The very exciting CCBA Championship gets underway with some potential early high-profile games. In the opening round, two teams that had deep postseason tournament runs face off in the Touffer-Chester game. More importantly, though, are the Sweet Sixteen games, where the top eight seeds join the action. Kirant-Topher would be a delicious inter-conference game; Astodon seems to be a potential upset threat for Janwick; Norfolk's surprising first-round Modraine Tournament exit will not deter them from challenging Chase Tech. Looking even farther ahead, the great Janwick-Kirant rivalry from the Citiz Urban could come to a boil in the Elite Eight, while Chase Tech hopes to avenge losing the Eastern regular season title to Iona. Coastal Citiz and Regal Heart seem to be the clear favorites heading into the tournament, but Regal Heart has some early challenges to get through and Coastal Citiz must tackle a pesky Dominion squad in the Elite Eight.

Surely the biggest upset was Johnstone's (relative) drubbing of Topher, which played very respectably in the top-heavy Citiz Urban. The most-viewed game was the Norfolk-Citiz International game, which came down to a one-point margin in favor of the eleventh seed. Bartewick Grafalee - 12-17 on the year in finishing fifth in the Big Northwest - pulled off a surprising upset over Westermere. The big losers of the first round are the Prairie and Waterfront, both of which have just two representatives in the Sweet Sixteen (the Waterfront's representatives both having qualified automatically into the Eastern Chase regional).

Only one upset in this round, but it was a big one: Janwick's downfall at the hands of Astodon. Astodon nearly won the Eastern Conference tournament en route to a nineteen-win season, but this was surely their biggest. They ruined an enticing Citiz Urban rematch between Janwick and Kirant, which annihilated Johnstone. Iona also destroyed WEU (combined with Chester's loss, the Prairie has no more teams left in the tournament), and Mark Daniel wiped the floor with sub-.500 Bartewick Grafalee.

Finally, the road to Bartewick has concluded. Three of the spots have been taken by the most dominant teams this season: Coastal Citiz, Regal Heart, and Iona. But Astodon has made an incredible run from the playoff round to the Final Four, knocking off the two powerhouse Citiz Urban squads in the process. The Eastern now has two teams in the Final Four, though another, Chase Tech, was very narrowly eliminated - by Iona, off a last-second three-pointer. Astodon's victory was no easy one either, as Kirant fell behind by as much as thirteen but clawed their way into the game before falling just short. Rabid Dominion fans pleaded for an upset, but Coastal Citiz' tenacious defense was just too much to handle. Even Mark Daniel, the Big Northwest champion, played their opponent tough; but Regal Heart's offense exploded for 94 points, more than enough to secure a berth in the Final Four.

The thirteenth seed in the national championship? You couldn't have imagined a more exciting scenario. Coastal Citiz' offense was stymied by the Purple Lions all game, and the heavy underdogs handed Coastal Citiz its third and final loss of the season. Their opponent will be Iona, their Eastern rival, which eliminated Regal Heart. The Sacreds were playing, essentially, for a hometown crowd, being located in Bartewick and all. Yet, like the number one seeds, they could not seem to find a rhythm; and Iona, which is everyone's favorite team no matter where you live or what school you attended, capitalized for the victory. That leaves a CCBA final no one predicted: Iona-Astodon.

The impossible run to the championship by the Purple Lions finally came to a close. The Gaels of Iona romped in front of a packed house at Grand Grafalee Court, which is the home of Bartewick Grafalee. Some may argue that Iona lucked out by facing a relatively easy opponent in the final - one that Iona beat several times this season - but supporters will point to Astodon's victories over Coastal Citiz, Janwick, and Kirant. This championship is a big deal for Iona, a school not known for its academics but which has invested heavily in athletics. That sure has paid off in Bartewick.

VICTORWICK PULLS OFF UPSET OVER POLARIAN CHAMPS (Torshavn). Name any handball league in the world, and I will personally present you with a check for £5 million tacos. Well, apparently Civil Citizenry has one, and so does Polar Islandstates. Being maybe the only two nations with professional handball leagues, their respective handball federations have devised an annual championship between the winners of the leagues. With the first season of the Handball Club Association and another season of the Elitserien Northern Handball League completed, the inaugural Trans-Rushmore Grand Championship was contested in Torshavn.

Losing just one game in twenty-eight HCA matches was Victorwick, the representative club of the northwest island. Despite securing a TRGC berth with an almost-perfect record, they were underdogs versus Elitserien champions IHK Torshavn, which managed to upset GKGK for the title. So when Ellery Landon scored eight goals - six in the second half - in Torshavn, it was a pretty notable upset. Victorwick claimed the first title over the Torshavn club; next year's rematch will take place some place in Civil Citizenry, though given Victorwick's domination it may not be a bad idea to assume the island will house the game.

Comments: A vast loss of leadership - manager Manning Pelham and captain Eva Glemnitz - did not bode well for the Old Boys, which stumbled into eighth place last season. Planeto Socrato, unable to right the ship with an aging, depleted squad, initiated a major overhaul in the offseason. The clear theme was youth. Twenty-three-year-old Aubrey Dew joined the mix, the team's second Babbagian and the third female in King's League history. Xavi Demichelis, the Erathi wunderkind who is just sixteen, was promoted from the team's youth organization for an infusion of speed and voracity. Also joining the front ranks are Bundy Filmore, a former U-21 national team starter, and Stanwick Seabrook, who currently plays behind Oakleigh Carroll on the U-21 team. That means the only players left in their fourth decades are Albert Osbourne and the legendary Burkett Barclay, who says he plans to stick around for a few more years. Socrato seems to be okay with that, though: Barclay has been ultra-loyal to Athens Town and provides valuable experience for a squad that may need a few cribs and bibs.

Comments: Second-year manager Axton Northrup must find a way to make something out of very little. Without Lee Sharp banking in a guaranteed 15+ goals, the Bonnies flopped into twelfth, dangerously close to relegation. Now, their prized replacement for Sharp - Irwin Garland-Hart, the youthful forward who netted eight goals in his King's League debut season - is gone to Falconfar, and in his place is unknown Isham Colton. Under Northrup, the team has shifted from having one of the league's most explosive offenses to a club that relies on its defense for success. Navering Pounchtal has been a stalwart in goal, flanked by Ayers Kemp and Milton Holmes. But the offense has almost no threats of scoring: Derby Quinn is now 32 years old, and Fabio Hernandez and Rolando Madison have failed to break through. It's hard to believe Briarmore could fall from league runner-up to relegation in just six years; but for a club that hasn't finished above eighth in half a decade, that may well be the reality.

Comments: The Nationals, under young Reginald Deacon, debuted quite well last season, marching into seventh on the heels of great seasons from Preston Latimer (one of the top young forwards in the nation), Rawdon Waldo (who has definitively re-entered the mix for national team selection), and Robin Bolton (the prolific midfielder whose twelve goals was third-most on the team). Despite the success, Deacon felt continued improvement would hinge upon constantly retooling the shed. He made several major transactions, the most notable being the signing of Jordan Morgan from Mangolana City. Morgan is maybe the best Mangolanan around, and is an eye-popping twenty-one years old; he is maybe the best signing the team has ever seen. The team picked up a starting defender from World Cuppet champion Zenega, Mustapha Touré, who will captain a weak defensive squad. Behind him is another Mangolanan signing, Chris Marte, who played well at Ville-DuPont and now hopes to continue proving himself in Civil Citizenry. Up front, Waldo and Latimer - who combined for 29 goals last season - will continue to pace this high-scoring team. The quality of transactions seems to bode good things in the Nationals' near future.

Comments: No team finishes second in the league without reason. From top to bottom, there aren't enough good things to say about this roster. Oakleigh Carroll is maybe the nation's brightest upcoming star, and has emerged as a clear successor to Gerald Diamond on the national team. He even beat out Diamond for the Goalie of the Year award last season - his first season in the pros. He is protected by a top-notch defense led by Abdian star Miguel Atterbarry, above-average Edward Upton, and captain Guildford Brigham-Hamilton. Parker Pollock has become a fixture on the national team starting rotation, and scored a career-high eighteen goals last year, good for fifth-most in the King's League. Andres Guerrón has emerged as one of the top passers in the nation; that will continue to come in handy for two coveted foreign forwards, Jeremi St. James is the 1093rd Taeshani in the King's League but has stood out for his fourteen goals last year. Coming out of Astria Yaburi, Bryan Faulkner scored only twelve goals, but trained hard during the offseason and seems to be well-equipped for another year of success for the Barts.

Comments: Finally! The greatest rivalry returns: Athens Town-Eastern Chase, coming soon to a television mega-conglomerate near you. How Albert Tomlinson has managed to keep his job through relegation and a disastrous thirteenth-place showing in the Lord's League is beyond anyone's senses, but with a second-division championship and Series B Champions' Cup semifinal run under their belt, Eastern Chase returns to premier football. The Giants bolstered their lineup with the signing of top Unitopolian Josef Matinzky, who will become a stalwart alongside Mohammed Kumar. Kumar takes the captain's armband this season; the Osarian has been here for years, and must continue to aid the growth of players like Dario Szezlak, who is currently the starting goalie for the Polarian under-21 national side. The offense is pretty dead, except for Jamar Simmons, which means the defense must be in tip-top shape to prevent another fall to second-tier play.

Comments: This club prides itself on not playing any foreigners, but it seems a team can only become so good with no one but Citiz. Two seasons in the King's League, and no better finish than eleventh. Fleming Beresford is on the hot seat, no longer allowed to ride the wave of support from winning the Lord's League three years ago. His quest to stay a King's League manager is dependent on three youngsters. Broughton Storm was a first-class goalkeeper two seasons ago, earning a national team selection before Oakleigh Carroll came into the fray. Even with Carroll and Gerald Diamond ahead of him, Storm has the eagerness to prove he wasn't a flash in the pan. Groundery also has two players who were Rushmori U-20 champions: Scott Salisbury, a talented midfielder just twenty years of age and a member of the most recent Di Bradini Cup team; and Foster Whitmore, who scored ten goals alongside Avery Radcliffe last season. If these young players flourish - and do so quickly - Groundery could begin to see its results improve.

Comments: Rex Conway has been around since the beginning of time, but if Salutin is relegated to the King's League for the second time in team history don't expect to see him around much longer. He's got eighteen more losses than wins in a seven-year stint, and no better than a ninth-place finish to show for it. Rather than revamp his lineup, however, Salutin only added unknown Grover Norman in place of retiring captain Baxter Wright. Madison Kingman is the new captain, and he will have to do with few recognizable names. Mark Allenby has been a stud on the defensive end of things, but is not flanked by anyone near his caliber. The brightest spot on the team is Dawson Pollard-Beck, who is quietly making a name for himself with fifteen goals at the ripe age of twenty-four. He has learned a thing or two from Franz van der Ryst, the aging Rhodesian who has also served as a mentor for young Ockie Oosthuizen. Oosthuizen had an average season last year; expectations are high for him to return to peak form. The lack of notably positive changes, combined with a weak squad to start with, bodes poorly for Conway and the Sallies.

FC Sandside

Lineup: Thibault; Wilton, Aiken, Maguire, Barnett; Beval, Galuba, Sinclair, Blackburn; Royce, Bassford

Comments: The Golden Kylies are a mediocre King's League team if there ever was one. Never better than eighth place, never worse than twelfth. Only if the stars truly align perfectly will Sandside improve on their best showing. The team lost Julian Oliseh, who scored 39 goals in three seasons; he will be replaced by little-known Legalese prodigy Kelvin Bassford, who has not yet reached his twentieth birthday. Of course, the top stalwart is Miller Royce, the defending Player of the Year for his twenty-one goals. The offense around him includes coveted midfielder Pascal Sinclair; Taeshani Wolfgang Galuba, who has been around forever and is a top passer; and Ralph Beval, formerly of national under-21 fame. The backfield includes no one of note, which means defensive prowess is left in the hands of Édgar Thibault, a top goalie from New Montreal States. He has been a little shaky in recent years, but experts believe his upcoming season will be a strong one. Overall, other than Royce, there are few immediate threats, and if Sandside is to move out of the King's League cellar the squad will need a lot of production out of what it has.

Fox Zero

Comments: A full season removed from their championship, the loss of Madison Garroway has certainly had an impact on the Cows. Although Norman Kerrick is a more-than-competent manager, he is not of the echelon of Garroway, who has already won a Divisjon One title with Polarian club Jan Mayen Islanders. So if the man on the sidelines can't guide Fox Zero to first place, Kerrick supposed, the players will. Having already lost Starblaydi star Fernando Agostini, young prodigy Ascot Sanders has left too, leaving a hole in the midfield filled by unheralded Huntington Tanner. The midfield will still be headed by Abel Scarloff, the Cosumarite with 32 goals in the past two seasons, and Stanley Ichtyelkov, a Delaclav expat who is aging but still a driving force. At the forward positions are Cedric & Cedres; it's not a law firm, but rather the best goalscoring duo the league has ever seen, combining for 34 goals last year alone. Despite all the offensive firepower, Kerrick has decided to expand the Cows' range of prowess by bolstering the defense. Novák Prakusya is no slouch in goal, but he will finally have a lot of protection in front of him. Between Graham van Zant; a bulky, powerful Taeshani; Kelvin Lundström, who at 22 is one of the best Pasargan defenders; and Milton Seabrook, who just completed his second Di Bradini Cup, there are a lot of defenders to go through before having to face the Thatian goalie. Kerrick's recent retooling has created one of the league's most well-rounded teams, and it's hard not to see the Cows contending for their second title.

High Groth Athletic

Lineup: Waverleigh; Scoville, Ragnarsson, Washington, Stoddard; Hargrove, Phillips, Krause, Hamilton; Hoyle, Dell

Comments: Nothing will change from last year's squad that finished a surprising sixth. Manager Irwin Clay figures this club is still on the up, and he may be right in some regards. Kelly Waverleigh has continued to blossom into an upper-echelon goalie, and is glad to be protected by one of the top defenses in the league. The defense is headed by Joshua Scoville, who has been this generation's answer to Burkett Barclay; Cable Washington and Guðjón Ragnarsson have proved more than capable of handling premier King's League offenses, and Yule Stoddard has improved leaps and bounds and is still only twenty-two. On the offensive side of things, Gil Phillips has hit the big three-oh, and top Saugeain Sasha Krause is now thirty-five; even Ragnarsson is thirty-two. That means a lot of burden will be placed on the shoulders of Padget Hoyle, the twenty-two-year-old phenom who scored eight goals last season. If the veterans play as they did in their prime, and youths Hoyle and Stoddard step up, this could be a dangerous sleeper team.

Hill Lane

Lineup: Filmore; Pollock, Deacon, Stanford-Wallace, Ortega; Hotovec, Nye, Gifford, Burbank; York, Kingston
Last Season: 2nd in the Lord's League
Comments: Another promotion is here for a young Hilltoppers squad. Two years ago, they finished last in the King's League, losing seventeen of twenty-eight matches to earn relegation. This time, though, Hill Lane could be here to stay. Slade Collier, who has been here since the team was founded, has picked up two foreigners to boost a youthful roster. Daniel Ortega is one of the best Kytlerians available, and will be a major factor in a defense that includes captain Howard Hudson Stanford-Wallace and Rushmori U-20 champion Edison Deacon. Out of Pasarga comes Michal Hotovec, who was on his native Di Bradini Cup team and comes from Baskita FC. Somerset Kingston is the main goalscoring threat, having put up nine tallies last season. In general, Hill Lane isn't exceptional on either side of the ball, but has good chemistry and a solid manager, which could be enough to play first-tier football longer than one season at a time.

Merrilin FC

Lineup: Diamond; Folke, Stackwell, Akaregi, Saxon; Mills, Sedlak, Camelot, Keaton; Nordin, Felton-Brewster
Last Season: 1st in the King’s League
Comments: Winning the King's League wasn't a fluke. Merrilin has steadily improved on its results ever since winning the first Lord's League season seven years ago. Reaping the profits of winning the championship, Lester Blackburn went out and added to this stacked team by purchasing Polarian phenom Edvar Folke. At only 22, he's already got caps for a top-five national team, and will be a useful replacement for Lester Kendrick. Gerald Diamond is still the best goalie Civil Citizenry has to offer, and is turning into a franchise player. On the offensive side of things, Carsewell Mills returns to a prominent role after winning the Offensive Player of the Year award while just entering his prime. A couple of foreigners cover the center of the pitch, notably Tobias Camelot, a top-notch Taeshani. Brent Felton-Brewster is now one of the league's best scorers, while at the same time mentoring Luka Nordin for whom people have high prospects for. There is so much talent and depth from end to end that Merrilin has to be a favorite to go back-to-back for the first time since Athens Town in years 6-8.

North Woodlands

Captain: Palmer Newman
Lineup: Newman; Elder, Jefferson, Ordway, Garroway; Vander Rox, Wilson, Golding, Cangelosi; Huntleigh, Torress
Last Season: 10th in the King’s League
Comments: In Wilson Ford-Brant's first year, North Woodlands took several steps backward, slipping to tenth place, their worst showing in four years. He has tried to help out a historically weak offense by signing Jane Vander Rox, but the Yesopalithan is only nineteen and may not have the desired impact immediately. There are several other pieces who will score a few goals, but it is clear the Lumberjacks are still several years away from moving off its defensive mentality. Till then, big performances will be required from Palmer Newman, who has fallen off in recent years due to lack of support from his defense; Leizarraga Garroway, who has become a sometimes national team starter; and Irving Jefferson, who has adjusted well to playing in the center. There are some bright spots here, but not enough to see the Lumberjacks making much of a run.

Sherwood FC

Comments: Possibly the best team never to have broken through for a championship, Sherwood enters this season at a critical juncture. For the most part, this team is aging, and players like Pol Sundstrom (32), Ormond Henderson (32) and Burkett Wainwright (31) are exiting their primes. However, there are a lot of bright spots. The defense is still the best in the King's League: four national team level players, plus a phenom young goalie to boot, the best goalie the team's had since Tim Hedjuk's early days. The midfield should see slight improvement without old-timer Virabi Alberto Gomez huffing and puffing around the pitch; Spencer Hunter Sherman takes his place, and he should be a helpful complement to the likes of Sundstrom and multi-faceted Templeton Freeman. Up front, Dan Nagato may be thirty, but he's got the shooting leg of a twenty-five-year-old, and that's why he's still an explosive Saugeain force. If Tomlin Whitelaw can't capitalize on the wealth of talent his team has, don't expect him to stick around much longer. But there are a lot of things that could go right if everyone stays healthy.

TFC Lannymore
Location: Eastern Chase

Comments: Quite a stretch of success for Fernleigh Whitcomb and the Lannies. In the last five seasons, the team has finished no worse than fourth, and for good reason. This team scores goals like it's nobody's business, and don't expect that to change this year. Though Hastings is clearly past his prime and won't put up the same numbers he did in the past, he is still one of the league's top players. Any output he lacks this season will be made up for by Mikhail Magyar, who is coming into his own as a dual-threat scorer and playmaker in the midfield. Meanwhile, Jessica Behnke (second-most goals scored) and Kylek Ale'ack (seventh-most) will continue to pace this furious squad seeking its second title. On the other side of the ball, the average age (minus twenty-year-old Dell Livingstone, who has just returned from his second Di Bradini Cup stint) is thirty-one years of age, so expect the defenders to be churning away, hoping to prove they are not too far past their primes. The offense should be as explosive as usual, if not more so; and if this is the case, they should contend as they have for so long.

It took five seasons, but finally a non-Baker team has managed to win the TRCL. The Thugs led from midseason onward, but did not clinch the title until defending international champions Janwick Bloodhounds lost to Sparrey on the final day. The Thugs thoroughly exceeded expectations - especially considering this is a league that has the last two Seasogs title winners and none from Thugfield. Those two champions both finished 9-5: Reps-Baker, which dropped four games from last season's performance; and Janwick, which had never had a winning season in the TRCL (!) but defeated all international challengers last year to claim the Seasogs championship. Rugby fanatics are pleased that there is more parity in the league, but officials are worried that without Reps-Baker captivating the nation, domestic rugby will fall off as a major Citiz sport. At least this year, the title run was closer and more interesting than it has at any other time.

Restoring order to Citiz rugby, Reps-Baker claims its fourth National Trophy. Traditionally a high-scoring club - proven by its heavy defeat of Janwick in the semifinals, a high-profile matchup that likely attracted international attention - Reps-Baker was held to just ten points by TF Thugs. But it was just enough to clinch victory. All four of Reps-Baker's National Trophies have come at the expense of the Thugs, who are now thoroughly frustrated with the elusiveness of this grand championship due to this one dynasty. If it hasn't already become one, this could become a recurring storyline for years to come. Can the Thugs overcome Reps-Baker's dominance, just once? They managed to do so in the regular season, but having lost a fourth National Trophy title game, they will have to seek their revenge in the upcoming Seasogs tournament.

A fun season overall. The ever-challenging North Division produced some fun antics at the end: the Lasers only took the lead on the third-to-last day, when the rival Lords defeated the Fire. But the most impressive division was the Central, long considered the weakest because cold-weather sports are not suited for the south. Four teams finished in the top half of the league, points-wise. Only by bad luck did the Stars, the chronic division cellar-dwellers, miss out on the Ice Cup Royale. Surprisingly, Athenstoft was not one of those teams, finishing in a surprising dead last. The top seed for the tournament was the Slapshots, as usual, dominating the West once again. The East is an interesting case. The Innovation came out on top by a wide margin, but the excitement came for the third ICR slot, as the smalltown Cinderella team, the Subbs, won on the final day but missed overtaking the Techmen by a single point. Eastern Chase's domination has the CHA and CHL executives pondering a division shift, potentially moving a team or two from the loaded North Division - like the Fire or Skyscrapers - to the East in exchange for a weaker squad. The summer meetings will determine if this idea becomes a reality, and it certainly won't be implemented for another two seasons.

The postseason was the most electric it's ever been. Defending champions Skyanter were on the cusp of elimination in the first round at the hands of Techmen, but rallied to advance to play the Kentmen, who won the first two games and were up 3-2 in the series. After an exciting Game Six that saw the Fire win in an intense shootout, the Kentmen finally put them away. In the second round, three of four series went the distance; of the division winners, only the Lasers were eliminated, meaning the stacked North Division was not represented in the semifinals for the first time ever. With the emergence of the Central's depth, it could be that the North's stronghold on Citiz hockey is ending. The Slapshots and Innovation each had strong leads in the semifinals, and though they each lost Game Five on the road, they advanced to the final in a rematch of the first ICR. Unlike the first one, when the Slapshots raced out to a 3-0 lead, the Innovation won the first two games. They lost their momentum when they dropped two games at home, and even when they took back the series lead in a shootout win, pundits were saying Eastern Chase didn't have the staying power to last the full series. The Innovation sure proved them wrong, thrashing the Slapshots in a three-goal clinching victory. It is the Innovation's first Ice Cup Royale title in three final series appearances.

The second season of the EBL has come and gone, though not without some excitement. In the North, the Centurions conquered their crosstown rivals for the division championship. Its high-powered offense, led by first baseman Heath Rodney (34 HR) and center fielder Lansing Black (.409 OBP, 28 SB), was the deciding factor in becoming the only 80-win team in the league. The Centurions are still riding high from their appearance in the Baseball Club Champions' Cup semifinals two years ago, and will look to stay in form all the way through the Diamond Championship. Inter regressed slightly from the previous season - partially due to the loss of ace Harding Braden for two months due to an abdominal injury - but with Braden (12-3) back on his game and Fielding Irving (.404 OBP) captaining the offense from the 3-spot, Inter seems to have a good shot at qualifying again for international competition. Somehow, the Sims managed to qualify for the Diamond Championship with a .412 winning percentage, barely (bearly?) beating out the Bears and the Violinists.

The South was decidedly better overall than the North - but the victorious Cowboys only put together 77 wins, 8 fewer than last year. That's not as bad as the Reds, which fell an astounding eighteen games from the previous season. Clearly, the domination of that top pair was not to last, as the Jerseys gave the Reds a run for their money for second place. The Jerseys, led by slugger Colton Newman (38 HR), will settle for the South's third seed in the playoffs again - not that it hurt them last season, when they upset Western Chase to reach the semifinals. But the Cowboys are riding high heading into the postseason as the undisputed champions of the South. The Stones barely managed to beat out the Bobcats for the last playoff spot on a final-day victory over the Sims.

It's not enough for the Reds to win two straight Diamonds. They have to do it in seven games. Again. They didn't have to come back from a 3-1 deficit, as they did with Inter last season; but a legendary one-run duel between Kester Hall and Ralph Brant denies the Bartewick teams a title, again. Hall (16-2 in the regular season) had a no-hitter through the sixth inning, while Brant's only run allowed to the Centurions was off a single-double combination in the second inning. It's hard to believe the Centurions' explosive offense could be silenced for nine innings, but it actually happened twice this series (once during a 10-run explosion for the pitching-centric Reds). Maybe the offense was tired from having gone the distance with Inter in a stupendous crosstown rivalry. Whatever the case may be, from beginning to end this was an enthralling baseball season.

Three of the top five records in the NPB belonged to teams in the North. The defending champions Urbanites were tied with the Feds with two games to play, but a close loss to the Gunners on a buzzer-beater Winston Hilton three was the difference for Topher to win the championship. The Blazers were right on their tails all season, but are still missing that one key player to take them to the upper echelon. Some say the North might as well have served as a national championship, but there's still the Henderson Trophy to play.

In the East, Henderson finalists Sparrey was no match for the Squirrels, which avenged losing the division title last season on a tiebreaker. Waldo Burton's 23.2 ppg guided the team to 45 wins, more than enough to win a division loaded with talent yet unable to establish itself as equal to the North and South. The Panthers were a preseason favorite to make the postseason, but faltered and finished only three games above .500. Both Eastern Chase squads failed to qualify again - same with the Bartewick teams, which makes the CBA worried that the major TV markets are not getting enough exposure to basketball. It doesn't seem that anything will be done to rectify that in the near future.

But the CBA did make one major move: transferring the Tigers to the West, and moving the Greenhats to the South. Unsurprisingly, the Tigers became West Division championships, and Suthwarmoss took up residence in the cellar of the South. Though the effects of the move could have been predicted beforehand, many people lauded it, as it made the West at least a little more relevant and un-stacked the stacked South. However, the West could still use some help: only the Tigers and the Arches had winning records, and with unknown places like Western Chase, Sherwood, and Westwold in the mix, that may not change for a while yet. Till then, West Division fans will have to be content with the domination of Alder Hayes (24.7 ppg, 11.5 rpg).

The South was the most exciting of all. Not at the very top, where the Bricks pulled away from the Nets to claim division for a third straight time. It was for the final wildcard spot that things got interesting. Heading into the final game, the Seekays had pulled even with Vendrall off a 7-point win over the Nets; but by defeating Baker, the Lightning ensured that the last spot would go to tiebreakers, which it did, in favor of Vendrall. Surely, the Bricks will contend for another title, but so will the Nets, who have come a long way from finishing last in the South two seasons ago. Merrilin missed out on a first-round bye by a single game, and will have to face two division members consecutively (Vendrall and Kent) to advance to the semifinals. But don't count them out. Don't count anyone out - it's the NPB postseason.

What to Watch For - North Division

► Will the Lasers' addition of Joseph Martin be enough to save a below-averaged defense? The Lasers shopped around for a new goalie during the offseason, but were unsuccessful in completing a deal. Aiken Thane will get the nod in goal until Brook Armstrong returns from a back injury. Martin will likely help the defense improve, but the Camian's youth means his impact probably won't be widespread. The Lasers will have to rely on its top-notch offense to continue topping the division.
► Is it finally the Lords' year to win another division championship? It's been several seasons since Preston Chapman guided the team to victory (before being swept in their first playoff series). The Lords have an offense equitable to their crosstown rival's. Eric Lawson is one of the league's hottest prospects and the team's main goalscorer. Temperamental center Avery Hall has a ton of talent, but he must stay calm throughout the season to be effective. And the team managed to swipe Gelv Nomaer from Polar Islandstates to play opposite Lawson. The average first line age is 25, and this team has nowhere to go but up.

What to Watch For - East Division

► Will Kent Preston live up to the high standard set by his predecessor, Todd Wythe? Now that Wythe has left to manage the national team, Preston is taking over a four-time division champion and the defending Ice Cup Royale champion. He has the benefit of gaining left winger Sim Gorbuchev, a top Polarian. However, there are still some question marks on the first line, particularly the health of 33-year-old Grayson Halliwell. Preston will have a lot to prove over the next season to show Eastern Chase is still formidable.
► Was Samuel Lawrence a good investment? The Plutionian will take over as the Techmen's center, replacing Reynold Fitch, who skipped town to move to the Red Waves. However, Lawrence isn't a natural goalscorer, and neither are wingers Markham Sherwood and Sutton Frayne. Vendrall is pretty deep at the wings, especially with young Michael Coleman and Gent Burdon hanging around, so Sherwood and Frayne may need to exceed expectations to keep their jobs.

What to Watch For - West Division

► Is it time for Topher to reclaim the Ice Cup Royale? The answer: an emphatic yes. Lester Colbert, just drafted out of Norfolk University, is the next big CivilineHL star. The center is backed up by legendary Bradleigh Paris, and recent Cotdelapomais signing Florent Robichaud. 21-year-old defenseman Vagn Kautsky comes from the far north to join the team's first line, too. This team could not be any more stacked, and the Slapshots are favored to go all the way.
► Could the Twins qualify for the playoffs? Now that the failed Tilden Farnell-Melville is out of a job, it's up to head coach Siddell Cath to make that a reality. This team is crafty, a virtue of many combined years in the league. The average first line age is nearly 30. Moreland Myers is a monster in goal; he'll get some help from lanky 6'6" Mytanar Alix Dugev. On offense, it's Edward Hadleigh and [b]Woodrow Diamond who will be the goal-creators. The West is relatively weak this year, so don't count the Twins out of a playoff spot.

What to Watch For - Central Division

► How unpopular was Thane Seabrook's decision to hire Tim Green to replace Cary Lander? Green, a 24-year-old Camian recently signed from their domestic league, is clearly superior to Lander, twelve years his elder. But Lander was the most exciting player on the Kentmen, and having him relegated to the second line has upset many fans. Seabrook is entering only his second season in place of the ultra-popular coach Cliff Barker; only a lot of success this season will put Seabrook in good spirits with an enraged fan base.
► When will the Stars stop sucking? Last season was the first time the team managed to escape the Central cellar, actually managing a winning record. But top right winger Oswald Buck moved to Brevin, and that will greatly weaken Janwick's offense. Not much is expected of new Cotdelapomais goalie Benoît Perreault, while expectations are slightly higher for Darmeni signing Brent Brown. Head coach Golding Bishop is very hands-off, which means developing talent like Perreault and center Todd Lincoln will be slow.

For the second straight year, Reps-Baker has fallen short of the league title. Sherwood surprisingly captured its first regular season championship, mostly thanks to a top offense. The former Barsteeg champion, Janwick Bloodhounds, had a losing record and only barely qualified for the postseason tournament. The real story, though, is RFC BM, which had the worst season in history, winning just a single game all season. The owners are having a firesale for this disgraced franchise, so don't be surprised if the team comes back under a new guise and personality next season.

The era of Reps-Baker's domination is coming to a close. Losing to the Thugs in the semifinals meant the team lost before the final for the first time ever, and while they'll be returning to the Barsteeg Championship, they'll come in limping. After defeating the former Barsteeg winners in the first round, the Thugs barely scratched out the semifinal win in one of the league's greatest games ever. But they were mightily disappointed by their loss to Sparrey. The Finnmakt Trophy still eludes the Thugs, and it will be interesting to see if they can overcome this curse.

Wrapping Up the North Division

► The addition of Joseph Martin was a huge help for the Lasers. The defense was one of the best in the league, thanks in no small part to Martin and the return of Brook Armstrong to the daily lineup a third of the season in. Colter Blake was very impressive in his debut, netting 23 goals. Somehow, the Lasers lost in the Ice Cup Royale second round in seven games for the third consecutive year; that, combined with yet another drop in wins, could put Deverell Fulton on the chopping block this offseason. Team MVP: RD Joseph Martin
► Jerrell Kip may be 31, but he played like he was a decade younger this season. He helped Skyanter defy expectations and finish runner-up for the fifth consecutive season. Gaizka Exarte had an above-average season, and a superb postseason, earning the Ice Cup Royale MVP award. The Fire's latest draft pick, Cody Styles, played pretty well, but clearly needs some work, according to head coach Spencer Renshaw. Somehow, Skyanter managed to go all the way, upsetting heavily-favored Topher and Eastern Chase in the process, to win their second championship in three years. Look out, world: Skyanter's coming for you. Team MVP: C Jerrell Kip
► The Lords didn't get the results they wanted during the regular season, but their run to the playoff semifinals was an accomplishment for Preston Chapman & Co. 24-year-old Eric Lawson was a beast all season, finishing in the top three in goals. As Lawson took center-stage, left winger Gelv Nomaer was forced to play more of a supporting role, as did Avery Hall, who missed a chunk of the season with a sprained ankle. The defense was a little underwhelming, partially due to the trade of Paris Scoville, who played on the second line, to the Twins. Things are only getting better for the Lords, and if they can continue adding depth they could be a force for years to come. Team MVP: RW Eric Lawson
► As good as the Hubs' offense was this season, the back line and lack of youthful depth was what let them down in terms of making an inaugural playoff appearance. Gerard Dyer was one of the league's top goalscorer, thanks in no small part to center Severn Thornton, who led the league in assists and was a machine in that regard. In his first season in Brevin, Oswald Buck played somewhat well, but the 26-year-old needs to add more to his repertoire than just the fundamentals. Meanwhile, you can bet Webb Wilfried is going to be putting some defenders on the market (I'm looking at Kirby Parker), as well as most of the aging second line. Team MVP: LW Gerard Dyer
► Another season of cellar-dwelling for the Skyscrapers, and they won't take much solace in earning their best record ever. Comesby featured the worst defense in the league, mainly thanks to losing goalie Dale Delton for the entire season starting from game three against Skyanter. Manfred Miller was a disaster, and young Drake Marsh, in only his second season, was not able to live up to the expectations of a starting role. Brand Marleigh, the team's latest draft pick, did not look very good, either. It will be up to center Edgar Norman, only 24 years old, to captain this team into the bleak future. Team MVP: C Edgar Norman

What to Watch For - East Division

► Eastern Chase has found a more-than-capable replacement for Todd Wythe. Kent Preston guided the Innovation to its third consecutive ICR final. On the offensive side, it was new pickup Sim Gorbuchev who was the main catalyst, leading the team in goals and finishing in the league's top five. Winger Grayson Halliwell, now 33, did not have a very good season, and rumors abound that he's ready to retire. He was benched a few times in favor of Ronald Thane, who would likely be a pretty good replacement for Halliwell. Pitney Storm was superb all season, and is making a strong case for the national team starting goalie spot. Team MVP: GK Pitney Storm
► Surely, the Indys would not have been so successful were it not for Drake Arundel. The Defensive Player of the Year was masterful from beginning to end, helping the Indys build a top-five defense despite the presence of a 22-year-old draftee in goal (Brook Gladwin). Coach Cable Lathrop made a smart decision platooning Vine Bramwell and Elmer Vannevar, as well as Gladwin and Merritt Gibson, to ensure the headstrong Arundel did not become frustrated with any one teammate. Twenty-four-year-old center Maldon Creighton played quite well, and is likely to emerge as a team leader moving forward. Team MVP: LD Drake Arundel
► The winger-center combination of talented Laval Carson and Ashton Marks... isn't really working. Two fiercely-individual players fighting for the limelight around the opposing net hurt much more than it helped Broadtown. Stan Hartwell will go into the offseason knowing that next year, he can't have both players still on the roster. However, he'll be quite heartened with the fact that the Subbs made the playoffs for the first time ever. The small town in Norfolk is suddenly on the map, and this could have great effects for the team and the city. Team MVP: RW Denzil Wade
► Samuel Lawrence was really the only bright spot for a Vendrall club that missed the postseason for the first time. He was the leading scorer on one of the worst offenses, which was riddled with issues (Markham Hammond's sharp decline, Sutton Frayne's two-month-long injury). Twenty-three-year-old left winger Michael Coleman is a top prospect for the team moving forward, though Ashton Bosleigh - if he's kept around for another year - might want to give Bradford Aswin more of a chance on the first line. Team MVP: C Samuel Lawrence
► Heading into the season, Trewich seemed like a solid contender for the playoffs; winger Hal Orrick and defender Colton Webb seemed to have built a solid nucleus around them capable of finally reaching the playoffs. They did compile their best record ever, but it wasn't enough to take them out of the division cellar. Ryton Welford was heavily criticized for not putting Sidwell Lee in for struggling Kasper Gartxia on the first line until the end of the season, when the Light were already eliminated. Torr Frazer was off-and-on in goal due to nagging injuries, and Huntington Sanford was not a sufficient replacement. This team has depth, but needs their prospects to develop quickly, because their starting line just isn't good enough to contend for the postseason. Team MVP: LD Colton Webb

What to Watch For - West Division

► The Slapshots put together the best regular season in CivilineHL history. There is no excuse for their second-round burnout. Scott Fuller assembled a championship-quality team, one that was more than capable of reclaiming the Ice Cup Royale for the first time in several years. Rookie of the Year Lester Colbert is truly the next big thing - fearless, aggressive, and yet sensible beyond his twenty-two years. Bradleigh Paris swept up several awards again, showing no signs of fatigue at age 26. Florent Robichaud was quite impressive in his debut in the league, especially considering he had to play alongside two major stars on offense. With a front line that can't be matched, don't expect Topher to fall back anytime soon, despite their disappointing exit. Team MVP: RW Bradleigh Paris
► Western Chase has the best goalies in the league. That's the one and only explicable reason for their second-place divisional finish and subsequent run to the ICR semifinals. Elsworth Bridgeleigh has international experience; Shaw Dennison is capable of starting first line on most teams; Carl Courtland was a top draft pick last season. That's three unbelievable goalies, and it's no surprise that they had to let one go. Dennison was jettisoned to Athenstoft. Borden Heath most certainly must rely on his defense (including defenders like Montgomery Merton and Paris Pickford) to keep the team near the top of the division. Team MVP: GK Elsworth Bridgeleigh
► Siddell Cath has proven himself a top manager in his first season in Comesby. Goalie Moreland Myers was a stud, as we expected, but he got a lot of help from Alix Dugev and mid-season pickup Paris Scoville, giving the Twins a very formidable defense. Goals were a little tough to come by; the lowest point came when Bromleigh Hadleigh was placed on waivers and left winger Parr Graham was moved to the right side as his replacement. Woodrow Diamond was slightly underwhelming at the center position. Nevertheless, this team - especially the top-notch defense - has a lot of upside moving forward. Team MVP: RD Alix Dugev
► The Icicles came very close to a postseason spot, but for the second straight year went home early. Robert Huntington, the national team's starting goalie, received little help from his mates in front of him. There aren't many options on defense in the farm system, which means Huntington is likely to be frustrated for a long time coming. On offense, Clayton Rowell looked good - when he wasn't spatting with hot-headed Mytanar Piotr Jenkov. The winger Rowell, 25, is the team's best chance at consistent scoring, but has to learn to settle down on focus on the fundamentals. Team MVP: GK Robert Huntington
► Portsdan suffered quite a fall: from 30 wins and the Ice Cup Royale semifinals, to the West Division cellar and their worst season since the expansion. Losing guys like Bond Everleigh and Wickham Wells to free agency left the Wolverines devoid of top-notch talent and veteran experience. Adding Steel Walker didn't help much at all; he's lost too much speed to be effective. Creighton Marleigh is still the best player on the team, but at 28 he's starting to lose his legs. There isn't much upside for Yale Reading and the Wolverines. Team MVP: LD Creighton Marleigh

What to Watch For - Central Division

► Give a lot of credit to Kyle's defense for winning the division. Samuel Ford was a nice pickup from Michael VII; Crawford Lindsay is the team's bedrock; Marlow Ashton and Audleigh Braden played above their levels and gave the team much-needed depth en route to the title. Management is frustrated that the team hasn't won a playoff game in three seasons, and while Radcliff Rockleigh is safe while he has a division title in his back pocket, he's got some work to do this offseason to keep the Red Waves moving forward. Team MVP: LD Crawford Lindsay
► Having the third-best defense in the league was a mix of luck and exceptional coaching. Certainly, none of the Thunder's defenders are top-shelf material; but together, they meshed perfectly, finding exactly the right chemistry to help guide the team to its best finish ever. Bond Everleigh was the offensive catalyst, banging home quite a few goals. He was aided by passing wizard Dawson Caldwell, who's only 24 and has a bright future ahead of him as a top sidekick. ► The Discovery's above-average defense is at least partially attributable to Shaw Dennison, who was claimed in a midseason trade from the Speed. Cliff Latimer and Montgomery Kyne, who have been friends since childhood, finally got the opportunity to play together on the first line, and they were superb. Tilford Crosleigh had a bit of an off season on the wings, opting to cede some limelight to underwhelming Cotdelapomais signing Malek Jutras. Wycliff Westby actually looked pretty strong at center (there weren't high expectations for him). It was a good sign for first-year head coach Ramsay Dyson to return the team to the playoffs after a shocking first-to-worst drop the previous season. Team MVP: GK Shaw Dennison
► By far the shock of the season was Kent's not-so-graceful fourth place flop. Tim Green did not mix well with Grimshaw Bourne, the still-agile center who played so well with Cary Lander. Lander had been shelved to the second line by unpopular Thane Seabrook to make room for Green at the season's outset, and it seems that the psychological impact of that move was demoralizing. Meanwhile, promising defenders Royston Oakes and Beaman Miller played nowhere near their potentials. Seabrook is high up on the chopping block heading into the offseason; Kentmen fans are infuriated at the team's disastrous season. Team MVP: GK Jonathan Mazinski
► Janwick has too much talent to be mired in last place again. Three youngsters on the front line could develop into true leaders: goalie Benoît Perreault, who played well but was a little timid as he moved to a new country at a young age; defender Brent Brown, who had much the same problem emigrating from Darmen; and center Todd Lincoln, who is the speedy anchor of an elderly offense but needs to learn better decision-making and utilize his instincts. Clearly, Golding Bishop is not a good fit with this team, so don't expect him to be around next season. Soon enough, Janwick will elevate itself out of the cellar. Team MVP: Brent Brown

Volleyball finally takes hold in Civil Citizenry. The national team has been lodged in the international top ten for quite a while now, though the team has not been able to break through for anything near a championship. The CVA got around to forming a coed professional league, the TVCL; it's based entirely in the southern half of the country, where it's warm and people can play it for fun on beaches. The favorites were the Orange - Crewiname is a college town and volleyball is popular there - and the Riflers. But the Orange crashed out, and the Riflers fell just short of the upstarts from Vendrall. Athenstoft's final-day victory wasn't enough to overcome the Woodpeckers, which was benefited by having demolished the Riflers in their second leg to win the tiebreaker. Though the TVCL is quite small and region-centric, the CVA is excited that a pro league has gotten off the ground, maybe the first one in history.

Citiz Football Administration ~~ Season 8 Preview

ChocoMilk Nationwide League of Championship Football Franchises

With the formation of the NLCFF to replace the King's League, all-new teams have been created, and no one quite knows how good these teams will be and what to expect from them. Therefore, the CFA has organized a preseason tournament, named after former national team manager and Champions' Cup winner Ramsey Parris, to generate hype for the upcoming season, and to give players a chance to build camaraderie with their teammates and management. As well, because the NLCFF season will not be completed for some time, the CFA has opted to use the Parris Trophy as the tournament from which international competition entrants will be decided. For this 20-team tournament, there were four rounds: two knockout rounds, followed by a 5-team group stage, from which the top two teams qualified for the final.
