Ruridova wrote:Quick note: the main criterion I'm looking at to see which RL American politicians are ATL Confederate politicians is whether the state they were born in is a Confederate state, not the state they became a famous politician in.

Good examples: Rick Santorum and Elizabeth Warren rose to prominence representing the states of Pennsylvania and Massachusetts, but were born in Virginia and Oklahoma, and are thus listed as Confederate. There are presently two exceptions that I've made to this rule- Ted Cruz because he was born in Canada already and his parents wouldn't be fleeing Fidel because ATL Fidel is a baseball star, and Hillary Clinton because it would be a bit odd for the wife of a Confederate president to be a Canadian politician.

This does mean I've dropped my claims to the Kennedeys(Massachusetts), the Bushes(Connecticut, though Jeb was born in Texas so that might be something to discuss), and Obama(born in Hawaii).

On a largely unrelated note, congratulations, Unicario, if Japanese Long Island is still a thing, because you are now the proud ATL owner of Bernie Sanders(born in Brooklyn) and the not-so-proud owner of Donald Trump(born in Queens). May your politics be ever-interesting.

Are you sure you want to give up Obama? I was willing to let him stay yours; particularly considering his mother is still American; he'd just be a dual citizen.

You can have him. Given that his college education was in New York City, and his political career was in Chicago, if he's coming to North America he's probably going to be a Canadian politician.

Bernard Sanders is a Amerikanjin elder statesman, and served as the President of the Provisional Council of the Japanese People during and following the 1980-1981 Rose Revolution. He served as Japanese Chancellor from 1981 to 1990.

John MacLeod is an Amerikanjin politician and businessman, and served as Chancellor of Japan from 1999 to 2008 as a member of the Social Democratic party. He is the owner of MacLeod Company, and owns things such as MacLeod Tower, and MacLeod Plaza, etc.

Barack Obama Jr. will either be Governor of Hawaii, or he'll be one of the Presidents of Kenya (depending on if Shrill still wants the Kenya mandate after China's defeat.)

I suppose without the Kuomintang around (since they'd be excluded from the Chinese Revolution), more bloodthirsty folk could come to power.

True, though the Emperor was probably forced by Japan to abdicate and dissolve the Empire and replace it with a Republic. Sun Yat-sen could have written the constitution, and Yuan Shikai became the first President...

Didn't end well.

Empire in the Sea of Time

1942

Reports coming all across the Allied lines in Asia and Europe reported a vast spectacle of lights around the Japanese Empire's borders; and many wondered what it meant, this strange event. When the lights finally faded, the United States, China and other Allied powers, as well as Japanese units outside of the realm these lights had ensconced, were significantly confused.

The first reports of this came when a convoy of Chinese prisoners attempted to enter the Hebei province en route to a prison camp in Manchukuo. At a standard military checkpoint south of Beijing, the truck was stopped by a group of men wearing uniforms and bearing insignia significantly different. The Japanese officers driving the truck got into a confrontation with the border guard after he refused to let them through. The officer threw his military ID at the border guard and loudly shouted, "This is outrageous! I am under orders from the Kwangtung Army personally to deliver these prisoners to a work camp in Manchukuo! Let me through!"

The border guard raised his eyebrow, "Kwangtung Army? Impossible, that hasn't existed since the Traitorious February Coup attempt some six years ago..." He squinted at the ID, "This ID is fake anyway; improper insignia, hell, your military uniform isn't even proper issue."

This situation escalated after a Japanese naval carrier encountered a ship bearing the Five Races Under One Union flag -- assuming this was a Chinese carrier, it fired at it; and was quickly sunk in response by another naval power. This occurred all across Asia, while the Eastern Pacific remained quiet -- the United States Navy, Air Force and other branches were having difficulty picking up on why so many of their soldiers had gone quiet, and why communications to Asia were effectively severed. A USN taskforce sojourned to Pearl Harbor to survey why Hawaii was out of contact, and was shocked to find that the entirety of Oahu and other islands looked like they had been ripped out of a textbook portrait of Japan. The USN taskforce found itself squaring off with a taskforce bearing this unknown five-colour banner.

Flying in from New Caledonia, William Halsey, Jr. came face to face with a cordial Admiral named Ishiro Miyamoto. Admiral Miyamoto and Admiral Halsey met and Halsey attempted to bring a translator with him, but Miyamoto waved the translator off, and replied in a friendly British accent, "I believe we will not need translators, Admiral. I am more than proficient in English."

Admiral Halsey raised an eyebrow and gave a nod, and the two began to exchange information on the event. The Japanese admiral didn't think much of the lights. "The Confederates like to frequently play games with their weapons, and so we're pretty used to strange anomalies... it's all part of the job this far east."

The two chatted amicably and Halsey formulated the idea that this Empire of Japan was a significantly different one that the United States had been fighting since 1941; this officer seemed cordial, polite, and not psychopathic like the Japanese leadership Halsey knew; furthermore, the naval armaments the Japanese bore looked strikingly like the Royal Navy, just significantly more dangerous and precise in their design.

While Halsey discussed the world with the Japanese Admiral, things in the United States were getting interesting.

Ojashi, Japanese America

Corporal Harold Takahashi was, by and large, concerned as to why suddenly there was an armed militia on Manhattan Island trying to brute-force their way across Turtle Bridge; and why they looked more like Confederates and not Canadians also worried him -- did the Confederates invade Canada again? Were they at war with Japan? Communications with the motherland had ceased, and Ojashi was getting a bit desperate. Fortunately, an IJN taskforce had been nearby and provided quick support, breaking the armed assault, and decimating the bridge, severing Manhattan from Long Island.

The Governor of Ojashi, Tetsuo Ishigawa, came into contact with a State Department representative, and in similar steps with Halsey, a massive amount of confusion had arose over the situation. The Japanese demonstrated lengthy documentation of their own history, and that they had been occupying this region for over 100 years, and had leased the land in perpetuity from the Dominion of Canada -- the State Department seemed curt and expected the Japanese to just hand over the territory full-force and to be thankful the USAF didn't drop bombs all over Long Island.

Tetsuo sneered some at the blunt language used by the State Department, and said, "The Confederate States," the representative corrected him with a strained voice, "UNITED States, Governor."

"Whatever, the United States, can't do any better at breaking our control of Long Island than the Confederates have; we're a very defensive people."

"The United States has already issued our demands to Japan; unconditional surrender, which includes all occupied territory; you've occupied Long Island."

"Long Island has been under Japanese jurisdiction, and in the parameters of the United Nations Statement On Self-Governance since the end of the American Rebellion. We reject your sovereignty over this land."

The State Department representative stormed out of the meeting, and soon, word spread up the vine from Admiral Halsey that these "Five Bar" Japanese were completely different than the ones they had been fighting since 1941. There was grumblings through out the U.S. Government over the sudden loss of Long Island, but the Americans had to admit -- occupying, integrating and assimilating the area would be... difficult.

President Roosevelt simply advised that the area be watched for military buildup, and that they work to a diplomatic solution with the new Japan; and to gauge their threat to the United States.

Back in Asia, the Japanese government soon realized the situation at hand. In one of the offices of the Imperial Palace, the Cabinet had assembled in an emergency session, waiting for the Chancellor and the Empress. The wooden doors swung open as William Jiang, the incumbent Kuomintang Chancellor, and Empress Masako entered the room. The Cabinet stood in respect for their sovereign, and took their seats once the Empress and Chancellor were seated opposite each other.

The Empress spoke, folding her hands, "Good morning, everyone. I'm pleased you all got here on such short-notice... as you can tell, Japan is a sticky situation compared to last night. Our long-time... frenemies, the Confederate States, has been replaced by a much stronger global power called the United States of America; the state that the Honorable Jefferson, Adams and Franklin tried to forge in their own way... it is a peculiar situation, is it not?"

The Chancellor gave a brief nod, "The situation in China is much like it is in our universe, but far worse... it seems, according to the statements taken from a group of Chinese prisoners of war we freed from captivity, that China has multiple warlords competing for power; the central government is lead by the Kuomintang... under Chiang Kai-shek."

General Ishida, the Defense Minister spoke up, "Isn't that your name and party, sir?"

"It is. It seems in this timeline, myself, James Sun and other Chinese, were never deported from China, or never fled; and thus, China fell to our original republican aims before we resigned ourselves to be a force in Japanese politics... it shall be strange meeting myself."

"Strange, indeed, Chancellor Jiang... we also have learned that large swaths of China, save for our occupation ports in the Hebei, Tianjin, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Guangzhou, are all under Japanese occupation; but a different Japan, one far more concerned with bloodlust, rape and destruction than peace, prosperity and Asian fraternity..." She frowned, "If you'll turn your packets to page 101, you'll see the reports on the Rape of Nanking, taken from Chinese and Japanese soldiers we've captured in the skirmishes."

The Cabinet turned pale for a brief moment before the Empress stated, "This cannot be permitted; we must commit to an expedition into China, and do what we can to prevent Japanese domination in China. I want us to meet immediately with the representatives of the Kuomintang, and the Communist Party."

"Will they talk to us?" Hideyoshi Adams, the Foreign Minister, asked with a confused look, "I mean, we are Japan, and we still occupy Manchuria, as the original Japanese did."

"Yes, but we're not propping up the former Emperor of China as a figurehead, and raping the land with opium trade and biological experiments; we at least have the decency to treat our Koreans and Manchus like human beings and citizens."

"Fair point."

"Minister Adams, I intend for you to meet with President Franklin Roosevelt of this... United States; and to seek amicable relations; I shall dispatch James Sun; he's still got some fight left in him, and I'm sure the image of the founder of the Republic of China coming to visit will make Chiang and Mao, and their cadres, more acceptable to terms of peace."

The cabinet murmured, and agreed.

Washington D.C.
A week later

The arrival of Hideyoshi Adams was a quiet, silent affair. The plane, bearing the insignia of the IJAF (which looked nothing like the IJAF that Roosevelt had seen in reports), had landed at a military airstrip, and the Foreign Minister had been whisked to Washington to meet with the President.

The descendant of one of America's founding fathers soon sat before Roosevelt in the Oval Office, the two locked in a silent battle. President Roosevelt broke the silence by beginning, "So, I understand that there is some sort of strangeness going on; my advisors tell me your Japan is significantly different than the one that attacked us last year."

The Foreign Minister gave a brief nod, and drew out a folder. "The Empire of Japan has been a continuous expanding state since 1331, and we have been allies with the British Empire since 1754, under the reign of Empress Meiji." He handed the folder over to President Roosevelt, and said, "This should contain relevant information to our state of affairs as of our own 1942."

Roosevelt looked at the papers in front of him. "The Confederate States of America, eh? Hmm... attacked Japanese Hawaii on December 7, 1891; Emperor Alexander gave a speech..." FDR raised an eyebrow, "This speech is almost verbatim the one I gave to Congress last December."

"Yes, sir, I've heard such things. Perhaps it is coincidental... or celestial fate."

"Confederacy waged war across Pacific... Meiji Islands campaign -- er, Meiji Islands?"

"We believe you call them... Las Filipinas?"

"The Philippines! Ah, yes, quite." The President continued, "Tonkin, Hue... hmm, general defeat, rolled over China in no time at all... peculiar. And you say this is World War I?"

"Yes, World War II was an entirely different conflict, particularly over the disputed territory in Hawaii."

The President nodded, and continued to read the papers in front of him, before setting them down, and rubbing his eyes. "These are strange times, I must admit. The American public will not likely see the difference between you and your more militant equivalents... but I can see legitimate cause for peace in your words, and your statements; this Japan wants no war with anyone, which is a respectable goal."

The Foreign Minister gave a nod, "My government has authorized me to lay out some cordial terms to you, your Excellency." He drew out another folder. "The Empire of Japan and United States of America shall acknowledge that there has always been a status of peace between them as the Empire of Japan constitutes a state that does not exist in your universe, and thereby replaces the Greater Japanese Empire... in exchange for acceptance of peace, the Empire of Japan shall formally issue declarations of war against the German Reich, and Kingdom of Italy, and join the Allied Powers in their struggle against the militant right-wingers who threaten society... or something to this end."

FDR looked seriously at the Foreign Minister, "You're offering to join the war on our side?"

"We believe that the madmen in Berlin and Rome must certainly be stopped, Mister President, and we are most concerned about the enigmatic man in Moscow, his armies are making maneuvers, and we believe it will be troublesome for them should they prod our defenses in Manchukuo."

Franklin Roosevelt nodded, and thanked the Foreign Minister. Within a matter of a few weeks, the United States pulled back on embargoes and other means, and recognized the new Empire of Japan. The following day, Empress Masako attended a session of the Parliament, and requested a declaration of war on Germany and Italy; which was approved unanimously. Even the Syndicalist "Imperial Syndicate" approved the motion, decrying the Italian and German fascist regimes as "desperate grasps at nationalism by dying Empires", and thus, Japan committed the Prosperity Sphere to the war.

Similar resolutions went through the Korean, Manchurian, and Indochinese parliaments without objection. Japan's colonies of Ethiopia and Mozambique began to prepare for operations against the Axis powers effective immediately; and the Treaty Ports in the Raj quickly made deals with Britain to maintain their current status.

The Empire of the Sun had come to this world, and they were about to mess some shit up.

Chiang Kai-shek is leader of the Kuomintang in 1942 => William Jiang is the Chancellor of Japan in 1942.
Sun Yat-Sen was the first President of China (1912) => James Sun is a former Chancellor of Japan, and is an old man, and a diplomat.
Wang Jingwei is a collaborationist leader of China-Nanjing in 1942. => Alexander Wang is the Governor of the Hebei Mandate (Beijing/Tianjin/that area).
Isoroku Yamamoto is an IJN Admiral about to engage against the USN in Guadacanal in the coming weeks => Isoroku Yamamoto is a former Chancellor, and an Admiral in charge of the Home Fleet.

Boji, for the Ukraine, you forgot Crimean Tatar, since IIRC, Crimea's going to you.

End of World War II (1919) -- latest map. I changed the colour palette significantly, many nations now have different colours. I also have made a differentiation between Canada, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and the British Raj, from the UK + immediate colonies. As well, I have coloured Tibet and Mongolia as "vassal states" of the Raj and Russia respectively; this is done to free up any colors for future nations.

Also: TVTropes.

Perhaps after the funeral, a time skip to 1900 would be in order?

That's fine with me...or we could just do it now, it's already May and the funerals should be well done by now.

World War II will be one of the most confusing wars ever. Have you guys seen the alliance blocs?

Quadruple Entente (Fascists; anti-German)
Mitteleuropa (Germany + her sphere of influence)
Greater East-Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere (Japan + her dominions/sphere of influence - Tawantinsuyu and Rum as well)
Commonwealth Realms (Britain + her dominions and sphere of influence)
Intermarium (Czechoslovakia/Poland/Baltics/etc; anti-German)
Unnamed Sino-Confederate Alliance (anti-Japanese)
The Tripartite of Liberty (anti-Confederate alliance between Tawantinsuyu, Venezuela and Guyane)

There's always the question of where the Dutch are gonna go; They aren't guaranteed to align with much of anybody; they're pinned between the Commonwealth Realms, the Entente, and the Mitteleuropa powers. There's no real "exit strategy" for the Dutch besides neutrality.

There's also the Russians who are a wildcard; they currently have no fealty to any power bloc, but they're certainly a strong-ass wildcard.

There's always the question of where the United Republics of Centroamerica, Venezuela, Nigeria, among other places, all fall in the alliance system.

Well, ultimately it'll boil down to two superblocs like the First War, yet it will be caused by the actions of a single nations like the second.

I'm not sure that's a guarantee. Nations like Japan, who have little stake in the European feud between Germany and the fascists, may abstain from declaring war on the Quadruple Entente unless treaties are invoked (see: the Entente attacking the British Empire). Japan has no quarrel with the fascists, and has no reason to declare war unless Britain invokes the clauses in the alliance treaties they've signed since the dark ages.

We're shaping up for it to be something like:

Entente + Intermarium + Sino-Confederates vs. GEACPS + Commonwealth Realms + Mitteleuropa + Tripartite of Liberty + ???.

I'm really not sure what to do with Brazil. Brazil strongly dislikes the nations in the Tripartite of Liberty(which have taken or tried to take Brazilian land), and they like the Confederacy, but I'm not sure if they're sufficiently tied in with the alliance network to get involved.

Tawantinsuyu certainly doesn't care much about Brazil at this stage.

Guyane would not, unless if Brazil tries to retake the parts of Amapa that Guyane acquired.

Since Amapa's capital OTL Macapa probably falls under Guyanese control, I might rename it to "Ville des Dames", or the City of the Ladies in reference to the mythological Amazons, and would probably be the second largest city in the country after Pichegru, and ahead of Georgetown/Ville de Guerrier Marat.

And now, I have an urge to at some point do something with the Peoples Temple. Maybe it could be a radical sect of the Temple of Reason...
