It's why I changed mine, yes.

Put Scotland's Future in Scotland's Hands - Vote Yes

Related to the referendum, here's a referendum-special Trendsmap of the UK and Ireland. Basically, Trendsmap looks at hashtags to see which are the biggest and where. In the case of the referendum, they're looking at #voteyes, #yesscotland, #voteyesscotland, #voteno, #bettertogether, and #nothanks.

Link

It's kinda funny, actually.
Scotland: "Yes, overwhelmingly yes! Scots unthirldom/Neo-eisimeileachd na h-Alba!"
Northern Ireland: "Yes, why not?"
Ireland: "Yes, yes! Join us in independence!"
Wales: "Yes, I guess."
Cornwall: "I totally agree with the no campaign. 100 percent. Seriously. I swear. Trust me."
England: "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

If Scotland votes yes OTL, can we have ATL Scotland institute a monarchy under a descendant of Prince James of Japan? That'd be fun. :P

A Stuart? Jacobite, presumably?

I'm fully in favor. Because the present Jacobite pretender OTL(and presumably ATL) is a certain Franz Wittelsbach. And ATL, this Franz Wittelsbach is King Franz I of Bavaria, meaning his coronation as King of Scotland bring Scotland firmly into the German sphere.

Schottland über alles, bitches.

EDIT: No, you mean some Japanese guy. Why would it be given to some Japanese guy? Franz Wittelsbach has the blood of Stuart kings.

IDK, it was just a suggestion. Anyway, I doubt a newly independent Scotland would subsume itself to Germany anyway -- they'd probably go Republic or elect a Scottish native/nobleman.

Yes, but he's also King of Bavaria. They probably wouldn't want to trade one master (England) for another (Germany/Bavaria)

In theory, he could abdicate Bavaria to his brother and take Scotland for himself.

In that case, then yes, I don't see the Scots having a problem with a Wittelsbach King.

Then again, Scotland isn't exactly Catholic -- I don't know if they'd want a Catholic King.

Unicario wrote:Side note: I discovered that until the late 20th/early 21st century, several hereditary titles were given seats on the House of Lords, including the Duke of Gloucester -- this means that the Emperor of Japan is a member of the House of Lords. :P

Since the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the Lords Temporal have been the most numerous group in the House of Lords. Unlike the Lords Spiritual, they may be publicly partisan, aligning themselves with one or another of the political parties that dominate the House of Commons. Publicly non-partisan Lords are called crossbenchers. Originally, the Lords Temporal included several hundred hereditary peers (that is, those whose peerages may be inherited), who ranked variously as dukes, marquesses, earls, viscounts, and barons (as well as Scottish Lords of Parliament). Such hereditary dignities can be created by the Crown; in modern times this is done on the advice of the Prime Minister of the day (except in the case of members of the Royal Family).

In 1999, the Labour government brought forward the House of Lords Act removing the right of several hundred hereditary peers to sit in the House. The Act provided a temporary measure that only 92 individuals may continue to sit in the Upper House by virtue of hereditary peerages.

Of these, two remain in the House of Lords because they hold royal offices connected with Parliament: the Earl Marshal and the Lord Great Chamberlain. Of the remaining 90 members of the House of Lords sitting by virtue of a hereditary peerage in the House of Lords, 14 are elected by the whole House and 74 are chosen by fellow hereditary peers in the House of Lords, grouped by party. This Act, included the Principality of Wales and the Earldom of Chester and removed all Royal Peers including the Duke of Edinburgh, Duke of York, Earl of Wessex, Duke of Gloucester and the Duke of Kent.

So, by this merit, Emperor Alexander I, Empress Elizabeth, Emperor Alexander II and Empress Akane shall all be sitting members of the British House of Lords operating by proxy of the family of Alexander's brother, Prince James, and his descendants, who sit as their retainers. Empress Akane's right to sit in the House of Lords would be revoked in 1999 by the Labour government, and the title would be mostly just a status symbol, that passes on to Noriko in 2008.

You mean during the peer reduction? Yeah, I can do that.

And I've learned one of three things:
Either that people aren't the only things that can stay in loveless marriages,
Or that people aren't the only things that can develop Stockholm Syndrome,
Or that a very large number of Scots are political sadomasochists.

I'm not sure which, though.

By the way guys... I call dibs on the Money and ethnic votes speech for the 1995 Toliarian Independence Referendum following the defeat of the "oui" side at 49.42% to 50.58% saying "沒了" (no).

Yes, the Premier of Toliara, probably Luc Bousquet will say «C'est vrai, c'est vrai qu'on a été battus, au fond, par quoi? Par l'argent puis des votes ethniques, essentiellement».

Now, how to galvanize the Toliarois sovereigntist movement... perhaps Ruri, a Quebecois PM visits Tulear while planning to visit the island, does the "Vive le Toliara libre!" shtick, and yeah.

Thanks. Basically, my plan is that Madagascar would be a bit like OTL Canada except more influenced by Chinese culture, some of the not!OTL Quebec by Quebecois and Guyanese culture, maybe French culture, with a hint of Afrikaner culture, and without Stephen Harper.

Oh, and for some reason, the Sinophones seem to love Canada very much (the Francophones love Quebec), to such an extent that many Canadian businesses have made their way here, as well as ice hockey (they have a junior league with 16 teams, as well as plans for a professional league, though nobody knows when it begins). You can even get CBC here on the basic cable package (and satellite: 95% of households with a television have either cable or satellite).

Yeah. I think stereotypical Malagasy basically fangirl Canadians and seek to emulate them, while living in a cohousing community (hafengs) and speak Chinese and/or French, or at least English with a distinctive accent.

My first attempt at an AWWAball comic of any real length or complexity:
http://i.imgur.com/FQhWP8H.png

The words in the panels are the lyrics to the song For What It's Worth, a protest song written in 1969 by Stephen Stills(of Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, & Nash). The song is variously considered a protest against restrictions on civil liberties, police brutality, waging war, and various other items. The band, however, says that it is in reference to the Sunset Strip Riots of the 1960s and 1970s, a series of counterculture clashes between left-wing youth and police over curfew laws in Los Angeles. The song peaked at number 7 on the Billboard 100, and was listed by the Rolling Stone as the 63rd best song of all time in 2004.

Original version by the OTL American-Canadian/ATL Americaner-Canadian band Buffalo Springfield.
Cover version by the OTL Canadian/ATL Canadian band Rush.
Cover version by the OTL American/ATL Americaner singer Cher.
Cover version by the OTL American/ATL Americaner band Girl in a Coma.

PANEL ONE: Kamerun(one of Africa's stabler nations ATL) is confused by something going on offscreen(presumably one of Africa's less stable countries).
PANEL TWO: The DR Congo, holding an AK-47; Congolese communist rebels, holding a grenade; the secessionist state of Katanga; the secessionist state of South Kasai; pro-Authentizität rebels, holding a pistol; the secessionist state of Ituri; Gabonese secessionists; miscellaneous ethnic rebels in the Congo, holding a German 'potato masher' grenade.
PANEL THREE: The HRE and USSR pitting their allies/puppets of Hungary and Czechoslovakia against each other in the various escalations of the Central European Conflict.
PANEL FOUR: Republican and Imperial Russia are both assholes whose respect for freedom can be questionable at times.
PANEL FIVE: The older, conservative generation of Japanese(represented by the Rising Sun) and the younger, liberal generation(represented by the Five Races Under One Union) square off against each other during the 1979 Rose Revolution.
PANEL SIX: Jiaozhou resists attempts by its significantly larger neighbor of China to become a Chinese imperial territory.
PANEL SEVEN: A civil rights protester in the 1960's CSA faces off against a police officer armed with a billyclub.
PANEL EIGHT: A Toliarois secessionist in Madagascar holds up a protest sign.
PANEL NINE: Black Africans in South Africa and Namibia protest against the policies of apartheid and getrenntheit.
PANEL TEN: A Tanganyikan stranded in Zanzibar is afraid he'll be discovered by the Zanzibarian government(this will become an issue in the 1970s, when a Tanganyikan plane crashes in Zanzibar and the survivors try to stay hidden instead of being found).
PANEL ELEVEN: A member of the Caucasian National Security Force prepares to assassinate some random Caucasian who the government decided was acting suspiciously and thus might be a traitor.
