More like they are not that stupid. But considering Ireland faces no plausible threats and is a very small country, nukes would do it no good anyway.

Nothing against Ireland, it is a fine but a very small country. Connecticut has a bigger GDP than Ireland. Ireland simply does not have the human or natural resources to be a great or even mid level power.

Nuclear weapons stop war, but only because of how destructive they are. Imagine giving your psychotic neighbor who doesn't understand the Home Owner's Association a match and 18 gallons of lighter fuel. Everyone else knows that lighting another persons house on fire will only end of badly for them, but the psycho doesn't care about his house, nor understand why you shouldn't light your rivals house on fire.

First off in most cases soldiers are also citizens...I assume you meant civilians. But even there lots of other weapons kill civilians as well. Hell, didn't Fire bombing cause more civilian casualties than Hiroshima and Nagasaki? Plus civilians are still killed by land mines from wars that have been over for decades. Cluster bombs. Carpet bombing. Lots of things kill indiscriminately and almost no weapon save perhaps snipers can really prevent 100% of collateral damage.

Well the USA hasn't banned them, well effectively we have a de facto ban at the moment but we reserve the right to use them in the future.

For all their potential to end civilization and most multi-cellular life on this planet, nuclear weapons are an unfortunate necessity these days, and in fact became a necessity the moment the Trinity device was set off. Once one power obtained such a weapon of mass destruction, every other nation with the means would by necessity have to race and develop their own to maintain the balance of power.

Consequently, the threat of nuclear armageddon is the only thing that's kept a relative peace for all these years. Without the threat of indiscriminate global annihilation, there would be nothing to stop the world's major powers from waging destructive conventional wars.
Freedom doesn't mean being able to do as one please, but rather not to do as one doesn't please.

A fool sees religion as the truth. A smart man sees religion as a lie. A ruler sees religion as a useful tool.

The treaty did not come into effect until 1968, and Cuba did not ratify until 1995. The Cuban missile crisis was in 1962. So actually Cuba did not cheat on it.
