The Brevity Challenge Cup 2
Rosters/RP/Results

Welcome

Welcome to Kukalaya and the Second Brevity Challenge Cup. This is your IC thread for rosters and role-playing, and the thread where results and challenges will be posted.

Before you post rosters, you should read the note on challenges next, and also read the roster challenge, in the third post. Both will be updated shortly.

Discussion Thread.
On Kukalaya.
Roster Challenge.

The Challenges & RP Bonus

RP bonuses will be reset after each match - you have to rise to the challenge with every game. Speaking of which...

Starting with the roster, every RP can respond to a small collection of challenges set each matchday when the RP bonuses are reset. Of course, you can ignore them completely, and there will be a minimum bonus just for posting. But to do well, consider the challenges. Bonuses can be had for a challenge met, and more so for creative interpretations - this is hopefully an opportunity to draw a bit of inspiration and to play with the written word. There will always be a number of challenges on offer, but all will expire after one matchday (at least in terms of bonuses, not to say you can't still use them to assist you).

Firstly, this is the Brevity Challenge Cup, so there is a word limit. 50 words. And stepping up a notch from the first series, the bonus will only be for 50 words precisely - but keep an eye on the challenges, because there may be variations.

There will also be a limit of one RP between matches.

Do smilies count? They most certainly do - against you. Being literary puritans, smilies are illegal in Kukalaya. So use of smilies may cost you your bonus...

Extra bonuses will be awarded for the various challenges that will be set. This time around, following discussions and feedback, challenges will impinge far less on your allocated word count.

Always feel free to fire questions at me via TG or in the OOC. Don't forget that you can also submit challenges to me via TG and I will try to incorporate them in the following rounds.

Format & Schedule

RP cut-off will be 10pm-Midnight GMT.

Group Stage
MD1 - Saturday 19 May
MD2 - Monday 21 May
MD3 - Wednesday 23 May

With an expanded 24 teams, there will be a guaranteed three-match post-group stage knockout. Teams will go into the following brackets:

Brevity Challenge Cup Bracket: Six group winners, plus two best runners-up. Tie-breakers will be points, goal difference, goals scored and if still tied, by random draw.
Glass Bowl Bracket: Next four group runners-up, plus four best third placed teams.
Copper Plate Bracket: Next two third placed teams, plus all fourth place teams.

There will be a random draw for each bracket's knockout ties. In each bracket of eight, the four winners will procede to a semi-final and final or third-place playoff, while the four losers will also procede to a losers semi and final/third-place play-off. There will be a selection of minor trinkets available for various finals. All teams who come away without winning a trophy will get a consolation Pewter Spoon, while the team that finishes last overall will win the highly toxic coveted Uranium Rod.

Knockout Stage
Quarters - Friday 25 May
Semis - Sunday 27 May
Finals - Tuesday 29 May
Semi-final losers will play in a third-paced play-off for their bracket.

The Challengers

To give some weight - but not too much - to the established order of things, teams will receive a ranking based on the most up-to-date KPB available - mid-59 - simplified by dividing up the KPB into brackets of ten and giving a rank dependent on which bracket a team currently resides in - anyone below 90th gets the minimum rank.

Full details of the Rank Yourself! plan in the roster challenge, below. Teams will not be able to indicate higher rankings. Rankings will be updated according to competitors indications before first scorination.

Kukalaya in 50:

Kukalaya is a sub-tropical fairly isolationist nation of people comparable in cultural history to Latinamerican and South Amerindian mix. But under the influence of technologically developed Chimor natives, the country is a near-postmodern tech urbanised society comparable with Japan in approximately seventeen years from now. Football is their greatest passion.

Brevity Challenge Cup in 50:

The Cup will take place in Esquipulas, with several stadium complexes easily able to cope with providing for the demands of international teams of all types. The public is indifferent to the outside world but will turn up in large numbers, curious about this event. Football is their greatest passion.

Esquipulas in 50:

The vast urban-industrial complex of the capital is home to thirty-eight million people in a high-tech, high-speed, high-rise city, where every building looks to have come from an architect's finest daydream. Connected by maglev railway above, on and below ground level. And eleven incredible stadia: football is their greatest passion.

Roster Challenge

There is no word limit on the roster and you are advised generally to make your roster in your usual style. RP bonus points are on offer for the roster, and will be your only bonus before MD1 – so as promised, this being a low-rent tournament - no RP is required between roster and first result. If you do RP, it won't get you extra points. And if you do RP, try to keep it in the spirit of the cup, i.e. short: fifty words max.

There is one challenge for your roster submission, based on your playing style and tactical ideas. You are permitted as always to choose your own skill modifier, from -5 to +5. However, you are also required to pick one of the five Oblique Strategies, listed below, as your initial tactical plan. Note that further strategies will become available to you with each round of games.

To score extra bonus on the roster challenge, complete a precisely fifty word explanation of your selected Oblique Strategy.

Please Send Me Some Words

OK, in addition to your roster, I need some words from each of you. They will be saved by me for use in a future round. All will be explained in good time, so I look forward to your words. Please have them to me before the end of the group stage. To avoid inbox disasters, I ask that all those ranked above 1 point in the OP (that's from K-P up) please TG the words to me here at Kukalaya. All those of a single rank point, please TG Zenega. This is what I need:

1. An exclamation
2. An adverb
3. A noun
4. An adjective

Please make sure it is a single word for each. See where this may be going yet? Our collective thanks go to Daehanjeiguk for submitting this challenge. Further instructions to follow after the group stage.

I will be using wordcounttool to check your word counts, and their definition will be the official tournament definition, so it is worth using that to check your numbers. Posting how many words you wrote will count towards your total, by the way!

Rank Yourself!

The rankings are based on the latest publish KPB rankings, and simplified into brackets of ten. So teams in the top ten get 10 ranking points, in positions 11-20 get 9 points, 21-30 get 8 and so on. Everyone from 91 down gets 1 point. But ask yourself, if you are sending a trial team of fringe players to test out for the world cup, would they be as good as your first team? If not, what bracket would you put them in? If they are pie-eating TV competition winners, would they be ranked any higher than 1? I'm leaving it up to you. If they are your first team or you think they are as good as your first team, then the rank you already have reflects that - you can't go higher. But you can rank them lower, if you want. For fun. Include it with your roster. If you do not indicate a new rank, you'll get the one indicated in the OP by default.

Oblique Strategies

Oblique Strategies, originally presented as a pack of cards, were developed by Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt. Each Oblique Strategy is a phrase or cryptic remark which can be used to break a creative deadlock or dilemma situation. There are presently five published editions.

I have used joshharrison's website to randomly grab these five.

Your starting strategies (pick one as your tactics):

Do the last thing first

What is the simplest solution?

Water

Breathe more deeply

Adding on

I look forward to seeing the rosters... First matchday is Saturday – good luck all.

Oblique Strategy:

What is the simplest solution? Saltwater. However, 'water' is one of the other alternative oblique strategies and, as such, 'what is the simplest solution' is not a simple solution to our strategic problem. Ergo, we will do the last thing first, and as such our strategy will be 'Adding on'.

Our Mascot - Ms. Cluck-n-Peck

What is the simplest solution to the Chickens' recent struggles in international play? Sports' oldest motivational tool, of course: the Cut. Coach Encover will closely monitor two players each match day. Those who perform well will remain on the team's World Cup 60 roster. Those who perform poorly will be cut.

The Frightened Chicken's home stadium - The Chickendometm - is located in the Armed Republic's capital city of Phrytton. All of the team's home matches are played there. The stadium's capacity is 15,000, with 1,000 seats reserved for fans of the away team. The "Chickens Fandom" is a group of ~2,000 dedicated, well-mannered Chickens fans who show up wearing chicken hats to nearly every match, clapping politely for the home team and quietly snickering at the away team.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my goalscorers - Yes
Godmod scoring events - Yes
Roleplay injuries to my players - Yes
Godmod injuries to my players - Yes
Hand out yellow cards to my players - Yes
Hand out red cards to my players - Yes
Godmod other events - Yes

Just about anything is fair game as far as I'm concerned. Just don't be a jerk.

In some sense, this is our real Baptism of Fire, with the upcoming qualification run probably a one-off to raise money for clubs. Can we immediately compete against the best sides and shock the world?

Well, probably not, so let's breathe more deeply and not get our expectations too high.

Style modifier: -1

Manager: Tykel Marsinee

Goalkeepers:
Tope Hassel (Paysban TU)
Sharnis Aylkee (Atteregav Numa)*
Tubin Luvelee (Brantslaybel TU)

Defenders:
Chera Maris (Attereg GU)
Lemond Toneler (Ousteeble TU)*
Shenlake Parkins (Ousteeble TU)* (captain)
Laynin Brathis (Ousteeble TU)
Lays Mearkayd (Nithgard GU)*
Soypuv Klume (Atteregav Numa)
Ruthin Brath (Attereg GU)
Stob Heayander (Perntav Marna TU)
Tardit Nyn (Nithgard GU)

Midfielders:
Dorim Atik (Ungalb Devsgrybe)
Moygel Hempner (Attereg GU)
Pesser Nagin (Brantslaybel TU)
Kayv Rashith (Ungalb Devsgrybe)
Ayila Reamlad (Buzhrumpus GU)*
Margel Puse (Ungalb Gultpyret)
Toyvin Vish (Stroyfungul GU)
Talia Wonker (Stroyfungul GU)*

Forwards:
Tearim Hayz (Ungalb Devsgrybe)
Moyer Kayns (Brayntel TU)
Belb Inmora (Ronthand TU)

*: female player

The players are listed in very rough priority order by position (first listed are more likely to play). Formations could be a 4-4-2, 4-5-1, 5-4-1, anything goes really but mostly with a defensive bent.

If you RP first, you can choose my goalscorers, RP injuries, and hand out cards. Feel free to godmod events, too, just don't godmod my characters' reaction too much. Alternatively, telegram first if you want to collaborate. Thanks!

Marsinee has chosen the players with an eye for club balance, though not to the degree of his predecessor. He is the former manager of Attereg GU, a team very self-conscious about its home city's relative isolation. In fans' eyes, their success is a way to put the city on the map. Can he do the same for the country?

(Well, probably not. See above.)

There's a bunch of random background information but I probably won't have space to go into it in the RPs, so never mind any of that.

The particular shade of pink on the national flag is sort of a nationwide laughingstock, so the team plays in white, with pink just for the numbers and suchlike. A new uniform is on its way, hopefully, but people are being lazy about it.

I can't take credit for all the ideas here--some of them are other people's but they've let me run with them.

All text is, ICly, in Earad, and transliteration retcons are likely at any time!

With a new Brevity Challenge Cup looming large on the horizon it has become apparent that we really do not have a proper side to compete. The 1st side Sea Dragons are busy with training as a new manager is in place and the squad’s top goal scorer and defensive hammer have both hung up their boots. All signs point to a continuation of greatness for them in World Cup 60.

Most professional level players are busy furthering their careers in a new era of the VAFK or have elected to pursue collegiate greatness in a newly structured University level playing field.

As usual the U19 girls are busy in the AOCAF and are still kicking butt and taking names.

So who do we send? Easy answer. The Errion Vega FK Youth Academy will send a squad comprised of it best and brightest 12-14 year old players. That’s right, the outside world will get its first glimpse of the future of Vegai Footy.

Manager: Cynaveko Uj’oryk Age: 21
Uj’oryk is a brilliant defensive tactician in the mold of Mace himself. So expect the Tidal Surge to be seen as usual. His opponents argue that the flexing formation used by the Sea Dragons is a bit too complicated for youth players of this age. Uj’oryk argues that if they are going to grow into players capable of making the national side they had better learn it now.

Formation: Tidal Surge (3-2-2-1-2) Style -2 defensive

LB 15 13 M Dajid Ton'om

Want to know more about these players? So do I. They are only 12-14 years old and this will help develop them.

Oblique Strategy: Water

Water. It ebbs and flows, covering all it encounters to the best of it’s ability. So must we ebb and flow with the rhythm of the match in order to make the best use of our own abilities. This is our advantage, our one true path to absolute victory.

Please reset my rank from 9 to 2 to reflect the age of my players.

RP Permissions: As always you can do anything short of killing my players without permission.

Style modifier: -1

Oblique strategy: Do the last thing first

Code: Select all
It seems at this point that many strikers are unwilling to defend and many defenders are unwilling to go forward, and for the Corgis, it is requested of all the players to put on the forefront of their mind the thing they would least want to do on the pitch.

Manager - Image Powell Pieran
Astograth's 53 year-old Citiz manager had never, in three previous outings, taken a full-strength team to the Copa Rushmori, considering it a minor tournament useful for trying out players prior to the World Cup qualifiers. This time around he did, though, motivated by the loss of Iturributan players and the international retirement of captain Dei Ormache. The result was... less than satisfactory, as Olibondeka failed to advance from the group stage. But before the qualifiers there's still the Brevity Challenge Cup to play for, and defending his title is precisely what Pieran intends to do!

Now, for Pieran's oblique strategy: Because we all want Astograth in the World Cup final, the players all need to get a good run-out yet be fresh for the important matches. Therefore, Pieran will be trying to water the talent like he does his plants back home! Doesn't matter he only has some potted cacti.

Starting XI:
#1 - GK - Cheru Larretape - Age 30 - Royal Rumiatzi – 34 caps, 54 goals against, 9 clean sheets
At last, Larretape is free of Zernin Aira and can take the number one shirt for himself. Not very tall at all, but his lightning-quick reflexes, agility and leadership set him apart from most keepers. Long-time captain of top domestic club Royal Rumiatzi, he has paid his dues and then some to finally launch a consistent international career.

#5 - LCB - Urtzi Galard - Age 27 - Royal Rumiatzi – 55 caps, 1 goal
Normally a left-back and veteran of three Di Bradini Cups, his quick, offensive runs down the wing are a constant threat. Tireless for the full ninety and an expert crosser, he can seamlessly swap positions with the left winger, and can indeed be used in that position if required. Has nonetheless adapted very well to Pieran playing him as a centre-back, but is usually the first to go if the defense is leaking.

#16 - CB - Ubelteso Adin - Age 31 – Image Raynor City United - 98 caps, 4 goals
A rock in the defence of one of the best clubs in the world, Adin is a smart player renowned for his smart challenges and his skill at covering empty space in just the right spot to cut off attacks. Considered the successor of Milian Erburu, Astograth's now internationally retired star centre-back, but has arguably accomplished much more for both club and country. Turned down the option of playing for Iturributa, owing his allegiance to the national side and former team Royal Rumiatzi, which has earned him the love of the fans.

#3 - LCB – Abdoulaye Bocandé - Age 24 – Echegoyan FC – 22 caps, 1 goal
Although fully Zenegalese, Bocandé has been naturalised by Astograth after his standout performances in the First Division, originally joining from the Tamarindo league. A crucial part of Echegoyan FC's rise to the top and eventual championship run, he is a blood-and-guts defender with no fear of crunching tackles or studs to the face.

#15 - DM – Inguma Sapano - Age 30 - Image Yastrabi – 62 caps, 3 goals
Zorion Legeren and Agoztar Gorstiaga, the two supremely talented defensive midfielders who rotated for Olibondeka for the past two World Cups, have pledged to play for Iturributa, leaving Pieran to draw their replacements from a pool of ageing, unskilled and uncapped players. The solution was to convince Inguma Sapano, also Iturributan by birth, to return to the team that hadn't called him up since the seventh edition of the Copa Rushmori, where he had the honour of being captain. Sapano himself has swapped shirts several times in the KPFA League since arriving to play for Šede Island Shadows; a mobile man good at covering spaces and opening up the field.

#11 - LM - Urgutz Belarte (C) - Age 30 - Image Atlético Jutense – 143 caps, 20 goals
Coming in from the demanding Primeirona, Belarte brings to the table his repertoire of tricks and dribbles, which combine with his precise crosses to make him a very dangerous man down the left wing. Very rarely cuts into the box, but when he does his carefully placed shots are a challenge for even the best keepers. The third most-capped of all time for Astograth, he is one of Olibondeka's most beloved icons. Handed the captain's blue armband after the international retirement of Dei Ormache due to his veterancy and light-hearted manner in contrast with Sarlange's hot-headedness or Adin's morosity.

#10 - RM - Itzeder Unzueta - Age 30 - Image FKM – 105 caps, 18 goals
Unzueta combines deadly crossing with great shooting skill to turn him into a valuable asset both in and around the box. Tremendously talented, he tends to be selfish with the ball, and his attitude often gets him in trouble with teammates and manager alike. Personally, Pieran doesn't care for him very much, but Unzueta's top-notch performances leaves him no choice but to send him out. Moreso when he is a key part of FKM, Champions' Cup winners and multi-time KPFA League champions.

#8 - AM - Otz Lasuen - Age 28 - Image Iturributa United – 64 caps, 10 goals
Lasuen has successfully taken up the mantle of Estebe Bularte as team playmaker, setting up Astograth's numerous attacks and occasionally finishing them off with a strong right boot. Though tempted by foreign leagues, Lasuen stayed true to the domestic league; now he plays for Iturributa United in the brand new Premier Division, having collected a Champions' Cup runner-up medal following last season's impressive campaign

#21 - LCF - Ikatz Ansotegi - Age 27 - Ituraitz FC - 43 caps, 16 goals
Known for scoring absurd amounts of goals in the Astograthian league thanks to his sheer speed, height and brute force. Built like a rugby forward and nicknamed 'The Locomotive' because he barges through the defense till he scores. Put five past Melbergia in a World Cup 58 qualifier, making him the first and only man to do so for Olibondeka, and has accrued an impressive ratio considering he has played most matches as a substitute.

#18 - CF - Hurko Atristain - Age 26 - Image Red Star Severny – 21 caps, 14 goals
Consistent scoring earned him a transfer to Red Star Severny from Urbizania Wanderers, then a call-up to Copa Rushmori VIII and the Brevity Challenge Cup, then the World Cup qualifiers and the finals themselves. Has responded everywhere he's played and racked up a crazy goal ratio for someone generally brought off the bench; needless to say, the fans are very excited to see if he can replicate Dei Ormache's poaching style.

#9 - RCF - Soter Sarlange - Age 31 - Image CR Submiria – 150 caps, 73 goals
Sarlange is a rude, egocentric striker who relies on his speed and height to score with unusual frequency. Thrice top scorer of the Astograthian First Division during his time at Ituraitz FC and top scorer of the national team by a mile; he and Ormache knew each other inside out and were absolutely deady when played up front together for club and country. Now one of the top strikers in the highly competitive Primeirona, Sarlange is lethal and he knows it.

Substitutes:
#13 - GK - Aztore Irungarai - Age 29 - Image Ousevale Borough – 13 caps, 16 goals against, 4 clean sheets
Reached the semifinals of the Champions' Cup with Sporting Iturributa before packing his bags for Krytenian giants Ousevale Borough. Has a high chance of rotating with Larretape due to form; at the Brevity Challenge Cup he proved decisive in the semifinal shootout against then-three-time world champions Aguazul. Won himself a place in the final, a clean sheet and a shiny gold medal; has declined playing for Iturributa on the grounds of professional interest.

#23 - GK – Urgutz Martinena - Age 27 - Image Juvillian Martinax – 1 cap, 2 goals against
Known as one of the best keepers in Erathore, Martinena hasn't had much of a chance with the national team. Made plenty of headlines back home after becoming the third Astograthian to win the Seria-A, but being third-choice makes it unlikely he'll get any playing time in the near future.

#4 - LCB – Yokin Arizmande - Age 19 – Image Niccostrato – 1 cap
A product of the Royal Vosaroni Antenelli youth academy, Arizmande moved to Erathore at an early age and has been first-team for several years in keeping with the Erathi custom of teenaged players. Nineteen, capped at the Campeonatos Rushmori de la Juventud and already winner of two Serias-A and a Schelia della Comunita; this defender's future may well outlast and outshine Powell Pieran.

#2 - CB - Dion Jantot - Age 28 - Royal Rumiatzi – 19 caps, 1 goal
Previously capped by his native country of Southern Cynocephali, Dion Jantot has been naturalised by Astograth and accepted the national team's call-up in light of the Cynoceph retirement from international football. A tall defender with plenty of talent, an excellent workrate and a solid club career; all-around a top-notch player still working his way up in Pieran's opinion.

#19 - RCB - Benat Uranga - Age 29 - Image Raktaghav Hathi – 50 caps, 2 goals
Normally a fast, technically gifted right-back whose crosses and slide tackles are accurate and deadly, Uranga is being played out of position by Pieran in what is a risky but interesting gamble. A very mobile defender could be a good replacement or complement to Bocandé, but his defensive skills are not quite up to snuff. Led Raktaghav Hathi of Kagdazka and Pazhujebu to a domestic cup win, the first title of their history.

#6 - DM – Galeano - Age 24 - The Army Club – 2 caps
Pieran is desperate for defensive midfielders, turns out all the decent ones are Iturributan; having to decide between thirty year-old Ion Arreta from Royal Rumiatzi and the much younger Galeano, of Tamarindian origin, he clearly went with the long-term option. Being honest, The Army Club are an outfit whose controversy far outweigh their footballing quality, and the naturalised Galeano is the standout performer and a logical choice when looking for diversity.

#17 - LM – Kauldi Ayatsbehers - Age 27 – Royal Rumiatzi – 8 caps, 1 goal
Previously overlooked in favour of Egoitz Malgor and Zuzen Barta, Ayatsbehers now has the chance to prove himself and eventually claim a permanent place over Belarte. Quick and a good crosser, he can swap positions at the back and up front if needed.

#14 - RM – Lukar Mendikoa - Age 29 - Image Emberton Reds – 35 caps, 2 goals
Part of Ituraitz FC during their most successful period, Mendikoa is an incredible sprinter. He can run the full length of the pitch at top speed, with or without the ball, and leave defenders in the dust, but the cross isn't always as accurate as he'd like. He can also hit the ball surprisingly hard for a man his size, which turns him into a credible goal threat.

#12 - AM - Aintza Lekea - Age 24 - Image Juvillian Martinax – 22 caps, 3 goals
Signed at a remarkably young age by the renowned FC Mildrid of Erathore and then transferred to the equally massive Juvillian Martinax, where he has quickly become one of the top-rated players in the Seria-A. Selfish with the ball and a bit of a diver, but his tricks and free kicks are brilliant. Suits Pieran just fine. A strong candidate for someday taking up the mantle of national team playmaker, though his attitude is strongly rejected by the Astograthian fans.

#20 - LCF – Tipi Nanklares - Age 28 – Image Ajax Khaldoon II – 45 caps, 13 goals
Obnoxious. Above all, Tipi Nanklares is obnoxious. He's taken a liking to riling up the opposing fans and players on the back of his great scoring ability, which has earned him a good few needless red cards. Not overly tall, but jumps surprisingly high and posseses quick enough feet to try to go past the keeper at every chance.

#22 - CF - Formerio Iturralde - Age 24 - Image Casuals Osteria – 10 caps
Dismissed by Iturributa United for his attitude and promptly snapped up by top Krytenian club Casuals Osteria, Iturralde is a self-centered goal machine not unlike a younger Soter Sarlange or the eternal Polarian forward Timo Skye. Missed call-ups after not impressing at the Copa Rushmori and Brevity Challenge Cup then ditched the option of playing for Iturributa when he noticed Astograth would probably get him more exposure. Back with a vengeance to Olibondeka and obsessed with getting his first, which may prove very elusive.

#7 - RCF – Iker Malik - Age 23 - Image Sporting Iturributa – 15 caps, 3 goals
The Erathi-born Malik has returned to play for his motherland and has all the characteristics you'd expect from someone bred in the play-style of Erathore: possession, dribbling, possession, speed, possession, lack of height, possession, agility, possession and trying to walk the ball into the net. Not a bad striker by any stretch of the imagination, though, having formed very successful partnerships with all kinds of forwards at Sporting Iturributa.

Captain: Urgutz Belarte
Free Kick Taker: Otz Lasuen
Penalty Taker: Soter Sarlange
Right Corner: Urgutz Belarte
Left Corner: Otz Lasuen

YES to all RP permissions, barring any career-ending incidents.

The Karditan Robber Barons

Starting 11

GK- Emanuel Portico. One of the most successful petty thieves in all of Karditan, he is incredibly agile and specializes in predicting the movements of adversaries. This helps tremendously in stopping shots, espicially PKs. He is dating Sweet Swing.

DL- Left Wing. A Pegasus hitman who's wanted on several charges of vandalism and arson, suspected of using small tornadoes and lightning to destroy the rival businesses of his clients.

DLC- Dorian Berard. One of Wing's clients, Berard runs Hardcore Cola, Karditan's leading soda distributor (at least since Popsi Cola's headquarters mysteriously burned down.)

DRC- Carnac Carson. The biggest personality in Karditani crime, Carnac is the guy you go to when you need a hookup. Everyone who is anyone has grabbed a beer with him at one point or another.

DR- Ivory Hilt. A freedom fighter from Vashameer, a county on the disputed border between Karditan and the semi-autonomous state of Ibex, he's actually most famous as the finest goat model; his horns are nothing short of magnificent. However, his fame hasn't stopped him from personally leading the resistance movement to officially sever Ibex from Karditan and take Vashameer with it.

ML- Pierre Le'viore. Runs the largest brothel in Sinsinatti, which isn't illegal by itself, but also traffics incredible amounts of 'hard stuff' below the floorboards. Considering Karditan is pretty lax when it comes to drugs, that's saying something.

MC- Sweet Swing. The one member of the Robber Barons who isn't actually a criminal, Swing is the daughter of famous Karditinian golfer Tyre McIron. She is in a pretty serious relationship with Emanuel Portico.

MR- Lightning Heart. A buffalo with a bad temper. Really, that's it. More assault & battery convictions than you can shake a horn at. Isn't very swift, but few people will want to be in his way if he gets up to speed.

FL- Mario Cansetta. One of the higher-ups in Korzado's organization (see below), Mario is in charge of collecting protection fees in Sinsinatti as well as organizing the official unofficial street racing league of Karditan. He's generally good-natured (he tries to convince his clients to pay their fees because he genuinely doesn't want to teach them a lesson), and is fiercely competitive. He'll take some bad shots, but it's damn hard for defenders to keep up with him.

FC- Silveen Eleco. The Man in Karditan. He runs Eleco Industries, Karditan's largest electronics company. He inherited the moderately-sized business from his father, Sylvester, and grew it to enormous proportions with brilliant economics and some underhanded business practices. He organized the Robber Barons and put together their entry into the World Cup.

FR- Korzado. One of the few Zebras in Karditan, Korzado runs the Illineigh Mafia. His influence can be found in almost every successful business venture in Illineigh, as well as many in Detrot and Sinsinatti. A legion of all types of creatures serve him, and he might be the only thing richer than Eleco in Karditan- but he doesn't flaunt his wealth like Eleco does. Almost all of it is re-invested, whether in businesses or bribes.

Manager- Sucker Punch. A unicorn who's special ability is illusions of the nefarious kind, Punch is a strategic genius who plans to bring Karditan to the top. He runs the most successful corporate advertising/propaganda firm in Fillydelphia.

Oblique strategy: What is the simplest solution?
What is the simplest solution? It is a question often asked by frustrated football fans and coaches alike. For the Liventians, that is to play old-school Route One football, using a traditional 4-4-2 system led by the captain at the back and vice-captain up front. Simple, proven, and effective.

'Oi Anch you tit!', one may well be thinking, 'You've only gone and done your roster backwards'. Indeed I have, for I have elected to do the last thing first. Strikers to come first on the teamsheet, keepers last. Midfielders in the middle. Some things never do change really.

FSSO Brevity Challenge Cup II Squad - Graham Hill Testimonial Squad
Tribute squad for legend Graham Hill as he retires from professional football

As you can see here at the FSSOFA Brevity Challenge Cup Participation Commitee, the body that organises our nations part in this tournament, we have undergone a number of budget cuts due to the nature of the football association "not giving a shit", as they put it so eloquentley in a recent memorandum. So instead of deploying the regular FSSO side to this tournament, due to fixture congestion, a collection of older greats of a past era in FSSO football have been invited to make up the squad. All players must be 32 years old, have 50 FSSO caps. Come on, this squad does not even have Sharp in it. If you lose too this you must be crap, fucking foreign degenerates gentle overseas friends. These elderly players are all being given a final chance to hammer a few past these disgusting foreign proles - the old guard return for a single last shot at glory. So just who is in the starting lineup?

The Coach - LIONEL CARLSTON
Centre forward/striker, 65 years old, retired, 163 caps, 70 goals

The FSSO striking legend and manager of newly promoted Gold League side Thagarnia used to hold the title of top scorer of all time for the FSSO. He has since been overtaken by the world class goal machine that is Lee Sharp, and Sam Needle approaches his total with haste, but regardless he is seen by many as one of the FSSO greats of 'the old days'. Although some dispute the real merit of this achievement, Carlston scored a hat-trick 45 years ago (at the age of 20) for the FSSO in a friendly with Starblaydia, a team that was only a few World Cups away from domination. Against an XI that included a young Simone Di Bradini, Carlston scored a 'perfect hat trick' of a left footed goal, right footed goal and a header in a shock 4-1 friendly win in Starblaydia's preperation period for World Cup 16, back when the FSSO national team was barely professional and a good 38 years from taking part in a World Cup cycle. Few remember the glorious day, but Carlston will hope to see similar heroics from his assemble of old guard heroes.

1 - JERRY WATCHMAN
Goalkeeper, 36 years old, plays for Bastion, 125 caps, 1 international goal

For years, Jerry was a fabulous servant for the FSSO who to this day continues to serve club and country. Although he was superceded by Daniel Belgrave shortly before the 'Golden Generation' finally achieved enough status to reach World Cup Qualifying, Watchman has played several times since and once scored a goal in a violent passionate match against savage neighbours Sameba, lobbing his opposite number from 80 yards to make it 4-3 (the game ended 5-3.)

2 - MATT BOYCE
Right back/centre back, 36 years old, retired, 75 caps

Matt Boyce came on to the international scene quite late and did appear in several World Cup Qualifying campaigns, however he became a bit of a cult hero in that time and somehow managed to score 18 goals from defence for Internazcionale in Erathore after moving there at the age of 30 - but never scored for his country. Now he has the chance to officially break his international duck.

4 - GRANT DAVIS
Centre back, 35 years old, plays for Ulsa, 182 caps, 8 goals

Ah yes, Grant Davis. The footballing arsehole personified. Tough-As-Nails Davis was brought up on an Ulsa council estate and likes to break a few bones (per match) where possible. Will probably be sent off several times and he is slow, but his tackles are devastating and he is handy with his head from corners. If he is on the pitch, the opposition best have several stretchers ready to go. No really, he will fuck your men up. Badly.

5 - BEN KEAN
Left centre back, 33 years old, plays for EMI FC (Erathore), 91 caps

Ben Kean is the opposite of Grant Davis - a consumate professional with no criminal record who can perform a precise, clean tackle as well as he can deliver a solid through ball to the midfield, and without using no less than several dozen offensive words every minute or so. Currentley playing out the end of his career at EMI FC in Erathore, Kean is a classy centre back who was a mainstay in the team before the arrival of Mike Humphrey on the international scene and will remain much loved for several off the line clearances and heroics in the aforementioned 5-3 win over Sameba in 2003.

3 - LUKE PHILLIPS
Left back, 35 years old, retired, 99 caps, 3 goals

Before the miracle of Joe Arne Pizza occured, Luke Phillips was widely regarded as the best left back in our footballing history - and on the eve of our smash into mainstream international football, he looked destined to be a key player. Unfortunately, during his 99th game for his country and having scored a brilliant 25 yard strike only minutes into the game, Phillips injured himself and his international career was over in an instant. Phillips overcame this heartbreak as he retired from international football and his club Revolutionaries at just 27 years old, and went straight into coaching. At 31 he became a manager and has since managed Silver League side Swenselona with distinction, earning them promotion from the Transition League, Bronze League, and a secure place in the Silver League.

11 - JOHN PALLISTER
Central midfielder/right midfielder, 34 years old, retired, 84 caps

John Pallister was always very unlucky in front of goal for the FSSO - hitting the woodwork 16 times in his international career but never scoring. However he made up for it in other ways as a solid supporting winger who delivered perfect crosses consistentley into the box for his compatriots, forming a good playing relationship with lanky centre forward Scott Daley - providing assists for 11 of Daley's 38 international goals. Pallister captained Sparta FC with distinction during his club career, taking them to a league title in his final season two years ago, with his team sliding down the top 5 in the last 2 seasons without his precense.

6 - CARL COFFA
Central defensive midfielder, 33 years old, plays for Hornchurch, 65 caps

Carl Coffa was perhaps a bit of a surprise inclusion, having always been more of a rotation player for the FSSO and has not been particularly admired by the public, labelled "Boring Old Coffa", in reference to the popular EBC sitcom "Boring Old Codger". He is a bloody bore to watch and talk to, and I say that being a witness to his expansive knowledge of bridges. However, he is a solid player and has showed admirable leadership at the overachieving Hornchurch for almost 15 years, making him a worthy inclusion in the midfield anchor role.

8 - STEVE THOMPSON
Central midfielder, 34 years old, plays for Ulsa, 205 caps, 27 goals

Thompson is a hero in the FSSO, and quite rightly. He has been incredible for his club side Ulsa, having been there for his whole career, and has been a key player for his country for years. Usually the international captain, he sets down the armband for the legend that is Graham Hill over the course of this tournament. However he will likely continue to raise his incredible caps tally, having been playing for the FSSO senior side for 16 years. Thompson is a cult figure in his homeland and will continue to be so for a long time.

7 - DAVID THOMAS
Left winger/right winger, 34 years old, retired, 102 caps, 50 goals

Thomas is part of the "Old Guard" generation that so dazzled despite being being denied competitive participation due to ongoing civil disturbances. He didn't come into the international fold until he was 25, but when he did he played regularly for 6 years, amounting 102 caps - and even more impressively 50 goals, usually from the wing. In the last couple of years before the end of his career he was not selected and fell out of favour, but this star burnt brightly and despite his age has continued playing in the non league and will most probably cause issues for other teams on the wing with his pace, dribbling and finishing.

9 - SCOTT DALEY
Centre forward, 32 years old, plays for Falourr, 132 caps, 38 goals

Daley is a relic of a simpler time; a 6ft 7in giant who serves as a useful target man who cannot be beaten in the air. After several years in Valladares playing for Edmonton, the 32 year old has returned to the FSSO to play out his career with newly promoted (and hometown club) Falourr. This lanky centre forward scores occasionally and provides plenty of assists for his teamates. He truly is a hard worker and is treated with great affection by the Euran fans, who refer to him simply as "Scotty".

10 - GRAHAM HILL CAPTAIN
Striker, 41 years old, retiring after this tournament (currentley at Hornchurch), 159 caps, 53 goals

So this is the guy it's all about. Graham Hill is, to put it bluntly, one of the most popular men in the country - he could probably run for parliament on the manifesto of "I'm me." Hill has played for his country for 21 years, and somehow has only amassed 159 caps - perhaps because he has only played 25 games since he turned 34. The arrival of the Sharp/Needle partnership pushed him and Scott Daley out of the starting lineup as a partnership, but he remained an idol of Sharp and his mentor, serving an invaluable role as a leader in the squad for years. Hill truly is a legend, despite not having as good a record as Carlston, Thomas, Sharp or Needle. He will remain a legend for some time, and this testimonial squad is a tribute to him.

THE REST

13. Andrew Fasbun - GK - 38 - Retired - 90 caps - 0 goals

This competition, in terms of Krytenian continuity, will be taking place entirely in the inner reaches of Rami Niblick's brain; as such Krytenia will be represented by eleven sentient, human sized glasses of water. As Rami is patriotic (and borderline insane), these glasses of water will retain Krytenia's maximum ranking.

This is my first RP in the Brevity. Here goes...50 words exactly.

Sweet buggering limpets, I have no idea who the FSSO play first. I do know our group contains Earent (anons), Ancharmunn (proles), and Krytenia (favourites.) Still, our team with an average age somewhere between 30 and 40 have a good chance of finishing first or a strong second. Bloody foreigners.

The Holy Empire Football Association is aware that the Brevity Challenge Cup is taking place.

However, they have forgotten what it consists of, and are only vaguely aware that they've signed up.

Because of the confusion, HEFA are sending a school of haddock.

None of the usual Imperial legends are participating.

The style modifier is +5.

The ranking is a measly 1.

No one in the Holy Empire cares about the tournament.

The nameless haddock, on the other hand, are very excited.

How you deal with the necessarily aquatic nature of the haddock is up to you; but please don't eat them.

The oblique strategy is, by necessity, 'water'.

Haddock need water.

First Challenges
Matchday 2 will be scored on Monday evening.

Your RP must be precisely fifty words long.

Word of the day, sent by Dictionary.com to my phone this afternoon: Phatic

Courtesy of Polar Islandstates - your next RP must begin with the last letter of your last RP/roster post. Or number, if that's what you finished on.
Didn't post before cut-off? Your next RP must begin with the letter U, with the second word in your RP beginning with the letter L. As in, Unfashionably Late (but not that).

Any Other Business

I'm still accepting challenges by TG if you want to contribute.

And I really would like as many of you as possible to get in the four word submissions, by the end of the group games, in time for the first knock-out round.

"Yup, we haven't defeated them yet."

"Well, this phatic communication is rather boring."

"Uh-huh, these pesky cops are only letting us say fifty words."

"It's too bad you got arrested right before the tournament began."

"Yeah, I reall wish I could be playing right now."

"Adios."

"Livin' la vida loca, am I right?" Mario chuckled as he twirled some pink panties in the air.

Pierre cocked an eyebrow. "And where did you get that?"

"Oh, some fan threw it to me after I scored the tying goal."

"Was it that fat guy in drag?"

Mario grimaced.

"Good Lord, even in my own head we struggle." Rami mused. It had been a hard evening - hence imagining all that water - and work was the last thing on his mind. Now all the office phatitudes were done with, he wished to be alone. Possibly with some haddock...

“To be completely phatic, yes. But what we must remember is that we did well against much more experienced competition.”

“Is that a nice way to call them old?”

Unusually long. That's how one would describe the names of the nations in our group. Put together, the names include 85 characters. Obviously, the founders of these nations were quite phatic with their writing. However, the goals in the Equestrians' first match were not as abundant, as none were actually scored.
