Those are always the best arguments.

It's entirely possible to learn stuff while wasting time. Entirely. But that doesn't mean that you weren't doing whatever activity you were doing when you learned those things out of any motivation other than to waste time.

When I'm bored I can sit and read Wikipedia for hours and learn about many things, but if someone asked me if I was doing anything important the answer would be "no", and if someone asked me if I was just killing time the answer, undoubtedly, would be "yes".

I regard self-improvement as important.

The discussion itself is the purpose.
But the discussion has other effects which make it a worthwhile purpose.
Entertainment is one of them, but also training the mind and such, and it can educate people on a few random bits of information. If we've altered the way someone has voted at all in an election, then you also have to ask "What's the importance of a single vote?" which is a whole other quagmire.

This works for me. If I had the time for RPing, I'd do that too.

OTOH, it does seem that many Generalites are more interested in arguing and/or simply stating their opinions than convincing anybody who has different ideas.

I'll re-iterate my question posed in the previous thread; do you think if every citizen of a nation devoted some of their time to discuss matters of politics, philosophy, theology, and morality, that the nation would be better off as a result?

Nah. I think everybody talks politics to some extent, and probably talks about the rest too... but doesn't have much interest in thinking too hard about the last three.

Sure. I've got my self-interest to watch out for.

Yes. The Romans would have called it otium, the opposite of negotium (nec+otium). Negotium was one's professional activity, such as working in the fields, hunting, fishing, haggling at the market (in Italian that's still called negozio!), cleaning the house etc. Otium was talking philosophy, doing sports, debating politics and laws, enjoying art...

Posting here is one of the things that make otium the central activity of a person: the pleasant time spent doing non-strictly necessary things. Everything else is non-otium, that is, negotium: the stuff you have to do to live... and to gain time and money you can spend in otium.
