Exactly, it's not like saying "So help me God" is going to cause you to burst into flames.

Do you think that theists would prefer to be forced to deny their their god in an oath? No, it's this sort of inequality that gives me headaches

Its not like Christians get priority and have a government with a Christian bias in the US anyway...Oh wait...

Of course not, that would be silly. But I have the oddest suspicion that if soldiers were sworn in under the name of Lord Satan, or the Tooth Fairy, you might be more concerned.

That's exactly what "So help me God" looks like to me.

You need God's help to be successful in combat and to not be killed. Don't like that? Too bad for you because it's true whether or not you accept it.

Well then it is quite kind of this 'God' to help even nonbelievers

But if one is only succeeding because they are being helped, then that means the other is losing only because 'God' wants them to fail.

If 'God' is really helping believers and non-believers alike, and hindering believers and non-believers alike, then worshipping that 'God' doesn't really seem to be worth much

So you'd be fine if the government decided Rastafarianism was in and changed it to "So help me, flying spaghetti monster"?

no here is why, since this guy is an atheist,he believes that no matter what he does he won't have reprocutions when he dies,so it does not matter to him,but if you tell a christian "sware your undying loyality to buddha" he will believe his god will punish him

But his point is it's only words, so why not swear your loyalty to the spaghetti monster or Cthulu? You wont suddenly combust, right?

Precisely. Even if God exists, he isn't the sort of monster that I'd much like to pledge my allegiance to.

"Believing in a deity" is not a requisite of "taking oaths seriously".

I thought buddhists don't have gods? Besides, if you get someone to swear in the name of a deity they don't believe in, aren't you just asking them to lie on an oath? What good does that do?

Looks like another example of us not really being "Separation of Church and State" like we repeatedly say we are when we're clearly not on a regular basis. Good to see this resolved.

Considering this is resolved, I daresay we do have separation of church and state.

I disagree, considering there's like seven US states where atheists/agnostics are not allowed to run for a government position.

What are these states? That sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Unless you're saying that the religious voters won't elect them.
