Mcleod Cup IV for Babbage rules football (complete)

Postby The Babbage Islands » Mon Jul 25, 2011 11:28 am

Mcleod Cup IV
An international Babbage rules football tournament

Jump to tournament draw and schedule

The Mcleod Cup is the premier international competition in Babbage rules football. Cup management issue a call for teams representing the nations of the world, be they bona fide national select teams, professional or amateur clubs, universities or other bodies, to gather at Wye, South Island to compete in Mcleod Cup IV.

We expect a minimum of 12 teams, and are prepared to accept any multiple of four up to 32 teams. Should more than 32 teams apply they will be accepted first come, first served. A maximum of one team per nation and two teams per controlling entity will be observed. (Various puppets of the host nation are available if and only if needed by management to fill out the field to a multiple of four teams.)

Advance commitments have been received on behalf of several of the top nations in the sport.

The competition will run over two weeks, with six match days scheduled. The first week will see the contestants divided into four-team pools using a pot-system draw that recognises international rankings. A single round-robin of three games per team will be contested in each pool. The second week will see the field split into single-elimination brackets to contest the Mcleod Cup and also (in descending order of precedence) the Plate, Bowl, and Shield minor awards in a manner frankly borrowed from rugby sevens competition.

Tuesday, August 9 -- Pool play, round 1
Thursday, August 11 -- Pool play, round 2
Saturday, August 13 -- Pool play, round 3

Monday, August 15 -- Quarterfinal matches
Wednesday, August 17 -- Semifinal matches
Friday, August 19 -- Final matches

A technical document is appended that outlines precise structures for varying numbers of teams.

Basic organisation

Pool play is single round-robin in pools of four teams, drawn using a pot system. The exact order of matches varies according to the built-in schedules of the scorinator.

All teams advance from pool play into one of four three-round, single-elimination* tournaments. In order of prestige they are the Cup, the Plate, the Bowl, and the Shield. (* In certain circumstances, first-round losers parachute into the second round of a lesser competition.)

Quarterfinals are paired by overall rank from pool play, with all first-places ahead of second-places, all seconds ahead of thirds, and all thirds ahead of fourths.

Cup/Plate Quarterfinals: All first-place and second-place teams. Best two third-place teams.

Ranking of teams from pool play

  1. Total competition points based on 3 per win, 2 per draw, and 1 per loss.
  2. When exactly two teams in a pool tie on competition points, their relative standing in the pool is based on the result of the head-to-head match between the teams.
  3. If #1 is tied and #2 is inapplicable or indecisive, teams are ranked based on net margin of points for minus points against in their three matches.
  4. If #3 is indecisive, teams are ranked based on total points for in their three matches.
  5. If #4 is indecisive, ranking is determined by lot.

Technical support will be provided using the xkoranate 0.3.2 system. Fair play assessments (OOC: RP bonus) are generous and based on an accumulation of performances for each round. Early submission of team rosters to facilitate media coverage is viewed favourably in addition to other efforts.

Future editions of the Mcleod Cup will be scheduled annually (OOC: Babbage time--monthly IRL), instead of the ad hoc scheduling of the past. To ease the burden on federations and encourage continuity of programmes, all nations that enter and complete the fourth Cup will automatically receive complimentary entry to the fifth Cup without further application. Of course, requests to not receive automatic entry will be honoured, and such entry will be withdrawn should the national federation cease to exist.

Mcleod Cup V is expected to begin on September 13.
Mcleod Cup VI is expected to begin on October 11.
Mcleod Cup VII is expected to begin on November 8.

Signups updated through Tarrentum.

With enough entries assured to promote a reasonable tournament, I'll confirm now that entries will close a week from Thursday, August 4, at 2359 CDT (0459 UTC). I'll post groups and a schedule that Friday morning, which will leave the whole weekend plus for posting rosters and initial RP. (Should we actually see 32 entries I'll cut off more quickly, but I'm comfortable with a smaller event.)

Page three, already, on a fairly-active signup? I'll take one bump with a reasonably clear conscience.

So, your main nation and one puppet is fine.

Done. The signups have been updated in the OP.

Since this will convert to an everything thread and we have a decent field assembled, any entrant who wants to post their roster here is free to do so. Pool assignments will not be up until Friday morning (entries close Thursday night), but that shouldn't be an impediment.

Tamarindia Roster

Postby The Golden Tamarind » Mon Aug 01, 2011 5:57 pm

Tamarindia Roster

A team from the Academy of International Relations will represent Tamarindia at the Mcleod Cup.

Babbage Rules Football is not known in Tamarindia at all, apart from a select group of enthusiasts at the Academy for International Relations in Libertad. Here people study for careers in the diplomatic service, the international Units, and other trades relating to the wider world. Hugo Caillett, lecturer in experimental sports and admirer of Babbage Rules, has put together a team of interested players to represent the Tamarindies at the Mcleod Cup in The Babbage Islands.

Offense

1 Estrella Volpicelli snapper F 23
Student of International Conflict. Wants to be a peacemaker diplomat. Worried about rogue nations led by fifteen-year-old totalitarian warmongers.
2 Carmen Ordóñez slant F 29
Doctor of Philosophy presently engaged in thinking about 'supernatural players' - the idea that nation states – even the whole world - are run by external 'gods' who are simply 'playing a game.'
3 Nesto Doma fly M 22
Student of Experimental Sports. Which means sports not played in Tamarindia. Nesto hopes to become an international ambassador for Tamarindian football, preferably somewhere scenic and peaceful.
4 Corazón Carmenate deep/OB F 20
Student of International Relations. Wants to work for Unit-5. The Specialists who specialise in making international relations work out, by making... adjustments.
5 Lucio La Spada screen M 34
Part-time lecturer in Rushmori & One Big Island Studies. A follower of Babbage Rules, he has a pirate satellite receiver to watch the NABC Premier League live games on television. Supports Wye Whalers.
6 Fernando Durán QB M 35
Head of Experimental Sports. A former professional footballer who played for AIR Libertad. Retains a healthy scepticism for experimental sports whilst excelling at pretty much any that he tries out. If he'd started twenty years earlier, could've been an international Babbage Code sensation.

Defence

7 Jessenia Castro safety F 21
Student of Philosophy and research assistant to Carmen Ordóñez on the Supernatural Players theory. A devout athiest who thinks multidimensional string theory might explain where ex-nations go.
8 Jérôme Alderete charger M 24
Studying a Masters degree in Global Geography. Working on a paper to explain variation in international cartography. Privately admits he is stuck and may also use string theory to help dig himself out.
9 Inéz Mayama nickel F 21
Student of Teaching Tamarindo As A Foreign Language (TAFL). Hopes to be a Tamarindo Teacher in a rich and exotic country that pays way over the odds for an Anglo-Spanic tutor. Very athletic.
10 Xénia Masa middle F 35
Doctor of International Pharmaceuticals. Specialising in reconstructing compounds of expensive medical treatments for cheap distribution to fifth- and sixth-world countries. May use an international trip to buy Babbagian Prozac for analysis.
11 Hugo Caillett rusher M 43 Captain & Coach
Lecturer in Experimental Sports. Loves Babbage Rules, supports the Purple Wave. Would like to form a Babbage league when he gets back, imagines being the first Tamarindian Babbage Code Commissioner.
12 Quique Sanz middle M 21
Student of International Relations. Has already been recruited to become a Specialist for Unit-5. Planning a 'holiday' in The Babbage Islands at the end of a tournament.

Bench

13 Alfredo de Torrente M 64
Professor of Experimental Sports. A former professional footballer who played for Unión Libertad. If he'd started forty years earlier, could've been an international Babbage Code sensation.
14 Trinidad Solaté F 27
Master of International Religions. Part-time lecturer. Prodigious conspiracy theorist and militant athiest who has been decreed by the Academy too volatile for international duty in the service of Tamarindia. Even for Unit-5.

RP PERMISSIONS
Granted in full: Knock yourself out - or us. Anything goes, except preserve us from death or supernatural happenings. Other than death itself, if it could happen, it can happen.

The nation now formally known as Tamarindia - TG them, not me!
