“Nervous, Your Majesty?”

“Nervous? Over this? Don't be ridiculous. I've done this a million times.”

“If you say so, m'lord.”

Grand Duke Aitor IV peered at his aide. What'd he done to look nervous? His hands weren't shaking. He wasn't sweating nor stammering nor twitching. He made sure of all that. To look nervous was to look weak, and he couldn't afford any of that whatsoever. Especially not now that there were all these new 'HD' cameras everywhere, and that there'd be a hundred of them focusing on his face out there on the pitch. A simple hesitation would be enough to put doubts in certain people's minds... and perhaps trigger something deeper.

“Say, boy. What makes you think I'm nervous?”

“Oh, nothing, Your Majesty. You have already exlained you are not nervous at all.”

“Yes, I know, but what made you think that in the first place?”

“Oh... I don't know, m'lord. You were, uh, looking distant. As if focusing. Only natural, of course, don't mind me.”

“That's alright. How much more till we go out?”

“Any minute now, Your Majesty, according to what Mr. Gandiaga said.”

***

Rulers of this kind are bred from birth to make public appearances. For a Grand Duke of Astograth, it is just as important as the actual running of the country. Aitor IV knew this when he stepped out onto the pitch of Knights' Stadium, Olibondeka and the Erathi national team neatly lined up in front. The monarch had been to many of these sporting events, but they still took his breath away every time. The ground itself, full up to the rafters, the stands a festival of colour. From the roof hung the flags of all 36 competing Rushmori nations, encircling the pitch and waving in the heavy afternoon breeze. The grass was freshly cut and lightly watered, the noise defeaning... the football would be superb.

He and Eneko Gandiaga, president of the FAF, passed in front of both sets of players, shaking their hands, smiling and wishing good luck. Aitor knew the cameras were on him. That certain people were glued to their screens, looking for the most minute sign of imperfection in him. And he knew they found nothing until he was handed the microphone.

It was easy. All he had to say was 'Astograth welcomes you all to the eight Copa Rushmori!' in English, which he had been taught to speak perfectly. A cheesy, meaningless phrase thrown in to have the Grand Duke say something. But it was a dry day in Rumiatzi, and when he was handed the microphone he realised he hadn't had a drink of water in at least a couple of hours. He kept his poker face on, though, and "Astogra-" was the result as his voice cracked. He swallowed and carried on, but in the back of his mind he knew that certain people, somewhere, somehow, had just set down their cigars and were picking up the phone.

Welcome to the Copa Rushmori!
Unfamiliar territory for the FSSO as they enter their first Copa Rushmori, writes Dan Naylor

Former FSSO favourite Dean Klaspec, who scored 45 goals in 96 international appearances, commented once that the closest rivals are those who compete in good spirit. This should be motivating for the FSSO, who hold several good natured rivalries in Rushmore - such as Erathore - and have finally made their way into a Copa Rushmori. Not all FSSO rivalries in this region are so good natured, such as the rivalry with Mytannion, but when it comes to home games that's what tanks are for.

After a poor World Cup 58 qualifying campaign and an unlucky Cup of Harmony 50 exit, Ben Randall hung onto his job with his fingertips, with his job reportedly being saved by a plea from the players to the FSSO FA. Expectations are not high for this tournament, but the FSSO will be expected to show spirit and if the results become too embarrasing Randall may finally be cut loose. Dimitri Campbell however, his assistant manager, has led the youth team to impressive friendly victories recently and could be a viable replacement should Randall go.

Other candidates for the job should the FA lose patience with Randall include Lajuno boss Jake Robins and Directus manager Clark Carsen. However the managers job is safe - for now. As for the squad, Lee Sharp and Sam Needle continue to show their class up front but other forwards will press them for places. It is in midfield and defence where changes seem imminent, with Dennis Arnold already having been shafted for youngster Nick Feeney and Carlos Aduna shoved out by Clive Dawson and John Buckson.

Western Cuba Off to Good Start

Jorge Ramirez

Echegoyan, Astrogath- Marquez and his boys are off to a good start in their Copa Rushmori debut. Western Cuba defeated Aquillian 1-0 in a game that mostly was played on the defensive side for Western Cuba. A defensive side which is usually shaky for Western Cuba stood sturdy against the Aquillian offense. Ramon Chavez played phenomenal and impressed everyone. Chavez beat his opponent almost every time he was in a one on one match up with an Aquillian player. Chavez also played a key part in Western Cuba's sole goal in the game also. Chavez spotted an open Che Lopez up the field and crossed it to him. Lopez then drove up the field almost unopposed till a defender abandoned his post in order to stop Lopez. Lopez then passed it to an open Edgardo Mendoza who finessed the ball towards the corner of Aquillian's goal giving Western Cuba the win.

" I felt I played a tremendous role in today's game and I feel proud as a result. However though I have to remain alert that this was only the first game in this edition of the Copa Rushmori. Their's still at least four more games to go and I have to play as hard as I did today throughout the rest of the Copa. ", comments a joyful Chavez after the game.

The next match day for Western Cuba proves to be a bigger challenge in their first Copa Rushmori. They have to face Queer Poco el Mono Ara, the #9 ranked team in the world. If your wondering Western Cuba is ranked #84 in the world. Which isn't terrible after all their are hundreds of countries that play soccer in the world.

If your interested though in heading to Astograth and somehow sneak a ticket to Western Cuba's next game then make sure you travel Urbizania which is the next stop for Western Cuba in match day 2. Television coverage will be on WCSN and if you have tickets to the game Edgardo Mendoza will be signing autographs an hour before the game, so if you don't have a Mendoza's autograph and you have a ticket to the game Match Day 2 is a good time to get one.
Now known as the Technological State of Adros, the successor state of Western Cuba

Tim O'Donahaue looks on during the match.
Darmen began it's Copa Rushmori Campaign with a 2-2 draw against Alfabet Soup. Tor Tong Lee scored twice in the second half as Darmen came back from a 2-0 halftime deficit. Tor Tong Lee comented in the post match press conference, saying, "Overall it was a well fought match. I felt both sides wanted the win, and that makes for a great game, both for the fans and the players. I felt we could've done more to secure the win, but we'll take the point and move on with the rest of the matches yet to be played."

Darmen struggled during the first half, as ABK dominated possesion. Manager Tim O'Donahaue made several changes at half time, switching Luca Cormio out for young forward Roberto Gregorio, who seemed to open up the Abdian defense with his runs throughout the second half. It took star Darmeni midfielder, Tor Tong Lee, all of nine minutes in the second half to score Darmen's first goal of the Copa Rushmori. The rest of the team responded quickly, and Darmen was soon keeping possesion of the ball much better than they had in the first half. Zach Preston was the one to set up Lee for his second goal, as Prestons quick free kick to a sprinting Lee made the final difference. Lee sprinted past Abdian Defenders, Llyod Miller and Henry Ward, and curled the ball past Abdian Keeper Walter Dukes. The 12,000 Darmeni fans present at the match erupted in joyous applause as Lee and the rest of his team celebrated the equaliser.

Tim O'Donahaue was relatively pleased with his teams' performance, saying, "We struggled in the first half, but it's been awhile since we last played, and with a slightly different starting lineup, I felt the players were just a bit conservative, and that lead to some mistakes. Conservative is not what we do. We attack, attack, attack. When we start to sit on the ball, and we don't move it forward, we really suffer. I don't expect to have alot of possession of the ball, but we do need to possess it at least 45% of the time."

Image
Tor Tong Lee, before leaving for Astograth.
Darmen will next face the Conferated Nations of Continental Rushmore, who lost to Sargossa 2-3 in their opening match. Manager O'Donahaue talked about the next match Darmen will take part in. "I think we got our first match jitters out of the way, and we're ready to move forward and perform well. I don't want to give too much away, but I can definitely say that we'll be puching the attack quite a bit, and keeping the defensive presure high. We want to score goals, and force mistakes. That's how you win games, and that's what we plan on doing."

Captain Zach Preston commented on what he thought was one of the most important matches Darmen would play in during the tournament. "If we don't get three points tomorrow, we'll be in a really tough place, and might be eliminated from playoff contention after only the first two matches. Sargossa and Swartaz are the top two in the group, just like we thought they'd be. Now we've got to catch up to them, and those two matches against them will be important. But if we don't win this next match, we'll have no hope of catching up to them."

Preston also talked about the U-21 team, who will be playing their first match in the XXI Di Bradini Cup, against the Swartazian U-21's. "I hope all the best for the young 'uns. They've got a hard four matches in front of them for the Group Stage, but I can definitely see them advancing into at least the Round of 16." When asked who he was going to watch, and who he thought had the best chance of being called up to the National Team soon, Preston replied, "Sergio Ambrosio is a pretty good forward. He's got some spectacular finishing skills, and his ability to score from set peices is amazing. He's got a great chance to get called up when he turns 22, and I wouldn't be suprised if he stays up on the National Squad for good when the tryouts take place."

I intended to have this RP before the cutoff, but I'll use the flashback method instead. Do expect an RP about the match before the next matchday, though.

Year 3021
Albertson Training Facility
Pyria, Gyron, Falconfar
Two Days before the Match against Carmadin

"What did you just say?" demanded Ju-Iro Tanawasi to his assistant, Max Vanguard, "We won't be going down alone?"

"No, Ish-Nal. The U-21 Team will be going down with us under Ish-Nal Ky-Tro Wahari. The Queen just finalized the verdict today."

Ju-Iro extended his wings to their furthest height and sighed. Although Ky-Tro was a very distinguished Halil'Quan, her antics were not enjoyed by the tactician that he was.

"As long as I don't have to deal with her for too long," Ju-Iro commented, "Ta'ren willing."

The Falconfarian National Team had finished their preparations and were about to go to the Space Bridge to Rushmore, located about two miles from Albertson Training Facility. As they walked across the pitch, they were joined by the twenty-three of the U-21 team.

On the way to the Space Bridge, Ju-Iro looked back over the notes that the Minister of Sports, Ny'ar, was able to procure:

Carmadin: A nation of hard-to-pronounce names with moderated success in football.
Palacios and Rodallega: Complete mysteries with not much known.
Newland-America: A nation of humans relatively new to sporting.
Civil Citizenry: Well-established nation of athletes, well respected.
Polar Islandstates: Major powerhouse.

Although the details were scant, it provided enough of an impression. It basically showed that no team in Rushmore should be considered docile, that all would be a threat. He would treat them with the respect they deserved, and strive to earn theirs.

The team arrived at the Space Bridge. A transporter carried them to the other side almost instantaneously, and there they were, in the border to Civil Citizenry. Ju-Iro shook himself to get rid of the clammy feeling that came with transporting. The National Team bid adieu to the U-21 Team...

Year 3021
Ituraitz, Astograth
One Day before Match against Carmadin

Theodore Merrysing was one nervous man.

The next day, the Falconfar Imperials would be making their international debut against Carmadin. He seriously had no idea just what the competition level was on this planet. He could be far better than them, or he could be worse. This bothered him. He knew how he'd done in the Premier League - brilliant at times, not so great at others - but how that would translate... was a complete mystery to him.

His coach, Ju-Iro Tanawasi, kept telling him to relax, that the nervous energy he was feeling would just be counterproductive. Merrysing respectfully disagreed, but he did try to keep his wits. His teammates seemed to be not nervous at all - Loria Votmk, the Captain, and a Xe'Notl, acted all normal. Well, it wasn't peculiar for the sapient, sentient turtles from Isildar to be a bit reserved in their feelings, but even the expressive Halil'Quan bird-beastlings were fine. It was just the humans that had the nerve problems.

Jeremiah Mitchell, the star middle forward of the Ytriba Shock, had confided in Theodore that he was nervous as well.

One thing is for certain, Theodore admitted, We cannot fall apart against Carmadin, we must prove ourselves against our new opponents that we indeed do know how to play football...

With no information posted about the Carmadin squad, the Ish-Nal was having his players take no chances and had them practice pretty much everything. It had been grueling, but the atmosphere of the country was inviting. It was a region for athletes, and Theodore could feel it.

In 24 hours, it's go time. I'll be ready.

Mapletish Kicks Start Copa Rushmori VIII's Campaign...

Mapletish began it's very first Copa Rushmori with a 1-0 lost against Saugeais.Saugeais claimed the consultation goal by Kuzman Ruslan in the 87th minute
right from the penalty box.The beaten Oliver Kahner fell to his knees when he let in that goal, moaning over his mistake.Kahner commented in the post
match conference, saying,"The defeat was not well-deserved against such an opponent although the match was well-controlled by us,the penalty shouldn't
be conceded, and I apologise for making the terrible mistake.I felt that the fans have gone through a match which was not worth mentioning and I feel that
the defeat will make us grow up." The defeat was Muain Newton's first since the 1-0 over Darmen in the Minnow Cup Finals last year,he commented at the
post match press conference saying,"The defeat was predicted by bookmarkers and analyst right from the start of the campaign, and I was out there trying
to prove them wrong when this penalty arrived and I thought to myself, the game is over but I am trying to list out the positives, having a procession of 55%
is better than nothing as we are playing against a top quality opponent."

Image
Muain Newtons looks on as Mapletish plays.

Mapletish was holding onto the first half well,as Saugeais chased shadows as Mapletish hold onto the procession of the ball.In the first half,Alero Junio flunked
2 chances in front of the goal.A chip-shot by Junio in the 25th minute was well held onto by the Saugeais keeper while a second shot hit the bar in the 31st
minute.Di Natile missed a penalty in the first half as the yet again Saugeais keeper holding onto the weak penalty shot.Manager Muain Newtons made a few
changes at half time, bringing in the experienced Martin Keller over to replace the out of form JH Morrison who have 0 shots on goal in the first half,a disappointing
display for a player of his kind. The young Steven Jerrard went up to replace Peres De Oliver.Even with these two changes Mapletish continued their disappointing
display in front of the goal, with three shots by Junio all sent wide of the goal in the 60th,73th and 81st minute.Martin Keller was unable to make advantage of his
height as Steven Jerrard's crosses seemed to be too difficult for him to handle. The Saugeais' team made use of the fatigue-hit Mapletish defence to force a cross
in only to see John Davis clear it away but his hand just can't seem to keep to himself as it sticked out,and a penalty was issued to Saugeais in the 87th minute which
hit the Mapletish team hard on the backside,as Oliver Kahner dived to the right only to see the shot fly into the center of the net.The 10,000 Mapletish fans present
at the match stayed rooted to their seats to the very last minute only to see 2 more disappointing shots at goal by Di Natile and Junio respectively.

Muain Newtons stayed claim at the sidelines as he sees his team get demolished by a penalty. At the long press conference,Muain Newtons spoke about his team's
performance," The lads did a good job in which I think it was one of the better ones since the World Cup 58 Qualifying Rounds.Although we were weak in front
of goal, but it was sheer determination that brought us together but the steam went out after the 87th minute and we were forced to be one goal down.I was quite
pleased with the procession part with 55% of the procession,a total of 215 passes in the game is quite a feat which is achieved.I didn't expect a win from my lads
but a loss is seriously unacceptable when we have played so well."

Mapletish will face Erikkesh in the next match, who lost 3-2 to Ancharmunn in their opening match.Manager Muain Newtons commented on the next match, saying "
I think that the next match against Erikkesh will be the turning point for us to win, even if a win is not achieved,at the very least a draw will be enough,a defeat
in the first match has already waken us up and I am not expecting anything less than a draw from my lads. The mistakes that we made in front of the goal in this
match will not affect our forwards,we learn from our mistakes and making mistakes is definitely a learning point for all my players." Asked whether Mapletish
will have a chance to advance to the knockout rounds,he said " Mapletish will be in the knockout rounds if we perform well enough and avoid all the silly
mistakes that we make."

"Easy just put it over near Newland as that land has just been discovered and we need to get it up to the modern city's and towns of the rest of Homelands Our."
"So are you saying that we should stop development in the rest of the country to focus on land that was discovered 500 years ago."
"What we think is not the same as the public."
"Are you saying that we should have a referendum on this? It will turn into witch area of Homelands Our has the most people how can be bothered to get off their butt to vote."
"We should just have one."
"Remember that we don't need to go by the result!"

The Emplor on Sunday
It's sport report! FSSO overcome brave Baltskandio

BALTSKANDIO - 0

FSSO - 3
Needle 25 (Pen)
Sharp 42
McCroft 79

Ximun Orieta Stadium, 29,102 attendance

The tidy looking Ximun Orieta stadium played host to an encouraging FSSO performance as they saw off brave underdogs Baltskandio.

Baltskandio could not have expected to get much from this game but they attacked the FSSO from the start and almost scored immediately, as one of their wingers charged up the pitch with a surging run before cutting the ball inside for a striker, who fired the ball towards goal only for it to hit the post. FSSO goalkeeper Daniel Belgrave was beaten again five minutes later, taken by surprise as the same Baltskandio striker chipped him from the edge of the box, but Julesk Paranaya was quick to react and head off the line.

The FSSO continued to defend resolutely and Belgrave tipped a free kick over the bar on 10 minutes, but that was the last attempt on his goal that he had to deal with. In the 25th minute Lee Sharp gained possession at the half way line and sprinted upfield, but his run came to an abrupt end as he was tripped up just inside the box. The defender guilty for the challenge was lucky not to recieve a red card, as Sam Needle stepped up and buried the penalty into the bottom corner.

From there, the FSSO took control of the game and shortly before half time they got another goal. Sharp was the scorer this time, latching on to a Josh Stevenson through ball and tucking the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the six yard box. Sharp almost got another straight after half time, but he could only turn a Stevenson corner into the path of the opposition goalkeeper. However, a howler by the aforementioned goalkeeper would secure the result for the FSSO. 11 minutes before the end of the 90, he came out to collect a failed long ball from Carlos Aduna. However he somehow sliced his clearance straight to James McCroft, who otherwise would have been in an offside position. McCroft finished with ease from 20 yards, leaving the goalkeeper stranded.

Mangolana Gazzette

Mangolana loses Opener

In a shocking upset to many Mangolana national soccer team fans, Mangolana has lost for a second straight time to Homelands our. In a game where Mangolana was expected to dominate, they just plainly, dropped the ball, literally, but we will get to that later. Manager Mikael Svensson expressed his shock at the loss after the game. "I can't believe we lost that game the way we did. At the minimum we should have drawn this game, if not won it, but once again, are players did not play up to there true potential, nor did they try to play with any real energy. That combined with the fact that Homelands our played one hell of a game, and that is the reason that they defeated us. Trust me when I say this, there will be changes for the next game, maybe those new players will play out there to win, and not just to look pretty on TV."

The game started off looking good for Mangolana, they were able to keep great pressure on Homelands our, plastering Andrew Herkison with 7 shots on goal. Herkison though, was on his game, stopping all the shots with amazing saves that earned him Man of the Match honors at the end of the game.

The game would remain scorless for most of the game. The first and only goal would not come until the 88th minute. Homelands our, who had dominated the Midfield for all of the second half, had put tons of pressure, but had no quality chances. Thats when a shot from Mark moddr from 25 yards out, which was a low roller, but had some heat on it, bounced off the hands of THJ, and rolled into the net to give Homelands our a 1-0 lead. Mangolana was not able to attack for the rest of the game, giving Homelands our the opening match win, and putting Mangolana 5th in the group, ahead of only Erathore.

Manager Mikael Svensson vowed after the game to make changes to the Starters for the Mangolana national team, as so he did, below is the starters for the next game, and onward should the team do well enough to warrant keeping the line-up this way.

Not A Good Start

Well that went bloody poorly didn't that? A 4-2 loss against host Astograth is not the right way to go about starting a tournament in which you are the defending champions. The only redeeming factor of the game was getting to see the two new players play. And they did a good job. Celebrindal provided two assists and Alcarin netted once in their international debuts. Good start to what we hope will be a long and prosperous time with la furia azule. However their bright performances couldn't make up for the overall poor play of the team.

Our main problem was in the defense. Vanni del Naran was beaten several times over the course of the game, which resulted in two goals for the home team. Similarly, Manlio and Nero would push to far out to the right and left respectively, creating two large gaps which were exploited for the other two goals. DiSantos was also partly to blame. The youngster was too eager in advancing up in the midfield, often times playing on the same line as Celebrindal and leaving Julio Lanziano as the lone defensive midfielder. Not good stuff.

On the plus side, Beren Celebrindal was on fire. He was the real engine and focal point of the team. And it was clear why. He completed 95% of his 110 passes, routinely split open Astograth's defense with wonderful through balls, and used his brilliant technical skill to beat Astograth's players easily. Or at least he made it seem easy. He set up Huor Alcarin beautifully for the teams first goal when he hit an astonishing lobbed through ball into Alcarin's path from about forty yards back. Alcarin had no trouble in controlling the ball before slamming it home. Celebrindal set up Ricardo Villa for the team's second goal when he split Astograth's defense open with a neat little through ball. Villa burst into the box unoppossed and neatly chipped Larretape.

Better luck next time for the team. The only change to the team will be Victor Piqué replacing Vanni Del Naran in the backfield.

As you haven't posted even a roster yet, Carmadin, I took the liberty of just playing this one out myself... No offense intended.

From the Imperial Tribune, the most famous newspaper in Falconfar

Imperials win International Debut

ITURAITZ, Astograth - (FP)

It might be that the Imperials had not played on this planet before, and definitely not against the nations in the region of Rushmore. However, the Falconfar Imperials showed the Rushmori nations a thing or two about themselves today, winning their debut by an impressive score of 3-1 in the Dust Bowl in Ituraitz against Carmadin.

If one starts talking about player of the match, one cannot get very far without mentioning the superb play of the Captain, Loria Votmk. The Xe'Notl striker was a force of nature on the pitch, continuously splitting Carmadin defenders and shooting shot after shot at the keeper. Votmk finished her first appearance with two goals and one assist, a feat that exemplified the kind of player she was during the Falconfar Premier League's first season.

The match started slow for the Imperials as Carmadin came out with all cylinders firing. Theodore Merrysing was faced with no less than ten shots in the first twenty minutes. He blocked them all with the help of the play of his backfield, but in the twenty-second, a ball hit by a Carmadin forward glanced off of Merrysing's glove into the net, giving Carmadin a 1-0 lead.

However, the midfield combination of Qanso, Grokken, Vlashmir, and Maxwell - Halil'Quan, Xe'Notl, Man, and Woman - started to dominate the middle of the pitch, keeping most of the play at the Carmadin third of the field. This started creating chances for Votmk and Qateli up front, with Wusahari helping out. On the fortieth minute, Votmk was fouled hard outside the penalty box, awarding the Imperials a free kick from thirty yards out. Wu-Te Qanso, the Vice-Captain, took the shot, and Votmk was able to hit it with her head into the net, tying the game.

At halftime, Ish-Nal Ju-Iro Tanawasi told his players that the game had shifted in their favor.

"The Carmadin players seemed a bit dazed by the speed of our players," the Coach stated, "Even the Xe'Notl's speed seemed to phase them - maybe they are still used to the notion that turtles are slow. I told the players to keep up the intensity of play."

The Imperials must have heeded their coach, for they came out with a mission in the second half. Over seventy five percent of possession during the second half was in the Carmadin half of the pitch, and the Imperials took one shot after another after another.

In the sixty-second, Qanso hit a beautiful ball over the middle which split two Carmadin defenders. Votmk dribbled the ball, and on an amazing athletic feat, put the ball in the air and hit it with her shell, caroming it into the net. Since the shell is technically considered part of a Xe'Notl's back, it wasn't against the rules, and the Imperials were ahead 2-1.

The final advantage came in the eighty-fourth minute when Carmadin was making one of its final pushes up front. Vrailok Trokka stole the ball from the Carmadin forward and slotted it to Qanso, who hit it toward Votmk. Instead of taking the shot herself, however, Loria took advantage of the fact that all of the Carmadin defenders were converging on her and slotted the ball to the female human Qateli, who neatly buried it into the left corner for the final margin.

Ju-Iro Tanawasi also praised the play of Larissa Ukgard, Kiki-Ysai Nankiri, and Re-Wu Valahaso, who came in during the second half to help out.

Next up, the Imperials will head to the North Point Stadium in Olarria, Astograth, to face Palacios and Rodallega, who were destroyed by Newland-America, 3-0.

"Yes, they lost their first game," conceded Ju-Iro, "But that might make them even more motivated to defeat us. We have to always think of ourselves as newcomers, and consistently try to prove the doubters wrong."

RP notes
I have no specific permissions regarding the team beyond "no killing, please" ... though I'd prefer if you cleared a major injury beforehand, I can roll with it. Do as you wish, otherwise. If it helps, Aquillian is a largely conservative, somewhat-religious nation with a lingering resentment for Osarius.

Winning the war : The Aquillish "football revolution"

Opening their first Copa Rushmori campaign with a narrow defeat was always going to be hard for the Aquillish squad to swallow, especially given the quality of their play for the most part. When Gudeste cut inside from the right flank early in the first half to release Chavez in space, leading to Milito's volley striking the post, fans knew they were in for a treat. The 0-1 scoreline was perhaps one of the cruellest scorelines possible for Aquillian, as the Islanders repeatedly swept forward, seeking to overwhelm a defensive Western Cuba side, only to be repelled by their far more experienced personnel.

After the match, the Islanders' manager, Alfredo Herrera, was asked if he felt that Western Cuba has displayed a system that was more likely to yield success. His response was as dismissive as it was the reaction of a man insulted. "Of course not. We have been careless in possession and they countered superbly. This is all. I think for much of the game, we enjoyed better possession, more territory, and made them defend a lot." He continued to liken football to war; "In a war, if you lose one battle, but you are winning in many others, you do not change the overall strategy."

His attitude, although in many respects stubborn, is hard to argue with. Herrera's front four did manage to muster up fifteen clear chances on goal, and enjoyed large amounts of possession -- 57% according to FADA's official match report -- which suggests that they did play fairly well. However, the key stat when judging the success of an international team is the scoreline, a fact that Herrera must be (painfully) aware of. His right-hand man, Sergio Galindo, was a little more patient with reporters when approached after the game. "I think that while Fredo understands the importance of winning matches, he doesn't feel that we should stop playing Futbol Aquilliano to achieve this. And I think he is right, because if we do not play in Aquilliano style, how do we play? Are we really Aquilliano if we play like Erathi, for example? We would much rather fight and lose our way, than ignore our culture and win. That would be a different kind of defeat, that maybe goes to the soul."

Galindo's sentiments sum up those of the nation, it would seem, as the inhabitants of the Rushmori island are often seen as fiery, passionate types overseas. But just how accurate is this archetype? The players themselves seem to reject the notion of "passion" being of any particular value on the pitch. National team captain Pablo Sirici is known for being calm and collected for Hastmead Diamante, and told us after the match "there are times when [passion] is good, of course, but most of the time it is better to be able to think wisely and act quickly. If you do this, you can always be ahead. When you are submitting yourself to passion, you can maybe become predictable, and easier to stop." Comments like that make it easy to understand why Sirici was named captain, and why he receives so much more respect from Herrera than most Osarius-based Aquillish players. Herrera's system is geared toward the unpredictable, and in its labelling as "unorthodox", it would appear that he has achieved that aim. Most teams struggle to defend against it (at first at least) and it is arguable that it is only the relatively poor finishing of the forwards that robs the team of wins.

At the very heart of Futbol Aquilliano, though, is the nation's desire to be different. Their fierce refusal to compromise traditions and beliefs, their tight grip on their culture, and the country's borderline-xenophobic attitude to foreigners and other nations underlines this. Recent calls within Aquillian to gain complete autonomy, removing themselves entirely from what Ruben Osorio -- leader of the opposition in Aquillish government -- calls "the yoke of Osarian oppression" and enabling them to be a proud, self-determined nation, have gained a lot of weight in recent years. Some have speculated that this increased support for the right-leaning nationalist parties -- and the resulting talks of party mergers -- is an indirect result of the slowly rising popularity overseas of Futbol Aquilliano. Professor Le'to Matiki'lo, Head of the Aquillish Studies department at Kyoshiku University, speculates "the realisation that there was something innately Aquillish, entirely theirs and 'uncorrupted' by the rest of the world, that people beyond the island's coastline found interesting, or thrilling, or that they liked in any way, appears to have struck a chord. Following the moderate successes of the Islanders' national team in the World Cuppet a few years back, internet trends in Aquillian showed a spike in mentions of pride or patriotism directly relating to the nation. Since then, its grown steadily, and now we're reaching a critical point."

Professor Matiki'lo went on to suggest that a good showing in the Copa Rushmori -- regardless of actual results -- would add fuel to this raging fire of patriotism in Aquillian. If he is correct, and things have reached a critical point, football fans might be a major target for the election campaigns coming up soon. Interestingly enough, those campaigns will fall during the latter stages of the Copa Rushmori, when all eyes will be on the national team, should they progress beyond the group stage. Herrera may not believe that the scoreline is an accurate indicator of a football match's true winner, but there will be a lot of Aquillish fans who will over the coming weeks, and its not entirely crazy to think that the success of the Islanders could directly impact on the history of their nation. However, its not possible to tell whether the people of Aquillian will acknowledge that even if the national team loses their battle, the Aquillish people as a whole could still win their "war".
President: Horace Daley | Population: ~24 million | Capital: Genesia, Centrale

A moderately conservative, somewhat-religious nation with a lingering resentment for Osarius, their former colonial oppressors.
If you want a RL reference point, this nation is supposed to be a cultural, social and political mélange of Mexico and Jamaica.

I will sometimes RP in an approximation of Jamaican Patois. Apologies in advance ;)

(Caps in brackets indicate appearances from the bench)

Coach: Sol Kirkkegaard, 55
Sol Kirkkegaard is the finest tactical mind our nation has ever produced, and has guided his teams to success almost without fail with a calm and cool exterior that does nothing to hint at what his calculative mind is really thinking. He rarely flaps under pressure, and is well respected by fans, players, and press alike. He was the natural choice to lead our nation into the development of their first official international team, and carefully assessed the players through the exhibition A vs B and Road To The World Cup matches, the link to which can be found in my signature. Through this he developed a key core of players to rely on, and whilst almost all of them are retiring now, he is nurturing a second wave of talented youngsters to lead the Terns further on with the help of U21s coach Gregorz van der Riise. Following a disappointing last cycle at the World Cup, many of these youngsters are getting their first full run in the side, and it is a much changed side to the one that flopped in the group stage last time they were seen. There are a few shocks in this squad, and Sol wants a reaction from his players. Not least from the contraversial choice of captain...

Assistant: Joachim Schwartz, 45
Brought in by Sol to replace Morten Yarbin on a one-time temporary contract, former indoor soccer coach Joachim Schwartz has now been appointed the position on a permanent basis. Despite being used to coaching on a smaller pitch, he very much advocates the use of wingers, and as such has found himself at odds with Sol's preferred tactics on a number of occasions. It is Sol's belief that this difference in professional opinion will provide a healthy and progressive atmosphere with which to coach, and shouldn't be discouraged at all, and in fact the starting lineup this time around will actually feature wingers. He's hard nosed, and tough to win over, but incredibly forceful and a powerful personality on the sidelines. During the last World Cup, he suffered from what can only be described as a mental firestorm without a medical explanation, and has recently been fighting the feelings in his head that he may have developed a form of psychic ability to tell the near future.

#1 - GK - Lars Hegg Gammel - Age 30 - Avidia United (Krytenia) - 82 Caps, 1 Assist
Lars moved abroad to Cotdelapoms in order to try and win a place in the Terns squad, fearing he'd never get the chance if he stayed stuck behind Atle Andreasson at SK. The move paid off, replacing first Atle on the bench, and then Karlsson in the starting line up. Now the default first choice, his talent is considerable, and his quick reactions have been key to many Terns performances, including their best ever finish of third at the World Cup. Following the collapse of the Cotdelapomais league, it was his performance against Krytenia in that third place play off that alerted his presence to Krytenian giants Avidia United, for whom he now earns his living.

#2 - DR - Zacharias Juul - Age 23 - Jan Mayen Islanders - 23(2) Caps, 2 Assists, 2 Goals
Called up but never used in previous senior squads, Juul is fast, a natural leader, calm and confident on the ball, and has been making waves in the squad since his move to Jan Mayen Islanders, with whom he has excelled. Was coveted by a great many teams at one point, but has settled in well at Jan Mayen, and the future looks bright for the Terns right-back position.

#3 - DC - Sander Ljungberg - Age 27 - SK Franz Josef City - 46(11) Caps, 4 Assists, 2 Goals
With his movement, dependability, and extravagant tackling, Sander Ljungberg has proved himself to be a natural and worthy successor to Maarten Berg. Berg's retirement had left something of a hole in the heart of Sol's oft-favoured plans, but Ljungberg showed that all was not lost, and its almost as if he's been in the side all along. Has a turn of speed that can keep up with almost anything any fleet-footed strikers might try to pull on him, and with the ability to gel with seemingly whoever is placed next to him, the two are sure to be hard to get past. Sol is looking for a much improved performance from his centre-backs this tournament

#4 - DC - Torre Urfstadt - Age 23 - Club ESF (Valanora) - 9(11) Caps
Urfstadt is one of the most exciting prospects to come from the Torshavn ranks in a long time, and has been a crucial part of Torshavn's continued presence in Divisjon One, and a vital component in their CYgnus Cup winning squad. This has brought him to the attention of Vanorian scouts, and a big money move will see him playing in the VSL nex season. Fast, powerful, and one of the few shining lights in the Terns' World Cup campaign, once the finer points of positioning and leadership reveal themselves to him, he will be a truly formidable defender, the likes of which the Federation hasn't seen since Niko Marek. Expect his 6'8" frame to be a danger in the opposing penalty box as well.

#5 - DL - Edvar Folke - Age 22 - Merrilin FC (Civil Citizenry) - Uncapped
With the retirement of Steffan Pekarik in what was a fairly uninspiring World Cup run, Sol wasn't overly bowled over by the performances of his back up, Robin Arnfeldt. Therefore, with the left back position completely open, in from a string of performances in the U-21s comes the pair of Baalsen and Folke. A hugely dynamic presence in the defence, Folke will be moving to Merrilin to play his way in the King's League, and his huge promise is being given a huge chance to shine here.

#6 - MC - Luc Demarchelier - Age 30 - Cafundó do Juta (Cafundéu) - 75(33) Caps, 53 Assists, 12 Goals
Demarchelier was a key part of the Terns reaching the third place spot in WC57, and has continued to be so. Naturally more of a driving attacking midfielder than a dictatorial playmaker, he had to get used to playing a deeper role by the squad Kirkkegaard, and he has excelled, taking his skill to the Cafundulense giants of Cafundó do Juta. His powerful runs with the ball seemingly glued to his feet are a regular sight during the closing parts of many matches, as his stamina will terrify tiring defenders.

#7 - MR - Jon Kjaer - Age 25 - Mar Sara FC (Valanora) - 8(11) Caps, 7 Assists, 3 Goals
With six caps and three assists for the U-21s, Kjaer was a victim of Sol's tactical preference when it comes to his national side potential, and this marks his time with a starting position thanks to Schwartz's persuasion. Nonetheless, he seems to have always been around, and the fact he's only twenty-five catches many by surprise, as he had been a regular and feared feature of the SK starting lineup for many a year, though has recently been offered the chance to play in Valanora, a chanve he leapt at.

#8 - MC - Iulian Finnibaturinn - Age 23 - Therakham ZL (Kagdazka and Pazhujebu) - 15(2) Caps
Iulian has nine caps, two assists, and one goal for the U-21s, and although hirst first team performances have been limited so far, his performances have Jorgen Hauge and Pol Sundstrom looking over their shoulders nervously, and with both out injured for this squad, he has made he jump to the central position. He's a commanding presence, and likes to sit as part of a central midfield pair, supporting a more attack-minded partner and protecting the defence. He can also be used to swing free-kicks from long range for attackers to head attempts at goal, and though his shooting isn't that good he is labelled as a star of the future, and could make a real name for himself at this tournament.

#9 - ST - Timo Skye - Age 34 - Royal Rumiatzi (Astograth) - 155(4) Caps, 23 Assists, 107 Goals - CAPTAIN
The nation's leading goalscorer, there isn't much that can be said about the enigmatic Skye that hasn't already been said. A classic central striker, his unswerving accuracy and nimble off-ball movement has tormented defences around the world and led to him being one of the players most likely to turn heads amongst fans and journalists alike. His infamous temper, ego, and opinions can often get him into trouble, but he is the first name on the team sheet every time. With half an eye on the raft of talented youngsters lurking in the wings, he is setting out to build a legacy that will last forever, something he has surely achieved with his hundredth goal in the last cycle. Somewhat contraversially, and with perhaps half an eye on the train of thought that seems to support the idea that this will be Skye's last tournament with the team, Kirkkegaard has handed him the captain's armband. The jury is still out on whether this is inspired or suicide, but one thing is for sure - Skye has a silver medal, and a bronze medal with the Terns, now, he wants to go out in style with a chunk of gold round his neck.

#10 - TQ - Alexsandr van Sorensen - Age 24 - Petardos S/A (Cafundéu) - 44(46) Caps, 33 Assists, 43 Goals
Bright young prodigy Alexsandr is only 24, but is already a key and regular figure in the Tern dressing room. Played a vital role for Jan Mayen before his move to Cafundéu where he continues to impress and is learning every day, impressing the scouts from Petardos S/A enough to be offered a contract. Suffers from rare brain condition synaesthesia, but manages to not let this affect his attractive attacking play. Captained the U-21s in the Draggonnii Inviyatti, and likes to link in from the midfield, playing as either a deep lying striker or a forward thinking midfielder or trequartista, applying his explosive acceleration and going on mazy dribbles that often end in a shot from his sweet right boot. Could change a game in an instant, and could become an all-time legend.

#11 - ML - Ole Berghaus - Age 24 - Gimnasia (Kagdazka and Pazhujebu) - Uncapped
Ole Berhaus has had a wonderful few seasons for Gimnasia, and with Jorgensen getting a lot of flak from unhappy supporters at the last World Cup, he has won he chance to represent his country here. He is nimble and quick for a big man, and his imposing presence on the wing can be the first line of defence. Going forwards, he is explosive and powerful, and will be drifting into the box before you know it.

#12 - GK - Jan Rasmus - Age 25 - FC Axel Heiburg - 4(2) Caps
Rasmus has six caps for the U21s, and was first choice at the Draggonnii Inviyatti. He is tall and agile, and might as well have springs in his heels for the height he can achieve with a jump, and a surprisingly long reach that confounds many a strikers' efforts. He can be a star of the future if shown the ropes, and this taste of the big tournaments is essential.

#13 - GK - Ole Gorrechategi - Age 31 - FC Torshavn - 0(1) Caps
With Draio Szezlak performing heroics for the Chicks at the Di Bradini Cup, and the Henjann-Bezelhov and Espeseth not the first choice at their clubs, Kirkkegaard as turned to the single capped Gorrechategi for his third keeper spot this tournament. Having impressed many as his side finished fifth and took the Cygnus Cup, Gorrechategi is a nimble and lithe keeper, and his Astograthi heritage will make this call up a particularly memorable one for him should he get any playng time.

#14 - MC - Jorgen-Franz Bru - Age 23 - East Franz Athletic - Uncapped
Captaining the Chicks to their outstanding Di Bradini Cup win last time around, Bru's star has been rising almost unstoppably ever since, shining in an FC Torshavn side that finished third and won the Cygnus Cup. Along with the other star of that side, Torre Urfstadt, Bru has accepted offer of play at a higher level, and will be playing for East Franz Athletic next season. For now, however, we get the chance to see him in action for the Terns, and to give his considerably midfield talent the chance to shine.

#15 - MC - Casper Baek - Age 27 - FC1. Surtsey Island Gulls - 1(1) Caps
With the international retirement of Bielsen, and the injuries to Hauge and Sundstrom, it wouldn't surprise many to note that Sol considered his midfield a little short on muscle. As such, Surtsey captain Casper Baek has been brought in to have the chance to add to his two caps so far. Reliable, hardcore, and never stops running, Baek is box-to-box personified, and always seems to know the safest pass should one be needed.

#16 - MC - Niko Lepka - Age 21 - Royal Vosaroni Antenelli (Erathore) - Uncapped
Only 21 years old, many had expected Lepka to be captaining the Chicks in the upcoming Di Bradini Cup. However, Sol has seen the talent this young midfielder has to bring the table, and has brought him in accordingly. Playing for Atletik Thessia before moving to RVA, he is well experienced, and likes to give as good as he gets, physicall speaking. His real skill lies with distribution, however, and he is seen as the next worthy successor to Demarchelier.

#17 - ST - Amadeus Irndtor - Age 28 - SK Franz Josef City - 28(28) Caps, 7 Assists, 24 Goals
With a lethal left boot and a sixpence turning circle, this speedy player is getting his big chance in the squad, with an ageing first choice front line more open to the idea of substitution. His recent performances from the bench at the world cup will have him brimming with confidence, as will his performance for SK as they won the title a few seasons ago, outshining Dei Ormache as an attacking force and revelling in front of attacking midfielders like Alexio Del Nieran and Robin Hjik as he romped to the top goalscorer accolade. If he is to come on, expect Sol to build the support around him with an attacking midfield to work from.

#18 - ST - Ellis Elmsvikur - Age 22 - Iturributa United (Astograth) - 1(2) Caps, 1 Assist
Much is hoped for from Elmsvikur, and amongst a fiercely talented quartet of young strikers in Elmsvikur, Kvitchenko, Bergen, and Kaplowitz, it was the Erathi-based pair that were unlucky lose out on a place, based as far as anyone can tell on Sol flipping a coin to decide which two of the four were going to get experience here. Imposing and athletic, Elmvikur is the complete package. Fast, nimble, athletic, a dead ball ace, good in the air, and with a lethal shot. Like I said, much is hoped for from Elmsvikur.

#19 - DR - Thor Lossler - Age 25 - SK Franz Josef City - 7(6) Caps
Lossler has made appearances for the U-21s, and was in the Copa Rushmori squad at Gregorz van der Riise's suggestion last time around - impressing Kirkkegaard and Schwartz enough to take the spot full time. He's fast, and wicked with a cross, but his attacking ambitions can sometimes leave his teammates exposed. When he's focused on the defensive task at hand however, not much gets past him. An exciting prospect, he has propelled himself into the starting lineup for the league champions, and can make an international impact here.

#20 - ST - Diedrich Kvitchenko - Age 22 - Esat Franz Athletic - 1(2) Caps, 1 Goal
With one goal in his few appearances so far, Kvitchenko is looking like developing into a lethal striker, and like Irndtor is capable of playing out wideleft and cutting in if required to do so. He is fast, and likes to use this to surprise defenders, changing direction and making a darting run that finishes in a first-time shot before many are even aware he changed direction. His ability to find space like this has been likened to witchcraft by a few defenders, and though he might not touch the ball much during the match, when he does, he uses it efficiently.

#21 - DL - Luka Baalsen - Age 23 - East Franz Athletic - Uncapped
One of the stars of van der Riise's Chicks side for many years, this East Franz left back is finally getting his call up to the main Terns side. One of many youngster who has waited patiently for the legendary Pekarik and de Huyer to retire, he will seize this chance with both hands if given the chance to by Edvar Folke. Fast and intelligent, Baalsen can drill the balls in from long distance like a missile, so keepers will need to beware of his ability.

#22 - DC - Luka van Brekke - Age 27 - FC Cape St Paul - Uncapped
Quietly putting in solid performances week after week and keeping out of the limelight will get you far... eventuall. And after roughly a decade of first team performances for St Paul, van Brekke is finally getting a chance with the Terns. Dependable and reliable, if unspectacular, van Brekke is a fine defender and well capable of hoding his own against eh best of the Federation. Can he do it against the best of the region?

#23 - DC - Cadim Radimov - Age 27 - Bugny FC (Saugeais) - Uncapped
Doing the same job for Bugny FC that van Brekke does for St Paul, Cadim Radimov is going to get his chance to revel in the spotlight for a change. Feared he was abit forgotten out in Saugeais, but will be looking to use this time in the squad to remind people of just what exactly he can do. Which is a lot, in case you were wondering.

TACTICS:
The Polarian game is fast, quick, and physical. They won't give you a second on the ball to think, and they won't hold back in the tackle. It is an attack minded game, though when the full backs bomb forward, expect to see Finnibaturinn and Demarchelier hang back to mop up any counter attacks. In the centre of the park they will play a possession based midfield game, though a defence splitting pass could come at any moment towards the fast and direct front line.

Spotlight On… The CNCR And lo, did it occur that the White Stars (technically those things aren’t actually stars but ancient aboriginal designs of great spiritual wotnot, but… feh) did enter the Copa Rushmori for a second time, having shocked and appalled all seven-or-so continents of the region by somehow contriving to penalty-kick their way to the final. Call them the CNCR, call them Northwestbrantinentalrushmoria, call them the Confederated Nations – Rushmore’s own big, brown lump is finally here on the regional sporting scene thanks to that run.

We really can’t stress enough just what an achievement that was for one (alright, twelve) of the region’s true sporting, or at least sarkerring, backwaters – and that’s reflected in the fact that Coach Shelford has retained most of the squad that travelled to Saugeais. Which certainly makes our lives a hell of a lot easier. We can just Ctrl+V most of the Scouting Report bit from two, ahem, years ago.

Phew.

Scouting Report… As international debutants a team making their second appearance on the continental stage, guessing the CNCR’s initial set-up will prove problematic slightly easier for pundits and the opposition alike, but the squad numbers handed out last week retained from last time and the reputations preceding certain key squad members (not to mention the mana… sorry, head coach) point to a rather grim 4-3-3, with the midfield bypassed where possible and goalscoring hopes pinned solely upon the pace [and] occasional moments of trickery and, most importantly, youthful naivety of the trio up front.

Himmelmann looks the most physical of the three and will likely plough the central furrow, pouncing on loose balls and hopefully providing flick-ons for pallid, speedy Kipling – whose five goals in five games at the recent Campeonato Rushmori Juvenil Sub-17 suggested that his [previous] record of thirty-seven in twenty-one Lussolavizzovian league starts might not quite be as silly as we’d first thought – and diving champion t’Butler, whose no less impressive record in the rather stronger Bkyka league shouldn’t be masked by the fact that he’s been playing for the club that’s won the title thirteen years out of the past fifteen.

The hope, essentially, is that none of that lot have realised that, in the greater scheme of things, they’re basically shite yet.

With a bit of luck, the all-Chesapeakine central defensive partnership (including Shelford’s club protégé Kitts at the CBSL’s surprise champions and Seunem international Austin Vane and Woodknock’s partner in the capital) will receive much-needed protection from squad captain t’son o’Henry, the only member of the playing staff to have had experience overseas; the graceful Allemali-born midfielder having spent many a year warming the bench at CMSC1 sides (and even winning a title with Green Island) before answering the call from his parents’ native Ssotapel in the aftermath of Candelariasian football’s disintegration. His likely fellows North and Matthews meanwhile are relatively confident on the ball, by all accounts, and can spot a pass – but given the standard of opposition they face week-in, week-out domestically the Copa will surely represent a step up too far.

[But even more so, this time.]

Verdict… No element of surprise? No chance. Third, at best, in a competitive Group C. Don’t expect to be hearing Rushmoria! (Ode to a Comely Kitchen Girl) too often, this time around.

Kits… The CNCR’s talismanic kits from last time are also back, this time with all the nice little air holes down the side, as per illustrated.

NEW LOOK SIDE WIN ON DEBUT

Kernansquillec's new look mixed sex team put toghether a strong performance to defeat a spirited Jen O the Hill side on their Copa Rushmori debut. Chapell Robert named an experimental side with most of the team having spent less than a week toghether in training. However the game got off to a good start for the Green and Whites as Sharp hit the post with her 5th minute effort after some good work in midfield from Roseby and Pearce. The 18th of March Stadium was pretty much full with a great turnout of Astograth fans. Around 7,000 Kernansquillecans fans were one their feet as they thought they had just seen their team take the lead on the 18th minute, but Lilac's shot could only find the side netting. Eventually the Green Stable found a gap as Holmes' layoff allowed Nicole Sharp to slip past the last defender and slot home a well worked goal on the half hour mark.

The Jenhillers had little chances worth mentioning during the 90 minutes. Kernansquillec should realy have scored a couple more with the woodwork being hit a furthur 3 times. But a 1-0 win on a tournament debut is a good result for a very different looking side to the World Cup. Next up are Erathore who are the Group favorites (and defending champions) but that didn't stop them losing to hosts Astograth by 4 goals to 2.

Overall the introduction of female players has been well taken by most fans even if some low key protests were held by around 1,000 people in Kernansquillec City and Belle-Isle-En-Terre. Nicole Sharp, the scorer of Kernansquillec's winner taked to us after the game: "It was realy great to score the winner. It's been fantastic to join up with the guys. We've been training toghether since the 1st WSWC and we've been dying to get the chance to play a proper game toghether. I would like to thank everyone at KERFA for their great job. But this might be great now, but I, and the whole team aren't here just to have a little kick-about. We are here to make a mark on this competition, maybe even win it."

Win: 1-0 vs. The Jenhillers

Continued from here

"All of them?" Alejandro Reyes, a captain of detectives in Soluca's police force, starred incredulously at the man in front of him. He wasn't sure what annoyed him most, the man's obtuseness in the face of a murder investigation or that ridiculous goatee. "You're telling me." He tried again. "That not one camera in this entire club managed to record anything last night?"

"Like I said." The Barracuda's duty manager shifted uneasily under Reyes' stern gaze. The club came alive at night, the morning shift didn't normally involve this level of inquisition. "There was some kind of power surge which messed up the system. I'm waiting for the engineer now."

"A power surge?" Reyes sighed. The duty manager couldn't even look him in the eye. He was lying, of that Reyes was certain. But he couldn't prove a thing until he got some of the techies down here. He moved forward until he was an inch from the nervous employee's face. "You can cancel your engineer, we'll check it out for you. Extremely carefully."

Reyes returned to the main bar area where sergeant Moreno had been passing a photo of the dead girl among the staff on the off chance that someone remembered her. He spied the sergeant sipping at a coffee while chatting to a pretty barmaid.

"Any luck chief?"

"Sergeant, that man would make quite possibly the worst poker player you could imagine. We'll give him an hour to stew then come back with a technical team and nail the lying bastard."

Elena, the pretty barmaid, giggled in a suitably pretty way. "You can't blame Hugo for being a bit jittery. I don't know what your two friends said to him earlier but he's been white as a sheet ever since."

Reyes' eyes narrowed. "What friends?"

"You know, the two heavies you sent down first thing. A couple of suited thugs. They took Hugo into the security office, they were in there ages."

"The security office being where the cameras are controlled?"

"Yep. Then they interviewed all the staff that were on duty last night. I say interviewed, it felt more like an interrogation."

"Go on." Reyes was starting to get an eerie feeling in the pit of his stomach.

"They kept showing me two pictures. One was of the same girl the nice sergeant asked me about just now. The other was of a man i'd not seen before. They said that they knew this man was her killer and needed me to say i'd seen them together last night. But I hadn't. I'd never seen him before."

"Could you describe the men who questioned you? And the one in the photo?"

Elena crinkled her nose as she mulled over the question. "I think so, but there was something else. Right at the end of the night I was clearing one of the window booths and I saw something. I told them and they got angry and told me not to repeat it to anyone else."

Reyes managed a small smile. "You can probably guess my next question."

Elena matched his smile. "Yes I can. I guess you're all on the same team aren't you? And I really didn't like their tone. I may just be a girl from a little village on the Costa Azul but I don't much like being intimidated." She paused, perhaps momentarily missing that quiet life in the colonies, before inadvertently throwing herself face first into a veritable minefield. "I saw the girl, the girl from the photo, at the end of the night. She was getting into a car. I remember it because i'd never seen anything like it before. It looked like it was made of solid gold.

Sergeant Moreno had been quietly watching Copa Rushmori highlights on a large screen TV in the corner, raising his cup in salute as Javi Aguilar headed in what would turn out to be the winner against the CNCR. A second later that cup fell from a nerveless hand, hitting the ground with a wet smash. He turned on Elena, a wild look on his face. "What did you say?"

"Err . . . she got into a gold car."

"Hellfire! Captain?!"

Reyes paled slightly. "The cameras. They're covering the tracks. Quick, we need to get to the lab."

"But we . . ."

"Now!"

Imagebeing made Captain...

Well, I can't say it wasn't a surprise, because it was. Almost as much as finding out a newspaper that hasn't always been your most loyal supporter wants you to write a column for you during the tournament, in fact.

Of course, I can't say either of them weren't deserved, either...

Yes, folks, what you hear is true. This is going to be my last tournament for the Terns. Sol gave me a choice. He said I could go out with a bang this tournament and he'd make me captain, or I could wait til the next world cup but he couldn't guarantee me game time.

Well, it was the obvious choice, wasn't it? You know me by now, live fast, die young. Or hopefully a little bit middle aged, at least.

I want to go out with a bang, guys! I want to lift that trophy! Especially now I'm living and working in Astograth, as well, that would be pretty sweet... Which is why it was so frustrating to be held to a draw by Civil Citizenry! Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not Citizist, some of my best friends are Citiz - but those guys can't half be the most frustrating demographic in Rushmore sometimes. I've played all over the world, for some of the best teams in the world (and Metropolis Alligators), and I can tell you that there always seems to be the one awkward Citiz hanging around, saying the jokes that nobody laughs at.

So was I surprised to see that we couldn't beat them? Well, a tiny bit. Despite making a habit of not being surprised these days it would seem that this one did slip under my radar a little. Of course, I do expect to win every game... but that's besides the point.

Because a small part of me knew this would happen. I'd get the captain's armband, and I'd lead by example, and I'd play my heart out, and nobody would pass to me. I don't even have to cause a stir when I say I'm the best striker on the pitch this time, either. I have to be, I'm the only one on the pitch! Alexsandr doesn't count, he's more of a midfielder these days. Still wouldn't pass to me when I was open, though.

These young players, eh? No respect, some of them. That kid with the two names, Franz-Josef Bru or whatever his name is, just barged past me in the foyer the other day like he owned the place! Ran straight past me as I held the door open for him, shoulder-knocked me, and disappeared straight into the men's room with a sort of dance-y jig. The nerve.

It's like some of them don't even know who I am! They don't respect me when I walk around the place, they don't seem that bowled over by me playing... I mean, this is painful for me to admit but I'm probably not quite as good as I was when I started playing for the Terns, and scored my first ever hat tricks in our first ever competitive match... But I'm still fast enough to get along, and I can still hit the ball with as much venom as ever. And besides, I don't see THEM scoring any goals. Its like they just don't care about who it is up there wearing the armband for them. So there. Sulk justified.

And anyway, this is me now. Like it or not I'm their captain now, the power is all mine, and they ought to just embrace that.

If I say jump, they should ask how high.

If I say run, they should ask how long for.

If I say to pass to, then they should do that. And let me score all the goals. I mean, I'm the lone striker, I'm the captain, and I'M TIMO SKYE! What other reasons to pass to me could they possibly want and/or need?!

Anyway, the next match up is against Newland-America, so I'm told. I've never heard of them. Don't know if the same can be said for them about me, but let's see if we can't do something about that, just in case...

Bryan Fualkner rushes past the defense to score the opening goal.
Bryan Fualkner scored early in the match, setting Darmen up for it's first victory in this Copa Rushmori campaign. Zach Preston would score the final goal of the match in the 57th minute, sealing the victory for Darmen. Tim O'Donahaue was happy with his teams performance, saying, "We played well, and I was happy with the performance. The Midfield was amazing, and Faulkner's goal in the 17th minute was absolutley amazing. If we can defeat Sargossa by playing at the same level we played at today, I don't think there will be much standing in the way between us and a Round of 16 berth."

Faulkner's 17th minute goal will be one to remember. Luca Cormio gathered up the loose ball after Korey North lost control of the ball at mid field. Cormio quickly passed to Faulkner, who sprinted down the sideline towards the corner. Faulkner hesitated, not sure wether to cross the ball into the area or to pull back and wait for more attackers to join him. Faulkner however chose the third choice which is to go around the defense and shoot. Faulkner spun around Chott Kitts, amazingly retaining possesion of the ball, and struck a powerful shot that entered the top corner of the goal. Opposing Goalkeeper, Lizan Richellet, had absolutely no chance to make the save, and we must admit, that when he flailed his arms in the attempt, it was pretty funny.

Korey North made up for his mistake by scoring the equaliser in the 34th minute. With the score tied at 1-1 and the teams entering the dressing rooms, Manager Tim O'Donahaue decided to make two changes to the team. First, he replaced defender Mikael Adan with the younger, more athletic Scott Rydzik. Rydzik played well in the second half, and played a critical role in Darmen's superb defensive play in the second half. Secondly, O'Donahaue substituted in a young Gene Turko for Danny Beasley, who seemed to suffer an injury during the first half.

O"Donahaue comented on the injury, saying, "It's not a big deal. We'll have (Jack) Chaves starting in Beasleys' place, at least just for the match against Sargossa. Beasley will be back for the match against Swartaz."

It was the substitution of Beasley for Turko that made the difference in the match however, as Turko set up Preston for the second goal. Turko had this to say about his assist, "It was an amazing feeling when Preston headed my cross into the goal. For my first National Team cap, I can say that this feels amazing. I hope that I can continue to perform at this level throughout the rest of my International Level career."
