Total Personnel: 516,000 Active, 12,000,000 Reserve

The Armed Forces of the Crown are the armed forces of the Kingdom of Helissa. They consist of three core branches (Royal Army, Royal Army Air Force, and the Royal Navy), numerous branches of House Armed Forces, a branch of Royal Ready Reservists, a branch of Royal Guard, and the Royal Coast Guard. The Armed Forces fall under the Ministry of War, and Interior depending on the branch, they are commanded by the Lord's Council, and their commander and chief is the monarch of Helissa.

Historically the Armed Forces of the Crown have been tasked with the defense of the small realm which until recent history was a city state. Numerous Knights and Lords would lead their groups of armies to battle in ways much like that of the Dark Ages, either on horseback or on foot with the rest of the men. It has been only until recently that the modernization of the Helissan Armed Forces has taken place at the hands of King Nikifor Ivan Donovan the II who has reached out to the outside world to ask for assistance in the training and modernization of its fighting force. Nations like the Russian Union State took part in the training and arming of the Armed Forces as a build up began during a time of expansion for the Kingdom. Now a more capable fighting force has been made to represent the Kingdom of Helissa.

Unit Specialties and Types:

Different units within the Armed Forces of the Crown are categorized into types of units and have several different specialties. Bellow is a list of types of units and a brief description:

(M)= Militia: This type of unit is a irregular type of soldier group that is made up of reservists that do not professionally act as soldiers, only when called upon to supplement normal forces. They are not as highly trained as regulars but still get basic soldier skills. Their pay is also less than a regular.

(R)= Regulars: These types of units are members of the regular Armed Forces of the Crown. Professional soldiers that live on military installations and while not at war train for conflict. Their training is day in and out and they receive a significant amount of pay.

(E)= Elites: These are a special type over regular professional soldiers that are the highest preforming and most trained available. They are the fiercest of soldiers and are the most deadly on the battlefield.

(SF)= Special Forces: Masters of a-symmetrical warfare they are operators who conduct their operations behind the normal lines of war. The most trained out of any forces in the AFoTC and receive some of the highest pay.

Specialties are sorted into different categories of training that include the type of entrance onto the battlefield or their environmental specialty.

(PT) Paratrooper: Specialty given to those units who are trained and experienced in dropping via parachute to the battlefield. Some of the most elite soldiers in the Armed Forces of the Crown.
(AA) Air Assault: Given to those units who specialize in assault from helicopters and repelling from those aircraft.
(SAP) Sapper: Most elite combat engineers out there, specialize in explosives.
(REC) Recon: Units that specialize in reconnaissance of enemy positions and stealthy movement.
(AT) Anti-Terrorism: Specialty in rooting out insurgency and countering a-symmetrical operations.
(AMP) Amphibious: Specialize in amphibious landings on beach heads or rivers.

Royal Army

Total Personnel: 289,000

The Royal Army is the premiere ground force of the Armed Forces of the Crown. It came into being at the formation of the Kingdom of Helissa and its near nine hundred year history has been of full service to the King and the realm's defense. It incorporates all forces loyal to the Crown alone and those who swear and oath to the King's service. It is managed by the Ministry of War.

The Royal Army is the full active duty force used by the King. As opposed to the King's Royal Ready Reserve which is its reserve counterpart but considered a different branch for management purposes. The Royal Army itself consists of active duty soldiers from many different ethnic backgrounds. Some units have been integrated between whites and Berbers by order of King Nikifor the II but the long standing Berber Milita is still in existence and used regularly.

The Royal Army has taken part in many conflicts mostly in Northern Africa in defense of the Realm. Most of these have been actions against the Berbers but recently the conflict against the Republic of Grayson have they fought another full fledged nation.

Recent efforts by King Nikifor and his Lord's council have been taken to modernize the older than average Royal Army but the structure as a whole still operates some of the oldest equipment and uses some of the most out dated tactics in the world. A strong effort to bring in foreign training and advising from states such as the Russian Union State, Empire of Apilonia, and the Kingdom of Holland has allowed for faster modernization.

Personnel:

The soldiers of the Royal Army consist of a variety of different people from different backgrounds. A majority (65%) of these soldiers are white males from the Kingdom of Helissa who were conscripted at the age of eighteen as part of the Duty to the Realm Decree which requires that all males at the age of eighteen serve 8 months in service to the crown in a assigned military branch in the Royal Army then after service obligation be assigned to the KRRR until the age of forty. The largest minority of soldiers consists of Berbers who have enlisted as part of the Berber Militia that conducts many operations in the Sahara. Females are completely absent from any military service as they are not allowed to join the profession of arms for decency purposes. The next minority of personnel are whites from Helissa who have voluntarily enlisted in the Royal Army and therefor consist of the professional element of the Army. These volunteers are mostly white males from richer or noble families that are then commissioned as officers in the King's Army to gain prestige.

Branches of the Royal Army:

Yeomen's Corps: Tasked with day to day administrative and human resource work of the Royal Army. They preform the office duties of the Army and are tasked with the personnel regulations.

Artillery Corps: Managers of large pieces of field artillery that are used for fire support and sieges of cities. Most recently with modernization efforts they have begun to integrate some Air Defense into their duties.

Cavalry Corps: These are the spearhead of the Royal Armies ground tasking. They ride into battle and charge down their enemies. Many cav units still ride horses and camels as cavalry has since the beginning of its existence. Modernization has brought to the cavalry tanks, armored personnel carriers, and other armored pieces of equipment.

Aviation Corps: The newest and youngest branch of the Royal Army. The first generation soldiers of this branch are trained mostly by foreign advisers. They fly some of the first aircraft the Royal Army has ever handled.

Band Corps: Musicians who play for the King and other special events. One of the most prestigious bands in the Realm.

Civil Affair Corps: Another new branch that was created on the advisement of foreign advisers to handle interfacing with local population in a war zone.

Engineer Corps: These soldiers build and fight and are tasked with both making things of war and tearing them down. They are experts at fortifications both building and demolishing.

Financial Corps: Crunchers of numbers and keepers of the books they manage the Royal Army's finances.

Infantry Corps: The ground pounders in the Royal Army. They are the foot soldiers of the King and are trained in infantry tactics both rural and urban.

JAG Corps: Tasked with the legal and regulation side of the Army house. They advise commanders on their military law powers and handle judicial cases of servicemen.

Logistics Corps: Responsible for quartermaster functions, transportation functions, and the handling of munitions.

Medical Corps: Doctors who chose to join the Royal Army to take care of soldiers in the King's service. They handle everything from dental to veterinarian services.

Army Intelligence Corps: The eyes and ears of the Royal Army. Gathering both strategic and battlefield intelligence for use by commanders.

Military Police Corps: Tasked with policing of soldiers and assisting local police with operations.

Signal Corps: Tasked with the communications of both battlefield and training army units. Communications such as radio, telephone and cyber are used by the Royal Army.

    Special Forces Corps:
Another new branch that handles asymmetrical warfare within the Royal Army. They are the best of the best and operate behind lines to do the King's will.

Chaplin Corps: These are the religious assistants to the military. While all Chaplin Corps personnel are of the Helissan Orthodox faith they also serve the purpose of life councilors as well.

Equipment:

Artillery: Field Howitzers in the Artillery Corps are largely outdated by modern standards. Guns like the 76 mm regimental gun M1943, and the 122 mm howitzer M1938 are still in service. Recently the Corps has attained more modern pieces like the 152 mm howitzer 2A65, and the G7 howitzer. Of the self propelled howitzers the Corps has recent acquired through foreign donations the 2S7 Pion is the mainstay. Pre-Modernization Air Defense Artillery that the Corps has are the ZPU-4 and the ZU-23-2. Post modernization equipment includes ZSU-57-2, 2K12 Kub, 2K11 Krug, and the S-200 Angara/Vega/Dubna. The Artillery Corps also employ's BM-21 Grad, and BM-27 Uragan rocket artillery.

Infantry: The foot soldiers of the Royal Army did not escape the low budget equipment of pre-modernization however they are receiving more more modern equipment as of late from foreign suppliers. The mainstay battle weapon of the Royal Army has been upgraded to the new QM1A1 Grinderthat replaces all the FN FAL's and AN-94's in service. The standard sidearm for soldiers issued one is the Walther P99. For close quarters the Mossberg Maverick. For long range targeting several different sniper rifles are in service such as the Dragunov SVD, KSVK 12.7, and the Mauser M59. When it comes to anti armor several different ATM's are used by the Royal Army: 9M113 Konkurs, RPG-29, RPG-26 and the 9K111 Fagot. For light anti air capability the infantry use the 9K38 Igla. For mortars the Hirtenberger M6C-210 is used. Vektor SS-77, DShK

Transportation: Transportation and logistics is a part of the Royal Army that until modernization was lacking the capability of a modern fighting force. Before more modern equipment was introduced horses and camels were the modes of transportation. In the past fifty years more transportation equipment has appeared in the Royal Army including Range Rover Sport, and the Volkswagen Amarok. Most recently through international donations more modern means of logistics have been added: Land Rover 101 Forward Control, The Nubalus Type 1: Cataphract, GAZ-66, Iveco ACTL, and the Mungo ESK.

Armor: In the evolution of the Army armor units are a recent addition. The Cavarly Corps of the Royal Army employ's several different main battle tank platforms: T-62M, T-64B, and the T-72B. To carry its dragoons the Calvary Corps employ's the BMP-1, BTR-70, and the BMD-3 for airborne operations. For reconnaissance the BRDM-2is used.

Aviation: Being one of the youngest branches in the Royal Army the Aviation Corps has benefited the most from foreign donations being almost non-existent prior to the addition of the aviation corps. The hard striking arm of the aviation corps comes in its Mi-24D, Mi-24VM, and Mil Mi-28 attack helicopters. The forward recon arm of the corps uses the Kamov Ka-50 for heavier operations, and the lighter MBB Bo 105. The Corps also uses the fixed wing Cessna 172 for scouting. Air transportation are dictated to the Mil Mi-2, Mil Mi-17, and the Mil Mi-26. Executive transportation falls to theEurocopter EC155, and the Airbus A310.

Royal Army Air Force

Total Personnel: 66,000

The Royal Army Air Force is the aerial warfare branch of the Armed Forces of the Crown. It is the youngest of the services and has the smallest number of personnel out of any of the active duty services.

While the Helissan Army Air Force is not the most advanced in the world it is one of the youngest. It's new air frames provide for a capable fighting force that can forward project air power over its lands and the battlefield.

The Air Force has been in a constant build up of its forces as it tries to consolidate both Russian and European equipment into a capable flexible fighting force. Many air frames are operated by the Army Air Force and this causes extra time and money to train its pilots and techs. Some of the equipment used by the Air Force was given by the Russian Union state while others were salvaged in Libya from the Kilevan Air Force's remainders.

Personnel:

The Army Air Force recruits from the finest of Helissan youth. While it does not receive many personnel from the draft (only 10% of those conscripted are assigned Air Force) it still has a foundation of youthful soldiers to fill its ranks. Over 90% of personnel in the Royal Army Air Force (RAAF) are white Helissans put into more technical jobs and highers positions while 9% are Helissan Berbers who are assigned to security, labor, and other duties. Most Berbers opt to fulfill their obligation in the Berber Milita so the RAAF does not see many of those recruits. On request for duty assignment the RAAF is often the #1 pick by recruits as its assignments are often the most coveted.

Reconnaissance: An important mission for the RAAF recon has been one of the most heavily developed of the missions the RAAF is tasked with. Its platforms consist of several air frames and some new drones the RAAF is now equipped with. For maritime patrol the Breguet Atlantic is used. For other types of patrols the Cessna 172 is employed. Royal Marine

Total Personnel: 50,000

The Royal Marine is the Armed Forces of the Crown's naval arm that operates in Helissan coastal waters and the Mediterranean sea. It originated with the beginning of the Kingdom of Helissa all the way back in 1134 when the first Kings of Helissa commissioned small cogs to transport people from Helissa to Italy. Today the more modern Helissan Marine operates to extend Helissan influence beyond its coastal waters and look out for the King's interests in shipping lanes in the Mediterranean.

The Royal Marine is currently only a green water navy capable of operating in the Littoral zones of the Helissan coast, however with the modernization of the military by King Nikifor the Royal Marine is set to see future advancements in its capabilities to project its power all the way to the European shores and into the Atlantic. While this is many years off in advancement of Helissan technology the War Ministry is looking to buy naval ships from other countries to strengthen it's ranks.

Personnel:

The Royal Marine is last on the request for duty assignments by many Helissan youth during their conscription, however it takes the second biggest majority of the conscripts behind the Royal Army. This may be due to the Marine's rough reputation for hard labor and long hours as sea, while many of the other branches do not stray far from home during times of peace. Never the less the Royal Marine is still looked to as one of the most honorable branches of service and many Knights and Lordlings can be found in its ranks manning the rails of the few ships in the Marine's service. Berbers make up a large minority of the Marine's personnel as well (Over 30%). They are considered a valuable asset to the Navy as many of their skills in maritime activities are needed for smaller boats, security, or even naval upkeep.

The Lord's Royal Ready Reserves

Total Personnel: 12,000,000

The Lord's Royal Ready Reserve is a branch of the Armed Forces of the Crown that encompasses a large portion of the civilian male population of the Kingdom of Helissa. It takes the largest portion of the recruits that are conscripted each year and is a reserve force ready to be called up in a moments notice. The LRRR is a huge part of Helissan culture as well as military branch, participation in the military is seen as very honorable for a male to partake in. Every able bodied honorable man in Helissa takes part in either and active branch or the LRRR, this can be seen in normal life as members of the active branch wear their uniforms around on a day to day basis and members of the LRRR can do the same and they often do.

Each portion of the LRRR is loyal to the commands of the Lord of the section of the Kingdom that it resides in. This gives the Lords of the various states of the Kingdom great power to defend their potion of the realm. The purpose of this is the great national bond of the states and the people's loyalties to the portion of the Kingdom that they live in. However the Lord's of the several states can be ordered to send soldiers from their portion of the Kingdom to aid in any of the King's conflicts, if they defy this it could mean to loss of their title and lands, or even death.

The LRRR historically has been called up in every major conflict that Helissa has been involved in. From the first Berber War to the current expansion the LRRR has been at the forefront of all major conflicts. The LRRR is an Army ground force, no reserves exists for the Marine or Army Air Force however if a member of the active part of these branches goes into the reserves they are assigned to a unit in the LRRR that is comparable to their skills.

Personnel:

As stated above the LRRR is the largest in-taker of new conscripts. The LRRR recruits train side by side with Royal Army recruits and then afterwards they are assigned to the three different LRRR districts and to a unit with their specialty. There they participate in monthly drills until their second year of service when they then no longer need to participate in drills or can opt to be an active part of the LRRR and continue to drill. Members of the LRRR both active and inactive can opt to participate in military ceremonies, activities, training's, and drills at any time they feel the want or need extra training. Some even participate to reconnect with old friends. The LRRR is a large community that brings the Helissan people together as well as provides a reserve force for the Army.

Officer Ranks:
    O-1: Sublieutenant
    O-2: Lieutenant
    O-3: Captain
    O-4: Major
    O-5: Lieutenant Colonel
    O-6: Colonel
    O-7: Brigadier
    O-8: General
    O-9: Marshal
    O-10: Field Marshal

Enlisted Ranks:
    E-1: Private
    E-2: Private Second Class
    E-3: Lance Corporal
    E-4: Corporal
    E-5: Sergeant
    E-6: Colour Sergeant
    E-7: Staff Sergeant/Platoon Sergeant
    E-8: Staff Sergeant Second/First Sergeant
    E-9: Sergeant Major

Branches of the KRRR:

Logistics Corps: Responsible for quartermaster functions, transportation functions, and the handling of munitions.

Medical Corps: Doctors who chose to join the Royal Army to take care of soldiers in the King's service. They handle everything from dental to veterinarian services.

Military Police Corps: Tasked with policing of soldiers and assisting local police with operations.

Signal Corps: Tasked with the communications of both battlefield and training army units. Communications such as radio, telephone and cyber are used by the Royal Army.

Pre-Modernization Air Defense Artillery that the Corps has are the ZPU-4 and the ZU-23-2.

Infantry: The foot soldiers of the KRRR did not escape the low budget equipment of pre-modernization however they are receiving more more modern equipment as of late from foreign suppliers. The main battle rifle used is the QM1A1 Grinder. The standard sidearm for soldiers issued one is the Walther P99. For close quarters the Mossberg Maverick. For long range targeting several different sniper rifles are in service such as the Dragunov SVD, KSVK 12.7, and the Mauser M59. When it comes to anti armor several different ATM's are used by the LRRR: 9M113 Konkurs, RPG-29, RPG-26 and the 9K111 Fagot. For light anti air capability the infantry use the 9K38 Igla. For mortars the Hirtenberger M6C-210 is used, Vektor SS-77, DShK.

Transportation: Transportation and logistics is a part of the LRRR that until modernization was lacking the capability of a modern fighting force. Before more modern equipment was introduced horses and camels were the modes of transportation. In the past fifty years more transportation equipment has appeared in the LRRR including Range Rover Sport, and the Volkswagen Amarok. Most recently through international donations more modern means of logistics have been added: Land Rover 101 Forward Control, GAZ-66, Iveco ACTL, and the Mungo ESK, Adamant Force.

Aviation: Being one of the youngest branches in the Royal Army the Aviation Corps has benefited the most from foreign donations being almost non-existent prior to the addition of the aviation corps. The hard striking arm of the aviation corps comes in its Mi-24D, Mi-24VM. The forward recon arm of the corps uses the lighter MBB Bo 105. The Corps also uses the fixed wing Cessna 172 for scouting. Air transportation are dictated to the Mil Mi-2, Mil Mi-17, and the Mil Mi-26.

Royal Coast Guard

Total Personnel: 20,000

The Royal Coast Guard is a branch of the Armed Forces of the Crown that is tasked with the defense of the nations coastlines, ports and rivers from all boat traffic. It acts as a state police force on the water monitoring all shipping lanes and ensuring no illegal activities are being conducted. In addition it helps the customs officials with monitoring what comes in and out of the Kingdom through its water ways.

Founded only in 2009 as a measure to protect the port of Donovia the Royal Coast Guard has been expanded to cover all major ports within the Kingdom of Helissa. Its duties also include ASW, SAR, and Mine sweeping. It is subservient to the Royal Marine during joint operations and plays a supporting role.

Personnel:

Nearly all of the Royal Coast Guardsmen are white Helissan males. Berbers only make up less than 1% of the entire force. The RCG also is not a service branch that can be picked as a service assignment selection. All guardsmen are former Marine sailors that have come off of active duty and opted to serve in the RCG. The tenure in the RCG is on average five years in which the guardsmen would then retire to the KRRR for duty assignment in the reserves.

The Royal Guard is a special branch of the Armed Forces of the Crown specifically tasked with the protection of the King and the Royal Family. Operations from ground movement of the monarchs and air movement of the monarchs by helicopter are tasked to this elite branch of service. Both a tough selection process and rigerous training make these the best guards in the entire Kingdom of Helissa. Personnel:

The Guardsmen of the Royal Guard are hand picked from the most elite of special forces within the Royal Army and Royal Marine. Total Personnel: 42,500

The several Royal Knight Orders of the Armed Forces of the Crown is a ceremonial and elite force of soldiers that are taken from the best of the best of the different Royal Services and assigned to a Knight Order based on their specialty. Each of the men in the several Knight Orders are knighted by the King and his Lord's which gives them a title of nobility and status within the Kingdom. This gives each of the men in the Knight Orders extreme loyalty to their King and Kingdom and makes them all the more lethal.

While titles of nobility and status may make some soft, these warriors are only hardened and warm by such things. The soldiers of the several Knight Orders are amongst the most elite soldiers available for any situation. Trained in specialties such as Airborne, Amphibious, Desert, or Jungle operations the Knights of these orders train day in and day out while being given the best medical care and receiving the best pay.

Personnel:

Taken from the Royal Army, Army Air Force, and Marine these Knights receive additional training in a variety of environmental areas and specialties before receiving their own rating which fits them into a specialty. A majority of the Knights from these orders were normal working class civilians of the Kingdom prior to their enlistment and then rise to the title of Knight. A small minority are those young nobles who strive to seek appointment to this group of elite warriors, however they must adhere to the same physical and intelligence standards as any other solider applying. When entering their respective orders they start at the bottom rank of either the enlisted or officer side.

Branches of the Knight Orders:

Most sustainment and yeoman activities are deferred to Royal Army soldiers to save money and personnel.

Artillery Corps: Managers of large pieces of field artillery that are used for fire support and sieges of cities. Most recently with modernization efforts they have begun to integrate some Air Defense into their duties.

Cavalry Corps: These are the spearhead of the Knight Orders ground tasking. They ride into battle and charge down their enemies. Many cav units still ride horses and camels as cavalry has since the beginning of its existence. Modernization has brought to the cavalry tanks, armored personnel carriers, and other armored pieces of equipment.

Aviation Corps: The newest and youngest branch of the Knight Orders. The first generation soldiers of this branch are trained mostly by foreign advisers. They fly some of the first aircraft the Royal Army has ever handled.

Engineer Corps: These soldiers build and fight and are tasked with both making things of war and tearing them down. They are experts at fortifications both building and demolishing.

Infantry Corps: The ground pounders in the Knight Orders. They are the foot soldiers of the King and are trained in infantry tactics both rural and urban.

Intelligence Corps: The eyes and ears of the Knight Order. Gathering both strategic and battlefield intelligence for use by commanders.

The Household Armies of the Kingdom of Helissa

Total Personnel: 78,000

Household armies are a tradition within the Kingdom of Helissa that has been around since the beginning of the Kingdom in the 12th century. Lord's of various lands and size have had men-at-arms that have been loyal to them and looked after the interest of their Lords. Whether it was policing their subjects, fighting bandits, or the occasional civil conflict against other Lords the various household forces of Helissa have been a key part of its military for the duration of its history. On occasion in extreme circumstances household forces may be called upon by the King to participate and augment the Royal Army in times of need.

Today household forces play a very same role but on a bigger scale. Each of the separate lands of Helissa are ruled over by a Lord that is a vassal to the King of Helissa. These Lords (and even some houses without lands) have their own forces which they pay for, supply, and are responsible for training. Some of these forces are very large encompassing sizable elements which could stand up to an entire Royal Army Field Army and hold their own. Others are very small and more equal to a household guard. The only difference in household forces today than in the past is that these soldiers must be full time active duty members of their household forces. No reserve forces are permitted as to not take away from the KRRR.

Personnel:

Household men-at-arms account for 30% of the request for duty assignments each year by white Helissan male conscripts. These conscripts are then permitted to serve as members of the household forces of various lords. As per the usual all conscripts are put through the same training as any other member of any other branch. They would then move on to any technical training needed, or any training that the house that owns the forces deems necessary. Much like the Royal Army household forces are very prestigious to be apart of however it is sometimes a hard life of training, and hard to get into. Over 10% of the 30% of conscripts that request to serve in house forces are rejected by the household forces they request.

Ranks differ greatly depending on the household force, no universal system is in place.

Branches:

Branches of the various household forces are many in number. Almost all the branches seen in the other services in the Armed Forces of the Crown can be found within household forces and then some. Many technical and sustainment fields are the same as the many branches and there are even some extra forms of combat arms branches that do not exist within the regular army. This gives the King a great deal of a mix of types of forces he could call on during a time of war.

Equipment:

The various house forces do not use the same types of equipment as the equipment is supplied by the various Lords. However household forces at times can be found better equipped than the regular army depending on how rich the house in which they serve is.

ORBAT:

    Royal Army of House Donovan
