No dominant teams this year; the field has evened up quite a bit this season. Janwick seems to be the favorite, winning the Citiz Urban for the second straight year and posting the best record in the country. Chase Tech looked like championship material during the regular season, but a two-point defeat in the Eastern tournament final has them trying to regain their feet again. The defending national champion, Iona, lost several seniors and slipped quite a bit; losing by a single point to Astodon in the conference tournament was a major blow, and now they'll have to settle for the eighteenth seed and a potential date with number two Coastal Citiz in the second round. That's only if they can get through Bartewick National, one of the country's hottest teams, who steamrolled through the Big Northwest conference tournament. Pundits are saying the best upset opportunity belongs to Portsdan; they only barely squeaked into the CCBA, but now that they're here they have the talent to make a run.

First Round
16Levin 71–98 17Mcvirason
9Westermere Agricultural 78–67 24Portsdan
13Oldfield Grafalee 81–77 20NPI
12Ecoduo 94–61 21Johnstone
11New Athens Dominion 76–70 22Chester
14Southwestern 71–78 19Mark Daniel
10Choral-Daipa 65–88 23Topher
15Bartewick National 66–73 18Iona

The popular Gaels managed to advance, though it wasn't until the final minutes of the second half that they put away their game with Bartewick National. They must now take on the powerhouse Coastal Citiz, which will definitely be the most-viewed match of the next round. Johnstone, on the up after winning the Modraine tournament by upsetting Regal Heart, was absolutely demolished by Ecoduo, quite an embarrassment indeed. Levin also suffered a tough loss, losing by 27 to Mcvirason. Former NSCAA participants New Athens Dominion and Mark Daniel advanced.

Sweet Sixteen
1Janwick 96–76 17Mcvirason
8Cougar 94–93 9Westermere Agricultural
4Kirant 78–64 13Oldfield Grafalee
5Regal Heart 77–57 12Ecoduo
6WEU 65–75 11New Athens Dominion
3Chase Tech 69–66 19Mark Daniel
7Astodon 66–74 23Topher
2Coastal Citiz 67–79 18Iona

One major surprise and one that's not so shocking. Astodon, defending CCBA finalists and one of the top teams in the world by the last NSCAA, was shocked by little-known Topher University. In the same region, Coastal Citiz faced the same downfall as it did last season when Iona defeated them in the semifinals. This time, it wasn't really a close game, as Iona dominated the second half and won by a comfortable twelve points. The clear consensus is that Iona now has an easy road to the Final Four. They may have to face Chase Tech, their conference rival who has looked so strong all season. They struggled with Mark Daniel, but pundits believe that was just a small hiccup, and that eleventh-seed New Athens Dominion, which pulled off the upset over the Prairie dominators, won't provide much trouble.

Elite Eight
1Janwick 82–78 8Cougar
4Kirant 73–74 5Regal Heart
11New Athens Dominion 86–79 3Chase Tech
23Topher 75–82 18Iona

Chase Tech has probably been the best team all season. So their loss to New Athens Dominion is pretty shocking. If anything, it makes Janwick the definite favorite from here on out. Kirant has been a little under the radar, overshadowed by their conference rival Janwick, but the NSCAA semifinalist suffered a heartbreaking loss at the hands of Regal Heart, who has recovered well from their conference tournament final defeat. Topher gave Iona a better game than most expected, but Iona is back in the Final Four for the second straight year.

Final Four
1Janwick 74–56 5Regal Heart
11New Athens Dominion 84–72 18Iona

Iona's run has finally ended, a lot later than most thought, and due to an expected opponent. Though the Gaels won't be defending their CCBA championship, credit must be given for defeating some top teams (including #2 Coastal Citiz) en route to another Final Four appearance. New Athens Dominion's performance is reminiscent of thirteenth-seed Astodon's cinderella run to the final last year. Much of this success can be attributed to senior Reynold Wakefield, whose 23 ppg is second-most in the country, and has guided the Dominion to an 80.25 ppg average through this tournament. On the other side, Janwick unsurprisingly defeated Regal Heart for a shot at the CCBA title. The Tigers are more popularly known for their dominance in amfootball, but now they're getting a chance to shine in another major sport, too.

National Championship
1Janwick 84–76 11New Athens Dominion

Janwick has validated its top seed and claimed maybe the biggest prize in collegiate sports: a CCBA Championship.

The second edition of the Citiz Open has finally rolled around, and the hype could not be greater for the world's most prestigious tennis tournament. Only one man can call himself a Grand Slam champion, but 95 other players are descending on the Bartewick Central Academy to change that. There are so many storylines to follow as international tennis reaches its peak.

Of course, the top story is the chances of the defending champion, Alfred Hamilton. He is perhaps the world's greatest tennis star: winner of the best match in history, winner of the first Grand Slam, winner of a World Team Tennis Cup - and perhaps, soon, winner of an Olympic gold medal. He's riding on high right now, having recently secured a berth in the Emberton semifinals, meaning he's likely to find his way to the podium. But as epic as a medal around his neck would be, Hamilton is raring to return to his homeland and feel his hands wrap around the glorious Citiz Open trophy once more.

That certainly isn't going to be easy, though. Hamilton debuted on the Citiz Championship Circuit at number two, but has slipped all the way to twelfth as he has reached the third round in each of the three Masters tournaments (Bartewick, Brevin, Blubay). Worse, he got a very challenging draw: a fourth-round showdown is gearing up with top seed Vittoria Panaro. Hamilton is thirty-four years old and will have played six Olympics matches when he takes a direct flight from Emberton to Krytenia; he'll need to win six more to reclaim the Citiz Open crown. And unlike last year's tournament, Hamilton will have to compete with the world's top females, who, instead of contesting their own section (won by Cassandra Christianson last year), will challenge the males. That means a much higher level of competition will await Hamilton - which he seems to have been struggling with given his results from the first half of the CCC season.

All in all, it will be very challenging, if not nigh-unto-impossible, for the Hamilton-defends-championship scenario to play out. Hamilton isn't even close to being the highest-seeded Citiz: five compatriots are seeded above him. The hottest, by far, is young Brandon Rodden, the twenty-three-year-old with the fastest serve in the game (his fastest serve has been clocked at 148 mph). He's claimed the last two CCC tournaments, including the Cygning Entry and the Blubay Masters. Rodden has been catapulted up to the third seed, and although he's been the tour's biggest surprise, he now comes into the Citiz Open as a favorite to win the title. Can Rodden handle the sudden success? Will he be able to defeat two popular veterans, Chelsea Farnell and Tate Birch, in the fourth round when the chips are down? Rodden's ability to keep his cool will be a highly-watched storyline throughout the tournament.

Whereas last year, the Citiz Open was contested as part of the defunct ITA, which was comprised of players from many nations, it is now running independently (although in conjunction with the CCC) - which means it is serving more like a national championship, with the vast majority of players holding Citiz citizenship. That said, quite a few of the top contestants are foreigners - including the top two seeds. Vittoria Panaro and Novak Dlouhy are accomplished Thatians - both winners of CCC Masters and ITA tournaments, both consistent top-five players. Also, all four participating Bergnovinaians are seeded above tenth - not least of them being Stanley Charles, the former world number one whose seventh seed belies the fact he reached the Citiz Open final last year. Other notables include Rob Djokic, the twentieth seed who is a rising star in Thatius despite being overshadowed by one or two others; and Pascale Martin, an unseeded Cotdelapomais who hasn't reached his full potential on the CCC but is considered one of the tournament's best upset hopes.

Giroux Rugby Club League

Giroux Rugby Club League Pld W L PF PA PD Pts

1 Reps-Baker 14 11 3 267 125 +142 44 Champions
2 Sparrey Speed 14 11 3 246 137 +109 44
3 Sherwood RFC 14 9 5 291 172 +119 36
4 TF Thugs 14 9 5 212 106 +106 36
5 Bartewick Dockers 14 6 8 187 258 −71 24
6 Urbanis 14 5 9 170 244 −74 20

7 Janwick Bloodhounds 14 5 9 175 265 −90 20 Did not qualify for FNT
8 RFC BM 14 0 14 78 319 −241 0 Did not qualify for FNT

Reps-Baker clawed its way back to winning ways. The dynasty is over, but at least the team can walk away from the season with another league championship. Coach Mitchell Johnson, whose job security was perhaps teetering after not winning any title the prior season, is now relatively safer. Sparrey really gave the Baker boys a run for their money, but a loss to TF Thugs on the third-to-last day was too devastating to recover from. The defending league champions from Sherwood could not conjure the same magic as they found last season in a shock first title; disappointed though they are, they will be looking to be the rising underdog in the FNT. Shockingly, former world champions Janwick Bloodhounds was pushed out of the playoffs on tiebreakers by Urbanis. That is an ignominious development for a once-proud program. One club that won't have any more developments is RFC BM: already hemorrhaging money, luring no fans and winning an average of a game or two per season, its disgraced owner announced the club would fold at the end of the season. BM couldn't manage to win even one match this season. The CRA is considering bids to replace the club; the leading contenders are from Topher and Comesby.

Finnmakt National Trophy

First Round
Sherwood RFC 9–3 Urbanis
TF Thugs 8–14 Bartewick Dockers

Semifinals
Reps-Baker 21–14 Sherwood RFC
Sparrey Speed 6–3 Bartewick Dockers

Final
Reps-Baker 13–0 Sparrey Speed

Just when we thought Reps-Baker could no longer win titles at the clip they did in the past - well, we've had to rethink that. Reps-Baker sweeps this year's rugby titles, and in undramatic fashion, shutting out the helpless Speed in the final.

The usual hustle and bustle of Bartewick society is a little more energized these days. The nation's greatest sporting spectacle has returned for its second edition at the glorious Bartewick Central Academy; and with two rounds complete, the tennis world (and by extension, all of Civil Citizenry) is on edge wondering how this exciting competition will climax.

Top 5 Stories From the Citiz Open

5. Pros and Fans Alike Call for Doubles
As magnificently as this year's Open is unfolding, there is a glaring drawback in that you won't find any doubles being played across the grounds. While the CTA is being heralded for unifying the genders - thereby removing the need for separate men's and women's singles events - there is still a wish for doubles so that there aren't too few competitions ongoing at the expansive Academy. Fans have been clamoring for the inclusion of doubles; most make the argument that doubles is a vital form of the game, and ignoring it is to relegate one of the great pastimes of the sport to second-tier standing. Some, however, have said they feel their tickets no longer carry the same value they did during last year's Open: back then, there were matches across four different events to view, but at this point only one is being contested (albeit at a hitherto untested level).

Professionals, too, have joined the uproar in support of doubles. Sealey Armstrong, the Open men's doubles champion last year, has been visibly outspoken about the importance of doubles. While Armstrong was eliminated in the first round of the singles competition, he said his first tennis love has always been the thrill of the fast-paced doubles game. Others, too, such as Walton Wade, Ivy Kelson, and even Alfred Hamilton, have voiced their support.

The CTA has said they will consider hastily adding a doubles competition this year. Under optimal circumstances, there would be separate events for male and female teams, but almost certainly the genders will be interspersed. More relevant is the discussion over the teams themselves: should players be allowed to select partners of any gender, or shall this singular doubles championship be mixed doubles? A mixed doubles tournament would be quite interesting, indeed.

4. Hamilton's Unconvincing Win Has Critics Doubting Deep Run
The idea that Alfred Hamilton could defend his Open championship was a little far-fetched from the beginning, but now that the world has gotten to see a taste of his current level of play, there is even greater skepticism that the thirty-four-year-old can achieve that goal. It took him five sets to put away the pesky Severn Dawson, a tall Citiz with some of the best raw power in the game, particularly on his serve. Early on, Hamilton couldn't handle the power, allowing Dawson to take control with winners that were accomplished by sheer brute force; and were it not for Hamilton's improved endurance, Dawson might have consolidated his two-sets-to-one lead into a victory. He laid down in the fifth set, but Hamilton's win can only be described as a squeaker.

And that was just his first match. He's got five more to win, the toughest of all coming in the fourth round, after a duel with the upset-minded Kimberleigh Ward. Hamilton is facing a showdown with top-seeded Vittoria Panaro, who is seeking to avenge a rough patch that included crashing out in the Emberton first round. Preliminary odds already show Hamilton the sizable underdog, and indeed, it is hard to fathom him advancing past that match. A victory certainly won't be in the making should Hamilton play at the level which he produced versus Dawson.

3. Enticing Third Round Matches On Tap
The third round should be no less exciting than the second. Several top-level matches are in the cards. The headliner of the day will be a premature battle between two popular Citiz veterans, Chelsea Farnell and Tate Birch. Both have been around since the early days of Citiz tennis, representing the red and black in several international competitions. In past years, this match would perhaps hold the stature such that the winner would be worthy of claiming the whole crown, but both players' primes have preceded this tournament. They will still contest at an extremely high level, though. Also of interest will be the thirteenth seed, Rob Westby, versus Danny Greenwood. Westby is a crafty left-hander who has burst onto the CCC scene this season with some impressive results; he is also an acclaimed doubles player, currently partnered with Sealey Armstrong. Greenwood has one of the biggest serves in the game, and a deadly forehand, though not much else in the arsenal. If Westby plays smart, he will be wise enough to keep the ball to Greenwood's backhand and keep his opponent moving side-to-side; but if Greenwood hits the peak of this game, an upset is not out of the question by any means.

2. Several Notable Second Round Upsets
The highest seed to face elimination was the eighth seed, Bergnovinaian Nicole Williams. She has always flown under the radar as far as tennis popularity goes, though she seems to have been a top ten mainstay since amoebae were the most skilled life-form on earth. Up two sets to one, Williams succumbed to the overwhelming consistency of Easton Wheaton. Sealey Armstrong also met a fair match, in the form of top Yesopalithan Gerard Jenkins. Armstrong has only ventured into the singles realm this season, advancing all the way to the top ten; but he will be disappointed by this premature exit. Another popular Citiz, lefty Adriana Mitchell, went down in five. The fiery Mitchell knows how to get a crowd involved in a match, but the fourteenth seed, to the sadness of quite a few fans, will not have any more matches in Bartewick with which to enthrall the crowd. Others to go down included West Fuller, victim of Danny Greenwood; Rob Djokic, the rising Thatian with top-five potential whose loss to unheralded Ethel Gladwin will set him back; and Elliot Sprecher, a Darmeni better known for his doubles prowess, who had the closest match of the entire day (a 9-7 fifth-set defeat to Kimberleigh Ward).

1. Top Seeds Struggle Mightily
While the biggest loser of the day was seeded eighth, those ranked above her found themselves on the verge of defeat. Number one Vittoria Panaro, after rolling out to a fast start on Audrey Starr, was on the losing end of two consecutive sets, and had to turn on the gas to ensure victory in five sets. The fact that she had to use so much energy to secure the win may suggest she will be tired as the rounds go by. It's not like her colleagues had easier matches, though. Her compatriot, Novak Dlouhy, completely lost focus after winning the first two sets: he lost a set at love, the first time all year. So shell-shocked by this development, he lost the fourth, too, and it seemed he may not have the mental stamina to overcome this adversity. He was able to break his opponent, Dalton Tybalt, at 5-4 in the fifth to barely eke out a spot in the third round.

The Citiz got off a little easier. Brandon Rodden took a little while to warm up, but defeated Ashby Kelton somewhat handily. Rodden is still trying to adjust to his new lifestyle as a tennis star; being the top-seeded Citiz in the competition, he has a lot of pressure from the nation's fans, and it is unclear if he's experienced enough to be able to mold that support into energy that can guide him to success over six matches. Fabrice Wallace, the fourth seed who has been around for quite a long time, also won three easy sets after losing the first to Helen Tyson. Although his career coinciding with Hamilton's means Wallace has been underrated for a long time, people are now starting to realize he knows how to play on hard courts better than anyone else in the world - making him a dangerous threat in the later rounds of the tournament. Taylor Jefferson was the one who struggled the most: in her first Citiz Open, she lost the opening two sets to the slice artist Pollock Grayson, but Jefferson managed to keep her mental ground, find her footing, and pull out the W. Jefferson is another Citiz who has burst onto the scene over the last few months, and perhaps her nerves may not have adjusted well enough to the vast pressure that is heaping onto the Citiz representatives as the Citiz Open dramatically continues.
