Cabbies now 3-0

The Mulcahey City University football team, better known as the Cabbies, improved to 3-0 and is now ranked 2nd in the division of independents and 2nd overall.

The game began well enough with a quick touchdown and field goal combo, between which SHCAX turned the ball over on downs. Just a quarter gone in the game and already 10-0 against a team that had yet to score this season. Quarterback Stuart Frain continued to connect with everyone that he passed the ball to in the second quarter, and there came another touchdown from a 26 yard pass with subsequent 27 yard run by Kent Jillson. Frain was 17/18 in the first half with 2 touchdowns and no interceptions.

The second half of the game became a Cabbies field-goalapalooza. Kicker Chase Dentremont nailed all five attempts. The distances were 37, 41, 42, 44 and a spectacular 55 yard kick.

Slack defending by the Cabbies allowed SHCAX a late touchdown, their first score of the season, and head coach Hank Kingsley was overheard to say 'HEY NOW I AM PISSED OFF ABOUT THAT!'.

(ooc: No, they're independent. I went back and check though, and realized I accidentally left them out of the Independent rankings, but I fixed it. Only mistake from what I've seen. Not bad for first time hosting, huh?)

MAYORS WIN AT HOME

Emotional win for the Roost highlighted by James Broome's performance

Story by Jimmy LePage

USC @ the Roost
[/float]

The Mayors finally broke through last night, defeating the University of Blacksburg 9-3 at home. After a long and tragic week, the Mayors came out with more heart and determination than any other Mayor team that this reporter ahs ever seen.

The pregame ceremonies were marked by an emotional moment of silence in memory of those lost in the terror attacks earlier in the week. Every fan in the stadium had donned black, as blackouts are traditional agaisnt Blacksburg (as is both teams wearing home jerseys; the black and orange/grey contrast well). Tonight though every fan had a #90 on some part of them; on their hats, on their shirts, and in their hearts. DE James Broome had lost both of his parents to the terror attacks, and despite his grief, his pain and suffering, he told the head coach that he would continue to play in his parent's memory. As thte team ran out onto the field, missing this time were the BLACK DEATH jolly rogers, instead replaced by flags bearing "NEVER FORGET" and "FREEDOM". Leading the team out was James Broome, and as the Mayors took the field the crowd erupted; Williams-Brice Stadium shook as it never had before as the fans of both teams showed their support for the young Broome.

The game itself was a slugfest. Defense dominated the night, with Blacksburg being held to a 3-0 lead going into the second quarter. The Mayors offense picked up the pace tonight after two sluggish performances, getting into Jeffrey Miller's field goal range twice before the end of the half.

The second half was just as brutal; it was three-and-out over and over for both teams until 5:14 to play in the game. James Broome swept around the end of the line and delivered a crushing blow to QB Jeremy Lane, forcing a fumble that LB David Willis returned it to the Silver Foxes' 29 yardline. The crowd erupted as Broome looked and pointed skyward. Three plays later Jeffrey Miller tacked on another field goal to make the game 9-3 USCR.

The biggest moment of the game came later in the 4th quarter. The Silver Foxes had driven to the Mayors' 14 yard line, needing a touchdown to tie and the PAT to win; and on 4th down with 0:05 remaining in the game James Broome drove past the O-line and sacked Jeremy Lane as the clock hit zero.

The crowd erupted once more, louder than ever before; the Mayors rushed the field, throwing helmets and cups and towels in the air in celebration; and James Broome again pointed skyward, jumping around screaming and celebrating with his teammates after managing to escape from the dogpile.

WSPN got to Broome and were able to interview him; as the cameras lined him up and the reporters closed in, James couldn't hold it in any longer, falling to his knees in tears and in prayer. His teammates consoled him, patting him on the back as the media backed off to give him space. After a moment James got up, composed, and approached the WSPN reporter.

Reporter: "James, it's been an emotional week. How does it feel to come out here and win this game?"
Broome: (still teary eyed) "This means so much to me. I'm so blessed to have such great teammates and great coaches and they mean so much to me. My little brother and sister and I have been together all week and the guys have been so good to them too...I don't know what to say. (Looking up) Mom, Dad, this is for you."

"It's been a tough week, and to come out and win this means more than any words than I can say," said Coach Whitt. "I'm proud of all these kids. They played great tonight."

"It was a tough week," said Coach Brandon Stokley, head coach of the Silver Foxes. "We weren't able to practice a few days and that hurt us. We were fortunate in that none of our players or their families were directly harmed in the attack. USCR just came ready to play tonight; they earned it.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to James Broome. We've got to get ready for next week."

An emotional, storybook ending to an epic game. But this is just one chapter, and we'll have to wait and see how the story continues to unfold.

TOUGH ROAD LOSS FOR MAYORS

Backup Eddie Mitchell's stellar performance not enough to carry The Roost past Dracon Prime Imperial

Story by Jimmy LePage

USC @ the Roost

In Cory Lawson's absence to a concussion Eddie Mitchell put on a display Saturday surpassing any of his previous efforts. After throwing two interceptions in a home loss to Toiletdonia two weeks ago, Mitchell completed 19 of his 20 pass attempts, one for a touchdown, and threw no interceptions. Unfortunately it wasn't enough, as The Roost was outlasted by Dracon Prime Imperial U at King Dremus XX Stadium in King's Crossing. The Mayors were plagued by turnovers and a faltering ground game. The usually steady Marvin Walton had two fumbles that both led to DIU scores, and a muffed punt by David Amos put the Mayors back inside their own ten yard-line, being forced to punt away.

Still, Mitchell managed to connect with Buck Henry on a 12 yard TD reception in the third quarter, and after two Jeffrey Miller FGs the game was in reach, as USCR only trailed 13-17 with 8:43 to play in the 4th. But any hopes of a victory were dashed when Walton fumbled a second time inside DIU territory. The Leather Wings drove the field, kicking a field goal with 2:37 to play. Running their hurry-up offense, Mitchell again seemed poised to make it into the endzone. But on a critical 4th down his pass was deflected by the DIU safety; DIU kneed the ball out to seal the game.

"Eddie played great today," said Coach Whitt. "We just couldn't hold on to the ball. Defense played okay other than a few rough spots. We've gotten away from our normal system of play; I think we need to stick with what we do best."

[float=right]

"Our receivers did a great job of getting open, but they couldn't pull in catches when we needed them to," said O-coordinator Zach Whitt. "The O-line did a great job with protection. Marvin's a veteran, there's no excuse for him to fumble the ball like he did. But we'll work on it, we'll get better."

"We had a few mistakes on defense today," said D-coordinator Joe Nave, "but we're going to correct those mistakes. James [Broome] played a great game today to follow up last week's performance; he got what, two more sacks and a couple of pass deflections? Overall we played decent other than a few errors. We're going to change a few things in practice this week and get ready for next Saturday."

The Mayors are now 0-1 in conference play. If they expect to make the conference championship game they'll have to do some major work.

Top rank achieved!!!
MCU 14 7 7 3 31
JUP 3 0 0 0 3

Our favorites, the Cabbies, have achieved the top ranking overall! JUP proved no match for our Cab Drivers as they were crushed 31-3. And only coach Hank Kingsley's sporting attitude prevended the Cabbies from further running up the score against the hapless JUP team.

Once more, the opening drive immediately yielded a touchdown. And with a second one halfway the first half, it was quite clear that JUP simply wouldn't be able to compete. Though they did manage a 32 yard field goal with seconds left in the opening quarter.

Second quarter didn't see much action apart from a perfect play action driven touchdown run for a 21-3 lead, after which the game turned low key. Except for the start of the third quarter. F1-Insanity kicked off but JUP failed to control the ball somehow and the Cabbies picked up the loose ball and ran it in for a 28-3 lead. After that, the Cabbies clearly spared JUP further embarassment by replacing their entire line-up, it was garbage time after all, and we all know that when it's garbage time, the Brian Griese's get taken out and replaced by the Tom Brady's.

Just one more field goal so it finished 31-3 and the score and subsequent announcement of the #1 overall ranking pleased coach Hank Kingsley immensely. "HEY NOW! We are number one! Say we are top o' the rankings. Let's keep this going shall we?"

RIVALRY GAME IN COLUMBIA

Dakotas, Mayors set to face off Saturday

Story by Jimmy LePage

Two teams. One trophy. Bragging rights for one year. That's right folks, the 70th annual Gold Top Hat is up for grabs as the Tuttle College Dakotas make the long journey to Columbia to play the University of South Carolina at the Roost. The Mayors won the last contest in Redfield 34-24 en route to a 9-3 season. This time around the Dakotas are 2-2 and the Mayors just 1-3, so it's quite obvious who's the favorite.

"We're going to have to get after it if we want to win this one," said Coach Whitt. "We can't expect to win playing the way we have been. Saturday night is going to require us playing the best we've played so far. TC isn't a pushover."

Ed Harris, head coach of the Dakotas, shared the same sentiments. "We've been a little subpar as far as our performance goes this year. We can't just overlook the Roost because they're 1-3. This game is as big as any other we play."

Look for this matchup to be one of the most exciting of the year.

DAKOTAS DOWN MAYORS

Lynch scores last second field goal in front of a shocked Columbia crowd

Story by Jimmy LePage

All Mitch Lynch had to do was make a 46 yard field goal and Tuttle College would have the closest win against Carolina @the Roost since 1976 (the infamous "Offsides game").

As the clock expired Lynch's kick went sailing through the uprights, and the Tuttle sideline exploded with elation. The visitor's section wen't berserk. Coach Harris got a Gatorade bath. And all the Mayors could do was stand in silence and watch.

The Mayors had an advantage going into the fourth quarter, leading 26-17. The Mayors struck first early in the first on two touchdown passes from Eddie Mitchell to Charon Peake and David Outlaw, respectively. One Jeffrey Miller field goal, a Marvin Walton touchdown run, and a Parker Alford safetey later the Mayors led 26-3 in the third quarter. But the Dakotas busted loose, and courtesy of two Mike Trimble TDs the Dakotas were down by only two scores. Then, early in the 4th quarter Ed O'Conner found junior Eric Farrer for a 54 yard TD to close the gap to 2 points. The Mayors got into Tuttle territory on the ensuing drive but were forced to punt; return man Andrew Augspurger returned the punt all the way back to the Roost 22 yard-line. With 4:15 to play TC scored again on a third TD run by Mike Trimble, taking the lead 31-26. But the Mayors drove the length of the field on their next possession, and Eddie Mitchell found David Amos in the back of the endzone to retake the lead 33-31.

With 1:16 left to play Ed Harris got his hurry up team on the field, and six plays later TC got to the Mayors' 29 yard line. After 3 incomplete passes, and just 0:02 reading on the game clock, Harris sent the kicking unit on the field. Mitch Lynch lined up and nailed the kick, giving TC the win, earning payback for last year's loss, and winning the Gold Top Hat Trophy.

"How 'bout them Dakotas, huh!!" said Coach Harris after the game. "These kids earned this. I'm very proud of theses boys, they played like champions today. Mitch is ice cold, and Mike (Trimble) had a great game too, didn't he? and Ed drove us the length of the field on that last drive; we started out slow, but all around we played great the second half. All our boys did."

Coach Whitt had little to say afterwards. "We made some changes in practice this week, and there was definitely a huge difference in comparison to last week for the better. But we just got outplayed; flat out outplayed.

"We're now back in the mentality where we need to focus on finishing games."

So the Mayors have but one win this year, and are currently 0-2 in conference play. Conference championship looks just out of reach.

But for TC the story is slightly different: 1-1 in conference play, and depending on what happens to the top 3 SAC West teams (all 2-0 in conference play) TC could find themselves in the conference chaampionship game. Only time will tell. For now though, its back to the drawing board for Coach Whitt and the Roost. But for Mitch Lynch, Ed Harris, and the Dakotas its time to celebrate before hitting the gridiron again on Monday.

That's okay, as long as you haven't stolen any of my players! Haha! :lol2:

WHITT U SHUTS OUT PC CROWD

Harriers leave Clinton with a 4-1 record and the #2 overall ranking in the ICAA

Story by Jimmy LePage

The Harriers traveled to Clinton last night to fave the Presbyterian College Blue Hose, and they left with a win.

In a dominating performance Whitt U defeated PC 20-0, withSkip McHoltz and crew firing on all cylinders. The game started slow for both teams, exchanging punts for the first three drives each. Then, early in the second quarter, PC's Tim Webb (a Lugoff native) was intercepted by Anton Newton, who returned it just inside Blue Hose territory. Six plays later Lane McCann connected with Shane Malik-Crate to take a 7-0 lead. At the end of the half John Polanski tacked on a field goal to make the game 10-0.

The second half was dominated by defense. Another Harrier field goal with 14:11 in the 4th quarter extended the Harriers' lead to 13-0. But with 4:51 to play the Blue Hose were poised to score, and would have had a George Mathis TD run not been called back for holding. The next play Anton Newton picked his second pass of the game, this time returning it for a touchdown. A Polanski PAT made the game 20-0. The Blue Hose again drove the length of the field, but with 8:17 to play Tim Webb was hit from his blindside, and fumbled the ball. The Harriers recovered, and proceeded to run the clock out on a 21 play, 84 yard drive from their own 5 yard line to PC's 21 yard-line.

"What a great effort by our players," said Coach McHoltz. "They came out with a killer instinct tonight and flat out whipped em. Awful proud of our guys tonight."

The Harriers have jumped in the polls to #2, just one spot behind undefeated Mulcahey City. The Harriers and the Cabbies will play later on in the season. The Blue Hose are set to begin conference play again next week; fortunately for them WU is an independent, so the Blue Hose are still 2-0 in conference play.

But the Harriers may be looking at a Beagle Bowl berth if they can keep this level of play up.

Cabbies drop game

UGSH 7 7 9 0 23
MCU 3 3 0 0 6

Unexpectedly, the #1 ranked Cabbies (5-0) lost to UGSH (1-4). This was not expected by anyone, especially not F1-Insanity College Football Fans, who angrily insulted their team as they watched them lose, and lose badly.

The teams exchanged touchdowns and field goals in the first two quarters. Unfortunately for the Cabbies, it was UGSH who got the touchdowns and MCU who got the field goals. The score at half time was 14-6 to UGSH. To add insult to injury, Cabbies quarterback Stuart Frain was sacked for a safety in the third quarter, followed by another UGSH touchdown later on in the same quarter. Suddenly it was 23-6 and the Cabbies looked desperate.

With a 17 point deficit it was a three play game and it never looked like the miracle would happen. And indeed it didn't, neither team managed a first down in the fourth quarter.

The Cabbies better improve if they want to be the #1 amongst the independents, because performances like this just won't do.
