Guide to Sports Roleplaying

Format
We have 36 teams for this tournament. For Phase 1 of this tournament, they will be divided into 3 leagues, via the following allocation.

League A: 3 groups of 4(Top 11 ranked sides plus host*)
League B: 3 groups of 4(Next 12 sides by ranking)
League C: 3 groups of 4(Next 12 sides)

Phase 1- Each team shall play a double round robin, home and away, in a group stage setting against all teams in their group. Each League will have a seeded draw. At the end of Phase 1, we relegate last team in each group from League A, and promote top team in each group from League B. Relegate bottom team in each group from League B, and promote top team in each group from League C. If 32 teams, only the two worst last place teams from League B get relegated.

Phase 2- With the new teams in each league, we draw new groups(with a seeded draw, once again), and go for it again. Each team shall play a double round robin, home and away, in a group stage setting against all teams in their group. At the end of Phase 2, 16 spots are allocated to the World Bowl knockout stages as follows.

- Top 3 teams in each group in League A Phase 2 will qualify directly for World Bowl knockout stages(9 teams)
- Group winners from each group in League B Phase 2 will qualify directly for World Bowl knockout stages(3 teams)
- The last place team in each group in League A shall play a home game against a group runner-up from League B. The matchups shall be randomly chosen. The winner of each game will qualify for the World Bowl knockout stages(3 teams)
- The group winners from League C Phase 2 will be ranked according to standings, and the top two of those three group winners will play in a neutral site game(in Banija), and the winner shall qualify for the knockout stages(1 team)

National Information

The Kingdom of Banija is a country that classifies itself as a semi-constitutional monarchy. A nation that is freshly a member of Atlantian Oceania, it is led by the Kabaka(which translates to King), and the current monarch is Kabaka Mwanga. The Kabaka, alongside with the Waziri(translates to Foreign Minister), whom he picks and dismisses solely at his pleasure, is the Head of State and responsible for the country's foreign affairs. Upon reaching age 25, the Isebantu(Crown Prince), becomes the Waziri by constitutional right.

Kabaka Mwanga ascended into power after the assasination of Kabaka Albert III during World Cup 82 Qualifying. This is, of course, a government with an elected element. The elected unicameral legislature is the Lukiiko(Parliament), and the Lukiiko is responsible for governance of domestic affairs. The Katikkiro(Prime Minister) is elected by the Lukiiko. Currently, the Social Democrats, Banija's most left-wing major party, has won the most recent elections, a strange notion for this traditionally conservative nation. Their biggest accomplishment to date is eliminating gender segregation laws in the country when it comes to collegiate and professional sports. The established church is the Puritan Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, most commonly known as Puritan Mormonism. Well over 90% of Banijans identify as adherents to the state church, though freedom of religion is generally respected by the law, and citizens are generally tolerant of the other Abrahamic religions(Christianity, Islam, and Judaism). However, if you are of a faith outside of that umbrella, you are likely to get looked down upon, and there is a strong anti-athiest sentiment among the population.

Due to the massive influence of Puritan Mormonism in this nation, they are relatively socially conservative. Abortion in this country is outlawed unless the mother's life is in danger, and polygamy for males is legal. The Church's official stance is against birth control, though its purchase and use is not illegal(though frowned upon). The church's Universal Call to Motherhood, which teaches that the destiny of each and every woman is to give birth to children and raise faithful Puritan Mormons, has heavily shaped the nation's view on the role of women in society, forming the basis for Banija's prior sports gender segregation laws in the first place, though those are no longer in place. Consumption of alcohol and the recreational use of marijuana in Banija is legal. Due to Mormon tradition, however, the purchase/sale of coffee products is illegal within Banija- however, the consumption is not. Fans and teams are allowed to bring in their own coffee products as long as they are declared at customs, where it is then taxed per pound upon import. The country's two official languages, of course, are Kasanke(the local vernacular language) and English.

Banija's currency is the shilling. The exchange rate to the NationStates Dollar is 1,000 shillings to 1 NSD. Conversion kiosks will be available at all hotels and at airports to exchange your money, as well as any banks. However, using the NSDs directly to purchase items is only guaranteed at stadiums and hotels- vendors outside of stadiums or hotels are not required to accept NationStates Dollars. Fans are also advised that street vendors will only take cash, according to Banijan law- as an issue of security to prevent against credit card theft.

Of course, Banija is a developing country by modern economic standards. However, due to a recent discovery of large oil deposits in Hangaza, there is hope that the country can use the new oil money to vault forward into first world nation status. A general lack of development in Banija, we are a country with excellent sporting infrastructure, but little else. Most roads are dirt, and public transit within cities is via the boda boda, and fans will be expected to use public transit. Though, of course, each of the 16 teams in Banija will have three 45 passenger busses to transport players, coaches, staff, family, etc... To and from the hotel to the games and practices. The climate of Banija has a lot of natural rainforest and jungle, which means that there is no winter, only wet season and dry season. Temperatures generally range at their coldest around 60 degrees farenheit, and at their hottest around 110 degrees farenheit. For the duration of the tournament, average high temperatures will range from 60 to 85 degrees farenheit.

Banijans have a tendency of being relaxed about time. While, of course, things like flights and matches will run on time, this is something that is observed generally, especially at restaurants. It is considered standard to arrive about 15-20 minutes late for a restaurant reservation, which is something Banijan authorities would like to make note of for travelling fans and visitors to the country for this tournament.

The three major international airports within Banija are Istria International, Jinja City International, and Busukuma International. These serve the country's two largest cities, and the nation's capitol. Jinja City's airport status was recently converted to international status after the discovery of oil within the Hangaza region. All the cities hosting games have their own airport, but teams/fans will have to fly in via the three international airports, and then take a connecting flight to their eventual destinations.

Locations

Istria, Moravica
Banija's largest port and largest city by population, this is in the Moravica region, in Northwestern Banija. It is a city of 3 million people, and it is known as Banija's economic capitol. It is largely considered Banija's most diverse city. Historically, this city served as the second capitol city of the Kasanke Tribe, the historical predecessors of the modern Banijan nation. It is one of two Banijan cities with a major foreign population- the other being the nation's capitol, Busukuma. There is even a Kalactanian Hockey League team hosted in the city. Nearly a third of the city holds citizenship of a country other than Banijan. More of those come from the Royal Kingdom of Quebec or the Busoga Islands, but people come from all over Atlantian Oceania and the rest of the multiverse. It is also known as Banija's wealthiest city and primary economic hub. It is home to Banija's oldest university, the University of Loyola-Istria, and to the country's biggest airport.

Stadium
Image

The stadium in Istria is Liberty Stadium, with a capacity of 70,000. This stadium is the largest domed stadium in the country, and one of just six stadiums in the country that has a capacity of at least 70,000. This stadium is best known as the home stadium of the Istria Black Mambas in the Banijan Gridiron Football League, but has also hosted many international events. It hosted games during World Bowl XXXVII, and it also hosted the NSCF 12 and NSCF 14 championship games.

Herzegovina City, Moravica
Banija's oldest city, the city by its current name is over 800 years old, when it was first conquered by the Kasanke people. It is a city with a population of 1 million people. It is the heart of the Puritan Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The national religion was started in this city, and the church's world headquarters, the Herzegovina Temple, is the multiverse's largest Puritan Mormon church. The Bishop of this church, formally titled the Patriarch of Herzegovina, is the most senior member of the church, and the joint head of the global church, alongside His Majesty, the Kabaka. It is home to Banija's largest university, Northern Moravica University. It served as the seat of government for the Kasanke Tribe. It is also the capitol city of the Moravica region. As the original home of the predecessors of the Banijan monarchs, all reigning monarchs are buried on the grounds of the Herzegovina Temple.

To get to Herzegovina City directly from abroad, you will fly into Banija via Istria, and then take a 50 minute high speed train ride North to Herzegovina City.

Stadium- Mugisha II Memorial Stadium
Image

This stadium in Herzegovina City is Mugisha II Memorial Stadium, home of the NSCF 19 champions and NSCF XX runner-ups, the Northern Moravica University Cougars. This is the only college football stadium being used in this tournament. It is the third largest stadium in the country, with a capacity of 87,000. Northern Moravica University, of course, has changed campus rules for the day of the game to allow alcohol to be bought and sold inside this college football stadium.

Busukuma, National Capitol Region
This is the nation's capitol, located on the country's Southern coastline. Puritan Mormons believe that their God told the-then chief of the Kasanke, Kabonero III, that he should conquer all of the land that is currently Banija, gave the country it's name(therefore killing the name of the Kasanke nation), and put the capitol in the South. He did it, made Busukuma the capitol, and declared himself Banija's first Maharaja, or Emperor. As the nation's capitol for over 400 years, the city has been the spot for many major events in Banijan history, and the seat of plenty of foreign embassies, a large foreign population, and Banija's first airport.

The city, of course, is known for having two airports- the public, international airport, called Busukuma International, and also the non-public airport, named Gonzaga International Airport- reserved for the royal family and their guests, elected national politicians, foreign diplomats, and the point of entry for high-ranking officials to avoid the general public. Heads of State/Government, Foreign Ministers, AOCAF officials, host committee members, and national teams, upon their first arrival into Banija, will fly into Gonzaga International.

Stadium of the Restoration
Image

The national stadium, the Stadium of the Restoration, sits 91,835. It is the country's largest soccer stadium, second largest stadium in general, and, of course, it is the national stadium. On the stadium's site, in 1835, the Banijan monarchy was restored at this site in Banija's first declaration of independence from the Royal Kingdom of Quebec. When the RBSA was formed, it was the obvious site to build the national stadium. The original facility sat 69,000, and hosted the World Bowl XXXIV Final. It was home to the Banijan national soccer and gridiron teams, and hosted plenty of international tournaments, including the Finals of a UICA Globe Cup, World Bowl and a Baptism of Fire. However, the ageing facility needed to be rebuilt so that one could fit the WCC's 80,000 seater minimum requirement to host a World Cup opening match, as required when the country co-hosted World Cup 81.

The bid from AEP, an architectural firm from Siovanija & Teusland, won the bid to build a new Stadium of the Restoration on the same site in time for World Cup 81. The brand new stadium's capacity, according to the bid, is a nod to Banija's history, of the year that made the site famous in 1835. It has a retractable natural grass surface, used for soccer, and a retractable articifial turf surface, used for gridiron football and during ceremonies like coronations. There are no gaps between the stands, while the South Stand is a single tier, designed to amplify crowd noise. The stadium contains 35 suites, 1 of which is always reserved for RBSA executives, and the second always received for His Majesty, the Kabaka.

Since the rebuild, of course, it hosted both the opening match and one of the semifinals of World Cup 81, the final of AOCAF LVIII, as well as the coronation ceremony of Kabaka Mwanga.

Sun Valley Stadium

This stadium is the home of the Busukuma Suns in the Banijan Gridiron Football League. It has a capacity of 53,000. Busukuma, of course, is the only city in the country that has two stadiums that have been picked to host games at this tournament.

Jinja City, Hangaza
This city of 2 million people is Banija's largest inland city, and the second largest city in the entire country, in terms of population. This city is the economic center of the Hangaza region, even if its political capitol lies towards the East, in Aissa. Being an inland city, of course, it is not know for its diversity- nearly the entire city are native Banijans, even if many are from rural Hangaza. Historically, the city is known for being the spiritual home of one of Banija's minority ethnic groups- the Akamba. It is also sight of the first battle of the Kasanke conquest, when they moved from the Moravican coast to take over the entirety of what is now Banija.

Stadium- BCEL Stadium
Image

This stadium has a capacity of 52,400. Sponsored by the soft drink company BCEL from Baker Park, it is the largest corporate sponsored stadium in Banija. It is a stadium that is jointly owned by Jinja City Football Club of the Banijan Soccer League, and the Jinja City Springboks of the Banijan Gridiron Football League.

Lwanga, Buganda
Citizens of Lwanga, Buganda are excited for this moment- this is the first time that the City of Lwanga has been chosen to host a major tournament match, and locals are excited. Lwanga is the capitol of the Buganda region- a city with 646,000 within its city limits. And yet, like Aissa, this Southeastern city does not have the easiest access. To get there directly, you fly into Busukuma International Airport, and then fly to Lwanga. But the highways in Buganda are known for being poor, and it is generally known as the region with the weakest freeway network not only in the country, but throughout the GSW(though, of course, this does not count places like Valanora where citizenry doesn't drive at all).

The city is famous for being host to the remains of the House of Mageba, rulers of Banija from 1618 to 1815.

Stadium- The Watering Hole
Image

This stadium is home to the Lwanga Rhinos, in the Banijan Gridiron Football League. With a capacity of 63,000, it is one of Banija's few domed stadiums. Why a dome in a country without winter? Buganda is known for having lots of wind- and when the option to put a roof on the building came up, all the stakeholders jumped onto it.

Aissa, Hangaza
As mentioned above, there was a lot of debate over the last four stadiums that would be picked. Which ones would they be? With legitimately competitive bids from 7 different stadiums to be in that final group of four, of course, there were bound to be disappointed cities and regions. The Hangaza region, of course, is not one of them. The region, dominated economically by its economic core in Jinja City, will provide a second host city, in its regional capitol, Aissa. A city of 477,000, it is nothing remarkable on its own. This is a notoriously difficult city to access, just a few miles from the country's eastern border with Geisenfred. It is a one hour bus ride from Jinja City.

Stadium- The Crocodile Swamp
Image

The Crocodile Swamp is home to the Aissa Crocodiles of the Banijan Gridiron Football League. The city's fans are known for being rabid and fierce, and fan culture in Aissa is known for being quite rowdy. The stadium was chosen for its stadium capacity, and nothing else- it is a great stadium, but its location, all the way out in little Aissa, made it seem as if the stadium was unlikely to get chosen. It is, certainly, the stadium that is most likely to have overzealous, drunken fans.

Dodoma, Bunyoro
The Bunyoro Region got a rude awakening with Bwubanza City Soccer Club's recent relegation, in stunning fashion, from the Banijan Soccer League. Previously seen as a lock to host World Cup matches, that relegation threw it all into doubt. Would Bwubanza City's revenues fall enough to prevent them from making the necessary upgrades to host World Cup football? There was, of course, the other city in the region to consider- Dodoma, a city with almost 800,000. Locals joke that while in the rest of Banija, there is dry season and wet season, in Bunyoro, there is wet and wetter season- it has some of the highest rates of rainfall in all of Atlantian Oceania.

But where to put the matches? The existing stadium in the city isn't big enough, with a capacity of 33,000. Then, of course...

Stadium- Albert III Stadium
Image

This was built for World Cup 81 under a different name, and is currently used by Bunyoro RSC. However, after the assassination of the Kabaka's father, Albert III, it was renamed after him. It debuted under this name at the AOCAF LVIII tournament, and, of course, be home of Bunyoro Regional Sporting Club in both gridiron football and in soccer. With a stadium capacity of 48,600, and with revolutionary field drainage technology, thoughtful considering the amount of rain that this region gets, this will be some of Banijan engineering technology on full display. Due to the unique structure of the roof, the sound is made to go down onto the ground, and many expect this will be the tournament's loudest venue due to that stadium design.

Hoima, Ankole
Now, while Hoima wasn't a shoe-in per say, it was never really going to be left off of the host list, was it? One of five cities in Banija with at least a million people, it had to be chosen. It is not a multicultural city, as is true of most of Banija's inland cities, but it is more diverse than Jinja City. Banija Air is headquartered in this city, as the city's economy relies on commercial airliner manufacturing. The weather in this city is known as some of the best in Banija- almost always temperate, and not much humidity. Of course, there is alittude, as the city is located three quarters of a mile above see level.

Stadium- Mavuto Field
Image

This is a brand new stadium, built on the same site as the former PG Arena. It was built in order to host games in AOCAF LVIII. With a combined investment from the Ankole Regional Government, the Hoima Warriors, and the City of Hoima, this is a behemoth of a stadium- seating a stunning 75,000, becoming the largest stadium in both the BSL and the BGFL. It is home to both the Hoima Warriors of the Banijan Soccer League, and the Hoima Zebra of the Banijan Gridiron Football League. It is named after Gerald Mavuto, the city's first ever mayor.

Trust me, we have a more adult product for our football inspired by Wrestling. Think the XFL of 2001, except actually popular.

Cosumar National Gridiron Football Team
World Bowl XXXVII

Basic Information

Nation: The Fiefdom of Cosumar

Demonym: Cosumarite

Nickname: Azure Dragons

Home Field: The Xanadu Dome, Pelethas, Morponte Fief (capacity 94,000 for gridiron)

Debut: Baptism of Iron VI (3rd place) & World Bowl XI

Ranking: 5th

World Bowl XXXIV: 1st in Group B (9-1), eliminated by The Greater Nordics in Round of 16

Style Modifier: Moderately Offensive (+3)

Football in Cosumar: Football, primarily known here as Gridiron Football (varying by region), is the second-most popular spectator sport behind only Association Football (soccer). The Cosumar Football League (CFL) commands a strong Fiefdomwide following. The most recent season's results can be found here. Cosumar's World Bowl team is a collection of All-Stars from the CFL and occasionally a standout or two from foreign leagues. Cosumar also boasts two of the most prominent college football programs in the world: Ramusok Capital University and Stoneshore College. RCU and Stoneshore have both won the NationStates College Football (NSCF) championship, the former three times. As such, many of Cosumar's World Bowl players have prior experience in NSCF. For example, RCU quarterback Brandon Reigner was drafted into the CFL by the Emerald Cove Conquistadors and has become a multiple-time-MVP caliber QB there, landing him on the National Team for World Bowls. As previously mentioned, gridiron is quite popular at collegiate, professional, AND international levels.

Coaching Staff

Head Coach: Kirk Keathley (52)

Assistant Head Coach: Phillip Jennings (60)

Offensive Coordinator: Brandon Reigner (41)

Defensive Coordinator: Lars Björklund (58)

Special Teams Coordinator: Dawn Stone (42)

Offensive Team Captain: Francis Hibbert (QB)

Defensive Team Captain: Toby Tancredi (DE)

Roster
Starters in bold
Name - Age - CFL Team

QUARTERBACK
Francis Hibbert - 38 - Samotath Scourge
Perikomen Fothergill - 26 - Hvalsey Lions
Ra'ef Nimmo-Dirksen - 32 - Na'Ilee Venom

New head coach Kirk Keathley has called in an entirely new group of quarterbacks, longtime mainstays like Jeston Boulware and Brandon Reigner finally fading into retirement, or - in Reigner's case - the offensive coordinator position. Francis Hibbert is the elder statesman of the group, a career late-bloomer coming off an MVP season in Samotath after spending his 20s in the arena league. Behind him are Peri Fothergill, an undersized yet scrappy leader with a machine gun-precision throw who just won the Dragon Bowl, and Ra'ef Nimmo-Dirksen, a prototypical dual-threat scrambler who has won Offensive Player of the Year multiple times. There will be open competition for the starting job, so expect Keathley to make a change if things aren't going well.

BACKFIELD
RB Morum Øygard - 30 - Hvalsey Lions
RB Nicolas Perrantes - 32 - Dawchire Eagles
RB Jürgen Al-Abideen - 25 - Samaj Spartans

FB Remy Luukkainen - 28 - Centus Owls

Morum Øygard is the starter, a complete back with an all-around game and excellent vision and intelligence reading the running lanes. Now a Dragon Bowl champion, his career has definitely lived up to the initial promise after he stormed the league to steal Offensive Rookie of the Year as a 5th Round pick. Last edition's starter Nic Perrantes is a shifty back who is still a nightmare to deal with in space (under a limited carry load due to his ACL injury history). Those two will alternate for a majority of the carries. At fullback, Coach Keathley has called in Remy Luukkainen from the Owls, another first-time national team player but one with Dragon Bowl experience.

TIGHT END
Mati Jalonen - 29 - Helfin Mighty Men
Lucas Castillo - 35 - Bayford Blue Dragons
Kirum Kohntoeppel - 24 - Sundsvall Penguins

With longtime TE Kashmir Morrow finally retired and the likes of Lucas Castillo and Justus Bod getting up there in age as well, Mati Jalonen is now the unquestioned first-choice tight end after his best statistical season yet for Helfin. He has soft hands, elite blocking and excellent space-creation in the middle. Castillo is a consistent, experienced performer behind him who has won a Dragon Bowl. Kirum Kohntoeppel represents the next generation of tight ends that hasn't quite stepped up at the CFL level yet. He's here to watch and learn and gain experience. He has extraordinary physical tools that are useful in the red zone but isn't a reliable blocker yet.

WIDE RECEIVER
Thos Na'Basi - 26 - Hagenheim Vagabongs
Madison Weeldreyer - 30 - Samotath Scourge

Piet Talaat - 28 - Pelethas Thunder
Corns Na'Domha - 28 - Dawchire Eagles
Hernán Marquez - 25 - Jotungard Goblins

Cosumar will feature a similar receiving corps as World Bowl 36, with Hernán Marquez replacing the older Thomen Kuyengall. Thos Na'Basi still starts out wide, a former CFL Offensive Player of the Year and prototypical possession receiver: brilliant route-runner and space-creator, with great hands and physicality. On the other side, Madison Weeldreyer is the blazing fast 6"4 deep threat a la Kuyengall with the faster 40-yard-dash on the team. Squirrely small receiver Piet Talaat, known for his quick acceleration and elusive cuts in tight spaces, will line up in the slot, where he has a good rapport killing defenses by a thousand cuts. Dawchire star Corns Na'Domha is a like-for-like back-up for Na'Basi, but is a step slower (although he has a higher leap and better physicality). Marquez is a utility receiver who can do a little bit of everything.

OFFENSIVE LINE
LT Gregory Votto - 28 - Ramusok Stars
LT Stiliyan Na'Moute - 27 - Olask Dolphins

LG Arald Filipovic - 26 - Centus Owls
LG Harmon St. Clair - 32 - Sarmon Spirit

C Alceste Dechaumount - 29 - Olask Dolphins
C Nick Sceviour - 27 - Hvalsey Lions

RG Merlin Gunn - 28 - Crawford Comrades
RG Jakk Trice - 30 - Emerald Cove Conquistadors

RT Codal Kouyate - 33 - Opjenheim Bulldogs
RT Söngvar Gullmarstam - 28 - Flen Jaguars

This offensive line group has been very stable over the last few cycles. Starting tackles Kouyate and Votto have powered Cosumar's offense since World Bowl 33. Gregory Votto has earned All-CFL First Team honors seven years in a row out of Stoneshore College, a stellar pass protector with nimble feet under his huge muscular frame. Codal Kouyate, once his rival in NSCF with RCU, has had a similarly impressive career. Kouyate is known for his unbelievable hands. Iron grip - once he has hold of a defender under the chest pads, they're at his mercy. If there's a weakness, it's the interior line. Both centers are big boys that plug space better than anyone, but are vulnerable to extremely athletic pass-rushing nose tackles. Guards Filipovic and Gunn are solid - especially Gunn - but not world-class players like Votto and Kouyate on the outside.

DEFENSIVE TACKLE
Kol Chessmore - 28 - Na'Ilee Venom
Lothar Grunstein - 32 - Bayford Blue Dragons

Vaber Dandurand - 32 - Sarmon Spirit
Ofi Mondragon - 28 - Olask Dolphins

Grunstein is the prototypical GIANT nose tackle, a massive body there simply to clog up the running lanes. He stops the inside running game dead in its tracks - instrumental for Bayford's Dragon Bowl victory a couple years ago as well as for the national team. He doesn't do much else, but Lothar performs that one task very well at nearly 400 lbs. Chessmore offers a bit more a finesse, pass-rushing approach in the middle and will slide in beside Grunstein when Cosumar goes 4-3 (which is most plays). Dandurand is in a similar mold of more modern, pass-rushing DTs who can also play DE, but he isn't quite as explosive as Chessmore anymore. Ofi Mondragon is somewhere between Grunstein and Chessmore. He's a big, wide dude who can clog the running lanes, but offers a little more mobility than a behemoth like Grunstein and will actually get into the backfield sometimes - though not near as much as a sack specialist like Chessmore.

DEFENSIVE END
LE Connell Rapoport - 31 - Winnipeg Raiders Image
LE Toby Tancredi - 35 - Dawchire Eagles
LE Filip Stellar - 27 - Helfin Mighty Men

RE Colin Trindal - 26 - Samotath Scourge
RE Melvin MacDiarmid - 31 - Cassandra Wildcats
RE Goran Kravikovic - 27 - Hagenheim Vagabonds

Rapoport is a long time starter still at the peak of his powers, a freakish athlete who overwhelms offensive linemen with his speed, power and relentless motor. On the other side, new starter Colin Trindal has emerged as a force for Samotath with his array of well-crafted pass-rushing moves. Although not quite the athlete Rapoport is, Trindal's technique is immaculate. Former starters Melvin MacDiarmid and Toby Tancredi stick around as a valuable rotation options too, still racking up double-digit sacks in the CFL (twelve consecutive seasons of such for captain Tancredi). Kravikovic is a decent option with a great motor who will get some snaps as well. Stellar is serviceable at the international level, but not on the same tier as the other five.

LINEBACKERS
LOLB Azrael Stainthorpe - 26 - Sarmon Spirit
LOLB Quin Wooton - 32 - Morponte Marauders

MLB Thorin Cherufin - 29 - Samaj Spartans
MLB Conrad Jakubisin - 26 - Zakhoro Wolfpack

ROLB Cygnus Cason - 31 - Na'Ilee Venom
ROLB Hrafnkell Kvandervelden - 25 - Versiaville Vikings

Thorin Cherufin had the best season of any linebacker in Cosumarite history two years ago, willing the Samaj Spartans to a Dragon Bowl title. He's an absolute beast in the middle of the defense, covering tons of ground and displaying admirable leadership and organizational abilities. He has surpassed the iconic Cygnus Cason as the bona-fide star of the Cosumarite defense. After being broken in as an extremely young starter way back in World Bowl 30, Cygnus Cason embraced the limelight and has led the linebacking corps by example ever since. His play-reading instincts are second to none on the roster, although his closing speed is starting to slide a little. Azrael Stainthorpe is a physical presence on the weak side who hungers for contact like few others. He's a sure tackler and racks up a lot of them with his relentless pursuit, but isn't quite the playmaker that Cherufin or Cason are. Mason may rotate all the linebackers quite a bit, since Wooton, Jakubisin and Kvandervelden are all excellent players as well who offer unique skillsets.

CORNERBACK
Iain O'Somni - 28 - Opjenheim Bulldogs
Alex Na'Tomis - 29 - Olask Dolphisn

Lark Bowman - 28 - Centus Owls
Kumaran Na'Taneh - 26 - Emerald Cove Conquistadors
Landry Coventry - 27 - Hagenheim Vagabonds

1014 CFL DPoY Na'Tomis is the centerpiece of an Olask Dolphins secondary that has consistently been the best unit in the league, possessing all the smarts, speed and savvy you want in a corner. And that says a lot since fellow all-star Hedley Shrewton is also on the Dolphins. Although the experienced Shrewton will miss this World Bowl, it's made up for by Iain O'Somni on the other side, who last season emerged as the best interception artist in the league with 8 in the regular season. Lark Bowman is a tall, wiry corner (6"5), with springy legs built for outjumping receivers. Don't even try to throw in his direction on jump-ball. A crop of young corners including Na'Taneh and Coventry is pressing hard behind them. One of Cosumar's strongest position groups.

SAFETY
SS - Kanata Botiejonas - 32 - Helfin Mighty Men
SS - Marco Emiliano - 27 - Dawchire Eagles

FS - Gilan Nairn - 28 - Azuris Anthrax
FS - Mohammad Mussic - 24 - Samotath Scourge

Complete turnover in the deep secondary last cycle paid divdends, as safety has now become one of Cosumar's strongest positions. Same group will return from World Bowl 36. Mohammad Mussic walked into Samotath's starting lineup as a rookie and instantly made them a playoff team, after all. Maybe he can have a similar effect here. If he actually gets playing time, that is. Azuris Anthrax may have had a bad year, but you'd still be hard-pressed to find a more talented safety than Gilan Nairn anywhere in the world. Kanata Botiejonas is one of the most seasoned and reliable safeties in the CFL and deserves this second chance at the international level after a stellar nine-year career to-date in Helfin and getting injured at the beginning of the last World Bowl. Behind him, Marco Emiliano is a feisty, scrappy safety who doesn't mind mixing it up with bigger players. This tenacity serves him well, but also makes him a penalty risk.

SPECIAL TEAMS
K Alan Highsmith - 30 - Mallox Iron Tigers
K Latep Na'At - 34 - OAS Kingsmen

P Keevu Schavinski - 72 - Ramusok Stars
P Æðelbeorht Baardsson - 36 - Morponte Marauders

KR Madison Weeldreyer (WR, 30, Samotath Scourge)
PR Nic Perrantes (RB, 32, Dawchire Eagles)

Alan Highsmith is as consistent as they come, the most accurate kicker in CFL history through his five seasons in the league. Keevu Schavinksi, Ramusok's 70-year-old punter, remains one of the more remarkable stories in all of Gridiron. He's by far the longest-serving member of the National Team and still boots balls downfield like he did 50 years ago. How his unorthodox diet and legendary training regimen keeps him hardy at an advanced age is the subject of much speculation and curiosity year-in, year-out. Conspiracy theory has it that he might have some type of cyborg component or mechanical enhancement.

Nation name in Polish: Rzeczpospolita Polnocna
Nation Name in English Republic of Northern Land

Trigramme:
Demonym: Septentrional (plural: Septentrionaux)
Nicknames: Nordiques, Reprezentacja Nordycki, Northmen
Team colors: Green, white and red
Style Mod: -3

Offensive formations: (in order of frequency)
Standard Shotgun: 3 WR and 2 HB (this formation is weak against pass rushing cuz no FB or TE for blocking)
Pro formation: 2 WR, 1 TE and 2 HB
Shotgun 3: 3 WR, 1 TE and 1 HB
Single back: 3 WR, 1 TE and 1 HB
Wildcat: 1 WR, 2 TE and 2 HB (with a HB and a QB lining as WRs and another HB getting the snap)
Shotgun 4: 4 WR and 1 HB
T formation (short yardage): 2 TE, 2 HB and 1 FB
Goal line: 3 TE, 1 HB and 1 FB (sometimes a DT can be used as FB in this formation)

Defensive formations:
Standard: 3-4-4
nickel 3-3-5
dime 2-3-6
goal line: 5-4-2 (2 DE, 3 DT/NT, 2 OLB, 2 MLB and 2 CB)
heavy: 6-5-0 (2 DE, 4 DT/NT, 2 OLB and 3 MLB)

When RPing you need to be logic. I won't use a dime formation against the Allamunic States and I won't use a goal line or heavy formation against a team who use 3 or 4 WRs.

We're making our World Bowl debut

Demons are given similar uniforms that monitor their stress level for several safety reasons.

Notes on Style of Play

The Flexbone is an offense that is built around athletic quarterbacks who can run and pass. If a quarterback is injured, a new one will step in and will run a similar style of offense. Triple options are a significant part of the offense but the slotbacks are very capable pass receivers and the fullback is a capable inside runner. There is also a variant of the Flexbone that utilizes a tight end. In this variant, one of the slotbacks moves out to the wing to become a wingback. While they will run the ball around two thirds of the time, passing plays can be extremely effective in this offense and they will go after the opposing defense with pass plays if they focus too heavily on stopping the run.

The Republican version of the 46 defense relies heavily on pressure and pre-snap movement. The strong safety in this defense is more comparable to a linebacker. The aim of this defense is to shut down the run and force the opposing QB to throw quickly. Against spread formations, they will drop extra men into coverage. While the linebackers will have trouble covering fast wide receivers man-to-man, they are fast enough to hang with a possession receiver. To play for the Republican National Team, defenders have to be fast regardless of position and they have to be looking to force turnovers at every opportunity.

World Bowl XXXVII: The Schedule

At a point in the year where Ko-orenite sports fans are waiting for next season's schedule to drop, there is always some extra interest in the intricacies of schedule-making. Newspapers, magazines and sports blogs all devote some pages to the mathematicians tasked with creating next year's schedule. Meticulously making sure that the so-and-so event in such-and-such town doesn't collide with a home game there. Making sure that a team doesn't get three away games in a row. Making sure that the derbies are evenly spaced so there's interest for them all season long. Variables, variables, and when there's finally a good schedule, redoing it all because the chief of police of such-and-such town thinks the festival in the next town over will require police from their town, and there's not enough staff to cover both events.

The only other things you can do in summer are to follow cricket or baseball, but that's not to everyone's liking. At least fans of the other sports can spend a few weeks in the off-season ranting about the new schedule, or explaining how this schedule will make champions of their team.

However, even that fun is taken away from gridiron fans. The KGFL is pretty much the only league with a set-in-stone schedule that remains the same, year in, year out. In September, the 36th week of the year to be more precise, will be round one. There will be six divisional games in that week. We already know that weeks 38 and 39 consist of twelve games total, played in smaller towns in the heartland of that team's fanbase. Week 41 is a bye week. The first rivalry games are played in week 48. The return rivalry games are spread out across weeks 51 and 52. Every single year. The only things that change are which games are played in the other weeks. Week one is a divisional round - but that leaves four potential opponents for each team (six teams in a division, minus one because you can't play yourself, minus one because you can't play your rival). We already know when the divisional rounds are (Rounds 1, 2, 6, 7, 12, 13, 16, and half of rounds 14 and 15), so that is the one variable left to complete for the schedule maker.

Until now.

Normally, the World Bowl follows more or less the same format. Even in the World Bowl hosted in Ko-oren, where the location was a wildcard, the format was the same as always. While the KFA (soccer association) loves its odd formats, the KGFA (gridiron football association) is much more conservative. This year, they are forced to accept something new. And it has already won over the hearts of many Ko-orenites. Welcome to the multi-phase World Bowl.

As a top 12 team, our first six games are against other top-ranked teams. We play Cosumar twice, as retribution for the Di Bradini Cup. We play Newmanistan twice, to see how we match up when we're not in the World Baseball Classic for a change. We play Pridnestrovia twice, because what else would we do if we're not in a group with the top ranked team in the world. That would get boring, right? Also, we start off with two away games and finish with two home games. As a slow starter, this only benefits the Dragonflies.

After that, if we finish top 3 in our group, we stay in the top 12 nations for the time being. If we finish 4th, last, in our group, we relegate to the next best 12 nations. Then we repeat the process: there are new, seeded, groups, and then there are six more games. That means that no matter what, we will get 12 games against the teams closest to our strength, a higher chance of playing our rivals and other high-profile teams.

After 12 games, if we are in the top 3 of the best 12, we qualify.
If we are first in a 'next best 12' group, we qualify.
If we are fourth in the best 12, or second in the next best 12, we play a playoff. We win that, we qualify.
One more team qualifies, but that does not apply to us. We cannot drop to the bottom batch.

Bottom batch. I'm keeping that.

Stay with us for this World Bowl, it'll be a good one. We have no idea how the world ranking is affected by this format, but let's face it, we've never looked at the world rankings in any sport, other than to determine what pot we're in.

Head Coach: Alastair Jobs. 68 years old. The head coach at the University of Loyola-Istria for 20 seasons, until hired to the national team by Daniachew. Daniachew himself coached Banija in 4 World Bowls, and went to the semifinals in World Bowl 29, World Bowl 30, and World Bowl 31. The legend was made head of the Banijan Gridiron Football Association, and hired Alastair Jobs to coach the national team. He coached Loyola-Istria to the NSCF 14 and NSCF 17 championships. This is his third cycle at the helm. As Banija is coming off of a minor miracle of a third place finish at World Bowl XXXVI, they will look to build on that success and make a run on home soil(assuming, of course, they qualify for the knockout stages on home soil, since they could not even do that in World Bowl XXXIV.)

Offensive Coordinator & Assistant Head Coach: Jeremiah Johnson, 61 years old. HE is a great offensive coordinator for Alastair Jobs, who is looking to run a pass happy spread offense system. A firm believer in the system, the team almsot rarely lines up under center- somewhere between 80 and 85% of their snaps are taken from either the pistol or shotgun formation. While he's added some run-option and RPO concepts to the offense, especially out of the pistol, the core of this offense remains the same- spread em out and attack the defense.

Other notable Offensive Staff: Former NSCF 14 and NSCF 17 champion, Loyola running back Justice Greenspan is the running backs coach. he is 34 years old.

Defensive Coordinator: Techomir Sendula. 46 years old. Played outside linebacker during his career. NSCF 12 starter for Northern Moravica; Starter for World Bowls 29-31 and 34; second string linebacker for World Bowl 35. He was brought onside by Alastair Jobs for the position after firing his World Bowl XXXV defensive coordinator. While this is his first ever coaching job, his depth of playing experience is seen as a major asset for this team, and while there are expected to be growing pains on the defensive side of the ball, he is certainly expected to improve throughout the tournament.

Other notable defensive staff: Former NSCF 14 champion and World Bowl XXXVI defensive captain David Franklin is the linebackers coach. He is 41 years old.

Special Teams Coordinator/Strength & Conditioning Coach: Iyoas Motuma. 37 years old.

NEWMANISTAN ROCKETS

WORLD BOWL 37 ROSTER

"Proudly underachieving since World Bowl I"

Starters (Offense) (Standard Formation, Multiple Formations will actually be used)
QB- #15- Donovan Williams, 28, North Charlotte Wildcats (First Time Starter)
HB- #32- Kevin Bellemore, 26, Nashua Broncos (First Time Starter) (about 60% of the carries)
FB- #48- Jimmie Gordon, 37, Daytopia Racers
WR- #83- Kevin Ambroziak, 32, Putnam Lake Eagles (Offensive Captain)
WR- #87- Drew Oliveras, 28, Pocono City Capitals
TE- #86- Clyde Sanders, 27, South Charlotte Condors
LT- #68- Mark Jones, 32, Silver Lake Seagulls (First Time Starter)
LG- #65- Byron Vanetti, 22, Centralia Cougars (First Time Starter)
C- #69- Kyle Cross, 24, Loudon Leopards (First Time on Team)
RG- #66- Mitch Gregson, 23, Dover City Mountaineers (First Time on Team)
RT- #63- Michael Janssen, 29, Southport Tigers

About the offense:
The time that passed between World Bowl 36 and 37 was not friendly for our team. Many players were in their lower 30's, including former starting QB Alex Nelligan. While several of those players are still active in the ENFL (Empire of Newmanistan Football League), their play is not what it used to be. Not only do we have a first time starting QB and RB, four-fifths of our offensive line is new. Those who moved on had great chemistry with one another, so hopefully that can be built with this unit. The QB, Williams, is a scrambler, so coach Dineen is hopeful that if the new line does break down, that Williams can run himself out of trouble more often then not.

Starters (Defense) (The Rockets Generally Use a 4-3 Base)
DE- #95- Lavion Santiago, 31, Putnam Lake Eagles
DE- #91- Keith Koening, 32, Tundra Falls Mariners

CB: #37- Darius Blanchard, 24, Southport Tigers (First Time Starter)
CB: #25- Peter Benninger, 26, Tundra Falls Mariners (First Time Starter)

About The Defense:
While the turnover is not as extreme on defense, there are some important people missing. CB Taeshawn Gilles, our defensive MVP in each of the last three World Bowls is no longer part of the squad as he is now 35, and father time has been catching up to him. He still plays in the ENFL, but not at the level he used too. MLB Paul Helmer, the defensive captain is also no longer on the team as, at 37, he has retired from football. Other starters who are in their lower 30's were all on the team since our runner up performance in World Bowl 34, and will be asked to have extra leadership roles now.

THE ROCKET REPORT

INEXPERIENCED ROSTER FACES TOUGH CHALLENGE

by Brianne Henry,

With World Bowl 37 just around the corner, the official roster for the competition has just been announced, and it features a lot of turnover. This is not a surprise, given that the average age of our team has been climbing and climbing. Eventually, they would not all be able to maintain their high level of play. It just would have been good if it did not have to happen all at once. The last time we saw a Newmanistanian roster have so much turnover was between World Baseball Classics 44 and 45. Despite that turnover, the team still managed to find their way to the championship series, and were one game away from winning the World Baseball Classic 45 championship. Sadly, they crapped out in the first round this year.

The biggest changes for this team are on offense where new QB Donovan Williams will be behind an offensive line that has four new starters on it. While we know that the lineman, as well as Williams, are successful as individuals, and the systems that their individual teams employ, it is a group that is not used to playing together, and is not used to Williams. Natually, expect coach Marvin Dineen to prioritize chemistry amongst them during the practices that lead up to the opening game. They are professionals, so I think they will learn quick. As fans, we are just used to the comfort level of the familiar names that this line used to have.

In a traditional tournament, they would have games against weaker teams to come together, but this tournament is anything but ordinary. If you were expecting something typical, you’ll want to pay extra attention as I explain the format. The host nation, which is Banija, placed the top eleven ranked teams, as well as themselves into what is referenced as “League A”. The next twelve teams were placed into “League B”, and everyone else dumped into “League C.” We will be in League A, and within it, we will play a double round robin against three other successful nations: top ranked Pridnestrovia, Cosumar, and Ko-oren. The last place team in each of the groups is relegated into “League B”, and the first place team from “B” is promoted into “A”. A similar process takes place between “B” and “C”, and we now complete what is known as Phase 1.

Next comes Phase 2, and for it, all the groups are redrawn, so we don’t know who Newmanistan would be playing during this phase. Hopefully, it could be against more League A opposition, but it’s not really the end of the world if you do get relegated to League B. Teams that do get relegated will become the top seeds of the new draw, so should then become the favorites to win their groups. League B group winners qualify automatically into the playoffs, with the top three teams in League A making it through. Last place teams from League A then play a randomly determined runner up from League B. One team from League C will also qualify, but that path will not concern us. Many nations, Newmanistan included, expressed excitement about the new format when the bid was announced and were eager to give it a shot. I asked some people what they think of this format:

Marvin Dineen (coach): “The format means you need to be ready to go, right away. We’re a pot three team in this, which says a lot about the opposition that we will be facing. For the fans, it’s a great thing, because there will never be a match during the first two phases that seems like a gimmie. For the teams that prevail, and eventually win the title, it will be a special accomplishment.”

Taeshawn Gillies (retired DB, our defensive MVP the last three World Bowls): “Man, I wish I was about five years younger. I can’t wait to watch these games, but I really wish I was out there participating!”

Donovan Williams (starting QB): “It’s a challenge, but I never back down from one. We got a good team here, and I guess you can call us underdogs when we are a pot three team. There are a lot of new guys here, or guys in bigger roles, and we are anxious to get out there and show what we can do.”

James Brogan (Football Analyst from Southport): “The format is interesting, but phase 2 is where its at. In any sport that has relegation, the team that is relegated becomes a favorite for promotion the next year as long as they kept their squad marginally in tact. No one wants to be relegated, but you can survive that with a strong phase two and coming back through the playoff game that will take place. The easier route would be to never get relegated in the first place. If you don’t, you should at least be able to stay ahead of that promoted team and get one of those three spots. That is obviously the preferred way, but relegation is not the end of the world after Phase 1 if you are starting in League A like the Rockets are. What this will give the fans is incredible action right from the start. There will never be a game on the schedule that seems less appealing. I can’t wait!”

Team Cassadaigua- World Bowl 37

The nation is a two-time World Bowl champion, winning the 8th and 22nd editions. In their heyday, the team strength has always been the play of the secondary. They’ll get enough offense, but the defensive backs are outstanding, making us difficult to pass against. We might concede yardage on the ground, but its much more difficult to get it in the air.

Another thing to note is that while Cassadagan teams in other sports are notoriously all-female, the football team has always been mixed gender with men placed on the line of scrimmage.

World Bowl 37 preview

Tornado Queedom - Terre Septentrionale is about to make it's World Bowl debut with 78 men and women roster. These men and women are making their World Bowl debut, so other nations never heard about them! Only because we want other nations to know better about our team, here's the top players from Terre Septentrionale:

Haylie Woo - Quarter Back

Haylie Woo has been named the top quarterback ahead of 35 years old Clifford Jenkins. She's one of the most accurate quarterback in Terre Septentrionale and she has an above average arm. She's not affraid to run out of her pocket if she she's a lot of pressure, but she's not a scrambling quarterback.

Montavious McBryde - Running Back

Montavious McBryde has recently become the top running back in the nation. He's actually the most dynamic and speedy runnig back and easily avoids blocks. He can also catch the ball.

Coconut Riddick - Running Back

Coconut Riddick is the most popular running back in Terre Septentrionale where he won a few domestic championships. He's the biggest celebrity on the team, but he's totally unknown outside of Terre Septentrionale.

Jennifer Killebrew - Wide Reciever

Jennifer Killebrew is a tall and athletic wide reciever who can jump high to catch the ball, She's can also run routes very well. Not the fastest reciever on the team but she's still pretty fast.

Keyshawn Woodcock-Hunter - Defensive End

Keyshawn Woodcock-Hunter made the team at 21 years old but it will be in a reservist role. However he's a player to watch for the future. His strenght is pass rushing. Woodcock-Hunter was the best quarterback hunter in college.

Nick Knox - Strongside Linebacker

Nick Knox is top pass rusher on the team, he averages 9 sacks per season in Terre Septentrionale's league. He isn't bad against the run or in coverage but always think about getting to the quarter back first.

Konrad Juszczyk - Inside Linebacker

Kyle Juszczyk is the best player on the team against the run. Your running back will always have him in his face. He's also good in coverage.

DeShawn Lewis-Harris - Cornerback

DeShawn Lewis-Harris is the top cornerback in Terre Septentrionale. He led our domestic league in interceptions early in his career and now opposite quarterbacks are affraid to pass in his direction. He's also one of the best tackler on the team.

Analysis of Zalaba II group

This year, the World Bowl format is a little strange compared to the previous years where Terre Septentrionale didn't participate. The 36 teams are divided in 3 groups of 12. The 12 best teams called league A, the following 12 called league B, and the last 12 called league C. The Nordiques are in the last 12 group. Then each group of 12 has been divided in 3 groups of 4 and The Northmen ended up in Zalaba II group, named after some former Banijan leader. Zalaba II was the one who established Banija's first parliament.

After 6 games, the top team in the Zalaba II group will be promoted to league B. The other three will stay in league C. The Zalaba II group is made of nations who didn't participated in the World Bowl before, and Greater Vakolicci Haven, which is ranked 49th. Greater Vakolicci Haven is the team to beat as they're the only ones who has previous experience. The other teams in our group are Tornado Queendom and Greater Liverpool, both unranked like us. I would say even with anonymous players, Tornado Queendom has a slight advantage over Greater Liverpool. We have no idea how good Terre Septentrionale will be, all nations in the Zalaba II group seems to be toe to toe.

Broadcast

Considering many events occuring at the same time (Sanislawski Cup playoffs, Major Leagues Baseball regular season, Baptism of Fire, World Lacrosse Championships and World Bowl), sports networks in Terre Septentrionale will be busy in april and may. The World Bowl will be broadcasted on NordSports, PolSports and SportsNorth in French, Polish and English respectively. NordSports/PolSports/SportsNorth will be broadcasting two League A matches per matchdays and Terre Septentrionale's game. The channel has announced they will broadcast Cosumar vs Pridnestrovia and Taeshan vs Abanhfleft on matchday one along with Tornado Queendom vs Terre Septentrionale.

Well, let's get this started!

League C: Better to TANK the first phase?
By Chelsea Dufresne, Concord Heights Times

The World Bowl is about to begin, and after taking the last one off, Cassadaigua is returning to the gridiron and are greeted by a very unusual format to face. There will be several preliminary games which are broken into two Phases, one and two. Then, there will be playoffs. That part is not complicated, but now let’s get to the meat of this format, because it’s pretty interesting, and rumors have it, the format is the main reason Cassadagan personnel decided to return to the World Bowl to begin with.

There are three Leagues. One features the best twelve teams (or, eleven plus host, as the host narrowly missed that distinction on rank alone). That is League A. Next comes the next twelve teams, known as League B. Then, there’s the miscellaneous league, known as, getting this pattern?, League C. League C is where you find all the unranked teams, and a couple that were ranked, and that is where we are found. After a double round robin in phase, last place teams in each group are relegated, and first place teams are promoted. Sounds like another sport that likes to call itself football! Groups are redrawn, and phase two is similar with a double round robin.

What does this mean for Cassadaigua? It means League C, and a group with three unrankeds, Geektopia, Torisakia, and the awfully named Shatla. Cassadaigua is the pot one team of this group, and will be favored for promotion into League B after the first phase. Is this a good thing? As I look at the setup of the playoffs, I wonder if it’s actually best to NOT win the group after phase one if you are in League C. In order to make the playoffs from League B, you must finish either first or second in the group. Finish third or fourth, you’re done. As the promoted team from League C after the first phase, you will be an underdog to finish in that top two, given that one of the teams in the group will be a relegated League A team, plus the better ranked teams that were in League B initially. That’s going to make it really hard for promoted League C teams to have a chance at the playoffs.

Nooooow, what if you dooon’t win the group in the first phase of League C? What happens, is that you continue to play the weaker League C opposition in the second phase. Seems good. You get relegated League B teams, and these will be teams that were closer to you in the rankings to begin with, and probably have not provided a ton of press releases. Still sounding good. Now, if you win your group, and are not the worst group winner, YOU ARE STILL ALIVE, unlike the more difficult road of being promoted into League B after the first phase. Win a playoff against that other League C group winner, and you are playoff bound.

For as much as I like the format and think that this will create a lot of excitement, especially for the top ranked teams in the world, I think there was some oversight in the consideration of what happens to the initial Phase 1 Group C winner and their playoff chances. The reality is, as I see it, to tank the first phase in Group C, and then focus on the second phase. Now, how do we tell our players that?

The Concord Heights Times will see you again at the start of Phase 2. Enjoy the games!

The Nordic Football Association has announced the roster for the upcoming World Bowl. The roster has mostly stayed the same although there are a few changes. Longtime quarterback Leif Beck has retired and has joined the coaching staff. The offense stays the same. It is a fun and gun offense with lots of passing and a little bit of running but mainly to set up the pass. The defense is an aggressive one. We like to blitz and bring pressure on the quarterback. Expect a lot of high scoring games from us.

(Recommended to read this intro with this music)

July, 20XX

In Main Nation Ministry, at a prison complex nicknamed "Holmesburg".

The Leader, in a midst of sudden loss of sanity, comes up with the most harshest and brutal way to reduce prison overpopulation in an experiment made out of apathy and sheer boredom.

This experiment was called...

DEATH RUN

The experiment is to convert the entire prison into a battle royale/obstacle course. Freedom for the most major of crimes was offered, if one can escape the prison. Attempts of cheating will be met by death. A single error will be met by death. Cooperation is required for some, but distrust or naive behavior will be met by death.

SEVERAL DAYS BEFORE DEATHRUN

Deathrun: Welcome to Hell

The prison bus drove down the dirt road, as some prisoners looked out the window to see where they were mostly going to be for the remainder of their lives. As the bus got close, the overwhelming sense of dread was present. Most of these prisoners knew they were going to die there eventually, but some already accepted their fate, even though they had some chance of surviving. One prisoner simply sat in the middle of the seats, calmly to himself as he had his eyes closed, almost in a state of trying to block up the noise that was throughout the bus. However, this moment of self-tranquility would be short-lived, as the bus went through the security checkpoints, where several aggressive armed guards started to herd people out of the bus. "Move it! All of you move it!" the guards would say, as they were pulling prisoners out of the bus, where some fell to the ground. Only to be forced back up to walk down a line.

"Down the line! We're assigning you your cells!" a supervisor yelled, as the prisoners were forced to march towards the open gates, where some guards with sniper rifles looked like they had itchy trigger fingers. Along the way, several current prisoners who were in a prison yard saw the new line of prisoners marching inside of the prison. "You should have gotten yourselves killed already!" one of them shouts, where one of them threw a small rock through the fence. However, a guard took notice and immediately aimed his gun towards the crowd of prisoners that were gathered at the fence, where most of them immediately ran the other direction on the other side of the fence. Of course, the guard was just pulling off a warning, but seeing how the area seemed tense, it was probably no surprise.

The interior of the prison was another story, as there seemed to be an endless array of cameras in every corner. Instead of iron bars in cells, there were only plastic walls that didn't seem to be breakable. Only tiny air holes line the plastic walls, as many prisoners just stare on at nothing or look at the new prisoners that come by. "Get in there! Come on!" a soldier yelled, as the new prisoners were being thrown into their cells. 2 for each cell, though each prisoners were just complete strangers to each other. A brief silence occurred as a rather nervous-looking prisoner was suited with the silent type. There was only just a lingering silence after a while, since it was just two random strangers in orange jumpsuits who had nothing in common. Though, seeing the situation they were in, one of them spoke up in a nervous tone.

"Uhhh... Hi?"
"..."
"You don't look like someone who gotten a death sentence. Though, I know I'm not going to make it for several days.."
"You already know that you're going to die eventually?"
"The legal system in Main Nation Ministry is rough. I know that the government testing can reduce my sentence. Even people with a life sentence can do that, so they can shave that 100 years into 50."
"And that can still get people killed. You know the stories that people tell in the Ministry of Science.."
"I'm not staying here for 25 years for assaulting some punk. I have people outside I need to be with."
"I have a life sentence for killing several people. I already accept my fate of dying. Even if I do the experiments."

Eventually, food arrived for all the prisoners to eat. Seeing how snakefish is the main invasive species in Main Nation Ministry, it was the main course on the menu. The food on the tray looked more like a crappy TV dinner. Actually, the food was microwaved. Though, it was expected. The prisoner who was with the silent type was trying to enjoy his food, since it tasted bad. Looking over, he saw his roommate silently eating his food. "By the way, I hadn't caught your name. I'm Hoffman. What's yours?" Hoffman asked him.

"Brandon." he said, before returning to eating his food.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF ABANHFLEFT
National American football team

Abanhfleft returns to the World Bowl after getting beaten by Banija for the bronze in the competition's 36rd edition for another shot at lifting that elusive trophy. The team went through a lot of challenges before finally lifting that coveted trophy, up to and including losing team members and staff in the crash of Air Abanhfleft Flight 5116 as well as being once swept aside by The United States of Saints, an unranked team at the time of that particular competition but is now nowhere to be found once again. Consistency is the key, they say, and Abanhfleft has been a little bit consistent these past few competitions; consistently losing, that is. The warriors of Abanhfleft will hope to buck that trend and regain both the crown and top spot this time, and maybe even knock off their Coalition comrade Pridnestrovia.

BASIC INFORMATION
Name of nation
: Democratic Republic of Abanhfleft
Demonym: Fleftic
Official history: This will be Abanhfleft's ninth time playing the World Bowl after the disaster that was the crash of Air Abanhfleft Flight 5116 in Electrum. This is Abanhfleft's twelfth time participating in the World Bowl overall.
Team colors: Blue, orange, and green
Style modifier: +2. Abanhfleft has adopted a new, more conservative attacking style of play under new coach Marius Magnussen.

HOME STADIUM
Image
The Amado Isauro-Imponte Garden in Kammala, Garufaloe Province, home of the Garufaloe Cobras of the FNLAF, will be playing host to the Fleftic national gridiron team's home matches. It has an official capacity of 51,000 people, but attendance regularly exceeds that figure thanks to a rabid fanbase, and people preferring to stand up or sit on the stairs whenever capacity is filled.

NATIONAL GRIDIRON FOOTBALL TEAM

Glory to the Pridnestrovian Republic! All hail the mighty achievements of the Pridnestrovian national gridiron football team, who have won the 36th World Bowl without losing a single game! Truly a magnificent feat! And all this would not have been possible without the infinite wisdom and clarity of vision of the Comrade President Field Marshal Stepan Stepanovich Stepanenko, for without him Pridnestrovia would never have gone to the World Bowl, nor would the immensely successful Pridnestrovian Gridiron Super League have been established. World Bowl 36 - Ko-orenite National Team

Head Coach Committees
Offence: Sajerkun Mulestinthen (Wolves), Gyalong Woganure (Emperors), Liam Karneveld (Astronauts), Lyman Rule (Godspeed), Preston Withers (Saints)
Defence: Hypo Bourguignon (Caspians), Pollmodd yFawgaff (Centaurs), Oli Breukelman (65ers), Noah Westerhof (Admirals), Pinoles Mulestinthen (Destroyers)
Special Teams: Sep Nordholt (Dragonflies), Avape Aemenos (Explosions)

Offence
The Head Coach by Committee has come up with a slightly tweaked roster compared to the previous one. The focus lies on speed. The skill positions have been selected for speed, outside of a single bulky running back (Thorebourne), a blocking tight end (Van Luttert), and two typical X-receivers (Whitlock, Lokaguthen). As for the quarterbacks, the best players have been selected, regardless of style - which resulted in all three QBs of last World Bowl making way for these three. Parkes is an intelligent QB who's comfortable in the pocket. Arerira is more of a dual threat than the rest. Reeman likes to scramble, extend plays, and find deep targets. There will be a few more running plays. There will be higher personnel numbers on the field as well: most plays will be run from 02, 12, 22, 21 or 11 personnel (for personnel numbers: the first number gives the amount of running backs/fullbacks, the second number gives the amount of tight ends. Expect a lot of TE-heavy sets). Any play can be run from almost any set: personnel won't give away the kind of play - though you shouldn't expect a lot of receiving running backs and the like. There will be stunts on the O-line, Brande and Lunorin can reliably pull and create a mismatch elsewhere.

The coaches couldn't completely eliminate all risks. There remains a lack of OL and TE depth, especially with the amount of tight ends used in plays. Wide reciever play is generally not that great in Ko-oren, so it won't make the difference in this team either.

Defence
Size and power are key for the defence this World Bowl. The coaches that make up the defensive side of the Head Coach by Committee all show a preference for big, hard-hitting players. The move towards five DBs on the field for at least half of all plays last World Bowl has been reversed, and you can expect plenty of 3-4 fronts. A DT spot has been sacrificed to make room for more ILBs. Defensive line play remains a problem for the Green and Blue, especially so from the defensive ends, of which there just aren't many. The choice for 3-4 is easily made. Linebackers are the cornerstone of this defence: the sacks and tackles all have to come from them. Safeties will be asked to cover deep (zones), cornerbacks will be primarily man-to-man. Defensive back play in Ko-oren is seriously good, and almost all DBs are great playmakers.

Special Teams
Special team play always has a special place in Ko-orenite gridiron football. It is taken seriously, it is analysed thoroughly, and with a defence like ours, punting is a weapon. Trick plays are involved every now and again, too. Aecherin (LS) is selected straight from the Salamantic Professors, the Ko-orenite NSCF team that has made waves. Aecherin leaves the 'college' team for the professionals, but hasn't found a pro team yet.

Home Field: National Stadium, Roan-Ottonia Federal District (Capacity: 96,000) - The national public stadium, which plays host to all of the Federation's national teams across multiple sports, as well as Ottonia's AGL team. The stadium was first built in the 1950's, and has been refurbished, upgraded, expanded, and renovated twice since then. Still, it is, at bottom, an old-school stadium where the home team's accommodations are much nicer than the visiting ones, and fans will be comfortable, but probably not pampered. The stadium has a retractable roof, but the Regulars will usually play with it open, to take advantage of their comfort in the Allamunnic States' often-inclement weather.

General Information

Overview:

World Bowl XXXVI was a disaster for the Allamunnic States. Six wins to four losses and a third-place group stage finish saw the Regulars miss the Round of Sixteen for the first time since World Bowl XI, and the end of that streak also saw the end of 3-time World Bowl champion head coach Baeryk Vaalburger's tenure with the team. In his place, long-time assistant Phillipa Demirici was promoted to head coach, overseeing a staff that includes other former players such as Maarkus Daalhulm (at offensive coordinator) and Theodur Laansur (at defensive coordinator), among others.

The root of the problem, as many inside and outside the organization saw it, was the ongoing tension between the national team organization and the Allamunnic Gridiron League. The National Team and AGL had spent the last few years actively competing for the best rising talent, with the deeper pockets of the AGL teams often winning the day, leaving the National Team with a talent drain. Allamunnic Sporting Commissioner Ben Jamesunn said the situation could not hold, and a compromise had to be struck with the AGL.

The result is that the National Team will officially be considered a part of the AGL's developmental system, and will limit itself to the recruitment of players between the ages of 17 and 22, who, once they reach age 20, will be eligible for the AGL draft. In exchange for essentially getting first pick of young talents over other developmental leagues' teams, the National Team will essentially make it a national U-22 team. This should have the added benefit of showcasing Allamunnic athletic talent to the world, as Allamunnic developmental teams, not being tied to collegiate institutions, have generally been ineligible for international collegiate gridiron football competitions.

What this means is that the new staff are able to return to what they want, systemically, rather than having to adjust to what they have. The team's play-style is still likely to feature a fundamentally rough-and-tumble, win-in-the-trenches attitude, although some variety will be needed to keep talented players flowing in at various positions. Demirici and her staff are on a short leash: they are expected to get this team back to the World Bowl Semi Finals within two years, with termination of their positions likely if they fail to do so.

The new recruitment rules also basically cleaned out the Regulars' roster; it's going to be a cast of almost entirely new faces this time around, with only a handful of holdovers (most of them non-starters) from World Bowl XXXVI. Those sixteen 21-year-old players will be the nucleus that the other 54 players are recruited around.

Please note that the Regulars are generally 3 players deep at each position (and more in some cases). Still, one should not expect players beyond second string to see much in the way of playing time unless injuries become an issue.

Front Office & General Staff

Commissioner: Benjamin Jamesunn (Age: 74) - Following the brief, tumultuous, and, to a lesser extent, disastrous tenure of Gaarutt Kolvyn as Allamunnic Sporting Commissioner for the duration of World Bowl XXXI, long-time Allamunnic National Gridiron Team executive and administrator Benjamin Jamesunn was selected by the Board as the next Commissioner. Jamesunn has a strong grasp of the practices that have long enabled the National Gridiron Team to be successful, and has pledged a return to the patient approach that has yielded six championships since World Bowl XVI.

General Manager: Erik Warnur (Age: 57)
Director of Player Personnel: Anna Torrensunn (Age: 49)

Coaching Staff

Head Coach & Coordinators
Head Coach: Phillipa Demirici (Age: 59) - Phillipa Demirici joined the Allamunnic National Gridiron Program during the team's inaugural World Bowl VII campaign as a kicker. In the 31 years that have elapsed since then, she has made the transition from player, to kicking coach, to special teams coordinator, to assistant head coach and now, finally, head coach of the Regulars. She is very much a student of the Stevan Vaalburger school of thought, prioritizing victory in the trenches and team cohesion and discipline. However, she is less committed to specific offensive or defensive systems, and has left the installation of both systems to her coordinators, former teammates and long-time members of the staff.

Offensive Coordinator: Maarkus Daalhulm (Age: 53) - Daalhulm was not quite there from the beginning, coming on board as a player during World Bowl IX, but he has been a stalwart Regular ever since, as a quarterback who refused to go away from World Bowl IX to World Bowl XVI, and since then as a coach. Although Daalhulm has a certain fascination with power-option systems, he's tinkered the Allamunnic offense back into a shape most will be accustomed to: a vertical, smashmouth offense run primarily out of the I-formation.

Defensive Coordinator: Theodur Laansur (Age: 52) - Theo Laansur, in similar fashion, was a long-time defensive lineman for the Regulars, tying up blockers as a dominant nose tackle on some of the best squads the Allamunnic States ever fielded. As a coach, he's a proud adherent of the Vaalburger school of winning in the trenches, and, with more personnel freedom, has taken the Regulars back to a more standard 3-4/4-3 hybrid defense that can showcase aggressive and capable defenders in the front seven, letting them make life easier for the secondary.

Special Teams Coordinator: Gretchen Vaalhulmsunn (Age: 45) - Long-time special teams assistant Gretchen Vaalhulmsunn fills Demirici's old post of Special Team's Coordinator. However, it is, in some ways, a ceremonial promotion: Demirici is expected to remain hands-on with her old unit while Vaalhulmsunn grows into the role.

Quarterbacks Coach: Izaak Kleiner (Age: 45)
Running Backs Coach: Haanryk Staalburg (Age: 52)
Tight Ends Coach: Zak Hall (Age: 45)
Wide Receivers Coach: Mikel Dunn (Age: 54)
Offensive Line Coach: Hanrik Wurfytur (Age: 50)
Offensive Line Assistant Coach: Vaalhulm Rikken (Age: 44)
Defensive Line Coach: Archie Wagner (Age: 49)
Linebackers Coach: Miles Ryan (Age: 51)
Linebackers Assistant: Jason Ridley (Age: 51)
Defensive Backs Coach: Andrik Ierunmungur (Age: 51)
Defensive Backs Assistant: Leif Coelmunn (Age: 44)
Kicking Coach: Wyatt Skode (Age: 42)
Returners Coach: Gretchen Vaalhulmsunn (Age: 45)

The Team

Offense

Overview:
The Regulars' "new" offense will be instantly recognizable to anyone who has watched a Regulars' squad take the field in the last 30 years. The offense is fundamentally the same smashmouth offense the Allamunnic squad has always favored, run, as has generally (if not always) been the case, out of the I-formation. The Regulars generally try to keep their play-calling in the realm of balance, but runs will outnumber passes more often than not, unless the team falls far behind early.

This offense is built primarily to move the ball methodically down the field. There's enough athletic talent for the team to bust big plays, but most plays are drawn up to only move the ball a few yards at a time. On the ground, runs between the tackles will be the most-frequent playcall, and through the air, expect to see lots of throws to receivers running post and slant routes. The players are drilled to take what the defense gives them, so expect plenty of check-downs and pile-pushes.

Defense

Overview:

With greater versatility once again available to the Regulars in their talent base, Theo Laansur has gone wild in reinstalling the Regulars' old multifront defense. The team is designed to win in the front seven, but utilizes hybrid players at three positions to make it possible to use the same personnel groupings to form anything from a 4-4 Bear defense to a 4-2 or 3-3-5 nickel defense with the same personnel. That said, the Regulars' personnel are generally recruited with playing a flexible variant of the 3-4 defense in mind: in a base package, the Regulars line up three down linemen, four linebackers, and four defensive backs.

Laansur's play-calling will trend towards the aggressive end of the spectrum; the Regulars are likely to mask underdeveloped players by bringing blitzes and disguising coverage schemes to throw offenses off. Expect the team to lean on its front seven to assist an undersized defensive backfield, and to generally be at greater risk of allowing big plays through the air rather than on the ground.

Special Teams

Overview:
Once upon a time, Special Teams were a major weakness for the Regulars. Those days are long past, but still, it's not generally considered an exceptional strength of the Allamunnic team. The Regulars are generally solid on special teams, but don't tend to generate many big plays of their own using the unit; the team is coached to use punts and kick-offs to play the game of field position, rather than trying to score on every touch of the ball. That methodical approach has its benefits (the Regulars rarely find themselves in bad positions after punts or kick-offs) but also its drawbacks (the kind of electrifying plays teams can generate on returns tend to elude the Allamunnae). Still, that's just how they tend to operate.
