The LGBT+ Thread: Rainbow Connections

Hi, gays. Well, not only gays, but bis and lesbians as well. And trans people too. And pans, and Enbies, and a bunch of other people that don't get special colours because I'm lazy. NSG has talked about us for a while. A long while. Even though I'm a newcomer to NS, I've seen a few... interesting comments that trace back all the way to 2009 about things like transgender people. But I've never seen a proper home for us, despite how popular we are in these hallowed threads. So, how about we make one? An open home to discuss topics in regards to every sexuality, romantic tendency, and gender identity under the sun, everything that is under the massive banner of the LGBTQ+ community. Any and all discussion is encouraged here. As a thread in NSG, this is not a safespace, so expect political, social and philosophical debate. Nevertheless, queer folk are free to post about their experiences with their non-normative sexualities or gender identities, be it positive or negative, as well as post about news and events that may be relevant.

Just so we're clear:

• This thread is a place for debate and discussion of topics relevant to the Queer community, and Sexual & Gender Minorities in general. It is also a place for the sharing of opinions, experiences and news regarding those groups.
• Standard site & forum rules apply, and that means: no trolling, no flaming, and no baiting. Think before you post, and always remember the handy guideline: if you have to ask, don't post it.
• Keep it nice and civil. Topics involving the Queer community can be a subject of a lot of pain and sensitivity to many people. Be considerate, and be polite. Respect people's wishes and do not deadname trans people.

Also, for the sake of being extremely clear, I'm going to copy & paste a useful list of behaviours that are not to be tolerated within this thread. It's taken directly from the Trans Thread.

Other behaviours that'll not be tolerated are [Prior thanks to Farn - Took the words out of my mouth or fingers as it were];

• Intentionally misgendering a person or individual after they have made it known to be referred to with their preferred personal pronoun.
• Referring to non-heterosexual persons as mentally ill or equating not being heterosexual as akin to being a paedophile.
• Discussions of religious prohibitions on non-heterosexual behaviour will be tolerated to the extent that they do not evolve into general discussions of religions or a particular religion. This is applied vice versa - Do not troll, flame, or bait members of the Religious community either.

I'll re-iterate the point presented in that quote about religion. It is okay to bring up your religion's disapproval for a certain sexuality or gender identity, but this is not the place for theological discussion, nor is it the place for proselytising. You are not encouraged to attempt to convince others that your religion is "right" on that, and neither are you encouraged to take up excessive space on the thread to discuss whether or not a certain religion allows a particular sexual or gender identity. Those two things can quickly devolve into flaming, and they will derail this thread, so don't do it. Pretty please

Huh, quite impressive. LGBTQIA+ is the most preferred one so far. I thought that NSG was more of a "Queer" place, but I guess I was wrong! Remember that suggestions for other names are always open and will be included in the poll.

Aye, quite. I welcome suggestions for improvement, the initial OP was just to get things off. If this thread actually sees significant usage I'll get on trying to make it more aesthetically pleasing, beyond just using pre-selected font colours from the editor.

Could be a good point of reference. Another suggestion would be to craft a list of resources for LGBT+ people at risk.

I'm a cishet female but I voted for the Queer Thread. Am I safe? (I've sometimes thought about how different my life would have been if I transitioned or dated my lady friend - spoiler alert, not by much... but, as I said, cishet. And, as I didn't say, damn privileged.)

I've posted about obviously false Twitter Blue rumours, the English police headcount, different types of skirt and the fact I'm an almost-180cm-tall mum of one with brown eyes in the Trans Thread and, miraculously, none of them were off-topic. A similar kind of strikerate for this thread would be fun! Or maybe not; I've had a clean record for 7.5yrs and it would be a shame to lose it now.

Pretty sure the previous thread just died. People kept trying to restart it but it didn't survive after same sex marriage became a thing in the us. There were occasional updates as other countries also recognizing same sex marriage but not much else.
