Canuks...June is National Aboriginal Month

Postby Kiskaanak » Thu Jun 09, 2011 8:45 am

Did you know this?

Until 2009, we only had National Aboriginal Day (June 21st).

The more substantive question of course would be...do you know anything about us? Are you planning on learning anything about us?

So, here is a calendar of some of the events across Canada to celebrate Aboriginal History Month. If you get a chance, you should check out events that are close to you.

You could also check out a pow-wow, as they'll be held all through the warm months. They are generally held in aboriginal communities and you'd have to search that community specifically for a date...but there are also often mini 'urban' pow-wows if you're living in the cities.

There may also be more events depending on where you live.

1: No.
2: No.
:p

I'll respond to this one in a more (or actually) serious manner...

Unfortunately the only ones that are close enough to me don't seem the least bit interesting... Of course, I'm hampered in "close enough" by not being Canadian...

If I didn't have to work when they were going on. And if they weren't really freaking lame like the one that happens in my town every year...

Meh.

What? I can't afford to just randomly take time off from work, and I can assure you, you'd agree with me about my local pow-wow... It's a joke.

My 'meh' was in the vein of..."Do I want to take the time and energy to convince this guy that he should learn about Aboriginal people and then research a way for him to get to a good pow-wow?" to which I answered..."Meh".

Ah... Okay.
And you're right, I should learn more about aboriginal people, if for no reason other than the fact that it is part of my family history (I'm part Algonquin (albeit a very small part)).
