They don't fire unless FCS gives the order that the shot is clear and lined up. Cheating but the ship is mostly A.I controlled so human error isn't a factor. The ship when facing dead on is supposed to act like a huge Void Ray from starcraft 2 so it's deadly head on and from the broadside.
