Ron DeSantis has signed a bill which will ban those under 14 years of age from making accounts on all(?) social media sites, and require 14 and 15-year olds to get permission from their parents before they make a social media account. Apparently, the legislature previously put forward a bill banning under-16s from social media entirely, but it was vetoed on account of it violating parents' right. The new bill will come into effect from January 2025. Personally, I think this is a good idea, due to the very negative effects social media can have on children. However, it is likely to be that some children violate the law (I don't suppose that will incur them or their parents any sort of legal punishment, will it?), and I wonder whether it will apply to all social media sites, and what it considers a social media site. For example, does NationStates count as one in it? Some people have also raised concerns that it might prevent children from exploring aspects of the world their parents might restrict, like gender/sexuality, though there are sure to be some people who consider that to be a good thing. So, NSG, what is your opinion on this bill? Should measures similar to it be taken in more places?
