squirrels are more popular than llamas

Postby The Blaatschapen » Wed Mar 07, 2012 6:53 pm

So, The Blaatschapen Office For Useless Statistics (TBOFUS) sorted through all the nations in the game (from the last data dump) and figured out which animal is more popular.

And it's close... It's very close.

llama 202
squirrel 204

On almost 100K nations the difference between llamas and squirrels is only 2. However, some nations have plural animals, so let's add those:

llamas 2
squirrels 1

The end score would be:

llama(s) 204
squirrel(s) 205

So, the age old question of which animal is not cooler may not have been answered, but the question of which animals is more popular is. Albeit with minimal difference :o

TBOFUS would like to note that animals like the 'five eyed llama' (1 instance) are not counted in this total. And, no, that would not equalize llamas with the squirrels. TBOFUS has also found an instance of the soviet squirrel and the squirril (sic). But we believe that these variants are not proper llamas nor squirrels.

And now for a top ten:

    eagle 3220
    lion 2830
    wolf 2218
    dragon 1638
    bear 1407
    parhean rhinoceros 1361
    tiger 1335
    dog 1270
    deer 1076
    cat 1010

It seems a lot of nations out there have the eagle. Number 6 on the list is also quite noteworthy. TBOFUS also would like to add that there are 3 'parhean rhinocerous' running around.

The Blaatschapens former national animal the sheep only scores 212. Less than the 'animal' called 'human' which scores 398. (We're aware that this might be forbidden by the rules... unfortunately, because of the way the data was processed, TBOFUS cannot give a list of nations which uses this). At least sheep are still more popular than the pony (184).

And now for some fun 'animals':
the mods say i may not use humans as animal or currency, or use my custom fields to troll or be obscene (2 instances)
the mods say our custom fields may not feature humans or any part thereof, obscenities, racial slurs, or controversial statements (1)

A grand total of 28930 different 'animals' were found.

Enjoy, and next time TBOFUS might give currencies a try. TBOFUS is fully aware that there might be some bugs in its data processing methods. It will iron those out hopefully.

108 nations have condor as their national animal.

167 scorpion countries were counted.

Also, mods, with a few adaptations (mostly in the way I grep things), I might be able to get those nations using 'human' as a national animal pretty much served on a platter(the nations, not their animals). Just say 'uncle' and I'll get around to it in the upcoming days (and I'll naturally publish it in a GHR).

I'm really surprised that 'Liger' didn't make the top ten. I figured somebody like Parhe was using it for their puppet army, considering how often it shows up on new and classic nations. I've also noticed a recent increase in "honey badger", which seems to be a moderately successful meme.

Why is having humans as currency or animals forbidden by the rules? We openly have slave trade threads in GE&T, so it can't be because of the slaving, and obviously, there are all the animal nations out there, so why not as 'national animal'? Logically, from an animal's point of view, humans would indeed be other animals.

Also, I take it my Samozniy Tiger doesn't end up counting towards the total?

So many people were using national animals to troll specific ethnicities and/or other groupings that we simply banned the use entirely. Otherwise we end up having to justify when and whether to leave "Jew" and remove "Kike". Or "Nazi". Or "Woman". And while slavery and Nazi RP is allowed, not everyone in the game is aware that those are roleplaying conventions, or even that RP is part of our game.

259 singular and 2 plural.

296 singular ligers and 3 plural ligers.
408 singular honey badgers and 2 plural honey badgers.
And Fris, Parhe has his own top ten animal as you can see :)

Samozaryadnyastan wrote:Also, I take it my Samozniy Tiger doesn't end up counting towards the total?

Not towards the total for tigers, no, if that is what you are asking. The problem with doing that are genuine animals like "spider monkey" (33) and fantasy hybrids like the dogcat (1) or catdog (2). I'd have to make a list of genuine animals and sort everything according to that in a smart way, the effort vs. reward does not compare.

The Cinistran government want to congratualte all those nations having eagle as their national animal. At least this is one wise decision from said nations. Squirrels and llamas are both good prey for eagles, though.
"Send forth all legions! Do not stop the attack until the city is taken! Slay them all!"
>Can I invade other people's regions?

Yes. The practice of "region crashing," where a group of nations all move to a region with the aim of seizing the WA Delegate position, is part of the game. Certain groups within NationStates are particularly adroit at this, and can attack very quickly.
>Once I've taken over a region, can I eject everyone else?

You can try. Invader Delegates tend to have very little Regional Influence, which makes ejecting long-time residents difficult. But Delegates can be as kind, generous, evil, or despotic as they wish. It's up to regional residents to elect good Delegates.

519.

And now I have a complete list: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3134193/animals.txt (400 KB)

So any more questions of "how many of this, or that" can be found in the above document.

You know... I've never seen a squirrel. Ever.

(I live in a country where we don't have them.)

I've seen a few llamas though. I like llamas. They spit on people, and they don't apologise or take no prisoners when they do it.

EDIT: How many nations have "yak" out of interest.
