I don't think they are cowardly as much as they prefer to avoid confrontations. It saves more energy and hence fat for the winter hibernation to simply run from/evade confrontation with other predators.

Though I have to wonder if there is much of a difference. Wouldn't the emotion they feel that provokes that drive be akin to fear, in a lesser state? Dunno, just speculating. Though I'd imagine it must feel similiar to how when you're in the woods and someone unidentified approaches.
That picture reminds me of when my goats used to break into my house. I'd find the house a mess, flour and tore up clothing and books everywhere, and all the goats sleeping in my bed. Oddly enough it happened more than once, too. One of my goats kept figuring out how to open the latch on my door no matter how I built it...
