[SUBMITTED] For Want Of A Horseshoe

Postby Singapore no2 » Mon Jan 15, 2018 5:05 am

Also known as《Debate About The Senate 2:
Election Boogaloo》

[desc] Taking advantage of the divided and uncoordinated parliament, an unlikely coalition of fascist demagogues and communist rabble-rousers, calling themselves the Horseshoe Alliance, managed to pass a seemingly innocent bill that effectively dissolves democracy through a constitutional amendment. Horrified political leaders are calling for something to be done to stop the resolution.

[validity] only valid for democratic nations with no senate

[option] "We must bring back the senate!" insists @@RANDOMNAME@@, the Chairperson of the Authoritarian Democrats, who is coincidentally a former senator. "The outwardly innocuous bill that was passed grants the Horseshoe Alliance the power to dissolve all other political parties and ban elections. As desperate times call for desperate measures, we have no choice but to carefully select a team of qualified individuals - such as myself - to form a senate, in order to prevent a hostile takeover by totalitarian extremists. It may not be optimal, but it's still preferable to a psychotic dictatorship."
[effect] an unelected senate has been installed to 'save democracy'
[policy] a senate is installed

[option] "Forcing a council of unrepresentative tyrants upon the nation would make us no better than the Horseshoe Alliance," dismisses the First Member of the Inoffensive Centrist Party, uncharacteristically forming an opinion of @@HIS@@ own. "We cannot forsake our democratic ideals under any circumstances. The correct way to resolve the situation is to hold public referendums on bills that are considered to be controversial. At least, even if the outcome is an end to democracy, we can be certain that the will of the people is carried out."
[effect] time-consuming referendums are often used to stall bills that @@LEADER@@ personally dislikes

[option] "What's so bad about us taking over?" questions Joedolf Statler, the Supreme General Secretary of the Horseshoe Alliance, handing you a copy of their party manifesto. "We only have one goal, which is to free our glorious motherland from the shackles of non-@@DEMONYM@@ economic exploitation. @@LEADER@@, why don't you join our alliance and partake in the patriotic revolution of the oppressed majority? Your charisma and experience will be the key to our success!"
[effect] a dictatorship with a strange and inconsistent ideology has seized control of @@NAME@@
[policy] autocracy and socialism installed

The Horseshoe Alliance is a homage to the Horseshoe Effect.

The 2nd option speaker is a reference to the Neutral People of Futurama.

The 3rd option is a parody of National Bolshevism.

Very nice!

This is the sort of reinstate-upper-house issue I was looking for. Nice one.

Fair warning though, my next self-edit is probably this one:

Isn't there a constitution to prevent this from happening?

I feel that the additional information about the Horseshoe Alliance in Option 3 would be better if moved to the issue description, it just feels out of place after you’ve already established what the Horseshoe Alliance is.

Option 1- Just say “Senator” not “Senatorial Member”

I liked the references to NS categories, you seemed to kinda drop them. In option 2, you could’ve made it the Inoffensive Centrist Party or something- though I understand it’s a reference and you may not want to change it. In the third, you might have an offhand comment about “not being a corrupt dictatorship” or something.
The (Dis)Honorable Benedict Corwin, Fauxian ambassador to the globalist bureaucracy that shall not be named.
Speaker of the Assembly, Deputy Officer of WA Affairs in the Rejected Realms. Warden in The Order of the Grey Wardens. Author of Issues #872, #909, #915, and #927.
Not the similarly named Feux.

Done.

I think that would detract from the narrative.

Yes, the New York Times Democrats support this as a submission. Good luck.
