Hmm...

The Paedophilia scandals... scandal?... honestly I can't remember how many there were but it was a real mess. I feel like there were two posters or two nations because I very clearly remember certain players yelling at the mods for not deleting a nation they knew was a particular player that they hadn't reported. I'm underselling but this was HUGE... there was a recent kerfuffle but I can't even remember what that was about whereas it's only the details that I don't recall here.

The "mods read TGs" scandal which was... ridiculous. The major cause in the mass exodus from the forum of Neo Art and his cronies.

NSG Culture and the Rules... a massive thread that provided ample evidence of players not reporting players they like which somehow became "the mods are the problem" thread. One of the key reasons why we have the R/D/Q system in Moderation to this day.

Karinzistan's one man war on the forum. This was annoying but, seriously, don't bully people.

The Silver Medal Affair. Again, don't bully people. Thanks a lot... I feel like if I use the noun I want to I'll get dinged for trolling. The facepalm was one of the emoticons I use!

Four Sided Triangles... what happens if a guy figures out how to get around the DOS system basically perfectly? Apparently he makes a bunch of weird anti-sex threads and seemingly everyone just has to be in them. Oh, and then he gets DEAT'd for trolling Christians, is discovered to be a DOS'd player called (iirc) Unhealthy Truthseeker and comes back again as CVT Temp, before getting caught (as far as I know, permanently).

Any Xerographica thread but, in particular, the threadjack idiocy. You, I and everyone we know, knows Xero's threads are about one thing and one thing only. Warning people for talking about that was and remains stupid. Warning people for threadjacking when they talked about the topic the thread was superficially about was particularly egregious but not one of those warnings was deserved.

The first What Do You Look Like and, especially, the first Eternal Thread. Never used the forum and irregularly use the various editions of the Eternal Thread but they were major features of NSG for years so they should get a look in here. I maintain that page 5000 TET is the best TET (back in the day there was apparently no thread page limit).

The creation, heyday and banning of the RWDT. Similar to the above but with the addition of a whole bunch of copy cat threads and the gradual takeover of NSG by megathreads (an era which has now ended).

The Trollnaming announcement. Again, should've been a non-starter but somehow became a whole Thing.

And then there's one other incident that springs to mind but in hindsight, it was really only limited to those of us who posted in a certain genre of thread so I neglect to mention it. But don't defame people online.

EDIT: also, 1000 Cats' deletion. Kind of not related to NSG directly, I suppose.

Also, -Ebola-. the emergence of IM's brand/style of thread and the radicalisation or whatever the hell exactly happened with Parkus... but they're more processes than events.

Ah, this just reminded me of basically two completely unrelated things. Firstly, that weird time of day where the search function ceases to work properly on this version of the forums. Secondly, that time where a massive gameside update meant a privileged few were logged in and were the only ones who could log in for hours. I think that's happened a few times but I feel like there was a major thread at the time... I think the nation who made it started with M. Hmm... might have to look at the most recent posters you remember thread...

There was that one time that guy called 1000 Cats got banned for openly promoting sex with animals. That was different.

Strictly speaking he got banned for not shutting up when protesting the deletion of a zoophilia themed region.

A rare example of [violet] directly telling the mods what to do.

I have the dubious honor of being the OP of the last ever LWDT, but since the behind-the-scenes discussions in the Mod Cave regarding closing them had been taking place for months beforehand, then I don't think the last one did anything to affect the decision.

I have this weird tendency to remember DOS users. Like does anyone else remember that potato spammer dude back in like 2013-2014-ish? Or that one user, who had a bunch of puppet accounts, who was obsessed with the movie Frozen and would threadjack discussions to be centred around the movie.

I mostly remember the latter use because, when they were made DOS, the mod that posted their DOS order ended the post with something like 'YOU ARE HEREBY PERMANENTLY BANNED FROM NATIONSTATES.NET. ALL YOUR EXISTING ACCOUNTS WILL BE DELETED AND ANY FUTURE ACCOUNTS TERMINATED WITHOUT WARNING. DO NOT COME BACK.' and the DOS user managed to get one last post in basically begging them to not do this because they were innocent. And they also kept trying to sneak back in but it was always super obvious it was them because they had a super distinctive posting style (IIRC it was like short sentences a lot? Like 'I do not agree with this. These people should obey the law. It is not right for them to do this. It is disruptive') and they would always do identical threads whenever they rejoined (like it wasn't NSG, but they would make embassy threads in F&NI that were always copy-pasted from each other and would join the same RP organisation).

Also not NSG related but remember when the original operator of the NS++ extension got DEAT'd (and maybe DOS as well?) for threatening to use his TOTALLY 100% LEGAL* bruteforce password cracker against a region because of IDK regional/Security Council drama.

*It was not TOTALLY 100% LEGAL, it was in fact TOTALLY 0% LEGAL.

The Liberal and Conservative Zones were an April Fool's joke by the mods. Once everyone started posting in both the joke was worn out and somehow they merged the forums again. But I wonder if the joke inspired the LWDT and RWDT's?

For the first one, you're thinking of The Zeonic States, DoS'd in July 2013.

The last one has already been mentioned under its nickname of the "May Massacre", as it took place on 1 May 2016.

I'll also give a shoutout to Forsher for his great post; he's of the same generation of NS users I am so we remember a lot of the same things from what n00bs (anyone who joined 2015 or newer ) consider "back in the olden days".

The Parkus Empire was well-liked in his original tenure on the forum from 2005 to 2013. Having rage-quit in October 2013, he came back in 2017 and was, to put it politely, not the same Parkus a lot of people remembered, just flying off the handle more easily and seemingly obsessed with homosexuality and why it was evil. He ended up getting DEAT'd, revived his antiquity puppet Mardla, used that for maybe six months before either rage-quitting or joining some monastery or cult, came back briefly in summer 2019 in character as some Muslim guy and that's all I know. Weird dude.

I'm not sure why the banana kid gets mentioned so much as a defining thing for so many people; maybe because for newer users he was the closest thing they've known to the serial spammers we used to get pretty regularly especially back in 2009-2010. I've read about all kinds of colourful characters from back then. BNPs Britain and his summer 2009 porn spam campaign that all resulted from getting his main nation deleted for posting past a ban. Was the guy who posted the suicide note back in 2011 Hammurab by any chance? If so, he got DoS'd in June 2012 as well IIRC.

You even allowed a DOS poster to return in order to help with it all. It was just amazing to see how everyone mobilized to help them. A brilliant spot on NSG history.
