It's best described as a system that subordinates femininity to masculinity. Or in simpler terms a societal structure in which men are valued over women. It doesn't have to be explicit, as it is in China (one child policy resulted in a massive imbalance in the sexes), but it's something that the vast majority of human societies share in one form or another.
