I'll try and get a list together of people who role-played at least once in both WLC 11 and WLC 12 - then we can go from there.

Congratulations to The Kytler Peninsulae for winning the thirteenth championship, and for hosting a smooth tournament. If nothing else, this competition proved the usefulness of the AWR Rankings (an update for which can be found below) and the capability of TKP's self-created MyLax scorinator.

I was disappointed by the major loss of RPing for WLC 13. Previous editions have grown in size and interest; the tournament I hosted previous to this one took up five-and-a-half pages of posts. This one barely scraped the third page. I very much hope this is not a trend, but just an outlier, since the past has indicated things can only look up for international lacrosse.

Anyway, hope for maybe a bit of discussion here. Enjoy some new rankings, and see you all back here for another WLC in ~3 months.

A few things:

A) Congrats to Kytler Peninsulae on their first championship and for hosting a smooth tournament.

B) When did you first generate these rankings? I might have missed that, but if they're completely new, post-WLC 13, then shouldn't Kytler Peninsulae be ranked at first? Again, not an objection or complaint, just curiosity.

C) Are these rankings purely for the fun of it, or are these being used for scorination, like to (even slightly) weight the scorinator the way other sports have used? I don't particularly have a preference one way or another, I'm just curious.

D) I have a feeling the RPing was an outlier. Unfortunately, the departure of some of the entrants, like Sarzonia and Delaclava (for example) who are usually regular RP'ers highlighted the usual lack of RPing from about half the contestants (which is about normal in every tournament).
I know in my case I've had a harder and harder time writing about a sport I know comparatively little about while trying to avoid rehashing the same character plots. Hopefully, I'll have some relatively new material for the next edition of the tournament.

A) Thank you. It's actually the first team world championship that any of my nations have won in an NS RPing career dating back to 2003 and incorporating three nations.
B) These were first generated for WLC13, post-WLC12, but stretch back three championships (so even the post-WLC12 rankings dated back to WLC10).
C) They are used in scorination, but are not intended to have a dramatic impact - indeed, MyLAX and the AWRs were built together to create only a modest rank impact. (I later realised that having the ranking on a 0-1 scale is extremely useful should the MyLAX formula ever be ported to xkoranate, as it is identical to that used in the Olympics, for which xkoranate was largely designed.) Essentially, in MyLAX, your AWR value is added to your expected goal total, and subtracted from that of your opponent. As such, me and CC have approximately a 1.5-goal advantage against a debutant. For comparison, the maximum RP bonus confers a 3.5-goal advantage, and the random element is +/- 4 goals for each team. So Margaret is still the prime determinant of results, RP bonus is second, and rank third. Which, I think, reflects the will of the community.
D) I don't understand the lack of RPing myself. I started to wonder if it was me, as the Baptism of Iron (which I also hosted) was horribly under-RPed as well. I do think that it was a coincidence, though - we've lost Newmanistan as well as Sarzonia and Delaclava, and when you take those away that's most of the last few WLCs of RPing gone.

How is it that I never manage to find the signup thread in time? I mean, I know this one is very late, but I've never actually seen a signup thread on here, even though there's been about 4 WLCs that have gone by which I intended to take part in! Hopefully I'll actually find the signup thread next time!

1, Congrats for the win Kytler and a job well done hosting.

2, Same with me as the Fanboyists I tried to post rp's throughout the championship but its harder to write one up when I barely know anything about the sport. This happened with me during the World Volleyball Expo and is currently happening to me at the NS Twenty20 Championships. (Cricket)

RE: Championships

Yeah, one of the things I've liked about the WLC is that it's a tournament that's pretty open, and prone to first-time champions. It's one of the few tournaments where it's not unusual for someone to at least threaten a title on their first try.

RE: Rankings and Scorination

That's what I figured. The only lacrosse scorinator I was familiar with outside of Xkhoranate was Sarzonia's old-school Laxinator, which didn't utilize rankings at all. I did notice the scores had fluctuated less and generally been lower than they had in previous editions of the tournament. Now I'm thinking that has to do with the scorinator. Just an observation; no need for a reply on that unless I got that wrong.

RE: Roleplaying

I think one of the things that's led generally (partly to the wide-open nature of the tournament, but also) the low-level of general roleplay for the WLC is just the low-level of awareness for the sport outside of North America, and the lack of comprehensive knowledge about the sport; even in the United States (can't speak for Canada), Lacrosse is probably most popular in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, and even there it's still a borderline niche sport. Basically, people like to write what they know, and it shows when you have tournaments for comparatively less-popular sports.

As for the BoI...not to get World Bowl stuff involved here, but the reason it became a very, very conditional part of the World Bowl is the lack of RPing the pre-tournament has attracted in recent editions. It's not you; don't get discouraged.

I know what you mean about both the BoI (glad it wasn't just me - indeed, Cassadaigua noted at the time that she agreed to it only because it reduced the WB/WC overlap) and the lack of knowledge (heck, I don't know all that much about lacrosse myself, and I was the first WLC host under my former guise of Kura-Pelland). When you have a niche sport lke this, and a couple of major RPers drop out (three, if you count Mytannion having RL get in the way this go-around), you're in trouble.

Personally, I've tried to work around my lack of knowledge of the finer points of the sport through a combination of research (my reference to a shot velocity in my RP of the final was possible thanks to a chance encounter on YouTube with the MLL All-Star shot contest while I was looking up other YouTube lacrosse videos) and character/national background emphasis (lacrosse going from a niche sport of the wealthy to genuine high-profile national sport courtesy of an ethnically diverse team in general and Ock Fils in particular).

Glad people think the scorinator is working. Would it be useful to anyone (particularly thinking future hosts here) if we could get the MyLAX formula into xkoranate? If people do think that, I'll inquire with CH. It's a pretty simple formula, and the AWRs are directly compatible with xkoranate's Olympic-inspired 0-1 ranking system, so the only bit of confusion might be on dovetailing with xkoranate's scalable RP bonus.

Seeking input as to what people are feeling right now. Lacrosse is (fairly obviously) on one of its down trends, and I'm getting literally zero participation in the WLC (to the point where I haven't felt able to scorinate because it's me spending time on something that won't be reciprocated). Should WLC14 be abandoned and restarted at a later date when interest in lacrosse is back up? Should I just scorinate everything in one go to finish? Or should I continue to scorinate as normal?

I think it's a bad time in terms of activity for everyone. It's coming to that point in the year when everyone has final exams, graduation, parties, and a lot of other stuff going on.

I've been wanting to RP (and sorry about my last mistake..that was a :palm: moment) but I've had a lot come up in my life recently (family hospitalizations and work among other things.)

Perhaps start it up again sometime in June or July when there is a lot more activity from everyone? Or just wait and ask this question at a later date but do postpone it until further notice.

Personally, I am very interested. There is also a good RP basis for my nation's participation, as our second city, San Diego, has seen an explosion in amateur lacrosse teams in the last 15 years or so IRL. I've been on sick leave for a while now, and unless it turns out I have something very serious indeed, I will probably be more occupied with other things by July. Still, I'll probably join a tournament whether or not I am particularly free to RP at the time.

Rp activity over the past five World Lacrosse Championships, total RP counts do not include RPs by the hosts.

WLC 10
Total Rps: 76
Total Match days: 14
Average Rps per-match day: 5.42

WLC 11
Total Rps: 83
Total Match days: 16
Average Rps per-match day: 5.18
Increase/ decrease in RPs: + 4%

WLC 12
Total Rps: 112
Total Match days: 14
Average Rps per-match day: 8
Increase/ decrease in RPs: +34%

WLC 13:
Total Rps: 25
Total Match days: 13
Average Rps per-match day: 1.92
Increase/ decrease in RPs: - 316%

WLC 14:
Total Rps: 27
Total Match days: 10
Average Rps per-match day: 2.7
Increase/ decrease in RPs: +8%

WLC 15: (through two MDs; updated daily)
Total RPs: 16
Total Match days: 2
Average Rps per-match day: 8
Increase/ decrease in RPs: -68.7%

Slowly..that is the word I can use the WLC isn't like it was, even though i've only been part of it since 12 the numbers don't lie. Hopefully the 15th edition the numbers will bounce back maybe not like WLC 11 & 12 but if there's a total of 40+ rps that should be called a success.

Without including information on major holidays and/or other NS Sports events, it's hard to say what can productively be generalized from this data. Also, slightly related, is the decline similar to that for other (let's face it) minor sports, or even NS Sports in general?

It's also a sport more or less confined to the US and Canada as I understand it, at least traditionally, so that's a difficulty. Too, professional lacrosse in the US is not exactly prominent, and investment seems to have flagged since the early years of the MLL. Lacrosse seems not to be doing significantly worse than cricket, a far more global sport.

[2]Also, slightly related, is the decline similar to that for other (let's face it) minor sports, or even NS Sports in general?

[3]It's also a sport more or less confined to the US and Canada as I understand it, at least traditionally, so that's a difficulty. Too, professional lacrosse in the US is not exactly prominent, and investment seems to have flagged since the early years of the MLL. Lacrosse seems not to be doing significantly worse than cricket, a far more global sport.

[1]WLC 13 took place around Feb. 2012, the first WLC 14 started in late may('12) but was abandoned due to an exterme lack of rp which was hosted by Liventia, which that was held in may which schools getting out for the summer contributed to it's abandonment. And for six months Lacrosse on NS Sports other than the Olympics lay abandoned and almost forgotten.

[2]The decline may also have something related to that or even directly related to that. When I first starting rping on NS Sport there was the World Indoor Soccer Championships, World Softball Classic, Beach Soccer Cup and Volleyball Expo which small in both terms of numbers and length of time.
However though so far they way it looks WLC 15 is showing some bounce back unlike the past two editions. Like Sarzonia who worked hard to keep the WLC fairly relevant and alive, i'll do the same thing.

[3]Actually lacrosse is mainly played on the east coast of the US and Canada, but it is the national summer sport of Canada.

Domestic sports leagues

NS is just a state of mind, time has no boundary nor does our sanity.

Please ignore my senseless ramblings, I'm getting old.

I'll try to get to RPing more, but my schedule makes it hard to RP on weekdays, so I'll probably get around to doing some RPing on the weekend, maybe another couple of guides for Rovegia and it's nice to see the guides being used in a couple of RPs. I thank you all for your participation so far, let's hope that this will help turn around this trend of declining participation.

I wasn't confused about where lacrosse is most mainstream, but a lot of high schools have lacrosse teams here in Southern California, too. Anyway, that's all that need be said on the topic of real-world lacrosse, I'd wager 8)

In Western Canada where I live, field lacrosse isn't too popular but quite a few people play Box Lacrosse as a summer alternative to hockey.

Ah, the national summer sport of Canada. And I always thought the national summer sport was drinking. No wait, that's a winter sport, we just call it "curling."
