NSFB-CF: A Strong Start

Postby TJUN-ia » Sat Sep 23, 2023 3:53 pm

And so, we return to the gridiron looking for a fight. The Jaguars of TJUN-ia had done so well at an era-ending World Bowl 46 to make it all the way to the Semi-Finals...but now, that is in the past. This is now Gareth Baldwin's team and Gus McKerrin knew he had a lot of good weapons at his disposal with the former TSU QB now in the saddle. Sure, This team was indeed TSU-heavy and that was certainly a point of controversy for those who bled GCU green, but McKerrin still had confidence in his team...and he hoped that would show in this new age.

Their first match of this new campaign would be an away test against debuting Tikariot, who we were more than happy to play in a continuation of the Football rivalry from a far gone age. The Owls would end up scoring the first TD of the game, though they missed the PAT, and that...would end up being the only points they would score all night long. Balwin took over the rest of the way with 5 TDs, 2 each to Victor Que-et-Vous and Gilbert Nyamutsamba with Fremont Whitehorse getting the 5th, with Clayton McGee going 4/5 on PATs but with Baldwin sneaking home a 2PC in compensation. It wasn't wholly lights-out football, but it was a good win nonetheless...and a perfect way to come back into the fold.

1-0...but we still have a long way to go. Up next will be our first double-header and a big one at that as we host The Kytler Peninsulae in New Washington before traveling to D'rea to face #2 Chromatika. It's good to be back...but now, business is picking up. Big Time. GO JAGS!

Stadium:

Elephant Field (15.400)
The stadium is located on the outskirts of the South Newlandian capital, and is the biggest pure gridiron stadium that South Newlandia has to offer, as gridiron continues to play a relatively minor role here. The stadium is open to the elements, and Elephant Valley can get fairly windy as well – it’s not nearly as bad as Ratzupalfu, though.

Coaching staff:

Head coach: Robert Victorino (Drawkland, 66)
Victorino formerly played in the Gridiron League of Drawkland, most notably as the linebacker for the Waxton Pilots. He decided to move to coaching early in his career after an injury, including jobs as linebackers coach or defensive coordinator at various positions with colleges and pro teams in Drawkland. This will be his first head coaching gig, and he'll call the defense and make the game situation calls. He's a conservative as a coach, doesn't want to take a lot of risks, fitting the Elephants’ scheme. Also, being 66 as a Drawkian is like being in your mid fourties normally. Probably, I think. After a slow start, he actually turned the Elephants into a competitive team, somehow. It will likely remain a mystery.

Offensive play-style
The Elephants will take most of their plays from scrimmage in 3-wideout sets, following the retirement of cornerstone Dhruv Valentine from the national team. Their game-plan is focused on shielding inexperienced QB Stevens with strong players on the other skill positions; with Fantikos a solid back, van Halfensen (who is the best player on the team) at TE, and Rachelle Klein leading a promising young receiver group. The O-Line isn’t exceptionally reliable, so expect Stevens to be in trouble some times; especially with only one Tight End to help, now. Fortunately, van Halfensen is a good blocker.

Defensive play-style
The Elephants have a bend-but-don’t-break defense, focused on slowing down the attack through the air. Relatively bright spots on the fairly middling unit are ILB Edison-Downs, a rare South Newlandian with a solid college career, shutdown corner Bray, and a good pass-rushing duo in Daniels and Brandt. Stylistically, the Elephants usually play zone defense, playing with a nickel back more often than other teams, and blitzing less often than other teams.

Special teams notes
The Elephants have a very, very shaky Special Teams unit at the positions that matter (kicker, punter, long snapper), but their return game should be solid, at least.

OFFENSE: (main starters in bold)

Quarterbacks:
Image

QB1: #6 Zachary Stevens (29, Ratzupalfu graduate) (currently with the Mariana Tigers)
QB2: #5 Kilian Knight (25, Elephant Valley graduate) (currently with the Herot Paladins)
QB3: #11 Victor Köhler (29, Ratzupalfu graduate)
Zachary Stevens was being handed the keys for the big thing after Robert Stein retired. The QB who was a backup for the Egrets also has a TJUN-ian passport, but chose to play for the Elephants (mostly because the competition is a lot thinner). In his first World Bowl, he led the Ellies to a solid 6-3 record. Stevens also somehow tricked the Mariana Tigers of the RFL into playing him. As a player, he’s not really great at any one thing, being a below-average arm with below-average legs, but he mostly gets the job done well enough.

Running Backs:
RB1: #2 Thomas Fantikos (25, Ratzupalfu graduate) (currently with the Mariana Tigers)
RB2: #26 Joshua Maier (28)
RB3: #13 Martha Huber (24)
FB1: #83 Shawn Harvey-Chandler (29, Elephant Valley graduate)
Thomas Fantikos is the only dude on this list that I trust further than I can throw them. The elusive back was part of the Egrets rushing attack, but while he was the thunder to the lighting of Zamandi Ayana there, he’ll have to shoulder most of the load alone now. That seems pretty difficult, so the Elephants are unlikely to have a threatening rush in the cards on every single snap. Fantikos also plays with Stevens on the Mariana Tigers, so at least he has plenty of practise getting handed the ball by his QB.

Tight Ends:
TE1: #86 Dustin van Halfensen (25, Richardson graduate) (currently with the Berlin Snow Bears)
TE2: #85 Daniel Pascual (26)
TE3: #89 Hasan Eastwood Jr. (24)
The Tight End spot might be the best part of the Elephants’ roster. In his college career, Dustin van Halfensen accumulated more than 1500 yards and 14 touchdowns on about 150 receptions with a program as famed as Richardson, proving he’s the real deal. The team will miss Dhruv Valentine, though, one of the last players from the original Elephants World Bowl roster. There, he played with the father of Hasan Eastwood Jr., but much like his dad at the time, Junior isn’t expected to see the field much. This is very much the position of DvH, unless the Snow Bear goes down.

Wide Receivers:
WR1: #14 Rachelle Klein (33, Elephant Valley graduate) (currently with the Berlin Snow Bears)
WR2: #82 Marcel Schlachter (23, Loyola-Istria graduate)
WR3: #87 Victoire Wilkinson (23, Elephant Valley graduate)
WR4: #18 Adam Parker (27, Elephant Valley graduate) (currently with the Mariana Tigers)
WR5: #28 Dominik Pleasants (25, Ratzupalfu graduate)
WR6: #22 Brian Pascual (26)
Rachelle Klein is the answer to the trivia question “Who was the first South Newlandian to record a touchdown in NSCF?”, thanks to a thirteen-yard TD reception in week 10 of NSCF24. It was her only college TD. Anyhow, she’s turned into a good player and a decent WR1, and is now on the Snow Bears. The other two starters are both fresh out of college, with Schlachter having done major work for the Blue Thunder, and Wilkinson having down much more minor work in Elephant Valley. Parker is also a major contributor for this team, but Wilkison is the better slot fit. You can expect Mariana Tiger to see the field a lot, though; he can play, too. This might be the best wide receiver room the Ellies have ever fielded.

Offensive Line:
LT1: #79 Lonnie Moran (27, Elephant Valley graduate) (currently with the Mariana Tigers)
LG1: #62 Dan Tucker (29, Elephant Valley graduate)
C1: #66 Shawn Doss (31, Ratzupalfu graduate)
RG1: #69 Lewis Whitfield (31, Ratzupalfu graduate)
RT1: #77 Silas Robles (31, Elephant Valley graduate)
C2: #60 Dion Young (29, Elephant Valley graduate)
LG2: #64 Alessio Adams (29, Ratzupalfu graduate)
RG2: #63 Ricky Carr (27, Elephant Valley graduate)
LT2: #58 John Trammell (27, Ratzupalfu graduate)
RT2: #75 Benjamin Sommer (27, Elephant Valley graduate)
The Ellies are actually bringing this entire group back, in full. This means they’ll have good chemistry, but a lack of actual good players here will mean that opposing rushers have a chance to feast. The standout player here is blindside tackle Moran, who is working on carving out a modest career with the Mariana Tigers.

DEFENSE: (main starters in bold)

Defensive Line:
LE1: #99 Artavis Hunt (29, Ratzupalfu graduate)
NT1: #95 Kyle Dorn (31, Ratzupalfu graduate)
RE1: #96 German Newton (33, Elephant Valley graduate)
NT2: #97 Dominick Ford (25, Elephant Valley graduate) (currently with the Berlin Snow Bears)
NT3: #76 Christopher Shaw (23, Elephant Valley graduate)
LE2: #90 Raymond Lewis (27, Elephant Valley graduate)
RE2: #93 Dylan Armstead (27, Ratzupalfu graduate)
This group is also almost entirely coming back from the last one, but that doesn’t make this a good group. Both of the Ends are fairly limited in their upside, but there’s something at Nose Tackle. Dorn and Ford will probably split most of the snaps, with the younger Ford now a Snow Bear; but the coaching staff still trusts the veteran more.

Linebackers:
LOLB1: #98 Violet Daniels (29, Elephant Valley graduate)
LOLB2: #57 Noah Kemp (27, Elephant Valley graduate)
ROLB: #92 Keyaan Brandt (29, Ratzupalfu graduate) (currently with the Berlin Snow Bears)
ROLB2: #34 Cameron Gutierrez (31, Ratzupalfu graduate)
Daniels and Brandt remain a strength for this team, supplementing a fairly middling Defensive Line. Both of them are right in their prime now, and are key contributors for this team.

ILB1: #48 Russ Edison-Downs (31, Ratzupalfu graduate)
ILB2: #4 Daniel Wagner (29, Ratzupalfu graduate)
ILB3: #40 Andrew Bailey (25, Elephant Valley graduate)
ILB4: #47 Theresa Hofmann (30)
Edison-Downs is the only reliable player here. Russ was a great Linebacker for the Egrets, really anchoring a good defense in his senior season. A sure-handed tackler, he stands out as the best player on this group, although Wagner is also mostly fine.

Cornerbacks:
CB1: #43 Carolyn Bray (33, Elephant Valley graduate) (currently with the Berlin Snow Bears)
CB2: #23 Alani Sörens (23, Felswyr State graduate)
CB3: #39 Valentin Pruitt (31, Elephant Valley graduate) (currently with the Mariana Tigers)
CB4: #24 Benning Grayson (31, Ratzupalfu graduate)
CB5: #33 Zachary Walker (23, Elephant Valley graduate)
Carolyn Bray actually turned out to be really good with the Snow Bears, somehow. Opposite of her will be Alani Sörens, who played well for the big-time program of Felswyr State, with Pruitt a very serviceable backup. One thing this team distinctly lacks is a decent slot corner, so let’s hope that doesn’t become an issue.

Safeties:
SS1: #17 Grayson Murray (31, Ratzupalfu graduate)
SS2: #46 Imaad May (25, Elephant Valley graduate)
FS1: #49 Conrad House (27, Elephant Valley graduate)
FS2: #16 Federica Valentini (23, Ratzupalfu graduate)
Safety might be the biggest weakness for the Elephants, with none of these players being any good.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

Kicker:
K: #12 Divyansh Carrasco (26) (currently with the Berlin Snow Bears)
Won the job via a tryout after the last Elephants’ kicker retired. Was expected to be no good, but actually was, and proceed to catch on with the Snow Bears.

Punter:
P: #91 Alicia Woodbrough (23, Northern Moravica graduate)
Uh oh! Woodbrough was infamous for the Cougars, and certainly not for being good. She’s still the best option available, though, so expect the Ellies to go for it on fourth down slightly more often than usual. Has been banned from being within 30 feet of any field goal holds.

Reserve Kicker/Punter:
K/P: #8 Henry Thakor (32)

Long snapper:
TE2: #85 Daniel Pascual (26)

Holder:
QB3: #11 Victor Köhler (29)

Returner:
CB5: #33 Zachary Walker (23)
Showed some flashes in tryouts, but probably is nothing special here. May be replaced by one of the other fast players on the roster.

If you have any questions or something, please let me know either via TG or on discord.

Suspend my players: TG.

+5 style modifier.

With Cardenao lacking any sort of professional football league, players, or anything of the sort, the Ministry of Sport has decided to send the most experienced footballers the nation can boast: the LeBois Santura University Broncos.

Yes, the collegiate side will be shedding the Blue and Orange that has led them to an 8-4 record so far in the 29th iteration of NSCF competition. While the level of competition in the World Bowl will be unfathomably higher, it falls on the shoulders of students to represent their nation in their first ever international football competition. Nothing like some extracurricular activity!

ELEVATION: 5,420
LOCATION: Upper Dome district, Sea Dome City
Already qualifying for NSCF by procedural wankery over the more skilled Autonomous University Wildcats, the Stingrays were desperate to cut the advantage held by division and crossdome rivals High City College by constructing a workable but likely terrifying high-tech stadium lofted to an elevation elsewhere in the Dome. With access to all Matrian territories and regions, and several nations' worth of creative and well-trained civil engineers and architects, it was still a challenge to recreate the conditions at Peak Field. The engineers couldn't find a way to make something that high support thousands of fans without serious risk of injury and damage. However, they were able to work with Upper Dome Massive's Designer Stadium Company- they claim- to safely hold several thousand drunken youths by gameday at a height of 5,420 ft. The Lemon Sharks quickly declared their own unilateral deal with the Stadium. Still, I wouldn't jump up and down more than strictly necessary.

Brooklyn Beck (S1:E3)

Postby Drawkland » Sat Sep 23, 2023 9:15 pm

"The First Letter"

It had been a few months since that World Bowl camp, and as the summer progressed, the stress of thinking about picking a school slowly evaporated from Brooklyn’s mind. After all, she had more important matters to deal with. The Territorial high school baseball tournament was the number one priority, and Brooklyn intended to play her ass off to make North Craggold the champions.

Unfortunately, that would not be on the cards. The double-elim format ended up being the saving grace for Brooklyn’s high school, as they dropped the first game in a crushing 8-6 loss on day one. Over the rest of the week, North Craggold battled, thanks in part to a solid pitching start by Brooklyn in the second game and buoyed by her hitting prowess from end to end. The Wolves clawed their way through the loser’s bracket into the final … only to lose to the champion Northeast Metropolon High in their first matchup.

Either way, it was a great time for Brooklyn, thanks to her excellent personal performance. Baseball is a game of failure after all, and Brooklyn knew that as well as anybody. Besides, there was always next year.

The one free month Brooklyn had in the summer, she enjoyed to the fullest. She hung out with her teammates, went to the pool, watched the Grid Corps kick ass in person, got some driving practice, and even found time to stay in shape. Then the humidity and heat began to crank up a little more, and the relaxation was starting to come to a close. Football season was right around the corner.

Hell Week was not supposed to be enjoyable for anyone, besides the particularly sadistic among high school football coaches. Even so, Brooklyn was taking the gauntlet in stride. It was easier because she had security, at least. She had a stellar junior year and had such an undeniable skillset that none of her peers could hope to touch the starting QB job, at least in the early going. Football camp for her was more about getting back into playing shape than having to prove anything.

On the last day of the second week, Brooklyn was eating lunch with some of her teammates, seniors Mark Holmes, Julian Gallagher, and Kevin Briggs. All three of them were skill position players, specifically running back and wide receivers respectively. They were the same age as Brooklyn and all four had come up through JV and into varsity at the same time. Like the rest of the football roster besides Brooklyn, they were all male. Initially this was a challenge for Brooklyn, but after four years she’d grown used to the dynamic.

“So, B, how many college offers you got right now?” Mark asked with a mouth full of sandwich. Whether by negligence or intentional vulgarity (it was hard to tell sometimes), he had waited until after he’d taken a bite to ask the question.

“None yet,” Brooklyn answered shortly, grabbing a handful of pretzels.

“Bullshit, dude.” Kevin countered. “I’ve seen articles online about how schools have been sending you shit since seventh grade. You probably have a suitcase full of damn letters by now.”

“No, for real!” Brooklyn insisted. “My dad threw away all the shit we got back then. He said that those coaches are all desperate schmucks and that there was no reason to take those offers seriously. He might’ve been on to something, pretty sure half those coaches have been fired since then so it’s not like I’d be able to take up those offers anyway.”

“That’s insane to me. Absolutely insane.” Julian shook his head, then took a sip of water. “Seriously, if I actually get a scholarship offer from a top 64 team I’m accepting that on the spot. No hesitation.”

“For real!” Mark agreed. “Imagine if Sadeg State had sent you something, that’s the jackpot right there, and your dad would just shred it anyway?”

“Oh trust me, if State sent me an offer, it’d be framed on the wall right now,” Brooklyn laughed. “I dunno, he just said that it would be too much of a distraction. Plus it’s a really major decision, there’s no reason to have to stress over it until it’s actually necessary.”

“Wish I could be having to make a decision like that,” Kevin chuckled. “‘Let’s see, do I want to be the fucking boss here, or there? Hold on, let me see which one has the best weather.’”

“Better yet, which one has the hotter women?” Mark interjected loudly. “Gotta consider ALL the peripheral factors.”

“Not sure that’s going to be affecting my decision at all,” Brooklyn rolled her eyes.

“Hey, maybe it should!” Kevin cracked into a devious grin. “You’ll need to know what your competition is in that department. Knowing you …” He narrowed his eyes in mock study, rubbing his chin as he considered Brooklyn’s visage. “Yeah, you might want to commit to Cavsar if you want any action. That’s the only place you’d be at the top of the food chain.”

Brooklyn responded with a phrase that I will not repeat here.

“Alright fellas, that’s enough,” Julian coughed, trying to hold in a laugh. “Really B, say that you got the perfect offer from every school on your list. Which one do you pick?”

“I dunno …” Brooklyn leaned back and ruminated on the question.

“Come on, if you don’t say State, I’m gonna beat your ass.” Mark growled.

“Sadeg State would be great, I can’t lie.” Brooklyn curled her lip. “It’s just … y’know my dad went there, and he has such big shoes to fill. I’m already worried that I’m just gonna be compared to him my whole career, and going to State would just make that worse. Plus, State’s got a real traditional program, I’m not even sure if they’d offer me a football scholarship, on account of this,” she motioned vaguely at her body.

“Boooo,” Mark replied, but that’s all he had in response.

“That’s fair,” Julian said. “People already call you Beck Junior all the time, I guess it would suck to literally be the second Beck to play for that school.”

“Exactly. I mean I’m still considering State, because I’ve been a fan my whole life anyway.” Brooklyn tried to keep herself from smiling. “That being said, the prospect of playing in the NSCF is very attractive. I dunno, maybe going to Cavsar wouldn’t be such a bad idea …”

Brooklyn immediately lunged out of the way from Mark and Kevin, who attempted to attack her for even joking at such a terrible decision. Julian shot up, and the rest of lunch devolved into a four-way game of pickle.

That evening, Dustin Beck was waiting to pick up Brooklyn and take her home from practice. When she got in the car, she had something very different from college offers on her mind.

“Hey Daaad?” Brooklyn asked in the voice she used to butter her father up.

“What’s up BB?” Dustin replied warily, recognizing the tone in her voice.

“Do you think that I could drive myself to camp next week?”

“Hmmm … I suppose that could be possible.”

“C’mon, I have my full license now, and I got plenty of practice this summer. I know the route from home to school by heart. Plus,” Brooklyn added, “it gives you the excuse to drive your nice car around if you need to go anywhere, since I assume I would use your SUV.”

“You have a great point there,” Dustin admitted. “Alright, I’ll talk to your mom about it. I’m sure it’ll be fine.”

“Thank you Dad!” Brooklyn said cheerfully. She wanted to get a little more freedom her senior year, and hoped that driving by herself to camp would instill the confidence in her parents to allow her to drive to more places on her own or with friends once the school year started.

“Oh yeah, there’s something waiting for you once we get home,” Dustin spoke up after a couple minutes of listening to the radio.

“Something?” Brooklyn echoed curiously.

“Yeah, I think you’ll like it,” Dustin said, being intentionally vague and enjoying every second of it.

“What is it?” Brooklyn asked, shifting in her seat to look closely at her dad’s face.

“You’ll just have to wait and see!” Dustin insisted. “We’re almost home anyway.”

“Booooo!”

Minutes later, Dustin pulled into the garage of the Beck household. As he turned off the car, he locked the passenger side door to delay Brooklyn as she tried to quickly exit.

“Hey!” she cried in protest, and Dustin cackled in laughter as she fiddled with the door to open it.

Dustin walked into the house as if nothing was amiss, Brooklyn trailing close behind him once she got out of the car. He walked at a painstaking pace, pausing a couple times to check his watch, yawn, stretch his arms, all while Brooklyn impatiently followed by his side.

“Oh, quit messing with her!” Elie exclaimed, watching the proceedings from her seat at the dining room table and holding back a giggle. She pointed across the table. “Look.”

Brooklyn looked forward and her eyebrows raised. Lying at the end of the table was a large, thick envelope in a bright shade of red. She dashed forward and inspected the envelope. On one side was the address information, the other was embossed with a large and fancy “R.”

“Is this-?” Brooklyn started to ask, but she didn’t bother finishing the question. She carefully unstuck the fold, and pulled out the contents. There were several pieces, a large R sticker in the same style as the envelope imprint, a return envelope, and other pieces of paper merchandise. The main item was a sheet of thick paper, printed with dark ink that glinted red in the light. The words “UNIVERSITY of RAIKENNAX” dominated the header with bold lettering.

Dear Brooklyn, the letter read.

Our athletic department considers you to be one of the greatest athletes in our great nation of Drawkland. Your unique talents and skills make you a truly one-of-a-kind player, one that demands more than the average treatment. This letter is to inform you that we at the University of Raikennax are prepared to offer you a full-ride scholarship to compete for both our basketball and baseball teams, whichever you find your passion in.

The city of Raikennax loves the Beck family. Your father’s work for the Stallions in the GLD was nothing short of excellent, and we were sad to see you all leave our beautiful town. We believe that you, Brooklyn, can forge a new legacy here, one that will shine bright in years to come. If you commit to being a Red Knight, you will find a loving and supportive community for all of your collegiate career.

We also understand your dedication to your craft on the gridiron, not just on the diamond or the hardcourt. Our football staff is hard at work communicating with our athletic department on how to accommodate you, if you wish to compete in football after graduating high school. This is your destiny, and we want to ensure that you have the final say in what you play. Just remember that your spot on either our basketball or baseball rosters is guaranteed, should you choose to accept this offer in a timely manner.

The letter went on to explain the history of Raikennax’s sporting achievements in baseball and basketball, along with various mechanics for accepting the offer and expectations of student athletes at the university.

We are eager to hear from you regarding your decision on our offer, the letter concluded. We hope that by this time next year, you’re preparing to move into your future as a Red Knight forever!

Sincerely,
ANDREW REED, Head Basketball Coach
JASON CARTER, Head Baseball Coach

“Wow …” Brooklyn breathed. As she said before, there had been pseudo-offers sent in the past, but this felt like the first one. It felt real.

“What does it say?” Elie asked. She was still sitting at the other end of the table, content to watch the expression of wonder on her daughter’s face. Dustin, meanwhile, had been peeking over Brooklyn’s shoulder to read along with her.

“It’s a scholarship offer, for both baseball and basketball,” Brooklyn answered. “It looks like they’re saying I can pick which one I want to play.”

“It’s a high honor,” Dustin confirmed. “Plenty of high schoolers are five-point athletes, but they usually only get scholarship offers for their best sport exclusively. Some smaller universities may offer scholarships for the other sports. I’m sure those will come flooding in over the next few weeks.”

“Wait a minute, isn’t there a restriction for when they can send these?” Brooklyn asked.

“Yes. Today was the first day you’re eligible to receive offers.” Dustin explained. “Most schools probably have their letters stuck in the mail, I bet most of them arrive this weekend. Raikennax though,” he chuckled, “they sent somebody to drop off the letter in-person today, around lunchtime. I think they wanted to make sure they were first.”

“That was a fun conversation,” Elie said sarcastically. “‘Who are you? Why are you on my porch?’”

“Hmmm, very interesting,” Brooklyn broke into a sly smile. “Sadeg State didn’t bother sending anybody, and they’re just across town. Raikennax is a couple hundred miles and they didn’t have any trouble sending-”

“Hey!” Dustin interrupted, raising a finger authoritatively. “There will be no State slander in my household!”

“She’s got a point,” Elie chuckled. “I’m interested to see how this pans out. We should probably get some sorting boxes ready now for the flood of letters we’re sure to receive.”

“That’s not a bad idea,” Dustin agreed. “Speaking of which, BB, what do you think of this one? Does it seem like a good second option?”

“Second option?”

“Behind State, of course.”

“I don’t know about all that,” Brooklyn replied, a little timidly. “I think I’ll want to see everything that comes in before I make any hard calls. This does look attractive, though. They even said that they’re considering letting me on the football team too, if I’m interested. And you know I’m interested.”

“So you really want to try playing football in college then?” Elie asked, looking closely at her daughter’s face, as if she was discerning whether Brooklyn was being serious or just appeasing somebody else.

“Yeah, seriously.” Brooklyn nodded. “I know it’ll probably cut down the number of offers to consider, but like this letter says,” she pointed at the Raikennax offer, “this is my destiny. And I don’t want to compromise it because some old guys in an office say that I can’t be on their football team.”

“That’s my girl,” Dustin grinned proudly. “Now let’s find some sorting boxes. Oh, and we can grab the shredder for anything we get with a return address in Cavsar!”

Late FG Dooms Fillies,
by Caitlyn Dufrense, Concord Heights Times

Stacie Houston sat in section 103, with husband Jeremiah Brooke and their son Jericho, choosing to be in one of the upper rows of that section instead of being in a luxury suite. "We're always in one of those suites when we go to a sporting event", the NSSCRA 7 Champion stated, "I love the hospitality in them, but there's also something a little nice about mingling with the fans more. This was pretty cool." Most of those rows near the most popular NSSCRA couple were filled with members of their families, friends, or pit crew members, but still there was time to sign autographs for fans, which they would do at halftime before having an additional session after the game. It was inevitable that Houston would want to be here for the game against Saint Kanye, since that is where her husband is from and obviously who both of them drive for. "Cassadaigua is home, but Saint Kanye is near and dear to my heart as well. I spend a lot of time there, as you know, and I have learned so much about the country. When I saw that this was an opening matchday game for the World Bowl, I got excited and so did Jeremiah." Of course, so too, was little Jericho. When asked who he wanted to win, Jericho responded, "I don't want mom to ground me, but the Surge!!" Stacie laughed with that response, as obviously there would be no punishment for that. Jericho has spent most of his time in Saint Kanye, so it is understandable that he would pick that. The two would see quite a contest, with Saint Kanye's James Rasputin connecting on a 45-yard field goal to win the game with four seconds remaining. Jeremiah replied, "Last lap pass for the win, baby!" Jericho interestingly pointed out, "45 yards, 27 plus 18." Both parents could only grin wide as their son was a math wiz on the spot, referencing their car numbers.

For Team Cassadaigua, this was a well played game in defeat. Holding Saint Kanye to four field goals and one touchdown is not too shabby, but it was better than the Fillies did on the day. QB Brittany Carrington lamented, "You will look back at things, for sure. When you're in one of these games that could have gone either way, the loss can sting a little more even though you played well." Head coach Jennifer Cole added, "If we played like this against most teams in the group stage, we'll make the knockouts."

Postby Sarzonia » Sun Sep 24, 2023 6:58 am

It hasn't been too often that Sarzonian national gridball team manager Gavin Davis has sent in a backup quarterback into a match because it was well in hand.

Perhaps it's because he was a former quarterback himself, but he decided that a quarterback carousel would be of no benefit to Sarzonia, their players, or the organisation as a whole.

However, Sarzonia were already leading Valanora by four possessions after a turnover on downs gave the Stars the ball back with 1:19 remaining in Sarzonia's 39-13 victory in front of a sold out crowd at Joe Gibbs Stadium in Woodstock. He decided to send on backup quarterback Mike Barnett to give starter Cameron Stallworth a chance to hear a warm ovation from the crowd.

"Cam had a great game," Davis said. Stallworth completed 19-of-24 passes for 218 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran eight times for 47 yards and another score. One of the few problems the team had was a botched extra point by kicker Matt Vargas. It led to Davis calling for back-to-back two-point conversions after their last two scores.

The scores turned a 27-13 lead into the final margin, so Davis could look at them as a mere footnote in an otherwise convincing win. However, Davis said he would talk with special teams coordinator Dylan Massey before deciding whether to move on from Vargas.

"I want to give Vargas a chance," Davis said. He's usually been reliable for us. If there's something wrong mechanically, we can make adjustments. If he's hurt, we can bring in another kicker."

Meanwhile, running back Ty'Relle Clinton rushed for 136 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries. He added four receptions for 34 yards, including a nine-yard screen pass from Stallworth on third down and eight at the Sarzonia 33-yard line at the 7:31 mark of the second quarter.

"Valanora were showing a blitz from their weak side, so I figured we could get some space if we got a screen pass to Clinton," Stallworth said. He said the original play call was a deep curl route to wide receiver Steve Swain.

The conversion appeared to deflate the Sabres, who were trailing 14-13 after scoring the last 13 points on two Fredrik Mundal field goals and a touchdown pass from quarterback Håkon Schau to tight end Lukas Midtbø. Sarzonia quarterbacks coach Noah Hendry said he thought Valanora were expecting to grab momentum with a third down stop and a drive to score points before the half. Instead, Stallworth hit Swain on a 19-yard touchdown pass that gave Sarzonia a 21-13 lead.

"There's a big difference between being up six or seven points and being down eight," Hendry said. "We held onto the ball for another three minutes of game time and it gave our defence a chance to rest."

Sarzonia currently sit second in Group B as No. 7 TJUN-ia crushed unranked Tikariot 36-6 in their opening match. Fellow unranked side The Kytler Peninsulae shocked everyone by defeated No. 2 ranked and top overall seeds in this World Bowl Chromatika by a 7-6 scoreline. That result only served to remind Davis that the 14-match group stage is a grind.

"This isn't a sprint," he said. "We want to establish good habits and not get too high after a win or too low after a loss."

Sarzonia's next match will be away to Lisander, then they'll face a tough Andor side back at Joe Gibbs Stadium.

"We've got a long grind ahead of us," Clinton said. "It's important for us to get off on the right foot and see where the rest of qualifying takes us."

Dragonflies offence fires on all cylinders, defence unpolished

The Greenblues have started the World Bowl 47 campaign with a win, as expected, and ran up the point differential to +30 in the process through a very efficient Masman offence. The defence couldn't feast as much as planned as the new pieces are still to be fitted in, allowing A Place Somewhere to find some gaps and ways to move the ball for a total of 13 points. Masman led the team on all drives except one to put up 36 points, and Ingdon put up the final seven for 43 total points.

It's a breath of fresh air to see the Ko-orenites move the ball so freely and resolutely through the air, Masman given the weapons that had been marinating in the youth system for so long, but the staff finally deemed them ready. It no longer falls entirely on Gasbeek, Welsh, and Costigan and if any of those three are sitting out a play, it's easy for the defence to limit what remains. Instead, we saw plenty of passing plays with two or three open receivers, Marineau slicing through zones and Costigan amassing yards after the catch, and we got our first look of Ouimet's spectacular explosiveness, but Masman didn't dare to throw the ball to him very often at all. The tight ends were relegated to jobs on the line, with Zyutara and Schemering excelling in pass blocking and being very useful outlets on blitzes, but Shanigunten showed us a glimpse of what the offence could look like further down the tournament with three catches on four targets, two going for first downs and the third reception prevented a sack and gave us a few yards.

Hardman scripted the first quarter to get vital info on his brand new receiving corps, substituting them in and out, trying out various packages, and Masman kept to his reads and methodically got the ball down the field to get touchdowns on each of our drives in the quarter. After that, the offence played it by ear a bit more leading to an ill-advised throw and an interception on the first drive of the second quarter - but seeing as the score was already 14-3 at that point, few doubted our chances of winning. Things did get hairy when Readhallow got the ball punched out on a carry on the subsequent drive in Place Somewhere's red zone, but the opponents couldn't do anything beyond the two field goals.

Where the second quarter was about as bad as it got, the third quarter was efficient as Ingdon throw for 77 yards on that single drive, pushing the ball out to five different targets on six completions to quickly run up the score to 21-6. The defence also awoke - not that allowing three measly points in a half counts as doing nothing - but they got the ball back via an interception on a deep throw to Aurisea and from that moment, every Ko-orenite drive would end in points.

Jauffret's defence took some experimenting, but in the second half he got significant mileage out of the Fajardo-Hanalaunden combination, the Place Somewhere O-line had to shift protection in their direction nearly every play which made them vulnerable for any blitzing linebacker coming from the other way. Fajardo ended with 1.5 sacks, Hanalaunden with 1, yTaddwadd stunted through a badly called protection for 1, and Hirate and Darknoll picked up the remaining 1.5 on linebacker blitzes. Only one sack happened in the first half, but the second was full of drive-killing moments - a tackle for loss here, a quarterback hit there, aside from the 4 sacks. The ball was knocked out a few times but the Place Somewhere's backs fell on it both times. The Dragonflies' secondary went nearly untested as the Place's gameplan probably had their quarterback not target anyone too deep, and played a near-perfect game in the third and fourth quarter as well. A Place Somewhere still picked up two field goals in the fourth quarter, and they got some chunk plays on empty formations, highlighting the difference in experience and quality of the 'newer' units; the extra defensive backs, the additional linebackers, and the blitzers.

Masman didn't do anything too exotic late in the game and calmly drove his team to a touchdown and three late field goals, one as time expired, for a pretty un-Ko-orenite 43 points on the board. If we can have more of this, and Hardman can get even more out of his endless combinations of receivers, we could be in for a grand Bowl.

Lots of lessons learned and most of all, it was a very entertaining game.

Top 23 under 23

With national teamers given no club duties, fourteen players under 23 are under contract with Batterink. They're certainly the most exciting and most promising at their position, but that leaves plenty of others at their clubs.

1/2 Longtin and Ouimet, WR
Ouimet has his Dragonflies call-up, but Longtin, a couple years his senior, remains at the Aminey Caspians as one of their protected players. Ouimet's speed - you can't teach that, they say - is better but Longtin has proven to possess resilience and an uncanny ability to stay upright after tackles.

3 Toredaindin, RB
The Mayara Destroyers have their guy, and it's Imes Toredaindin. It feels like it's a matter of time before he's on the NT given how old the group behind the QB is, but until then he has time to improve himself at one of the best clubs at growing offensive skill position players. There's certainly enough to improve, but his start has been great.

4/5 Lence and Dejarnette, LB
Another group on the NT who are aging quite a bit, and Dejarnette already is on the NT for that reason. Lence, intelligent and fantastic in coverage, feels like a great complementary piece who can aid us in our already stacked secondary.

6/7 Slotmoerbei and Imajuku, DB
Slotmoerbei is the next Aurisea - even though Aurisea himself is just 26 - but the free safety is already one of the best left in the League. Imajuku is on the NT as one of the various extra DBs, though. Slotmoerbei is maybe a bit too unspecified in his skills for Jauffret's liking, but the Sterrenwolde Dragonflies (NOT the NT) love those kinds of players.

8/9 Yagura and Andrade, DL
The NT's defensive line has been improved a lot and then had a unit of blitzers added to it. In this generation of great D-linemen, some are left on clubs instead: Yagura's name has been making the rounds but is once again passed up by Jauffret, and keeps playing for the Noordrug Astronauts as a blazing fast yet light guy while Andrade is a quite old-fashioned huge individual taking up multiple running lanes.

10/11 Gaunlondhen and Sesoraten, OT
O-linemen tend to take a few more years to ripen, but these two, both originating from the Capital cities, are already vital members - at left tackle! - at their clubs. Gaunlondhen has looked like he has a decade of experience instead of 2 years with the Mayara Wolves and Sesoraten has been fantastic, if a little uncertain in some passing plays, for the Schemerdrecht 65ers.

12/13 Stratham and Tsujimura, QB
A matter of time before the QBs are mentioned. Ko-oren likes its older QBs and believes them to throw fewer Ints. Stratham, at 21, has taken over at the Eaglebury Emperors as the kind of risk-taker they want, and Tsujimura is at the Schemerdrecht 65ers behind an equally young O-line as a scrambler - he really needs that skillset. The 65ers are clearly going for future - is everyone going to stay healthy until the reaping can begin?

14/15 Hassegana and Adrien, DL/LB
Primarily on their rosters to provide immediate pressure on QBs, Hassegana has earned his NT callup, and Adrien is at the Schemerdrecht Admirals where they can't decide to line him up on the line or behind it, in the middle or outside, and his coaches' indecision isn't doing him all that well so far. Let's hope they find out where his strengths lie.

16/17 Denett and Belsea, WR
A class behind Longtin and Ouimet, we expect Denett and Belsea to have long, fruitful careers even if it never ends up with a NT appearance. Denett is currently the main target at the Willowbourne Saints playing both hard and fast, and Belsea's incredible acceleration helps him with YAC or deep catches - if only he could read zones a little better, he'd be perfect.

18/19 Manwald and Aonadi, DL
Also a class behind Yagura and Andrade, this duo, at the Willowbourne Saints and Aerellen Explosions, respectively, are also cursed with being just behind a great generation. Manwald is a little closer to greatness, both because of the team he's on and through finding his way onto a stat sheet in pretty much every way - fumbles, even batting down passes, against run and pass - and Aonadi is a tad more limited but has found success against the pass.

20-23 Anethanthen, Foxburton, Billbury, Shareragnau, defence
A weird grouping of players who are a step behind the rest but still deserve mention. Anethanthen (Mayara Wolves) contributes weekly in the secondary, not as the single shutdown corner they probably would have preferred but still an all-over-the-field threat. Foxburton is on the national team in the blitzing DL/LB role, but hasn't found a lot of immediate success there yet. Billbury (Eaglebury Emperors) is on a pretty weak defence but when he's left to do his job (and not others') he's been fine against the run from the line. Shareragnau is a brutal linebacker on the Aminey Caspians who just likes to hit people - good thing that's his job and he's wreaking havoc any unfortunate tight end or running back trying to block him.

ST. KANYE SURGE - GROUP STAGE PREVIEW & UNIFORM SCHEDULE

The 47th edition of the World Bowl is a special one for the St. Kanye Surge, as it will be their tenth appearance in the world's premier gridiron competition. Despite seeing themselves tumble a few positions in the world rankings, R.J. Linetti, James Rasputin and the rest of the boys in purple and lime are still determined to grab their very first trophy, having gotten as close as a runner-up finish in World Bowl 41 against the juggernauts of Ranoria.... who for some reason will not be making an appearance in the tournament that they are co-hosts of. Does this make the Surge's path easier, even by just a little? Of course not. They have been placed in a tough Group A with seven other teams - an assortment of old rivals, new faces and everything in between. Let's meet them now, shall we?

CASSADAIGUA
What Yeezie nowadays doesn't know about the Dagans? The female-dominated land has a very rich sporting history, from basketball to soccer and of course stock car racing, with their star driver Stacie Houston of course being married to St. Kanye's ace wheelman Jeremiah Brooke. But since this is a gridiron tournament, let's switch our focus to Cassadaigua's gridiron squad, the Fillies - they won three Bowls, the latest back in the 40th edition; are ranked 15th in the world (four spots below the Surge); and play co-ed, both female and male players finding places in the starting lineup. Both the games in Concord Heights and Kardashia are sure to be exciting affairs, so be sure not to miss them.

GYATSO-KAI
You might know these guys from Quidditch, or perhaps hockey, but St. Kanye's fellow Atlantian Oceanians also field a great gridiron team, ranked eighth in the world at that. No information about the players have been made available at the time of this writing, but given their rank, expect a pair of tough outings for the Yeezies,

CARDENAO
Cardenao did not let a lack of a professional league or players in their country stop them from taking a shot at World Bowl glory, instead choosing to field their best collegiate players from LeBois Santura University as their national team. Quite a gamble, sure, but with an all out offensive philosophy that's built on speed, they just might make things happen.

KO-OREN
And now for the complete opposite, the team that pride themselves on shutting down opponents and winning by as ugly scorelines as possible, the Surge's rivals, none other than the third-ranked Ko-oren Dragonflies. Some of the players who gave the Yeezies a troublesome time whenever they faced each other several editions ago, remained in the lineup. However, there are also a lot of new faces, so it's gonna be a whole new set of preparations for our home and away series ahead. One thing's for sure though - penetrating the wall that the Dragonflies call their defense, that shall be the key.

ROUYOUTE
Not to be confused with Rouyoutte, which is the city where Josh Laney-Seymour and the rest of the Aurora Knights play. Ranked 23rd in the world, they were swept by the Surge in World Bowl 46 with a combined score of 108-11, but it would do well to not be overly confident, and expect them to come back stronger in this edition.

A PLACE SOMEWHERE and SAINT-JEAN-JACQUES et BURNHAM-ON-STOVE
Every tournament has its enigmatic newcomers, and for WB47, these two squads with rather long names are the two that the Surge will be facing. Like Rouyoute, they should not be underestimated - every game in the group stages is crucial, seeing as only the top four of eight teams (among four groups) will advance to the playoffs.

The Surge's tenth World Bowl appearance was a perfect time for them to unveil their new uniform set. They kept the old standard of purple at home and white on the road, but added an alternate set featuring a very dark, almost black shade of purple. This new set will be making its debut against the rival Dragonflies on Matchday 5, at Surge Field, and will appear again (with purple pants however) against SJJeBOS on Matchday 11.

HUElavia 49–20 Drawkland
Estadio Capital, Curumba, HUElavia

Opening Night Glories

HUElavia obliterates Drawkland in front of a rabid HUElavian crowd to set the tone in the World Bowl!

Domination. That was the word that perfectly described the match by HUElavia over Drawkland, who was seen as the direct opponent for 1st Place in Group C. Playing at Estadio Capital (90,000) in Curumba, HUElavia opted to wear their Alternative 4 as a homage to a team in another universe that HUElavia had received images of before through a satellite years ago. With the crowd in a sea of Yellow, Blue and White, it was a deafening venue that seemed to intimidate some of the Drawkians. This seemed to genuinely play into the game throughout the four quarters.

The opening score came in the first 90 seconds of play, as Vilca did a bootleg run to send a deep ball across the field to al-Zaman, who was left all alone and ran to the endzone for a Touchdown, with the crowd jumping and cheering loudly to make the stadium rumble from the celebrations. Drawkland would eventually equalize with a QB sneak by Proudfoot into the endzone after a lengthy drive. In the ensuing kickoff, de la Cruz got the ball 3 yards into the endzone and began to run and give cuts before he was all alone and ended up going into the endzone for the Touchdown. Once more the crowd celebrated with cheers and jumping around, while Coach Schneiderman was with a big grin for the play.

The second quarter saw HUElavia continue with their pressure on Drawkland, forcing quick three-and-outs quite some times. About a third into the second quarter, HUElavia marched to the 32 yard line, where Vilca ran to give the ball to Uche, who rumbled his way into the endzone for a Touchdown, sending the crowd to great joy for the score. Late in the quarter, in the 28 yardline, Vilca ran back and found an open Obasie on the slant to give way for an easy run into the endzone for another Touchdown, and the crowd was cheering and jumping at what was looking like a blowout. Moments later, Drawkland quickly marched down the field, and Merit kicked a 44 yard field goal to make it 28-10 at the half.

The third quarter was another quarter where the HUElavian defense stayed strong, including two interceptions of Proudfoot by the likes of Tasis and Oogami. Halfway into the quarter, HUElavia marched down the field to the 15 yard line, where Guimarães was given the ball by Vilca where he juked past Hackett and Delgado into the endzone for the Touchdown, now just about confirming that this was going to be a decisive victory. Late in the quarter, Drawkland tried to march down the field, but the HUElavian defense stood firm and prevented any further march to the endzone. Merit kicked a 48 yard field goal that was good through the uprights. Right before the end of the quarter, Vilca had the ball where he dropped back and sent a deep ball downfield where it was caught by De Matteo, where he ran to the endzone for a 63-yard Touchdown.

Into the 4th quarter, HUElavia continued with their defensive stops and continued to force punts out of Drawkland. With halfway of the quarter past, HUElavia marched to the redzone to attempt to run out the clock before they were at the 1 yard line with 2nd and goal being given. Vilca pushed for a QB sneak which ended up being successful as he fell into the endzone for the Touchdown, with the crowd cheering and applauding for the great score. Drawkland would eventually push to the endzone one last time, now with HUElavia playing the backups, where in the final seconds of the game, Banks rushed for a 9-yard touchdown, to effectively end the game, 49-20.

In what should have been a much more closely contested match, HUElavia dominated the game and were showing they meant business in the World Bowl. After having such a great tournament in the previous edition, only to fall short to Banija in the Quarter-Finals, HUElavia was picking up where they left off four years ago. Sea Dome and Ardsk are the next two opponents for HUElavia, with both being unranked, to where HUElavia is expected to pick up victories once again and take a commanding lead in the Group Stage from the get-go. Here's to hoping the team continues their good run.

Missy LeCrown: "Bobby Dials, once again it's a pleasure having you on Cardenao Sports Network. First off, you're now playing for your country, representing Cardenao in the 47th World Bowl. How does it feel to trade the blue and orange of LeBois Santura University for the blue and gold of Cardenao, and do you find this level of competition to be a step up from what you've experienced in college football?"

Bobby Dials: "Thank you, Missy. Wow it’s surreal to be here, what an honor to represent Cardenao on the international stage. Yeah it’s a bit of a change from college football to this level, no doubt, but it’s been an incredible experience after one game. The competition here is way more intense, everyone is so crisp and strong in every play, it’s definitely a step up; these teams are among the best in the world and to play against them? I’m loving it, it’s a chance to prove my worth at the highest level of play."

Missy LeCrown: "Alright now let's talk about that incredible upset win against Gyatso-kai. Cardenao’s first ever international gridiron match and you captained them to victory in a showing of remarkable strength, particularly in the running game with Anthony DeWitt's outstanding performance on the ground. Can you walk us through those 60 minutes from your perspective, and how did you manage to overcome the challenges presented by Gyatso-kai's defense?"

Bobby Dials: "I’d love to Missy, Gyatso-kai was a tough opponent and they came prepared. Early on in the first quarter it was clear they were trying to shut down my passing game. Every snap I had heat coming at me and my options were covered, so it was obvious we had to adapt our game plan. So instead of looking to make the bigger plays that define my career, I focused more on making precise throws when the opportunities arose and feeding DeWitt the rock. My man had a great game on the ground, totally changed the game for us. I think I saw he ran for 203 yards, which is just crazy. That touchdown too was nice, the way he supermanned into the endzone for our first ever touchdown? Shit I’m not forgetting that anytime soon. Shoutout to the offensive line for being some big boys and buying us time to get the ball forward. Our defense was stellar, too, Alabaster Red with his four sacks and Ricky Spanish with a critical interception in the late game. Teamwork does make the dreamwork, at least against Gyatso-kai I suppose."

Missy LeCrown: "A great show of teamwork indeed. Looking ahead, Cardenao faces Saint Kanye, a powerhouse in basketball and known to be a formidable opponent in gridiron too. What are your thoughts on this upcoming challenge, and how do you prepare mentally and physically to take on such a tough competitor?”

Bobby Dials: "Look Saint Kanye is a challenge, a tough match for anyone, but we just had a challenge and we handled ourselves pretty good. I know the level of play is far different and Saint Kanye is a little underranked in my opinion, but we’re cautiously optimistic. Definitely not expecting a victory but after a win against the eighth best team in the world, you gotta feel at least a little good."

Missy LeCrown: "Finally, after Saint Kanye, Cardenao matches up against Saint-Jean-Jacques et Burnham-on-Stove. How do you keep your focus and motivation when transitioning from facing tough opponents like Gyatso-kai and Saint Kanye to what some might perceive as a more manageable matchup?"

Bobby Dials: "Look there’s no such thing as a manageable matchup, I think the game we just won proved that. Nobody expected us to win and here we are, 16-12 in one hand, 1-0 in the other. Every game in the World Bowl is where we will die proving ourselves, regardless of the opponent. We’ve got no issues maintaining motivation, believe me on that. We have goals, we have dreams as a team, and it’s about working together to make those our reality. We're heading into each game with the same intensity and dedication, all set to maximum, focusing on our game plan and executing it to the best of our abilities. We don't underestimate any opponent because we know what we’re capable of and right now? Nobody believes in us, so you better believe we'll give our all in every matchup."

Missy LeCrown: "Well, Bobby, thank you for your insights, and best of luck to you and Cardenao in the upcoming games. We'll be cheering for you back home!"

Bobby Dials: "Thank you, Missy. We appreciate the support, and we’re gonna leave it all out there on the field for you at home."

In the Nationstates Stock Car Racing Association, the term "Yeezie magic" refers to the tendency of a driver, born or based in St. Kanye, to wait until the last possible moment to overtake the leader/s and steal the win for themselves. However, in their opening match of World Bowl 47, the St. Kanye Surge national gridiron team proved that even though they don't drive advertisements around in circles, they are also capable of some Yeezie magic of their own, winning 19-17 on the road thanks to a last second field goal. Their opponents? The Fillies of Cassadaigua, who also participate in NSSCRA* and thus are no strangers to this phenomenon.

Despite getting the better of an exciting finish, however, Surge head coach Jeff Delphine isn't entirely happy with his team's execution. "Yes, the special teams did well, providing the bulk of our scoring at that," he said in the post-game press conference. "The defense was good too, the Fillies are known for scoring thirty or forty points on a good day, so limiting them to just seventeen was big. However, a rough outing for our offense, like we showed today, is something we can't afford to have more of in this competition." And rough it was indeed. Quarterback R.J. Linetti was limited to 147 yards passing, 15/27 completions, one touchdown to Deshawn Fredericks, and two interceptions (for an ugly passer rating of just 52.55). St. Kanye weren't any better on the ground, being held to 94 yards, 59 of those from new starting running back Gregory Silk.

James Rasputin, on the other hand, had what must be the best 35th birthday a kicker could have. He nailed each of his four field goal attempts on the day, including the game-winning 45-yarder, as well as an extra point. "I was just performing my duty though, doing what was expected of me," he spoke, humbly downplaying his role as the Surge's hero. "I see my teammates having a hard time, what else could I do but step up?"

1Q STK field goal Rasputin 43 STK 3-0
The Dagans had first possession, but their drive didn't go as well as the home crowd expected. Brittany Carrington lost the ball on a strip sack by Simon Carver; it was recovered by the offense, but the visitors' defense held tight and forced them into a three and out. Well, the Yeezie offense got similarly stuffed, but they were at least able to march into field goal range and record the game's first three points.

1Q CDG Ellis 65 pass from Carrington (Lewis kick) CDG 7-3
The slim lead was also a short-lived one, however, as the Fillies were able to get on the scoreboard on their succeeding drive. Carrington made up for her mistake earlier by connecting with secondary receiver Katelynn Ellis for 65 yards and a TD.

1Q STK field goal Rasputin 34 CDG 7-6
An exchange of punts from both teams, after which the Surge had the chance to take the lead. However, they were once again limited to a field goal and thus could only cut their deficit to one.

2Q CDG field goal Lewis 25 CDG 10-6
Cassadaigua responded with a field goal of their own at the start of the second quarter, a chip shot from #3 Jenna L. That is, Jenna Lewis. Not Logan. That's an NSSCRA driver. Get it right.

2Q STK Fredericks 17 pass from Linetti (Rasputin kick) STK 13-10
St. Kanye took the lead at halftime, however, thanks to an excellent two-minute drill led by Linetti that ended in a one-handed catch in the end zone by Fredericks.

3Q STK field goal Rasputin 51 STK 16-10
Rasputin banged in a long FG for his third of the day, giving the Surge their biggest lead of the game at six. Well, it could have been nine or even ten, but Linetti's throw on third and long sailed over Fredericks' head and fell incomplete.

4Q CDG Breslin 6 run (Lewis kick) CDG 17-16
The Fillies took up a large chunk of the fourth quarter with a drive that lasted for eight minutes and change, ending with a run in the red zone from fullback Danielle Breslin. However, that still left 1:16 on the clock, more than enough time for the Surge to mount a comeback....

4Q STK field goal Rasputin 45 STK 19-17
.... which they did in style. Dagan Airways Stadium in Concord Heights seemed to be packed in equal parts with home supporters in pink and black, and visiting fans in purple and lime, and it was the latter group who cheered loudly when Rasputin's fourth field goal of the day with 0:04 remaining found its way between the uprights.

Among the crowd was none other than the Houston-Brooke power couple, together with their child and NSSCRA 30 champion Jericho. "That was quite the finish, and the fact that it ended in the Yeezies' favor made that even sweeter," Jeremiah Brooke said to reporters. I'm happy, Little J is kinda tired at the end but definitely happy, Stacie won't admit it but she's happy too, maybe not for the result but definitely because of the atmosphere in this place. We're definitely gonna be watching more of the Fillies' home games during the first half of the group stages, then looking forward to an equally enthusiastic and energetic crowd once we follow the Surge in St. Kanye after the break."

Up next for the Yeezies is their home opener, against higher ranked Gyatso-kai, before traveling to Cardenao to take on their young but fast and offensive-minded roster. As for the Dagans, they travel to Ko-oren before returning home to take on Rouyoute.

Special World Bowl XXXXVII Coverage

National team starts strong against Torisakia
Terefuxien side makes 32-8 statement against #18 squad

After years of anonymous teams playing under the Regulars' aegis, the Terefuxien team, now only carrying that nickname by custom and led by a former Regular in Torren Tormundsun, returned to competition in earnest by going against a peer squad in the 18th-ranked Torisakian team, and turning in a rock-solid, more-or-less mistake-free 24-point win to open competition and give themselves some good momentum to begin a long (14 game!) group stage at World Bowl 47.

The team's new-look spread-option offense took a little time to get going, but eventually, along with the new-look defense, eventually took over once some early kinks were worked out. The Torisakians won the opening coin toss and started strong by driving down the field before a false start stalled the drive and the Terefuxiens were able to force a punt. However, the Terefuxien offense didn't initially get much better results; their own answering drive stalled just past midfield, and it took a facemasking penalty on what looked like a failed fourth-and-one conversion to get the team into range for a 48-yard field goal from Harald Alexandrus.

The teams would trade punts on the ensuing drives, and a good return set the Torisakians up at their own 38 to start their third drive. Although there was a close 4th-and-one conversion needed to extend the drive on the first set of downs, the Torisakians managed to take advantage of some soft coverage and miscommunications to move the ball into the Terefuxien red zone, before notching a 7-yard touchdown run off a jet sweep. The Torisakian coaches stayed aggressive, calling for a two-point conversion attempt, which succeeded on a quick slant to get Torisakia an 8-3 lead early in the second.

Another exchange of punts got the Terefuxiens the ball back with about six minutes to go in the first half, and the team ran and threw the ball effectively to get down to the red zone, where QB Bernie Torres found an open TE Arlo Villenueve for a 4-yard TD throw with 8 seconds left on the clock. The ensuing snap was errant, and Theo Falkenburg, acting as the holder, ran to scoop it up and, seeing an opening, scampered into the endzone for the two-point conversion, to give the team an 11-8 lead going into the half.

The offense got the ball to start the second half, and promptly geared-down into a mostly-running drive that ate nearly nine minutes of clock before Torres pitched to Falkenburg on a triple-option. Falkenburg cut inside and ran three yards for a touchdown. Alexandrus' PAT extended the team's lead to 18-8. It seemed like the Torisakians might be able to cut the deficit on the ensuing drive, but the promising drive ended when DB Laurent Faramund jumped in front of a wobbly throw into the endzone and took the ball away. With the touchback, the Regulars salted away the rest of the quarter and, early in the fourth, widened the lead decisively when FB Arthur Morgyn followed TE Riktun Ellinger on a 5-yard dive into the endzone, followed by Alexandrus' PAT to make the score 25-8.

Torres' offense stalled and failed to capitalize on a fumble by the Torisakian running back, but after the defense forced another punt out of the opponents, a methodical, running-oriented attack managed to put the game away when Torres kept a read-option to scamper 2 yards into the endzone.

The win puts the Regulars in good position going into their next two games: the first will be against 43rd-ranked Bongo Johnson (who made a statement of their own by downing #10 Abahnfleft, 20-19), an old hand that some might remember from the Terefuxien national team's championship-winning heyday (now two decades in the rearview mirror, sadly), followed by a match against the United Fruit Company, a new face at the World Bowl who won their first game over the befuddlingly-named Peru 2022 RP.

"It's a good start, but it's just that, a start. We'll know where we stand once we're able to start chaining wins together. We'll get that chance soon, hopefully," Tormundsun said after the game. "You can't look past anyone, and we know what Bongo Johnson is capable of better than most.

Notable Terefuxien National Team Stats:
- QB#22 Bernie Torres - 15/25, 162 pass yds, pass TD; 8 car., 43 rush yds, rush TD
- FB#26 Arthur Morgyn - 21 car., 86 rush yds, rush TD; 2 rec., 18 rec. yds
- HB#07 Theo Falkenburg - 8 car., 43 rush yds, TD, 2pt conv.; 4 rec., 29 rec. yds

LOCATION: Iron Hill Zone, CC1
ELEVATION: 7,415 ft/2.26km
Not to be outdone by Red Sea Dome City, Corporate City 1's high-rise 'field' is actually a rooftop basketball court resizable for volleyball, boxlax, and other sports- including all football codes- requiring surfaces to be trucked all the way up the frightening Legion Highway or delivered by helicopter or by dropper (reconfigured pamphlet bomber). It is extremely popular due to its opposite weather conditions under the Supermassive Sea Dome giving an inherent advantage over MSD. But unlike the free-for-all down below, Peak Field only allows High City College, the CC1 Legion (senior national team), international guests, and domestic members of 4 pro clubs hand-selected after proving they deserve to live más: the Iron Hill GFC Ancients, the Dozens, the Bazaar Eagles and the Infosec-Pro Operators. You can wear, say, or do almost anything nonviolating here because people are unusually focused on not dying. Also, it's hard to find anything in CC1 that is both profitable and illegal except one corporation overthrowing the Corporate Council, which would be unprecedented.

HEAD COACH: Gendrate the Extemporator (52M) High City College Snipers (NSCF, SPGL 2)
a Sea People translatable surname, NOT an English nickname. "the Extemporator" should be translated every time he is discussed in another language, even if the result is awkward or confusing.Gendrate has been head coach for 6 years, and got his translatable surname for his talent in communicating intricate and complex systems to young players. He has indicated he intends to start using young players as starters in the near future but not this year, as the labor surfeit continues.

Gendrate is not known for domestic success, going 7-6-1 in 4DGCC1, but is considered the most tested and known quality in the international game due to a string of near-upsets in a tough NSCF conference, the Big 8. However, the rest of the Snipers staff has not been invited, on the theory that Gendrate is the best choice to unify coordinators and players from more domestically successful teams. As with all Sea People teams, each player is expected to play multiple positions and sports casually. Players are trained in trick plays but otherwise, Gendrate does not actually expect to use a player out of position, so secondary positions are not listed in order to avoid confusion. OOC: Yes, this means you can pick which player is used in which trick play. Go nuts!

Due to the Snipers' lack of actual meaningful wins, not to mention the labor surfeit, HCC players are not considered a hot commodity for the WB yet.

OC: Dr. Heidi Acula (50F) City of Industry GFC City Freaks (4DGCC1 Champions, SPGL 1)
Offense: I, shotgun, some run option, regular but very light use of trick plays (OOC, think Schottenheimer Chargers). Heavy use of RBs, WRs and QBs in the run game. Stretches of West Coast, a couple long bombs, and a lot of play action to keep defenses as on-edge as possible when playing the Legion.

At home, playcalling initially tries to encourage the fear of falling off the sides of Peak Field, a useful edge at home in NSCF, by pretending to share the same fears. However, all teams using Legion Tower are entitled to regular inspection of the grounds and engineering department, and are fully confident in the safety measures. Due to the advanced tech levels here, these measures are less visible, presenting a real psychological hurdle to unfamiliar teams. Only especially drunken fans are actually at elevated risk. So, Dr. A will quickly revert to the "true" offense.

DC: Tkaronto Jeff (54M) Archipelago Destroyers Image (SPGL 1)
Defense: 4-3, moderate use of the rush, lots of nickel and dime, very little pure Prevent, but a lot of trickery and bluffing on the line. Aggressive CBs punish any visiting teams afraid to use the sidelines on Peak Field.

Although Corporate engineers and sporting folks are totally confident in the safety measures at Peak Field, the psychological impact of the apparently minimal effort to save lives is a real defensive edge that the team exploits.

The Social Seasons of Shin-goryeo

PART 14 - Last Night of the QBC Proms - Myeong-Shin

Three months would pass since the Heo Myeong-Shin and Myeong-Yoon would talk to their father, the Privy Councilor and Royal Archives chair Dr. Heo Dong-Soo, about the possible measures to be taken to remanoeuvre around the sports ownership issue the two were respectively facing. Over the rest of the summer, the Heo family's main branch, that being those of the Professor's direct line via his two children with late Maureen Turner, had kept themselves busy.

Myeong-Yoon, the daughter of the family, had responded quickly to his father's call to resolve the situation as soon as possible. Speaking directly to the RQFA General Congress later that month, not as Ji's close relative or spouse of the Montesierra, but as a self-made Olympic gold medalist in women's basketball (not many held that distinction, after all), Heo tried her best to appeal to those of the general congress that her, Rico, and Club President Einar Salihamidzic prided themselves upon running a self-sufficient club driven by its youth academy and conscientious management, and had no reason to work closely with her cousin Gyeong-Wan. This argument, further compounded by the strong group of barristers and bullet-proof paperwork presented by Ji and his wife Maisie (Dreyfus-Millikens, after all, were of early Industrial Age moguls), seemed to have appealed enough to approve the retention of current ownership structure on that end.

The same did not exactly happen in the case of Myeong-Shin and Ian. For Lautner, 'Good Morning Quebec with Ian Lautner' had taken up every space of his head, while for Myeong-Shin, it was over his actual career which he valued dearly over those he delegated towards the Goldbloom-Heo Foundation run in his and his wife's name. Bugil College still had two more high school tournaments left to play in Bongwhanggi (Golden Dragon) and Hwanggeumsajagi (Golden Lion) championships, and having placed into the semifinals of the Hwangjebae (Her Majesty's Classic) back in late-February, Heo knew that this could be a good year to aim for a championship.

Fortunately, this did happen. They had fallen short in Bongwhanggi, where they would lose in the quarterfinals to a west coast prep school in Prince Eric College, but the combination of strong performance last year and the semifinals appearance at the Hwangjebae had meant that they would be invited back to Joongyeong for the third shot at the national championship. Feeling more at ease, and led by two complete games from starter Jean-Moseh Turpin, Bugil would win their next four games out of four to come ahead with their fourth Golden Lion, a first in 43 years since their 2018 victory.

For Heo, the final strikeout in balmy Joongyeong afternoon was a relief. He had won this competition before, exactly twenty-five years ago in 2061 as a sophomore, and had pitched two final pitches in the two finals. One went straight into Asher Lundrigan's catcher gloves for his 14th strikeout, other was hit by Theo-Alexandre Pinson for 'The Home Run', so he knew how difficult it was to win this specific title out of the quintet. Feeling satisfied with the outcome, and somewhat buzzed with the rumours that college programs and even QBO sides were looking to secure his services, Myeong-Shin went into the summer knowing that he had to take time off.

Unlike Myeong-Yoon, whose year-round schedule had meant she would be busy checking out the transfer window and working with the scouting team of her ventures, Myeong-Shin stayed mostly out of spotlight. He spent most of his times back in Kingston, looking after his two teenage kids Seung-Geon and Seung-Yeon, watched a few Tigers games, and ran clinics whenever possible. Heo, being one of few national icons in baseball (though plenty of football fans knew him as the legendary Hector Kweon-winning linebacker), did the very least he could do in the public, but otherwise stayed away.

This did not exactly mean that he would be able to fully stay away from participating in some of the great institutions that the country afforded to those at home and abroad. When the autumn term arrived at the hilly domains of Bugil College, Myeong-Shin had relatively little to do. He was still the preparatory school's employee, but baseball season was not to begin until after Winter Break in early-January, and his additional duties as an assistant housemaster had come with relative little tasks thanks to his senior, a 78-year old Cedric Lewis-Moh, had done impeccable job in keeping the dormitories well-regimented. Coach Heo, in exchange of delicacies he would offer in favour whenever he would go to Joongyeong, would use the opportunity to travel and visit the capitol, usually visiting his father and grandfather whenever possible but also to attend certain cultural functions.

This time, it was the Last day of the QBO Promenades. It was a particularly warm autumn day in Joongyeong with the sky full of red and yellow. Sitted on their box of the Grand Tier, on the other side of the Royal Box that Christine II would normally seat herself in, Heo Myeong-Shin and Ian Lautner were anything but following along the lighter, joyful classical pieces, especially those of patriotic fervour mixed with antics that the public would normally associate the highly-regardednight for. The covers afforded by the private box had no doubt meant that they would be left alone, for most part, though both Myeong-Shin and Ian's wives and children were busy tending to themselves that it was not exactly a quiet company.

'So, what is on your mind?' Ian asked. Seated with a grey suit and ties, and his brown hair well-glazed, Lautner looked more like a media personality than Hall of Fame quarterback used to escaping the limbs of the edge rushers. It was clear that after a decade, Ian had found himself in a comfortable state of his self in this city, the Eternal City of Lights that often intimidate the people with its history oozing through its lamps, raised roofs and boulevards, a surprising transformation still to this day considering his Montevician origins. 'Fearing your father?'

'Not really,' Myeong-Shin answered. 'If I had feared him then I would be the one running H&N, not the other way. But you know why my father doesn't want that, and would rather see me and Naomi doing what we pride ourselves for - coaching.'

'He trusts you,' Ian answered with a slightly higher pitch of voice. His husky voice, that of slightly higher pitch than his father, very much reminded those around them of their father, who was doing fine but had spells of hospital visits from time to time. He then switched topic and went forward to ask Myeong-Shin: 'As you might have suspected by now, I am serious with this idea...to sell the (Northanryun) Rovers. There are a few options, as you would suspect from the home of popular entertainment and money-laundering centre, but I think I'm on a good spot to drive things up.'

'That's good, probably makes things easier for us the rest of the way,' Myeong-Shin commented. 'You know too well that the Praetorian purchase isn't just because of my grandfather. It also involves yours too.'

'Absolutely,' Ian nodded, exactly knowing what he had meant. The Lautners, after all, held long ties to the Songak's pop art and music scene - his parents both came from Songak, with his mum Ada Silverberg, working at the Athlone Museum (yes, the one famous for its Gala) before moving to Montevicio for their jobs. 'It's in some ways paying tribute to my folks too.'

'But the bigger challenge would be to find an investment that's at very least comparable,' Myeong-Shin answered, trying his best to think about possible suggestions. 'Like though it's under H&N, we all know that's your money, and you aren't exactly going to spend it on something extravagant. Odette would go no on that, and you know she's going to be right.' This was true - his wife Odette Bolouque, who played basketball at Saguenay and then at the QWBL, was a frugal person. 'But if you aren't going to spend it on that round-shaped ball, what are you going to spend?'

'The Fighting Irish?'

'Once again, slightly awkward for either of us to invest it back to Saguenay. And you aren't going to just give money to USM after once scoring 70 on the Trojans aren't you?' They laughed as Myeong-Shin raised this, remembering that he also did an Education masters dgree at Queen's College, and Ian's mum Ada often worked with their art history department. 'Maybe we should think big.'

'QFL expansion franchise?'

Myeong-Shin quickly shook his head. 'Forget about that, Ian. You have your own show to run and that gets into a dodgy territory, especially since you are running a national television show with the QBC,' Myeong-Shin answered. 'That's exactly why we are having this talk, and why the Competition Office is still putting our proposal on hold until the goddamned Rovers sale is over and done with, and also why I can't just propose that we go bid on the Kingston Tigers.' He then closed his eyes, before apologising. 'Sorry about that - you know, we really shouldn't be dealing with this in middle of the Last Night of Proms-'

'No, no, it's fine,' said Ian. 'It's my fault.' He then resumed: 'So if we think big, maybe we'll have to go abroad and bid for a team abroad. You know that's not a bad idea, and I think a good number of bidders could be interested.'

'I'm all ears,' Myeong-Shin said.

'Why not an RFL franchise?' Ian raised. 'Fiston Redwolves and the Pittsburgh Ironmen I hear are out on the market.'

Makang Secka, third play of the game, 3rd & 9 for South Newlandia

The crowd was magnificent- man, were they LOUD. First game of the World Bowl season, top 10 matchup, headed to the national stadium- it was always going to be one hell of an environment, and the Banijan fans absolutely had brought it. Makang Secka didn't think he had heard a pop for the NT that loud, probably ever. The opening kickoff had been returned to the SNL 33 yard line. Thomas Fantikos had a pretty good gain on the opening play, a shifty six yard run to set up a second and four for the Elephants- a team that had beaten Banija in recent years. But 2nd & 4, SNL tried to be aggressive and go for a play-action pass but Titus Ayange had ended up in the backfield for a sack.

3rd down and 9- the crowd was really getting into it. "Hey man!" He had to scream to be heard- reminded him of the crazy college environments he had been a part of when he was a NSCF player in Ranoria. "Your QB ain't shit- get ready to get your ass off the field and punt." He was talking shit to Rachelle Klein- whether the 33 year old could even hear him, he had no idea. Zachary Stevens was in the silent count, and the ball was snapped. The Banijans were going all in on the QB- seven man blitz, make the South Newlandian find his hot. Stevens stepped off his back foot and threw it, kinda floating out of his hand.

"Ohhhh sheeeet." Makang Secka made a break on the ball, stepped in front of Klein, and picked it off! "WOOOOOO LET'S GO!!!" He yelled as he started to run it back up the sideline. Nobody was gonna catch him- 3rd play of the day, the stadium was nearly shaking as his pick six just lifted the lid off the place. He was way too amped up- he ran to the goal posts and dunked on it like they were a basketball hoop. "COME ON BABY!"

Koman Tabor came up and the two chest bumped. "LET'S GO MAKANG!" They ran up to the crowd and high-fived a few people in the front row. Nothing like a pick six on the opening drive of a game, especially a top 10 matchup, to really get a fanbase rocking.

World Bowl Brief- Banija opens World Bowl 47 with 33 point shellacking of the Elephants in top 10 matchup at the Stadium of the Restoration

BUSUKUMA, NATIONAL CAPITOL REGION- "No Ice- No Problem!" Ebou Hairte declared during his first victory as the Serpent Eagles starting QB at World Bowl 47. Not a shot at Ice Chineze at all, nor should it have been interpreted as one- but with Ebou Hairte a publicly declared bridge QB at age 33, with a guy who's still in college basically already guaranteed to take this job next cycle, he's got to show the world that he's his own man. Which, fair play. Ice Chineze racked up numbers like crazy, and won like crazy, so there was significant worry in many corners that the team would slow down without ice.

But, not today.

Makang Secka taking an interception back 45 yards to the house for the Stadium of the Restoration to reach the loudest decibel level recorded in Serpent Eagles history- a crowd pop at 134.4 decibels. Insane. "The crowd support we have in this country- man, it's always been excellent, but today was at another level." Thomas Hall told reporters. There are many reasons why, of course. Many people curious to see Banija after a QB switch. Think, since our return to the World Bowl at World Bowl 34, we've only had two starters- Isaka Jawara, and then Ice Chineze. There's excitement and curiousity over a new guy. Plus, after losing the final to a bitter archrival- there's will among the Banijan gridiron fans to get back.

You can't get back to the FInal after one group stage game of course! But you can state your intentions. And state your intentions, this team did. The team was dominant basically from beginning to end. We already went over that pick six. Their first offensive drive, they had a 3 and a half minute drive, sparked by a 37 yard pitch & catch from Hairte to Kalu Alazar, that ended in a 4 yard touchdown run for Zamandi Ayana, our star HB. So think- not even halfway through the first quarter, at home, we were up 14-0. The defense would step up again- a CB blitz on a 3rd and long for South Newlandia at their own 2 yard line, and Koman Tabor got home for the sack, and the safety.

A fantastic start for Banija- two TDs, and a safety. Defense responsible for scoring 9 points. Up 16-0 early on the #9 NT in all of international gridiron. Simply put, South Newlandia were put on their back foot early, and they just never had a chance of coming back. They had a solid drive early in the second quarter, with Thomas Fantikos having a 16 yard TD run to make the score 16-7. However, the Banijans simply kept taking yards on the offesnive side of the football. Ebou Hairte would lead some quality drives in the second quarter, throwing red zone TD passes to Banija's top two WRs, with Gabriel Yafet and Kalu Alazar both opening their scoring accounts today.

It was a game that we led 30-7 at halftime. We were dominant in all categories. Up 2-0 in the turnover battle- both turnovers forced on the plus side of the 50. We had 14 points off of turnovers. Had 235 yards of total offense in the first half alone, with South Newlandia limited to just 78 yards of total offense. Not a ton changed in the second half- South Newlandia simply did not have the firepower to try coming back, down 23, in this environment, against this team. They did score a 3rd quarter TD- but we responded with a trio of field goals, and another TD of our own, in the second half to win by a final score of 46-13.

"A win like this, against an opponent of this caliber, is a fantastic win for us." Said the head coach, Thomas Hall. "It's great to see dudes performing at a high level against an opponent that will likely win at least one knockout game this tournament- if not more. But, as we know. World Bowls are not won or lost in one day. Just because we had this big win, doesn't promise anything for us in our next game."

Banija's next two games will both be against opponents who lost their openers. Peru 2022 RP lost by 10 to the United Fruit Company on MD1, and we travel there on MD2. "Obviously, they are unranked- there's no film on these guys. Or, at least, very little." Thomas Hall told reporters. "They definitely offer a unique challenge from that perspective." And then, 18th ranked Torisakia will come to Jinja City to face the Serpent Eagles. "Obviously, they got rocked in Week 1 at home- so we expect the to come out pissed off and focused in Week 3." Hall told reporters. "That game will surely be a challenge as well."

Game played at the Stadium of the Restoration, to a capacity crowd of 91,835

First Quarter
14:03 SNL INT/BNJ TD- SNL QB Zachary Stevens pass is INTERCEPTED by BNJ CB Makang Secka, returned 45 yards for a TOUCHDOWN. PAT is good (7-0 Banija)

A Sarzonian national gridball team offence that seemed to score at will at home against Valanora bogged down in their first away match against Lisander.

Sarzonia misfired on two third down passes whilst attempting to equalise in the first half, only to trail by six heading into the halftime dressing room. However, Sarzonia clawed back en route to an 18-6 victory.

Manager Gavin Davis said after the match that kicker Matt Vargas would be placed on injured reserve with a high ankle sprain. Vargas suffered the injury during a botched extra point on the equalising touchdown, a 43-yard pass from Cameron Stallworth to Matt Largent at the 6:42 mark of the third quarter.

"It looked bad," Davis said. "He couldn't put weight on it." Team sources feared he could be out for 8-10 weeks at minimum. The team has announced they would sign kicker Matt Andersen for the rest of the group stage.

Running back Ty'Relle Clinton added 118 yards on 20 carries and scored both touchdowns. The Stars failed on two two-point conversions.

As disjointed as the offence was against 43rd ranked Lisander, the Stars clicked on all cylinders against No. 16 Anthor, rolling to a 48-14 win that left Sarzonia with a 35 points per match scoring average as opposed to allowing 33 points, a scant 11-point average over three matches. Andersen booted five extra points and field goals of 32 and 38 yards in his first match spelling the injured Matt Vargas.

Sarzonia will face unranked Tikariot at home for their next match.

Postby Chromatika » Sun Sep 24, 2023 9:53 pm

As Misha Florentine took to the interviewing booth following the 26-36 defeat to TJUN-ia at the Henza Center, the new boss of the Chromatika Iron Legion looked rather subdued. Nobody had thought that Chromatika would be in this spot after three matches - 1-2 and having dropped their home opener in front of thousand of adoring fans - but here they were. Having taken over after many a successful year of leading Felswyr State University, Florentine was tasked with the unwelcome task of answering rather hard questions from the sports media. He endeavored to be honest, fair, and measured. These are the answers he gave to the questions asked, which left the reporters impressed with how honest, candid, and well-measured he was.

Question: Why do you think that TJUN-ia was able to pressure Anne-Maurice Vivayavich so often in her third start? The Jaguars ended with five sacks, including a sack-fumble that gave them very good field position. In the play that effectively ended the game - the eighty-three yard interception return by Jake Northridge - she was also pressured. Was she just feeling the pressure?

Florentine: I thought that TJUN-ia did a very good job getting ready for our match. They knew that we had a Quarterback making just her third appearance at the international level - this is only her second start, after all - and Mohammad Al-Khalifa was very clever with how he schemed the delayed blitzes from their linebacking core. Anne-Maurice just doesn't have the experience diagnosing the complex packages, and as it was only our first time facing TJUN-ia, we struggled with getting the information needed to Mikel (Kingston, the center) about what was coming to them. That's a bitter pill to swallow on the preparation front, and I take full responsibility of that. To their credit, TJUN-ia used some packages that they didn't do in their first two games, but we'll get better at mid-game adjustments. We have to.

Question: Speaking of Anne-Maurice, what is the timetable for Sarai's return? What will you do to continue to ease Anne-Maurice into the position while Sarai is out? How early do you think you'll have Sarai come back, if she is able?

Florentine: Our physios tell me that Sarai's sprained wrist on her left hand, which is her throwing hand, is expected to heal up in time for the second round-robin. That means that we're going to have to complete the first seven games without her. We've been working with getting Anne-Maurice up to speed, and we think that she's now ready to bear the full brunt of the expanded playbook. We've kept things simple for her - and she's done rather well, with three touchdowns in her two starts - but it's about time that we opened things up. Nisha is excited to give Anne-Maurice all the opportunities, and we think that with the pieces we have around the Quarterback position, she'll do fine.

Question: Is that why the team has been so conservative? The Iron Legion punted three times from just past midfield instead of going for it, twice in fourth-and-short positions where you could've gone for a short run or even a screen pass. What made you think that the defense could handle it, even when Gareth Baldwin was having a decent enough game for the Jaguars?

Florentine: We noticed that the interior of their defensive front was playing rather well, and Lana wasn't having much success going through the middle. Though Baldwin had some nice throws, we thought that our corners and the secondary were reading the game well - Lisa showed who she was once again in that huge pick in the Second Quarter - and that we were starting to get some pressure on him. If you take away that pick-six late, we were only down by three, and most of that was because the defense was stepping up to put Anne-Maurice in good positions. When you have a player like Sarai out, you have to rely on other leaders to step up, and Park Mi-Hyeon and Jere Rinaldi were making a case to have us lean on them. We held them to five field goals and only two scores, after all.

Question: You've spoken about their defensive front. Karl von Liechten was a major problem. He sacked Vivayavich twice, forced that sack-fumble, and had two other tackles for loss. Why was it that the Iron Legion had such a hard time blocking him?

Florentine: Give the guy some credit - he's a heck of a player. Perry tried his best out there, but got beat, and though we sent some help at times to try to contain, it wasn't enough. We tried chipping him with the Tight End, Fullback, even the Running Back, but he played with a relentless motor and just took the opportunities given to him. We'll work on protecting Anne-Maurice better. We have to, if we're going to navigate this stretch without Sarai without dropping too many more games.

Question: What will you do in the games to come to make sure that the Iron Legion don't lose again?

Florentine: We have Valanora next. They're in the same boat as us - a 1-2 record - but they've shown that they can score. It's going to be challenge to head into Mar Sara and get that win. Like I said, we're going to open up the playbook, let Lana run wild, and let Anne-Maurice make the throws that we know she can. We're going to work on protection to make sure she'll have the time she needs. Defensively, we're going to have to stop the run, and the deep pass with the play-action. This is a long qualifying campaign, but we have four more games before Sarai makes her hopefully triumphant return. There is no point in looking too far ahead - we just have to play the game that is in front of us, hopefully improve to .500, and see what we can do after that.

Question: Any last things you want to say about the game?

Florentine: This is the worst you're going to see of this team. We're going to get our stuff together, and we're going to bounce back. That's a promise.

Head Coach: Nabru RE'YEM
Age: 48 | Years as Head Coach: 3

The former Head Coach of two-time Avatarian Collegiate Sports Confederation National Champions, the Adirolf Gators, Nabru Re'yem was selected from a pool of fifteen collegiate and professional Coaches to command Gyatso-kai's first-ever National Gridiron team. Considered one of the most accomplished practitioners of the spread offence, Re'yem's teams at Bowling Blue, Hatu State, Adirolf, as well as his first professional team in Rev’ned all have run the spread, chiefly utilising a run-first variation, often tweaked to fit his offensive personnel; for example, Re'yem's first two years ad Adirolf skewed toward a drop-back passing attack lead by Risch Keal, while Alex Smith and Mit Wobet lead an option run-based spread. It would be under this offence that Re'yem would win twp ACSC titles, as well as becoming the first coach to lead a non-CBS conference team (Hatu State) to a CBS bowl and coaching a Shaoyin Trophy winner (Wobet) and graduating a player who became a number one overall pick in the Republic Gaan'shuk League (RGL) draft.

General Manager: SUZUKI Haru
Age: 68 | Years At Job: 3

The General Manger of the National Team, Suzuki Haru has had quite the experiences managing teams. First selected as the General Manager of FC Mando back in 1988, he has since bounced between two different sports in three nations; heading FC Mando from 1996-2001, then making the leap to RC United from 2001-2010, and since 2011, heading the Imami Dolphins organisation in the RGL. Announced as the National GM, Suzuki has been incredibly busy travelling around the Republics as well as abroad, seeking players from multiple gridiron leagues who possess Avatarian citizenship to play on the team.

Special Teams Cooridnator: NGUYEN Thomas
Age: 47 | Years At Job: 3

Not much is known is about Nguyen, save that he has been the secondary coach at Adirolf for the past two seasons, and the team has made a strong turn-around to have the #3 ranked secondary in the league when compared to their last-place position in the 2021.1 Season

Offensive Coordinator: YAMAHUCHI Qing
Age: 50 | Years At Job: 3

While most offensive coaches are out on the field during practices, giving players invaluable lessons thanks to years of experience, Yamahuchi is not given such a chance. With Re’yem’s almost-obsessive need to control everything at practice, Yamahuchi is left to call the plays during games and deal with the offensive lessons at team meeting... Poor guy...

Quaterbacks Coach: CHEN Takumi
Age: 50 | Years At Job: 3

Chen spent nearly fifteen years in Avatarian gridiron and gaan'shuk games as a spread quaterback, with all of the intangibles which made him great. The simple fact that he has such a wealth of knowledge at his disposal makes him probably one of the best QB coaches around to develop the still-young talents of Wobet and Notwen; both of whom are constantly criticized in the RGL for their ‘unique’ styles.

Running Backs Coach: SATO Yuudai
Age: 56 | Years At Job: 3

An impressive running back in the prime of his career, Sato has managed to piece together many prime combos in his years as Head Coach of Penoc State. By adding him to the national team, Re'yem hopes to bring the 'luck' Sato seems to naturally seep onto any team he has been a part of.

Receivers Coach: SHAO Liju
Age: 62 | Years At Job: 3

An old receiver who played in the days of the Pass Offence's prime, Shao has continued to impress the Management of the National Team in the three years as Receiver's Coach at the University of Imaim; given weak and less-than-average talented players, he has continued to develop a team which ranks in the Top 10 on Receiving throughout the RGL. Though, Receivers are only a part of the equation, and Shao has much work to be completed before the National Team is even considered a threat on the International stage...

Offensive Line Coach: YAMAHUCHI Qing
Age: 49 | Years At Job: 3

Taking a page from his college days, Re’yem assigned Yamahuchi has both Offensive Line Coach AND Offensive Coordinator. However, were has in the OffCo role Re’yem is constantly mucking around, Yamahuchi is more free to do his job at OLC; utilising the years of experience he has as being the Offensive Line Coach of three Supreme Bowl teams to help form a decent national team.

Defensive Coordinator: NAKAMURA Yoshi
Age: 42 | Years At Job: 3

Left to his own devices by Re'yem, Nakamura is in charge of all defensive play-calling. Having led the best defence in the RGL for the past seven years, Nakamura is the architect for the Boarcupine's flexible defence; one which the team hopes to not only slow down the momentum of any successful plays, but to outright stop them in their tracks.

Defensive Line Coach: KOIZUMI Hideyoshi
Age: 47 | Years At Job: 3

Having served on the defensive line of the RGL's top team for nearly fifteen years, Koizumi has accumulated much knowledge and experience when it comes to the defence for the Enceri Jets, which Re’yem hopes to bring to the Boarcupines.

Linebackers Coach: ALMEC Julien
Age: 37 | Years At Job: 3

Almec just recently retired from his record-setting career as a linebacker with the Yinduchengshi Maju; while he knows his position better than anyone in Gyatso-kai, he has yet to hold any real coaching job save Senior Lineback at Maju camps. Only time will tell us how great or how poor he is at passing on his knowledge.

Secondary Coach: NGUYEN Thomas
Age: 46 | Years At Job: 3

With so few players to handle, it would make little sense for the Boarcupines to hire an individual coach as opposed to simply utilising the available staff. As such, Nguyen pulls double-duty as both Secondary Coordinator and Secondary Coach.

As the fifth-most common sport in the Avatarian Republics – after Ice Hockey, Football, Pro-Bending, and Collegiate Hockey – the development of the Republic Gridiron League has not been quite up to snuff when compared to the other dominant leagues in Gyatso-kai. As such, most RGL teams share facilities with their RPFL counterparts, or in the rare instance, have a dedicated facility or will have one in the future.

Official Name: Stadia Capital
Local Name: The Stadia
Seating Capacitu: 78,050
Location: Beijing, Jing Prefecture, Earth Kingdom, Gyatso-kai
Games Hosted: Matchday 03 vs Ko-oren, Matchday 07 vs Saint-Jean-Jacques et Burnham-on-Stove, Matchday 11 vs Rouyoute, Matchday 13 vs Cassadaigua
Located on the far western shores of Gyatso-kai, Beijing is one of the largest Earth Kingdom Cities in the nation. Taking its name from the bastion-like construction of Beijing, as well as its status as the capital of the fledgling Republics before the Unification, the Stadia Capital is primarily a football arena that will host multiple different sporting and entertainment events throughout the year; from concerts to exhibition matches to season games in three sports. For the RGL, the Stadia serves as the home of the Beijing Ironclaws, who while not the greatest team in the league, have found themselves amidst the upper tiers of the standings.

Given that Beijing is an Earth Kingdom City, fans in attendance will be given a crash course in Earth Kingdom traditions and life. Do not be surprised should you come across bending in your journey; unlike the egalitarian nature of Republic City and the territories of the United Republics, Earth Kingdom people take great pride to incorporate their natural bending talents into their everyday lives. From train-car systems that rely on gravity to come downhill and bending to move uphill, to the Pro-Bending League pre-season games that will be held at the Earthen Ring during the two matchdays, visitors from around the multi-verse will get a taste of the blending of the traditional and the modern that occurs throughout the Republics.

Official Name: Zhou Imaim Field at BisonExpress Stadium
Local Name: 'Bison Bowl'
Seating Capacit:y 24,500
Location: Imaim City, Hajak’ai Province, Mandalore, Gyatso-kai
Games Hosted: Matchday 01 vs Cardenao, Matchday 05 vs A Place Somewhere, Matchday 09 vs Saint Kanye

Of the eighteen RGL teams, only five possess their own dedicated stadiums; and given the lower popularity of the RGL, those five stadiums house significantly smaller audiences than their Hockey or Football counterparts. One of those five teams – and the one chosen to host two of the World Bowl matches – is the Imaim Dolphins. One of the Elder Six – the six founding teams of the RGL – the Imaim Dolphins are far from the best of the league, often finishing in the middle of the league or making it to the playoffs, only to lose in the first round. However, the fanbase of the team is absolutely insane when it comes to their support of the Dolphins. Imaim is also a picturesque town for a gridiron team: Located just a stone’s throw across the Kaowlu Bay from Nandikiang City, the waterfront city of Imaim is a trade hub for the Central Region of Gyatso-kai. As such, the city is constantly bustling with activity – from the shallow water port of Port Ne’tra’piruun to its never-sleeping downtown districts, Imaim is an outlier when it comes to Mandalorian cities in regard to their ‘metropolitan’ status.

Expect to see little in the traditional Mandalorian ways, and more of a fusion of modern Avatarian fashion with Mandalorian sensibilities. Think adding the Four Nations to a blender and having a Mando make the dish.

BisonExpress Stadium – so named for their sponsor – is a dedicated gridiron stadium, seating just under twenty-five-thousand fans of the Teal & Orange in lavish surroundings. Certainly not a bastion of sporting legends like those found in Kelita or Itakawai, Imaim has proven quite the investment for the RGL, and one can expect to see not only the Red & Gold of the national jerseys filling the crowd, but a solid mix of the Dolphins’ trademark colors as well.

Offence

Style: +3.0 out of +5.0
Primary Front: Spread Option
Overview: A team which showcases the speed and agility needed to effectively run a Spread Option style of play. Expect Wobet to pass the ball just as often as he runs it in. When under Notwen, you can expect just a bit more passing, but still, the offence will try and spread the defence wide and create perfect centre lanes for passing or rushing...

#15 - Mit WOBET – TEAM CAPTAIN
Height: 191cm | Weight: 111kg | Age: 24 | College: University of Adirolf | Professional: Rev'ned Stallions

The starting quaterback and the Captain of the Boarcupines, Mit Wobet is one of the most prolific Avatarian players in the 21st Century. Holding multiple records in the ASCA's Southeastern Conference, Wobet eventually went on to lead the Adirolf Gators to back-to-back ACSC National Championships. Wobet is known as a dual threat quaterback; one who as adept at rushing as he is at passing the football. With his unorthodox RGL skills, frequent demonstrations of his religious devotion, combined with his team's recent success, Wobet has attracted unprecedented praise, criticism, and attention from the sporting media and beyond.
Rating: A+ - Team Relationship: A+ - Morale: A+ - Form: A

#13 - Mac NOTWEN
Height: 196cm | Weight: 112kg | Age: 22 | College: University of Kibago | Professional: Linacaro Panthers

Much like his starting counterpart, Mac Notwen comes from a very prolific collegiate career; originally starting on the same team as Wobet in 2017, Notwen would end up transferring to Kibago so as to gain a starting position as opposed to back-up. He would lead Kibago to the 2020 Avatarian Collegiate Sports Confederation National Champions and then be drafted in the first round in the 2020 RGL Draft. Another double-threat, Notwen is more adept at passing, and is often brought in when the rush is not working out and Wobet is being shutdown on the run.
Rating: A - Team Relationship: A - Morale: B - Form: A

#23 - TACHIBANA Huang
Height: 182cm | Weight: 106kg | Age: 30 | College: University of Imaim | Professional: Rev'ned Stallions

In his very first professional run, Tachibana broke two defensive line tackles, six more running down the field for a 93-yard touchdown. Since then, he has continued to set multiple records season after season. Just last season, he set a team record for 180 yards in a game with ten carries and three touchdowns.
Rating: A - Team Relationship: B - Morale: A - Form: A

#35 - SHUI Jiamah
Height: 175cm | Weight: 97kg | Age: 26 | College: University of Omashu | Professional: Hitomori Hawks

Shui is a fragile speedster amongst full-sized trucks. Shui is only good in between the tackles so long as he has good blocks from the offensive lines. Running to the outside, or playing as more of a halfback, though, is a different tale. Shui is one of the fastest players on the offence, and if Shui gets free of the defence, few can catch him.
Rating: B - Team Relationship: B - Morale: B - Form: A

#37 - SATO Jirou
Height: 175cm | Weight: 90kg| Age: 25 | College: University of Kibago| Professional: Kamino Cloners

Another smaller running back, Sato lacks Tachibana's power through the middle of the field, however, he does possess enough speed to make it between the tackles. In addition, his strength is very respectable; which consider he spends his time at Kamino facing defensive men twice his size, yet he is still able to get the ball out is a feat on its own.
Rating: B- - Team Relationship: A - Morale: B - Form: C

#42 - LIN Shun
Height: 180cm | Weight: 102kg | Age: 25 | College: Penoc State University | Professional:Bralin Accipiters

Originally drafted to the Kyrimorut Troopers fresh out of Penoc State, Lin saw little success there. However, with the expansion of the RGL in 2019.3 , he soon found himself on the newest team in the league, the Bralin Accipiters. While his skills and morale leave much to be desired, his speed and form are incredibly strong; many suspect this is why he was brought onto the team. Given his size over Sato, expect to see Lin make more substitutions on the second line, while Larsen brings up front-line support.
Rating: B- - Team Relationship: B - Morale: C - Form: A

#46 - Re'spen LARSEN
Height: 188cm | Weight: 111kg | Age: 28| College: University of Omashu | Professional: Bralin Accipiters
**NOTE: Plays as Fullback**

Much like Lin, Larsen is much more the physical running back; with size, strength, and speed on his side, one can only imagine why Larsen was not on a higher line. It all comes down to morale and his relationship with the team; given his mentality, Larsen is a defeatist, one who is far more prone to lay down and give up then to get back up and fight... though with such a strong form, we can still expect to see him on the field at least twice a game. Also, given that he actually plays at the fullback position, anytime we see the Boarcupines shift from the Spread, expect to see Larsen right in the middle of it all.
Rating: C+ - Team Relationship: C - Morale: C - Form: B

#27 - HASHIMOTOIsamu
Height: 180cm| Weight: 91kg | Age: 24 | College: Roku Univesity | Professional: Kamino Cloners

Having only played two years of professional ball is not something uncommon on the Boarcupines. However, Hashimoto snuck onto the playing roster without anyone really noticing. While Hashimoto possesses some speed, some size, and decent hands, he is still a developing player out of college, though the signs point to a bright future.

#33 - YU Wei
Height: 180cm | Weight: 103kg| Age: 27 | College: Saigon City College | Professional: Yinuutki Jotuns

Having saved his chances with the national team thanks to a fantastic performance in the Supreme Bowl with the second-place Yinuutki Jotuns, Yu earns his place as a #4 running back held in reserve. Yu will rotate around with other running backs, or even may play inside-receiver on plays when his amazing speed can come into use. Many feel Yu should be placed into the Receiver Corps, yet Re'yem still keeps him in the Running Corps...

#40 - BAI Rikuto
Height: 184cm | Weight: 112kg | Age: 24 | College: Royal Earth University | Professional: Braslin Accipiters
**NOTE: Plays as Fullback**

After taking a year in-between college and his professional career to serve a tour of duty in Gaoling, Bai Rikuto makes the national team after just a single season of professional ball. Brought in mostly due to his experience running the spread at REU, Bai is not exactly a stand-out receiver, since his position at REU was first-line fullback. However, Re'yem hopes to see him develop as a strong running back in the national team in Michael VII.

#19 - Atin UTHAN
Height: 180cm | Weight: 83kg | Age: 24 | College: Hatsu State University | Professional: Rev'ned Stallions
***Note - First Choice Punt Returner, Second Choice Kick Returner ***

Drafted to the Stallions the season before the arrival of Webot, Atin Uthan was given just a year before the Stallions reverted back to his old college style. Since then, he has moved up the depth chart, finding himself in the first squad for the first time since his third season at Hatsu State. Coming in as a tremendously physical player, Uthan comes off of a close call in the Supreme Bowl for the RGL. Critical to the games he plays in due to his knack at making big plays and covering his zones, Uthan has made a habit in Rev'ned of making highlight-reel-worthy interceptions, or just ruining a perfect pass by knocking it into the ground.
Rating: A - Team Relationship: A - Morale: A - Form: A

#88 - A'den KATO
Height: 190cm | Weight: 107kg | Age: 24 | College: Hatsu State University | Professional: Itakawai Beroyas

A big-play receiver, Kato was a college teammate of Uthan, which is likely why he was picked for the national team opposite of him. While he has terrific hands, incredible speed and a kangaroo-like leaping prowess, Kato also is large enough and strong enough to be a true physical player, which you can see him from time-to-time excelling in pushing heavier defencemen back and back and back some more...
Rating: A - Team Relationship: A - Morale: A - Form: A

#87 - GANG Ru
Height: 190cm | Weight: 99kg | Age: 24 | College: Roku University | Professional: Kamino Cloners
***Note - Second Choice Punt Returner, Third Choice Kick Returner***

A player very similar to Kato in almost all areas, Gang Ru faces the challenges of size against the much larger defensive ends; the same height as Kato, Gang is about eight kilos lighter. He is somewhat quicker on the draw than Kato, which means he could end up with more time on the field. He stills needs to work on his form, which still leaves much to be desired, which surprises many as to his selection.
Rating: B - Team Relationship: B - Morale: A - Form: B

#18 - Arthit SOMCHAI
Height: 180cm | Weight: 85kg | Age: 24 | College: University of Omashu | Professional: Kamino Cloners

Another young receiver, Somchai was added to the team so as to provide depth to the veteran-filled reserves. With some big-play potential, Somchai made many pushes for the Cloners in the last half of the 202.1 Season, however, some argue his form leaves much to be desired....
Rating: B - Team Relationship: B - Morale: B - Form: C

#12 - GI Klahan Moon
Height: 182cm | Weight: 86kg | Age: 27 | College: University of Omashu | Professional: Itakawai Beroyas

A career wide receiver for the Beroyas, Gi is also the primary kick returner for the Boarcupines. Given his immense speed, few can stop him, let alone keep up with him. However, to gain such speed, he is not the biggest of men on the team. This lack of size has hampered his development through his career; as a result of a heavy hit in the RFC Playoffs, Gi missed the first half of the 2021.2 season.
Rating: B - Team Relationship: B - Morale: B - Form: A

#83 - QING Kikwan
Height: 187cm | Weight: 88kg | Age: 22 | College: University of the Southern Tribes | Professional: Kamino Cloners

The youngest player on the team, drafted in the first second round of the 2021.3 draft, Qing Kikwan comes in off of a stellar college career. However, this college career did not translate to a great professional career. Instead, it brought him from the first string of the UST Walruses to the third string of the Cloners. While his speed is impressive, his hands are just sub-par and his vision is not terrific. With time, Qing will develop into a great receiver... but that time is still to come.
Rating: C - Team Relationship: C - Morale: C - Form: B

#82 - PAM Shao
Height: 179cm | Weight: 84kg | Age: 27 | College: Penoc State University | Professional: Bralin Accipiters (2012.1-)

As a player who has moved around a bit, Pam has made the constant move from Mando teams to Mando teams to Mando teams. This continues to solidify his role as a quick runner with massive hands which make catching a silverbass look like picking up an ajai fruit. However, why he made it to the reserves of the Boarcupine no one can quite understand. Perhaps it is just a coincidence... perhaps it is to help develop the 24-years-old front two lines...

#14 - Bai'a ORTON
Height: 190cm | Weight: 90kg | Age: 25 | College:

#86 - Leinard FELLS
Height: 192cm | Weight: 114kg | Age: 28 | College: University of Kibago | Professional: Itakawai Beroyas

The number one draft pick of 2020.3, Fells is still playing for the same team that drafted him. A classic tightend, who simply knows his job and gets it done without any questions.
Rating: A - Team Relationship: A - Morale: A - Form: A

#81 - OIR'ASOR Dante
Height: 193cm| Weight: 113kg | Age: 27 | College:
University of Adirolf | Professional: Rev'ned Stallions

Very similar to his first-line counterpart, Oir’asor is another classic tightend. He gets the job done each and every time, though, you can expect a few slips in his reading ability from time to time. Luckily, he has experience --- both professional and collegiate --- with Wobet, so the two are able to interact very well.

#78 - Hakoda KUNAYAK
Height: 198cm | Weight: 142kg | Age: 25 | College: Roku University | Professional: Kyrimorut Troopers
**Note: Plays as Left Tackle**

Kunayak is a strong left tackle, who while at RU developed wonderfully in their run-first system. Drafted in the first round of the 2020.2 draft, he soon found himself in more of pass-protection role at Kyrimorut. Even with the Boarcupines, he is finding his niche; however, he is not finding it fast-enough. So, as always, rotation will see him swapped around with Clark when we see Notwen take the helm.
Rating: A- - Team Relationship: B - Morale: B - Form: A

#75 - Sir'ch CLARK
Height: 196cm | Weight: 139kg | Age: 26 | College: Royal Earth University | Professional: Kamino Cloners
**Note: Plays as Left Tackle**

Another solid left tackle on the Boarcupines offensive line. Clark is equally as great as Kunayak, though, he is slightly more adapted to the Spread Offence utilised by the team. Expect to see him rotated around with Kunayak whenever Wobet is at the head.
Rating: A - Team Relationship: A - Morale: B - Form: A

#67 – Ma’jau QIPA’LO
Height: 194cm | Weight: 140 kg | Age: 22 | College: University of Adirolf | Professional: Rev'ned Stallions
**Note: Plays as Left Tackle**

A young gun fresh from a championship season with the Gators, Qipa’los is as adept at running with the Spread as any of the left tackles on the team. However, while his knowledge is incomparable, his experience is lacking, which is why Re'yem has him in the third slot. With time, he will be magnificent, but for now, he is just good.
Rating: B+ - Team Relationship: B - Morale: A - Form: B

#68 - Beane ZALES
Height: 193cm | Weight: 138kg| Age: 25 | College: Penoc State University | Professional: Itakawai Beroyas
**Note: Plays as Left Guard**

Zales is a ferocious blocker, which is great, considering how important guards are in stalling the defence to allow the time needed for the Spread to work.
Rating: A+ - Team Relationship: A - Morale: A - Form: A

# 73- Kalin KUPER
Height: 193cm | Weight: 137kg | Age: 29 | College: Northern University | Professional: Rev'ned Stallions
**Note: Plays as Left Guard**

A fierce competitor, honed by several high-value contest at Northern University and at Rev'ned, Kuper is not to be underestimated. The most experience left guard on the team, Kuper imparts his time-earned wisdom to the younger men on the line. He is not the best at the position, though, his experience does outrank his lack of form.
Rating: B - Team Relationship: A - Morale: B - Form: C

#65 - Kiya MIR’IM
Height: 190cm | Weight: 143kg | Age: 29| College: University of Adirolf | Professional: Kamino Cloners
**Note: Plays as Centre**

After serving four years with the Grand Army of the Republic, Mir’im has become an impressive presence on the field. A massive man, who has maintained his form and shape since graduating from Adirolf, he was drafted by the Cloners and has since developed into one hell of a steady hand for the offence there. He plays with the same mentality as many guards; this equates to one fine blocker who tends to enjoy taking tackles head-on.
Rating: A - Team Relationship: A - Morale: A - Form: A

#50 - MONGOYAK Tiquuvit
Height: 190cm | Weight: 138kg | Age: 24 | College: Hatsu State University | Professional: Kyrimoruty Troopers
**Note: Plays as Centre**

Another very capable blocker for the Boarcupines, Mongoyak brings youth to support the experience of Mir’im. Another massive man on the line who enjoys hitting people just a little too much.
Rating: B - Team Relationship: A - Morale: B - Form: B

#71 - Russ HOCHSTEIN
Height: 193cm | Weight: 138kg | Age: 36 | College: Saigon City College | Professional:, Hitomori Hawks
**Note: Plays as Right Guard**

The veteran of the Boarcupines, Hochstein has still managed to keep a foot on his younger competition. Still a very capable and aggressive guard, Hochstein still resembles his prime when he helped lead three teams to championship seasons; Itakawai in 2018.4, Rev’ned in 2019.2, and Hitomori in 2020.1 Though he is getting a little long in the tooth, he is still a terrifying man to face on the field.

#74 - NOONGWOOK Kai
Height: 200cm | Weight: 150kg | Age: 24 | College: University of Imaim | Professional: Itakawai Beroyas
**Note: Plays as Right Tackle**

Noongwook is a right tackle who is as good at pass protection as he is at run blocking. He garnishes the favour of Re'yem due to his love of playing and the love of doing his job well. Extremely devoted to the team, he was ejected from a college game when the opposition gave an illegal hit to his quaterback... and Noongwook felt it best to take off his helmet and bash it upside the hitter when he got up. One of the ASCA's best remembered games.
Rating: A+ - Team Relationship: A - Morale: A - Form: A

#76 – Yi’no HILLS
Height: 196cm | Weight: 139kg | Age: 27 | College: University of the Southern Tribes | Professional: Braslin Accipiters
**Note: Plays as Right Tackle**

Hills is a solid all-around player, but is not at the same level of talent as his compatriots. He fills in when needed, and is known from time to time to deliver a terrific performance, however, do not expect to see him outperform Noongwook, and Hills will remain in the second line of the right tackle position.
Rating: B - Team Relationship: B - Morale: A - Form: C

#72 - Nayr RISHAR
Height: 196cm | Weight: 136kg | Age: 26 | College: University of Omashu | Professional: Rev'ned Stallions
**Note: Plays as Right Tackle:**

A younger player who has seen much growth since his days at Omashu, Rishar is a very strong and big tackle, though he just lacks the talent of Noongwook or Hills. He fills in the thrid spot well, and expect to see him play every other game or so, or even when Noongwook needs rest mid-game.
Rating: B- - Team Relationship: B - Morale: C+ - Form: C+

Defence

Style: -1.0 out of -5.0
Primary Front: 4-3 defence
Overview: This defence is designed with a blitz-heavy approach in mind. While it is filled with many great talents, it is not the best aspect of the Boarcupines, and many see the Baptism of Iron as a means to test the men on the line. The secondary is comprised of the best players in the league, and as such, is an integral part of the team.

#96 - REIN’UN Ch’tim
Height: 193cm | Weight: 132kg | Age: 24 | College: University of Adiolf | Professional: Rev’ned Stallions
**Note: Plays as Right Tackle**

Slightly smaller than Leybunk on the left, Rein’un is the best defensive lineman playing for the Boarcupines. With his professional years spent running the 4-3, not to mention his entire college career under the same front, Rein’un knows what he is doing, and he does it very well. While he is no speed-demon, he is quick enough on his feet so as to pose a threat to inside-rushers, and he has more than once laid out a quarterback who underestimated him.
Rating: A - Team Relationship: A - Morale: B - Form: A

#77 - LEYBUNK Ri’bro
Height: 188cm | Weight: 139kg | Age: 28 | College: Adirolf State University | Professional: Enceri Jets
**Note: Plays as Left Tackle**

A terrific nose for passers and ball-carriers, Leybunk is a very capable tackle who fills the role of a run-stopper for the Boarcupines. With decent explosiveness off the line and having a knack for mucking the offensive line up just enough to stop any progress, Leybunk brings experience and charisma to any team he is on.
Rating: A - Team Relationship: A - Morale: A - Form: A

#98 - NAY’R Nemac
Height: 196cm | Weight: 138kg | Age: 27 | College: HAtsu State University | Professional: Taishen Tigers (2010.2-2011.3)
**Note: Plays as Left Tackle**

Nay’r is very efficient as a tackle, able to read the offence from the other side and know exactly who it is he needs to block and stall. Not really that terrific of a player, though his form is impeccable; likely the result of his collegiate days under a head coach who would drill the basics for hours...
Rating: B - Team Relationship: B - Morale: B - Form: A

#79 - MASTHO Cusmar
Height: 190cm | Weight: 143kg | Age: 26 | College: University of Adirolf | Professional: Kyrimorut Troopers
**Note: Plays as Right Tackle**

An explosive tackle, Mastho is someone who can cause serious damage on the inside. Though his form needs work, he is under the tutelage of his college coach, and as such, we can be sure to see him improve with time.
Rating: B - Team Relationship: A - Morale: B - Form: C

#91 - SREYA Ro’er
Height: 190cm | Weight: 124kg | Age: 26 | College: Royal Earth University | Professional: Rev’ned Stallions
**Note: Plays as Right Defensive End**

A sharp contrast to the quiet and polite Vilmerud, Sreya Ro’er is a stereotypical Mando; boisterous, energetic and amazingly intelligent. Known for constantly shuffling about prior to the snap, Sreya serves as a huge distraction on the line, drawing attention to himself and away from the play. Usually works pretty well, considering the amount of mando’a profanities he shouts.
Rating: A - Team Relationship: A - Morale: A - Form: A

#92 - VILMERUD Vis’el
Height: 198 cm | Weight: 110kg | Age: 25 | College: Ba Sing Se State University | Professional: Enceri Jets
**Note: Plays as Left Defensive End**

Vilmerud is the star player of the defensive line. Incredibly fast and stong, with the ability to make idiots out of most of his offensive counterparts, Vilmerud is as flexible as player as they come. With an impressive work ethic and the manners of a reform school graduate, Vilmerud is a bag of contradictions compared to his first-line counterpart, Sreya Ro’er.

#90 - TERHUN Son’ja
Height: 193cm | Weight: 122kg | Age: 28| College: University of Omashu | Professional: Lolosi Camelephants
**Note: Plays as Right Defensive End**

Siliga’s partner on the end, Terhun is a good player, even though he is still in need of work. Whereas Siliga has only played professionally for two years, it has been five years since Terhun was at UO, and they both are on par for development. It may be sometime until Terhan finds himself on the first line, but until then, he seems perfectly content playing second fiddle.
Rating: B - Team Relationship: A - Morale: B - Form: B

#95 – Ver’leas SILIGA
Height: 196cm | Weight: 122kg | Age: 25 | College: University of Adirolf | Professional: Republic Guardians (2011.4)
**Note: Plays as Left Defensive End**

Siliga is a solid, all-around defensive end who can play the run and pass solidly. At 25 years-of-age, he is still developing, so expecting a good deal of playing time is not likely. However, he is talented, so you can expect him to show when the time comes...

#97 – Rem’jay LAEB
Height: 190cm | Weight: 125kg | Age: 24 | College: University of the Southern Tribes | Professional: Hitomori Hawks

Playing at both left and right defensive ends, Laeb has learned a great deal in his professional career. While still a pass-rusher first, his run-stopping skills have greatly improved since his debut in 2011 for Hitomori.

#58 - RELLIM Von
Height: 190cm | Weight: 109kg | Age: 22 | College: Saigon City College | Professional: Taishen Tigers
**Note: Plays as Left Linebacker**

Recruited straight out of SCC, Rellim distinguished himself in college as someone who should never be underestimated. He is most suited for attacking, moving forward to stop the run or contribute to the pass-rush, as opposed to working in coverage. That is why Ganhan is on the team...
Rating: A - Team Relationship: A - Morale: A - Form: B

#55 – Rilc’e AMSILLI
Height: 184cm | Weight: 110kg | Age: 29 | College: University of Imaim | Professional: Enceri Jets
**Note: Plays as Right Linebacker**

Following a three season hiatus in which he volunteered to aid the southern regions following the Concordian dissent, Amsilli returned to Enceri a renewed man. He can blitz harder than any man on the line, considering his size when compared to the other monsters who make up the defensive line. He contributes greatly to the pass-rush, and is able to cover short-routes during zone defence.

#52 - OBIOZOR Ril
Height: 193cm | Weight: 113kg | Age: 25 | College: Hatsu State University | Professional: Futoshi Saints
**Note: Plays as Right Linebacker**

Having played for three teams, Obiozor has some very interesting knowledge to contribute to the linebackers. He is highly intelligent, and even graduated from Hastu State with a 3.98 GPA and a degree in Particle Sciences. Surprising he chose to play get’shuk instead of winning a Noble Prize...

#57 - GANHAN Ri’om
Height: 190cm | Weight: 124kg | Age: 32 | College: University of Omashu| Professional: Hitomori Hawks
**Note: Plays as Left Linebacker**

Having two championship rings in his possession from his years in Kamino, Ganhan is still at the peak of his form. With his main strength in guarding the middle, he is still quite capable of carrying out other responsibilities, such as pass rushing and stopping the run with equal efficiency.
Rating: B+ - Team Relationship: A - Morale: C - Form: A

#59 - IWUH Nair
Height: 182cm | Weight: 108kg | Age: 27 | College: Keldabe State University | Professional: Itakawai Beroyas
**Note: Plays as Right Linebacker**

Another player whose development continues to this day, Iwuh would have found himself higher in the depth chart had he not had to compete against the likes of Amsilli and Obiozor. He does everything that the two players above him can do just as well, but his speed and knowledge of the game still need to improve before he can place higher.
Rating: B- - Team Relationship: B - Morale: C - Form: B

#53 - MEDMOHA Keim
Height: 190cm | Weight: 111kg | Age: 23 | College: University of Adirolf | Professional: Rev’ned Stallions
**Note: Plays as Left Linebacker**

Drafted right after the completion of his college season, Medmoha found a home in Rev’ned under his former coach, which is perhaps how he found his way into the National team. He is an average linebacker, nothing fancy or stand-outish about him.

#51 - SYAM Eoj’ka
Height: 180cm | Weight: 113kg | Age: 26 | College: University of Omashu | Professional: Taishen Tigers

Syam is a beast of a player; unimaginably strong, incredibly intelligent, and quick on the draw. Still developing as a player, Syam is solid in all of the physical categories of a player, yet it is simply his intelligence which sets him miles apart from his teammates.

#56 – Tean INGIRV
Height: 184cm | Weight: 109kg | Age: 23 | College: University of Adirolf | Professional: Itakawai Beroyas

A very capable inside linebacker, Ingirv’s main strength is in covering the middle, however, he is still very capable of pass rushing as well as stopping the run.

#24 - LEYIAB Cyr’o – DEFENSIVE CAPTAIN
Height: 182cm | Weight: 88kg | Age: 33 | College: University of Adirolf | Professional: Hitomori Hawks
**Note: Plays as Left Cornerback**

The most experienced play-making corner available in Gyatso-kai, Ley’iab has the distinction of playing for just a single team in his ten year professional career: Whereas most players end up spending five to six years with a team, Ley’iab beats the odds. Even though he is high in age, he is very fast and has an instinctive knack for placing himself between the airborne ball and the intended receiver. His talent and experience makes him the ranking NCO of the Defence Corps, which many see him as more of a general than as a NCO.

#21 - MADOOGN Rean
Height: 178cm | Weight: 87kg | Age: 33 | College: Keldabe State University | Professional: Kamino Cloners
**Note: Plays as Right Cornerback**

Another seasoned cornerback, Madoogn comes out of Adirolf’s biggest rival at Keldabe State and, given his age, he played plenty of games opposite of Leyiab. As such, he knows his partner’s style very well and the two cornerbacks complement each other vividly.

#25 - RISHA Ris’ch
Height: 177cm | Weight: 86kg | Age: 22 | College: Penoc State University | Professional: Braslin Accipiters
**Note: Plays as Left Cornerback**

The youngest member of the cornerbacks, Risha graduated from Penoc State a semester early so as to qualify for the 2020.3 RGL Draft; finding his home in Braslin in the second round. Risha differs than the first-line cornerbacks in that he is more speed-geared, placing himself easily between the ball and the receiver. While he is not very consistent in getting the interception, he is consistent in keeping the opponent from gaining the first down.
Rating: B - Team Relationship: A - Morale: B - Form: B

#29 - REMOO Shuajo
Height: 178cm | Weight: 84kg | Age: 23 | College: Hatsu State University | Professional: Kamino Cloners
**Note: Plays as Right Cornerback**

Much like Risha, Remoo is a young freshly-drafted player. Not having played in the professional scene long enough to make any big differences in the games he has played. Even faster than Risha, Remoo can keep pace with the fastest and most agile of receivers and this plays well into the hands of the Boarcupines. Expect to see Remoo come out whenever the defence needs a speed boost.

#32 - TERCAR Onty
Height: 175cm | Weight: 79kg | Age: 25 | College: Adirolf State University | Professional: Kamino Cloners
**Note: Plays as Right Cornerback**

A second-line corner back on the Kamino Cloners behind first-string Remoo Shuajo, Tercar is just another solid corner in the line of the Boarcupines. He does a very good job in the secondary, even though he is fairly unremarkable.

#22 - SYD’QUAN
Height: 175cm | Weight: 86kg | Age: 25 | College: Royal Earth University | Professional: Itakawai Beroyas

A mostly speed-based corner, Syd’Quan is not as physical as his compatriots. Due to his flexibility, he is not listed as a left or a right corner back, and he will often fill the void left by fatigue regardless of what side of the field he is running.

#30 - Vid'da TONBRU
Height: 188cm | Weight: 98kg | Age: 24 | College: University of Adirolf | Professional: Rev'ned Stallions
**Note: Plays as Strong Safety**

Coming from the Gators two championships teams, Tonbru is an exceptional player. As exceptional as he is, he is still one of the most under-rated safeties of the RGL. This is due to the fact that he is on one of the most prolific teams in the National Conference. Tonbru excels at coverage, but working on the fly has improved his contributions to the team, and he makes for a solid last-ditch tackle against a lose running back.

**Note: Plays as Free Safety**

Drafted in the fifth round of the 2020.2 RGL Draft, Terrac comes out of one of the premier educational establishments in Gyatso-kai; earning a 3.88 GPA and a degree in Philosophy, Terrac chose to pursue his sports passion. A solid all-around safety who is at his best when playing a responsibility. Terrac is able to shut down receivers and/or entire sections of the field with the utmost in competence, leaving his backfield partner --- Tonbru --- free to make the big plays.

Height: 180cm | Weight: 91kg | Age: 24 | College: Penoc State University | Professional: Kyrimorut Troopers
**Note: Plays as Strong Safety**

Another young safety who will likely develop into a major force for the team in a few years, to support the ever-developing Tonbru. A very capable back-up.

#26 - RE’OM Rahim
Height: 184cm | Weight: 88kg| Age: 22 | College: Saigon City| Professional: Braslin Accipiters
**Note: Plays as Strong Safety**

Signed to the Braslin Accipiters without even being drafted, Re’om is a remarkable player. However, he is still too young to be able to play consistently, though his form is well defined.
Rating: B - Team Relationship: A - Morale: B - Form: B

#20 - KINSDAW Nai’r
Height: 182cm | Weight: 95kg | Age: 38| College: Saigon City College |
Professional: Beijing Ironclaws

**Note: Plays as Strong Safety**

The ‘old wolf’ on the line, brought in as an elder to educate the younger members of the defence. He is still a great player, though to aid the youth in development, Kinsdaw has taken a place on the third line. Quite a difference when compared to his ‘Golden Years’ with the Enceri Jets; winning four championships in five years in the early 2000s
Rating: B - Team Relationship: A - Morale: B - Form: B

#54 - BINN Di'vad
Height: 190cm | Weight: 130kg | Age: 30 | College: Keldabe State University | Professional: Imaim Dolphins

A long snapper who took a break in his career to re-focus on his religion, Binn is a very consistent snapper. Accurate as any one else... Not sure what else needs to be said.
Rating: A+ - Team Relationship: A - Morale: A - Form: A+

#66 - TONPAX Nielo – SPECIAL TEAMS CAPTAIN
Height: 188cm | Weight: 122kg | Age: 34 | College: Northern University | Professional: Republic Guardians

The back-up long snapper, who was signed to the Guardians fresh out of college and undrafted. Since then, he joined the Guardians on two Supreme Bowl championships and then has helped the Stallions pull into contention before being traded back to the Guardians in 2020.1. Not much else to say... Accurate and consistent. Only second due to his age.
Rating: A - Team Relationship: A - Morale: A - Form: A

#5 - Tam PRATER
Height: 180cm | Weight: 82kg | Age: 27 | College: University of South Adirolf | Professional: Kosu PlatypusBears

The most accurate kicker in the Republic Gaat'shuk League, Prater manages to make nearly 85% of his field goals from 45 yards or more. He has an impressive leg, which is in no doubt due to his time playing summer meshgeroya in a professional league. The coaches never mind, just so long as he doesn't let it interfere with his RGL duties.
Rating: A+ - Team Relationship: A - Morale: A - Form: A+

#4 - QUITTCOL Nottrib
Height: 191cm | Weight: 93kg | Age: 27 | College: University of Omashu| Professional: Kyrimorut Troopers

An impressive punter who averages 46.2 yards a kick, Quittcol has been a player with some controversy around him since he first stepped onto a field; dealing with spousal issues when first drafted out of UO, and then his off-the-field antics which left many wondering if Quittcol would mature. It took a late-season trade from Imami to the more-structured Troopers of Kyrimorut for the ‘Untamed Beast of the Waterways’ to finally find his place.
Rating: A - Team Relationship: B - Morale: B - Form: A+

Haran... we are ranked in the Top Ten of the multiverse in gridiron?!

How did that happen?

I mean, sure... we did great in the regional tournies, and even made it into the Round of 16 last World Bowl, but seriously, to find ourselves that high in the rankings and still for me to be uncertain about us? Probably not the best look for me...

Brooklyn Beck (S1:E4)

Postby Drawkland » Sun Sep 24, 2023 11:01 pm

"The Lab Partner"

Football camp came and went, and Brooklyn had enjoyed every second of it. Though she was initially worried about making the college decision, the excitement of getting new letters in the mail every day was enough to outpace the stress, at least in the early going.

The actual school year approached, and that’s what really put a damper on Brooklyn’s spirits. She was a great athlete of course, but her performance in the classroom was rather lacking. She had the excuse of being busy with her extracurricular activities, especially with the volume she personally had to deal with, but she rode that excuse to avoid doing work even when she had the opportunity. After all, her plan was to go pro and make lots of money that way. The actual education part of college was secondary, and she was lucky enough to have the talent to justify the rather shortsighted move. That in mind, Brooklyn trudged into the halls of North Craggold High on the first day just as bummed as everyone else, besides those who hadn’t seen their friends all summer and were just glad to be social again.

Thankfully, her first period class had somebody she knew: Grace Robbins, one of her teammates on North Craggold’s baseball roster. This class was Multiversal History, a social studies elective. Thus, most of this class was composed of history buff juniors and some sophomores, plus a couple seniors. It was not a difficult course. Brooklyn mostly took it because she figured she would one day be traveling across the multiverse for national team games, and she would need some background info to help tell all these far-off nations apart.

“Welcome to Multiversal History,” the teacher began. “This course will cover the major historical events of regions outside of Sonnel, most commonly the big regions traded with using portal travel, such as Atlantian Oceania, Rushmore, Esportiva, et cetera. Our first unit will cover …”

“Did you catch the Knights game last night?” Grace murmured into Brooklyn’s ear. The pair were sitting at the same table, since it appeared this teacher didn’t care enough to institute a seating chart in this elective class.

“Are you kidding? Claire Kirkland on the mound, taking on the Drawk City Scouts? I couldn’t miss it!” Brooklyn replied eagerly. Of course, two young baseball players growing up mere miles away from the home stadium of the Sadeg Knights were huge fans. “I wanted to go to the game, but I had to go to this stupid soccer team meeting yesterday. Couldn’t skip it since I’m already going to be missing enough practices thanks to football. I have to attend everything I can manage.”

“Dude, that blows.” Grace groaned quietly. The teacher continued on with their dry lecture, oblivious to the multiple conversations happening across the room. It appeared Grace and Brooklyn were not alone in their apathy for the course material. “Why are you even doing soccer this year? Didn’t you already get the point for it?”

“Yeah,” Brooklyn confirmed. “It’s mostly to work on my endurance. Plus I mostly play defense, it’s actually kind of fun as a change of pace. Oh, and the team is really solid this year, so I’d love to be able to play in the district or even territorial tournament if we get that far.”

“Fair, fair. Just seems like a lot.”

“It is. But it feels worth it once the season is over.”

“For sure.” The conversation paused for a few minutes as the girls reluctantly began organizing their notebooks for the class and attempting to stay engaged with the lecture. Eventually, Grace spoke up again. “Oh yeah, seriously though, how about Kirkland last night? Dozen strikeouts and didn’t even break a sweat.”

“She’s such a stud. Makes me want to be a pitcher in college.” Brooklyn cracked a smile. “That’d be a lot of stress on the elbow, though. If only I had a bionic arm or something. Wouldn’t that be sick?”

Brooklyn’s second class of the day would not be as fun. She was stuck in a physics lab class, not how she wanted to spend one of her class blocks in senior year, but she had no choice. A bad grade from sophomore year had left her missing a science credit that she needed to graduate. Her advisor allowed her to take an equivalent course, but none of the really easy science electives counted. Brooklyn decided on this physics lab, because on the course description it seemed to be a more hands-on experience. She was a woman of action, after all, so this would potentially be better than an all-lecture class.

Unsurprisingly, none of Brooklyn’s teammates were enrolled in this particular class. It was mostly nerdy science kids, and a few schmucks like her, none of which she was very familiar with. It’s not like it mattered, because the teacher was quick to assign seats.

“Everybody has been assigned a seat,” the teacher, Mrs. Hardy, explained. “The student sitting at the same table as you will be your lab partner for the rest of the year. No exceptions. I’ll give you all a few minutes to get acquainted, and then we’ll go over the syllabus.”

Brooklyn tried not to react when she saw her partner sit down. It was easy to tell why this particular guy was in this course. A pale complexion, skinny, heavy bookbag, the only thing this kid was missing from the geek outfit was a pair of glasses. The bookbag was covered in a small multitude of pins, the logos and icons of which Brooklyn could just barely identify as being from video game franchises.

Great, Brooklyn thought to herself, only halfway sarcastic. Hopefully this guy knows his stuff, so I won’t have to do an ounce of work all year.

“Hi there,” the guy spoke up, extending his hand awkwardly. “My name’s Spencer.”

“Hey,” Brooklyn replied shortly, taking the shake and nearly crushing Spencer’s fingers in the process. It was almost accidental.

“Um,” Spencer hesitated, “What’s your name?”

“My name?” Brooklyn raised her eyebrows, pointing her own thumb at her torso. It would be a little excessive to call Brooklyn a local celebrity, but she knew a good 90% of the school knew her by sight. Her dad had been on the news for decades, and her family were legends in the city of Sadeg. It took every ounce of her strength to not pull the ‘don’t you know who I am?’ routine.

“Yeah.” Spencer replied, a little confused now.

“Brooklyn. Brooklyn Beck, to be precise,” she replied. She cocked her head a little bit, judging his reaction.

“Cool name. Nice to meet you.” Spencer seemed completely unfazed at this reveal. “Hoping for a good year, huh?”

“Uh, yeah,” Brooklyn nodded with tight lips. “I don’t know a whole lot about this stuff, so hopefully I’ll be able to get up to speed.”

“No worries.” Spencer rolled his shoulders, as if he was puffing up his chest. “I wouldn’t say I’m an expert, per se, but the only reason I’m taking this class is because it’s one of the only two classes in the science department that I hadn’t taken before this year. Wanted to get a clean sweep.”

“Oh really?” Brooklyn leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms. This was even better than she thought. “You sound like an expert to me. I guess you’re a science buff of some sort?”

“Yeah. In the STEM club and everything,” Spencer confirmed. He didn’t seem terribly confident, but he was clearly trying his best. There was an awkward pause, which he rushed to fill. “So, um, what do you do? Any extracurriculars?”

“You could say that,” Brooklyn offered. She still wasn’t convinced that he didn’t know who she was. “Sports, mostly. A lot of them. That’s kind of my main focus.”

“I see.” Spencer pursed his lips. “Can’t say I know much about all that.”

“Huh? Know a lot about what?”

“Sports. Like, in general. I dunno, my family’s not the athletic type. Never was interested in any of it.”

“Well, playing, sure, it’s not for everyone,” Brooklyn conceded. “But you follow something, right? Watch a league or anything like that? Marching band, maybe?”

“Can’t say I do,” Spencer shrugged. “Told you, it’s not really my scene. Couldn’t tell you a home goal from a touchdunk, or whatever.”

“You’re joking, right?” Brooklyn tried to keep herself from visibly cringing. “We live in Drawkland. Literally everybody watches at least something. Watching a ballgame or a race is, like, inherently Drawkian. It’s like eating a roast drawk for Founding Day dinner!”

“I guess you’re wrong,” Spencer stuck out a lip. He didn’t seem to be angry, but he was clearly a little put off. “My family does eat roast drawk on Founding Day, for the record.”

“Okay, okay, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it like that.” Brooklyn wasn’t trying to be rude, she was just legitimately dumbfounded that somebody would be that apathetic about sporting competition. In Drawkland of all places! Unbelievable. “I mean, what do you even do when you get home after school?”

“Homework, obviously.”

“Besides that.”

“Hmm, I play some video games. I’ll read a book if I’m in the mood.” Spencer sniffed suddenly, like a slight laugh. “That’s something ‘inherently Drawkian’ too, if you’re being picky. When’s the last time you picked up a book?”

“Hey now,” Brooklyn replied quickly, but her mind was scrambling for an answer. She did read recreationally … sometimes. When she had the time. It wasn’t very often. “Um, I did read a book at the beginning of summer. It was a memoir by a manager of the Sadeg Knights about one of their dynasties.”

“Ah, I see.”

“You … have heard of the Sadeg Knights, right?”

“Yes, it rings a bell.” Spencer squinted his eyes and put a finger to his lips in thought. “They’re the … football team, right?”

“No, dude, baseball!” Brooklyn groaned. “Man, we’re literally 5 miles away from their stadium. You can see the light towers from the third floor!”

“I’m telling you, I don’t know anything about that stuff. Just never bothered.”

“Well mark my words, I’m gonna fix that.” Brooklyn pointed at Spencer’s bag. “If there’s not at least one team souvenir pin on that bag by the end of the year, I will have failed. No Drawkian should ever go through life without the joy of watching a ballgame.”

“Uh huh, sure.” Spencer cocked an eyebrow. “And it’ll be my goal to keep you from failing this class. If your backpack is anything to go by, it seems you’re gonna need all the help you can get.”

Brooklyn looked down at her bag. It was half open, showing its contents of a single binder, a couple notebooks, and what seemed to be a novel’s worth of loose sheets of paper haphazardly stuffed in between.

“I’m not an idiot,” Brooklyn snapped, trying to keep herself from blushing in embarrassment. Somehow it felt more offensive than if a teammate had said the same thing. After all, she could easily fire a similarly-themed comeback then, but clearly that wouldn’t work here. “I don’t need your help.”

“If you say so.” Spencer shrugged again. “Either way, our grades are gonna be tied together for everything except tests, and I’m not gonna let you be dead weight on my GPA. So you better believe I will be making you do your part.”

“How do you know about the grading? The teacher hasn’t even given out the syllabus yet.”

“Oh yeah?” Spencer slipped a small packet from his binder on the table. “I printed it off the website last week. You don’t do that?”

“Why would I do that?” Brooklyn scoffed. “I already throw the thing in the trash once I leave the first day of class.”

“Man, you are hopeless.” Spencer shook his head sadly. Brooklyn could not tell for the life of her if he was being sarcastic.

“Funny, I was gonna say the same thing,” Brooklyn started to say, but she was interrupted by Ms. Hardy looming directly above.

“Here’s the syllabus,” the teacher said, dropping a packet in front of Brooklyn. Spencer waved his syllabus in his hand, indicating that he didn’t need one. Ms. Hardy smiled. “Ah, Mr. Harrelson. Wonderful to have you in one of my classes again. Please take care of Ms. Beck for me, eh?” She moved on to the next table with a wink.

Brooklyn’s jaw dropped in indignation, but no words came out. Spencer turned slightly, a satisfied grin on his face.

“You heard her. Teacher’s orders.”

It seemed that Brooklyn had a strong contender for worst class of the year, and it wasn’t even lunch yet. It was gonna be a long year.
