Harassment also varies widely by community. I've heard some real horror stories about League, for instance, regardless of gender for example. Heard a lot less about it for HotS in comparison within the same overall genre. Some communities actually police user conduct really well to put a lid on the gender-driven harassment, others don't. If more did, you'd likely see more women comfortable outing themselves as such.

It's a major pet peeve of mine for fantasy fans to accept dragons, but a society where women have to be afraid of rape? "Too unrealistic".

And the idea of applying 1950s sexism to earlier time periods is another one, I'm quite passionate about studying history, and wish that the study of it gets overhauled in primary school to actually make it more engaging.

While it's mostly about the different social classes of England and Normandy during the period, and he has been rightfully criticized for being too down on knights, I think Medieval Lives by Terry Jones is a very nice introduction to the period and does go into a bit about how women are viewed and are expected to behave.

And yes, it's that Terry Jones of Monty Python fame, so the writing is very easy to get into and quite funny even if you're not into the typical Monty Python humor.

I don't object to the character being there, I object to them not showing any reason why they believe such.
People don't live in a vacuum and I'd like to see why they believe contrary to their surroundings.

Because there is a persistent stereotype that "gaming" is strictly a (young) male hobby despite substantial evidence pointing out the obvious. (That is, "gamers" are of both genders, and the hobby is not strictly dominated by children and teens.) Coupled by a wide variety of reasons for women not to identify themselves as such when playing games online, it just furthers the misconception that there are not many women playing these types of games.

I've seen during several matches women getting harassed mid game once their gender was known.

Probably a cause of the aforementioned phenomena.

Then again, in MMORPGs, I basically always play female characters despite being a guy. I get lots of free stuff and random help that way.
