You'll have to excuse me if I disagree. I've played this game since 2003. This is the most fun I've ever had playing this game (not that I didn't have fun during the ten years). I actually WANTED to play today. I kept checking the website to see how I was doing. Yeah, I was by myself, but it was wonderful to see my nation recover so quickly. I even got to help another nation needing it!

How is being the leader responding to such a crisis not NationStates? Yes, it's a fictional event, but this game is about as real as my favorite series by Terry Goodkind. I found it exciting to see how a decision and the speed at which the decision was made could affect how well a nation handled such an event. Waiting even an hour resulted in millions to billions more people either infected or dead. The whole event also allowed everyone to compare to other nations that made different decisions at different times. It showed how important it is for neighbors to cooperate in times of crisis and how well assistance extended could benefit those around. It also showed how badly the affects of shoving problems to other nations affected neighboring nations. This wasn't NationStates? You obviously haven't been here that long. This is completely NationStates. I look forward to repeat events and even spinoffs.

Yeah... Don't try to pull rank on me. I've been playing NationStates for more than three years now, so I'm not a noob. Thank you.

And this little zombie event is NOT NationStates because it's not real. Zombies aren't real. The dead do not rise and feast on the flesh of the living. It's fiction, fantasy.
And that would be fine for a different game, but not NationStates. This game, this simulator, is supposed to be based in reality. Issues and decisions that a real political leader could potentially face in reality. And, I'm sorry, zombie plagues just aren't part of that.
Now, certainly, epidemics are - influenza, bubonic plague, smallpox, etc. A lot of people die from those things. But you know what they don't do? Rise from the dead and start eating living people! Those events exist only in the realm of fantasy.
Furthermore, I govern almost all of my nations in a vaccum, and enjoy doing so. Though it's something I wouldn't mind trying out with one or two, the vast majority, I don't want to get involved with "regional activities" like this. I just want the story of the particular nation of mine to stand on its own, not be part of some region-wide narrative. And that's the charm of this website that I love - I can be a total isolationist, I don't have to get involved with other players if I don't want to. But if you all want to force things like this on us on a regular basis... It would completely change the face of this MMO, and none for the better.

Real life nations have deadly pandemics that cross borders.
Real life nations don't exist in a void.
I support peace in Israel and Palestine. The governments and people in power on all sides are an absolute disgrace, and their unwillingness to pursue peace is a disservice to the people they are meant to be serving. The status quo is not simply untenable; it is unquestionably unacceptable.

Maybe this can be done every some months, but my greatest worry is that, in the long-term, we are doing this rather too commonly, it's going to become not as interesting as it used to be.

For instance, Don't say:

Come on, bro. Show a little better situational awareness when you post.

And are you ever going to reply to that telegram I wrote you? You know, the one where I asked yout to explain that very rude comment you said to me a couple pages ago?

That was our April Fools gag last year- that Nationstates was going to become a publicly traded company, but as a special gesture to players, they got shares before the stock sale. It quickly devolved into a hilariously depraved scramble for power and shares (much like a real business stock sale!) :)

I would like it for there to be fun events like this one every few month on special events like holidays and the like. As for those who are hating on Fantasy, first SPEAK FOR YOURSELVES. Nationstates is a fantasy and a fictional multi-verse. There are simultaneously spacefaring nations, and pre-gunpowder nations. There are also straight up fantasy and and modern technology. To say that NS is Strictly based on reality is silly and utterly chauvinistic as the greater majority of NS nations don't exist in reality. They're fictional nations. Dare I say that Toiracsi Saduj exists no where but in your imagination. There is no realistic nation in modern day globalization that can shut themselves off from a global pandemic in reality. No one. So maybe you should take off your hate lens for Fantasy and take off the googly gremlin eyes and remember you are not playing realistically either and should embrace the chance for creativity and fun expression while also allowing for some opportunities for roleplaying for everyone.

I agree that monthly would be too often, requiring too much work and maybe getting boring/commonplace, but if it's not too much trouble I do think having something like this two or three times a year would be wonderful: it's such a lovely opportunity for nations to work together on a grand scale. Definitely twice a year would be nice.

Also as Spires says above, there are plenty of versions of reality floating around. For instance, in Libraria and Ausitoria the Zombies went for love bites and became aggressive against vegetable-flesh instead. Less scary. Thus we ICly pretty much ignored it.

Nonetheless, maybe we could let bored/boring people opt out?

The biggest reason I play this game instead of the other nation simulators is that it doesn't require constant upkeep.

I can get sick or take a vacation for a week or go to work every day and my country won't go down the shitter while I'm gone

Even though I knew it was April 1st, I was rather disappointed to get home from work to find over 90% of my population gone in less than one day
