Matchday 12

A point is a point, but Baleyaroh's fans would probably have desired a victory. Baleyaroh, together with Sativaville, is the underdog in the group and anything that isn't a defeat gives a reason to celebrate. Still, in the next two games nobody is expecting to get anything and a victory against Yesopalitha would have given the team some ease to face them. Now, with no victories in the last ten games, the only one against Cheergirls in the first game, the team's objective to reach 16 points seems getting further.

A boring game with no intensity as both teams waited for the other to take the initiative and make a mistake. With barely any real chances from both teams during the first half, the "protesters" got ahead in the 41st minute thanks to a fine header by Milan Mizee after a corner kick. The second half didn't improve much with the exception of Yesopalitha playing the ball a bit more to create more chances, which still were few. The spectators had to wait 15 minutes to see a shot, from Yesopalitha, that went over. Unfortunately for Baleyaroh two minutes later, in the 62nd minute, their opponents managed to draw the score with a long shot Risa Brittsan miscalculated. She has received too many long range goals. The referee could have ended the game right there, as both teams seemed to be happy with the result, otherwise the lack of intensity can't be explained.

Group 1
Mangolana 1-1 Mapletish
Baleyaroh 1-1 Yesopalitha
Bostopia 2-4 Erathore
Cheergirls 3-1 West Angola

Tactical Update: Coach Vernetta Lavongsar has lost her confidence in golakeeper Risa Brittsan, whom some fans regard as responsible for the team's inability to keep their results in the last quarter, and who will be watching the next game from the bleachers. Hilma Kellish will be playing her first game with Baleyaroh's national team. Even though he scored the goal against Yesopalitha Milan Mizee loses his place to Lurline Gals. And once more the rotation between Hobert Mamone and Hiroko Lipkovitch. Risa Brittsan will be joined by Ellsworth Kellem and Alejandrina Berley as Diamond Argudin and Jin Havekost take their places in the bench.

Early Morning, January 13th, 2012
Darmen National Team Training Grounds, Darmen City, Darmen

Tor Tong Lee sat in the dressing room, waiting for the new Manager to arrive. He was surrounded by his team mates, all of whom were nervous, worried that their starting jobs could easily be lost to some of the younger players who had just been called up from the U-21 team.

Tim O'Donahaue entered the dressing room. All of the players looked up at him with blank stares. Zach Preston managed to do a little more, as he gave a nod to O'Donahaue, and let out a quiet, "Sir." But Tim just nodded to Preston and continued on past the players, and into his office. William von Kriesler, the assistant manager, was there waiting for him.

"Hello, my name is William von Kriesler," said William, in his deep German accent, "I'll be your assistant." Inside, William was steaming with rage. He had always thought that he would have been the next Manager of the National Team.

Tim shook Williams hand and said, "I know that you're probably mad at the DSF, or maybe me, becuase I was picked over you. But I want you to know that I won't hesitate to fire you if I don't have your full cooperation."

Williams answered, "Sounds fair to me."

Tim ignored his answer and continued on, moving back into the dressing room, "Now let me talk about my background. Before I worked for the IG-2, I was the Manager of the Army Academy's Football Team, and I won 6 collegiate titles in 7 seasons. My knowledge of Football isn't lacking one bit, and I know what I'm doing. I will accept any advice you give me, but please remember that I can also have selective hearing. I hear what I want to, and don't hear what I don't want to.

"Now, as for today. We're going to began with a short jog this morning to get our blood flowing." The players and coaches exited the dressing room, and Tim lead the players all over Darmen City.

(OOC: Same disclaimer as the other one. Too much fun.)

"Boss?"

"Yeah."

"We're on the second leg of qualifiers. We're moving along in it. We're not going to face Hockey Canada again this time around. Well unless they somehow reach the proper but...you know what I mean."

"Of course not."

"So why are you still playing with letters?"

"Because it's so fun! Look, Garcilaso Criville, I circle rival goals."

"No you don't. And neither does he, he's a center back."

"True. Still better than Galindo, eh?"

"Well, I mean, Criville is a starter, yes. But he has more international experience under his belt, you can't just..."

"Because Ramón Galindo is in random goal. A bit more consistency is appreciated."

"Consistency...no, just stop it now."

"What if I can make predictions?"

"Huh?"

"You'd listen to me if they were right, wouldn't you? Check this one out, Diego Héctor Carranza is coach trade organizer."

"That doesn't even make sense."

"I think Cobo's going to sell him off."

"Sounds very implausible."

"Okay, uh, what about clubs! Universidad de Dénprade earned a pursed dividend...um, probably, because their attendance has gone up since they started being really good in the first division."

"That's not even a prediction."

"Okay point. Maybe we need a broader scope, how about the UICA...Raynor City United, I ran deity country. Is that one of those "godmods" I keep hearing about?"

"Probably not."

"Hmm. Okay. Neurologists, surgeons toil. True."

"Surgeons are a different club, they're..." Marco paused to look it up. "...only 97th in the global ranks."

"Whatever," said Auderico, who'd come up with more in the meantime. "Petardos S/A soared past...everyone else in the UICA, probably, and Gimnasia gains aim. They won the league!"

"Okay. Stop this. We're done. No more of the Gascon Amatrian."

"The backup...is he injured? What's wrong with him?"

Marco blinked. "Anagram actions. Now you've got me doing it too!"

TRUE DRAW HELPS NO-ONE
Eels put a dent in Chenkoryan Playoff Hopes, Hurst on thin Ice

In what may go down as the most boring match in the entire World Cup 58 Qualifying, the Turori Eels and Chenkorya played out a drab, uninteresting and utterly boring 0-0 result with Chenkorya.

Kirby Hurst, a defender in his own playing days in Civil Citizenry, certainly got his styles imprinted into the minds of his Turorian players, and the Chenkoryan's responded appropriately with their own style of Karela.

The Eels did manage a single shot on target in the first half, while Ronji Miiastara had nothing to do. Literally, Miiastara actually was sat down for 10 minutes as neither side looked anything remotely like challenging the offensive area.

The story was similar in the second half, though Chenkoryan did manage to take a long range shot that Miiastara had to deal with on the hour mark.

The result was actually impressive from the Eels, who had lost 0-3 to Chenkorya in the first meeting between the sides on Matchday 3. The result is also bad for Chenkorya as they are in the hunt for the playoff position in the group, the draw drops them 3 points out of the playoff position behind Virabia, with both sides chasing Qazox who has implanted themselves atop the group in what looks like a runaway finish for them.

While the result was good for the Eels, it will be tricky for Kirby Hurst to take much from the result, being clearly the second placed of the two managers that have had their chance in the second round. Frederick Anxscht of Landereien already won 4-0 against Switzida, and while Hurst's performance is a de-facto second place at the moment with two managers advancing to the final round, it is certainly at threat with either Niko Marek or Gerard O'Shaugnessy able to knock Hurst out of contention with a victory in their upcoming matches against Qazox and Kalumba.

The Waste of a Qualifying Season

By: Marcus Aerolus III, Journalist

When the Yesopalitha Flames started the WC 58 Qualifying cycle, hopes were high in Freedom's Altar. After all, the Flames had beat the odds again and again in the IBC, the U-21 World Cup, the Oxen Cup, and the WISC to make it to the playoffs on each one. The fans had become used to the idea of the Flames pulling off one upset after another to become a new nation with lots of potential. They were horribly disappointed.

One could say that how the Flames started - with losses to Erathore and Mapletish - were to be expected. However, the disappointing draw to Baleyaroh was a setback. It wasn't until the Flames upset Mangolana that they managed to grab two points. This was followed by a win over Sativaville, then another loss...

The Flames currently stand at a record of 2-3-6. It is embarrassing and a shame. The stink starts at the very top. The dimwit who came up with the idea that half of the team should be Unbidden should be fired at the spot. Have you seen the defensive backfield at all? They look like they're dancing around, tripping each other. It's a shame. The midfield, which is supposed to be the strength of this team, is falling apart. Hilary and Jane are getting their behinds handed to them by the more physical players from around the world. And the offense? What a joke! Nadya is being manhandled, Fire keeps getting ignored... This team is in shambles. They have a stinking point total of NINE points through ELEVEN matches. What the hell? We knew that they would probably not make it into the main, but we expected them to get at least TWENTY points. At the rate that they're going, they'll probably be lucky to get to FIFTEEN points.

And I picked the perfect time to write this. Why? Because we have to face BOSTOPIA next. I reckon we'd get beaten 6-1 again like last time, or perhaps it'll be worse since they've totally stunk it up lately. Drawing twice to a team like BALEYAROH? God, spare me the embarrassment. It makes absolutely no sense, how apathetic they've been. My daughter could play better ball. SERIOUSLY.

The notion that Unbidden and Bidden could actually HELP each other out in a SPORTS team is ridiculous, and this team is a PAIN to watch. I propose that we FIRE the stupid ELF COACH and REMAKE the whole team from SCRATCH. ANYTHING would be better than this ETERNAL TORMENT.

But... they are my team so...

Go Flames! Although you suck...

Go Flames!

Why Camian Football should
take a backseat to everything
else.
So now we are losing to territories of nations. Great. Next thing we know Yellow Beach will be able to beat the national team. They're not even a national club, they barely have two players who have an idea what they're doing, and the Yellow Beach Universe will kick Camian Butt. That's a plesant thought.

We are beasts at hockey and lacrosse. The two sports we were born to play. Then we move into the region of rushmore, get some culture rubbed on us, and bam we try to make an impact on the football world. We're not doing a very good job no are we?

We have some good players, not great ones though, hence our World Cup losing record. Wouldn't money be better made selling our good footballers, and spending the money on hockey arenas or something?

Now before you write me off as another derogatory supporter of that Column in the Compolis Courier, just listen to my adjusted reasoning. Take a backseat is what I'd propose.

Now you probably just spewed your coffee all over the place and is asking "What the F*** is he talking about." What I mean by "taking a backseat is, not spending so much resources on publizing and running football leagues. I'd minimize the C-League to one top tier league, and one second tier league, and not make a big deala of submitting UICA entrants. Also, I wouldn't accept any invitation to a Cup of Harmony. I'd limit the national team to World Cup Qualifying and the regional tourney.

Camian Football is begining to start, and begining to grow. I feel deep inside me that my sensible plan to save money and resources isn't that grand. We should keep working at this. We are becoming something that no one expects. All I can say is, "Let's go Jays!"

FEARS GROW OVER RAGNORAK'S BEHAVIOUR
FPIFA Chairman Takes Decision To Carry Around Framed Picture of Emperor Boston

In a frankly rather disturbing twist to the ever-twisting life of FPIFA chairman Magnus Ragnorak, it has been brought to light by interns who shall remain nameless that he has taking to carrying around a small framed picture of the ruler of Bostopia, Emperor Boston. Mr Ragnorak wouldn't give an interview, but it is speculated that he is claiming to those around him that the presence of the Emperor's eyebrows helps him to eat.

Sources believe the chain of events started at President Iversen's party, at which both Ragnorak and the Emperor were known to have attended, and though press were banned form the event, there is a picture circulating on social media sites of three men in speedos dancing on a table. It is hard to tell from the quality of the picture exactly who these three men are, and its authenticity is a topic of debate, but if you believe the rumours to be true then they are President Iversen, Ragnorak, and the Emperor.

It is also known through flight plans that Ragnorak's flight to Supercentro got as far as the Bostonian territory of New Fenton before being forced to land, and it is suspected by Ragnorak experts (yes, we employ those now) that there was an incident on the ground either in New Fenton or upon Ragnorak's return to Franz Josef City that cause this current situation. 'Either there or here', great analysis, experts, you're all fired.

Ragnorak's fondness for baked goods, muffins in particular, has been well covered both in the Valhallan Independent, as well as in newspaper much better than this, and as Ragnorak appears to be more reliant on the picture when eating his trademark muffins, speculation is rife that whatever incident happened, it took place in the presence of muffins and/or other baked goods.

One source close to Ragnorak who has been spending time with him at recent social occasions and has noticed a marked difference in Ragnorak's behaviour had this to say; (The source wishes to remain anonymous, though if I say he is a prominent quantity surveyor in Axel Heiburg I'm sure you'll know who I mean...)
"He just, takes it out and set it on the table when we're eating. Its rather disconcerting. In fact, even when we're talking about eating, which we do a lot, he gets a sort of misty glaze in his eyes, and he starts stroking his top pocket wistfully, as if he can't wait to take it out and look upon the Emperor once again. I think he keeps a smaller version in his wallet as well, as after buying things from the bakery, he always spends an abnormally long time looking at the contents of his wallet before putting it away to start eating. I swear I heard him singing to the picture the other night as well, I only went out for a cigarette and I could hear this hauntingly awful off-tune love song drifting out of the bathroom window. At least, I hope it was the picture he was singing it to... His wife told me he takes the picture and sets it on his bedside table at night as well."

I was going to write more about this story, but I actually feel quite bilious now. Sorry.

LEGALESE CITY - Coming into the tournament, most expected Legalese to at least contend in the group, but now few are surprised when a team ranked far below them shuts them out. What has happened to the Legalese squad. Until yesterday, they were winless and only a loss away from last. Perhaps their second loss to the Equestrian States, this time in Legalese itself, shocked them into gear?

The Equestrian States/Legalese game was not as close as the final score makes it appear. All night long, the Equines kept the Legalese team from mounting a serious offensive. However, Legalese was able to prevent their opponent from scoring for much of the match. Players of both nations exhibited defensive prowess as the game wore on. Though the Equestrians were not angered by their lack of offensive progress, the Legalese team and fans were frustrated by the lack of success.

As the first half came to a close, the crowd grew restless and booed their own team and threw various food products at the cowering players jogging into the locker room. This, of course, did not help the squad's morale.

Within minutes of restarting the match, the Equestrians had established offensive and defensive control of the ball. It seemed the best the Legalese team could do was to keep the ball away from the Equines when on offense, they were so pressured. The frustrated Legalese began to make questionable decisions, viciously slide-tackling Equestrians and shoving them harder than usual when fighting for the ball. Penalties were soon giving the Equines plenty of free kicks to gain even more momentum.

In the 84th minute, Rapid Dash took a dive inside the box, and was awarded a penalty shot. The female pegasus scored with practiced ease, and the jeering grew louder. The final minutes wasted away, and when the whistle blew, the humiliation was complete. For the second time, Legalese had been shut out by a team nearly 250 ranks below them.

Stachland Reds

A Few Thoughts
by Witold Elliott

I have a couple things to admit to. One might be obvious to my regular readers, while the other may or may not come as a surprise to all of you. Beginning with the former, I'll put this as plainly as possible: I never expected Stachland's performance in this World Cup qualifying campaign to be this poor. The Reds have dropped multiple games they should have won, and turned in only modest performances against their two biggest rivals in Group Four, Bergnovinaia and Khytenna.

The two draws against Khytenna are not in and of themselves awful, but they illustrate a severely missed opportunity in conjunction with the poor matches against the lower-ranked members of the group. Meanwhile, the loss away against Bergnovinaia was the death knell for Stachland's hopes of winning the group, and it is to be anticipated that our hopes for second and a entrance into the World Cup proper via a playoff match may be unfounded, as well.

It is not impossible, but it will be difficult. I expect that the Reds will be able to do it, but they must play a better stretch of football than almost any other point in their relatively brief history. Many remaining matches—four of six—shall be at home, where the Reds have performed slightly better than they have on the road.

Even if they were to fall short, the Cup of Harmony is not an unremarkable tournament. It is, in theory, the next however-many best teams beyond the thirty-two that made it to the World Cup itself. And—this is what may have Reds fans excited for the potentiality of missing out on World Cup 58—the Reds' ranking of thirty-eighth in the world means that they would stand a very good chance of winning that competition. Unlike the Cups of Harmony accompanying World Cups 55 and 56, Stachland's national team shall be ranked higher than many, if not most, of their opponents in the tournament. It is an exciting prospect.

Of course, the Reds were ranked higher than all their Group Four opponents save Khytenna, and see how that has turned out.

Now, the second thing I had to admit—and I will tell you that this admission carries much less weight—I have begun to run out of images relating to Stachlandic history, sport, and culture to display in my ongoing series "Better Know a Stachland." You may think that this is preposterous, as we are a nation of eighty-six million people, with many distinct cultures, regions, and traditions. However, it is, in fact, the case. While there are many more specific sections of Stachland that some believe the world should "better know," at what point will my patriotic expounding-upon of Stachlandic culture become less informative and more annoying? And at what point will the topics be too obscure for foreign visitors to understand the significance behind?

Therefore, "Better Know a Stachland" will, from this point forward, occur only irregularly, when I am certain I have gathered enough material to compose an interesting piece. Perhaps it will be before the Reds' next match. Or perhaps it will be during the qualifying campaign for World Cup 60. But it is not now.

Until next time—I hope you enjoy the excitement on the pitch!

Nothing Feels Better

By Liz Sith,

Today WG played Camwood and guess what happened, they actually won! Yes I said it they won, only the second time though however but none the less it's a W not a T or another L, like we are so use to seeing. So with this 2-1 win, the teams record is now 2-2-8, but after this win i'm not going to be talking much about it, why well there is only four matches left and ya sitting at 2-2-8 we're not going anywhere.
The teams overall record in the world cup is a lovely 6-4-16, isn't that nice, in international play over all we have a record of 6-6-19. So note to who ever the hell is head of the West Guiana Sports Association, lets try not to play very much soccer anymore, against teams that could whoop us?
But even though the is entire qualifying round has been hell for us, lets look at it this way, we're in the bottom three in our group, but so far we've allowed 17 goals, now we've played some very high powered offenses and let me tell you, that's pretty good. But, we've scored only 5 goals through out twelve games. It's not very good at all, but the teams we have played and allowed very few goals is stunning, matter of fact the most goals we've allowed thus far is only three, the lest zero.
Domestic sports leagues

NS is just a state of mind, time has no boundary nor does our sanity.

Please ignore my senseless ramblings, I'm getting old.

Huffin' and Puffin
The somewhat bearable musings of a moderately tubby man
- it's Yuri Stempov's Football Blog

Well, this is it now. In my opinion at least.

I reckon we've got no more chances left. The draw with Branta Island was our last one, another two points dropped against a team we should be able to beat. How many more times can the Puffins really go on making these simple errors and failures in judgement. I mean, a one-one draw, that's the same result we had against them in the first half of qualifying.

And so now we're still stuck in the quagmire that is the middle of the table of Group 17, and unlikely to make it to even the playoff spot unless we get the full amount of points from our remaining games. There is no more room for error. There is no more room for mistakes. If we don't get the full points, we're not making it to the finals. Not without our rivals making some serious mistakes too, I suppose.

Of course, we've now lost our game in hand against Wight too, so possibly the most vital game will be against them. And that'll be away too, brilliant. That just about wraps things up really. I'm not happy, and neither's my appetite - I swear, this whole thing is giving me a stomach ulcer.

Keep them fingers crossed, yeah?

-------------- Deity Spotlight --------------

Danica is the daughter of Yosevlod and Thishnaya, deities of the Second Echelon of Hestzhall. The sister of the Goddess of Love, she is sometimes overlooked in favour of that most powerful driving force of humanity, but her traits are equally important. She takes care of all that is creative in the world, and is thus the deity of choice to pray to when suffering from writer's block.

She keeps herself to herself up within the bronze halls of Hestzhall and does not speak often. When she does, she does so in the most quiet of voices but with the utmost intellect and poise. Mortals believe that when she speaks to mankind, if she ever chooses to bless them with her own prose, it will sound like the unified birdsong of a thousand swallows floating across the wind on a pillow of children's laughter. Quite evocative, you'll agree.

'NOON - 18 ossıquıs'

The assassin knew it well. He enjoyed working for Re. The Grand High Cardinal kept himself to himself, usually, only getting in contact when he needed a job doing. Paid well, too. Not like some employers he's worked for in the past. Want a job done at short notice, pay a stingy amount and expect you to listen to their life story for the privilege. The nerve. Of course, when somebody else ut out a hit on them it made them all the more easy to take out if you knew their life story, so the assassin tended not to complain too much about that fact.

The Ossiquis Docks were in the docklands of Sant'Elia, the district of Venezia, specifically. Its twisted piers, jetties, warehouses, and canals were a favourite haunt of the Acquan underbelly, with prostitutes, pimps, gangsters and kingpins just about everywhere if you knew where to look. Many a drug deal had gone down in the Ossiquis, though the assassin had raised his eyebrows slightly when he'd been handed the note on where the hit would take place. Regular citizens, especially those with something to lose, tended not to set foot in the Ossiquis unless they did business there. So unless you were a dockhand, played for AS Débardeurs Nationale, or were involved in the criminal underworld, you tended not to go there.

That said, it was the middle of the day, so there would be fewer nefarious characters around than usual. Plus, these were the national team manager and his assistant. Say they had a trip to Débardeurs' stadium to talk to a few officials but got lost on the way, you could see the stadium from here, and the roads were winding and complicated, centuries old without modernisation in many places. It was quite conceivable that they could have got lost and ended up at the docks.

Not that that mattered much. The bodies wouldn't remain in warehouse 18 for long. He was considering blowing them up. It would disguise the entry wounds best. Still, he was concerned. They were late. The assassin didn't like it when things didn't go to plan. When he had killed the Presidente, he had been exactly where Re had told him he would be, at exactly the right time. He thought back to his conversation with Re the previous day, just in case he'd missed an important detail of some sort...

"Enter!" Re had called from inside his imposingly designed room, its sheer rock walls and long wooden table lengthening the perspective trick towards Re's new golden throne.

"You have a job for me." the assassin had stated from the doorway, not willing to go any closer and reveal his true identity, currently hiding his face in the shadows beneath his deep sable hood.

"Indeed," intoned Re, "usual price. National team manager and his assistant. They are entirely too outward thinking for my liking. I can't have them getting any progressive ideas transferred to the thousands of people that turn up to watch the team playing every week. The players I can control, but first, I need these two out of the way."

"I don't want to know the politics." rasped the assassin.

"Well, whatever. Alessio Cardinale and Stefano Di Falco. You know who they are, I assume?"

"I have seen the newswires, yes."

"Good. I'll arrange for them to meet me somewhere, like last time. Not here, not the same place. Too obvious."

"Then where? And when?"

"Here." said Re, scribbling down the note on a piece of parchment, before sliding it down the table to the assassin with a bag of gold coins. "With your payment. Half now, half later. This happens tomorrow."

The assassin said nothing as he picked up the note. 'NOON - 18 ossıquıs'. He nodded once, pocketing the pouch of coins.

"Don't fail me." warned Re.

"Do I ever?" replied the assassin, before stalking out. The guards of the complex never even saw him leave...

No, he'd done everything right. He double checked his location; crouched on his haunches in the shadows on the upper wooden mezzanine of the Warehouse 18, Ossiquis Docks. His dual crossbow was loaded and coiled, ready to fire, aimed at the table and chairs on the floor below him, sat in the only pool of harsh Acquan sunlight that was allowed by the restrictive fenestration of the traditionally built wooden construction. The light arced across the floor, dust specks dancing in the beam in front of him. A distant paddlesteamer sounded its horn, but aside from that all was quiet.

The assassin frowned, and got up, stalking towards the only other window in the building, up on his mezzanine level, and held up his sundial and compass to the sunlight. It was well past noon. Where were they? It was most unlike Re to be unreliable. He walked back to his hideout, checked the note a third time, and set it down on the floor next to him, confused. The awful handwriting annoyed him, but there wasn't much he could do about that now, and he picked up his crossbow again, setting the stock against his shoulder, and took aim.

He waited.

He was good at waiting. But even now, he was suspecting something was wrong.

After what seemed like an age, he sighed, and lowered his aim. Leaving the note and crossbow on the floor, he crawled back to the window and checked his sundial again. Even further past noon. They had to be two hours late now, coming on three.

He frowned, then looked back to his loaded crossbow and the note. Only, the note, now upside down, didn't read as 'NOON - 18 ossıquıs' anymore.

With a start of realisation, and sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach, he read the note as it had meant to be read for the first time.

'sınbısso 81 - NOON'

"Shit."

** ** ** ** **

Two hours previously, annoyed at being stood up by Re, Cardinale and Di Falco had left trendy new restaurant, Sinbisso 81, in an angry huff. Situated in the centre of the city, Sinbisso 81 was fast becoming a favourite haunt of Sant'Elia's well to do upper classes, and Re was a known patron.

"He could have at least turned up, man!"

"Aye, well, I'm glad he didn't, truth be told. That man gives me the creeps."

"Right. You realise we've not heard from Cascarino or Vaccari for weeks, now?"

"Aye, slightly worrying that the work has stopped on Il Colosseo, too."

"Anyway, shall we get back? Do some work on the tactics for Allamunnic States. I reckon we can take them, you know. We were so close against Cotdelapoms this time. We're improving all the time!"

"Right. Let's go."

"Oh! And did you hear the rumour?"

"No? Which rumour?"

"Apparently some Dagan princess fancies Sanguinacco."

"What, Lucas?"

"Aye!"

"Ha, the sly old dog..."

"Right! Anyway, let's grab a gondola, its not far too Il Colosseo from here..."

Eagles Rip Eels 4-0, Take Control of Group

The past week was a good one for the Eagles, as Virabia lost to Wolmanne, and 2 draws by Chenkorya saw Qazox' lead over 3rd place grow to 9 points with 5 more games remaining after tonight's 4-0 win at Almintora National Stadium,Almintora, Turori. Last match between the two came down to the final minutes as Soai Fu'anuoa scored in extratime to give Qazox a 2-1 win.

This time, Qazox came out on fire, scoring 3 goals in the first 28 minutes and cruised to a 4-0 win, the team's 4th shutout in the last 6 games. Dwight Lynn opened up the scoring in the 11th minute, and Doreen Dobbs added two goals in the 22nd and 28th minutes to give the Eagles a reather unsurmountable 3-0 lead. Soai Fu'anuoa scored in the 83rd minute to close out the scoring.

With 5 games left, the next three games will likely determine if Qazox qualifies directly into the World Cup or if they will have to go through a playoff. The Eagles will be home for the next two games, with the first against Chenkorya, who are sitting in 3rd place in the group and are the only team to have beat Qazox so far these qualifers. But as of late, they've not looked that great. If Qazox wins, they would be just a point away from clinching a playoff berth.

The History of Avatarian Football
.::A Continuing Series::.

Printed in Volume CLXI, Issue 36, 2012.1.02.05

"Understand the future, Learn the past, one must."
~Grand Master Yoda, Order of the Jedi

Writer's Note

Football in the Avatarian Republics has a long and storied history; given that the oldest recorded mention of 'football' comes from the 1870's as a calmer variant of the comparatively-ancient Mandalorian game of meshgeroya, which itself is calmer version of the game of get'shuk, one can only imagine the stories told of its origins and upbringings.

For the purpose of our five-part series, we shall focus on the history of the Republic Premier Football League, from its founding in 1876 to the current year. With the rise of the RPFL in gaining an internation following to the drafting of the first Avatarian player to an international team, we can fairly say that, "we have only just begun."

Part One
The Beginning

I. Introducing Get'shuk to the Earth Kingdom

The game of get'shuk can be seen as the grandfather of football; coming to existence in the late 1600's during the reign of Avatar Kyoshi, get'shuk was used by Avatar Kyoshi as a means of providing stress-relief to her newly-formed Dai Li agents. Introduced to get'shuk during her 'Conquest of the Mandalorian Hordes' (1820-1827), Avatar Kyoshi held a great respect for the game. In her memoirs, Avatar Kyoshi wrote:

In my first month amongst the savages (the Earth Kingdom term for the Mandalorian people) I have been exceedingly surprised by their penchant for such an organised game. While the rules and styles of play still seem so foreign to me, I feel that the men who engage in such an activity --- I have yet to witness any female members --- are some of the most intelligent members of this clan.

Memoirs of The Great Unifier, Avatar Kyoshi, pg. 354

In the years that would come spent amongst the Mandalorian clans, Kyoshi would learn not only the rules of the game, but also become one of the first Avatars to learn the Mandalorian language and establish a peace with the Hordes; this peace would last until the end of her life in 1880, after which point the Mandalorian clans would begin to seek retribution for their lands taken from the Frie Nation during the Imperial Border Expansions of 1879-1882.

After the end of the Conquest of the Mandalorian Hordes, Kyoshi would return to an Earth Kingdom beriddled with corruption; many of the 46th Earth King's officials had set up institutions which would incessantly tax the citizens of the Earth Kingdom in order to line their personal coiffers. In shock, Avatar Kyoshi would make a month-long journey to the capital of Ba Sing Sei. Once inside of the great walled city, Avatar Kyoshi would discover a city in ruins; a peasant uprising in the Outer Ring had seen the destruction of many ancient and valuable historical and cultural artifacts, seen by the peasants as a representation of the 'old government'. Storming into the Palace, Avatar Kyoshi was met with a defiant King, who shouted and ordered Avatar Kyoshi to restore his powers and silence the uprising. Unable to do such a thing, Avatar Kyoshi told the King that she would allow the uprising to continue on its own.

Kyoshi defeats the Earth King's guards

Outranged, the King ordered his guards to arrest Kyoshi, shouting out, "How dare you defy your King!" As the guards closed in to attack Avatar Kyoshi, she quickly disposed of them, gripping the King in a wall of earth before shouting to him, "How dare you defy your Avatar!" Shaken with great fear, the Earth King relinquished control of the Kingdom to Avatar Kyoshi. However, the wise Avatar instead urged a compromise between the Earth King and his people; giving them a voice on the King's Imperial Council, the peasants soon ceased their opposition and peace was restored to the City, ending the Peasants Rebellion of 1828.
Image
Kyoshi training the Dai Li

In order to ensure a lasting peace within the Earth Kingdom, Avatar Kyoshi created a group of elite Earthbenders who would later become the protectors of Earth Kingdom culture and traditions following the end of the Rebellion. Known as the Dai Li, these protectors performed countless hours of repetitive actions; from the simplest push-up to endless drills of forms, they grew tired of their regiments of training, and Avatar Kyoshi needed something new and exciting; the Earth Kingdom had been playing a sport which combined their elemental skills with the placement of a ball into an open ring atop a high pole. However, the players never moved, instead they moved the ball with earthbending, and allowed the ball to simply fly. Avatar Kyoshi felt that while this game --- called dìmiànqiú (地面球) --- perfected the Dai Li's bending capabilities, yet it left much to be desired in their physical capabilities. After several months, Avatar Kyoshi began to teach her agents the sport of get'shuk, and with the help of several Mandalorian mercenaries, soon the sport spread throughout the Earth Kingdom militaries.

II. Shift from Get'shuk To Meshgeroya

After nearly thirty years as the 'Sport of the Military', soon the game began to spread to the civilian populace, particularly in the regions where the military maintained a strong presence. In light of this diffusion, many civilian players began to play on teams against those teams of military members; the events would become weekly occurrences, many of which were attended to by the entire town and military outpost.

As time went on, however, it would be soon discovered that the civilian players could not stand up to the harsh physical barrages delivered by the military opposition. A result of this were many civilians getting injured during gameplay, and many called for their military counterparts to 'tone down' their playing style; of course, this made the military simply laugh, with one commanding officer stating, "Our enemy dare not relent in combat, and neither shall we in our own". After some time, the civilians ceased playing against their military foes, and as such, the rules in the game began to shift. It would be in 1838 that the first recorded game of meshgeroya, or "the beautiful game" in Mandalorian, would begin to be played by many of the former civilian get'shuk players; philosophically the same as get'shuk, meshgeroya was so-named due to the emphasis on skills as opposed to sheer brute force. The civilian players of each town in the region began to form teams, which would then travel around the regions of the eastern Earth Kingdom.

In 1857, on a journey to commemorate the victory of the Peasant Rebellion, Avatar Kyoshi was exposed to one such game, in the province of Hikoru, in which the team from Hikoru took on the team from Ba Sing Se. After a set ninety minutes, the game was a victory for Hikoru, who all wore an outfit of rich brown hues hinted with green accents, while the Ba Sing Se squad wore one of deep greens and golds, emblazoned with the royal emblem. Avatar Kyoshi was so taken aback by the spectacle, she called a meeting with the various Earth Kings and spoke of the value of such an event occurring in areas across the Earth Kingdoms; as not only a means of establishing further cultural allegiance, but encouraging a strong sense of communal unity. It would take several years of touring around to various towns in various Kingdoms before in 1869, the first team of the Meshgeroya Players Union would form, known as the Beijing Meshgeroya Club. In 1870, the second team would form, and at a rate of about one team a year, the predecessor of the Republic Premier Football League would form, known as the Earth Kingdom Meshgeroya Club Union (EKMCU).

LUCKY NUMBER 13

Ouillemet makes dynamic entry; Paladins find new chemistry as they dispatch Lizland 2-0

LAND O'LIZ - After a terrible start to the second half of qualification, the Paladins were forced to spend their bye week holding tryouts to replace injured midfielders, while existing members fretted about their jobs after leaving four points on the pitch in their two matches against group bottom-dwellers. With The Babbage Islands and Kaghazda and Pazhujebu slated to come calling at the Paladin Dome in the next two matches, answers needed to come quickly for the Paladins in a road match against Lizland. After the fiascoes against Armed Bears and West Guinea, the blue and silver couldn't take anything for granted.

And Guillaume Ouillemet delivered.

Taking the pitch in the second half after Yves St-Zotique achieved precisely zilch at left midfield during the first half, the Philemon Mariner promptly sparked a turnaround in the passing game. Meshing nicely with his fellow Mariner Ed, and quickly coming to an understanding with Craig McDougall and Pwin Charbonneau in the middle of the pitch, Ouillemet kept the Lizland right back on the hop all half. He even managed to bring André Vaillancourt-Bosquet back from the dead for a while, setting him up for a beautiful curving 20-footing that was barely deflected wide, reminiscent of his WC57 form. He then sent the corner towards the back of the crowd where Ouillemet found enough space to head the ball into the bottom left corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.

That was only his warmup, however. After Cory Taylor emphatically denied Lizland the use of the NMS back third, Charbonneau found Ouillemet in the box for a shot that flew over the crossbar. Ouillemet wouldn't be denied the next time he drove forward, though, losing his man on a bit of wizardry and threading one in past the keeper's fingers back into the bottom left of the net. Having aggressively seized Fabrice Archer's old job with the brace, Ouillemet was grinning as he spoke to the press at his locker:

"It's great to be playing for the Paladins. When I came up short at tryouts before the Cup, I thought I was done until next time. But I managed to get on here, and I hope I showed that I belong."

Joe Webb and Ed Gregg were also added to the reserve pool of midfielders after the tryouts, although neither of them took the pitch during the match. Webb, in particular, might have to wait awhile after Craig McDougall played an excellent game in Christian Ponder's midfield spot.

Whether any of this will help against runaway group leaders The Babbage Islands remains to be seen.

Melody: Hey Mum.
Sofia: So how was school?
Melody: Good, I have to do big essay based on a book I pick.
Sofia: And what book have you picked?
Melody: Sex with A Dragon!
Sofia: Err, strange choice Melody.
Melody: Well, the book must be about someone who leads an immortal lifestyle.
Sofia: That could about anyone in our family.
Melody: Yes but you're so interesting.
Sofia: Do you realise it reflects in you since I'm your Mum.
Melody: Yeah but I'm already tarnished with that brush since birth.
Sofia: I suppose.
Melody: Don't worry Mum, I'll be respectful.
Sofia: How did you get the book.

That awkward moment when you win 5-0? F*ck yeah!

Apparently its true, not only did we win, especially against a team ranked higher than us on the points table right now, but we won 5-0! FIVE-NIL! I think that's pretty cool. We might not get to go to either ASMV or QPeMA, but at least we'll have some fun with four games left in our journey! Since it came at home makes it more special as we've made a very unenviable home record that is for all intents and purposes, abysmal.

Anyway, our goal difference is only -2 now! That's pretty good considering that we were reeling at the bottom of the group with a -10 just last week! So from a Michael VII football perspective, we've done pretty well, we ain't gonna get near qualifying, but at least Naboompu felt our wrath, and it came hard! Devils Stadium erupted after each goal and for once our fans left happy. Or were they just happy that the drug addicted Arjen Miller finally buggered off the Osarius where he belonged? Either way, it was a great day!

On the not so bright side, Cassa and TKC raped the hell out of us also a couple of days ago, so that hurt, that wasn't cool at all, but one win in the hand is worth two in the mind, so we'll take it as a better moral win than the two losses we've just had. How many others can say they've won in space during qualifying. We've had some fun, that beat was sick, we all took a ride on a disco stick, and we're outta here! We'll just finish off these last four games before taking on Darmen to end it all. WC59 here we come!

Ko-oren Win Again!

Ko-oren beat Actaris 2-0 at home yesterday, and again Koyane Shiribeshi showed all his skill. He scored two, but even as the foremost striker, his presence was all over the field. The other striker, Naemasu Tokachi, did not do as well, but played a solid match altogether. Score at half-time: 1-0, with 67% of possession for Ko-oren. This also illustrates the entire midfield's dominance throughout the match. The Ko-orenite defence remained untested during most of the match, let alone Haki Asgard, the goalkeeper. He only had something to do after 57 minutes, the first and only Actaris shot on goal. Possession after 90 minutes: 69-31.

This means that Ko-oren is now somewhat comfortably fourth, with only three points behind Allamunnic States. And Ko-oren already had their bye round in the second match round in the second half of qualification. Teams at the bottom of group 19 are rapidly falling out of the race for the World Cup, as the last place that still has a chance is currently 5th.

Diary of Mario DeSouza
You have Gotto be kidding me.We lose desperately against absolutely hopeless teams and when we face a superpower,we win.Against a World-cup winning team no less.

I....I'm shocked.Sure, our hopes are all gone for qualifying, but let's end this on a high.Show which country can own each one of them if they can.

UNRANKED TYMASON UPENDS JUNGLE CATS

Vilita falling hard and fast after third straight defeat

If it was going to be tough for the Jungle Cats to make the playoffs before, its going to be nearly impossible now. The Jungle Cats have lost to an unranked Tymason side who were previously bottom of the table. Not unlike World Cup 57 Qualifying, where the Jungle Cats dropped 5 points against Brendino the 3rd, Vilita have already dropped 5 points to the last placed teams of Group 10, having drawn Elmonia earlier in the Qualifying, and then shockingly losing to Tymason on Matchday 13.

For the first time since their return to the World Cup, media outlets and pundits across the Tropics of Vilita began talking about the possibility of needing a different manager other than the duo of Tika Massa and Kris Wrice.

"They have lost three in a row" one pundit said, "Okay, losing to Mytannion - fine. But they've dropped points to every team in the group now other than Brightonburg and Saugeais. Its not acceptable. The Jungle Cats are never going to make the World Cup Finals if they can't beat the bottom teams in the group. It cost us the Qualification in World Cup 57, and its going to cost us again in World Cup 58 Qualifiers. There is no way back from here. They simply can't do it. There is only twelve points on the board, and they need to gain 7 points on Saugeais just to have a shot. Saugeais isn't going to lose to Tymason. Its not going to happen."

Tymason does appear in the top 30 of a recent VOIA report describing the highest amount of Media Activity related to the World Cup Finals by nation.

"Theres a big difference between quantity and quality" according to the reports spokesman, "We're happy to reveal more details about the report, but its based off keywords and transmissions. Thats all. This system is crude and couldn't tell a Picasso from a finger painting done by sticking a lemurs paw in a can of paint and letting it walk on a canvas..."

According to the spokesman, The top 6 Media Activity thus far in the World Cup is broken down as 3 Nations from Group 1, 2 Nations from Atlantian Oceania and 1 Nation from Greater Prussia.

"Nations from Group 1 have accounted for nearly 13% of all Media activity during this World Cup, its actually quite impressive. No other group accounts for more than 10%. Additionally Notably Media Activity has been detected from 100% of Nations in Group 1, the only group that can be said for"

"On the other hand, Group 20 accounts for just 1.1% of Media Activity, while Group 8 just 1.8% of activity, and all from one nation."

As for the Jungle Cats, the Report says that Vilita ranks in at the top of the top 5 in Media Activity, though surely its easier to collect information from the Nation the report is based in. The Jungle Cats Group, Group 10, is right in the middle of the pack on average.

From the BLOG Of Mapletish Football Kaki John...

Mapletish beats Baleyaroh 1-0 at home ...

I am now writing this blog entry with a cup of coffee and a puff on my hand,I was too lazy to blog out the entire match after the match itself, but
under the sunset, our players did well.Oliver Kahner looks solid in goal today with couple of well saves. The old defence problem acted up again with Glena Johnson caught at the left flank and almost gave Baleyaroh a chance to score but Takashi Timi came in from the right to break in with a sliding tackle. Both Morrison and Junio posed threats to the defence but the finishing off wasn't up to standard and a sole goal by Junio helped Mapletish to seal a victory against Baleyaroh for the second time running.
Takashi Domi and Lee Shin Dong came in later in the match to replace Di Natile and JH Morrison. The pair continue to inflict the same damage on the defence.Steven Johnson continued his playmaker role and helped Junio score the winner.Peres De Oliver was also crucial in the win.Apart from all this,Haniff Ja'ffar Sadique made his first national debut replacing Vander Varate in the 67th minute, after Varate limped off the pitch with a possible stretched hamstring.
From my point of view Sir Billy is facing pressure from everywhere,an old defence problem that haven't been solved since the Baptism Of Fire 44 due now, with already a World Cup passed and another Baptism Of Fire and right now in the World Cup 58,the defence problem has worsen.Mapletish could only score 12 goals as compared to Mangolana which is a place below Mapletish and a gap of 5 points to be exact, and while they have scored 15 goals and conceded 12 while Mapletish has scored 12 and conceded 15,a gap of a negative goal difference which is giving Sir Billy a headache.A problem in the attack has also caused Mapletish to score the lowest number of goals among the top 4 teams.Having conceded more goals than Baleyaroh,Sativaville and Cheergirls,Mapletish should have lots to think and discuss about.
I am sure Sir Billy will find a solution soon or else the team will be replaced by a handful of capable managers that has done well in the Republic Cup II with 5 managers proving that they are capable to lead Mapletish.Patterson and Muain are both likely to take over Mapletish if Sir Billy were to be sacked.Patterson delivery of only 2 defeats in the Baptism Of Fire and Muain's invincible Mapletish side in the Minnow Cup has risen eyebrows of many football fans in Mapletish on the decision on whether to give Sir Billy the sack with 6 wins 2 draws and 3 loss,a loss more than Mangolana.Mapletish is currently 13 points away from Erathore,6 points away from Bostopia,5 points away from Mangolana and 15 points away from the bottom team Sativaville.

This have already shown a great improvement carried forward from the World Cup 57,and chances to qualify for the world cup has certainly increased but there are still doubts...
