World Bowl XLVII – Ranoria and South Newlandia

Welcome to World Bowl 47! 32 teams enter this tournament, co-operatively hosted by Ranoria and South Newlandia, in search of the next team to lift the trophy for the biggest gridiron tournament in the multiverse. Do note that this is American Football (usually referenced here as “gridiron”, as “America” is not a thing every country on NSS acknowledges), which means this tournament largely follows NFL rules, with the only major exception being the use of IFAF/NCAA overtime rules.

Format:

The 32 teams will be organised in 4 groups of 8, playing each opponent once at home and once on the road. The top four teams in each group will advance to the Round of 16 in South Newlandia and Ranoria. From there, a single-elimination knockout bracket will be played.
The relevant tie-breakers are, in order: 1) Group Placement (Seeding only) 2) Wins 3) H2H result 4) H2H point differential 5) Point differential 6) IC coinflip (scorinated playoff game in lieu of rank).
If a tie between multiple teams must be broken and one team wins the tiebreaker at any stage, while the remaining teams are still tied, the tiebreakers start at the top of the list again to break the tie between the remaining teams. Two teams may only play against a team they already played in the group stage starting from the quarterfinals. There also will be no Third-Place Playoff, with both losing semifinalists being declared joint 3rd place.

RP cutoff will be between 7 and 9 pm UTC for the South Newlandian half, and between 9-11 pm ET for the Ranorian half, which is 1-3 am UTC on the following day. To clarify, MD1 on the Ranorian half will be scored in the early morning hours that are already the 24th in the UTC time zone.

Teams will not be given their ranking points in scorination until they have posted a roster. As soon as a roster is provided, their ranking points will be applied in full.

Your roster may include a style modifier between and including -5 (ultra-defensive) over 0 (neutral) to +5 (hyper-offensive).

WELCOME TO SOUTH NEWLANDIA

In a nutshell
South Newlandia is a small Esportivan island with about four million inhabitants, located east of Super-Llamaland. South Newlandia is known for democracy, elephants and environmentalism, as well as the friendly population, happy to help you out if you run into any problems.

Travel
The best options to get around in South Newlandia are the multiple high-speed trains that can get you almost everywhere in the country fairly quickly. If you don’t like trains, for some reason, there are also busses and cars to rent, but the streets aren’t always in perfect condition, and are far less convenient, to be honest. Flights inland are banned in South Newlandia. If you want to be mobile within a city, you can rent bikes for free, or you can take the underground if you are in a bigger city and the bus if the city is smaller. There are also busses and rental cars in the bigger cities, but unless you really need to, we wouldn’t advise you to use them. The bus is slower than the underground, and the underground gets you pretty much everywhere within a city. Cars can get very inconvenient because they are banned in many areas, and where they aren’t, there are rarely any parking spots. Seriously, don’t try to drive a car in South Newlandia. Most of the citizens don’t either; many of them don’t even have a license.

Weather
The climate typically stays the same in South Newlandia throughout most of the year, with warm winters and moderate summers. Snow is a foreign concept, and extreme heat is similarly uncommon. Weather extremes in general are rare, too; don’t expect any windstorms or floods or anything like that.

Rules and Laws you should be aware of
If you plan to visit South Newlandia, there are a few things you should be aware of beforehand. Laws on imported goods are rather strict, and things you’d expect to not be allowed to take into other countries are usually banned in South Newlandia as well. Examples for this include dead animals, living people unwilling to enter and bombs of any kind. The same regulations will also apply if you go to leave the country again. Special note should be made of South Newlandian drug laws. While all drugs, and this means all drugs, including alcohol and tobacco; are decriminalized in South Newlandia; this does not mean you are allowed to deal drugs. Selling or giving away drugs for any reason is strictly banned; this includes, again, alcohol and tobacco. However, you are allowed to take any drugs you want to without punishment, and are allowed to own any that are only for your own consumption. You are probably going to be treated like an addicted person though, so people might attempt to get you professional help to fight the addiction they perceive you to have. This is rare; most people are aware that different customs exist in other countries. In short, you are allowed to take any drugs into South Newlandia as long as you can convince officials that you aren’t addicted to them and do not intent to sell them. Bribing South Newlandian officials is basically impossible; border control is a very well-paid job in South Newlandia. Otherwise, the South Newlandian legal system is similar to the legal systems of most other civilised places; with the exception that jails and prisons have been outlawed.

Three of the stadiums hosting knockout games are located in Elephant Valley, with the lone exception being the Jungledrom in Ratzupalfu.

Elephant Valley Information

General
Elephant Valley, the capital of South Newlandia, makes up about an eighth of the country’s population. The city has relatively few skyscrapers, but is built over a large area instead. The city used to be more industrial, but is mostly focusing on providing entertainment for the rest of the country; most of the biggest media outlets, like the “Elephant Valley Mail” or “South Newlandia One” are having their headquarters here, but there is also a lot of other IT-related industry here. Elephant Valley is relevant for just about every sport.

Sports
Elephant Valley is the centre of South Newlandian sports. They have two elite baseball teams in the Homers and United, and are also the host of most South Newlandian home games in baseball and soccer. Additionally, Gridiron football is bigger nowhere than in Elephant Valley, home of the national team and the NSCF team Elephant Valley University Red Elephants, as well as two of the Big Seven Schools of South Newlandian High School Gridiron.

Other attractions
Other than sports, Elephant Valley is by all accounts the heart of South Newlandian politics and culture. The South Newlandian government, a common sight to visit, is here, as well as some parts of the administration of the Esportivan Union. Elephant Valley also has multiple large universities, with the Elephant Valley Science Institute and Elephant Valley Sports College next to the aforementioned EVU. Other sights to visit in Elephant Valley include the biggest water park in the nation, as well as a massive statue of an Elephant painted in the colours of South Newlandia.

The people
Like in most of South Newlandia, many inhabitants of Elephant Valley are immigrants either in first, second, or third generation, creating a melting pot of all kinds of different cultures. In recent years, other cities have surpassed the growth rate of Elephant Valley, which has caused a once rapidly shifting city to settle down a bit.

Elephant Field (15,400)
Located a bit outside Elephant Valley, this small stadium is the biggest pure gridiron stadium the country has to offer – in fact, it is bigger than the other three combined. Without a roof, it is open to the elements of both wind and rain. Elephant Field is also used for home games of South Newlandia during World Bowls.

EVU Field (7,000)
EVU Field, located close to the Elephant Valley University, serves at the home of the NSCF team Red Elephants, and has been massively upgraded in anticipation of hosting World Bowl games for World Bowl 44. For World Bowl 47, they added a roof, so this is the only stadium where players will be safe from the rain.

Golden Elephants Stadium (1,600)
This stadium is the home turf of Elephant Valley Southwest High School, one of the most successful South Newlandian High Schools in the country. The Golden Elephants are also the current national champion. This small field doesn’t have a roof or any special amenities, but for a High School Team, it’s pretty big.

Ratzupalfu Information

General
Ratzupalfu, with a population of 175,000, located near the center of South Newlandia, was always a city trying to work with nature instead of against it, and it works out fairly well for them. The city is surrounded by jungle, with wild animals often not far away, and it will be your best bet if you want to see wild Elephants. Ratzupalfu is located at the edge of the South Newlandian jungle, encompassing most of the central portion of South Newlandia.

Sports
The Ratzupalfu Rhinos used to be a strong South Newlandian soccer team, and have the current South Newlandian baseball champion with the same name. They also gained the Ratzupalfu University of Nature Egrets playing in NS College Football. On top of that, Ratzupalfu is the team usually on top in South Newlandian basketball as well.

Other attractions
Other attractions, beside the jungle and the animals, include the aforementioned Ratzupalfu University of Nature, as well as many sources of information about South Newlandian wildlife, including the two biggest museums of South Newlandia.

The people
People from Ratzupalfu are more nature- and animal loving than any other in South Newlandia, and are going to tell you about their pets, and want to know about yours. People from here are willing to work together with nature, giving back more than they take.

The Jungledrom is the home of the NSCF team of the Ratzupalfu University of Nature, nicknamed the Egrets. It is wide open to the elements, which can make passing difficult; which often can lead to the ground game shining here.

Overview:
Ranoria is, in general, a cold-weathered and conservatively minded nation, though the southern regions have a more temperate climate. Police force is available but with extremely low crime rates often is employed more as civil assistants, and will be available to any tourists in need of a helping hand. The areas around most stadiums will feature some measure of urban development and plenty of opportunities for a community viewing the game in bars, outdoors, or otherwise, and most stadiums will have extensive tailgating parties to attend, if that's your thing.

Visitors should keep in mind that while marijuana and alcohol are legal, tobacco and other recreational drugs are not. Not to worry, most offenses regarding such substances will result in nothing more than a slap on the wrist - local police have no desire to get mixed up in international scandal.

The Yeezie Organization for GridIron (YOGI) proudly presents St. Kanye's roster for World Bowl XLVII. The Surge, currently ranked 11th in the world, have been a playoff contender for several editions now; the closest they've come to sniffing a title was five editions ago, where they got hammered by the mighty Ranorians in the finale. However, they hope that one day, they'll be the ones lifting the trophy.

This edition will see adjustments not only to the team's roster, recruiting several gridiron standouts fresh out of college (and even some who were unfortunately not given the chance to play internationally with the country's decision to take a break from NSCF competition), but also their color scheme and uniforms - in addition to the usual purple at home and white on the road, they will showcase some brand new alternates in a way darker purple shade that is almost black (replacing the actual black used in the previous sets).

The Surge is a pass-heavy, blitz-happy team, meaning that they want to get things done on the air and force their opponents to do so as well. However, they still work hard to make sure that they don't do badly on the things they focus less on.

Linetti remains as the Surge's starting QB and offensive captain. He's a dual threat, being both an accurate thrower as well as a speedy scrambler. Tim Hunt, Upper Westside University alumnus and Ranorian league standout, is his backup. Hunt's fellow Upper Westside University alumnus Adrian St. Roger, who led the Red Pandas to a 12-1 regular season record two NSCF editions ago, sits at the QB3 position.

RB: #30 Gregory Silk / #38 Chase Okoma

The retirement of the powerful Noah Sherman last season has elevated the speedy Silk to the starting RB position, with new recruit Chase Okoma now the one handling third down situations.

FB: #33 Nico Jackson / #32 Marco Jackson

The pass-catching Jackson brothers remain on fullback duty. Expect them to be rotated as starters every game, but Nico, the elder, will take the field first for Matchday 1.

The receiving corps is where the Surge truly shine. Deshawn Fredericks, who has made many standout plays for the Surge coming off the bench, enters his first season as a starter; the fast and flashy Moore remains in the slot. Dobler still has the best hands on the team, but prior injuries (not to mention age) seem to be slowing him down. Competing this elite unit are Johns, who is also the primary kick returner; Hall, who played the slot opposite Fredericks in college; and Laney-Seymour, who has broken the tradition of the Richardson Fenrirs being "St. Kanye's RFL team" by being drafted to the Rouyoute Aurora Knights.

However, he has found his heir in Whitlock, fresh out of Queensbridge University, who led the Yeezie collegiate league in sacks during both his junior and senior years. The huge but surprisingly agile Carver remains in the left end spot, and the unstoppable Edison as nose tackle, but now the latter will be backed up by Montrose, who has made significant improvements in his game to climb up the rotation.

But the true standout of this group is Varley, the defensive captain - he can tackle, sack, force fumbles and incompletions, and intercept, among others.

O'Connor starts at cornerback opposite Schwartz, with Quinn being used in the nickel package. The three of them are good at covering opposing receivers, but even more so at getting picks.

Free safety Bradman was the defensive specialist in the Arena Bowl team; he has a great knack for reading and disrupting the other team's offensive strategies. Opposite him in the strong safety position is Law, the best tackler among the secondary.

Rasputin is a deadly combination of distance and accuracy and is almost always guaranteed three (or one) points whenever he steps onto the field. Rasputin's performance in the previous tournaments has gotten many people mentioning his name in discussions about who the best active kicker in the World Bowl would be. The Yeezies rely on punting less than other teams do. but that doesn't mean Florence (who moved one number up to make room for St. Roger and his #10) has lost his importance. He does the kickoffs, and he does it well. Elroy is an excellent long snapper who has been with the team for several cycles now.

The Ardsk Cadets are a professional football team based in Ruska, Ardsk.

The Cadets were founded in 2021 but have never gone to a World Bowl before.

The Cadets are known for their strong defense and ability to run the ball. Their current starting quarterback is David Jeffrey, who is considered to be one of the best quarterbacks in the multiverse. Jeffrey is known for his strong arm and his ability to make plays under pressure.

The Cadets' head coach is Billy Bingham, who is in his first season with the team. Bingham is a former Ardskian international rugby player with a wealth of coaching experience. He is known for his attention to detail and his ability to get the most out of his players.

The Cadets are excited for the World Bowl in 2023. They have a strong roster and are well-coached. They can win the World Bowl if they can stay healthy.

ROSTER / DEPTH CHART
Here's the roster containing the names, numbers, and notes for each player. Players are listed in depth chart order.

This roster is filled with GLD standouts, stalwarts, and all-stars. Every player on this roster is great at what they do, and can be depended on for a regular basis. As far as player rotation goes, the skill position starters will go for a majority of the match barring cases of injury or fatigue. More interchangeable positions, like the linemen on both sides and defenders, can and will be swapped out throughout the game to ensure that they get an appropriate amount of rest. A lot of the players on this roster are specialized, exceptionally good in certain situations. Those players are prioritized in those downs and scenarios as necessary, even if they're normally at the bottom of the depth chart.

This will be the first season with Lane Proudfoot playing at starting quarterback. He's a "game managing" type of QB (more specifically, he loves handing the ball off and may or may not be dependable in pass-only situations). If he flounders, then perhaps Lorenzo Foster will get some playing time. Jack Hoy is no longer the go-to running back, he will only be in for make-or-break downs or if the other RBs are gassed. Merit always kicks field goals and Clacher always does kickoffs. Flan always punts, unless big yardage is needed, then Clacher punts.

42 Jeffrey Mitchell One of Drawkland's few actually utilized fullbacks. Speedy, reliable, and can lay defenders out.
1 Proko ^ Primarily a Strong Safety. Used in trick plays or stacked backfield formations. Good hands/carrying.

16 Jackie Morris Top tier route runner. Great timing and hands, great at sideline catches, but average speed.
88 Kenneth Hewitt Big target. Tall but not slow, makes 50/50 balls look like 90/10. Best deep threat.

89 Silvio Norwood Another big target with some considerable speed. Surprisingly great route runner for his size.
86 Austin Sixtus * Speedy, flashy receiver with a penchant for big plays. Not as dependable for extended drives.

STRATEGY
The name of the game for the Grid Corps is aggression and power.

The offense of the Grid Corps is balanced, splitting up responsibilities for yardage between running and passing plays. None is really favored over the other, since everybody on the team is good, but in crucial situations, they're likely to pass more than run (although running is still used to keep the defense honest). The base formation is the shotgun, although the singleback, pistol, and sometimes I are still common. Most shotgun plays are run from a single RB set, although having a FB or another RB in the backfield isn't out of the ordinary. The most common personnel is RB-TE-WR-WR-WR, but the Corps is willing to mix any amount of personnel thanks to the depth and skill at their disposal.

Most running plays are either inside the tackles or just outside them. Stretch runs are rare unless the blocking is on point, or the opposing defense can't stop them. Zone running and power running are evenly split. Fullback-led runs are also very common, especially on third down and in the red zone. A very common play is a triple option out of the I formation: it could be a fullback handoff, a halfback pitch, or a quarterback keeper. The Wildcat formation always shows up a couple times a game, especially if the opposing defense can't stop it. Passing plays have a lot of elements, not necessarily a vertical offense but not necessarily a conservative one either. Deep routes are thrown relatively often to keep the defense honest thanks to the incredible QB and WR talent available. When the game is tight, the Corps is excellent at the hurry-up offense, having a deep playbook to constantly keep the defense off guard.

The defense is also aggressive. Blitzing is very, very common, as the defense is fearless. Even on non-blitz plays, the defensive linemen go all out. Man blitzes on first down are a regularity, especially if it's working. When an opposing offense is stuck inside the five, the Corps will likely come out with everyone except the defensive backs blitzing. Scoring safeties are the pride of the Grid Corps, and thus they'll go for it as much as possible. They'll also pack the line on the other goalline inside the five, but if a team is 3rd/4th and Goal outside of the 7 or 8, they're likely to just pack the end zone with as many defensive backs as possible. When not in goalline formation, they'll usually opt for a 4-man rush. 4-3 and Nickel defenses are Corps staples, unless the situation calls for a change in strategy (obviously). The Corps runs both man and zone evenly, but prefers Cover 2 man. Usually they'll start with man coverage until the team they're playing shows proficiency in beating man, then they'll switch to zone with man and the trademark blitzes thrown in. Zone blitzes on crucial third downs have been known to happen. In all, they aren't afraid to take chances in big spots and bring pressure.

Special teams for the Grid Corps is prone to fake plays. Whether it's a misleading kick return (moving all the blockers to the opposite side of the field from where the ball is going), lateral returns even when the game doesn't depend on it, passes or runs from special teams formations, the Corps practices it all. In addition, the defensive special teams is highly aggressive. Rushing on punt returns, super fast kick blocks, or even line hurdling to block kicks. This is made much easier by the physiology of the Corps of course. David Merit will always do placekicks, Tristan Clacher will always do kickoffs, and Jared Flan will always punt, unless injuries occur. Clacher can also do punts in situations where we need a big yardage kick.

The Corps often opts for two-points conversions for their first few touchdowns. In a blowout win, they'll likely shift to normal PATs after the half. Obviously, they'll go for PATs when the game situation overwhelmingly demands it. The playbook is deep and the number of dynamic playmakers means that two point conversion plays are plentiful and well-rehearsed, hence why they're pretty fearless going for it.

PHYSIOLOGY
I recommend you read this. It contains important information on how Drawkians are different from your average human. In a nutshell, they're over 7 feet tall on average, and have larger proportions to match. They're also lankier and less stocky all-around, but that doesn't mean some like a D-tackle can't get thick and muscular, it's not just not the average build. This may conflict with some of your RPing preferences or make it harder to RP about us, so you're free to just ignore that and pretend we're the same as humans. That's completely your call, and I don't mind it either way.

VENUE

For group stage home games, Drawkland will be playing in Metro Arena, the 150,000 seat indoor gridiron stadium in the heart of Metropolon, Drawkland's capital.

"Introducing #3"

The scout leaned forward in his bleacher seat and set his jaw. He’d always enjoyed traveling and evaluating talent, hence why he picked this line of work. Ironically, he hated the noise and the crowds. In this moment, the crowd was at its loudest, parents, students, and other fans clapping and stomping.

It was the bottom of the ninth. Two outs. North Craggold High, on the edges of downtown Sadeg, was trying to complete a comeback win against Hellenmack Prep, a venerated private school from the city of the same name which was universally despised by every high school in the Sadeg area. The home team was facing a one-run deficit, but had both the tying and winning runs in scoring position. Though the scout had been taking notes on most players from both rosters, the one that he’d really come to see was striding to the plate with a cool confidence few could show in such a scenario.

“Now batting for the Wolves!” The PA announcer voice strained from the tinny high school stadium speakers, “The right fielder, number 3 … Brooklyn Beck!”

The announcement brought another wave of cheers through the crowd, and a quieter but still noticeable flurry of boos from the visiting fans scattered throughout the stands. The scout gritted his teeth and looked down to make sure he was on the right entry.

Good hitter, reasonable plate discipline with room for improvement. Short but powerful leg kick, excellent power for a female player.

The scout looked back up to see Brooklyn take an inside fastball for a strike. As if this moment needed any more pressure, it also happened to be the high school district tournament finals. The winner of this game would go on to play in the Territorial Tournament against the four other champions in the territory of Iarocavet, along with winning immense bragging rights over every school in a hundred-mile radius. These teams were good, and that was yet another reason the scout was present at this matchup. Brooklyn took a curveball in the dirt to even the count.

Poise under pressure, the scout added to his notes. From the outside at least, it seemed that the young Drawkian was approaching this like any other at-bat. The 1-1 pitch came in … and Brooklyn promptly lined it into the left-center gap. The ball shot off like a laser and fell quickly, both runners taking off and guaranteed to score. Brooklyn triumphantly flicked her bat and sprinted to first base with a pumped fist. Once she touched the bag, the second runner crossed the plate to complete the walkoff, and the game was over. The North Craggold Wolves stormed the field and mobbed their hero while the crowd cheered as loud as they had all afternoon.

Flair for the dramatic, the scout quickly typed, and he packed up his operation posthaste. Any longer in that fever pitch and he’d get a nasty migraine for weeks. One thing was for sure, Brooklyn Beck was the real deal. That 2-RBI walkoff single completed a 4-for-5 game with two extra base hits including a homer, and she made a few excellent plays in right field to boot. Colleges were going to be chomping at the bit to get her to commit, and she’d just finished her junior year. Surely this would result in zero drama whatsoever.

The merrymaking on the grounds of North Craggold High went on for a good half hour after Brooklyn’s winning hit, and continued on elsewhere for the next several hours. Most of the team went on to enjoy ice cream, with Brooklyn among them, but eventually the sun sank low in the summer sky and it was time for everyone to head home and shower off all the sweat and stink.

Brooklyn sat in the car, riding shotgun alongside her mother, Elie. Her dad, the illustrious Dustin Beck, had driven separately to the game and gone home right after the game ended on account of his tiredness. He didn’t like to show it, but the wear and tear of playing so many games of gridiron had taken some toll on his health. Though he’d retired from World Bowl play two years prior, and professional play as a whole the year after that, he still grew tired much quicker than he used to. Football is a brutal game, even as a quarterback, especially with a long career and playing twice as many games every other year on account of the national team. Thus, Brooklyn and her mom drove with just each other as they navigated the ancient winding streets of Sadeg.

“I bet you’re feeling pretty tired, huh?” Elie asked after a few minutes of relative silence.

“Hm?” Brooklyn looked up from her phone. “Not that tired, honestly. Baseball isn’t that bad unless I’m pitching. Standing out in right field isn’t as bad.”

“Well that’s good.” Elie paused, and smirked a bit. “Especially because you have that track meet on Saturday.”

“The what? Aw crud,” Brooklyn groaned in realization. She’d been focused all week on preparing for this huge game that she’d completely forgotten about the track and field All-District Finals coming that weekend.

“What are you running for that, again?” Elie asked earnestly. “200 and hurdles, right?”

“No, just the 200.” Brooklyn huffed. “Coach won’t let me do hurdles at All-District because I’ve been missing all these practices to do baseball instead. I mean, I’m technically an alternate, but I know nobody is going to be missing this weekend.”

“I feel like that’s fair.” Elie shrugged. “It’s tough to be a five-point athlete. You know at least one of the sports is going to get the shaft.”

“Yeah.” Brooklyn replied, and she trailed off. For a long moment she hesitated, considering something that she’d be chewing on for the last couple months. “I don’t know …”

“You don’t know what?” Elie cocked an eyebrow, detecting the change in Brooklyn’s tone immediately.

“Honestly, I don’t know if I want to do track next year,” Brooklyn replied carefully. “I know it’s helping my running splits but it just feels like such a waste of time lately. I’m not going to do it in college anyway.”

“Save it.” Elie put a hand up to pause her daughter. “I’m not the one you have to convince.”

“Right.” Brooklyn sighed. “But Dad always gets so uptight about this stuff! Remember the whole catastrophe when I wanted to quit soccer last year?”

“That was a little different. You went on a whole tirade about it because you’d just been demoted to JV for a couple weeks. It was clearly just frustration from that situation, of course he wasn’t taking you seriously. Not to mention you got back to varsity later that month anyway, making your outburst a little pointless.”

“Whatever,” Brooklyn conceded. “I was technically right anyway. I already got my star point and I only do soccer for endurance training.”

“No, you hadn’t got your point yet, you had to complete the season, remember?” Elie hung a left turn to enter their neighborhood, meaning they were just minutes from home. “Either way, begging to quit right after getting demoted was not a good look. Listen, if you don’t want to do track next year, that’s fine by me. I feel like you have a good case here, too. You just need to make that case in a rational fashion. I’m on your side, you know.”

“I’d appreciate some real help then,” Brooklyn replied shortly.

“The best thing you can do to help yourself is keep a good attitude and run your ass off at District this weekend. Show that it’s not just a motivation issue, okay Brookie?”

“I’ll see what I can do. Thanks Mom.”

When the pair got home, they found Dustin Beck laid out on the couch. The TV was tuned to DNSN, which was currently showing some talk show between sports personalities debating the narratives of the day. Dustin was absorbing none of it, as he was snoring loudly with his hands folded over his stomach. It was funny, at that moment he didn’t look like some future Hall of Fame quarterback, but just any regular dad.

“Hey, you.” Elie said, poking Dustin in the shoulder. He awoke with a start.

“Huh?” Dustin blinked a couple times and focused his eyes on his wife. “What’s up? Everything go fine at the ice cream place?”

“Yup. Just letting you know that we’re home.” Elie took a look around the spacious living room. The Beck abode wasn’t extravagant, but it was a nice piece of real estate. “I’m probably gonna go to bed once I’m cleaned up.”

“Sure. I’ll join you in a bit,” Dustin yawned.

Elie turned to head upstairs, leaving Brooklyn standing at the edge of the room.

“Sup BB?” Dustin asked, looking over at his daughter.

“Just chilling.” Brooklyn stepped closer, eventually taking a seat on one of the other couches.

“Something on your mind?” Dustin sat up somewhat, still reclined, but a little more awake now.

“Uh, not really,” Brooklyn lied. She suddenly had a thought to move the conversation. “Oh yeah, am I coming with you to Metropolon next week?”

“Metropolon, huh?” Dustin recalled what Brooklyn was talking about. The pre-tournament camp for the Grid Corps was set to begin after that weekend, and though Dustin was no longer on the roster, he was going to attend for the first few days. Officially it was to pump up the roster and share some thoughts with the coaching staff, but it was mostly so he had an excuse to hang out with some of his old teammates.

“Well, school is out now,” Brooklyn added quickly. “And I won’t have any practice for a few days after this weekend, so I have nothing else to do.”

“I see …” Dustin furrowed his brow, considering the notion. “Wait, won’t you have track practice or something? Maybe not the first day back because of the meet, but you should probably attend something since you won’t have baseball in the way.”

“I don’t think that’ll be necessary.” Brooklyn hesitated. “I’m only running the 200 at Districts anyway, Coach told me. If we end up advancing to the Territory meet then I’m not sure I’ll even make the roster for the trip.”

“No 400? Not even the hurdles?” Dustin propped himself on an elbow to look at his daughter more level.

“Just an alternate for hurdles. They don’t want me taking a spot from the girls who are at practice every day.”

“Ah.” Dustin shrugged. “That makes sense, I suppose.”

“Yup.” Brooklyn said. She hesitated, wondering if she should bring up her misgivings about doing track for her senior year, but before she could make a choice, her dad spoke up again.

“Well, I don’t see any issue with bringing you to Metropolon with you. I’m sure Uncle Jack would be thrilled to see you, after all.”

“Yay!” Brooklyn grinned. She loved traveling, and she usually enjoyed the time spent around the Grid Corps. At least that was something to look forward to.

“Alright, I’ll make sure I have a second ticket.” Dustin gave a thumbs up, then wrinkled his nose. “You should go and take a shower, dude. I can’t believe you’re sitting on my sofa with those dirty-ass pants, either.”

“Oh, my apologies, your majesty,” Brooklyn replied sarcastically, standing and dramatically wiping off the couch with her hand. “Night, Dad!” She offered on her way towards the stairs.

“Night, BB. Good hitting tonight.” Dustin called back, before settling back into his resting position on the couch. Within a couple minutes, he was snoring again.

Rouyoute World Bowl 47 Roster

In Rouyoute's second World Bowl, the team's going to be fielding a crew that, while a bit motley, has talent in some spots and is at the very least equipped with state of the art training facilities and equipment thanks to the royal family's generous (or vain, take your pick) sponsorship.

Offensively, expect a pass first attack that features extremely unconventional schemes. Johansson is an experimenter at heart and sometimes it's brilliant, sometimes it's a route pattern that never should've been invented. Throw in a talented quarterback who has a tendency to switch between generational brilliance and punch-a-hole-in-your-TV boneheadedness and...it's an interesting show. Lots of longer-developing routes thanks to two quality tackles and a mobile QB.

Defensively, the team will rely on its front seven to disrupt the opposition with their sheer size. The team sports several Drawkian or half-Drawkian players and will lean on their physical prowess to give them an edge against this new level of competition.

Team Culture: The Banijans are also well known to be physical, and yet clean, players. While they usually are fairly clean(definitely commit penalties but nothing outwardly dirty, like intentionally injuring players or something), Banijan gridiron culture is extremely proud, and therefore, Banijans are elite smack talkers. They'll talk smack, they'll taunt both opponents and opposing fans, and they'll run up the score, if they are capable. They have a play without fear mentality, and a play to the end mentality- lots of these dudes, stars in their own right, biggest challenge is integrating into a team where they are not at the center. Another challenge, of course, is that both collegiate and professional gridiron rivalries run deep- which can make coming together at the national team level much more difficult in this sport, than it is for Banijan athletes in other sports.

Those challenges can make success difficult at the national team level, as many believe Thomas Hall has 'the toughest job in all of gridiron', to ensure that everybody buys into the common goal, and forgets about themselves as individuals to ensure that they can indeed make this sum greater than the whole of its parts. They've won two titles now- and reeling this team in is going to be the coach's biggest challenge. That said- he's clearly instilled a championship culture in the squad, and they desperately want to put themselves in the World Bowl pantheon by possibly three-peating.

Fan Culture Culture: Banijan fan culture around gridiron embodies some of that of the players. People love to talk smack, and therefore, fans are like that as well. Banijan fans are known as arrogant and proud, and they will show up in droves, in any city, wherever it is, to talk over local bars and support their team, even without tickets. Casinos tend to love Banijan gridiron fans, as they willing to put their money where their mouth is, and bet large sums of money on Banijan gridiron- to their benefit at the last two tournaments. For away games, expect Banijans to travel in large numbers, especially without tickets, and make themselves known in the city. For neutral games, they will certainly have a strong presence.

Head Coach: Thomas Hall(Ranoria). 64 years old. The Olympic Committee of Banija, frustrated with failure after failure of Alastair Jobs, the legendary Loyola coach, after his World Bowl 37 semifinal run, has finally forced Jobs out. The Banijans believe that they have the talent to get into the knockout stages of major tournaments, prepping to make deep WB runs within a tournament or two- whether they should or not, is another question entirely. They also felt they needed a culture change- a coach with a record at the professional level, rather than a college coach.

After searching long and wide, they looked to Ranoria, one of their football rivals, to find a coach. The opposite of Alastair Jobs. As a player, Hall was the career leader in the Ranorian Football League with 62 career interceptions. He had immediately success. The Banijan national team didn't make the knockout stages at either World Bowl 38 or 39, and it was the group stage elimination at the Istria Olympiad that got his predecessor fired. Thomas Hall, however, hit the ground running. Changing the team's focus from a spread 'em out speed team to more of a power team, he went 10-0 in the group stages of World Bowl XL, and took the Serpent Eagles to their first ever World Bowl final.

After a quarterfinal appearance at World Bowl XLI, he said it's time to revamp the team's offense. "We've got stars on the outside with Lamin Kah and Chinweuba Jelan on the outside- we can't let that go to waste." Whereas Banija has been ground and pound for the last two tournaments, expect them to lean more towards spreading around the football and lighting up the scoreboard, to take advantage of the star players they have at the skill positions on offense. However, the revamp hasn't worked thus far, with a quarterfinal elimination to Ranoria at World Bowl XLII, and a stunning first round playoff exit to South Newlandia at World Bowl XLIII.

But he recovered from that quite well. After falling in a shootout against Bongo Johnson on the opening day of World Bowl XLIV, the Serpent Eagles started winning- and they literally didn't lose again, winning 8 group stage games in a row, followed by four more in the knockout stages to bring the damn trophy home. The defensive ace winning behind a high-powered offense- although the defense came up clutch in the semis and the final. Probably a decent chunk of Banijans think he could walk on water, bringing home this long awaited title. "I haven't bought a drink in three years." Coach Hall chuckled.

The title defense was arguably even more impressive. Their top two WRs retiring, their star HB getting to age 32. Returning Ice Chineze with a stable of young, talented, but unproven WRs. And Banija did the exact same thing. They stumbled a couple of times in group play. But when it mattered most, they really got into a flow- a place where they could not be stopped. After getting lit up by South Americanastan on the road, the team played their best gridiron in the knockout stages. Three possesion wins over both TJUN-ia and Drawkland when it was one & done. A 7-6 QF win over the Dragonflies, where we out Ko-oren'd Ko-oren. And defeating Sarai Gwenderyn in the world title game, on her home soil.

It couldn't get better than that. "I haven't bought a drink in six years." He said, smirking. He wants to put Banija into the history books- a threepeat, in this sport, would do just that. He's done everything an elite coach should do. Came in, had a stud defense, revamped the style when the talent went offensive, and they were top of the world.

They aren't quite there yet at this point, however. They went to their third straight World Bowl Final, in Ranoria- and lost in tragic fashion. But they are back, trying to get back to the Summit. Can they reach it again? Or is the Chromatik rise inevitable in this sport?

Offensive Coordinator & Assistant Head Coach: Kopo Bogadi. 53 years old. This dude has been offensive coordinator at the last three World Bowls, where an explosive Banijan offense has powered the nation to two world titles. Bogadi's certainly on the look out for a head coaching - so this might be his last chance coaching as a coordinator.

Other notable Offensive Staff: Former NSCF 14 and NSCF 17 champion, Loyola alum running back Justice Greenspan is the running backs coach. He is 56 years old. 59 year old Ugonna Chioma is the Quarterbacks Coach. 67 year old Uchey Akachi is the Wide Receivers Coach. 66 year old Beluchi Chika is the Offensive Line Coach. And 47 year old Mamadi Diene Jr.(the former offensive coordinator's youngest son) is the Tight Ends Coach.

Defensive Coordinator: David Franklin. 62 years old. David Franklin was a starting middle linebacker on Loyola-Istria's NSCF 14 title team, and he was a defensive captain on Banija's run to the World Bowl XXXVI semifinals. In his fifth World Bowl as D. Coordinator, he's 'completely bonded' with Thomas Hall, as the two have made this defense work time and time again.

While Hall calls the plays, he's still integral to the team's defensive gameplan.

Team Chaplain: Kasozi Batte is a star WR in the NSCF already, and he's just a sophomore. While he's too young to play for the Serpent Eagles, he's been brought on as the team chaplain at just 19 years old- as his passion for all things religion almost certainly means he'll spend his post-football career as a preacher.

Stadium of the Restoration

The Stadium of the Restoration is the country's national stadium, used primarily for both gridiron and association football. It is located in the northern part of Busukuma, Banija's capitol city. It is built between the "northern hills of Busukuma" where Banija's first independence was declared, an event known as the restoration of the Banijan monarchy. It is a revered and hallowed stadium for sports fans throughout the country.

A number of major events have been held here, including two World Bowl Finals, a Baptism of Fire Final, a Cup of Harmony Final, two AOCAF Finals, an IFCF Champions League Final, and the opening matches of two World Cups, as well as two World Cup semifinals. Furthermore, it has hosted multiple NSCF bowl games, as well as the NSCF Championship game. It is also the site of the annual BGFL National Championship Game. It is the regular home stadium for both national football teams, gridiron and association. The stadium, rebuilt shortly before World Cup 81, which Banija co-hosted alongside the Free Republics, has a turf gridiron field that lies underneath the grass soccer field.

Per usual, they will spread their games throughout the country, with home games being played in both Istria and Jinja City as well.

The Cycle

The motto of the team for World Bowl 47 is #FailingUpwards. After entering the 46th edition as the 5th team in the world, hoping to get back to a championship, glory we hadn't tasted for five cycles at that point and well, that's not what we were used to. Where are the days of winning every second World Bowl? Why do we keep losing to Banija in knockout games (we're 0-4: three quarterfinals and a final)? And why do we keep running into Banija in the first place?

Then the Dragonflies won all nine group stage games. Flawless defence. Incredible clock management (a fancy word for 'wasting everyone's time by running the ball when you're ahead'). Never-seen-before domination. This was going to be our cycle: for the first time, national teamers didn't have to play in the domestic league, meaning that every player would now be guaranteed to be on a roster for 12-18 games, meaning we had players with much better stamina and conditioning - and we have more spots in the league to develop young talent. And then... Banija in the quarterfinal.

And yet, despite entering the tournament as the 5th team in the world and finishing somewhere 5th-to-8th, and despite losing a pretty good ranking cycle, and despite all of the other top 10 teams having a pretty good World Bowl... the Dragonflies enter the current tournament as 3rd in the world. Whether that's wildly inflated is up to you (a good answer to start with is 'yes') but the fact stays that the Greenblues are going into this tournament thinking of themselves as contenders. More shutdown defence. More of our cleverly schemed receivers dinking and dunking down the field for 10-minute drives.

The Group

We're getting ready for a nearly unprecedentedly long group stage. Fourteen games - that's pretty much a season. Good thing we came up with that NT'ers-don't-play-in-the-league system for World Bowl 45/46. It means we play seven opponents twice:

Gyatso-Kai - who doesn't look forward to this one? Our biggest rivals in ice hockey - decent overlap between Ko-orenite ice hockey and gridiron fans - and suppliers of our national ice hockey team coach. Nothing but friendliness off the field between our two squads, nothing but vitriol on the field. You would also expect that at this point, we've played nearly every team in a knockout - not Gyatso-Kai. We're 0-0 in 'games that matter' as we call them. The blank-ish-est slate possible for a team we know so well, on and off the grid.

Saint Kanye - who doesn't look forward to this one? We've met before in a semifinal, in World Bowl 41, and though meetings between our two national teams (particularly in basketball) aren't as frequent as they once were, it's a team we have a lot of respect for. I'mma let you finish, but the next team in the list has been on our schedule far more in the past.

Cassadaigua - who doesn't look forward to this one? Uhh, and how exactly did they end up in 15th? We lost a Round of 16 game to them last cycle - and if we can go from 5th to 3rd by losing an early knockout game, how do they not go from like 20th to 2nd by winning one? Either way, apart from three knockout games between us, we also met in the group stage last time. Not that we're sick of playing them: each game is down to the wire and builds on top of an increasing pyramid of history.

Rouyoute - who doesn't look forward to this one? Rouyoute, uhh, are a team in their second ever cycle. They pass a lot. We look forward to some of those ending up in the hands of our defensive backs. They'll keep us on our toes as much as we challenge them: both offences are a bit unorthodox without being outright risky. There's no avoiding the occasional pants-on-head stupid play though, and that goes for both of us.

Cardenao, Saint-Jean-Jacques et Burnham-on-Stove - who doesn't look forward to these? Anaians through and through: the little lime green crown on purple will probably show on signs and flags for these games. We can see Cardenao go pretty far and we're kind of scratching our heads how they've never been in a Bowl before, and for the latter we're kind of scratching our heads wondering how to refer to SJJBOS without breaking a keyboard. Both have been kind of scary in CAFAs as we hope that Anaia will be some kind of power in this sport beyond Chromatika and us.

A Place Somewhere - who doesn't look forward to this one? Time: known. Location: unknown.

The Team
The Offence runs entirely on versatility of its skill positions. Hardman hasn't called trick plays in a while and likely won't for this Bowl, but still expects a lot of intelligence from all of his players to run the offence. The linemen mostly line up as expected, with the odd pull for a guard/tackle, but the centre has a very tough job (hence Gavreau returning, who knows this offence better than anyone except maybe Hardman himself) calling out protections for wildly diverging plays and packages.

The standard is something like 21 personnel, but don't expect that to show up in even 50% of plays. The backs are aging rapidly but still capable of quite a decent workload, with Galway, luckily without big injuries throughout his career, able to rush 15+ times per game. Thorebourne still adds a lot of flair, Jurethen remains elusive - though all a bit less than in years past. Readhallow is the only young addition and is a huge addition for cut blocks and changing plays on the line, but carries some power through tackles as well.

We expect a reduced workload for the tight ends. Zyutara and Schemering are effectively 6th linemen who may jump out for a short gain through the air, and Voorhorst and Shanigunten are genuine receiving threats. Shanigunten is quite limited in his range but even when you know what he's doing, it's difficult to stop.

After years of a severely limited receiving corps, we finally have some good stuff to look forward to. With old backs and limited tight ends, Hardman will probably get a lot of fun and utility out of these guys, and having 3, 4, or even 5 receivers on the field in a play won't be too strange. Nearly every play can be run from any alignment, and Gasbeek, Welsh, Costigan, and Dauzigun all carry a mean block - remember, these guys were selected for intelligence and utility rather than diva personalities. Ouimet is the shiny new toy with both verticality, height, and great hands, and Marineau is similarly great on deep throws. Gasbeek and Welsh have stamina for days, Costigan and Porden have moves, and Dauzigun and Crossket are creative little sh*ts to ruin your day between zones.

And then we haven't mentioned the quarterbacks! Masman should be starting, but all could be playing drives every game. Masman has a good balance between sticking to the plan and taking risks, Bodkin has a slightly better arm but doesn't use it as often, and Ingdon is a fantastic option for chunk plays and covering long distances in short amounts of time.

The Defence is the good part. The magic happens here. Setting up short fields for the offence and getting the ball back, that's what they do. Versatility and utility are valued here as well, and so there's a healthy mix of 4-3 and 3-4, zone and man - sometimes in the same play - and plenty of 5 DB formations as well. Incredibly hard to read and well-communicated, quarterbacks will have a challenge every single play, even on short, simple, designed throws.

The line has often been overlooked but has been buffed quite a bit. Foy is an adventurous nose tackle and Yellowcott is also more athletic than given credit for, and so there's not always a clear anchor point in the 3-4. That's why you'll see some weird alignments a bit more, with the LDs and RDs (interior defensive linemen) picking up most of the running lanes. The Ends (LE and RE) can pass rush but are now often used as cutback men, lane clogging, stunters, etcetera. What has been improved more than anything is the pass rush, for which we have the blitzers (BZ) - that doesn't mean they're the only ones to get into the backfield, or that they're the only ones blitzing (far from it). It's just that they are the best sack artists we have.

The linebackers, which we like to have a lot of on the field, have to be all-rounders. The WB and OB (weak-side and outside linebackers) are better in coverage, the SB, MB, and IB (strong-side, middle, and inside linebackers) counter the run without sacrificing their anti-air duties too much. The team will still be a bit light against the run but not as much as in years past - that means there'll be more opportunities through the air for opposing quarterbacks, particularly in the intermediate areas. Ramsbottom returns as the signalcaller, Hirate and Dejarnette are new additions that were sorely needed, and the rest are pretty clever in their lining up and hiding their intentions for their assignment.

The defensive backs are probably the best in the world. The cornerbacks tend to stick to the best receivers to take them out of the game - it's not often that we run into teams that have 3+ brilliant receivers, and even if you have those, have fun. The safeties cover a huge part of the field and do so with linebacker help, where the free safeties have gotten a reputation for interceptions. Aurisea especially so.

A somewhat new part are the nickel- and dimebacks (NB, DB) which are mostly utility players and could even play linebacker in obvious passing situations. They're all quite new to the team and bring some spice and surprise.

In General it's about stability, reliability, versatility, and surprise without overthinking it. Your receivers will be covered, and throwing to them, especially deep, is usually a bad idea - but even we're not perfect. Some parts of the roster are aging and in need of repair, while others have been added/selected to cover exactly that gap - the NBs, DBs, BZs. A big change will be from running to passing on offence.

We would include diagrams of plays and alignments, but they would be pretty unhelpful. We're all about jarring differences between pre-snap and post-snap looks, on offence and defence.

The Stadiums
i) Accounting for seven home games;
ii) Considering we have twelve venues used in the professional league;
a) Noting that the twelve venues are across eleven cities and no city will get two venues in the World Bowl;
iii) Proliferating the policy to spread home games across the country as much as possible;
a) Noting that gridiron is one of two sports enjoyed so widely across the archipelago;
iv) Presenting the seven venues;

Game 1 v Cassadaigua
Stade sur la Baie (70000), Amahne (Aminey): The Stade sur la Baie is the largest stadium in Ko-oren. Two rings with various shades of blue seating with plenty of modern amenities - that are kept up to date every few years with minor renovations. Between the rings, there is an entire deck/ring for the (rich and) famous, allowing for maximum 'see and be seen' influencer/celebrity clout. Also between the rings, there's an entire deck/ring of sponsor seating. The bottom ring is moveable up to a few metres to allow for a running track, but that configuration won't show up for the World Bowl. The bottom ring can also be extended further down which allows fans to be surprisingly close to the action (but that lowest ring of bleachers is removed for Gridiron and their large benches/team areas). Most of the upper deck is shielded from the weather through canvas roofing.

It's home to the Aminey Caspians, proudly one of the oldest teams of the league, located in a city that's central to Ko-oren's modern development, the seat of our democracy - Ko-oren is a meritocracy with some democratic elements due to the efforts from here. It's also the entertainment city, with its iconic location draped along the coast and over the cape on the bay, with literature, theatre, and music as influential as it gets for our small archipelago.

Game 2 v Cardenao
Surbourneshire Square (65000), Garihnkatar (Greencaster): Once emerging as a small, suburban ground, they added stands (mostly standing-only) as the fans flocked in while the harbour grew. A few renovations here and there have taken care of the biggest safety violations. It's currently a multi-use stadium for football, gridiron, and rugby. Some sections are roofed.

It's home to the Greencaster Godspeed, who still feel like a modern addition to the league despite having been here since nearly the start of the entire thing. Garihnkatar is the harbour city, responsible for handling most of the cargo going in or out of the country. From the affluent northern suburbs to the sprawl along the coast, there's always something to do, and it never feels polished.

Game 3 v Rouyoute
Orange Bowl (54000), Shemurdar (Schemerdrecht): A huge concrete bowl with orange seating. A hell in summer - Shemurdar is located further south than you'd imagine - but a really good viewing experience and a fantastic fan experience in and around the stadium. The noise is amplified a fair bit, which works pretty well with the traditional stadium chants and instruments.

Shemurdar is the largest city in the north, though it's quite far removed from what most people would consider the north. It's a city that's as well rounded as Garihnkatar (Greencaster), Ilohbonu (Willowbourne), or Katahshi (Katashi) but doesn't always get the respect for the amenities it has. A smaller harbour than the rest, fewer travel options than the rest, and not as big a cultural output - and yet Shemurdar has a bit of everything and shouldn't be overlooked.

Game 4 v A Place Somewhere
Hertfield (33000), Marapsathi (Mawrystwyth): Built to keep the wind out but allow the rain in, so you can throw and kick in gridiron and rugby, but you still get that quintessential west coast weather. The Hertfield is in the middle of a park, which itself is the middle of the city centre. No way about it - if you go to this city, you'll run into the stadium, with the park home to a lot of activities. The partially wooden construction stands out but mostly keeps with the local architecture.

In the far southwest, it took a while for Marapsathi to find its voice. It's a great place to stay if you want a city to fall back on but you also want to explore Ko-oren's wild southwest and you don't want to run into too many people. The city is home to a lot of small celebrations and festivals, though.

Game 5 v Gyatso-Kai
Exhibition Centre (41000), Majara (Mayara): Suited for gridiron and soccer, the Exhibition Centre is part of a huge, almost Expo-ready venue, effectively forming a mini-town outside Majara. It's used for concerts and anything else that you might need a place that seats thousands. A taste of Koroa City right here in Ko-oren.

Majara is one of the four capitals. There's Gehrenna (the 'northern fortress'), Senoren (the 'palace of paper'), and Maethoru (the 'gateway') and they all have an identity of their own, and in that case, Majara's the public square. A meeting place for government and others. Lots of policies start here.

Game 6 v Saint Kanye
Northern Arena (32000), Aebanna (Aevanna): A fully domed stadium that is showing signs of age but has found some creative ways to stay up to date as far as the building code is concerned, it mostly keeps the frigid weather out. Mostly.

The largest city in the northeast, they love to claim the title of 'northern capital' from Shemurdar. And yet, it's not taken too seriously. Aebanna and its islands are a source of a lot of traditional Ko-orenite winter cooking, and it's a pretty popular destination in our immense domestic tourism business, but to be honest the city itself has not too much to offer, on account of all the fun and shows taking place indoors.

Game 7 v Saint-Jean-Jacques et Burnham-on-Stove
Willowbowl (55000), Ilohbonu (Willowbourne): Not the first bowl introduced for this tournament, but the stadium is packed in between other tall buildings in the business district. Arguably a bit of a hell to get to for a town that's so into transport and logistics, the stadium itself lends itself pretty well for a full day out, with a sports museum and areas to try out some skills yourself.

Ilohbonu is the second-largest city of the country and mostly got its growth in the last 70-80 years as a logistics hub. Perfectly situated between the breadbasket in the east/southeast, the harbour of Garihnkatar in the south, Amahne as the cultural entertainment capital in the northeast, and the capitals in the northwest, for all of the densely populated bits of the country, you'll probably have to go through here to get anywhere. The nation's main international airport is here as well, and that combination attracted a lot of business, and now Ilohbonu is our financial capital.

Part of "The Gardens", New Washington's sporting complex, the Field of Dreams marked the debut of the NAU Zone in hosting U3 international competition. The main purpose of the Field of Dreams was to create an atmosphere where chaos lived and upsets can be made, a fact that was backed up in Game 1 with the "Block 6" over Cassadiagua and the "Kick 6" in the rematch a year later. Those plays were further ingrained into the minds of TJUN-ians due to the fact that seats had direct access to the field, allowing the fans to storm it and celebrate with their heroes.

"The Corps Camp"

The All-District track and field meet actually went surprisingly well for Brooklyn Beck, all things considered. She debated arriving to the meet late, since her 200 meter dash event was usually on the latter half of the schedule, but her father Dustin Beck insisted that they arrive bright and early like the rest of the team. After all, Brooklyn was already in hot water with the coach for skipping track practices in favor of varsity baseball activities; she didn’t need to make it worse by showing up late to the biggest meet of the season thus far.

This ended up being a great decision. One of the runners for North Craggold High (Brooklyn’s school) injured her foot and ankle on the 100 meter hurdles early in the day, knocking her out of commission for her other event, the 300 meter hurdles. By great fortune, Brooklyn happened to be the first alternate for the hurdles, putting her in position to run in the event herself. She made the most of it, qualifying out of the heats for the final. She only placed seventh in the final, but considering she didn’t know she’d be running in the race until an hour prior, it was not a bad performance at all.

There was just enough time for Brooklyn to cool down and warm back up for her main event in the 200 meter dash. With some residual adrenaline still bouncing around inside her and the nerves calmed down by having run already, she ripped through the heats and qualified for the final with ease. At that point, she was just happy to have put together a good performance, so the pressure was off for the 200 Meter finale. She still took the race seriously and burned across the half lap, narrowly placing second to a girl from some high school in Cajel.

Overall, it was a great time, and Brooklyn almost felt silly for how much she’d been dreading the occasion. North Craggold ended up finishing third at the meet, which just narrowly missed the cutoff for qualification to the All-Territory meet. Of course the team was bummed out, but their coach reminded them that they still put on a great performance that they could all be proud of. Brooklyn was just glad that track season was officially over for her. Now she could focus solely on baseball, and after that, enjoy what little free time she’d get that summer.

Two days later, Brooklyn and Dustin Beck were zooming through the airway on the way to Metropolon from Sadeg. Originally, Dustin was planning to just take an airline flight to the Drawkian capital, but he figured the self-driving magnetic flying car would be a better choice, now that Brooklyn was coming along. It gave them extra dad-daughter bonding time, and also prevented Brooklyn from potentially being caught in an awkward situation if Dustin got recognized and mobbed in public, as was sometimes the case.

Sadeg wasn’t very far from Metropolon, especially with the high speed cars on the airway were able to employ. In a few short hours the Becks (minus Elie, who had work) touched down in the parking lot of Metro Arena, the home of the Metropolon Underrunners gridiron team and Drawkland’s national team.

“Alright, we’ll try to avoid a grand entrance,” Dustin explained to Brooklyn as they traveled through the corridors underneath the stadium towards the player’s clubhouse. “I don’t want this day to be about me. I’m retired, after all.”

“If you didn’t want to be the center of attention, why did you even come here at all?” Brooklyn teased.

“Smartass,” Dustin retorted, but he smiled. “Just wanted to say hello to some of the boys. Plus, I need to speak with Coach Romano about some strategy things.”

“Uh huh,” Brooklyn replied. “And what am I supposed to do? Just hang out and look pretty?”

“Gross. And I dunno, maybe we could have you help with some drills or something. Or you can sit in the stands and watch. Not sure anybody else is here, so you’ll have the whole stadium to yourself. Oh, here we are,” Dustin said suddenly as they approached a nondescript door in the concrete hallway. “This is the side entrance to the clubhouse. Not many people mill around on this end. The best part is that it’s right next to the QB lockers. Shh!”

Dustin carefully nudged open the door. To his relief, there were plenty of players around in the clubhouse, with a dull roar of conversation and reunion providing perfect cover for the Becks to slip in undetected.

“Alright, just sit tight right here. I need to find a couple people.” Dustin motioned to the lounge chairs nearby. “If anybody recognizes you and asks where I am, just tell them I’m around somewhere.”

“Okay Dad,” Brooklyn shrugged and took a seat. She kicked her feet up on the small table in front of her as Dustin sidled around the edge of the room and out of sight. She’d been to almost all the Grid Corps games in the past two or three cycles, but she rarely got the opportunity to be in the clubhouse itself. Still, Dustin had dragged her around plenty of times as a kid, so lots of the players knew her by name. None of them took any notice of her this time; most were content to greet their fellow players, as this was the beginning of the new World Bowl season.

Brooklyn decided to scroll on her phone for a bit to pass the time, but somebody approached in her peripheral vision. She looked up, and saw a face that was sort of familiar.

“Hey, you don’t look like a member of the Corps,” the man said with narrowed eyes, but his face didn’t appear angry. He was younger, clearly not a rookie but he was no grizzled veteran either. “Oh wait, I know you. You’re Dustin’s kid, right?”

“Yeah, my name’s Brooklyn.”

“Brooklyn! Of course.” The man grinned in recognition, then extended his hand. “My name’s Lane Proudfoot, nice to meet you.”

“Nice to meet you too … QB1?” Brooklyn shook Lane’s hand and cocked an eyebrow. With her father retiring, Proudfoot was now the presumed starting quarterback for the national team.

“Apparently so.” Lane returned the shake, then rolled his shoulders. “Not thrilled about it, but we’ll see how this cycle goes.”

“Wow,” Brooklyn replied dryly. “You’re filling me with a lot of confidence here.”

“Oh really? I can fill y- uh, never mind,” Lane started and immediately caught himself. He felt death looming behind him.

“Proudfoot!” Dustin bellowed. He had returned, with Jack Hoy and Leo Cross in tow. He clamped a hand hard on Lane’s shoulder with a steely expression. “Good to see you again. I suppose you’ve just met my daughter?” He added extra emphasis to the last two words.

“Ah, yes.” Lane attempted to wiggle out of Dustin’s iron grip. “Wonderful lass, she is. Got your sense of sarcasm too, I think.”

“Damn right she does,” Dustin replied immediately. He pulled his arm but didn’t loosen his grip, turning Lane slightly to face him. “I think I saw Kimbrough over on the other side of the room, have you seen him yet? You Cavsar alumni are always very fond of each other.”

“I suppose I can say hello,” Lane shuddered, and he slipped out of Dustin’s grasp. He had actually met his fellow Gladiator grad on the way into the stadium, but he was not going to squander the chance to get as far away from Beck as possible.

“What was all that about?” Brooklyn asked, a little confused. Her father was sometimes hard on her, but he was chill most of the time. She rarely saw him aggressive like that.

“Wow, I almost never get to see you in ‘Dad Mode!’ You were kinda scary there!” Jack Hoy piped up, drowning out Brooklyn’s question.

“Shut up.” Dustin rolled his eyes. “Anyway, say hi to Brooklyn, you two. Decided to bring her along today.”

“Beebs!” Jack exclaimed, extending his knuckles for a fist bump, which Brooklyn obliged.

“How’s it going, Uncle Jack?” Brooklyn asked with a smile. The running back wasn’t related to her by blood of course, but he was close friends with Dustin and was around the Becks often enough to be given the honorary title.

“Chillin’. Oh! I got something for you. Hold on,” Jack looked around and dashed back to wherever his locker was located.

“Oh great, another resident for The Jack Box,” Brooklyn shot a look at her dad as she stood up from her seat. They both laughed. Jack was fond of giving Brooklyn gifts, but not many of them were worth displaying or keeping outside of a cardboard box.

“Good to see you again, Brooklyn.” Leo slid over and gave her a side hug. Brooklyn was pretty tall for a Drawkian, but even she was a head shorter than the hulking form of the defensive end.

“I’m back!” Jack zipped into view, holding something behind his back. He brought his hands around to reveal an upright oblong box wrapped in a brown paper bag. “Here you go Beebs!”

“Wooooow,” Brooklyn put on her best mock enthusiasm. She tore open the bag and pulled out the box, which had a picture of Jack Hoy grinning widely on the front. “What could this be?”

“Open it, open it!” Jack said giddily.

Brooklyn popped open the box and slid out the contents. It was a Jack Hoy bobblehead, decked out in his RFL Redwolves uniform and wearing an enormously toothy grin. Jack had signed the base of the bobble with a marker.

“I picked it up from one of Fiston’s giveaways last season. I realized that you didn’t have any of my merch since I moved to Ranoria. Obviously this had to be remedied!”

“Thaaaanks Uncle Jaaaack,” Brooklyn replied with a smile cheesy enough to match the bobblehead’s, but Jack didn’t seem to care about the sarcasm.

“Jack, you really don’t have to keep getting her this stuff. I know my house is big but we’re gonna run out of room at this rate,” Dustin said.

“Oh come on,” Jack groaned. “It’s just a keepsake, no harm in that! Plus, it’s a collector’s item. Could be worth a lot of money someday!” Jack pointed at his signature.

“Y’know Jack,” Brooklyn said suddenly, cracking a small but devious grin. “If you sign all this stuff willy-nilly, and also never die because you’re immortal, won’t your signed memorabilia be essentially worthless after a while?”

“No, not at all! Well, maybe, um …” Jack stopped in his tracks, suddenly furrowing his brow in thought. It almost looked painful. “Hmm … I may have miscalculated something here …”

The other three broke into laughter at the running back’s expense.

“Alright you guys, can you keep Brooklyn company for a little bit while I talk to Romano?” Dustin asked, clapping Jack on the back.

“Sure thing,” said Leo.

“And …” Dustin leaned in to murmur in Jack’s ear. “Keep that creep Proudfoot away from my kid, alright?”

“Yes, sir!” Jack replied, breaking into an exaggerated military salute and standing at attention.

“Excellent. Leo, keep Jack from doing anything stupid,” Dustin added as he walked towards the coaching office.

“On it,” Leo said, and he promptly wrapped Jack in an enormous bear hug to keep the running back from moving. Brooklyn giggled at the antics while Jack struggled to escape.

“Unhand me, you fiend! I have a sacred duty to uphold!”

A couple hours later, the Grid Corps eventually got onto the turf at Metro Arena and started a light practice. The new invites to the roster were being shown the ropes for typical national team standards in practice and such, while the other veterans went through the motions.

Brooklyn didn’t feel like sitting in a seat the whole time, so she tagged along with Jack and Leo for most of the practice. Jack and Leo were both members of the roster, but the pair had decided after Dustin’s retirement to take more backseat roles on the team. After all, being immortal and in their physical prime forever would steal the opportunity of mortal players to show their skills on the national team. They had long careers and plenty of good moments, so now they’d mostly be backup or emergency options when an explosive play was really needed. As far as practice was concerned, they were mostly assisting the coaching staff while doing a couple reps themselves.

Jack and Brooklyn were setting up cones for a skill position agility drill when Jack asked a question out of the blue.

“So, Beebs, got any clue where you’re going to college yet?”

“Uh …” Brooklyn hesitated. “I haven’t really been thinking about that yet. Been so focused on just doing my thing, and I haven’t gotten any serious offers yet. Well, some schools have been sending stuff since I’ve been in middle school, but we’ve been ignoring those.”

“Makes sense, makes sense.” Jack nodded. “Do you know what sport you’re shooting for? You’re a five-pointer so you have all those options open for ya.”

“Well I’m sure not gonna do soccer or track,” Brooklyn started. “I’ve only done those for the points and the fitness aspect.”

“Ah, so deciding between basketball and baseball then?” Jack asked innocently.

“Kinda.” Brooklyn said sheepishly. “I’m going to try for football, honestly. But if a college could take me for both baseball and football that’d be awesome.”

“Football, huh?” Jack raised his eyebrows in surprise. “That’s gonna be a tough ask. I can’t remember the last time I saw a woman playing at a top level university. Well, in Drawkland anyway. I assume you’re not looking overseas?”

“Probably not. I’m hoping that at least one school will consider relaxing the unspoken rules.” Brooklyn took a glance at her dad, who was in deep conversation with the coaching staff on the sidelines. “I am the daughter of the GOAT, after all.”

“Excuse me, I’M the GOAT,” Jack retorted. “But yeah, I’m sure pedigree will do you some good.”

“I hope so.”

“Speaking of which,” Jack gave a sly grin. “I bet my alma mater could use a QB with your skill set in a few years. You should consider them if they send you an offer.”

“Your alma mater?” Brooklyn laughed. “Didn’t you go to like, East Dickass University somewhere in Kanyo?”

“Excuse me, that’s Kiksey University! Pride of the Mixed 8 Conference!!”

“Oooh wow, I’m really impressed.”

“Don’t disrespect the Swamp Monsters! RAHH!!” Jack jokingly shoved at Brooklyn, who shoved back. Jack, unsurprisingly, barely moved from the blow.

“Oh I’m sorry. What did you do for fun in the offseason, mud diving?”

“I’ll have you know that Kiksey has a lively and exciting nightlife downtown.” Jack exhaled sharply. “Don’t worry though, I’m just joking. I’m sure you’ll have so many attractive offers you won’t even know how to whittle them down.”

“That’s what I’m afraid of,” Brooklyn admitted.

“Listen, just follow your gut.” Jack looked into Brooklyn’s eyes to show he was being serious. “That’s what I do. I went to Kiksey because I felt like they were going to let me show off my full set of talents, and I was right. Whatever you decide, don’t give up what’s best for you. And I mean you, not anybody else.” He shot a sidelong glance in Dustin’s direction.

“Thanks, Uncle Jack,” Brooklyn said, but inside she felt a prickle of stress. She really hadn’t been thinking about college offers yet, and the more she did, the more anxiety she felt.

“Just remember Beebs, you can always call me if you’re in need of some good advice.”

“That’s funny, my mom always says that’s what I should do if I want some bad advice.”

Offensively, the team is not going to do anything all that crazy. Brittany Carrington is more of a pocket passer than a scrambler, but she will take off for an occasional run. Ideally, the team will be looking for a 50/50 split with passes and rushing attempts, but in reality, about 65% of the plays will be passing plays. Naturally, game situations will determine this. Four or even five receiver sets will be employed every now and then, but with the team likely an underdog in most games, trick plays will be scarce, at best. It's a similar unit to the World Bowl 46 team, but there is significant change to the WR room as coach Cole tries to get some younger, quicker people into the mix. Second string HB Lacey Bouchard is also in her first World Bowl, and is expected to get a lot of carries, but may be worked in slowly as the World Bowl progresses.

The new starters were all part of the team last time, and will be adapt (in theory, anyway), to the greater workload.

Coaching Staff

Head Coach & General Manager: Torren Tormundsun (Age: 45) - When the call went out to reconstitute the Regulars leading up to World Bowl 47, the person who stepped forward, having maintained contact with the national team’s players and staff during the difficult hiatus, was former national team fullback and odd-jobs coach Torren Tormundsun. Tormundsun, even as a player, was a jack of many skills and prided himself on doing often thankless jobs with aplomb to clear the way for his teammates, and he's brought an adaptable, enthusiastic energy to the new team.

Offensive Coordinator: Odie Iarlsun (Age: 43) - A literally-towering figure on the sideline, long-time national team tight-end and all-around role-player Udun Jarlsun has taken over as the offensive coordinator and general offensive skills coach, given his own technical skills as both a blocker and pass-catcher. He’s proven to be a good teacher and has the kind of adaptability Tormundsun is hoping to build in this new generation of Regulars.

Defensive Coordinator: Karlus Walturs (Age: 50) - Long-time national team linebacker and defensive skills coach Kyl Walturs heads up the defensive unit. Much like Jarlsun and Tormundsun, part of what got him the job was his adaptability, lack of marriage to a specific system or front, and understanding of the whole defense.

Special Teams Coordinator: Wyatt Skode (Age: 54) - Long-time national team punter and previous special teams coordinator Wyatt Skode returns to head up the team’s special unit once again. Skode also serves as the kicking skills coach.

The Offense

Base Front: Flex-Pistol (QB at pistol depth, fullback behind, wingbacks in slot or behind tackles, ends either tight or split wide)
Overview: The Terefuxien offense is at its core meant to be adaptable and flexible based on what looks and vulnerabilities an opponent shows; it demands its quarterbacks to be competent throwers and runners, its wingbacks/tailbacks to be capable ball-handlers whether they are taking hand offs or catching passes, and decent blockers besides, and for its ends to be blockers and receivers alike. However, the foundations of the offense, the fundamentals, are rooted in the spread-option attack, making heavy use of the principles that make read-option, triple-option, and run-pass option plays so difficult to defend, to force defenses to be wrong no matter what. It's a fundamentally methodical offense, meant to opportunistically take what defenses give, whether that's in the middle, on the flanks, or to punish defenses with deep shots should they prove too enthusiastic to take away the short game.

The offense is also built on teamwork and having very little ego; every player in the unit has at least some blocking skill, and there's enough team speed and athleticism to make a defense pay for sloppy play. That said, as with the defense, there are constraints to who the team has been able to recruit; the offense probably won't have the strongest, fastest, or biggest players on the field, but as a unit they might be player-for-player as fast or strong, or more.

While the offense primarily works out of pistol formations using a variety of backs, tight ends, and wideouts, it should not surprise opponents to see the unit line up in flexbone, wishbone, or single-wing looks. Also, that old Regulars' standby, the I-formation and its many, many variants are very much still on the table. There are very few fronts this unit won't show in a given game, really, and part of their danger lies in their abilities to run the same plays out of different looks.

The quarterback in the Terefuxien offense is called on to be both thrower and ball-carrier; to that end, the team is lead by converted running back Bernie Torres, a player who is a jack-of-all-skills who can hurt defenses with his legs as readily as his arm. He has what can safely be called a "pro-caliber" arm, but not an exceptionally-strong one, and has enough quickness to punish defenses without necessarily being exceptionally fast. He is backed up by the bigger-framed, bigger-armed, but less mechanically-developed Erik Wyller. Finally, the quarterback room is rounded out (mostly) by the young Karlus Lozanu, who is faster and more athletic but is even more of an underdeveloped passer. It is also worth note that, situationally, back Theo Falkenburg (see below) may get snaps at QB, mostly in obvious rushing situations; he has a big arm, not a lot of accuracy, and elite speed.

The players who will get the lions share of the team's carries are the "dive backs", more power-oriented running backs who specialize in running between the tackles. Although they are capable of running outside the tackles as well. The most dangerous of these backs overall is Arthur Morgyn, a slashing runner who can smash through defenses up the middle but has the speed to break away from pursuit. He will likely get the most carries of any single player on the team, at least 10-15 carries per game, with heavier workloads getting as high as 20. Farren will get some carries in jumbo packages and to spell Morgyn, but doesn't have the same kind of break-away ability. Bega is a little more explosive but is still developing his vision as a ball-carrier, and will likely only really see action if injuries mandate it.

The real weapons of the offense are the halfbacks, also situationally referred to (depending on the front) as slotbacks, wingbacks, flankbacks, or flankers. These players act as combination running backs and receivers, acting as the pitch options on option plays, deep threats in the passing game, and, in Theo Falkenburg's case, potentially as a direct-snap quarterback in obvious running situations. All of the halfbacks are capable athletes, and threats with the ball in their hand that should be able to rotate relatively freely. Falkenburg is highly-unlikely to come out of the game much, and should get somewhere between 10-15 touches per game in various ways. Kaldur is a little more natural of a receiver than running back, while Serrano favors rushing over receiving somewhat. Skeller is pure speed as both rusher and receiver, while Solis is a little more of a strong runner with questionable hands. Finally, Pete Yamada is a capable jack of all, although he's still a little unrefined.

The offensive end group is led by tight-end/fullback Riktun Ellinger, who will stay on the field at most times to serve as a lead blocker and a short-yardage receiver in crunch situations; he doesn't have lots of speed but he has good hands and excellent blocking skills. On the other end is tight-end/split-end Arlo Villenueve, a receiver who can block but who mostly specializes in making contested catches and catches in traffic. He'll probably be the team's single leading receiver. Kruger is a solid all-around tight-end who's at his best as an in-line player, while Fierro and Renner tend to favor being split out wide in more obvious passing situations. Godwyn is a good blocker, and will mostly see action in jumbo and goal-line sets.

The offensive line has a great deal of depth, and most players will rotate fairly freely, or the lines will change entirely as a unit; there's no real reason to think any player will be excluded from play barring injury, and the Terefuxiens will use their depth to keep the entire unit relatively fresh over the course of the game. That said, special note should go to guards Jord Eller, Rolynd Bernhart, Sancho Merino, tackle Erik Tyrrsun, and center Danny Fierro as particularly impactful blockers, especially in the run game.

The Defense

Base Front: 5-1-5
Overview: The Terefuxien defense's base personnel package/formation is sometimes called "the hourglass defense" due to the 5-1-5 (or, more accurately, 3-2-1-2-3) configuration it has: faced with a difficulty in recruiting premium edge rushers, prototypical linebackers, and proper lock-down cornerbacks, the team makes use of a defense that uses three down linemen (roughly 4-3 defensive tackles or 3-4 defensive ends in skill and size), a pair of 'tweener' Rush Linebacker/defensive end hybrids as defensive linemen/attack-oriented linebackers, one "true" linebacker designated as the "centerfielder", a pair of box safety/linebacker hybrid Rovers, and three "defensive backs" most analogous to free safeties in other systems. What this means is that in most base packages, the team defaults to a Cover-3 shell (although Cover-1 and Cover-2 are not unusual, and in practice the defense often looks a lot like a Tampa-2 scheme), plays a lot of zone defense, and consistently brings five rushers, sometimes six on blitzes.

For writing purposes, it's safe to assume that a lot of the team's big plays on defense will involve either at least one Rover, the Centerfielder, or maybe the "Hammers" (the OLB/Defensive End hybrids), as these players have the most freedom to freelance and make plays to disrupt the offense in an aggressive manner. Philosophically, the defense is mostly a "bend-but-don't-break" unit; the expectation is that with the personnel available, just straight-up stopping most offenses cold isn't practical, but a lot of effort is made to limit or eliminate big plays, counting on good coaching (gang tackling, good coverage and rush fundamentals) to gum up the short stuff rather than scheming aggressively for negative plays.

In most situations, the defense will stick to its base personnel package unless the offensive personnel make it heinously impractical; jumbo/goal-line sets from the offense usually mean one or two DB's will be replaced with additional linemen, exceptionally receiver-heavy personnel groups will likely see a hammer and the centerfielder replaced by DB's, etc. Most of the units also rotate fairly freely, at leas between the first and second-stringers. Some units, like the defensive backs and defensive line, will also pretty readily loop in the third-stringers; there's not a wide gulf in skill level between the nominal starters and the nominally-deep reserves.

The defensive line is going to be one of the most freely-rotating units on the team; there's very little difference in skill level between the top three (Ibanus, Eriksun, Maeda) and the bottom three (Hensley, Leonburg, Andrsun), and part of the effort to keep the entire unit relatively fresh is that the players are encouraged to tag in and out amongst themselves; while there are specific situations where certain players are desired on the field at the same time (Eriksun, Hensley, and Lanning will be in together in obvious rushing situations, Maeda, Andrsun, and Bruenig are likely to be in together in situations that require more pass rush), for the most part they are relatively interchangeable. The Terefuxien defensive line is probably not the biggest or strongest, but they're not slouches and are not likely to get pushed around by just anyone without some extra effort.

The "Hammer" position in the Terefuxien defense is essentially a hybrid defensive end/outside linebacker role aimed at attacking the backfield, whether that's in the pass rush, disrupting short and horizontal passing lanes, or stuffing the run. The position is typically played by players who were too small to be "proper" defensive ends and too big to be "proper" outside linebackers, and the position is mostly built to remove as much coverage responsibility from these players as possible, allowing them to more aggressively make plays behind the line, one way or another, or to assist the defensive line. Most of the players have similar skill sets and skill levels; the main player to watch out for is Danyl Innus, who has shown a knack for finding the ball with his longer frame, whether that's strip-sacking QBs or grabbing at low throws in the flats.

The only "true" linebacker deployed by this defense in most cases is the "Centerfielder", inspired by the unique role given to former Regular Claetus U'Daanyl. The position calls for a good deal of coverage ability, as well as the speed and power needed to contribute situationally to stuffing the run or rushing the passer; on top of this, in most instances the centerfielder serves as the defensive signal-caller. Because of the high importance of the role, in most instances Faustinu Garcia will rarely leave the field. If he needs to, Henrik Thorsun will come in, and he can acquit himself well, although he's less of a game-wrecker than Garcia, but Atwood is highly unlikely to come in unless injuries force the issue. Since their job is to anchor the middle of the defense, it's going to be rare that the Centerfielder isn't around the ball on a given play.

Arguably the second-most demanding position in the Terefuxien defense, the Rovers, much like the Centerfielder, get asked to do it all, although they are not asked to be quite as strong against the run as the CF. Still, it will be rare for the Rovers to not either be in coverage, or right near the ball, as they exist as second-echelon defense against the run (to bring down the ball-carrier if the first wave of defenders fails), coverage against shorter passes, and, in blitzing situations, as situational pass-rushers. In this case, there's a bit of a skill drop-off between the top three players and the bottom three; while Nunyus, Izaaks, and Hewards will all see the field to spell the top three and assist in appropriate situations, they're easier to pick on than Deucampu (the hardest-hitting and best run-defending Rover), Fernandus (the best of the Rovers in coverage and the best form-tackler), and Falkenburg (the brother of back Theo Falkenburg, and the most instinctive playmaker, albeit the youngest and least technically-sound of the top three).

The "defensive back" position for the Terefuxien defense is most-analogous to the safety/free safety position on other teams; these players are mostly expected to play over the top coverage and generally limit deep plays from happening or causing much damage. As such, these players are almost exclusively going to be found in coverage or as last-ditch run-defenders. They will generally not come up to attack the run in its early stages, have little to no pass-rush utility, and generally will start off lined up relatively far back compared to most cornerbacks. In instances of man coverage (although relatively uncommon with this team), usually there will be at least one, possibly two DB's remaining in high cover-1 or cover-2, leaving the shorter coverage to the Rovers. With the exception of Lawrent Faramund, the DB's don't have much skill drop-off between the top-three and bottom three, although generally-speaking the amount of playing time will decrease as you go down the list. Faramund is the closest to a true do-it-all ballhawking safety, while Junsun and Estevus can, in a pinch, do a decent job of impersonating more conventional cornerbacks. Dunn is an instinctive ballhawk but kind of a crappy tackler, while Erdemsun is the reverse, a hard-hitting last-line guy whose hands may as well be bricks. Grimaldu is technically-sound and fairly quick but just doesn't quite have the awareness or frame to really box out bigger receivers.

Kicking Specialist:

Harald Alexandrus is a technician of a kicker with a somewhat lackluster leg for this level of competition; he's quite accurate out to about 45 yards, and very consistent, but his accuracy begins dropping beyond that and any kick longer than 50 yards is likely to get dicey. Darrenburg is a converted rugby player and is the avid student of special teams coordinator Wyatt Skode, which means he's very much ahead of the curve but is still learning. He's got a solid leg, but nothing exceptional. Felicitanu is kind of the opposite of Alexandrus; his placement is spotty, but he has a big leg and can knock kicks deep. If the team needs to attempt a 55+ yard field goal, Felicitanu will likely make the attempt, and he handles most kick-offs unless the team is attempting an onside or squib kick. d'Mirandes straddles the line between all three, and can acquit himself decently in any of these duties, since he's the reserve kicker, but he's highly unlikely to even dress for most games unless injuries become an issue.

Long-Snapper:

Gneiss is the longsnapper. He's reliable. The most noteworthy thing about him is wearing the number #69 and having a last name pronounced like "Nice". Otherwise, the idea is generally to not hear about him. Hult is closer to being a deep-reserve center than anything else, but he does also count as the back-up long-snapper should anything happen to Gneiss.

Return Specialist:

The Terefuxiens are not well-known for their excellent return game; the most noteworthy thing about these players is their secure hands and relative quickness that will allow them to secure kicks, get some return yardage, and get to the ground before they risk losing the ball. Any of them might see action; Heller's probably the sturdiest of the bunch, so if there's not much room to maneuver (short punts, for instance), he's more likely to be back, while Estrada and Saxton are more likely to take longer kicks.

Gunner:

It may not be the usual sport, but any time a Sarzonian national team faces off against one from Valanora, there's always a little bit of extra intrigue unless your name is Gavin Davis and the sport in question is gridball.

Thirteenth ranked Sarzonia will open World Bowl 47 with a contest in front of a sold out crowd at Joe Gibbs Stadium in Woodstock against Valanora. Davis cautioned fans and the media against pinning too much on one match, no matter the opponent.

"Sure, there's extensive history between Sarzonian teams in football, hockey and basketball," Davis said. "We don't have the same kind of history in this sport. It doesn't mean the match won't be a challenge. In fact, it will be one. It's just that we're not putting too much emphasis on one match against one opponent."

Davis noted the presence of No. 2 Chromatika and No. 7 TJUN-ia as challenges at least as formidable as the one Valanora presents, if not more.

"We don't take anyone in our group for granted," Davis said. "[Unranked teams] The Kytler Peninsulae and Tikariot are also teams to watch out for."

However, quarterback Cameron Stallworth said his team would be keying on the Valanora match.

"It's the opener," he said. "It's against a team that is a rival in several sports. We know we're gonna need to be ready."

However, weakside linebacker Artem Roshovski said the team wouldn't fall apart if they lost the opener to the Vanorians.

"It's one match out of a 14-match schedule," he said. "You always want to get off on the right foot, but this qualifying campaign is going to be a grind. It's like a regular season in our league." To wit: The Incorporated Gridball League announced the players who made the national team would receive a waiver from league play. IGL commissioner Teryn Lane said the Board of Trustees voted to allow each player to accrue a full season of service for their work on the national team.

"It's the only fair thing to do," she said. "We can't penalise players for being on the national team and we can't put our league on hold waiting for guys to get back after a 14-gaame schedule."

Davis said he and the team were "champing at the bit" to get after it.

"We're ready for kickoff," he said.

World Bowl 47 Pre-Tournament Top Ten

A fourteen game Group Stage? Ranoria not being in the competition? Only four groups? A lot of changes for this edition of the World Bowl. Yes, the World Rankings exist, but they don't really speak to the power level of these teams, do they?

Here is how we, the experts of the Chromia Central Courier, rate the top ten teams in this World Bowl before a single snap has been played.

Why Banija up top? Sure, the Iron Legion are ranked higher, but the Serpent Eagles have taken the head-to-head matchup in the last two World Bowls (kind of like the last two World Cups). With Ranoria not participating in this World Bowl, the Banijans match the Chromatiks as having one of the best rosters in the entire tournament, and with the championship pedigree of having won World Bowls in the past, there is no reason to doubt the ability of Banija to win another one. Eboue Herte will be looking to handle replacing Ice Chineze, and as long as he is able to steer the ship correctly, this team will be fine.

Chromatika may have the best Quarterback in the entire world, but the Iron Legion have had one major problem - beating Banija. Gwenderyn and company sport one of the deepest rosters in the tournament, but the biggest strength has to be that secondary. Having Lisa Bonsoon and Mastaya Vorpen as extra cornerbacks alongside Victoria Mio, Paul Mattieu, and NIkolai Dimitrov? Sure, the team will only go as far as SMBG carries them, but it's that defense that will help the Iron Legion stay in games.

Ko-oren has the stingiest defense in recent memory, and the Dragonflies will continue to beat opponents by conceding less than ten points a game. There will always be questions in regard to the Dragonflies' offense, but if you don't concede, you have a chance to win. Drawkland is a team on the rise, and their height cannot be disregarded. Group C will be a dogfight, but it's easy to think that the Grid Corps will have the situation under control.

Some may think having Saint Kanye and Quebec and Shingoryeo this high on the list is weird; however, the Surge have always proven to be a tough out in this competition, and the Quebecois shouldn't be underestimated. South Newlandia is no longer the greenhorn that it's claimed to be in this sport, while Cassadaigua will continue its inevitable climb back into the title picture, being positioned to potentially place second in Group A.

Rounding out the top ten are the Jaguars of TJUN-ia - a playoff regular, and Abanhfleft, a team who seems to be ranked exactly where they should.

This is not a slight against HUElavia or Gyatso-kai - they're just not fully established in gridiron yet and need to show that they can repeat what they've done in the most recent tournament.

THE KYTLERIAN NATIONAL GRIDIRON TEAM for the WORLD BOWL 47 CYCLE

Background
Kytlerian gridiron is a minority sport, but one with a significant following in the south, particularly in the conservative and often secessionist region of Varn. The sport's other strongholds are in the Eastern Corridor Expansion, along the border with Græntfjall; both Græntfjall-Kytler dual nationals and the previously established Icelandic-Kytlerian minority from immigration from Vircais have taken to the sport, and are most often seen in the trenches on both sides of the ball.

Owing to the small player pool and the smashmouth ethos of the sport's Varnian strongholds, the team run a triple-option offense; the -3 style modifier reflects this. In the team's internal nomenclature, "SB" refers to "slot back" or "space back," and typically there are two of them on each play flanking the QB/FB in some way, often catching screens or play-action passes while the bigger FB does pure up-the-gut work. "F" refers to "flanker," essentially TE/WR hybrids whose first job is to block and whose second job is to run vertical routes. On the defensive side of the ball, the team run a conventional two-gap 3-4, but often drop the OLBs into coverage and rush an inside linebacker or safety to create a quasi-Tampa 2 out of that 3-4.

Scouting report
To the extent the Kytlerians even have a functional offense at this level at this time, it runs through Taylor, who's capable of scoring on any play against defenses who aren't ready for his swiftness and agility. He gets help from a powerful offensive line, but one that's not been tested against top opponents and could be vulnerable to holding penalties when they are. Ilford's size and long speed makes him a quality target for jump balls downfield, though he lacks subtlety in his breaks.

Defensively, the heart of the team is the front three, who are all absolute units with scary power that don't tend to be stopped by one blocker. At least not in Kytlerian domestic play; top-class opponents may insist otherwise. Card is the Mike, and is known for his ability to pick up everything, but again he's not been tested against some of the things that top nations can provide. In general, this defense is physically a match for most teams they'll face, and the best way to beat them is to baffle them with BS.

The Kytlerians play in head-to-toe Margaret green (rgb(10,90,3) or #0A5A03) with yellow trim.

Their home field is Zube Olympic Stadium (capacity 61,093), but the games against Anthor (Game 7) and TJUN-ia (Game 9) will be moved to Qardinal Field in Borlfield (capacity 45,603) due to the use of Zube Olympic Stadium for the West Pavola Rally. Both are open-air venues with natural grass fields.

"We want that title back"- locked and loaded, Banijans start chase for third straight World Bowl title

BUSUKUMA, NATIONAL CAPITOL REGION- Banija. Chromatika. Ranoria. The big 3 nations internationally in this sport, between the World Bowl and the NSCF. Ranoria, most unfortunately, has dipped out of World Bowl competition for the long-term after winning World Bowl 46, on home soil, over the Banijans. And now, with the World Bowl seemingly as open as it has been in years with their departure, teams will descend upon South Newlandia & Ranoria for the right to be named the World Bowl 47 champions. The favorites? Probably Sarai Gwenderyn and her Iron Legion squad. Stacked at every position with RFL and GFLB players, it seems as if this would be the year they finally beat Banija and raise that trophy.

But for the Serpent Eagles, this year seems to be an interesting one. Obviously, we've been to three World Bowl Finals in a row- so we surely can count ourselves among the favorites. But look at the change at QB- Ebou Hairte. Hairte is certainly a capable QB- but it's a weird situation, no doubt. Everybody knows Kadesh Odika is going to start as soon as he graduates from Felswyr State. But he hasn't done that yet, while at the same time, the older generation, Ice Chineze, Amazu Chibuzo, and even Ezekiel Bantoba, are all retired. Who is going to be the bridge QB, the QB for one year, to pass on the baton from one all-timer(Chineze) to another who will surely be an all-timer(Odika?)

That's where Ebou Hairte steps in. But he doesn't only view himself as a bridge QB- he views himself as somebody capable of bringing Banija a world championship. "The standard by this team, across the past few cycles, has been set. I know, not everything will always go according to plan. We saw last World Bowl- we started 0-2. But we recovered, kept our confidence, started playing like we knew how to really play, and then worked our way back to the title game. The pain of not threepeating is still with us- but it's the next cycle. We put that behind us, and we use that to build confidence for this year. Everybody's 0-0. But truly, we can get back there- against Gwenderyn, or whoever, and I think we can win it once again."

Look at that schedule. Banija will open immediately with a top 10 matchup, taking on co-hosts South Newlandia at home to kick off the World Bowl campaign. "You always look forward to those big games, getting up for those big games- I don't know, I love the fact that we open at home, with a difficult opponent." Head Coach Thomas Hall told reporters. "Our fans at the national stadium are always going to get after it, and those loud, energetic, hostile environments are the ones that we thrive in. We've got to make the Ellies melt in it- it will be a great way to test ourselves, and take control of the group early. Obviously, last cycle, we started 0-2. We recovered, yes, but we know that getting off to a fast start will allow us to play with less pressure, and be best in service of our long-term goals to win this damn thing."

It's a night kick- 7:30 PM, with a fireworks show planned in the leadup. Will it be Banija kicking off the campaign with a win? Or will it be a South Newlandian road upset that up ends all expectations about this group?
