COTDELAPOMS-

So what happens when the Flames finally give up more than 70 points to a team?

They suffer their first loss of the season.

The Yesopalitha Flames were handed their first loss of the qualifying season tonight, losing to the fortieth ranked team in the world, 76-83.

"Fortieth ranked doesn't matter," stated Coach Scandricks, "We've beaten the fourth best team, and the twentieth best team, so we could've won this one. We just didn't play our A game."

The game was even through three quarters. Isaac Redman, Jr. had another solid game, and Bethany Dickinson was doing fine. The Cotdelapoms team was lighting up the scoreboard as well, with Lucas Turner burying threes and Benoit Landry driving to the basket.

The fourth quarter was all the same, until about five minutes remained in the game.

"I don't quite know what happened," said Redman, Jr., "But we just started to fall apart."

Ryan Thompson had a turnover that turned into easy points for the home team. With three minutes left, the Flames had to foul, and Cotdelapoms won it at the line.

"We were in it till the very end," explained Coach Scandricks, "But then the more experienced team won. I guess as we play more, we'll get better at crunch time."

Halfway through the qualifying round, Yesopalitha does sit on top of the group standings with four wins and one loss, and is a surprise of the season. All the other group leaders are ranked.

"We received a message from the Basketball Federation of third-ranked Cassadaigua asking us to play a friendly," stated Scandricks proudly, "We're being recognized at the international level, which is great."

Dickinson commented, "We let one get away from us today, but I think we can do this still. The Red and Blue are flying high right now."

Next up for the Flames is a friendly at Carasatoga, the host itself.

"We'll be playing good competition, and be able to see the country," explained Scandricks, "And then back out there to prove that we weren't a fluke. We'll be having Sibirsky back in our house, looking for revenge."

Both relaxed and yet serious, this team seems to be handling success/adversity quite well.

Reporting from Cotdelapoms, this is the Yesopalithan Sports Network.

Madame,
We are honored by your offer to play a friendly against the third ranked team in the world at Concord Heights. Though we did lose to 40Cotdelapoms today... If you wish to withdraw your invitation because of this loss, We understand. However, if your offer still stands, we would like a post-qualification friendly with you, for if the Flames do make it to the playoffs, it'd do good to play stiff competition before the beginning of it. Thank you for your kind offer, and I wish your team the best with their season as well.
Lord Zaiden watch over you,

There are just over ten minutes in the second half. The Eagles have a 73-53 lead. Coach Priest and Coach Sims agree to let Coach Navarro coach the rest of the game.

PRIEST: Hey, Annie. Me and Nova Lee need to discuss some things. How ‘bout you coach the rest of the game?

NAVARRO: Sure thing, Coach.

Navarro stands up and surveys the court. The lineup is Oksana Korsakova, Jackie Bouvier, Puffy Woods, Lola Getz and Julie Lee. She points to Missy Chambers and Cathy Clark on the bench.

NAVARRO: Clark. Chambers. You’re in for Korsakova and Bouvier.

Sims is curious as to what Navarro’s doing.

SIMS: (to Priest) Wasn’t Chambers in during the first half?

PRIEST: Don’t sweat it. This is Annie’s chance to coach a real team.

Sims and Priest laugh. Meanwhile, Puffy Woods is fouled. After Woods makes her first foul shot, Chambers and Clark enter the game. Navarro calls Getz over.

NAVARRO: I want you and Julie to run the new offense we talked about. You up to the challenge?

GETZ: You can count on me… Coach.

----------

As the game progresses, Priest and Sims joke about rumors involving Coach Navarro and her guard, Julie Lee.

PRIEST: You know, Julie Lee’s been in the game all 32 minutes, right?

SIMS: Well, she run’s Navarro’s offense. She has stamina. She can go all night.

PRIEST: She fits into Navarro’s… offensive scheme nicely.

SIMS: Hand in glove.

The two coaches laugh. Meanwhile, Getz passes the ball to Clark, who drives to the basket. She’s fouled. After Clark makes her first foul shot, something occurs to Sims.

SIMS: When does Lola Getz’ contract expire?

PRIEST: She’s a free agent. Why do you ask?

Clark makes her second foul shot.

SIMS: Puffy Woods is also a free agent.

PRIEST: So?

SIMS: Lee plays for Palermo. Missy Chambers and Cathy Clark just signed with Palermo.

PRIEST: What’s your point?

SIMS: Look out on the court.

All five of the players Sims mentioned are presently on the court and Annie Navarro’s coaching.

Image
Julie Lee will have four new teammates next season in Palermo.

PRIEST: Now wait a minute. Why would Woods and Getz, who play for the two best teams, the last two league champions, go to Palermo? It makes no sense.

Chambers passes the ball in bounds to Getz, who passes the ball down court to Clark. Clark passes around a defender to Woods. Woods makes a no-look bounce pass to Lee for an uncontested layup as time expires. Lee ends the game with 14 points, 13 assists and 4 steals on the night.

As the players and coaches run into the locker room, Woods runs to Navarro.

WOODS: Whaddya think?

NAVARRO: I think you’re up to the challenge.

WOODS: Thanks… coach.

I fucking knew it! As soon as i decided that this team wasn't a complete bunch of fuck-ups, they go ahead and shit the bed against Megadia 65-63. You know what makes it worse? We missed our last 17 shots and we only scored 6 points in the 4th quarter.

You know what? I'm done. I can't take this anymore. Someone else can cover this fucking team.

Scheduling Error Forces Reserves to Play. Sea Dragons Win Anyway

Following the game against 95X a scheduling error sent the Sea Dragons National Basketball Team to Kelsey for a day of Rest and Relaxation. Just one problem - ASMV still had a game to play at Michael VII. The result was Vegai officials scrambling to try and get the team on the last possible flight and with 9 members of the 12 man team aboard a deep sea fishing boat ASMV would only send 6 players to compete in Michael VII.

So here is the line-up that made the trip:

SG 31 Nadino Ust'tin 25 6’4 200 - BENCH
SG 13 Bykyrola Aw'awa 19 6’6 195 - BENCH
SF 35 Ayaiho Ild'cere 20 6’7 220 - RESERVE
PF 40 Tesis Wor'rani 19 6’9 275 - RESERVE
C 00 Equageo Per'olde 20 7’6 335 - BENCH
SG 14 Jucisu Bel'gha 18 6’1 170 - RESERVE

Shorthanded and without much on court experience thus far, it was simply a matter of waiting and watching to see just how well the “team” would perform. And let us not forget that Michael VII had been playing decently to this point. Luckily the players that were sent were up to the challenge.

Without a true point guard making the trip, the job fell to Ust'tin who had made minimal contributions thus far at his more natural shooting guard spot. The move invigorated the young man’s play as he fit right into the role of floor general. Finishing the game with 7 points and 13 assists proved his versatility to the team and may have opened the door for new opportunities at gaining playing time.

But the real battle was in the blocks as Wor'rani battled with Edmundo Overshiner all night long. This clash of power forwards would define the game as each worked unsuccessfully to gain the advantage. Each had 24 points in the contest. Each had 17 rebounds in the contest. And each had 5 blocks as well. For Wor’rani, who is only a reserve player for ASMV, this was his shining moment of the tournament.

Gigantic Equageo Per'oldealso used his massive 7’6” frame to control the other side of the paint as the youngster from Meldinburg dropped in 12 points and reeled in 11 boards.

But at the end it was Aw'awa, the three point specialist who sealed the game by nailing 9 consecutive free throws in the final 0:44 of the game to lift ASMV to a well deserved 84-73 win.

Now these heroes can join the rest of their team and enjoy a day of R&R before facing Sovreignry in a rematch of game 1.

Sovreignry loses second straight

Postby Sovreignry » Mon Dec 12, 2011 10:08 am

It appears that the clock has struck midnight on the Cinderella story of the Falcons. After losing to Torisakia they just lost big time to Civil Citizenry. With the loss they are going to need a lot of help to make the next round and with Andossa se Mitrin Vega coming to Sovreignry for a rematch of the first game the odds don't look good.

It would be easier just to incorporate a "Grief Region" button, so you wouldn't even need to make the effort to do the actual raiding. Players could just bounce from region to region and destroy everyone else's efforts at will, without even bothering about WA status. Wouldn't that be nice. -Frisbeeteria

Motorway cock-up causes Ipeland to field amateurs
Ipeland team involved in crash, backup loses to Sarzonia

Benchwarmer Neville Donger became the only professional player in the Ipeland team yesterday, after the team's coach was involved in a multi-car pile up, in which luckily no-one was seriously hurt (see Page 5). The rest of the team was made up of people seen on the courts around Walkden, which included one Division 4 West player, two players from the local Greater Walkden league, and one random person who doesn't play for a club. Two replacement head coaches were also brought in. Here was the teamsheet for yesterday's match:

Point Guard: Neville Donger, Walkden Falcons (Premier League of Basketball)
Power Forward: Jack Bale, Donepal Estate B.C. (Greater Walkden League)
Small Forward: Harrison Llangefni, Middle Hulton B.C. (Division 4 West)
Shooting Guard: Gerry Standing, Walkden Housing Limited B.C. (Greater Walkden League)
Center: Barry Opal, No club

Manager: Barry McGuiness (Walkden Housing Limited B.C.) & Tom Markson (Donepal B.C.)

Onto the game, which was pretty much dominated by Sarzonia, who as well as having professional players, are also #1 ranked in the world. The Ipeland team gave a spirited performance, Gerry Standing playing better than some of the professional team at times, but Sarzonia experience was the deciding edge. The final score of the match was 64-91 to Sarzonia.

I interviewed the team and the mangers after the match, here's the transcript:

Me: Thanks for the interview guys. Now first question to Neville Donger, Why did you pick this team?

ND: Well, after I heard news of the crash, I decided to walk around Walkden to look for players. This was the first game I saw, and I watched for a while. When the game finished, I asked a few of the player who I thought played well. I also asked the mangers and the two guys watching. They all accepted.

Me: Everyone else, how did you feel when Neville asked for you to play/manage?

BO: I was in shock, I was just watching a game, when he came up to me and asked me to play against Sarzonia, I mean they're #1

JB: I thought he was joking at first, but I knew he was deadly serious, and I accepted with glee.

BMcG: I was amazed just to meet him, I mean he's an international basketball player, for crying out loud.

TM: He asked both of us to manage the team, and we agreed to co-manage immediately.

GS: I'm surprised he actually picked me, I thought I didn't play well in that game.

HL: I remembered watching a national game there when I was a kid, and it was my goal ever since then. It's a dream come true.

Me: Thanks for the interview chaps. I just have one last thing, to give a bottle of wine to man of the match, Gerry Standing.

GS: Thanks man. Come on, let us go to my home and have a drink.

TORISAKIA—The tough luck for the 95X national basketball team continued in the most recent loss to Torisakia, 79 to 67. 95X never led, and let their opponents open the game with a 15-0 run.

The entire team and coaching staff simply walked past reporters and interviewers in silence on their way to the locker room after the loss, which looked less like a blowout when Kali Cate played the last eight minutes, scoring 15 of her 19 points in the game.

95X's best chance for the remainder of Group 6 play in this 9th International Basketball Championship is finding a way to regroup and play a spoiler role to the teams at the top playing for position, says syndicated sports columnist Ryan Powell.

“They're likely reeling from their no-win performance,” Powell explains. “They have to mentally move past their previous meetings with each team and look ahead.”

Despite the weak performance by 95X thus far, Powell pointed out several bright spots.

“(Kali) Cate is leading the team, something she did every night in the (minor league) CIBA. However, there's much more competition than her previous league.”

With plays like what we saw early in the game, where Cate missed a forced shot over a taller opposing player after being unable to find another 95X uniform in sight, it's clear additional teamwork is needed.

“And,” Powell continues, “despite the drawbacks of fielding a relatively young team, there's a good chance many of these players will continue to grow over the next few years. Even the guys are grown men, they could probably take a tip or two from Cate.”

95X is currently 0-5, and with a point difference of negative 80 clearly hold the worst record in the IBC. When action picks up again, 95X returns to Cascadia for their rematch with Michael VII (2-3).

Mid-Season Report

From the Yesopalithan Sports Network, Facts and Opinions Only

CARASATOGA -

At the sight of the playoffs section of this tournament, Coach Scandricks played his starters for three quarters before throwing the reserves in, and the Flames lost, 80-77, to fifteenth-ranked Carasatoga.

"They've been working their butt off, the game was close, and I thought I'd give the reserves some moments under pressure to see what they're made of," stated Coach Scandricks.

Halfway through their qualifying season, the Flames stand atop Group 4 with a 4-1 record, with impressive wins over fourth-ranked Sibirsky and twentieth-ranked Altimarus. They are indeed the surprise of the tournament thus far.

"Our goal is to build on it, and to gun it for the playoffs," expressed Isaac Redman, Jr., the starting Point Guard and Captain. "It would be the greatest honor ever to be in the round of 16 with so many teams that have a lot of history in the sport."

Through the first five games, the Flames have given up an average of 69 points a game while scoring an average of 83.2. Their point given up average is second in the competition only to Mangolana, who is giving up 68.8 points a game, and Andossa se Mitrin Vega, who is giving up 65.8 points a game.

"Defense is where it all begins," stated Coach Scandricks, "Even if you count the friendly against Carasatoga, we only lose when we give up more than 70 points."

When asked what has to improve in the second half, the Coach explained, "We need to take a deep breath and prepare for the best these teams will throw at us. They know what we can do now, so they will gun for us. We just have to go out and show them that we're here to stay. Also, I have only been using seven out of twelve players a game. I think I might start incorporating some other reserves - some which played well tonight - into the mix to throw some curveballs at our competition. Tim, Jimmy, Nevin, Ethan, and John may get some playing time."

The players' stats so far this year:

Isaac Redman, Jr. 10.6 points and 12 assists a game
Kevin Yeshuan 12.8 points and 5 rebounds a game
Janet Van Haren 8.2 points and 6 rebounds a game
Bethany Dickinson 19 points and 10.2 rebounds a game
Ryan Thompson 12 points and 5.2 rebounds a game
Mark Jackson 8.8 points and 7.6 rebounds a game
Kimberley Jackson 8 points and 3.8 assists a game

Next up, the Flames will face the Capitalizt in Sacred Heart. The fourth-ranked Sibirsky team is sitting at a record of 3-2, with one of their losses coming to Yesopalitha.

"Contain their bigs and run by them," commented DIckinson.

If the Flames take care of business, their Coach thinks they'll be in the playoffs with a 9-1 to a 7-3 record.

"We shall see, now that the world's watching us, how we'll play," stated the Coach before walking away.

With the nation watching, the Flames will return to the court to play the world.

Hello there. Since the previous reporter left due to mental instablity issues, I have been chosen to take over reporting on the Raving Idiots for the remainder of the International Basketball Championships.

Yes the last minute loss to Megadia was a painful one, but a 4-1 record at the half-way stage is a good thing. Why? We're in first by a full game over three teams and for the most part, this rag-tag team has proven themselves worthy of being a contender for the IBC crown.

But with two more road games to open up the second half of qualifying, this team needs to spen these 3 days off consentrating on finishing games. Our next opponent, Mapletish is 0-5, but wouldn't that make any team even more dangerous in an attempt to get their first victory? Hopefully the Raving Idiots will get back on track and maintain the edge in the group they currently have.

It's the top of the hour here at TVC Sports Live, I'm Yareck Tarovic and we're starting with our top story for the evening: the ninth International Basketball Championships being hosted right here in our very own nation. Now, so far the Hawks have had a disappointing showing, only going 2-3 in the first half of the competition. After last nights barn-burning win over Yesopalitha, an upstart team in this year's championships, the Hawks, led by Coach Dick Grey, will be looking to rebound for the second half of the qualifying rounds and actually make it to the tournament proper in the Old Coast Nation. When asked how the team was going to accomplish this, Grey had this to say, "It has been a rough start so far, and honestly we are in a pretty tough group, but I think we just need to pick up our heads, make better passes, take better shots, fundamentals, and then we will start winning games."
So far, there have been no standouts for the Hawks, with certain players doing well in certain games. One such player is Taylor Morris, who has battled through defenses to put up over one hundred points so far this IBC, including going 19 for 30 from beyond the arc. "I just know that we have to start doing well in order to even make it to our own tournament and we're not going to do that by putting up only sixty, seventy points a game against some of these better teams. To do that, I put up threes and they go in. I mean, I really am all for the teamwork, but it just doesn't seem to be rolling and grooving this time around like it used to."
Another story that occurred before the IBC even began was the events surrounding the moving of the tournament from Mytannion, original host, to Carasatoga. We spoke with Dametre Carole, president of the CBA about the details surrounding the move, "From the beginning Carasatoga was enthusiastic in its bid to host this edition of the International Basketball Championships, and when it was announced that the tournament had been awarded to Mytannion I must say that although the CBA was discouraged with the loss, it was supportive of the Mytannion bid and was looking forward to participating in a fantastic tournament. However, the exclusion of champion nation Sarzonia due to the rumors surrounding the future its national sports budget as well as the messing up of the group draw were unacceptable. The stories about bribing that have been reported have been deemed by the CBA as false accusations, but soiled the name of Mytannion enough to where the nation pulled out all together. We glad to see the championships brought to our shores, but are sorry about the circumstances surrounding our hosting. We are looking forward to a successful hosting as well as the Carasatogan side representing us well. Good luck to all nations, i vrelcum du le domingue-Canaseraga (and welcome to Carasatoga)."
Now we head to correspondent Chuck Maury in Jackson with the latest in tournament wide news, Chuck.
Good evening Yareck. Well, here in Jackson, where the Carasatogan men play their home games during the qualifying rounds, the city is abuzz with basketball fever, although it is not always for our home team. Everywhere you look, not only in Jackson but across the nation, you may see people sporting some interesting fan-wear. One example is Sylvie Favreau from Jackson, who, when she watches the games, supports Yesopalitha? "Yes, I support them. They are an amazing team to watch on TV and I love how well they are doing despite how much of an underdog they are." Other fans of other nations can be seen in pubs and other venues, sporting their own wear, "Qazox is the team to beat, everyone knows those Idiots are going to take it all." "It's going to be Valladares, for sure." "The women of Cassadaigua, beautiful and amazing at basketball. No one can stop them." It is nice to see fans of different teams getting along so well, showing how accepting Carasatogans can be. Back to you Yareck.
Thank you Chuck. And now we head over to our IBC analyst, Mariel Myrome for a countdown of the top ten teams this IBC, Mariel.
Thank you Yareck. Now so far this IBC there have been some pretty intense upsets, from Megadia over Qazox, to Yesopalitha overpowering Sibirsky and Civil Citizenry starting 0-2. Seems things have quieted down though as we go over the ten teams to watch for.
10) Megadia, 3-2: Despite a lost to Aleckandor, Megadia has done surprisingly well so far in this IBC, especially coming off of a win over Qazox. Now second place in Group 2 with a 3-2 record, Megadia will definitely be looking to win some more games over Bergnovinaia and Qazox to advance to Carasatoga.
9) Civil Citizenry, 3-2: After starting 0-2, Civil Citizenry has opened up on the competition, going 3-0 in the past 3 games. In a group with the likes of ASMV, which doesn't seem like it'll be slowing down any time soon, CC will more than likely be playing for 2nd place, but from the looks of it, they should have it in the bag.
8 ) The Andromeda Islands, 4-1: The Andromeda Islands started 3-0 before losing to Darmen, but with a win over Sarzonia, the number one team in the world, Andromeda sure looks to be fighting for a qualifying spot, maybe even the number one spot in Group 1.
7) Sarzonia, 4-1: Getting off to a slow start, the number one in the world has picked up the pace and now sit atop Group 1. They still need to win though as the Andromeda Islands and Darmen are breathing down the Stars' necks.
6) Yesopalitha, 4-1: Yesopalitha is the delightful surprise of the tournament so far. Their Cinderella story seems to have faltered a bit since two straight losses to Cotdelapoms and then Carasatoga in a friendly, but before that the team was vying for a number one seed in the tournament and still could get it. This newbie nation will be coming under a lot of fire in the second half though, and the international community wonders if this first-time team can handle the pressures of qualifying for its nation's first tournament proper.
5) Qazox, 4-1: Also fighting for the number one seed before a last-minute meltdown against Megadia, these Group 2 leaders are definitely not going to be taking any prisoners for the rest of the tournament, and honestly, the only reason they are not in the top three of these rankings is because of that loss. Look for them to make it to the semifinals.
4) Mangolana, 5-0: Probably the least paid attention to group, Group 7 houses both the number eight and nine in the world, and surprisingly, it is Mangolana, not Delaclava that has stepped up and performed. This is arguably the weakest group and so the only reason Mangolana is so high in this ranking is because of their undefeated record.
3) Andossa se Mitrin Vega, 5-0: In much the same boat as Mangolana, with an under performing group as well as number one seed, ASMV is a good team, but may not deserve this number three ranking. Still, the Sea Dragons are one good team and will almost definitely be qualifying.
2) Cassadaigua, 5-0: Arguably the best team in the IBC, the females of Cassadaigua are performing extremely well. There seem to be no holes in the pink and black's offense or defense, and they just need to stay consistent in order to get that number one seed.
1) Valladares, 5-0: Even though Carasatoga and Euskirribakondara are not challenging the Valladares squad, this team is doing well and taking names. If they stay undefeated, they should be a lock for the number one seed.
If this were based solely on my opinions on performance though, my top ten would be:
1) Valladares
2) Cassadaigua
3) Qazox
4) Yesopalitha
5) Andossa se Mitrin Vega
6) Civil Citizenry
7) Sarzonia
8 ) The Andromeda Islands
9) Mangolana
10) Megadia
Yareck, one thing is for sure, Carasatoga is not on this list.
Thanks Mariel, and hopefully they can get on there soon. Coming up on TVC Sports Live, we will be talking about Carasatoga's stellar performance in the World Bowl and our new number four ranking, stay tuned.

Okay, so... I input the RP bonuses and went tried to open the file and it keeps saying that the program is forcing runtime to terminate. I will do scores as soon as I find out how to make xkoronate work again. I already restarted my computer and I thought it was going to work but then xkoronate froze and it did it again so I don't know.

Mapletish Municipal Arena, Maplepish--

The true mark of a championship caliber team is overcoming adversity. Qazox lost their last game in the final seconds, and with a few extra days to mull over what went wrong and to correct it for future games. Well that same scenario almost reared its ugly head again tonight at Mapletish, but this time Qazox held off the late rally and escaped with a 77-76 win. Qazox did trail in this game by 10 points at one point, late in the 3rd period, but a 16-4 run over the final 2 minutes of the 3rd and the first 4 minutes of the 4th gave Qazox a 58-56 lead.

With time running dwon, and Qazox clinging to a 4-point lead, Mapletish nailed a 3-pointer with 2.4 seconds left, setting up the inevitable foul, free-throws, last second 3-point attempt BS that most close games end with. But Reggie Mata did something that if it failed would have gone down in annals of basketball as the worst play ever. Having missed the first free throw, Mata delibrately clanged the 2nd free throw of the front iron and the ensuing rebound bounced out to mid-court, where Mike Jordan was awaiting with no defenders. By the time Mapletish could get anyone within a few feet, the buzzer sounded and the game was over. If Mata made the FT or the rebound was taken by Mapletish, then Mapletish, which still had one time-out left; would have had the ball at mid-court with enough time to get off a decent GW shot attempt. So a unusual, but effective strategy worked.

Up next Qazox finishes the 3-game road trip at 3-3 Bergnovinaia. A Raving Idiots win would all but eliminate the Begnovinaians from playoff contention. A Qazox loss could open up the chance for a 3-way tie atop the Group 2 standings.

Flames Rally, Escape with Buzzer-Beating Win

SACRED HEART, FREEDOM'S ALTAR, YESOPALITHA

After the most dramatic game in Yesopalithan Basketball's one-year history, guard Bethany Dickinson had no words to express what she felt after the Flame's 2 point win against the Capitalizt tonight in a sold-out, packed Sacred Heart in downtown Freedom's Altar, Yesopalitha.

"I have no words," she expressed, "We pulled it together, and won."

With such a strong start, going 4-1 in the first half of group play, the world was wondering exactly what this Yesopalithan team was made up of; they got a dose of it tonight.

The Flames came out a bit flat against the Capitalizt, committing five turnovers in the first quarter alone, and not grabbing a single rebound until five minutes remained in the second quarter. The Capitalizt were shooting above 60% through two quarters, and comfortably led, 57-28.

"We looked like blubbering idiots who had never handled a basketball before in their lives," stated Coach Scott Scandricks, still a bit flushed after the game, "But I told them that it wasn't over. That we could handle adversity. And they stepped up, big time."

In the second half, the Flames got rolling. Isaac Redman, Jr., made up for his earlier mistakes by contributing almost 20 assists and Bethany Dickinson scored 24 of her 30 points, while Nevin Williams came off the bench in his first international competition to add ten points and eight rebounds.

"Our defense really stepped up in the second half," explained Coach Scandricks, "And we were able to turn them into easy points at the other end."

At the start of the fourth, the Flames were behind, 77-58.

"We kept telling each other that it wasn't over," said Redman, Jr., "And then things started to happen."

The Capitalizt's starting lineup started to foul out, and the game swung into the Flames' favor. A 18-0 run pulled it close, and the teams went back and forth, until it came to one last shot.

With 5.4 points remaining in the game, the Flames were behind, 90-89. Scandricks called a timeout.

"We called a play in which Bethany was our primary shooter and Isaac was our backup," stated the Coach.

Dickinson was double-covered, so Redman got the ball. Instead of taking the shot, however, he dished it out to a wide-open Yeshuan who nailed the three with 0.7 seconds left. After a Sibisrky attempt at a half-court shot harmlessly fell, the Flames could heave a sigh of relief - they had come back from a 29 point deficit to win the game, and the series against the fourth ranked team in the world.

"Well," stated Scandricks, "I think we showed the world what kind of a team we were tonight. I am aware that Altimarus is sitting at 4-2, and that we still have to take care of business with four more games left in the schedule. But we guaranteed a .500 qualifying season in our first year here. And with some winnable games, I think we can make it to the postseason without much ado - and who knows what we can do when we make it to Carasatoga."

Next up, the Flames will travel to Thatius to play a team that they beat 91-61 earlier this season. Thatius currently sits at 2-4.

"One of those wins, though, came against the Capitalizt, so we mustn't take this game for granted," Scandricks said, "It will also test how we play after a dramatic win like this. Can we handle success?"

The words coming from the players' and the coach's mouths, though, seem to be those coming from a veteran team, not one that is only in its first year of international basketball competition. This Flames team seems to mean business. The question is, can the world handle it?

From Freedom's Altar, Yesopalitha, this is the Yesopalithan Sports Network.

Amber’s Space

Good morning, everyone! We’ve been moving right along here in the International Basketball Championships, as Carasatoga looms closer. Without intending to sound arrogant but realizing it probably can’t be said without being that way, heading to the Rushmori nation for the playoffs was going to be a formality as long as we stayed healthy and didn’t all get suspended, say for cheap shot punching a guy in the face while another stomped on him as he walked by. Our form has been good and we sit on six wins in six games. Most recently, we were in Homelands Our and brushed aside the home nation by the score of 83-64. Scoring the first 12 points of the game did much to take the home crowd out of the game, and I think could have been a bigger blowout if we kept our foot on the gas pedal for the entire game. Not much to really say about it otherwise then to recite off a few numbers, which the statistician in all of us always enjoys. So here they are: Leading scorer, yours truly with 26 points. I thought I hit all my three point attempts in this game, but apparently I missed one, as the statsheet says 5-for-6. I do remember that miss now that I think of it. Jessica Myers had 13 off the bench, her international career high, and I think that’s the most exciting number of the day.

If there’s another group stage that’s kinda gonna mean something, it’s the next one, in Cosumar, which is where we are now. I don’t know what’s been up with Cosumar lately, things have been very quiet on their media front. I remember going back to the World Bowl, and I can’t recall ever seeing anything from them other then a roster release, which given their passion for football was a little surprising. So far, that’s all we’ve seen from their basketball side as well. When we arrived at our hotel in Cosumar, since our rooms were not immediately ready even though it was 30 minutes after check-in time, we had to hang out in the lobby and fortunately there were some complimentary newspapers left. There we saw much of the sports section dedicated to college football. Well, it is what it is I guess, hopefully this is just a slow time for them. The housekeepers also seemed to be pretty slow, because we ended up waiting in the lobby for 45 minutes before all of our rooms were ready. It wasn’t that bad because we ran into some fellow Cassadagan fans who made the trip and I guess checked in the night before, and spent some time with them. It’s always nice to mingle with fans, because it puts things in perspective just in how fortunate you are to be a professional athlete, and furthermore in our case right now, to be representing the country. We'll do everything in our power to keep our run of great form.

Re: Friendly

Thank you for your response. At the time we had not realized that you had already arranged for a mid-qualifying friendly against Carasatoga. Now that we have moved past that point, we will be more then happy to treat you to Concord Heights for a post-qualifying friendly and look forward to the matchup. We make this offer conditionally though in that the game will not be played in the event that our teams should happen to draw against each other in the first round. Given the way our teams are playing so far, I think it is unlikely that we would meet then, so I think we can safely plan for the game. We hope you have a great time once you get here!

Sincerely,
Allison Morris

Ander Arena
Walkden, Ipeland
August 16, 2021

Mase Gumbel stands in a near empty Ander Arena about 30 minutes after the game. Standing behind him is Coach Catherine Priest and Power Forward Angela “Puffy” Woods.

GUMBEL: Thank’s Billy. I’m here at Ander Arena in Ipeland with Coach Catherine Priest and Forward Puffy Woods. Coach, are the Eagles prepared for the Showdown with Sarzonia?

Image
Here’s your host for the day, Mase Gumbel.

PRIEST: Portsmouth has never hosted the World Champions of Basketball before. We’re as ready as we’ll ever be, Mase.

(cut to game action)

GUMBEL: (off camera) About tonight’s game: Things didn’t go especially well early, did they?

PRIEST: (off camera) With so much focus on the Showdown in Sarzonia, some of us were looking ahead. Ipeland hosted this time and their regulars came in with a two-game winning streak. This game was bound to be tough, but we worked through it.

(cut back to Gumbel and Woods)

GUMBEL: Puffy Woods, you’re known as a reliable scorer, but 32 points and 8 rebounds off the bench? What happened?

(cut to Woods coming into the game and looking at the bench)

WOODS: Just after I came in, I noticed Peyton Carter sitting behind Coach Sims.

GUMBEL: Peyton Carter, Coach Sims’ husband, is the coach of the ASBA Men’s Champion Joppa Jaguars.

Image
Peyton “Clutch” Carter, Puffy Woods’ idol, has two Championships as a player and three as a Coach.

(cut to archival footage of the 2007 ASBA Championship Game. Peyton Carter makes the last shot, a three-pointer that gave Joppa a 99-97 win over Portsmouth.)

WOODS: I was eight years old when he made “the shot” that won the 2007 ASBA Championship.

(cut to Woods highlights)

WOODS: (off camera) Clutch Carter inspired me to become a basketball player. I remember sitting in the living room with my dad watching Clutch Carter rise to the occasion night after night. Then, tonight, I saw him sitting behind the bench, watching us. I felt like it was my turn.

GUMBEL: You certainly reminded us of Clutch when you made the three-pointer over Isaac Waymoth to decide tonight's game.

WOODS: It was close throughout, Mase. Ipeland had an answer for everything we had coming down the stretch. But I think this game was good for us. Now, we know we can win in the close ones.

GUMBEL: Coach Priest, what’s your assessment of Puffy Woods’ performance?

PRIEST: She certainly makes my life more difficult during the season. I’m just glad that today, she’s on my side.

Puffy Woods broke off 32 points and 8 rebounds.

(cut to Mase Gumbel by himself)

GUMBEL: Cassie Ellis, Nikki Battle and Josie Hammerschmidt just finished their three-game suspension. The Eagles will need all the help they can get in their next game, The Showdown With Sarzonia. For the Andromeda News Network, I’m Mase Gumbel. Back to you, Billy!

Most basketball experts agree that Angela “Puffy” Woods was the difference that gave the Joppa Lady Jaguars their first ASBA Women’s Championship in 2018.

Woods is known for her trademark hair, which is essentially a frizzy afro. Her hair is also the source of her nickname, “Puffy.”

After basketball, Woods plans to either be a University Professor or a politician.

From the Pacific City Courier:
95X Basketball Fights For First Win
CASCADIA—An anemic twelve-thousand or so sounded like a dull roar in the Cascade Dome, even when Mike Portland hit an improbable last-second 25-foot 3-point shot to send the game into overtime. Despite the small turnout for a weak-performing 95X team, these faithful few cheered their team to a 85-82 overtime win over Michael VII. Bench player Brian Noname came off the bench to make a name for himself in this one, scoring only five points in regulation but also six of 95X's eleven points in overtime.

“I got a few good looks and a few open shots,” Noname said.

95X's leading scorer was none other then Kali Cate, with 24 points. Jody Graven dished 12 assists.

The next matchup for 95X (1-5) is against Sovreignry (2-4), who won their first international basketball game against 95X earlier in the tournament by the score 72-71. The Falcons, as they're called, are coming off a blowout 91-69 loss to Andossa se Mitrin Vega.

By: henry.jouleson@CSNN.cam

Hey it Henry from CSNN (that's Camian Sporting News Network for all ye non-Camians) and the INC isn't lookin very hot for Camwood. Last night after much delay regarding an absence of a late referee, Camwood lost to Mangolana again with a score of 91-83. It was an ugly game for most but point guard Jeff Arwood was on fire! That's all the time I have for now, sorry, bye.
