather than piecing different scenes together. By doing so, the producers attempted to make filming procedure and actors' performances more organic and flowing.

While filming, the actors were given the maximum leeway possible on show by getting to make their decisions on how to deliver their lines and block their scenes. They also got their leeway and also the permission to change as long as it matched the plot points and the greater scheme of things. Camera operators were also instructed and trained to follow the actors and keep their cameras moving, to provide more fluid process and footage. Some scenes, especially those of fencers' bouts, had to be done with 6 cameras focused on them multiple times, to meet the artistic satisfaction.

Working in this style, an interesting experiment nonetheless, significantly influenced everyone involved with the production. Production advisor Laurence Dietsche-Parker said: "This was certainly not a typical way of doing things, and boy they succeeded in doing it. Doing well at something unconventional....very good job done by the filmmakers." Series star Yoo Seok Park agreed, saying : "Absolutely. This was something that certainly changed my views on filmmaking and how I should approach things from this point. It helped me become a more developed actor for sure."

Cast and Characters

As the show about the community of Kirkenes University, Varsity has an ensemble cast. The show features the Domhnalls' Head Coach Antoine Kim (Yoo Seok Park), who strives to balance his work, family, status in a sometimes-confrontational community, and his personal ambitions. He landed in Queenstown a 4-time championship winning coach from Moncton and is expected to contend year-after-year basis.

Outsdide of the Kim family the series explores the stories of the Kirkenes University fencers and those around them. In the pilot, the long-touted foilist and women's team captain Ellie Rossi (Juliette Theriault) falls unconscious during a practice and is diagnosed with cancer that may or not end her competitive career, but could also risk her life. She faces the long road to recovery as a patient on the other side of strengths, and watches from sidelines as a playing coach. After long, gradual recovery, she recovers and deals with her other worlds. Dana Brunner (Sandra Aski), assistant to Kim, helps Ellie to recover and make transition to coaching career while trying her best to keep the dysfunctional team in control and check.

Dominic Bergeron as Nicolas Amaroso-Veteto

With Rossi hospitalised, the sophomore Marianne Dalembert (Eloise Hardy), talented but troubled Epeeist, becomes the face of the women's team. Over the course of the work viewers learn that her father's paralysis on construction site has left her take care of her 2 siblings and long-ill mother, causing the sophomore to be under constant pressure to succeed. Dalembert talks little, opting rather to spend time with Nicolas Amoroso-Veteto (Dominic Bergeron), the team armourer who's also infamous for being a chainsmoker (OOC note: Chainsmoking is a very common thing in Quebec, though not even close to consuming marijuana because Quebecois smoke weed everyday).

Rookies Felix Yang (Georges Woo) and Jordan Salaberry (Moises-Garth Shirkanazadeh) struggle with their personal lives, as the inexperienced and the star both deal with trust issues, consistency and alcoholism. Their good friend Andres Salgado (Gabriel Perez-Moisan), one of few sane voices around them, serves as their support. Broken but not done, Felix and Jordan get involved with their relationships and develop their potential. Frederic Albano-Holmes (Jean-Christophe Bradford-Johnston) stars as the team's friend and supporter who goes through long-distance relationship and trips with grey areas.

With that being said

It's time for us to go and watch the show. Feel free to bring this guide with you and compare it as you watch. Make sure to read the episode reviews one at the time, to provide no spoilers and better understanding of the series.

Valanora: A Modern History
Chapter 5: Growth of a Nation

Villages started to dot all across the continent, Arrosia was becoming a fully settled region within the world, and some villages began to turn into cities where entertainment, religion, and culture thrived. The Outer Kingdom developed into a more conflict driven society, as they had to defend the borders of the lands against raiders, both from other villages as well as outside forces that had heard the rumors of an elven nation forming. The villages did not see themselves as a single unit though, what had once been a group of friends and family members had splintered and that had resulted in rivalries and mistrust among some. That mistrust would only further splinter the relations between the villages, as Elune looked on with deep concern about the growing developments.

In response to growing amount of raids, certain villages began erecting strong defenses and expanding their holdings to more strategic locations in order to repel these disturbances to the peace of their settlements. The villages of Longview and Stormguard in particular took these measures, with Longview settling their walls between two tall peaks, including the iconic Mount Paron, in the Spine of Arrosia mountain chain, as the village was located inside a fertile valley inside the mountain chain, with a tributary to the river Ariela. Stormguard was located at the end of mountain chain, with Mount Humar on its eastern border and the river Ariela on its western border, creating natural borders and protection for the settlement. Stormguard's defenses soon became the talk of the land, as their walls and natural borders made them the gatekeepers to the rest of the elven lands, as they repelled outside forces easily.

However even Stormguard could not hold the entirety of the forces that began to press upon the borders of the elves, as human raiders began to show up in increasing frequency and larger quantities of troops. Having learned from their predecessors, the invaders began to bypass Stormguard completely and head further north and west before launching their raiders into the villages. Caught unaware, Gladerial and the surrounding villages were sacked repeatedly until the leaders of the city reached out to the other cities and villages for aid. A summit was held in Therathor, just north of the Inner Kingdom, where leaders from across all of elven lands in Arrosia came to meet. What was meant to strike a pact for support of troops during raids began to take on a larger scope.

After a month of debating and making various agreements that were voted down, the leaders came to an agreement that would become known as the Elven Security Alliance. In this treaty, each city agreed to pledge support of their troops to one another should they come under assault from outside forces and they agreed to end the raids against one another. Gladerial was recognized as the seat of government, as each settlement with more than a thousand inhabitants was allowed to send a representative to this loose confederation's government to represent them. In addition to the military support and agreement of a government entity, the leaders also agreed to greater trade relations, easing the burdens that some of the villages had been suffering that had lead to the raids in the first place. Those from Mar Sara, Rinaldi, and Quel'Thalas were upset that the capital of this government was so far north, setting up for conflict down the road.

THE BRINEMOUTH HERALD
HARD-FOUGHT DRAW AS CORMORANTS AND MARAUDERS SHARPEN THEIR SWORDS
by Patricia Steinbren

Nephara don't usually play friendlies, but Reinhard Shale had specially requested this one from the NFA, desiring to test his players against top-quality opposition. Well, he got his wish, as the Marauders battled their way to share the spoils in the Farham Arena.

Shale took what was almost his strongest possible lineup, with the exception of handing a first cap to 21-year old Crisisbless leftback Sieglinde Lohengrin. Valanora, by contrast, took a more rotated side to blood some of their depth. The first half saw Nephara take the advantage through a textbook move, as Penumbra Amokachi dashed into the box to get ahold of Ashdown's pass, feinted this way and that before rolling the ball into the path of Adnan Szalai, who made no mistake.

Three changes were made at half-time, with debutants Konrad Gosforth and Dragan Stavanger winning first caps and impressing - no doubt Shale will be pleased that it was Lohengrin who set up her fellow debutant with a nicely-floated boss into the area. There was a moment of uncertainty and Stavanger pounced, leaping mightily and heading the ball in.

What Shale will not be pleased with was the last half-hour, in which the Cormorants uncharacteristically took their foot off the gas. Two minutes after Stavanger's goal, the Marauders pulled one back before an injury-time equaliser at Hargrave's near post gave food for thought about the goalkeeper position.

Shale stuck to his guns at the press conference, however. "The result doesn't matter, it was a friendly," he said. "That said, I'm pleased with the first hour, and pleased with how the new lads performed. I'll just have faith that in the matches that matter, we won't allow ourselves to drop off in the same fashion."

With a qualifier at home against Henzia to follow, some of the more experienced heads in the friendly group have been sent home. Shale is expected to put forward a young team, and debuts for Hawke, Naeher, Chilmark, Alemane and Tsattalios could all be due.

Postby Brenecia » Mon Oct 03, 2016 3:00 pm

Fiona Sylver could rest easy, for once. The Patriots were heavily-rotated and playing quietly pretty football, with admittedly pliable Hadorian opponents. Even the rotations felt a bit like bringing a gun to a knife-fight, given that 'rotation' involved Ronan Bowditch, the reigning MVP of the Cosumarite league who had chalked up a goal and two assists today, with Balliol and the rightback Tara Hassett scoring on their international debuts. The home crowd was quietly complacent, but it had been in fine voice throughout the first eighty minutes.

This wasn't Brenecia's aesthetic, really. They specialised in terrifying capitulations to weak sides to open qualifying runs at a massive disadvantage - not that Sylver was complaining at this brave new dawn she was being presented with. And she was pleased with how the new blood was faring... and that her manager had taken her advice for once, and kept the side on a leash, told them not to overextend. They might even get a clean sheet out of this for young Aidan Hartigan on his debut. Woodgate had taken a knock in the buildup and, well, why not try out the young lad?

She checked the clock - six more minutes.

Hampton took a neat little pass from Gutierrez and dashed diagonally forward, leaving an off-balance Hourihane to chase. He shot, hard but a little prematurely, and Uffington got himself in the way for the ball to bounce out for a corner. A lot of guys in black and red shuffled into the box, with Vinton Louis set to take it.

Swung it in and... Hartigan ran straight into Uffington, fingertips desperately pawing at the ball but only as far as Danna Stillions, who simply chested it into the net.

It was slapstick, really, and there was even scattered laughter across the stadium. But Fiona Sylver just put her goddamn head in her goddamn hands. Brenecia! She swore to God...
Puppet of Nephara.
