It's probably one of the reasons I've stayed away from it. Instead I play against bots, or the quirky modes like ARAM.

They tell vets their loadouts are unrealistic? That's blind stupid.

I should try on the internet to pretend I'm a female and then when I get flak for it, come out as a man.
Should give some laughter.
Harassment also varies widely by community. I've heard some real horror stories about League, for instance, regardless of gender for example. Heard a lot less about it for HotS in comparison within the same overall genre. Some communities actually police user conduct really well to put a lid on the gender-driven harassment, others don't. If more did, you'd likely see more women comfortable outing themselves as such.

They act smug, but if they did anything like what I did when I was younger, they'd bitch and moan about raking leaves being too hard and add something about "normies" under their breath. I'm nineteen in a week and this is the shit younger kids do.

It's a major pet peeve of mine for fantasy fans to accept dragons, but a society where women have to be afraid of rape? "Too unrealistic".
And the idea of applying 1950s sexism to earlier time periods is another one, I'm quite passionate about studying history, and wish that the study of it gets overhauled in primary school to actually make it more engaging.
While it's mostly about the different social classes of England and Normandy during the period, and he has been rightfully criticized for being too down on knights, I think Medieval Lives by Terry Jones is a very nice introduction to the period and does go into a bit about how women are viewed and are expected to behave.
And yes, it's that Terry Jones of Monty Python fame, so the writing is very easy to get into and quite funny even if you're not into the typical Monty Python humor.
For some reason it's always bugged the crap out of me when a character in ancient or medieval setting or even a fantasy setting has views that are ridiciously progressive for their time and the show makes no attempt to explain why they hold these views.
The Robin Hood film with Russel Crowe portrays the character as someone who believes in democracy and government by the people....during the time of the 1st Crusade.
Yeah okay then.

I <3 the ESA's yearly stats report. The gender stats over the past several years have been fairly consistently above 40% of the total gameplaying population, occasionally trending pretty damn close to an even 50/50 split. ^_^

Personally I suspect League is worse due in some part to it being such a large, popular e-sport. Some take it a lot more serious as a result.

If it's just one character, then why not? When I was afloat in the 1860s, we had people whose views would be moderately progressive even by modern standards. They just were outnumbered by the people with more conservative views.

(That is, "gamers" are of both genders, and the hobby is not strictly dominated by children and teens.) Coupled by a wide variety of reasons for women not to identify themselves as such when playing games online, it just furthers the misconception that there are not many women playing these types of games.
I think this has a lot to do with personal experiences which the average person takes as credible instead of actual studies, combined with another factor:
A lot of women pretend to be men when gaming online.

I know I do, but then most people think I am male when I talk on internet forums.

Probably a cause of the aforementioned phenomena.
Then again, in MMORPGs, I basically always play female characters despite being a guy. I get lots of free stuff and random help that way.
