World Women's Hockey Championship I - Rosters, RP and Scores

Postby Wolfmanne » Thu Jul 07, 2011 11:41 am

Welcome to the World Women's Hockey Championships I, the premier event for all the girls out there playing Ice hockey. Along with the World Cup of Hockey, the World Junior Hockey Championships and of course, the Olympics, this is one of the greatest shows on ice. There are not as many teams in this competition as there are in others, but nevertheless, we can get started.

Rankings
For the purpose of this tournament, ranking, shall be based upon performance at the last Winter Olympics, from the V and VI Winter Olympics. Only 5 teams, Cotdelapoms, Carasatoga, North Chicanan, Bergnonvinaia and Sarzonia, have been ranked. The rest (including me) start with no ranking, however a large RP bonus will make up for this. Anyway here are a list of the ranked team, with the skill mods next to them.

1. Bergnovinaia (2.1)
2. Cotdelapoms (1.5)
3. North Chicanan (1.2)
4. Carasatoga (0.6)
4. Sarzonia (0.6)

Scorination, RP bonuses and Style mods
Scorination will be done with the latest Xkoranate. RP bonuses are set at 60%, since this being the first tournament and considering that very few teams are ranked, I want there to be lots of action to win, rather than relying on Margaret and skill mods, which is why it is so high. Maximum RP bonus awarded is 1.000, with half and half for quality and quantity. NSFS style mods are being used. Tiebreakers used is head-head, goals for, goals against and goal difference. Style mods, like the World Cup of Hockey, is has a minimum of -3 and a maximum of + 3.

RP cutoffs
18:00 BST (British Summer Time). If it's late than at the most the RP cutoff will be 22:00 BST.

The Ice Lotus Prepare for Sarzonia

Republic Hockey Team Arrives in Cotdelapoms; Prepares for World Cup

From the Republic Associated Times, 2011.07.07

Following months of preparation, practices and the success of the Men's National Team in Cotdelapoms, the Gyatso-kai Women's National Ice Hockey Team has finally arrived in Cherrybrook in *smudge* Wolfmanne.

The twenty-eight women chosen from the most elite teams in both the Women's Avatarian Hockey League (WAHL) and the Women's University Hockey League (WUHL) from across Gyatso-kai were selected around the same date as the men on the World Cup of Hockey Fifteen's Third Place Winners, the Ice Bisons. While the Ice Lotus' are known to be a more aggresive and offensively-orientated team, many believe that the similar coaching styles of the Skirata Brothers --- Kad Skirata of the Itakawai Lightning and Vend Skirata of the Keldabe Riverhounds --- will result in a very similar performance from the Women's team as was given by the men's team earlier this month.

Given the traditional blessing by Avatar Aang two days ago, the Ice Lotus were boarded onto a custom-painted Airbus A380 to fly the extensive trip across the globe to Wolfmanne. Much as with the World Cup of Hockey earlier this month, the airlines of GyatsoAir and AvatarBlu--- in partnership with the WAHL, the AHL and the National Sports Council --- have reduced the prices of airline tickets to Wolfmanne to facilitate the spectatorship of the nation for these events; a similar promotion was ran for the World Cup of Hockey, which saw a record 187% increase in travel on GyatsoAir-chartered flights for the weeks before, during and after the event. However, unlike the Ice Bisons' games last month, each game theIce Lotus play in shall be aired only on ASPN2, while games involving other nations shall be aired on World Sports Nation. Much as with the World Cup, should the Ice Lotus advance into the knockout stages, then all games shall be aired exclusively on ASPN Prime, which is once-again being made available on all television and internet-provider services at NO COST from now until the conclusion of the Women's World Cup.

After moderate success by the mens national team's debut at the World Cup of Hockey, Wolfmanne's women were ready to skate onto the ice. All preparations had been made and the girls could now take over. This would be the first World Championship, with the Winter Olympics being the de facto one until now, for women. Teams had turned up however it seemed like the national bodies weren't bothered about it.

Nicknamed the she-wolves, they would have an action packed series, against their rival teams, in particular, North Chicanan, who were the favorites to advance out of there group with 1st place finishes. The ranked teams may or may not dominate. Gyatso-kai is an example of a team which wants to win; their national body and media were taking an interest in broadcasting games.

WBC Sports would be broadcasting the Wolfmanne matches on WBC Sports 1, the Semi-FInals, the Third-Place Playoffs and the Finals, with other matches on WBC Sports 2. Several radios and newspaper would publish results. Women's ice hockey was a growing sport and the Elite Hockey League had even established a league for women, EHL Girls, which would be starting soon and would takeover the Wolfmanne Amazon Ice Hockey Federation Premiership (more commonly known as the WAIHF Premiership) as the premier league, due to it's professionalism. Many players in the women's team are from University, since the WAIHF Premiership is largely amateur.

The Cotdelapomaise Women's Ice Hockey team will be wearing the same sweater as the men that just finished in fourth place as the WCoH. Women's Ice Hockey is a popular participation sport from the youth levels all the way to senior levels, though there is no professional league in Cotdelapoms. It is, however, quite popular at the university level in Marianne, and women's hockey is also popular at the annual Cotdelapoms Winter Games.

Game 1: Gyatso-kai 1 - 1 Sarzonia

(((Sorry I missed the first two days... Here are the news reports.)))

Ice Lotus Tie First Game; Reap Comparison to the Ice Bisons

From the Republic Associated Times, 2011.07.09

Unlike their male counterparts in their first World Cup Match, the Republic Ice Lotus could not capitalise on a late-period power play to seal the win in their 1-1 tie against the Sarzonia *smudge* .

"It was just a tough game," spoke first-line center Sato Annleigh. "We got the early go-ahead goal and kept the Sarzonians to nil until the third period. That was when just could not make that last-minute goal."

Bringing in just two penalties in their first International Game, the Ice Lotus have adapted well to the skill-set of international play; compare this to the Ice Bisons' four penalties against the Cosumarite Ice Dragons in their 5-4 loss. In addition, while the Ice Lotus play a less-physical style of play than their male counterparts, they are known to be more offensive on the ice and are known for very aggresive plays; a rub-off from Ved Skirata's style of coaching which he is known well for at Keldabe with the Riverhounds.

"The women today did well, though, we have a good deal of work to do," spoke Coach Vend Skirata after the game. "We need to learn to maximise our penalty units and get the goals when we need them most."

Tomorrow's game will pit the Republic Ice Lotus against fellow-unranked Deminina *smudge* who are coming off of a 2-0 loss against Gallund. While the Deminina team is not set to take the Cup just yet, the Ice Lotus should not dare underestimate their strengths.

(((Now for Game 2 :( )))

Ice Lotus Shut Out! Give Up Two to Seal Their Fate!

From the Republic Associated Times, 2011.07.09

Failing to capitalise on any scoring opportunity as well as proving little threat to their opponents, the Republic Ice Lotus were shut out 2-0 in their second game of the Women's World Cup against unranked Deminina.

While they were given very few opportunities to score a goal --- garnishing a little over 8 shots a period --- the Republic Ice Bisons failed to come together as a team in what supposed to be an easy win for the team. The Demininan *smudge*, however, struck first and proved lightning does strike twice; scoring two goals within the opening five minutes.

"I felt bad for (Kato Kaoru)," spoke Head Coach Vend Skirata after the game. "She just could not keep the shots out, and when I pulled her from the game, the look of defeat on her face was almost unbearable."

While Kato has been the lead goaltender for the Ice Lotus in the last four Winter Incarnate Games, this series as shown her to be a very weak link in an otherwise strong chain. After facing just four shots and allowing two goals, Skirata pulled the young gun and replaced her with seasoned Veteran Yu Calfuray, who has been the lead goaltender of the Ice Lotus for the ten years before Kato came onto the stage. Though Yu managed to keep the *smudge* from scoring any more goals in this game, the damage was already done; the Demininan goaltender *smudge smudge* was an indomitable wall between the pipes. She managed to block every single one of the Ice Lotus' 22 shots for the game.

Tomorrow, the Ice Lotus will face off against now-second ranked Gallund, who themselves are coming off of a 0-0 tie against the team from Krumbia. Back in June, the Ice Bisons managed to pull a 2-1 win against the Gallund team, so we can only hope our Ice Lotus can do the same!

Scores have been cancelled tonight. The XML file I've saved has became corrupt, so I need to run a program to uncorrupt it, but this could take a day.

Gallund Ties Match Against Krumbia
Gallund National News

After Gallund had a super against Deminina shutting them out 2 to 0 they thought they were ready to face Krumbia in their 2nd game of the season. Gallund seemed ready for this match as they were well rested after a good night of sleep.

Starting off the first period Gallund's Pam Dannly won the face-off passing it back to Kate Spree of Gallund. With Gallund passing the puck around they got a player at the back-corner(near the opposing blue-line) they lured everyone but two player in but those were at the blue line. Kimm Guinn of Gallund did a quick board pass to Fern Weens of Gallund who had a break away chance against *unknown* but was robbed as *unknown* was a snow fence and got the puck most likely because Fern didn't get the puck in the air on the chance. With *unknown* covering-up everyone got a chance to re-group and get ready to start. Gallund brought out the 2nd Line of Jane Kimnly, Jill Ups, Kit Thinner, Cassey Demms, and Allison Ayer. With a great chance Gallund couldn't get a goal while on the bench the coach had given that line a talking with by saying how bad they did things but from our stand-point they did everything fine. With two more chances to score Gallund couldn't. With a some-what boring period about to end *unknown* of Krumbia got a hooking penalty which got herself 2:00 in the sandbox. With Gallund getting 3 more shots on goal they couldn't put the puck in the back of net. *Unknown's* penalty ended with 0:30 left in the first period.

While in the intermission Gallund's coach was criticizing the team on how bad they did in the first, which now we think was just a fuel for fire that didn't work. Still coming into the second period Gallund had a chance to get on-top of Krumbia which they did to no avail with the first shot of the second being 0:56 in the second. With Gallund's second shot it took a deflecting off one of their own and went to *unknown* on Krumbia to flew pass the defense to be one on one with Andrea Ferns Gallund's starting goalkeeper, but took the shot and miss the puck giving Andrea time to get the puck and cover-up so her team can re-group. With 5 shots after all those for both team the second period ending leaving everyone dumb-founded as they though at lest someone would score.

Again Gallund's coach was screaming at her team about how bad they did and they to "@#&%ing score a $#@&ed goal" as quoted by the coach. With both teams getting tired they tried to keep the teams up and running by putting 6-Hour Energy in both teams drinks to make the game more exciting and get the players going. But that worked with no avail as only 6 shots combined were taken in that period, three for each team. The third ended with both coaches deciding to end the game and call it a tie.

THE final SCORE

Gallund - 0
Krumbia- 0

The files uncorrupted, so I can scorinate again. RP cutoff. I'll be scorinating the 2 days we missed and today as well. Also the scores saved onto the XML file were deleted when it got corrupted so mistakes may occur in the table. Notify me if you see any.

As a note, RP bonus has been increased to 80%. Why? Because I don't Margaret to let a team which hasn't rped win. This has become very inactive and I want to fix that issue.

BSRN: Hockey national associations under fire

By Thomas Lehmann

The World Women's Hockey Championships I has been heavily criticised due to many national hockey associations lack of funds to the women's teams competing.

The Cheryl Cup, the trophy that the winning team receives for winning the final along with the gold medal, was expected to be the biggest prize for women - however it wasn't. The Wolfmanne Olympic Council has been putting extra funds towards the teams, with them finding motels for the teams to stay in. rather than the 5 star hotels as expected.

Even Wolfmanne's team, the host, was staying at the lower end; each player has found their own bed and breakfasts and they're paying it out of their own wages. However the the organisers for the WWHC as contacted the qualifying teams national associations requesting them to better fund the event, although many of the messages have come out wrong.

Wolfmanne has also made mistakes of hosting, such as misspelling team names, despite continuous rows from the team staff and the players themselves. For example, they misspelt Spitfyred as Spityfyred, much to the disgrace of the team. Excellent work, my beloved Wolfman!

In other words, Spitfyred has been awarded the Hockeygirl Cup for finishing 1st overall in the Group Stages. This prize was kept a secret by the organisers, although we can see a tradition coming on for future WWHCs.

Bergnovinaian Women's National Hockey Team Smashes Qhaddafis in the Last Day of Group Play--Advance to Quarter Finals as #5 Seed

WOLFMANNE, WWHC I--Even though the Bergnovinaian Women's National Hockey Team, or BWNHT for short, has qualified for the elimination stage with a defiant 6-0 shut out of Qhaddafis, the BWNHT players, staff, and fans know that BNWHT did not perform at their best of their ability. However, BWNHT moves into the quarterfinal stage with a bye as #5, and a win is a win.

Despite the incredible showing by the BWNHT as they rallied to secure their second place position in their group, obliterating Qhaddafis 6-0 (with 2 goals scored per period), BWNHT manager, Peter Sacarn, released the following statement because of the hounding from the press.

Yes, the BWNHT is incredibly delighted in our 6-0 defeat over Qhaddafis... that team sucked, frankly, so we are delighted, but not as thirlled as the media puts it to be. It doesn't take much to beat the living daylights out of a team that rounds off the group table in last.

Of course, it is within our expectations to defeat these teams easily, because our team took the Gold medal at the last WInter Olympic games. Our players our in top shape, fit to perform, and should be ready for any task ahread of them.

WIth that being said, I cannot put together an explanation as to why we did as porrly as we did, letting that random Spittywhatevermagiier team pass us in the group stage table. One thing is for sure, I will be keeping a closer eye on all of the proceedings of each game as to not let things fall out of hand, so don't be suprised if we come back from being seeded 5th to win this whole thing.

Of course, the media will be keeping a close eye on all the proceedings too, watching to see what happens and if the BWNHT will really be able to bounce back from being second in their group to taking the whole championships.

Many members of the sports media have speculated that it is possible for BWNHT to at least make it as far as the semis since, in theory, the momentum from their 6-0 slaughering of Qhaddafis should be enough to supply great confidence as they take on #4 Gallund. Beyond there, it's anyones guess really.

Spitfyred1's Women's hockey team celebrates their Hockeygirl Cup and look forward to their off day before the quarterfinals.

The women had been relatively silent in the press until now, focusing more on their play than upon the media. As the play-offs begin, the squad has the wish of support from the homeland.
The team has had very little support from home to this point and feel that their successes are becoming overshadowed by Beach Football. As a plea for an audience their media attack has changed.

Lily Jameson wrote:We call on our friends, family, and fans to do whatever they can to support us. Watching the television, listening to the radio, coming to a game; any action will help the cause. Hockey has a ways to grow in Spitfyred1 and we hope to be the team to kickstart a rebirth in the sport. Thanks.

In order to drum up support from the male audience, the squad also has decided to take photos for a limited edition calender to be sold on online bidding sites. In order to support the calender we will announce the women for every month at the same time as announcing the roster.

January GK Silvia Bonmennet- Silvia is a rising goalkeeper, who has much to gain from this experience. She is looking for an overseas goalkeeper spot on any team. This is her chance to get a gig on an upperlevel team. Starter
February RD Julianne Montgomery- Julianne is a tough woman who has played for second division unisex teams her entire career. She has a reputation for being harsh.Starter
March LD Wao Peng- Peng is the only starter who is in university. She has had a strong season despite being the only female on her school's team. She hopes to play abroad after she graduates and help spread hockey. Starter
April C Lily Jameson- Lily is the veteran and Captain of the squad. She has seen the growth of hockey in Spitfyred1 and has long hoped to bring attention to the sport. This will be her last tournament, and she hopes to start a more professional hockey league in Spitfyred1 after she retires.Starter
May RW Kate Baobengtu- Kate is the star of Spitfyred1 hockey. She is one of if not the best hockey players in Spitfyred1 history. She has played overseas so far and looks to find a big contract in the coming season. She loves representing Spitfyred1. The fans love her not only for her aptitude at scoring goals, but she also has looks that command attention from many male fans. Starter
June LW Trish Vonnegat- Trish is a strong player but is not exceptional. She plays with a lot of effort, but has yet to break out. This is her chance to find a team to be transferred to. Starter
July RD Joan Newsome- Joan is a rising college player. Her sports school is one of the best in the nation and has toured internationally. While not a starter, she is a player to watch.
August LD "Red" O'Neill- "Red" dubbed for her long flaming red hair is a tough player in the mold of Julianne Montgommery. She is secure in her second level team, but hopes to bring gold to Spitfyred1 in her last hockey playing years.
September C Aubrey Baobengtu- Aubrey is a rising star similar to her older sister Kate. While still in college with her friend Joan Newsome, she has thrilled the scouts. She hopes to gain attention despite being a college freshman. While she does not start, in recent games she has played more often than Lily Jameson.
October RW Sara Harndt- Sara is a quick player who is fun to watch. She has yet to perfect her slapshot, but has endeared the fans. She has a career ahead of her, but much more to grow.
November LW Jane Tubara- Jane is a differant type of wing. Playing with Joan and Aubrey in university, she is a converted defender. She is known to push through defenders and shoot hard.
December UTIL Lee Pao- Pao is an exceptional player. A converted football player, she has the ability to play any position. She must choose a position before becoming successful.

Nation Returns To Sporting Action, Sees We Made Another Playoffs
Sea Wenches face Sarzonia for slot in the Playoffs

Aiden Jones, Livingston

The North Chicanan Womens Hockey Team, affectionally known as the Sea Wenches, have been off in Wolfmanne for the last week, checking the sites and experiencing firsthand international play.

And while our region is in constant turmoil and the islands just gained a territory the size of Denmark added on...which is ironically our region's own Denmark...anyways, while busy the ladies scored a respectable 2-2-1 in group play, and while they led for a bit are forced into the knockout stage as the #7 seed with hopes they can hold off an always pesky Sarzonia side to advance.

Mind you...our history:

WC55: Made Cup of Nations Final 16, we're still projecting a poor result
WB13: Qualifier. WB14: 4th in conference
WCH14: 12 Seed, CC: Quaterfinals, WC15: I think we were last?

So yeah, lets say even if we do well it seems we're prone to a second season collapse.

Anyways.

Quenton Fitsmonth, head coach for the National team and his home side, the Lady Rooks from Belhan-Castille, has been pleased with the performance of the team and expects the side to perform admirably further in the playoffs. "Fingers crossed but we know we have the fans back home pulling for us."

As for the burgeoning scandal over accomidations in Wolfmanne, we want to assure everyone the team has been staying, on the Northern Hockey League's dime no less, in one of the best hotels in Hockey City. Even with no telly coverage of the cup, the NHL wants the women's team just as well treated as treated as the boys side and expects them to always play as one of the best.

The Sea Wenches play off with Sarzonia tomorrow in the Cheryl Cup, hoping to get into the Final 8 for the first time.

Coach: Marti Fisher (45)
Fisher played hockey from when she was a little girl and continued to play until her late 30s. She was a rugged defenceman and brings that tenacity to her role as the coach of the inaugural Sarzonian women’s national team.

Assistant coach: Loreli Baker (52)
Baker was a forward for six years with a select women’s team, and takes on an assistant coaching role in spite of only having played hockey competitively for those six years. She diagrams most of Sarzonia’s offensive sets.

Goaltender’s coach: John Brooks (39)
Brooks retired from playing as a goalie in Sarzonia’s top flight hockey league three years ago and sees this opportunity to develop women’s goalies as his ticket to a position as a goalie coach for Sarzonia or another hockey league.

Roster (starters in bold)

GOALIES
1 Jessye Spencer, 32, 5-foot-10, 160 pounds
Spencer has the most experience of anyone on Sarzonia’s roster, having started playing hockey since her tween days. She has spent some time on men’s teams as a backup goalie and now assumes a starting role.

30 Candy Collins, 23, 5-foot-8, 140 pounds
Collins has quick reflexes and good quickness within the crease, but her lack of size and experience mean that she’s not ready to assume a starting role just yet.

Defencemen

First pair

2 Alyssa Haughton, 27, 5-foot-9, 150 pounds
Plays extremely rugged defensively and is known for being somewhat physical when compared to other women’s hockey players. Has been known to get into fights.

3 Sarah Stevens, 28, 5-foot-11, 161 pounds
Stevens is known for her size and her speed. She also has been known to give vicious checks in leagues that allow such physical play.

Second pair
9 Joanna Clyburn, 30, 5-foot-10, 144 pounds
She is the prototypical stay-at-home defenceman, preferring not to join the rush, and as a result, is often on the bench when the Stars are in a situation where they need a goal.

14 Lisa Albers, 23, 5-foot-6, 120 pounds
Albers is arguably the best offensive defenceman on Sarzonia’s roster, and will frequently serve as the point woman on the power play. She is also among the best passers on the team.

Third pair
16 Cammie Offenberg, 25, 5-foot-7, 130 pounds
Offenberg is known for being stubborn in her defence, along with being able to anticipate an opposing player’s moves and prevent them from happening. It makes up for a lack of speed whenever her quickness can’t.

21 Danielle Studevant, 19, 5-foot-8, 135 pounds
Studevant is the fastest defenceman on the roster, but also the rawest. She still has a lot to learn about how to play the game, though the veteran players should help her in that regard.

First line
LW 6 Karyn George, 22, 5-foot-8, 134 pounds
George has the hardest lefty shot of anyone on the roster and the most speed. [OOC: For any NHL fanatics, think Geoff Courtnall.] Led her travel team in scoring with 14 goals in 50 games.

C 10 Pia Lundquist, 26, 5-foot-11, 170 pounds
Best on the team at winning faceoffs, and arguably the best at organizing the offence, she also serves as a back up point woman on the power play. She’s not the best at defence, so she would not be part of a penalty killing unit.

RW 13 Louise Sanderson, 24, 5-foot-10, 160 pounds
Sanderson is the best defensive forward on the Stars, so it stands to reason she’s a key cog in the team’s penalty killing unit. She scored 12 goals in 36 games played before a minor knee injury ended her season.

Second line
11 LW Tara Landry, 23, 5-foot-9, 152 pounds
Landry usually plays left wing, but can centre a penalty killing unit, and often will in the event that Sarzonia otherwise would play their first line in a penalty killing situation.

12 C Kim Clayton, 28, 5-foot-10, 180 pounds
Clayton is by far the biggest Star in terms of time spent in the weight room and is another physical player on a team that has no shortage of them.

15 RW Joyce Tippett, 26, 5-foot-9, 145 pounds
Tippett may be a right winger by trade, but she has played all five positions on the ice that don’t involve goaltenders’ pads. She has been known to don those, however, and would be the designated emergency third goalie.

Third line
22 LW Alexis Arnold, 29, 5-foot-10, 144 pounds
Arnold is someone who can get by opposing defenders and get a shot on goal, but she hasn’t quite gotten the hang of other aspects of her job. She eventually may be seen on the first line someday.

24 C Dana White, 30, 5-foot-8, 132 pounds
White is the woman who is most counted on to play a defensive role as a centre. She has been known to serve as a defenceman in a pinch. She is not a premier scorer, but she can set up the scorers.

7 RW Brianna Calvin, 21, 5-foot-10, 137 pounds
More known for her shot and her speed than she would be for her stamina. Otherwise, she might be on the first line and might take double shifts in a playoff situation.

The play-in match is hardly the right time for a goalie controversy. However, the Sarzonian national women's hockey team faces just that.

A 5-3 defeat at the hands of Gallund saw Jessye Spencer concede five goals by the midway point of the second period. It forced coach Marti Fisher to send her to the bench in favour of reserve goalie Candy Collins, who turned aside all 14 shots she faced after Spencer allowed the five goals on just eight shots.

Now the few in the media who cover the Stars women are clamouring for Collins to get the start against North Chicanan. However, Fisher shook her head when asked if she'd made the decision to bench Spencer.

"Jessye's our starter," she said. "For better or worse, she's the one we've ridden to get here. She's going to have to be the woman who carries us the rest of the way."

Collins said she wanted to be the starter, but added, "it's coach's decision. I'm not the one who has to put out a lineup every night."

Except for the last two matches, the Stars (1-3-1) have played all draws in this inaugural World Women's Hockey Championship. Their first win as a team came by a tenuous 1-0 score against Deminina. Collins had not played until the loss to Gallund.

"It's good that Collins got some experience," Fisher said. "If worse comes to worse, she's ready. But right now, I don't see us making that change."

Fisher may be solidly behind Spencer for now, but a source familiar with the coach's thinking said Spencer is on a "much shorter leash" than she would have been before the loss to Gallund.

"No question, she's ready to pull her at the first sign of trouble," said one source who asked to remain anonymous due to the fact that Fisher has not gone on record. "We're hoping that Spencer is on top of her game or we'll be seeing more of Collins."

If Fisher wants to make a move, she knows time's running out. As the 10th seed, the Stars will not be favoured in any of their remaining matches from here on out. However, that's something centre Kim Clayton said she likes.

"We've got nothing to lose and everything to gain," she said. "The pressure's not on us."

Maybe We'll Win at Women's Hockey!

Let's be honest for a moment, although the Olympics made the likes of Noémie Trévisan and Geneviève Giguère moderately famous, (the latter more for her puzzling soup commercial than anything she did on the ice) you've likely never watched our national women's hockey team. We're a hockey loving nation- we get some excited for the CHL, we swell with patriotism when the men play in the World Cup or Olympics, and we even are all about the juniors if you live in a small town with nothing to do or you are super interested in prospects for the future. Yet with all this, who can have time to also follow our national women's team? Well, hopefully the answer is "everyone", because Radio-Cotdelapoms is banking on it, promising to broadcast all of Cotdelapoms' remaining matches after the team got into the final 8. Theoretically, defeating Auremena in the quarter-finals would mean they are guaranteed to do as well or better as their male counterparts in the recent World Cup, and they were hailed as heroes despite ending the tournament by losing two straight games.

Our opponents in the quarter-final round are Auremena, who finished second in their group on a better record than we did. We do not know much about the team from Auremena- their entry into the World Cup of Hockey was not a particularly strong group, although their women are clearly better. As far as we can tell, the Auremena team are mostly made up of cartoons, which theoretically should have a major disadvantage in not being real people, but apparently were better than North Chicanan, who we thought were pretty good.

The Cotdelapomaise team trying to win the Cheryl Cup is led by Noémie Trévisan, a fast and skillful winger with a rocket of a shot. Trévisan is likely to become a major star for a week or two should we win the Cheryl Cup, which is good news for our late night talk show hosts. Trévisan is cute and charming and a hockey winner, which is a triple threat if there ever was one. If anyone could ever help the women's game grow it's her, so hopefully that's enough pressure to squash our hopes in the quarter-final round, since we all know how our national sports teams do under great pressure!

Ice Lotus Fail to Impress; Seek Chance in the Play-In

From the Republic Associated Times, 2011.07.07

With a disappointing performance in group play --- with only a single win against the second-to-last team of Krumbia, the Republic Ice Lotus seek to redeem themselves against the eighth-seeded team from Carastoga.

The tournament to date has not been very successful for the Ice Lotus; given their performance last year in the Chrysanthemum Chalice by sweeping the tournament's six teams to march through to the finals, we had expected a better outing by the ladies of the Republics. In addition to this lack-luster performance, coach Vend Skirata has shifted his lines almost every game, giving a lack of cohesion to his team. During an interview with World Cup 15th Third-Place Winner Kad Skirata, he had this to say of his brother:

It is obvious (Vend) is on the end of his rope, trying to salvage what he can of his team. Women are emotional, especially those not brought up Mando(lorian)... We both grew up in war, so we treat each game as a battle. For the men of the Ice Bisons --- many of whom are warriors in their own right --- this vantage has an advantage. However, for women, it is challenging and I think (Vend) is struggling with adapting to a... fairer... team

Kad Skirata, Head Coach, Republic Ice Bisons / Itakawai Lightning

While no word has been said from the Ice Lotus since Skirata issued his press blackout for the team in an attempt to focus the women, it can be assumed that in their game today, the lines shall be brought back to their original settings following a supposed three-hour conversation between the two Skirata brothers.
