Depending on his school's policy, just being involved in a "fight" might be enough to land him there. Also the detention might be unrelated to that incident.

Also, if you do get into a fight, don't try to win. Try to kill your opponent. The likelyhood of you being successful is exceedingly small.

Victory in all fights is, for me, the enemy's destruction. But in school, at the very least try to get a crowd of people stirred in. Either they'll mob you or get the attention of administration so you don't get mauled any worse.
Or, failing that, make a tactical maneuver.
