Dam holding Radioactive Water bursts in Seculartopia! (Open)

Postby Seculartopia » Wed Nov 25, 2009 11:33 am

Several workers were running inside the concrete dam that held back the radioactive waters of the Sagan River, which had been polluted following the dropping of a Nuclear Missile on the city.

"WARNING.PRESSURE EXCEEDING MAXIMUM". The alarm blared. If something didnt happen, the dam would burst, and a torrent of radioactive water would flow down the banks, and into the large metropolitan area of Darwin, before flowing into the ocean in the Nierdon Bay, devastating ecosystems and citizens alike.

"We need to flow it into the reservoirs!" shouted the Director, grabbing a switch.

"No! That would burst the dam! Its useless, Director! We need to evacuate!" shouted a worker, picking up several items, including a radioactivity meter. "The radioactivity levels are rising in the dam. We need to leave. Now."

The Concrete foundation cracked. The metal bracing groaned and shuddered. It wouldn't hold much longer.

"We need to go!" shouted the workers, running now.

Outside, more cracks appeared, this time water gushed out.

"No!" shouted the Director, as the radiation alarms blared over the others. The Dam had failed.

And with that, the Dam burst with a massive roar, the radioactive waters sweeping through the empty banks, dragging everything in its path.

A telephone rang in the Dictator-President's office. "Hello?" Hal Newton said, picking it up.

"Sir! This is urgent- The Sagan Dam has burst!"

Hal Newton's face paled. Not Good.

"Evacuate Darwin Immediately! We need to somehow limit this river's path before it empties into the Nierdon Bay and into the open Ocean- Alliance of Grittonia waters!"

"Yes, Sir!"

Hal Newton ran to alert the Directories, and sent out communication to the international realm.

Though we cannot provide assistence within time to prevent the release of this toxic water, we can offer an urgent cleanup, including several skilled advisors to guide your nation through this difficult time. This incident threatens the ecosystem and life of much human, animal and plant life in the area, and as a knockon effect the economy of many nations surrounding, this gravely concerns us and it is for this reason we offer our assistence.

Of course, we cannot offer our services for free, this is unfortunate but a cost of our expertise, however, this price is very fair, affordable and given the need for manpower and resources this crisis will require, met within your needs.

Comrade,

The glorious working people's front offers it's hand of friendship to the people of Seculartopia. 10 000 troops are mobilised to enter Seculartopia and restore order - under the command of your own leader.

We also have a engineering force mobilsed to enter and redirect the course of the river to prevent radiation destroying any major settlements.

Subject: Prevention of Radioactive water causing damage to coastal areas.

Dear Comrade,

Whilst it is true there is not enough time to actually prevent the radioactivity from reaching Darwin, it is possible, according to our calculations, to prevent any contaminated fluid reaching the coast.

The plan is use a ready-made iron structure to create a second, if smaller, barrier down stream. In front of, behind and at both sides of this will be situated several canal ways lined with very dry soil.

A five mile arena of this complex would very easily slow the current, and if all goes to plan also halt it.

Exact coordinates and numerical figures for workers, vehicles and transport can be provided later.

The torrent of water rushed down the empty bank, sweeping away dead trees. The water was still in the radiation evacuation area from the Sagan Nuclear Bombing, but within the hour the torrent would exit, and target healthy ecosystem, and flow down to Darwin, causing havoc on the million plus city.

Darwin,Seculartopia

"Everyone, EVACUATE NOW! This is an Emergency!" the loudspeakers in the city blared. People were running, as they watched the news about the torrent racing down the Sagan River.

Directory of Scientific Analysis, Seculartopia City, Seculartopia.

"We have concluded that the failure was caused by these events" said the researcher, presenting the data to Hal Newton.

"Usually, the water behind the Sagan Dam is controlled by huge resiviors that can be pumped full of water, and adjusted as needed."

"On this day, for some reason, which we will investigate- the resivoirs werent full of the water they needed. And, this season brings lots of rain for us- so, the river level went up and up and up."

"The alarm sounds, but it is too late- the release of the water's pressure into the resivior would break the dam. Eventually, it all fails."

"And a torrent races down the bank that was the Sagan River, on an onslaught of environmental destruction."

The Researcher gulped. "This isnt good, sir. Like i said, barriers could help keep it out of certain areas."

"Indeed, ive sent crews down to areas to put up such barriers on the river we think salvageable. And Darwin's major buildings and historical sites are being sandbagged."

But he knew something told him it wouldn't be enough.....

With Seculartopian citizens crowding the streets and various different sorts of alarms going off in a language they didn't understand, the sand bagging they were ordered to do was becoming almost impossible.

We see, and we think your plan is satisfactory. As the scientific analysists have reported, certain ecosystems along the river are seeing the construction of barriers to hopefully keep as much water out as possible, and more forces will assist from us in the construction of such barriers, with the help of your forces.

Sincerely,
Hal Newton

OOC EDIT: Lets say your forces arrived, but the water has left the original radioactive evacuation zone, and is hitting barriers, with a few collapsing to the current.

In response to your question on proximity, it is in fact that case the Kyrian Republics are not 2 hours away from Seculartopia.
Secondly, your excellency, several thousands soldiers are already in Darwin under your command, meaning a large workforce is already prepared and it is only the construction materials and experts that need to be transported.

OOC: I hope I have permission to do this? If not, I'll edited it out.

30 miles down river from Darwin, men in helicopters, hovering slightly over the ground, disembarked from them in a very fast but not panicked manner. Some carried tools, others construction materials, and others, in groups, carried larger slabs of iron or concrete.

Seculartopian workers were already at the site, digging pits around the river.

At last, the 10 meter high iron wall was having it's foundations laid - as the water verged on Darwin.

With your permission I will have unarmed military construction battalions sent to do the construction as they have more expertise in that, are trained for operations in nuclear environments and are more plentiful. Our personnel will be sent on T-7 Supersonic transports and should arrive shortly. Any construction equipment you can have ready when they arrive will help greatly. During this emergency we have suspended all air travel to make the T-7 available to aid relief efforts in Seculartopia. However, our heavy transports are subsonic and will take a little longer to arrive. Please advise on any other forms of assistance needed.

Citizens of Darwin screamed as one as on the horizon, a large wall of water appeared, filling and overflowing the banks of the Sagan River.

The Wall easily destroyed the first barriers way up river, and advanced, almost hungrily, upon the downriver section and suburban Darwin.

"We need to hurry!" shouted the Seculartopian workers, and they hurriedly dug as many and as deep of pits as they could. They hoped the Kyrians would make it out in time....

OOC:There. Now, we'll wait for UK to catch up.

With seemingly impossible precision, the main structure of the wall was slipped into the concrete foundations in the river by around 20 giant helicopters.
But the wall wouldn't work if enough the pits weren't dug. Clearing out grass so the water could infiltrate more quickly was a priority for the Kyrians, but 2000 of their number were still in jeeps racing toward the site from Darwin.

It could be very close indeed.

The Seculartopian Workers rapidly began to dig as many retention basins and pits as they could, and a few joining in on clearing the grasses.

Their hope was this could slow it down at least.....

Suburban Darwin

The wall of radioactive water slammed into the residential districts outside Darwin, taking up apartment after apartment building. Luckily, it seemed like the wall's first encounter with an urban area was slowing it down. But it still rocketed through its bank, getting ever so close to the workers.

After some time, the 2nd lot of Kyrian workforce arrived.

With 3 miles of pits and ditch complexes dug already and the surrounding area completely free of grass and other vegetation, the Kyrians were hopeful that the 5 miles promised could be completed in the time they had left.
However, an engineer overseeing the implementation of the wall had some concerns over the stability of the thing when taking into account the amount of water that was going to be spraying off into the ditched area.
