Flames Shock the World

SIBIRSKY-

With 2 minutes left in the game, Isaac Redman, Jr. stepped off the court, to the loud cheers of the Yesopalithan fans who had made the journey to Sibirsky. The Flames led 76-60 when Coach Scandricks pulled out the leader of this team that had shocked the world.

Coming into this game against the Capitalizt, ranked 4th in the world, the Flames had lacked history, identity, and really, a leader of the team. Coach Scandricks commented, "We were like a headless duck. In practice, I hadn't had any one person stand out to me. I picked Isaac to be the captain because he had worked the hardest. I waited for this game to see who would step up to the plate." Redman certainly did - with 14 points and 14 assists.

At the beginning of the game, the Flames, understandably, looked a little like a deer in the headlights against the more experienced Capitalizt. When 6 minutes had elapsed, Sibirsky led 10-4.

"Our defense was solid from the beginning, making them work for their shots," explained Scandricks, "But we were making unforced turnovers and missing easy shots. They were excited, and just overdoing things, I could tell."

So, the Coach called Timeout.

"They got in the huddle, and I told them, 'Don't treat them like something special. Respect them, yes, but don't get intimidated by their size and height. I know they're big - with the shortest at 6'3", and they got some weight on you. Just run by them, and keep up the heat on defense. Let's calm down and get the job done.' They took well to the message, and well, you can see the result."

After the timeout, the Flame offense took off, scoring 12 unanswered points on the way to leading 20-15 after the first quarter. Isaac Redman Jr. had 3 assists during the run.

The second quarter was a see-saw affair. Rod Dennis, the 6'8" Power Forward from Sibirsky, scored ten points in that quarter, as the Flames had trouble containing his height. However, Kevin Yeshuan made three three-pointers in the second quarter as the perimeter attack got rolling.

40-35 Yesopalitha at the half.

The second half was more of the same, as the Flames started to dominate defensively. Isaac Redman Jr. made some nice reads. Kevin Yeshuan led the Flames in scoring with 21 points, and Janet Van Haren had valuable minutes off the bench, contributing 10 points and 8 rebounds. Mark Jackson snagged 12 rebounds.

"We played hard, left it all out on the court, man," commented Redman when asked about the game, "They are some big guys on that team, but we just played ball the way we know how, using speed and all, and played some solid defense. It was a total team win, and we're ready to build upon this win."

One thing is for certain - when the Flames face Thatius next, who lost to 40Cotdelapoms by 6 points, the world will be watching.

"We anticipate a packed house at the Sacred Heart," stated Redman, Jr. "Madame Nirdasil will be there, too, it should be a fun night."

"This is just the beginning," reminded Coach Scandricks, "We still have a lot of ball to play, so yes, it was nice to win, but we'll keep it realistic and focus on Thatius for now."

This is the Yesopalithan Sports Network, reporting from Sibirsky.

The Adventures of Tib and Mata

*Final Buzzer Sounds*

"Do you believe in miracles? Yes!!!"

"Ummm. Tib, we are ranked much higher than Cakistan."

"WIN, WIN, WIN..."

*Audible sigh from Mata*

"Well folks, I'm Mata here with Tib. The final buzzer has just went off and ABK has beaten Cakistan 92-84."

"A-B-K, A-B-K."

"Tib, come back in here, it's time for the post game!"

"ABK has won, defeating the Cakistan team by 16 points..."

"8 points, Tib."

"8 points, whatever. Luis Dominguez had a dominant game up front, with 18 points and 13 boards. Gary White added 14 points and 8 assists."

"What do you think of the Abdians' chances here Tib?"

"I think the Abdians can go all the way."

"Now Tib, don't you think you're predicting a little too far..."

"No, they're gonna go all the way. Now can I get back to my celebrating?"

"Yes Tib. You heard it hear first fans, the Elephdonkeys are going to win it all here in Carasa..."

*Crash resounds from the other room*

"Oh, not again..."

IPELAND at ANDROMEDA
MARVIN WOOD ATHLETIC COMPLEX
Portsmouth, Allied States
August 1, 2021

6:40 pm

There are about six minutes left in the second half. After maintaining a good halftime lead with their main backup players, Andromeda Coach Priest decides to put in the last three players on the bench. Guards Dominique LaRue, Cathy Clark and Jenny Turner join Forward Puffy Woods and Center Missy Chambers on the court. The other twelve players have all scored. The crowd cheers after Woods made her first foul shot and the three subs come in.

6:53 pm

At the two minute mark, the lead is 88-61. LaRue has three points and Clark has four. Turner has two assists, but no points. As Turner dribbles down court, Coach Priest calls a time out. The players join the huddle.

PRIEST: Everyone. Gather around. Gather around.

The team gathers into a huddle.

PRIEST: Now, as most of you know, my father, Youngblood Priest helped the ASBA get off the ground twenty years ago. There are things most of you don’t know about my father.

Only four players and Coach Sims, a former player under Priest, have any idea what’s going on.

PRIEST: Before he came to the Andromeda Archipelago, my father was a pimp and a drug dealer in The City that Never Sleeps. He was the Man of the Hour, with an air of great power, but dudes hindered him for so long.

SIMS: They don’t understand. Tell it, Coach.

Coach Navarro and most of the players, didn’t understand.

WOODS: Coach Priest, I don’t underst…

PRIEST: He was hard to understand, but a hellova man. This Cat from the slum, as a man, wasn’t dumb. But a weakness was shown, ‘cause his hustle was wrong. His mind was his own, but the man lived alone.

Image
A rare photo of Youngblood Priest before he came to Portsmouth

Most of the team doesn’t have the slightest idea what Coach Priest is talking about. Even Jenny Turner, who played under Priest last year, was confused.

CLARK: Excuse me, Coach Priest. The Game?

PRIEST: The point of the story is: We’re up by almost 30 points. Everyone but Jenny has scored. We got two minutes. Let’s run the picket fence and put everyone on the board. Bring it in!

6:55 pm

The huddle breaks with the team yelling “Superfly,” just as the timeout ends. Turner passes it in to LaRue. LaRue passes the ball back to Turner as she, Woods, Clark and Chambers stand in a row, ready to run the picket fence play. Turner dribbles up to Chambers and makes an easy as Chambers blocks the Ipeland defender. The crowd erupts, knowing that every player on the Eagles has scored.

As the final seconds of the game ticked away, Coach Sims asks Coach Priest a question.

SIMS: You’ve been wasting time outs with that story for years. I’ve always wondered, is that story true?

PRIEST: That story’s as real as this game we’re coaching.

SIMS: Sho you right!

FINAL SCORE: Andromeda 92, Ipeland 63.

Camwood Blue Jays

This is Camwood's first appearance in the IBC. Camwood entered the Olympics with no experience as an international squad and did very poorly. Camian players focus on finese and fundementals. Coach Joe Barthew from the Compolis Nets has implemented a three forward, two guard scheme. His two starting guards run a 40 yard dash in less then 4.6 seconds, and both shooting guards have a three point shot percentage of over .650. Camian Basketball is entirely ameuter, and the domestic league, The CBA, is made up of 6 teams.

Starters
02 PG JEFFERY Arwood (5'11'', 178 lbs) Port Kostas Naviators, Jeff Arwood isn't the biggest guard ever but he is adequete for playing defense and stoping fast breaks. Considering his height he is superb at lay-ups, jump shots, and back-door cuts.
07 SG RAYMOND Wacker (6'0'', 188 lbs) Compolis Nets, Wacker can sink three pointers like nobody's buisness. Wacker is great with man coverage, but is also efficent in zone coverage.
05 SF DANIEL Sanborn (6'3'', 199 lbs) Vanler Mountaineers, "Danny the Dude" is skinney guys for his height. He is a great rebounder and superb in pick-and-roll plays.
08 PF BENJAMIN Haddock (6'6'', 214 lbs) Clemson Executives, Haddock puts "power" in "power forward". The only way to stop him is to take a charge, and after you do that you most likely have a couple broken bones. Dunking and Rebounding are his primary skills.
14 C RICHARD Duvall (6'9'', 218 lbs) White Rock Bears, If you think Duvall's tall, well he's twice as finesed, as he is tall. For a big guy, his jukes in tight spaces, and dribling control are great.

Bench
01 G PHILLIP Ybarra, Petmonton Hawks
12 G MICHAEL Lombardo, Compolis Nets
08 F ALBERT Tarr, Port Kostas Naviators

Will the Real IBC Host Please Standup

In what has been called the biggest faux pas in sports hosting history the nation of Mytannion originally slated to host the 9th International Basketball Championships was blasted with a random disease of incapability and as such one match into the tournament it was abrubtly postponed until a new host could be found. With Carasatoga the host vote loser eventually being crowned, most likely to be the next nation to not fail to host the IBC only weeks after its postponment. It seems the sporting world can find fast solutions, so how does the political world not enable itself to do so? Anyways the Taeshani team quickly boarded a plane and flew off to Carasatoga.

Ironically in the first draw of the tournament the Knights opened up against Spitfyred1, and also would in the redraw. But in the first match the Knights were handedly beaten by their opponents, but after weeks of preparation this time the higher ranked Knights had the upper hand. With a fully retooled team this year and with a new staff many are excited by the basketball that was seen in the first match, and in this rematch played on the night before today. The final score was 76-66 for the Knights.

Kobe Wyaat may only be 18, but he is already the best player in Taeshan, and easily better than many players throughout the world. One may believe that a one man team can never win a championship, but what if that one man leads his league in assists, and points. Wyaat had 27 points. and 15 assists on the night leading the Knights to their big win. Rounding out the scoring were Kyle Swatz's 20 and 9 assists, Peter Pivechi's 18, Vincent Aimes's 5, Torry Washington's 4, and only two bench points from Ivan Ivanovich. The only weakness of the Knights opening win was the total lack of depth shown, but with the endurance of the players on the court, maybe that wont be a problem.

Postby 95X » Wed Dec 07, 2011 9:03 pm

From the Pacific City Courier:
Fouled Out
MICHAEL VII—Coach Mike Mallon knew the new opening game in the Ninth International Basketball Championship was over before the clock hit zero when Kali Cate fouled out with 9:42 remaining, joining starters Jody Graven and Mike Portland on the bench in the same situation. To protect the rest of the starting lineup from possible injury, the bench played the rest of the game.

In the end, 95X was blown out by by Michael VII, 92-68.

“It just wasn't our night,” Mallon commented after the game. “Not just the fouls, but also poor shooting.”

95X shot just 24% from the field, and an even worse 21% on second-chance points off offensive rebounds.

Despite the early loss, analysts suggest 95X should make changes now to avoid being one of the biggest losers of the IBC hosting change, covered in previous stories in the Courier. In the game struck from the records, 95X defeated Western Cuba.

“We have to move on,” Mallon continued. “With only two of the six teams in our group advancing to the Round of 16 and the actual tournament, we have to make adjustments for our next game.”

95X next plays Sovreignry at the Cascade Dome.

Metropolitian Arena, Joehio:

760 people, give or take 12 thousand; witnessed a miracle tonight as Qazox beat Mapletish 88-77. The Raving Idiots were horrible missing over 50% of their shots (35-71); missed 66% of their 3-pointers (3-9) and couldn't even make 20 free throws! (15-19). But as bad as Qazox was, mapletish was just as bad, as they went 5 minutes without scoring a point int eh final 4 minutes, allowing this momentous upset to occur. It was so bad that the bench did play one second of the game, in fear of making Qazox look worse. Next the team will host Bergnovinaia, who rolled over a great Megadia team by 27. Expect this one to get ugly quickly for the Raving Idiots.

Postby Sarzonia » Wed Dec 07, 2011 11:26 pm

The topic of discussion in the Sarzonian locker room after their buzzer-beating 77-75 victory over Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos wasn't guard Chris Draden's 30-foot 3-pointer that swished in as the final horn sounded. It wasn't centre Cole Schooler's game-high 35 points or Will Christian's 8-for-8 performance at the charity stripe down the stretch that allowed the Stars to claw back from a 14-point deficit.

Rather, it was how the Stars ended up in this International Basketball Championships, due in no small part to Mytanar organisers abruptly resigning their duties when it became clear that an international outcry protesting their decision to exclude the Stars from the tournament was too overwhelming.

"We know the Mytanars were too chicken shit to allow Sarzonia into this tournament," said Sarzonia's World Cup of Hockey goaltender Matt Peterson. "They could count the number of championships we've won and how many times we've been to the finals. What they didn't expect was that the world would call them out on their tyrannical bullshit."

Coach Henry West took a decidedly less inflammatory tack but was also irritated by the decision, which eventually resulted in the threatened withdrawals of several high-profile nations including Cassadaigua and Andossa Se Mitrin Vega. When the Mytanars elected not to continue as hosts and Carasatoga were announced as hosts, the teams in question chose to remain in the competition.

"The justification used by Mytanar organisers were specious at best," he said. "Then, when several nations objected, the Mytanars didn't admit to their mistakes. That's what set off so many nations against them."

When told the Mytanar government announced its intent to isolate itself from international affairs, Draden scoffed.

"They're taking their ball and going home," he said. "All because they couldn't exclude us just because. That's lame."

So, too, was Sarzonia's play in the first half. Black Steel (0-1) opened the match with a 14-3 run that saw West burn his first timeout with just 9:43 left in the first quarter.

"I told the lads they started out like they hadn't played a match before," West said.

Carasatogan officials decision to allow several teams to play exhibition matches meant that some teams had more opportunity to build cohesion for this tournament. West was given the decision whether or not to allow the Stars to take part in friendlies and declined.

"We see the benefit in friendlies," West said. "However, we've been together for six IBCs prior to this one, so we know how to play together. We also know the toll this tournament can take on teams. We're confident that we'll stay sharp without friendlies."

However, if the Delaclav basketball federation approached West about playing a friendly match, West said he wouldn't say no.

"Of course we'd be happy to play them if they chose to play us," West said. "We never miss an opportunity to catch up with dear friends."

Sovreignry Looks Good in Defeat Mitch Wilson SSN.com

Even though the Sovreignry Falcons lost in their first match-up against Andossa se Mitrin Vega they only lost by 11 points. They looked good even though the offense failed to produce the scores that people were expecting they showed that they can play defense by holding Andossa se Mitrin Vega to only 78 points. Mitch Williams was able to get his points through three pointers, but Karl Rogers was held to an all time low in career points as the opposing defense was too much for him. William Chocox was effective coming of the bench and the team seemed to do better when he was on, but Coach Cahill has reiterated that Chocox will remain the sixth man off the bench.

Next up for the Falcons is the team from 95x who are coming off on of the upsets of the tournament so far after losing 92-68 to Michael VII who came into the tournament with the lowest ranking of the ranked teams, so the Falcons hope to take advantage of a potentially emotionally down team trying to recover from such a devastating upset.

It would be easier just to incorporate a "Grief Region" button, so you wouldn't even need to make the effort to do the actual raiding. Players could just bounce from region to region and destroy everyone else's efforts at will, without even bothering about WA status. Wouldn't that be nice. -Frisbeeteria

By now, you all are aware of the shocking news that Mytannion would not be hosting the competition after all, and that it was decided upon that we would all go to Carasatoga to play, instead. (Carasatoga had finished second in the host vote). There have been many different rumors about what may have happened to cause such a dramatic and close to unprecedented change. As a player, it is not my job to analyze these rumors, but I was very happy to see CABS (Cassadagan Association for Basketball, the “S” just differentiates from CAB, which is baseball), be one of the lead organizations to question decision-making of the Mytanars, mostly surrounding their treatment of three-time champion Sarzonia. Now all that is behind us, and we can focus on playing basketball once again, and trying to make it to Carasatoga.

On a personal level, the change has caused plans of mine to have to change. For instance, I had to back out of being a guest-speaker at U-12 Basketball clinic in Starksville that was going to happen on a scheduled off-day with the original group. Later that evening, I was going to go to a fund-raiser the Pink Cross in Starksville as well, but that all can’t happen now because we’ll be on the road that day. It’s a shame, but those things can happen, I will try to find my way to these groups for another function in the very near future. Since there is a minor format change in going from 6 groups of 7 to 7 groups of 6, there are no bye days in this new tournament. I am working with inviting the girls from that U-12 team to our home qualifying game against Erathore on matchday four, right now we just have to finalize a few things, and I hope that by flying them out to Concord Heights to be able to watch us play will make up for it, especially if we led them shoot some hoops during halftime in front of packed house! I’m sure we’ll get a blood drive for the Pink Cross going at one of these games too, but as far as that is concerned, remember that they have offices open every day in your hometown for you to make a donation without absolutely needing it to be tied in to some kind of fund-raiser.

We have one game behind us now, and it was a pretty smooth 92-65 win over Homelands our. I guess you can say if it was tough for us to have to prepare to new opponents, that it had to be tough for a new nation to prepare from traveling to a top-5 team’s home court (though don’t tell that to Yesopalitha). Perhaps Sibirsky took their opponent, one we would have played in the old structure, way too lightly. We, however, did not do that with Homelands Our, with a smooth win: leading 22-14 after one, 45-33 at the half, 70-53 after three, then ultimately finishing strong to win by 27. All five of us starters were in double figures; with Danielle Fuller leading the way with 21. We all know this was a game that we were expected to win, but it is a start, and now we can get to thinking about basketball once again.

Sea Dragons Top Falocons 78

It’s always a nerve racking experience as one awaits the initial game of any tournament. That fact is made doubly so when you have a new coaching staff and new players no one is truly certain about. Then add in the pressure of knowing such teams as Sibirsky, Civil Citizenry, 95X, and Delaclava had already gone down in defeat. And as the game with the Falcons of Sovreignry got underway, it was clear that Sea Dragon fans had plenty to worry about.

The game started slowly as the defenses asserted themselves, a trend that would continue for most of the game. As the clock closed in on 10:00 in the first half the score was ASMV 12 (6 of 17 shooting) – Sovreignry 9 (4 of 17 shooting). Though both teams would become a bit more efficient on offense, defense would be the key. In the end, ASMV would find themselves a 78-67 winner with a clash against top seed Civil Citizenry who lost in their opening match.

Erougii Ough'nal was the man of the day for the Sea Dragons as he controlled much of the game with a massive stat sheet – 18pts, 16 boards, 11 assists, 5 steals, and 3 blocks. Add to that the defensive presence of Udenainea Ard'augho (who helped hold Karl Rogers to a career low of 5 points) and Iormuango Say'dare who grabbed 17 boards and had 8 blocks.

If the defense can hold off the Civil Citizenry scoring machines of Acton Ford and Chilton Kody-Filmore and Ough’nal (pronounced Oh-uff-uh-nahl) can once again control the paint, we have a very good chance of winning this game and taking charge of our group.

Postby Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos » Thu Dec 08, 2011 10:44 am

Before the tournament began, I had the pleasure of interviewing the men of Black Steel on their rather smoky team bus.

'We don't got no coach,' said Big Dunkie, whose bald head was largely concealed by a Phrygian cap. 'We don't need no coach. Can't nobody tell us how to play. We kings, we sultans, we like a sea of hoplites movin' and twistin' as one. Ain't nobody gon' oppress us on that court. Can't nobody touch us on it.' I asked him about Sarzonia, the best-ranked team in the world. 'Naw, man.'

In the background trilled a rich, freewheeling melody. It was Trane Dogg, a tall and wiry guard, on his saxophone. 'He don't talk,' said Big Dunkie. 'He only jams.'

Through the lucent sea of musky, herbal smoke - I am still at a loss as to what it was - I saw ackee and saltfish, tuques and dreadlocks, and wondered what on earth these blithesome men were doing in Mytannion. 'Makes a big change from shootin' ball,' said somebody.

A week later, I was scheduled to meet them again. Everything had changed. It felt as though we were in a completely different land. We were. Mytanar officials had made a series of bloopers, which led - quite amazingly - to their withdrawal from the international scene. Carasatoga took up hosting duties.

Then there was the small matter of the actual basketball. The men of Black Steel took on Sarzonia in their first game, and began strongly. Their overly physical style of play seemed perhaps to throw the opposition, whose own performance may have been affected by the off-court troubles in which they were so tangled. Eventually, the Steel weakened and Sarzonia snuck to victory.

I saw the men of Black Steel shortly after their narrow loss, and asked Big Dunkie to review his team's surprising performance.

'Surprising? Naw. Our flow was real cool. I said to these cats what our kinfolk once said: stand up and smite thy enemy - set thy fear in thine adversary. The imperishable stars bow to thee.' I was awestruck by such masterful poetry. 'Man, we did it!'

In my trance, I made some remark about the strength of opponents yet to come. 'Mi simply wan to show dem di iya man,' said King Dread, with startling calmness. My sense of love for these men deepened; this was not about basketball, but realness. How could one not see their struggle?

Ipeland lose to Andromeda

Ipeland's first basketball match in the restarted IBC IX ended in a 92-63 loss to The Andromeda Islands, ranked 35th in the world. Ipeland played well in the game despite losing by a pretty high score, as Andromeda's skill and experience in basketball shone through. Ipeland, having little history in the game, didn't know what to expect, so a loss should've been expected. Most of the match was dominated by Andromeda, but some good tackles and some nice shots helped Ipeland score the 61 points. Poor defending let us down at the back, but coach Brian Lane seemed reluctant to change anything, despite the small group of fans encouraging him to do so.

The Fyreballz suffered a disappointing loss to Taeshan after winning their recent matchup. The team felt disappointing, unable to repeat their single point upset.

Lorraine Hamilton continued her string of disappointing statistics picking up few points and only six assists. Her starting job may soon be lost. The heir-apparant appears to be Piripi Bala who scored seven points but had 7 assists and the same number of rebounds. His brother Madhava Bala was teams leading scoorer with 20 points and also contributed 12 rebounds. However, Madhava was unable to carry the team to victory, even with the help of Kofi Berko. Kofi scored 12 and had an amazing 21 rebounds, a team record. His big man counterpart Chad Teddy was scoreless with a sore shooting hand but grabbed 11 rebounds. Filling out the team, Masamba Sefu scored a few points and Ilan Niek scored 6 free throws.

The team looks to Matchday six for revenge.

Player-by-Player Review
Torisakia 91, Civil Citizenry 90

Leighland Whitcomb -- did not play. The aging 34-year-old was rested for the opening game of the tournament, saving his stamina for a potential deep run in the tournament. Unfortunately, the loss of his leadership at the helm of the offense may have cost the Citiz the game, as the Explorers sure could have used his late-game experience to overcome its one-point deficit. Indeed, every game is critical, with potential threats Andossa Se Mitrin Vega and 95X ready to pounce on any little slip by the international sixth-ranked team.

Acton Ford -- 22 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists. A strong debut for the 23-year-old, fresh out of Janwick College, who established himself as a complementary scorer to Alder Hayes. The Explorers will need that kind of point production against opposing teams that can consistently put up scores in the eighties and nineties.

Gifford Brawleigh -- 13 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist. For a 6'8" small forward who would rather hang around the basket than create scoring opportunities for himself, an almost-double-double is pretty good. Now in his third international tournament, he is getting the chance to step up - and the team would like to see him be consistent with these numbers. He has had trouble with consistency in the past, fluctuating between good and weak performances.

Chilton Kody-Filmore -- 8 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist. Here's a guy who's always had the talent to be a starter on the national team, but only steps up to produce when the team truly needs it. In a game against Torisakia that Civil Citizenry should have won - well, the team needed him. And he didn't come up with the goods. Still, consider this more of a warm-up game for him - a trend, rather than an outlier. At the very least, he has an improving backup to aid him if he falters.

Alder Hayes -- 25 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks. Never afraid to take matters into his own hands, he called for the rock more than he usually does, hoping to singlehandedly keep pace with the surprising Torisakians. He was clearly the most dominant presence on the court, and that is a role he will need to continue to play for the Explorers to go deep. He was the driving factor behind the Citiz' third-place finish at home several years ago: now he just has to do it again.

Otis Farrar -- 16 points, 1 rebound, 5 assists. He displayed a prolific shooting ability that most onlookers probably did not expect from someone thrust into the point guard position in his first international game ever. Though he sank four three-points on offense, he didn't exactly impress on defense, lacking the tenacity that Whitcomb has always had. Still, as long as the rest of the team can pick him up on that side of the court - which wasn't evident in this game - the Explorers will benefit from his red-hot shooting arm.

Ensor Santana -- 2 points. With Ford on form, the relegated guard didn't see much action on the court. He did sink a long jumper in his only scoring opportunity, earning the praise of quite a few nostalgic fans.

Tildon Calvert -- 4 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal. At 6'11", he certainly looks like someone with massive court presence. He didn't exactly assert himself once he got out on the floor, though, conceding room to Hayes instead. Nevertheless, he can be a go-to guy in the paint should the team look to mix things up (rather than repetitively pound the ball to Hayes) and should Kody-Filmore be having an off day, as seemed to be the case today.

Metropolitian Arena, Joehio:

The Raving Idiots once again stumbled their way to another luck win 88-81 over Bergnovinaia. Roger Malden went only 11-18 from the floor and yet this team still won. How can the best player on the team miss seven shots and still lead the team in scoring? Impossible I say! I think somehow, QIBA's using old tapes from previous IBC's to make it seem like this team is better than they really are. Up next for the team is a trip to 1-1 Silver Beach. Expect a double digit loss!

HOLY HAMMERSCHMIDT!!!

Postby The Andromeda Islands » Thu Dec 08, 2011 11:01 pm

ANDROMEDA NEWS NETWORK

ANDROMEDA EAGLES at SARZONIA STARS
THE PALESTRA
Woodstock, Sarzonia
August 3, 2021

Kent Chapman, veteran sports reporter for the Andromeda News Network, stands outside on a clear night in Woodstock with a lighted Palestra in the background.

CHAPMAN: Most basketball experts considered Sarzonia’s narrow win in their first game as an early-tournament anomaly in their quest for a third straight Championship. They predicted that Sarzonia would be back to dominant form tonight at the Palestra. Someone forgot to tell the Andromeda Eagles.

(cut to Cassie Ellis making an easy layup on a fast break)

CHAPMAN: (off camera) It seems that the Andromeda Eagles were unaware that they were playing the three-time World Champions on their home court. They were led by Center Josie Hammerschmidt, who had 19 points and 12 rebounds.

(cut to Hammerschmidt at the post game press conference)

HAMMERSCHMIDT: During the flight here, the coaches kept telling us to just play our game. Coach Sims said to forget about who we were playing, where we were playing and why we were playing and just play.

(cut to Hammerschmidt and Bouvier on offense)

CHAPMAN: Hammerschmidt and Jackie Bouvier combined for 32 points. Ellis and Battle also managed to score double figures in limited action.

(cut to Julie Lee setting a pick)

CHAPMAN: Julie Lee played for 30 minutes, registering 8 points and 8 assists. She also set several screens for her teammates.

(cut to Lee at the post game press conference)

LEE: Basketball is a team game. Sometimes, as part of a team, you got to take it fast and take it hard. Banging with the big boys is worth it if, in the end, you come out on top.

(cut to reserves Lola Getz and Puffy Woods running a pick and roll)

BATTLE: (off camera) This just shows that every team has a chance to win every night. We got another game in a few days, so we can’t let this go to our heads.

(cut to Dominique LaRue making an uncontested layup)

HAMMERSCHMIDT: (off camera) Now that I look back, I’m not sure that I believe what we just did. It’s amazing just thinking about it.

(cut to Chapman)

CHAPMAN: The basketball community was turned on its head tonight by the Andromeda Eagles, a team not smart enough to understand that they weren’t supposed to win. As Nikki Battle said in the post game interview, “Ignorance is bliss.” For the Andromeda News Network, I’m Kent Chapman.

Unlike most centers, Hammerschmidt led her team in free-throw percentage. She also led Todd’s Cove in field goal percentage, rebounds and blocked shots.

Hammerschmidt is also the lead singer for a local band in Todd’s Cove, the Happy Hammers.

FALCONS POST FIRST INTERNATIONAL WIN!

Postby Sovreignry » Fri Dec 09, 2011 12:21 am

Mitch Wilson SSN.com

OH MY GOODNESS! That was the reaction from the few Sovreignry Fans in attendance as the Falcons pulled of the last second upset of 95X handing the now reeling team into a second loss. With 10 seconds left on the clock all of the Sovreignry attendees knew whose number was going to be called. Andrey Divac shot an exquisite pass to who else but Mitch Williams who pulled up and shot a dagger into the last hopes of 95X as fans of the SBA have seen him do all year.

Even with Williams' late game heroics it was again the defense that led the way that gave him the chance to make the shot. Coach Cahill changed up the starting lineup and instead of Mike Thompson he started Matt Constanzo in his place in order to help Steve Boggs keep 95X's offense from gaining any momentum. While this led to a predictably lower scoring game it seems that in this tournament Cahill is willing to let his defense lead the way when the offense struggles. Even though he came of the bench Thompson still managed to score 20 points. Karl Rogers was able to recover from his abysmal first game and regained his shooting stroke with 25 points mostly from the paint after only attempting 2 FTs the entire game. Other scorers were William Chocox with 5 points, Andrey Divac with 10 points, Tim Lentz with 9, and Mitch Williams with only 3 points the three that were needed at exactly the right moment.

While 95X played admirably fortune just happened to favor the Falcons this time and fans hope that it considers them to be the team it smiles upon the most.

Sovreignry's next game is against surprise team Michael VII at Sovreignry City Arena where the team hopes that the fans will pack the stadium to show the international basketball community what a real crowd looks like.

Sea Dragons Roar to 2-0 with 89-61 Rout of CC

The second day of the IBC is in the books and the Sea Dragons are proving to have a mighty roar. Following their matchday 1 win, the team took the long flight to Civil Citizenry to take on Group 6’s top seed. Everyone involved expected to see a hard-fought, scrappy game that came down to the wire. Everyone involved was wrong.

The Sea Dragons won the tip and a quick pass was followed by a thunderous tomahawk jam from Laxyn Ight'dela who also stole the inbounds pass and made the easy layup to give ASMV an early 4-0 lead. The boys in sky blue would never look back. In fact it would never even be close as the Sea Dragons would turn a first quarter 14-2 lead into a whopping 89-61 victory that saw many of the home crowd begin to file out the exits at the end of the third quarter.

The star for the Sea Dragons was once again Erougii Ough'nal who posted a near triple double with 18 points, 11 boards, 8 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks. Laxyn Ight'delawould finish with 23 points to lead ASMV scorers. Acton Ford would lead CC with 31 points, but he received very little help as Alder Hayes was stymied by the ASMV big men and Leighland Whitcomb struggled and even seemed lost at times during his first game of the tournament. There was little fluidity and chemistry on display for the Citiz who now must work their way out of an 0-2 hole.

Next up is the no name team from Torisakia who handed CC their first loss. They can be very tough and the Sea Dragons will have to be very careful not to ovcerlook this potential stumbling block.

So close
Ipeland lose by one point

Unranked Ipeland lost their second match in the IBC IX, but only just. Darmen, ranked 54th in the world, manage to only just survive a superb Ipeland team by breaking the hearts of the Ipeland home fans by scoring 3 points in the last 3 seconds of the game.

Ipeland fans prepared for the worst after Darmen's Michael Beasty and Herbert Davis scored 30 points in the first quarter, compared to Ipeland's paltry 6. Ipeland staged something of a comeback in the second quarter, albeit a small one. Isaac Waymoth scored 12 of the 24 points scored in the quarter, bringing the score to Ipeland 30-30 Darmen. The 3rd quarter was a high-scoring, but very even one, 60 points being scored, Darmen edging Ipeland, 63-57. Ipeland lead for most of the final quarter, until the very last minute when Beasty skilfully dribbled through the Ipeland defence and had a shot that was almost blocked. It went in, Ipeland and their fans were devastated.

Knights Win Second Game of IBC

Look at that two games and two wins. The Knights actually seem to know what Basketball is again and with there incredibly low international ranking the Knights are somewhat shocked and with the low experience of the young team many in Taeshan are shocked at the excess of the teams actual amount of points scored and games won so far. With a 75-66 victory last night one point from last weeks victory the Knights defeated Camwood and moved into a three way tie at the top side of the IBC Group 7 standings. Kobe Wyaat led the team with 24 points on the night.

Player-by-Player Review
Andossa Se Mitrin Vega 89, Civil Citizenry 61

Leighland Whitcomb -- 2 points, 1 rebound, 3 assists. He looked positively embarrassed on the court, thoroughly stymied by the pesky Vegan defense. He seemed to have lost the court vision that made him a lock for this position in past tournaments - and that's something the Explorers cannot afford. Though Whitcomb is certainly getting up there in age, most did not believe he would perform so poorly in his return; indeed, basketball players are often capable of performing at a high level well into their thirties. Many are hoping that this is an outlier rather than a trend, but if this becomes indicative of Whitcomb's performance, don't expect him to see much of the hardwood that he returned for.

Acton Ford -- 31 points, 4 assists, 2 steals. It's safe to say Civil Citizenry can't A. Ford (afford) to lose his presence on the court for very long. Despite the Citiz' anemic offensive production - a reversal of their strong ninety points versus Torisakia - he still dropped home 31 points. That's more than half of the entire team. It's an auspicious start for Ford, who seems to be the only bright spot on a squad that definitely isn't playing at a level worthy of number six in the world.

Gifford Brawleigh -- 5 points, 3 rebounds. The small forward frustrated fans and vindicated pundits around the nation, following up a solid near-double-double with an anemic showing. He played pretty well defensively; in fairness, covering Laxyn Ight'dela is no small task, and the damage (23 points for the Vegan) could have been worse. Still, these are not the numbers that head coach Reynold Turner expects from a national team starter, even from its decidedly weakest link.

Chilton Kody-Filmore -- 8 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist. The games when Hayes fails to control the paint are few and far between, but it is then that the team needs Kody-Filmore to step up in his stead. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case against Andossa Se Mitrin Vega. Maybe out of surprise, maybe out of introverted nervousness, maybe out of deference to Hayes, the second-oldest starter on the team failed to contribute very much. The fact that he is returning to the international stage for the third time and yet cannot take the helm of the offense when he is needed is a little worrying - though the entire team, and their quick 0-2 record, seems to be worrying as well.

Alder Hayes -- 6 points, 8 rebounds, 1 block. Does Erougii Ough'nal dredge up memories of anyone? Oh, the glory days of nine years ago, when an 18-year-old power forward stepped up onto the big stage and took a firm grip on a young, wild, inexperienced team. Maybe Hayes saw a lot of himself in his Vegan counterpart. Then again, he might have just seen his chin, since Ough'nal has a good three-inch advantage on Hayes. But what we saw was utter domination. Whereas Hayes normally is the driving force inside on both sides of the ball, he found himself overpowered by someone with viable size, skill, and explosiveness. No one expects his loss of power to be chronic; however, Hayes really must do a lot more against the best teams to help the Explorers repeat its semifinal run.

Otis Farrar -- 3 points, 4 assists. Called upon to replace the struggling Whitcomb, he deferred to his teammates to create offense, unwilling to forcibly control the action with such little initiation to international play. But his tenure at Coastal Citiz proved him to be a strategic and playcalling mastermind - attributes that the Explorers could really use, with such little on-court structure for a team that lost a lot of its players from the eighth Championships.

Mead Newell -- 4 points. He saw his first minutes of the tournament - and his international career - late in the game, with the Vegans already out of reach and the unconfident Brawleigh needing a rest. He's closer to a shooting guard than a forward; he has more speed and more shooting accuracy than Brawleigh, who, at 6'8", was originally Kody-Filmore's backup. Though Newell gave a good show while he had the opportunity, this tournament seems to be just an overture for him: Turner is likely to search for veteran experience on a young team, and will probably side with Brawleigh when he can.

Tildon Calvert -- 2 points, 4 rebounds. Hoping that Kody-Filmore would heat up, Turner did not throw Calvert into the game until the second half. He impressed on defense, allowing only minimal scoring to opposing Udenainea Ard'augho.

Randolph Remington -- 2 points, 3 rebounds, 1 block. The big 7'2" center's first opportunity on the court produced a strong performance, even if the stats don't show it. (Let's be fair: almost every Citiz player's stats in this game are weak.) He doesn't have the raw talent of his teammates, which is why he's only a bench player for now. But his size could become a game-changer in the future if the team needs someone competent against tall centers (like Ough'nal).
