Efficient Allocation VS Galloistic Allocation

Postby Xerographica » Fri Jul 15, 2016 10:09 pm

As some of you probably already know... I'm a very big fan of resources being "efficiently" allocated. In my thread on crowdfunding decisions, Galloism pointed out, for the gazillionth time, that the efficient allocation of resources does not take into account the fact that people do not all have the same amount of money. While composing my reply to him it dawned on me that I've never run across a term for a method of allocation that does take wealth/income inequality into account. So I took the liberty of naming such an allocation method after him.

fair allocation = based on randomness or first come first serve
efficient allocation = based on people's willingness to pay
galloistic allocation = based on people's willingness and ability to pay

Let's consider an example. The occupants of a house move away. Who should get the newly available house? With the fair allocation method a family could be randomly chosen from a list... or the house could be given to the family that's been waiting the longest. With the efficient allocation method the house could simply be sold to the highest bidder. With the galloistic allocation method the house could be sold to the bidder who was willing to spend the greatest percentage of their wealth. If I was willing to spend 50% of my wealth on the house... but you were willing to spend 51% of your wealth on the house... then you would get the house despite the fact that 50% of my wealth was $5,000,000 dollars but 51% of your wealth was $51 dollars.

Which allocation method do you prefer? Personally, I prefer the efficient allocation because I perceive a decent correlation between wealth and beneficial behavior. The more beneficially you use society's limited resources... the more money you'll earn... and the more money you'll earn... the greater the amount of society's limited resources you can beneficially use. Beneficial behavior is incentivized. The correlation between wealth and beneficial behavior isn't perfect though because so far none of you have paid me any money for my super beneficial posts. :p Darn free-rider problem. >:(

Once again, we were talking about organ transplants, not houses, and I take into account neither ability nor willingness to pay when it comes to how available organs should be allocated. This does not mean that method should be applied to everything forever.

This entire thread is based on a false premise and is just a strawman argument in thread form.

Are we actually naming things after Gallo now?

I approve.

If something's named in honour of Gallo, I'm for it. :P
I used to run an alliance, and a region. Not that it matters now.

The "efficient allocation" is only used in our society and considered "efficient" by economists because it is the best approximation we currently have for the "Galloistic allocation". If the "Gallositic Allocation" could be used in real life it would objectively be the best method as it would maximise utility.

Quick, someone write up a Gallo/Xero lemon fic.
Crimes committed by Muslims will be a pan-Islamic plot and proof of Islam's inherent evil. On the other hand crimes committed by non-Muslims will merely be the acts of loners who do not represent their belief system at all.
The probability of one's participation in homosexual acts is directly proportional to one's public disdain and disgust for homosexuals.
If a political figure makes an accusation of wrongdoing without evidence, odds are probable that the accuser or an associate thereof has in fact committed the very same act, possibly to a worse degree.
Where is your God-Emperor now?

If it involves a sex scene, I'm suing. Just saying.

Xerographica ran his fingers down Galloism's taught back, reaching lower, grasping firmly. Galloism could not hold back a gasp, as though the Invisible Hand had taken hold of his buttocks.
Desperate to establish himself as individual with the highest demand, Galloism says "the demand for my ripe body far exceeds any you have yet encountered; Quiggin himself wouldn't know how to allocate this booty."
Xerographica hisses back in his ear "We'll let the marketplace determine that."
Galloism gulped nervously.

Annnnnd, that's enough of THAT.

If you'd like to pursue this (and I am sure you would, Xerographica) start a new thread in which you don't name a strawman after another poster to call them out. And the rest of you lot, keep your fantasies to yourselves -- or at least to non-Nationstates.net territory.
