I saw Apollo 18 against the advice of many a review and even some acquaintances. I love the space race and love fiction about space race, especially secret missions and lost cosmonauts. In my opinion it's a very underexplored sub-genre in popular entertainment media. Oh sure there've been a few video games like Battlezone (to date one of the only FPS/RTS games I know of), a few books like the Lunar Option, a smattering of shorts published in Analog, even a couple of movies like First on the Moon but it just doesn't get the same level of attention as other sub-genres like Vietnam or bank robberies. For this reason I figured I had to take what I could get even if it was Blair Witch Project on the moon.
After seeing it I can say that the biggest misstep of the film was revealing the monsters.
Objects moving when no one is around or looking at them? Good.
Flag getting knocked down in the radiation-bathed vacuum of space? Great.
Astronaut getting dragged into a shaded crater by an unseen something? Awesome.
Moon rocks are really moon spiders? What the fuck were you guys smoking?
The second biggest flaw was the editing. It's something I saw a lot of the reviews harping on and it's sad to say that they are spot on about it being disjointed and the camerawork poor. This was one of the biggest problems with the BWP and pretty much every "found footage" film since. It's also difficult to fix because correcting it too much kills the audiences suspension of disbelief.
The third biggest flaw was sound. The surface of the moon is a vacuum. Not only did adding sound kill my suspension of disbelief but I think that silence would have been a lot better in building suspense in several scenes.
Even with all of its problems they at least took some time to research the material for this mockumentary and the sets, costumes, and ship and flight effects looked good.
