How did you come up with your nation name?

Postby Brutland and Norden » Sun May 03, 2009 8:25 am

IIRC the first thread I made in JF NSG ~2 years ago asked forum-goers this question. Since we've all got a new forum, new members, and possibly more traffic from the non-JF-going crowd, I'd like to ask:

How did you come up with your nation name?

Brutland and Norden:
Brutland: I thought I was being original, but I found out a few months later that my subconscious got it from the NS FAQ!
Norden: This nation was meant to have a Scandinavian character, so I mashed up the name of two Nordic nations. (Guess what they are.) And, yes, I found out that Norden indeed exists, it's a city in northern Germany, in the state of Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony) :D

So what's yours?

I was on the computer and was just sitting down to decide a name when someone runs up and tells me to hurry up and get off. I'm not quite sure how it got there. The full name is a redundancy though which makes me look foolish. :( Well I wasn't that good with making names anyway.

In a computer game I played (Escape Velocity) it was what I had named my spaceship. Of course I had spelled properly then (Sage, not Saige). How did I come up with my spaceships name? I have no idea.

My nation is supposed to be a sort of merging between English and Dutch cultures. I completely made up "Vaar", thinking the two a's made it sound Dutch. Later I found out that vaar is in fact a Dutch word, it is a form of the verb varen, meaning "to sail", which makes sense because Vaarshire is an island. As for "shire", we all know that adding "shire" to anything makes it sound English.

Daistallia was the name of my third nation. The first two were created in the spring of 2003 and abandoned shortly after. I created Daistallia over my summer vacation that year. The name comes from a con-world that I'd imagined and reimagined over the past 20 years. The original meaning was intended to be "Greater Stallia", and was influanced by both my early Japanese and Spanish studies.

Daistallia 2104 was created in 2004 when I RPed the IC destruction of Daistallia and it's re-emergence 100 years in the future, and the meaning should be obvious.

My other significant posting history nation is Sapient Cephalopods. That name is associated with my facisnation with cepalopods, and in particular the image/idea of "uplifted"/"provolved"/genetically modified intelligent octopuses.

I originally wanted to go with something that brought up an image of sort of Soviet/Communist-style Blade Runner or something. Five minutes of thinking on and off and I came up with this. I just forgot to add "the". :P

My first nation was Golgothastan. I had just come back from Mass, where the reading had used "Golgotha" instead of "Calvary". (I later found out there was a major NS region called "Gholgoth", and might have chosen differently if I'd known this.)

My major nation is Gruenberg. I decided it would be based on a religion that had a holy mountain after reading about the NSUN's World Heritage List on NSwiki. A couple of other "-berg" nations were already taken.

This nation is taken from my favourite Shakespeare speech, in Hamlet.

Finally, I demand Monkeypimp post in this thread as I've forgotten his explanation but recall it being amazing.

On another site I go to, people had joked about the pastriarchy for a while. It began as either a typo or an intentional pun. Anyway, I thought it sounded like something that could rule a country where everything was really delicious.

Re: How did you come up with your nation name?

Postby Unibot » Sun May 03, 2009 9:51 am

In the spring last year I was writing a play about a suburbs like utopia, a "nation-state". In the play, the utopia is a government monopoly that houses a product called Unibot- it's called The Unibot because it is as all of these great inventions in one robot which picks and primes you into the perfect human being. I didn't actually come up with the name, Unibot, the other writer came up with it - I don't even remember what I had wanted to called the machine.

Anyway in the play the designs of the machine are from a mastermind inventor, a Da Vinci-like character named Canard Ode who is forced to hide the blueprints for his greatest invention for the sands of time - later to be discovered by Eduard Heir, a german starving artist and his girlfriend, the insecure, Eva Renate in the Great Depression.

Pretending the inventions are his own, Eduard markets the product as the great western invention - and it leads to a perfect utopia that is squashed with the rise of independence.

While writing the play I was on the internet, searched nation-state and found the game.
Typed the name as Unibot, tried to create a moralistic corporate bordello of some kind - and the rest is history. I still write with Eduard Heir as my nation's president in honor of the script, I've left his masculinist inklings but I left out the Hitler analogies, instead focusing on a playboy billionaire aspect.
