Think about. We are not talking about a 'FEW' farmers. Those people are being killed off by the native populations in droves the entire journey. What if ,say, they come upon a united county of 30,000 armed people. Most of them would die at that point.
30,000 people aren't going to beat 200,000. And they aren't going to be killed in droves by anybody because nobody is stupid enough to attack 200,000 people.

Where abouts do you live? From some estimations most of the US would be under feet of ash.

1- Go to a rural area (the desert of Central Australia would be an ideal location) and ride out the storm.
2- travel on a spaceship to start a human colony on mars. If you can fix the air pressure there and then plant trees, these trees will release Oxygen and make Mars a suitable habitat.

Nah, nah, nah
You need the proper bayonets these days. Not the puny M9 standard-issue knifes they call bayonets but the real bayonets that make men shiver in fear as the enemy enters your trench. Of course you wouldn't use the real bayonets like slashing implements but for stabbing the eyes or skulls of zombies.

The operative word here is "depending." If the aliens are a species of merciless domination, you're dead. If they're malevolent conquerors, good chance that you're dead, unless you are offering something. A species that's more focused on resource gathering and just happen to think Earth is a great place to stop by, eh, it can go either way if you stand in their path. A species who promotes galactic peace, world by world, I think we'll all get along just fine.
.... I wish that the latter aliens would come here.
