AWD means AWD.

Yes that’s correct.

And AWD cars can drift.

Here’s a few guys in an Impreza and a Lancer drifting.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2LPj9cGjJQ

You’ll note that even though both vehicles are AWD, the Impreza struggles more at drifting. It’s a super grippy car - even among AWD vehicles. But even so, both can drift.

To quote the best counterargument to this (beside the question of "what if you need to speed up to avoid a collision?"):

"I paid for the whole speedometer, I'm going to use the whole speedometer!"

Okay, then make the speedometer only go to 30 m/s.

Truck crosses the median and you try to change lanes and hit the gas to avoid collision.
Your car's computer

We've already had self-driving car fatalities, and Boeing's brand new autopilot famously flew twoplanes into the ground until they were banned from flying, so why in fuck's name would anyone trust remote-controlling vehicles?

Okay, make the limiter focus on acceleration instead of velocity, and if not very objected-to, perhaps the computer judging road conditions could be given algorithm to allow going over to avoid the truck?

Well somethings I like; adaptive cruise control is the best thing since sliced bread, and given an option I would never buy a car without it and blindspot monitoring. But as to a fully autonomous vehicle, I am with you.

I trust a computer not connected to any network over many drivers, but fully-automatic cars should have their own roads/lanes, or always have supervision.

Most cars already have a limiter, racers disable them.

The engine should not be capable of propelling the vehicle over 35 m/s relative to the road's surface.

Some roads have a higher speed limit than that, and racing is perfectly legal in the right circumstances. Racers often modify their engines, besides the fact making an engine not able to drive a car faster than that without an electronic limiter would be difficult to do, it still would not work because the racers would still work around it.

It would be unlikely to do much good.

But that wouldn't stop the vehicle as a police spike strip would; or perhaps you want it to be on all cars all the time which just goes to prove my concern that this kind of technology is more about expanding the 'nanny state' rather than stopping criminals. Also as Katganistan said, it could end up doing more harm than good.

Its not the 4 wheel drive thats the problem, its the vehicle stability code written into the car that stops you.

As per the topic, my uncle use to drag race down Flatbush Ave extension between the belt and the bridge.

It's wide, it's straight, and at times, mostly empty.

I'm not approving it, but I can see why. Nothing out there after what used to be Toys R Us but the driving range and Floyd Bennett Field.

Quite apart from anything else, turning a speeding car into a speeding car that just unexpectedly lost control does not seem like much of an improvement.

Street racing: morally wrong
Racing at a drag strip: morally ok

So do we want people who like to race to have the opportunity to do the morally ok thing, or leave them only the option of doing the morally wrong thing?

But if the same people who engage in illegal street racing now are the ones you expect to use it, haven't you rewarded criminality, and therefore caused more of it in the future?

As well, others have noted issues with properly insured private drag racing strips being expensive anyway.

Hence why you can see why a government funded or subsidized track is needed. There's an important societal need that the free market is not filling adequately, and this results in undesirable social results.
