It seems impossible, but it is true: The cricket pitch is once again back as a football stadium. (Naruto Shinagawa Field is under maintenance.) Seating 100,000, the nation's oldest multi-purpose venue returns, this time to host the most important matches of the Campionato Esportiva: its knockouts. Also home to the Nationals cricket club, it also served as the home to National Sporting (now NatSport) when it played its football matches in the nation's capital. It now plays in the city of Nasutani for the Independents Coalition League (ICL), the unofficial third level of the Damukuni football pyramid.

Emerald Coast Resort Stadium
Emerald Coast, East Town, EF
Seats: 24,893

Hosts: Group A matches

Image

No, it's not the field you think it is. The field with the full seating is the East Town Cricket Club, which is (to the chagrin of many) not being used for this tournament. The Emerald Coast Resort Stadium is the one further down in the picture. Don't worry, however: it seats nearly 25,000 patrons. The Emerald Coast Resort, which owns the field, graciously granted the Damukuni FA playing rights in the stadium exclusively for this CE. Players and fans have exclusive use of the resort for the duration of the Group Stage, which includes a full fitness centre, Jacuzzi, arcade, pool, and other amenities.*
*Fans will not have access to amenities during scheduled team amenity use times, nor will they have access to either the teams' or press' floor, for purposes of privacy. Additionally, the elevators nearest the side door are off-limits to non-players and non-press for the entirety of the Group Stage.

Twinkle Park Indoor Events Centre
West Bay, WB
Seats: 17,899

Hosts: Group B matches, Two Quarterfinals

Image

The Twinkle Park Indoor Events Centre, part of the 9Lives Twinkle Park amusement park, is a stadium and convention centre in the city of West Bay. Former home to West Bay City FC, it fell into disuse as a sport stadium and was used primarily for concerts and conventions, including the West Bay Comic-Con. 2036 marks the first year of the centre's return to sports, as it hosts not only the Group B stage play but also two quarterfinal matches.

Mattijanan Roster and Information for Campionato Esportiva 22

The Story So Far

Following his integration into the Mattijanan international setup just before World Cup 79, new manager Dušan Vukoja led his side to their best ever World Cup qualifying finish with a 5th place in the group and a record 26 points, including 8 victories. Despite a early charge where qualification was far a while on the cards, the team went off the boil late in the period, but beat Platerdam 4-0 on the final day of competition to end the cycle on a high.

From there, it was on to Copper Cuprum and the Fhulgamous Peninsula for the 21st Campionato Esportiva. Hopes were high following a third place on home soil at the 20th event and having negotiated the group stage, a 3-2 win over South Covello, probably the greatest Mattijanan win of all time, and another 2-3 win against hosts Fhulgamous Peninsula got them into the semi-finals.

A 1-0 extra time loss to Filindostan would relegate them to the 3rd place playoff, but the same result in their favour against Islana Lunigo sealed a second consecutive bronze.

The next tournament was a development one in South Toronto, with a development team from Mattijana to go with it. This time the team didn't fare so well, failing to escape the group and only taking two draws home with them. That led to the first team squad ultimately being restored rather than promotions from the fringe and Under 23s being brought in.

In the end however, things didn't pan out as planned. Mattijana slipped to 7th in a highly competitive group 12 with the campaign largely described as frustrating, inconsistent and very very Mattijanan. Despite being free-scoring at one end, they ultimately failed to do the business at the other in the crucial moments, a trait that earned the team the second-highest number of draws of all 150 sides involved in world cup qualifying.

Dusan Vukoja, in desperate need of some improved results, has therefore decided to shake up the squad and starting lineup a little. The key, established players remain, especially in attacking positions, but changes have been made defensively with the experienced, but ageing Edvard Crajasovic expected to be replaced in central defence by Rikard Illicic and Kevin Krychowiak a possible swap for Dominik Illisevic.

Formation

Head Coach: Dusan Vukoja
Appointed manager around a month before his first game in charge, Vukoja left Division 1 side FK Puljanka for the National team job, having recorded the club’s best finish in 10 years with 5th, behind only Burges, the two Petrovijanka clubs and FK Revinka. The south-Mattijanan had previously spent time at FK Burges both as assistant and full-time manager after a spell at lower-table side Jamas, where he succeeded in rescuing the team from almost imminent relegation. Now aged 40, Vukoja did not enjoy a lengthy playing career due to injury, but says that coaching is his real passion.
With Ljubanik’s style of play turning increasingly turgid and results also suffering, the Mattijanan FA and fans decided to seek a more exciting brand of football that had been on show at Puljanka in their 5th-place success last season. However the pressure was on the new man to deliver both results and more exciting football.

Assistant Manager: Dominik Samikov (FK Burges)

The assistant manager at Championship leaders FK Burges hails from the North-East of Mattijana and began his career at Dinamo Legisaw, another division 2 side before then moving as one of the tactical staff to FK Burges, where he has since worked his way up the pecking order to assistant manager. He has an excellent tactical mind as well as good player welfare skills and helps out Ljubanik in both management areas. He has so far proved himself to be a capable aid.

Head Scout: Marcel Kuzbacher

Marcel Kuzbacher is a seasoned scout, mainly plying his trade for the famed Puljanka Academy. He has links with numerous players in the Mattijanan squad as well as the under-21 side and makes up the 3-man selection panel alongside Samikov and Ljubanik.

Fitness Coordinator: Jelena Neumanič

Jelena Neumanič is responsible for the diet and fitness of the squad, freeing up the main management team to think about tactical matters. She has a solid variety of exercises and is well-known for getting on player's backs if they don't keep up with their expected effort levels.

Psychologist: Samira Kazmir

Samira Kazmir is an experienced sports psychologist who has done work for both the summer and winter Olympic teams, the Mattijanan ITT side and the MRT motor racing team. She is responsible for the mental welfare of players, stretching from the collective mind-set to more personal issues for each individual in the squad. It's a far-reaching and often complicated task.

The Medical Team:

Head Doctor: Dr Charlotte Smitič
Assistant Doctor: Dr Mattias Buranov
Physio: Martina Laramazič
Physio: Mika Glasnić

The Players:
GK-Lucija Handanovic-#12-Age 26-FK Revinka
Understudy to Matej Handanovic for most of Ljubanik’s tenure, Lucija is favourite to start between the sticks for Mattijana in the upcoming qualifiers. The 25 year old has impressed for club side Revinka in the recent season with both solid performances and heroic clean-sheets and will be tricky to keep out of a starting place.

LB-Helena Neumann-#2

The Burges Player is a regular in the championship leading side and will provide a good defensive option with the occasional run forward to help out the wingers. Barring any injuries or unlikely suspensions, she will play all of Mattijana's matches,

CB- Rikard Illicić-#14
The first Mattijanan player to move abroad, specifically to the top dovision in Buyan, Illicić is widely expected to replace Edvard Crajasović in the starting lineup on the retirement of the current first choice centre back. He is modelled in a similar style as his older counterpart too. He's big, he's strong and despite being slower than other defenders, he is able to stamp his authority on attackers. Expect him to start matches, particularly against lower-ranked opposition.

CB-Katija Burnisevič-#4-Captain

Another Burges Player, Burnisevič is a potential answer to Crajasović's clumsiness and is a quick, skilful and sure-footed player capable of taking the fight to those attempting to run through. She is a dedicated player, happy to chase any lost cause until the ball crosses the line. Her lack of physical strength may be her weakness however and she could be a potential target for more powerful strikers.

RB-Kevin Krychowiak-#13-Age 22-Matbirjke
Another promotion from the under 23s, Krychowiak is a typical modern full-back with his pace and attacking mindset. It is his similarity to current starter Dominik Illisević that keeps him on the bench for now, but he is in Dušan Vukoja's plans this cycle both off the bench and perhaps even to start in games against lower-ranked opponents.

CM-Jago Adrianov-#8
Adrianov is the typical midfield enforcer with a hard tackle and a driving run on him which can terrorise both attackers and other midfielders. He's also not afraid to hit one from range with varying success. He is probably the most likely player to pick up cards however, so could be a potential liability. This will most likely be the 34 year old's final world cup cycle, with retirement announced for after the tounament.

LM-Sophia Velezia-#16
A mazy winger with less raw pace, but the ability to turn any defender into a messy knot, Velezia is a constant challenge to keep quiet on her day and normally gets through at some point if she hits top form. Her mercurial nature is her biggest and arguably only weakness, but Mattijana will be well-placed if she can get it together.

CM-Marko Hojbjerg-#7

Another young midfielder at just 25, Hojbjerg is a playmaker with good awareness and passing ability and is the perfect fit for Ljubanik's technical brand of football. Useful for connecting the more attacking players ahead of him, he is also integral in providing the start or the killer pass in a counter-attack. When no forward options are available, he's not afraid to hit one and occasionally finds the back of the net from improbable ranges.

CM-Katarina Jakupovic-#15
Captain of Mattijana’s under-23 side, Jakupovic is a part of Vukoja’s turn to a more attractive style with Jago Adrianov, the midfield enforcer out and the instinctive passer promoted to a starting role. The 23 year-old Snezn player has impressed with both her technique and maturity in the early years of her career and is touted as a future Mattijanan captain after a successful run in the Under-23s.

RM-Jessika Struna-#9

A pacey winger who's preferred play is to make a run and then a cross, the 26 year old Struna is a dynamic and different part of the Mattijanan team. Tipped for a move to Petrovijanka or Burges, Struna chose to stay at Revinka, close to her family and in the town she loves.

FW-Mathilde Lekarisa-#10

Rapid Petrovijanka's 28 year old forward is a lethal finisher with a left foot that makes up for a lack of power with high precision. She enjoys running onto through balls and cutting inside to curl shots into the far corners of the goal. She is expected to play well having scored 5 goals in her last 4 games for Rapid.

The Bench:
GK-Matej Handanović-#1
The 29 year old Mattijanan number 1 plays under Matej Ljubanik at FK Petrovijanka and has been a solid, if unspectacular option between the sticks for most of his career. He has good handling skills and makes few mistakes, but could be replaced if he fails to make the spectacular stops expected of him. He may also face renewed competition from the younger and more dynamic Martin Vaskaric.

RB-Dominik Illisević-#5

Now a regular for FK Puljanka, Illisević is a punchy and pacey player with outstanding fitness and good crossing ability. His defensive technique is the biggest question mark, but if he can have a solid match at the back, he will undoubtedly be a danger coming forward.

CB-Edvard Crajasović-#3

The towering centre back is a regular for a Revinka side currently sitting fourth in the division 1 table. His height gives him a significant advantage when defending high balls and presents a threat at set-pieces. However, he can be clumsy when faced with skilful runners and does rely on a more quick-footed defensive partner in order to be successful.

LM-Sofiane Bisrali-#6
From the less familiar setting of Shalkar in the South-East, Bisrali has the pace and skill that Vukoja is looking for in his wingers. Replacing the mercurial Sophia Velezia in the starting line-up, the 22 year old has a lot to live up to early in his career, but has the chance to do it on the biggest stage.

CAM-Mattias Hoffman-#22-Age 24-Rapid Petrovijanka
Hoffman established himself as an impact player during the 79th cycle, scoring twice from the bench and making a substitute appearance in 15 of the 18 games. He offers a dynamic and direct approach when required and has cut open tired defences on a number of occasions. His consistency across longer periods has so far kept him out of the first team, but he remains a very useful and versatile player for Vukoja.

FW- Kara Lorenzič, age 22, Matbirjke

FW-Andreas Weiss-#11

The 30 year old Burges Striker has been a fixture in the Mattijanan team for a while now and has matched his performances for the national side with consistent scoring form for FK Burges. He is a poacher with the ability to be in the right place at the right time for any pull-back into the box. Also a good header of the ball, Weiss will be an intimidating target for high crosses if the Mattijanan plan-B is needed.

The Reserves:

GK-Martin Vaskaric-#19-Age 22-FK Antalja
LB-Lara Ljunavic-#20-Age 28-FK Revinka
CAM-Juliana Kjofmann-#24-Age 24-Weststrand FK
ST-Daniella Alaba-#18-Age 26-Puljanka
It is difficult to tell where Alaba's strengths really lie as she is relatively quick, but not lightening fast and despite good strength, she is no match for more bulky defenders. Where she is effective is as a goal poacher, using positioning to find space to latch onto crosses and loose balls from fairly close range.

About Mattijana!

Mattijana is a large safe nation in Esportiva with a significant, but proportionate population. It spans a fairly large range of climates with the far north a colder area, the central region temperate, the south Mediteranean and the South-East semi-desert. Petrovijanka, the setting for this competition, is located almost exactly in the centre of the country at 214-232 metres above sea level. It has summer highs of around 28°C and lows of -5°C in the winter. There is a high level of sunshine for most of the year with precipitation mostly snowfall in the winter months.

Culturally, Mattijana can also be divided into six regions. The West of the country is largely Germanic whilst the centre North is a mix of Slavic and Germanic cultures, centred around Mattijana's second city, Burges. The North and East are more Scandinavian and speak Dansk, a language similar to Danish. The Centre (where Petrovijanka is situated) and the South are Slavic (similar to the Slovenian and Croatian cultures). There is an Arabic community in the South-East.

All Mattijanans speak the official language, Mattijanan. However, due to this not being spoken anywhere else in the World, English and German are well-spoken throughout the country whilst Arabic is taken on by the most intelligent students (in addition to English and German) as well as by those in the South-East.
There is no official religion in Mattijana due to this mix of cultures. Islam is popular in the South-East and parts of the South whilst some in the East follow the Mattijanan Orthodox church. Most people hold no religious belief, but believe in the universal philosophy of being kind, welcoming and helpful to others, known nationally as Jelenara. Even in religious communities, it is these principals that are most talked of with religious figures used to preach them.
Due to the mix/match nature of Mattijanan cultures and these philosophies, religious symbols are uncommon and religious tolerance is very high.

Attitudes to drink and sex are fairly liberal whilst there is good gender, sexual and racial equality. Social mobility is also good and the rich earn only twice as much as the poorest. Cannabis and similar recreational drugs are banned by law, with cannabis also forbidden for medical use.

The government follows mildly socialist policies meaning the tax rate is fairly high, but schools, hospitals and other public services are all well-funded and either free or reasonably-priced. Taxes on large businesses are higher than on small ones. The government building is the MattiStaja, which is situated on Staja square in the centre of Petrovijanka. All six regions have their own smaller congresses however. Politicians are generally appreciated and although public decisions are limited to elections and important political decisions where the main population is the most affected, most citizens feel well represented due to the numerous meeting and discussion opportunities with their local politician.
All parties follow a similar philosophy, but mainly disagree on where to fund the most. The MattijanaLeušaBuro is the current elected party and have an emphasis on public services, but other popular parties are the ViroBuro (who generally promote the needs of the environment) and the NašinalBuro (who promote funding for employment opportunities).

National Stadia

Due to a large land mass and numerous good quality stadia, the Mattijanan FA prefers to rotate games around a few different grounds. Having said that, the Stadijo Nasinal and the Stadijo Dinamov play host to the bulk of the matches due to the central position of Burges and Petrovijanka, their size and their reputation for providing excellent hosting services.

Stadijo Dinamov
Image
The Stadijo Dinamov in Petrovijanka is the second biggest football stadium in Mattijana and is one of the five stadiums that share the hosting honours for international matches. It is used on a weekly basis by FK Petrovijanka, Matej Ljubanik's old club, having built by them in 1940 and upgraded twice in 1972 and 2001. The capacity is 60,000.
The stadium is found to the north of the city's old town.

Stadijo Nasinal-Burges
Image
The Stadijo Nasinal is Mattijana's largest multi-purpose sports stadium with retractable grass and astroturf surfaces to cater for cater for Cricket, Hockey, Rugby and Football matches. There is a capacity of 90,000. The Stadium was built in 1985 and heavily upgraded just 4 years ago in preparation for the Cricket T20 World Cup. It is situated on the South bank of the Juliana river, just next to the water and just East of the NordesParke.

Stadijo Snezn:
Image
City: Snezn
Capacity: 37,000
Club residents: FK Snezn
Location: Western Snezn, not far from the old town.
Transport: 10-15 minutes walk from central Snezn, 10 minutes cycle. S3 tram or B3 Bus routes.

The Stadijo Snezn is situated in Mattijana's most northernmost city and is a more modern ground, with a generic rectangular shape and fairly modest capacity. This feature however makes it very accessible and easy to use, so a match here should be a reasonably comfortable experience, despite the cold. The stadium was built around 15 years ago, by owners FK Snezn.

Stadijo Katarina Zafarova:
Image
City: Revinka
Capacity: 30,000
Club residents: FK Revinka
Location: Coast, Eastern Revinka
Transport: S2 Tram route, 20 minute walk/10 minute cycle from city centre.

Another modern multi-purpose stadium, Revinka's regular evening thunderstorms mean that a roof has recently been added to the stadium to make for all-weather events. The stadium is already used for Hockey, rugby, football and handball and is named after Revinka and Mattijanan national Hockey captain Katarina Zafarova.

Garijo Ales Struna:
Image
City: Puljanka
Capacity: 40,000
Club residents: FK Puljanka
Location: Garijo Struna, north-west Puljanka
Transport: 10 minute walk/5 minute cycle from City centre. S11 Tram route.

An older, but very traditional stadium in a park just north-east of Puljanka's centre, the ground has progressed from humble beginnings as a playing field to one of the most recognisable stadiums in the country.
The ground has been upgraded in accordance with Mattijanan FA rules, but still retains much of its old history and is a beautiful place to watch a game. The most distinctive features are the arches spanning the length of the North and South stands.

WesterStadion:
Image
City: WestStrand
Capacity: 70,000
Club Residents: Weststrand FK
Location: Northern Weststrand
Transport: 10 minutes on foot from Weststrand city centre and main train station. B1 bus route from city centre.

One of the newest stadiums in Mattijana, the Westerstadion was built to reflect its resident's consolidation of a place in the Mattijanan premier league, which gave the club enough funds to move out of a small and battered old ground into a shining new 70,000 capacity creation on part of a former park in the north of Weststrand.
The ground is used almost exclusively for football, although there is talk of rugby also being allowed to take place at the ground. The stadium's modernity means it is accessible and comfortable.

Around Weststrand:
The most Germanic of Mattijana's cities, Weststrand is situated on the west coast of the country and is part of a more rugged section of coastline extending for hundreds of kilometres. As a result, the weather is generally windier than in most locations, with rain coming off the sea regularly.
The town itself has a more colonial feel to it, with imposing buildings on the seafront giving way to narrow, but buzzing backstreets containing a number of quirky independent shops. Watersports are also popular in the area. Cuisine is largely seafood-based, with mussels a very popular choice in the region.

Long Distance Travel:

International airports are found in Burges, Revinka and Petrovijanka, with some Esportivan flights also heading to Snezn. Shuttle underground trains from airports to corresponding city centres will be subsidised for the duration of the tournament. High speed rail links extend between all cities and airports, making travel to Puljanka and Snezn also relatively painless. There are express services between Petrovijanka and Burges, Burges and Snezn, and Revinka and Puljanka.
Those from reasonably local countries looking to travel to Revinka or Snezn may wish to consider travel by sea. Both cities have good ferry ports and road and underground links to the city centres they serve.

Tournament Date on Kernovian Calendars: 1976 (Kernovi and Rewgwlas currently exists in 2018, but tournaments are interpreted as occurring in the past of the nation)

What is Kernovi and Rewgwlas: Kernovi and Rewgwlas is a recently nation in the north of Esportiva consisting of the coastal island of Kernovi and the arctic island of Rewgwlas. In the year 1976, the United Kingdom of Kernovi and Rewgwlas was ruled by King Tristram IV and Premier Sir Hyrum Lister from the federal capital of Isca.

It is notable that Kernovi and Rewgwlas has two capitals, the federal capital of Isca on the Kernovian Island and the city of Kayanewl, capital of the Rewgwlasian island. This is owing to the distinct levels of autonomy granted to the Rewgwlas and it's Provincial Parliament.

Three official languages are spoken in Kernovi and Rewgwlas; Kernovian (OOC: a personally modified version of Cornish), English and Kernovian Icelandic.

The nation is heavily federalised. In 1976, the provinces of Kernovi and Rewgwlas are Isca, Swyftlandre-Asisi, the Stenlands, Pennsevik Meurig Enys, Rewgwlas and Petroc. By 1990, the provinces would be widened into Isca, Swyftlandre, Asisi, Sten Omdhi'Skans, Stengwlas, Pennsevik Meurig Enys, Rewgwlas and Petroc.

Kernovi and Rewgwlas in 1976:
(Will do this ahead of every tournament, to flesh out the nation and peoples that are competing a bit)

Prior to 1975, Kernovi and Rewgwlas and North Kernovi (Swyftlandre) existed as separate countries occupying the island of Kernovi, represented by a broken but healing relationship following the annexation of North Kernovi under Josef Conomor’s militaristic, right-wing government in 1936, although this land was ceded back following the victory of the Liberation Government operating in Rewgwlas in 1949.

However, Josef Conomor’s actions did not quench the thirst for unity. While initially dampened, the people of both halves of the Kernovian Divide expressed an empathetic support for Kernovian Unity. In Kernovi’s 1969 Snap Election, Sir Hyrum Lister, the former minister to the Tangye Government (nb: Premier Ulysses Tangye is a very distant relative to the national team captain Geraint Tangye) and Chancellor under the Merthyr Government (Premiers to the dominating Gwydn Ros (White Rose) Party, who retained power for 19 years between 1950-1969) who had resigned the party and left with fifty-three Gwydn Ros Representatives on the very issue of ailing North-South relationships following the heated National Bay Negotiations, triggering the collapse of the Merthyr Administration, swept to power under the new party, the Liberal Democratic Unionists (Hel Gwerinel Unyansow or HGU). Prior to the election, during the 1969 HGU First Party Conference, the party presented proposals for reopening negotiations with the ultimate aim of securing greater relationships via the abolition of border control between the nations (except for the transport of goods) and a more equitable solution to the National Bay Negotiations. However, this proposal was defeated by grassroots activists, who instead successfully petitioned party leader Sir Hyrum Lister to negotiate for national unity. It was this policy, alongside proposals for better welfare and education, that swept the HGU to victory in their mere first year of existence. This desire would be reciprocated North of the border, as the southern optimism boosted northern pro-Unionist party Alliance into victory in 1971. All of this culminated in the Treaty of Faywynne, which collapsed Kernovi and Rewgwlas and North Kernovi not into vassalages of one or another but rather into a united nation sharing one currency and one border, where the nations true potential could be achieved after a rocky history.

The contentious issue of the Kernovian Royal Family (to which the North Kernovians disagreed with) was resolved by the Millennium Clause, where the future of the monarchy would automatically be put to a vote on January 2000. (although this referendum would actually occur two years prior, in 1997).

In terms of sports, many sporting confederations, including the Rugby League and Football League across the islands Kernovi and Rewgwlas were merged into one nationwide league, although the differing heritage of the three regions (Kernovi, North Kernovi and Rewgwlas) is celebrated in the Fairwind Cup, a biennial sporting competition between the regions. The Campionato Esportiva 22 therefore marked the first international tournament for the teams and players received their first caps at the event.

Other important events include the Kayanewl New Years Earthquake and subsequent Rudh Pajarpaw Eruption in Rewgwlas, which welcomed in the 1976 New Year, killing 12 and prompting disruptions to air travel, the establishment of nationally funded television network KRNTV (Kernovi and Rewgwlas National TV), the creation of free at the point of service health care in the province of Asisi (North Kernovi), the execution of serial killer Arthur Breas and the first Kernovi Day, a national yearly bank holiday to celebrate the unification of North and South Kernovi.

All Kernovi and Rewgwlas matches in the 22nd Campionato Esportiva, alongside games in their group during the group stage were contracted to broadcast on KRNTV, while the licence to other games was sold to alternative networks.

Soute National Team

Soute makes their debut international appearance at the twenty-second rendition of the Campionato Esportiva. The nation has opened its doors to the scene of international football in accordance with the new professional league. The team is very much in a developmental phase, really the infancy phase, but the nation stands hopeful for a respectable showing in their first tournament. All players in the national team played for clubs in the Soute League. However, this may change as Soute's top players look abroad to develop their talent. The manager, Walenty Jez, won the honor of leading the first national team by guiding his club Makarki to the championship of the Soute League. With the domestic season over, it is up to the players to coalesce under Manager Jez into one unit: the Soute National Team.

First Team and Tactics
Image
Jim Reid focuses on a tight-knit 4-1-4-1 formation, two solid banks of four glued together by Alweather's harsh taskmastery. The defence is strong and tight, the central midfield combining physicality and technique with the wingers the main creative outlets. Up front, the striker must forge something of a lonely path, pressing from the front and holding up the ball for support. It's a physically uncompromising, dour side. When they need to chase a match, Carrick can be thrown on as a poacher up front in a 4-4-2.

Staff
Manager - Jim Reid (PCR) - Age 50
Asst. Manager - Colm Beckwith - Age 47

Jim Reid was the backbone behind the inexplicably successful Port Christopher national football team for years, a former striker who based his success on a simple, disciplined approach. He built his sides from the back, made sure everyone knew what they had to do and then pumped them up to a point where they'd run through walls, walk over coal and, more literally, form micronations for him. Perhaps the least glamorous manager in the world; perhaps the best. Colm Beckwith, the incumbent assistant manager, has kept his place, and is thought of as a keen, progressive sort.

Goalkeepers
Core
1 - GK - Mathis Woodgate (Image Spartangrad) - Age 35 - 166 caps, 66 clean sheets
A world-class pure shot-stopper, reliable and solid. Has had something of a nomadic club career, playing in five nations, but his class has never been in doubt. Said he'd internationally retire after the World Cup. He hasn't. A nation is grateful.

12 - GK - Rostyn Calhoun (Image Wexax United) - Age 28 - 17 caps, 11 clean sheets
While still prone to the occasional howler, Calhoun is a big, acrobatic lad who has largely impressed for the national team. In true Brenecian fashion, he's been something of a journeyman.

20 - GK - Aidan Hartigan (Image Metropolis Alligators) - Age 29 - 5 caps, 2 clean sheets
Has recovered from having too many hopes around his shoulders to become a redoubtable shot-stopper. Tall, athletic and quick-footed.

Defenders
2 - RB - Brun Carrack (Image Bengtsmark IF) - Age 28 - 51 caps
Elegant and willowy, Carrack's a defender first and foremost. Good all around, but her anticipation usually puts her in the right place at the right time.

3 - LB - Gethin Quill (Image Revolutionaries) - Age 27 - 44 caps
Short and stocky, Quill's a quick, powerful runner and isn't afraid to show a little muscle defending his corner. A dirty street-fighter with the technique to back it up, exactly the kind of player everyone hates but secretly wants on their team. When Revolutionaries plucked him from obscurity, as he was cast aside in the aftermath of Union's disgrace, their fans were understandably sceptical. He won them over, fast.

5 - CB - Cheney Heneghan (Image Ernesse Stahl) - Age 28 - 42 caps
A big, brawny defender, a man's man, all action all the time. Strong and tough comes standard for centre-halves, but fast is a nice boost on top of that. Just don't ask him to play the ball out.

6 - CB - Niko Szubanski (Image 1830 Cathair, c) - Age 31 - 64 caps, 3 goals
Szubanski's main asset is his physicality. Not just tall and strong, but fast for a centre-half, with a penchant for sliding challenges. Just a defender's defender, proven at the highest level.

18 - RB - Keziah Broxham (Image Mallox) - Age 21 - 2 caps
Broxham is not the nicest defender in the world. She's short, sharp, quick and decisive in her movements. If you don't mind a fair bit of needle in the tackle, and even off the ball, the lippy rightback's one of the most promising out there.

19 - LB - Morwen Prentice (Image Westpike United) - Age 20 - 5 caps
A lean, elegant fullback, comfortable with the ball at her feet. Still young and lacking experience at the top level, but her confidence and technique will take her far if she can sharpen up defensively.

22 - CB - Garwyn Varney (Image Soldarian FC) - Age 27 - 21 caps
Raw power, physicality and unbridled Brenecian sexual energy. Still a little clumsy and prone to bundling people over, but he's shed some of his coltishness with experience abroad.

Midfielders
4 - DM - Roisin Staunton (Image Kingsgrove) - Age 26 - 2 caps
It's hard to step into national legend Catherine Gryphon's shoes, but Staunton has the attitude for it. A media-friendly model professional who runs one of the A-League's most active social media accounts, all without a PR guy. She's a quietly very capable screening midfielder, good in all aspects of the position.

7 - RM - Brae Crowther (Image Chenoworth Harriers) - Age 25 - 46 caps, 11 goals
Crowther is lightning-quick and cocky to a fault, always trying to make the difference on her own, and needs to be knocked down a peg. Sure, she's brash and arrogant both on and off the pitch, but it's that level of confidence that means she never goes missing on the pitch - and it never comes at the cost of the team.

8 - CM - Meghan Hartsdown (Image King's Park) - Age 27 - 51 caps, 8 goals
A tall, elegant playmaker-in-making, with a strong sense of team spirit and an optimistic nature lending itself to spraying Hollywood passes down the flanks. Fortunately, that instinct's been curtailed in recent seasons - now she makes the right pass more often than not.

11 - LM - Tiferet Ashbrown (Image Kings Park) - Age 27 - 35 caps, 8 goals
A quick-running, quick-thinking winger, whose reputation for flakiness and poor decision-making in the final third has evaporated after taking huge strides in the SPL. Now incisive rather than indecisive.

13 - CM - Corby Wheeler (Image Goldstaff City) - Age 23 - 19 caps, 7 goals
A sharp, ambitious midfielder who is constantly darting in and about the danger zone. Has a great vision and a passing range that doesn't quite match it, and can fade out of games, but as a mercurial game-changer she's without equal in the side.

14 - CM - Claire Ruskin (Image Southern Star) - Age 23 - 7 caps, 2 goals
A sturdy, tough-skinned box-to-box midfielder. Ruskin's not the sort to take a backward step either on or off the pitch, and while she can sometimes get tunnel vision for the goal - which is bad, she can't shoot for beans - she tends to get the basics right. Maybe not the sort of player whose positive contributions are remembered by a neutral.

15 - RM - Cu Roi Garrard (Image Rene Skae) - Age 24 - 17 caps, 4 goals
A pure athlete, inclined to be direct in approach. A forceful winger who excels bearing down on fullbacks, far more sledgehammer than rapier. Surprisingly, despite his serious case of white line fever, an extremely friendly face off the pitch.

16 - LM - Cathal Keynes (Image Snowden River) - Age 23 - 2 caps
Tall, strong and powerful, Keynes probably looks more like a striker, but that loping stride masks a deceptive pace. Has steadily mastered a low, flat cross, and is even getting an eye for goal.

21 - CM - Falcon Case (Image Goodfeather FC) - Age 25 - 21 caps, 5 goals
A classy technical midfielder, but Case can back it up with traditional Nepharim muscle, largely because he is Nepharim and only qualifies through ancestry. Tends to leave his mark on games, and boasts a thumping shot.

23 - DM - Catsidhe Alweather (Image Eastal Lunar) - Age 26 - 40 caps
Alweather is definitely a player who has grown in stature over the past few years. Granted, her distribution is... uncomplicated. But she's an utterly ferocious defensive midfield terrier, something of a mouthy git, and with a penchant for flying into sliding tackles that catch more ball than man. She shuts matches down.

Forwards
9 - ST - Griffin Riordan (Image Klyde) - Age 26 - 39 caps, 18 goals
Riordan is burning with ambition, loves scoring goals and doesn't care who she has to shove to the ground to get it in the net. She became something of a hero during the World Cup, not so much for her ability - she was very clearly out of her depth at the business end of the tournament - but for her relentless determination and her refusal to be stopped. Ever.

10 - ST - Vesuvia Carrick (Image South Laithland) - Age 25 - 8 caps, 4 goals
Nepharim by birth and culture, Brenecian by grandfather, Carrick's a crisp poacher who can find the bottom corner from seemingly any angle when she's on song, with great arcing far-post runs to slip through tiring defences.

17 - ST - Niall Bremner (Image Westpike United) - Age 23 - 4 caps
A promising striker lacking any real subtlety. Tall, strong, fast and ruthless, preferring to lamp the ball powerfully into the net at any opportunity. This works out great at A-League level, but needs to add more strings to his bow.

ROSTER

FILINDOSTAN
National Football Team
Campionato Esportiva 22

The Filindostan Football Federation is pleased to present the Filindostan National football team, to compete in the 22nd Campionato Esportiva to be hosted in Damukuni and The Golden Lotus. The 66th Baptism of Fire champions had almost added a second trophy on their cabinet in the previous Campionato, but were prevented from doing so by the Hinodejins, losing 4-5 in a dreaded penalty shootout. However, the Pula Garudas showed a strong performance in the tournament, having almost a perfect tournament, winning nine of ten games, including twice over former regional champions Buyan, and payback wins over Tumbra and Mattijana, two teams the Filindostani lost to at the previous Campionato. They came up short once again in the qualifying campaign but they reached the quarterfinals in the 72nd Cup of Harmony.

With Twilight Striker's first Campionato tournament on the horizon, she hopes that she can bring the second silverware of the national team.

About the Filindostan Football Federation

The Filindostan Football Federation (FFF) was founded after they split from the Filindostani National Sports Commission (FNSC), citing the FNSC's tainted image during the Multiverse Boxing.ccanization boxing tournament and the budget cut the agency suffered. The newly-established federation caters to the nation's footballing affairs and sanctions the selection of the senior, under-21 and under-15 squads. The FNSC will remain the agency for fielding other national football teams that are not sanctioned by the FFF.

The FFF's headquarters are located in San Marco, Filindostan, and is headed by Estrelitta "Estie" Barzagia.

Playing Squad

In Filindostan, people are often called by their nickname. Some players opt to put their nickname instead of the customary last name in their kits. The shirt names for the squad are noted by ALL CAPS. So for example, Alexander Jampang's shirt name in his kit is ALEX JAMPANG. Likewise Antonio Rafael Vera will have his kit name as TONYO.

The following players are called up into the national team for the tournament.

Goalkeepers

1 | GK | Gerry Nafari "GERRY" Nasution | M | 29 | Image Perokojak Kota Jakulta
32 | GK | ABRAM Jampang | M | 29 | Image Venividicci
91 | GK | Antonio Rafael "TONYO" Vera | M | 23 | Image Fortunas

Gerry is the most experienced of the goalkeeper pool and will most likely get the starting nod in the opening game for the Pula Garuda. Should he have a dip in form or concede too many goals for Willy's liking or should they face a low-ranked team, it will most likely be Abram who will take the reins. Albeit with cat-like reflexes, his ball delivery needs improvement and might most likely to allow opposing strikers to intercept the deliveries he make. Tonyo, being the youngest keeper, is good at reading the game, however, his lack of command to his defenders, unless your defender is the Empress herself, has undermined his reputation at times.

Left/Rightbacks

2 | LB | Eliza Maria Milagros "MILA" KHALIFA | F | 28 | Image Venividicci
3 | LCB | CASIMIR Likumahuwa | M | 26 | Image Fortunas
17 | RB | Leona Stella Marie "LEOMARIE" Ipac | F | 26 | Image Fortunas
68 | RB | Remus Graci "GRACI" Tessin | M | 23 | Image Venividicci

Mila Khalifa proved that she can be a reliable left back during her stint in Venividicci and the national team. She can cover flanks quickly and can provide much needed wing support when the left winger runs deep at left flank. Casimir showed in the BoF that he is a serviceable left back, and his capability to play centerback in makeshift situations proves to be a plus for him. Graci has the pace to be a wingback, though he has not seen much time in the Pula Garuda shirt. Leomarie returns to the national team after an impressive outing with Fortunas domestically last season. Enzo's sending off at the Cup of Harmony meant that that was his last international match for the Pula Garudas, as he announced his international retirement two months after the tournament ended.

Centerbacks

4 | CB | Dina Nadya "DINA" SATYAWAN | F | 32 | Image Fortunas
27 | CB | KARTIO Weici | F | 21 | Image Tivali City
73 | CB | JOHNPAUL Arizala | M | 20 | Image Venividicci
88 | CB | Jeferson Martin "BUKNOY" Salcedo | M | 24 | Image Perotres Bandaroon

The "Filindostani Empress of Defense", captain and oldest player in the team, Dina Satyawan, will lead the centerbacks in the tournament. She will be partnered however not by Buknoy, but with experienced centerback Alex Jampang. Buknoy, which the Filindostani media has declared the weakest link of the team the last tournament they entered, will be backing up the two instead with promising youngster Kartio. Dina Satyawan has been very good at defense this season for Fortunas, and while she picks up yellow cards now and then (due to professional fouls), she's been making up with it with crucial game-saving tackles. Buknoy lacked what Alex Jampang can provide (A one big stud, and a key factor for centerbacks fighting for headers and joustling for ball possession. His headers are on point and sometimes very unpredictable - one time he can put deceiving spins in glancing headers, other times, he can drill the ball to the goal. His weakness is handling quick strikers due to his height and build) - but during his stint with Perotres, he can read the movements of the opposing player and make quick decisions about them. Nothing is noteworthy for Kartio at the moment, except that she has Under-21 experience, playing in the Di Bradini Cup for the young Pula Garuda, where some of her weaknesses were exposed - she didn't see much action in the tournament due to Willy preferring experienced players. She did make her first senior cap though against Northwest kalactin, after replacing Alex Jampang due to a caution. Johnpaul came from the youth ranks, playing in both Under-18 and Under-21, and had already made his international debut. His qualities resembled those of Alex, and with the Perouno defender aging and being less featured in the coach's matches, it was time for the change of guard in defense.

Left/Right Midfielders

48 | RM | Morty Muriel "MMM" Mescano | M | 23 | Image Perouno Bandarito
44 | LCM | DAMARIS Cambo | M | 25 | Image Eastern Stars
26 | RM | JUANDA Weici | F | 21 | Image Perokotyog Yogyakulta
90 | LM | HASNA Angela Aryanto | F | 21 | Image Fortunas

Damaris has proved that he can be a good left winger, delivering loads of dangerous crosses in the midfield. MMM has the torch passed on to him during the previous matches, proving his worth with his pace and defending, and dislodging Domo from the lineup. Twilight Striker put youth as emphasis in her wingers; she called up two young players, in Hasna and Juanda. Both played well in the previous Di Bradini Cup, with the latter scoring a goal against Baker Park. Hasna returns to the national squad after having a forgettable time during the 20th Campionato at Mattijana. Her playing experience playing behind Zemira Zai and playing in numerous Di Bradini Cups has enabled her to return to the national team. Juanda meanwhile has put her work after being on loan and eventually moving to Yogyakulta, and her hard work paid off with an inclusion in the CE squad.

Central Midfielders

22 | CM | His Excellency "KING" Tisang | M | 28 | Image New Llama Capitals
28 | CM | Muhammad "MOHD" SAFRI | M | 22 | Image Venividicci
43 | CM | SIHARTO | M | 25 | Image Perotres Bandaroon
10 | CM | Manny Jacob Lou "YAKOB" Rivas | M | 26 | Image Tout-Puissant Outremont

King is a genius when taking set pieces and his passing has improved as the season goes along. His only downside? His short temper. He was banned two FFL games after a verbal spat with a referee for a non-call during a league match. He was sent off and banned fifteen competitive matches during Filindostan's win over Northwest kalactin. Mohd Safri will now have to play without depending on King for the first thirteen matches. He is good on his own though, reads opponents' movements quickly, and is like a sticker to the ball - he rarely loses it. Siharto meanwhile, is a serviceable power sub at central midfield. He is also inserted in case of a 4-5-1 or 3-5-2 formations. Manyakol is a sleek penalty taker and can run very fast in the center of the midfield. His weaknesses are his temper and can irritate most of the female players due to his sly behaviour off the pitch.

Forwards

9 | FW | Boris Choel "BOCHOG" San Lupe | M | 24 | Image Fortunas
15 | FW | INA Teterissa | F | 22 | Image Perokojak Kota Jakulta
55 | FW | BIENVENIDO Arespacochaga | M | 25 | Image Perokojak Kota Jakulta
19 | FW | Marish Luzanie "YISH" Sta. Lucia | F | 25 | Image Anomalies Football Club

Bochog had less-than-spectacular in the solo forward role for Pula Garuda in their matches, he now takes the support striker role to feed the balls to Bienvenido and help put rebounds to the back of the net. The attacking forward role will now go to Bienvenido, who torched defenses while playing in Perokojak Kota Jakulta. He will be a target man, and he's equipped with a powerful left foot. Yish grabbed many goals during the BoF and World Cup qualifying campaigns, and will most likely partner Bienvenido or Bochog in the starting lineup. Ina replaced the injured Fizzy in the lineup during the qualifiers and has been confirmed to be on the CoH squad.

Play Style
Image
Style Modifier: +2.201
The play style of the team is of a more attacking lineup, looking to score more goal scoring opportunities. The team usually utilize pacey wingers to deliver dangerous balls to the penalty box, usually during coordinated attacks.

Filindostani players are usually physical, especially the defenders. Cautions are mostly common due to their physical plays.

Kits
Image

Local kit supplier, No Nonsense, provides the kits for the Pula Garuda. The kits will be used until the World Cup 81 season. The home kits are clad in red and are usually paired with black shorts and white socks. For color clashes in shorts and socks, they use their all red kit. Their alternate kit is white, usually with red shorts and socks, but can be black shorts and white socks in case of color clashes. The goalie kit is all black (or in black shorts and socks), but in case of color clashes, a yellow version of the GK kit is available.

Team RP and Permissions
The below information will help teams RP against my team in case they RP first.

Fans
Filindostani fans are double-edged swords - sometimes they are most passionate fans in Filindostan, sometimes, they can be compared to the worst of internet trolls. Around five thousand diehard fans will travel to the host nation to watch their team play - but they usually bring their megaphones and flares with them - they somehow make it past the guards. Some fans are crazy enough to invade the pitch and cause match delays.

As the elections approach, the parties have appointed their official candidates. At this 2010 elections, there will be voting for the consul, the 7 state governors, the 4 federation leaders,7 of the 21 senators, all of the Chamber of Deputies and the Legislative Assemblies. And the consul will select the president of the republic.
The current government of Partido Latino Nacional (the party of the consul/president),currently is at a colligation with the Socialist Party, the Worker's Party, the Left-wing Capitalist Party, the GP/NEP and the Christian Socialist Party. The candidate supported by the current consul/president is Nacto Amúlio Aureliano of the same party;the party now is in colligation with the Worker's Party and the Chistian Socialist Party.Rog Carolus Ionescu from the Christian Capitalists runs colligated with the Left-wing Capitalist Party and the Right-wing Capitalist Party. The GP/NEP will run on its own with Natan Ion dos Santos. As will do Mikhail Ion Richardson from the Communist Party. The Nationalist Liberal Party and the National Centrist Party will have Lucas Estevo Rodrégues from the latter in a not-so common colligation. And finally Ion Mihai Constantinescu will represent the Socialist Party.
The elections will be the second change in the leader of a Natanian nation this year, since king Manuel Antônio of Natanians, king of the Kingdom of Northern Natanians abdicated. He is resposible for initiating domesic talks about joining the Common Rushmori Community, although no official indication has been given.
The consul and president Miguel Manuel Barbosa has had good approval ratings throughout his mandate,he was the responsible for putting into effect many important laws such as the regulation of new computer keyboards with Braille high-relief.He also was fast in sending help to South Covello after they got rid of LAG;although on a more economically-related diplomatic topic he didn't demonstrate much interest in joining the Esportivan Union when it was being formed nor advanced in commercial negotiations with the quite-closed Cheetahs and reptiles Coalison.

Changing of the guard? Alex Jampang, Domo left out of Campionato squad

EAST TOWN, DAMUKUNI - Is it the start of the changing of the guard?

Equestrian coach Twilight Striker has decided to leave two of the most influential players in the Filindostani squad. Few eyebrows were raised when the final squad that will be taking part in the 22nd Campionato Esportiva was released, with the most notable omission being Domo and Alex Jampang. The manager, who brought stability to the squad and delivered a quarterfinal finish in the recently-concluded Cup of Harmony, had opted for youth by calling up Johnpaul and Juanda instead, both impressing for coach Berna in the last Di Bradini Cup, where, inevitably, another group stage exit hampered the development of the young'uns.

The same three keepers, the four wing-backs, and the central midfield and forwards from the Cup of Harmony in Vilita and Turori were retained, with Twilight Striker deciding to relieve Alex Jampang with Johnpaul Arizala from Venividicci, and Domo Delos Santos-Strauss and Zemira Zai were both dropped in favor of Juanda Weici and Hasna Aryanto, the former being the twin sister to Kartio Weici, and Hasna returning to the squad after a long absence. The squad will be captained by the ever-present Dina Satyawan, who hinted at a possible early retirement from international football in the squad's interview prior to their departure for the tournament.

With the average age of the squad being 24.70, this is one of the youngest Filindostani squads ever brought to at least a major regional tournament. Pundits believe that the youthful squad can help the Pula Garudas in their World Cup qualifying campaign, with the two omitted players possibly taking part on an expected 30-player squad for their campaign. Their quest for their first Campionato will start in a match against Kernovi and Rewgwlas in a group which the Filindostanis are expected to win.

VfR Steinigestrasse's Gergary National Team to make Campionato Esportiva debut

INGBERT-BORBELY - The delegation of Gergarian footballers have departed from the Ingbert-Borbely International Airport (IBIA) to Damukuni for their debut Campionato Esportiva campaign.

The delegation, which included eight players from VfR Steinigestrasse, six from recent league champions Balogsi ETO, and a host of other notable Gergarian players, joined and selected by coach Heidemarie Frost, arrived at the airport at around 2 PM local time, and boarded a charter LuftSolymok flight to Damukuni, along with some members from the media and the government with Chancellor Domonkos Virag.

We at the Tagebuch were disappointed that we were not able to send one representative to Damukuni. But that is life, carry on. As usual, we'll bring you the latest from the tournament though our information seems to be second-hand info.

Soute Report

DAMUKUNI - Anticipation is running high as the Soute National Team charges on into their first international competition. Due to their complete lack of experience, speculation among Soutean fans has run rampant as to how the freshman nation will perform. Without any previous matches, not even a friendly, the national team and national fans are going into this tournament blind. Betting markets have fluctuated wildly, and so have discussions among family at the dinner table. If the rumors are to believed, either Soute will steamroll all other opposition (because they are *Soute*) or the national team will fail spectacularly due to the lack of any previous experience. Manager Jez has himself expressed caution in the handful of press meetings hosted by the national team. Jez said he was very happy with the squad, saying it contained the "best and brightest" of Soute, but he also stated that Soute was brand new and likely unprepared. Nations build their programs after decades of experience and competition, so, in the words of Jez, "humble results" should be expected in their first tournament.

The tournament that Soute will enter the world stage on is the Campionato Esportiva. The regional competition is held every four years opposite the World Cup. The other competitors are comprised of Soute's regional neighbors. Thus far they have been most welcoming of Soute into the international footballing community. This being the 22nd edition of the Campionato Esportiva, there have been many previous tournaments and most nations Soute will face will have a good deal of experience. Kita-Hinode was the last winner of the competition, the CE 21, while South Covello is currently ranked number one in the regional rankings. These two nations are the favorites to win the cup, and one should add Brenecia, Super-Llamaland, and Filindostan as nations that have a fair chance to win as well. While formats change from edition to edition, this Campionato will feature a five match group stage, with there being four groups of six. The top four nations of each group will advance to the Round of Sixteen, and from there it's the standard system of knockouts until a champion steps out of the dust.

Soute was placed in the sixth and lowest pot for the group. A few fans were hurt at what was interpreted as a snub on Soutean talent, but pots are determined by rank and not pride. However, they are also determined by alphabetical order in the case of freshman competitors, so for this tournament there isn't much difference in rank between the fourth, fifth, and sixth pots. After the group draw, the Soute National Team learned they were the last team added to Group B. While there is little experience to compare to, it looks to be a challenging group, though any group is challenging for the unranked. The group is led by (2) Brenecia, three time champions (XIV, XVII, XIX) of the Campianito. They are the favorites of the group and even a favorite of the tournament, especially considering the Brenecian side is coming off of a spectacular World Cup 80 championship. However, (4) Super-Llamaland isn't too far behind them, and the brief spat of neutral games in the group stage could produce a not too unlikely result of the former champions (XX) at the top of Group B. Third and fourth position is occupied by the very closely ranked nations of (17) Natanians and Nosts (one nation) and (18) Copper Cuprum. Any one of them can finish third, but it is the hope of Soute that one of them will have a bad run and open up the fourth position to the national team. Unranked Gergary and unranked Soute finish up the group. It will be a hard task to break into the fourth position, but these two nations could get an upset or two that sends them to the Round of Sixteen.

It is, of course, the hope of Soute that they are the unranked nation to peak through into the next round. While at first it seemed odd that two thirds of the group would move on to the knock-outs, it has turned out to be a special gift for the inexperienced Soute side. The fourth position at the end of the group stage is an attainable goal. It may be too much to ask for, but the Soute team could reach the knockouts on their first competition. However, should things go as they have been seeded, the Soute team will still gain valuable experience playing against two title-holders, one of which is a World Cup Champion, and against two respectable mid-ranked teams, not to mention the other similarly unranked compadre. Regardless of results, Soute marches onto the pitch for the first time, and for all of Soute it is a spectacle to behold.

Soute Report

WEST BAY - Soute received a warm welcome to the world of international football, if by warm one means being immersed in a scalding vat of tar and by welcome one means being slaughtered like a meaningless cow in the the meat packing industry. Colorful commentary aside, the Soute National Team received a rude awakening last evening in the Twinkle Park Indoor Events Centre. Do not let names deceive, for a stadium with the name Twinkle Park was the venue for a crushing, yet by no means unexpected, four goals to none loss to Brenecia. While this result was expected on paper, seeing it on paper and seeing on the pitch is a different matter. Soute was obviously expected to lose against the reining World Cup Champions, but it is another to see them shut out four-nil in their very first international play. However, the silver lining is that Soute will never again go into a match so woeful unprepared and confused. The national team has effectively received its baptism of fire months before its true Baptism of Fire.

To the match itself, it was a travesty for Soute right from the start. Brenecia and Soute had roughly similar play styles, with Brenecia sporting a 4-1-4-1 and Soute sticking to the 4-4-2, meaning both sides were slightly defensive in play. Of course, the difference between the two was that the former had vastly more experience and skill than the latter, and this manifested itself early. The Souteans were hazy at the start of the game. They were slow on the ball and made mistakes while passing. Either they were truly that dull and unprepared or they were incredibly nervous that they were finally playing a match on the pitch of an international tournament. Brenecia was smart and clinical. The game had barely begun as midfielder Wheeler thread a leading pass to the left winger. Ashbrown had the space and slotted in a beautiful goal past Teodor Król. Brenecia was already ahead in the eighth minute and they kept on rolling. Leftback Ząbek was slow on his mark and the eagle-eyed Alweather pressed the advantage with a medium pass to Crowther. The right winger beat the backpedaling Kedzierski and stuffed in another goal on the fumbling goalkeeper. There would be little time to rest as just two minutes later the Brenecian striker joined the scoring party. Rightback Róg broke up an opportunity, but he fumbled the clearance. Brenecian midfielder Case swept in for the shot, but Król was able to fend it off with a weak deflection. The ball went straight to Riardon who tapped the ball in to make it 3-0 after nineteen minutes of play.

Soute was stunned and heading full long into the worse projections for the match. After giving up three goals, they finally got their legs under them and got a few possessions going. Paszek and Gajos rallied the team at the midfield and as a result Soute finally managed a series of attacking runs. Edmund Król received an opportunity in front of the box, but it was cut short by a rough tackle from Szubanski. It was a questionable decision, but the towering defender was given a yellow card for the action in the thirtieth minute. The Brenecians protested some, but their anger was soothed by the fact they were up by three goals, and five minutes later they would go up another. Ashbrown would again add a goal for her side after releasing a well-designed shot from her wing. Król appeared to be able to handle it, but the shot had a curve to it that put him out of place and unable to stop the momentum of the ball as it thundered into the net. By this point manager Jez was furious and saddened with his teams performance. Unwilling to even wait for the end of the half, Jez yanked Teodor Król off the pith in the forty-second minute and threw Łucjan Ostrowski into the goalkeeping position. Soute limped to the half with a scoreline of 4-0 against them.

Going into the second half it was clear Soute was going to lose. It wasn't a matter of if they would lose, but by how much, and increasingly it seemed it would be towards the end of an absolute drubbing. Striker Edmund Król was taken off in favor of Jerzey Budney. Brenecia signaled they were going to lay off in the second half as they rested two starters in a halftime change. Knowing they had the victory, Brenecia held back at gave Soute some dignity. A 0-4 loss was emotionally better than 0-8 loss, and Brenecia had the win they wanted: decisive with a large boost in goal differential. Soute managed some more attacks, but most of them petered out. It became a game of possession in the midfield, and Soute struggled with the smart, tactical play of the Brenecians. The minutes ticked by on the clock, and it was clear Soute wasn't even going to score their first international goal. Right midfielder Gajos had the best chance of the night, a strong strike from the top of the box. It found its way through the tangle of attackers and defenders, but Woodgate demonstrated his world class ability by tracking it through the crowd and smothering it. A beleaguered Wyrzykowski was taken off the pitch, bone tired, and Alfons Sokołowski replaced him in the eightieth minute at the centerback position. The day was Brenecia's, the match ending as it had in the first half, four goals to zero. Soute had failed to score a single goal, but they had also avoided any injuries and didn't receive any cards, though health and fair play doesn't get you table points.

“5…4…3” The producer counted down, as the motion in the studio froze to a laser-like focus on the two figures sitting at other ends of a dimly lit desk - with a monitor displaying the flag of a united Kernovi and overshadowing the figures. The only sound at this point being a small jingle, the theme music to the popular Kernovian sports show KRV Sports Now – the chosen host for an exclusive collection of live interviews with sports personalities to commemorate the first international sporting event fronted by a united Kernovian team. This was one of the most gratifying moments for the figures. The territory of Kernovi and Rewgwlas had been divided in some capacity for nearly three centuries, until the horrors of an authoritarian past allowed the people to realise the dream of a future built upon peace and unity – and now these two people were taking their own turn as the countries ambassadors to the world.

The theme music beat to an end and the figure on the left began to speak.

“Hello and thank you for tuning into the first of a series of very special episodes of KRV Sports Now. Im Guto Cohen and my guest today are the esteemed Enyon Bosdennis, former Kevardhu Palace midfield superstar and the current manager of the first ever United Team, featuring key talent from across Kernovi, Swyftlandre-Asisi and Rewgwlas.”

Cohen and Bosdennis had previously shared a coloured rivalry – having both grown up in Kayanewl, Kernovi and Rewgwlas’ joint-capital city alongside Isca (and during the Dasserkenedhlek period – home of the Government in Exile), football was a brief respite from the naval blockades and food shortages following from the so-called Salmon Siege. In better times, the two were both scouted for their talent, with Bosdennis going to Rewgwlas footballing giants Kevardhu Palace and Cohen playing defence for Keveradhu Palace’s greatest rival, the Abersalvi Snow Leopards. That history still flavoured their relationship, making the meeting all the more special for the pair.

After having made their introductory niceties, Cohen continued,
“So first I’d like to talk about the united team’s record so far – take a look at this.”

The image of the flag buzzed away and the image changed to footage of Avenhelm Castle, a football stadium in the Swyftlandian City of Mên-a-Gwydngala. The United Team had only played two international games at this point. The first, an invitational (by royal decree, no less) against allies Apox, carried high significance in Kernovi and Rewgwlas precisely for its symbolism of the united nation. The first highlight showed a goal in the twenty-first minute by an Apoxian striker, followed by highlights of a struggling United Team in the first half and a legendary save by the United Team’s goalkeeper in the closing seconds of injury time. The second half showed what the United Team could be. Like a phoenix from the ashes, the United Team came back with a vengeance. Divided, the constituent teams had already shone brightly and created unforgettable moments in the nation. Indeed, the memory of a Kernovi victory against Turori still acted as a benchmark for what the United Team could truly achieve. And indeed, in that moment they had shone again – a key substitution in the 70th minute had replaced Kyle Sen with Brithael pen Helroc – who threaded in a precarious diagonal shot past two Apoxian defenders, bouncing off the goal post and narrowly past the Apoxian goalkeeper.

The audience had exploded in that instance – pen Helroc was a national hero, he had scored the nations first ever goal and ensured a 1-1 draw against Apox.

This contrasted heavily with the opening matchday of the Campionato Esportiva against a competent Filindostani side at the Emerald Coast Resort Stadium. The music played in the background more sombre and the action slower. This was, by all accounts, a vicious dismantling of a hopeful United Team by the Group Favourites which had perhaps dragged the players back to realistic expectations for the remainder of the tournament.

But it was more than a loss to a top tier team, it was embarrassing. Not for the loss, but for the events of the 86th minute. The number #3 shirt, pen Helroc, had once again found an opportunity to shine. But just as quickly as the moment presented itself, it was gone. It had been a mere second of indecision which closed the open goal, replaced with the foreboding figure of Filindostani captain and revered “Empress of Defence” Dina Satyawan who challenged pen Helroc all the way past the goal line, returning the ball to the goalkeeper he could have thwarted mere seconds before. And in that moment, the nation’s understanding disappointment with the missed moment had turned to disappointment with their star player – as pen Helroc, overcome with frustration, spat in the face of the Filindostani captain, being rewarded a red card for his trouble.

A proud team, celebrating the heritage of a newly-united land, had in a moment been dowsed in a searing national shame. These were, for all intents and purposes, their delegates to the world and the most revered of them all had let them down. And with that the sizzle reel ended, but not before the voice of the announcer declared,
“Filindostani three, Kernovi and Rewglwas nil”

The cameras panned back to the studio.

(OOC and general reminder to self: Probably dont have time to finish this - so going to be part 2, being the actual interview, focusing on reactions to the pen Helroc incident and Bosdennis' experience's in Occupied Rewgwlas during the next match day)
