Chronowire Communications, the premier information firm in The Babbage Islands, seek to become title sponsors of the Series B Champions' Cup.

Image

Chronowire provide televideo, wireless, network and print information resources to more Babbagians in more places than any other company. As the national football team and our top clubs make our way onto the world stage, we have broadcast their exploits. As the largest and most respected broadcaster in an emerging football nation, we believe that sponsorship of the premier series for emerging clubs worldwide would be both logical and a distinct honour.

Thank you for your consideration.

Welcome to the twenty-first edition of the IUCC, the premier tournament for university football teams around the multiverse.

A total of twenty-one twenty-four institutions from seven eight nations were entered into this year's tournament. However, we have recently received word that the University of Riestre (Vephrall) has decided to withdraw from the tournament due to previously-unforeseen financial issues, thus narrowing the field to an even twenty. Also of note, this is the first edition that does not feature all three of the tournament's founding nations, as Ad'ihan did not submit any entrants for this edition.

Since we have exactly twenty twenty-four teams, there will not be a qualifying round this time; instead, all twenty twenty-four entrants will go directly into the group stage.

The draw for the group stage is as follows (higher-seeded teams at the top):

Group A
Jishmid College [VPH]
St. Mark's College, Mort Park [WZI]
St. Martin Medical Institude [WZI]
Sieu Creative Thought Centre [UN#]
Neak University [UN#]
Université francophone de Beningrad [SNO]

Group B
Yuki State–Helmsley [DAN]
Hinamizawa College [DAN]
Great Northern University [ASA]
Strawberry Fields University [TAE]
229 Monks of the Assembled College [UN#]
Universidad de Santa Catalina [TBI]

Group C
Till College [VPH]
University of Riestre [VPH]
Paruvia Institute of Technology [ASA]
Uranus Hills [TAE]
Berkley University [TBI]
David O. McKay College [TBI]

Group D
Thane College [DAN]
St. Martin University [WZI]
Cecile Area University [TAE]
Van Prooijen University [ASA]
Beningrad University of the Bleeding Obvious [SNO]
Saint Patrick's University, Little Clotaire [SNO]

The top two finishers in each group will proceed to the quarterfinals. The group stage will take place on Wednesday and the knockout stages Thursday.

FFB Premier League Season 22

Dover City win their sixth Premier League title, but first in over a decade, as Tegan Nash and Magnus Svoboda combine to stop Parisian's bid for a fourth consecutive title 1-0 away in the final match of the season. South Side AC and two-time champs FC Green Star are relegated.

FFB Championship Series Season 22

In the last season of the current format, Bloomfield National and Capital AC both return to the Premier League after several years away. Six teams relegate, and only two will be promoted in, as the series shrinks from 16 to 12 as part of a realignment to five divisions from four. OGC Nancy and The Orange are the unlucky ones, good enough to stay up in any prior year but not this time.

CMS Cup Semi-Finals… The semis did indeed brunged us yet another Albrecht derby – a messy affair on neutral ground over in Arrigo, with barely a few hundred tickets handed out for fans of either side and locals instead taking up the shortfall.

Albrecht FC duly had 90% of the crowd against them, but produced a much better showing after going ahead inside three minutes through Adam Kouakou Kouamé and ultimately dominating Turkish, their young midfield getting much the better of their arch-rivals’ more experienced foursome. Ultimately though, it went to pens – with Malan saving brilliantly from Gary, or possibly Greg, Innisvale and Xavier Tekeste slotting home to put the Scorpions into their third final in four seasons.

Fittingly, they shall taken on their slightly-less-arch, but still pretty-damn-arching, rivals Arrigo Portuguese – after Panadero’s heuva overcame Caires City to book a place in their first ever CMS Cup final. With both clubs looking to rescue their Clausuras with some silverware at the Solidarity a month from now, we really could be in for a bit of a cracker.

Caires City 2-4 Arrigo Portuguese (Lewis 9, Lloyd 56; Oughton 30 and 39, Macanás 65, Randjelovic 90+3)
@ Solidarity Stadium, Albrecht

Albrecht Turkish 1-1 Albrecht FC (1-1 AET) (Alexander 21; Kouakou Kouamé 2) (Albrecht FC wins 3-2 on penalty kicks)
@ Estadio Nacional, Arrigo

Matchday Thirty-Two… Ta, Brian. It’s been a blast.

One sacking from out Nethertopia way, then, although not necessarily the one we’d really expected. Safe as houses but going nowhere, the Tenderville chairman opted to wash his hands (gettit?) of old Brian Carson, tucking him into his longship and allowing him to drift off gracefully into the sunset. Or back to his retirement home in Newmanistan. Or to that bit of Jeruselem that pretends it’s a country even though it doesn’t appear to possess any of the remotest trappings of statehood, am I the only one who still finds that grating?

Anyway, he’s got nowt left to prove as a manager, but making that all-important step-up both domestically and internationally has simply been a step too far. He’ll be fondly remembered out on Ratos – a CMS Cup title and the third-place league finish of XXXIV might be par for the course, given the money the Dragons have splashed out since joining Candelariasian football, but the aged Newmanistanian’s overall record is still a highly enviable one – but it’s time to look to the future.

That future, by all accounts, comes in the form of Andrés García – not, perhaps, the most thrilling of appointments given his record as pre-Carson caretaker, and in Candelariasian parts at least he’s never going to escape the term ‘ping-pong’ – but for now assistant manager Marnix Huisman will take the final three games. Including this one just gone, a one-all draw with Portuguese – Tenderville’s fourteenth of the league season.

On an unrelated note, Marnix is an awesome name.

Many had expected Wildeman to get the chopping nod an’ all, but IJmuiden (s’all one letter in Dutch, y’know) appears to have made the right call in holding off. With everyone back fit and not on international duty or owt (don’t ask us about how all this fits in with the timing of the Copa Rushmori, never mind that… other thing), NAPPC gave a much improved performance in Rosasharn and came away with all three points – assisted, it must be said, by a nervy display from Cobus van Linschoten between the sticks, who palmed out a weak Van Dyke effort straight into González Rodríguez’s welcoming path late in the first half. Widely expected to replace Ryan Gonzaléz (Aaaagh! Too many Vans! Too many Gonzálezes!) full-time for the Spur next term, this display will have given Revault food for considerable thought over the young Nethertopian Candelariasian’s progress.

On an unrelated note, why would anyone migrate from Nethertopia to the Candelarias to rear their offspring anyway?

Meanwhile at the fatty-fatty bum-bum, Erik Visser – extremely quiet since formally leaving Ricky behind, which we really don’t think can be a coincidence – popped up deep into stoppage time at Harper Street to earn the Marbles a potentially massively important point. Catedral found their sixth win of the season (a wee bit late there, guys) at home to McDonald, MN Smith are back up to thirteenth with victory over seemingly doomed Allemali, and Gamboa remain stranded two points behind Marbles following a less-than shocking drubbing in Hoxton.

Albrecht FC, by the by, went down one-nil to Caires Sports, and are suddenly looking nervously behind at both Caires clubs in the race to snatch a consolation Globe Cup place.

AFC MN Smith 1-0 Candelaria-Allemali (Rogers 58)
Albrecht Turkish 4-0 Gamboa FC (Innisvale 21, Lori 45+1, Calabrese 71, Werner 84)
Caires Sports 1-0 Albrecht FC (Sinjinir 65)
Cathedral City 1-0 McDonald SC (García 2)
KT Hotspur 0-1 NAPPC (González Rodríguez 40)
Marquez-Onwere 1-1 Caires City (Rosenthal og 7; Villasenior og 14)
Mayo Valley 0-3 Green Island (Anwamanë 44, va Drake 50, Durosa 74)
Port of Clotaire 2-2 El din Marbles (Ham 32, Edwards 46; Erik Visser 26 and 90+3)
Tenderville United 1-1 Arrigo Portuguese (Night 49; Macanás 76)

Matchday Thirty-Three… And then, as far as the race against the drop goes, there were two.

Well alright, three. But that pesky goal difference thingy has pretty much confirmed McDonald SC’s place in the top-flight next term despite this weekend’s less than inspiring one-nil home defeat to Mayo Valley. Alvintzi now faces a considerable battle to hang onto Ryan Sheppard, a special striker who’ll surely be piquing the curiosity of some rather bigger clubs than the Saurin outfit, while the successful Jesseltonian trio also stand out as future targets for the wealthy. Still, the Dons supporters will rightly have faith in his ability to keep things on track with a new-look side, and chairman Chris McGovern will deservedly take considerable credit for sticking by his man all these years. A perfect illustration of why premature sackings are so often just that.

Of course, if they’d picked up one less victory this season we’d be singing from an entirely different song book. And we’ve said exactly the same about Ancil Liebeskind’s reign at Albrecht Independent FC in years past, and look how that ended up. But whatever.

With the Dons seemingly safe then, the focus fell on Gamboa – who’ve won two games during the Clausura ad plummeted from comfortable safety into the bottom three – and the Marbles, who’ve… also only won twice, actually. The only possible conclusion one can draw from the latter failure is that managers from anywhere east of Marquez are utterly cack. A thought to keep one warm at night, in these dark days for Candelariasian coaching at the highest level. We shall slip a hypothetical nightdress onto its metaphorical body and pretend that it is a real woman as a cold, lonely Winterval draws near.

Anyway, they both lost three-nil.

The match-ups were unfortunate, for Caires Sports – who blew away a really very poor Gamboa side at the Dome – are still desperately trying to grab a Globe Cup place, and Albrecht FC retain an outside shot at making the top four. It still took a fine showing from Jesse Nakatsuru to separate the two sides at the Marble Ground, with the C&M international saving his best performance of the season for its antepenultimate game, putting a brace past Raheem Kay and setting up Fahmi Hamizi, a striker who really doesn’t appear to realise just how well he’s doing…

The Marbles’ own midfield was controlled from the off by Go Songji, a lad who’s going to find himself showering in naturalisation papers before too long (and he doesn’t even have a cat!), while his yellow-hued homeland remains… off. And as a whole, the young Scorpions side (if you mentally strip out the left flank, of course, which most of us do try to) could be on the verge of what would amount to a bit of an achievement after a mediocre season, in snatching fourth place from under Marquezian noses. With the fourth huisman of the apocalypse leading Tenderville to victory in Onwere, Portuguese taking a point in Hoxton, and the Spur still in the hunt from seventh despite a home defeat to the PoC this weekend, we’re in for an exhilarating final sesh next Saturday.

Or would be, if MarquezOW weren’t at home to CandelariaAM and guaranteed three points. Can’t have everything, can we?

The big game, though, sees Gamboa host the Marbles. The winners stay up, the losers go down, and no-one has to work out any complicated maths. Not least because McDonald are guaranteed to stay up whatever happens. Contrary to what we said several paragraphs ago.

Mm-hm.

Matchday Thirty-Four… It was a road. A road next to a wall. A road next to a wall that surrounded a park. They called it Wallpark Road. No-one knows why.

And many decades later, in a stadium built upon the aforementioned park, Gamboa FC – with their journeymen Cafundelenses, random Secristanians and assorted Candelarian no-marks (and winger Kayben Nixon, who’s still quite good, but only quite) – lined up against the El din Marbles, with their Sargossans, Nethertopians and the odd Marquezian. On the surface, one could not hope to find two more different clubs from within the same land – the eternally well-to-do supporters of Gamboa against the slum-dwellers of the east, the former league champions against the neuaeveaeu riche. Gamboa have the history, the Marbles the soul. 4-3-3 versus 4-5-1, the quirky young Cafundelense coach against the bespectacled Sargossan veteran. One would survive, the other would be plungéd into anonymity. Everything was in place for a classic.

Sadly, dearest Ophelia, life is shite. And so are these two teams.

The game would ultimately hinge on two moments of genuine quality. Perhaps inevitably, one would come from Raheem Kay, the former Gamboa ‘keeper, who dove like some manner of columbidae to turn Simon Chinn’s penalty around the post with barely millimetres to spare, stopping the home side from going one-nil up after fifty minutes. Adrián Gallo was perhaps lucky to stay on the pitch for his tackle, although we’ve frankly never been entirely confident about the whole last man thing so won’t labour the point unduly, but Gamboa – to their credit – offered few complaints and knuckled down once more.

They continued to press, as they had done throughout the first half, knowing that they desperately needed all three points. For the Marbles, a point would be sufficient – and it all ultimately came thanks to Luis Pavoni. An El din local, Pavoni is hardly the player some once suspected he might be – but that’s no bad thing, in truth. Defensively minded but with a strong range of passing, it’s a real mystery why he and Thomas Schaak (and Erwin Visser, for that matter) have never struck up a game-controlling alliance, but Pavoni at least can still provide the odd moment of brilliance. Breaking past Chris Coventry and Daniel Stride on sixty-five, he picked out Erik Visser with a perfect ball – and no striker worth his salt would have missed the subsequent header offered on a plate. Old Bartolomeu – himself the former Marbles ‘keeper – couldn’t hope to stretch to keep it out, and Gamboa’s hopes were all but dashed in an instant.

Chinn and Potter had opportunities to equalise, but González and Gallo held firm enough to take the points. El din keep their top-flight club, then, and Abiodun lose theirs. No seats were torn up, no riots took place, no goats were set fire to – Gamboa residents are far too genteel for that – but Castelão was sacked soon after, the Cafundelense experiment was brought to a thudding close, the plushest stadium in the whole bloody country prepared itself for another season hosting Brayton Town and similar dross, and an orphan died of diphtheria.

Elsewhere, MarquezOW did indeed beat CandelariaAM in the national derby, rendering most other matches entirely moot by grabbing fourth place. Portuguese helped matters by taking but a point against Caires Sports, while a late, late winner for Robin Smith handed KT Hotspur a much-deserved victory at the MSS and underlining Juan Carlos Revault’s clear (if somewhat belated) potential as a manager of genuine quality.

And a word, if you please, for Green Island. A three-one win at the Bingo hall gave the GIZ eighty-one points – a record since the move to eighteen teams, with their Clausura haul of forty-three also setting a new standard for a half-season showing.

They’re really very good, y’know…

CMS Cup Final Whatwhatwhatwhatwhatwhatwhat? A cup final? Oh, gowon then.

And here’s the thing – it was a classic after all. Since there aren’t many furrunnuhs with a particular vested interest in either Portuguese nor the Scorpions any more we’ll gloss over the details, but the bare facts saw Albrecht FC dominate early on before the pre-match ‘underdogs’ fought back in a valiant fashion indeed. Panadero’s men, still a fine fusion of Candelariasian and Kura-Pellandi (with a bit of assorted Rushmori thrown in for the bargain) could well be inching towards something special despite their ultimately disappointing fifth-place league finish, with a display like this suggesting they’ll be real contenders for XXXVII.

Or for finishing second behind Green Island, anyway.

It’s been a goodly long while since any CMSC2 side has managed to notch up ninety points, with Ironside failing to lose a single game during the Clausura and achieving promotion with five games to spare. The ancient club from central Candelaria now has every opportunity to push on – bankrolled by Pocoan billionaire Deacon Farley, an influx of his nationals is guaranteed, and after sweeping up the best the CMSC2 had to offer last summer they could even trouble the Globe Cup positions with a sufficient cash injection.

The battle for t’other promotion place was rather more entertaining, with the two north-east giants from Khatib-Gassett and Clotaire swapping places until the season’s dying days. Matchday 37 saw Turks’ Club secure their first CMSC1 campaign since XXXII, with the Jukos’ adventures in the SBCC ultimately costing them dear.

A play-off place would be their fate, facing fellow XXXV relegation victims Albrecht Independent in their semi-final. In the other, two rather newer faces faced off for the right to travel to the Solidarity – Frank Merino’s Melin Professionals, who could complete a season to truly crow about by beating Melin & Nader to promotion, and Brayton Town – a youthful, entertaining side under former Caires Sports boss Matt Sampson, and the only other club to maintain an automatic promotion push throughout the Clausura.

At the other end, Maidment went down again, as is their wont. And Fallon United didn’t, meaning that there’s only one relegation place and the champions of the Marquez-and-Outliers-regional-division-thingy don’t get promoted. We still consider this crap as owt, but there you go.

The Tropica CAMAFA League Trophy

Um. So. Yes. Um.

So, we’ve kind of been told… well, asked, requested politely, nudged gently towards, decided off our own bat, to mention a couple of other competitions running throughout the season at various levels, in order to provide a wider picture of the depth of activity in Candelariasian football, and to celebrate… it.

Equally, most of said tournaments and leagues and that are sponsored, and it’s been pointed out that it wouldn’t do us any harm if we, y’know, mentioned them a bit. So. Er, right. Yes. First off, the CAMAFA League Trophy – known for sponsorship reasons as the Tropica Trophy after the Sargossan company helpfully added their support to the competition, aren’t they just a set of bloody lovely blokes? – found its eighth winning side this season, following the final at the Estadio Nacional in Arrigo.

Established following the restructuring of pro and semi-pro football in C&M prior to the XXIX season; the League Tro… sorry, the Tropica Corporation Trophy involves the forty-eight clubs in the four regional divisions across the two levels of the pyramid below the CMSC2. Phew. It’s there really to give these tiddly little outfits something vaguely worthwhile to play for, a nice bit of pot to stick in the trophy cabinet, and to… well… provide the CAMAFA much needed funds via the aforementioned sponsorship deal. But that’s not the only reason we’re mentioning it. Dear me, perish the thought, no.

So, such that it matters, this time around the semi-finals saw Caleb Christmas’ Thoth Town SC – a near Bove side who some may vaguely recall from an extended CMS Cup run a few years back, although if you do you’re frankly as sad as owt, you loser – ousted 3-1 on aggregate by Shane Avdeev’s Condory Bantams, a Marquezian side featuring an undue number of players with names like Alejandro O’Shaughnessy and Pablo Flannagan and that, who you may also remember from an extended CMS Cup run a few years ago, although if you do etcetera and such forth.

T’other one saw the Alber City Wasps oust the fallen giants, Caires FC, over the two legs to qualify for their second tilt at the title – but ultimately fail, with Condory winning. Um.

Sorry, I can’t do this. Explain to me again why anyone should care wha… Ah, because of… With the cost-cutting and the job los… And if I don’t, you’ll send me back to the shack I was brought up in?

Arright, fine, fine. I was only asking.

Oh, I don’t know. They were probably all off their head on pot noodle, or whatever it is these students do. Anyway, the top three who somehow contrived not to be entered into the IUCC were:

1) Universidad de Melin
2) Clotaire School of Arts & Science
3) Bove University

Domesthenous Safe ‘n’ Easy CAMAFA Women’s SuperLeague XXXVI

Look, it’s a range of feminine hygiene products for ladies with… particular needs. Alright? I don’t have to sing their bloody jingle, do I? No. NO! NO, David, I am not wearing the outfit, you’re not going to make me! I’ll write to my MP! This infringes so many rights, I… Thank you. No, thank you. You’re all heart.

So, this is the inaugural edition of this particular competition, reflecting a renewed attempt by the CAMAFA to take a firm grip on youth develop of the pink variety. Many of the older women’s clubs have folded, with CMSC sides petitioned to take responsibility instead and all current SuperLeague sides now attached – albeit extremely tenuously in some cases – to top clubs.

Their personnel range from teenagers, for whom the rough and tumble of the CMSC reserve league or regional divisions is deemed a tad to much for their dainty forms to handle, to tough old bints who’ve been terrorising both male and female amateur divisions for years. Professionals not quite managing to inch their way into their club’s first XIs have also been involved off and on, rather than play men’s reserve team football, with lasses at Caires City and Caires Sports in particular playing major roles throughout this first campaign.

As it was though, it was Albrecht Ladies’ Football Club who emerged victorious, principally through offering healthy contracts to veterans from across the Candelarias rather than nurturing inner-city girrils of their own, but who’s really taking notes, eh? They might have played in front of one woman and her dog most games, on grim industrial estates and school playing fields, but let anyone try and accuse us of not having a fully-fledged women’s football championship now, eh? Sisters are doing it for… Well alright, we’re doing it for them, even if they don’t actually necessarily want a sepera…

Whatever. Bunch of bloody monkeys.

Excellent line of… intimate… goods, though. The missus swears by ‘em.

Candelarias Communities World Cup (sponsored by Liberty Kitchens)

Image

Yeah alright, but bear with us.

Established well over a decade ago, and contested annuallyish ever since in a variety of different forms, lovelifelovefootball.cam’s Candelarias Communities World Cup (sponsored by Liberty Kitchens) was this year part of a week long series of events celebrating the cultural and ethnic diversity of modern C&M through the mediums… media… means of music, art, food, comedy (*shudders*) and, naturally, sport. Principally, football; with tournaments for men, women, boys, girls, the interestingly disabled and big fairy pooftas played out at venues across inner-city Albrecht over the course of seven days.

The highlight, perhaps inevitably, was to be the Communities World Cup – the perfect opportunity to smash prejudices and promote tolerance, inclusiveness, integration, fair play and life-long friendships through the curious avenue of taking several hundred amateur footballers from across the country, dressing them up in the colours of their birth, or parents’ birth, or grandparents’ birth, or where they happened to go on holiday last summer, or where their wife’s from, or where the bloke who do the hedge every other Thursday is from, or where their breed of family cat originates from, or… Well, you get the idea with that.

What inevitably followed was seven days of head-high tackles, reopened wounds establishing bitter conflicts along racial lines, running street battles, flags being set fire to, cats being set fire to, minority food shops being set fire to, three confirmed fatalities, over eighty arrests, an unexpected by-election victory for the Alliance of Nationalist Parties candidate for the Kingston constituency on Albrecht City Council, accusations of rape, counter-accusations of child molestation, a general sense of fun, colour and friendship that will live long in the memory of those fortunate enough to witness it, and a widely expressed conviction that it should never be allowed to happen again.

Liberty Kitchens, however, are a fine firm with many excellent products.

Group A

The opening match of the tournament, played in front of four skiving schoolboys and a tree in the Capana district of the capital, saw something of an upset as the much-fancied Nethertopian team were held one apiece by Chesapeake Bay. The Continental Rushmori outfit were widely expected to be one of the CNCR’s more competitive sides – largely through dint of numbers, with a sizable community of the baseball-loving, burger-munching, democracy-proclaiming Catholics have settled in the Candelarias over the years – but the Nethertopian side drawn from Albrecht expats and Marquezian-raised Dutchies were most people’s tips to face Sorthern Northland in the final at the Millerman Sheppard Stadium.

Instead, the Chesapeakines clung on for the point, and the white-clad frogs from out east would continue to struggle – a goalless draw with the side representing the Arridian Isles setting up an all-important third match with the squad representing the White Minority Linguistic Communities of the Candelarias. Goalless at half-time, the Nethies opted to sack player-manager Lars Bartholds, an Arrigo milkman, and a turnaround in tactics saw Caires street sweeper Tim Peterson rise highest past badger engineer Pete Lunchev to take a one-nil victory.

A hat-trick from former Alber City Wasps star Pierre Jarre, his pro career cut short by a knee injury several years ago, saw Arridia comfortably on their way to a 4-1 win over Chesapeake Bay and a place in the last sixteen.

Group B

Group B was an altogether more event affair – if one discounts Italia, the side representing Italian-speakers who happened to have turned up from various nations over the past forty years or so. They managed just a point, holding Paripana in their third group match before going home. In some cases, given that the game took place on a field in the district of Lindsay, this involved a journey of almost four feet.

Controversy had already abounded by then, with the Cafundelense coach – Greater Arrigo beauty therapist Wilson Castelo Branco – accusing the Paripanan squad of failing to possess a single player born in that neck of the woods between them, and petitioned the tournament organising committee to have them kicked out. Happily, said committee had already wisely spotted the way the worm was turning and had fled to pre-prepared safe houses dotted around the country, while the Koseli Cumhuriyetler side refused to join the Cafundelense protestations despite losing to Paripana on the opening day, in the hope that no-one would point out that barely more than five of their squad actually hailing from the Kosenic republics.

Group C

An all-Rushmori affair in Group C, where a squad of Arrigo-based West Zirconia expats and the grandchildren of fisherman who’d washed ashore on the west coast of Candelaria (he was a very busy fisherman) took on some assorted Zoroastrians in the opening encounter – with Pasarga walking away with a 4-1 victory. The same morning saw a threadbare collection of Kyrinskayans twice throw away the lead against Vegaipala Steelworks an–

Yes, well, thing was… It was pointed out to the organisers that just about the only groups of people not represented in this here competition were Candelariasians who’d actually lived on the islands for more than three generations. This comment provoked a great many furrowed brows; a statement to the effect of ‘since when have they mattered?’; several op-ed pieces in the Daily News accusing the CCWC organising committee of being linked to the radical feminist agenda and the rise of feral youths; further furrowed brows; questions being raised in parliament; a campaign on twaddle which saw #whythefuckcanttherestofusplayinyourpoxylittlecompetition trend for half an hour; Liberty Kitchens threaten to pull their sponsorship; and the CCWCOC eventually succumbing to pressure, hastily cobbling together another contest involving amateur club sides from across the country competing for the right to represent Candelaria, Marquez or the Outlying Islands, and chucking out Lovisa, Sverige and the Pazhujeb Islands from the confirmed list of thirty-two competing teams.

Having played together for years, the village club from south Marquez duly eased to three victories against squads of more talented players who didn’t know each other from Adam. Ree-ally useful exercise, that.

Group D

Meanwhile (or, indeed, that afternoon), the Korslund Millers – a group of glassy-eyed young men who just looked thankful to be allowed to travel to Albrecht and rapidly disappeared into the surrounding countryside as soon as the tournament was over – were having similar fun in Group D. Opening up with a 3-0 drubbing of the best the Candelarias’ Pocoan community had to offer, the side representing the Candelarias Outlying Islands won their group with seven points.

The other opening match saw a team representing the Candelarias’ Muslim community take on… er, Bettia – a one-nil victory for the nth-generation Auroras marred by protestors condemning the C&M MuslimYouth United organisation’s alleged links to the extremist Jebli Shai group. The disparate team had ultimately imploded by Wednesday, with three players sent off late on during their 1-0 defeat to Queer Poco el Mono Ara, following a mass brawl over whether the prophesied Guided One will be Muhammad al-Mahdi, the twelfth Imam returned from the Occultation, where he has been hidden by God since 874 CE or, in a more esoteric view confined to several members of the squad from the Thompsontown branch of Continental Concepts PLC, Ahmed from Accounts.

Group E

The second half of the draw opened with Imomotimi Adekunde’s African side going down 3-2 to Somewhereistonia, in a game that featured the emergence of a true potential star – sixteen year-old apprentice carpenter Tom Mazrocis, who soon had CMSC scouts lining up ahead of his matchday two encounter with Steroga the following day.

Despite being as utterly overworked as the rest of the CCWC’s stars (those who made the final were truly on their arses after seven games of sixty minutes in seven days, but the important thing was that everyone enjoyed themselves, wasn’t it? Wasn’t it!?), Mazrocis starred again with the winning goal but would come unstuck in the final game against Maccabi Candelarias, failing to break Solly Horowitz’s net. Indeed, the team predominately drawn from Bove were unlucky not to win the group, with two decent goals chalked off for offside. Maccabi Candelarias manager and local community leader David Fleischmann subsequently acknowledged that his side probably hadn’t done enough to warrant more than a point in any case, and declined to finger the referee on charges of anti-Semitism, prompting several members of his squad to take ill and retire to their hostel for lie down.

In the other match, nr Caires televangelist Kashka Ogaga’s late brace for Africa against Steroga failed to earn them a second round berth.

Group F

With a confident 2-0 win over Taeshan, the team representing the Han Empire entered the fray in Group F. Buoyed by the arrival of thousands of refugees and fielding a team including just about any half-decent player of a vaguely yellow complexion; Jo Sangdon’s Daehanjeiguk looked like having a real shot at ultimate victory – but their performances soon began to deteriorate. Nr Lavange side Ordway Town FC managed a 2-2 draw, a comeback result with greengrocer Michael Shaw scoring past civil servant Kim Cheolho from the half-way line, while the Han & Friends went down a goal to nil to Sargossa in the final game.

In a tight group, the Sargossans (and a few hopeful Valerians) emerged undefeated but were held to draws in both their earlier fixtures, while Clotaire gravedigger Zaiden oh my god we have a rugby team’s late winner over Ordway Town proved ultimately fruitless as Taeshan exited on goal difference.

Group G

Commeth the hour, commeth Sorthern Northland. Overwhelming favourites to take the title, the Sortherners were able to call on a potential catchment area of at least 1% of the entire country, with their squad including Albrecht FC academy graduate Jonathan James in goal, as well as several CMSC1 youth drop-outs, and former semi-pro players Hernando Conway (once a striker at the Condory Bantams) and John Hill (formerly a left-back with Saurin I.A. and Magnus United). Playing in front of a packed crowd in Irish Street, Daigh Quaine’s men prepared themselves to dazzle. A goal up against Ransome-Bkyki Island inside three minutes, Sorthern Northland looked set to cruise to victory and continued to force the talented Bkyka ‘keeper and handyman Timothy o’ t’son o’ Matthew into a string of smart saves.

And then, I’m afraid to say, they got proper cocky. Show-boating followed, goals failed to come, and even Jesse t’Carter’s equaliser failed to provide a real wake-up call. The Sortherners duly fell to defeat in the competition’s biggest upset so far.

Following a brief interlude, during which the pitch was relayed and a donkey was rescued from a tree, those few hardy souls who had remained behind to watch the group’s second match were treated to a no less surprising affair. The Grand Democratic Duchy had Yaforites, Yaforites a-plenty: half-Yaforites, quarter-Yaforites, people who’d spent their gap year discovering themselves in Ajer; they all turned up to take on the VOICE AllStars – a team formed from the VOICE (Victims of Illegal Colonial Expansionism) pressure group and featuring refugees from the Macedonian empire, including Joel Sbaïz’s brother Jamie between the sticks – and promptly fell to a highly embarrassing 2-0 defeat.

The Yaforites failed to bounce back on Tuesday, with the Sortherners instead left to celebrate a 3-0 win – and celebrate they did, the pub in the Irish Street embassy drunk dry as the city shook to the sounds of traditional Snorthern ditties, the clattering shoes of hornpipe stepdance and, for some reason, a bit of bhangra. Still thoroughly sloshed come Wednesday lunchtime, the squad were in no position to take to the field against the AllStars; a brief community conflab decreeing that Irish Street eleven men, good and true, be dragged kicking and screaming into red shirts and onto the field of play.

Remarkably, these stand-ins contrived to lose 3-1 and were banished from the capital forever more, while Nilan Ramri’s late winner for the Yaforites availed them to naught – the two true footballing powers both exiting to their less heralded counterparts.

Group H

The final round of opening fixtures – played late on Monday evening after everyone had rather forgotten about them – saw the biggest margin of victory of all, with the squad of Squornshelan refugees beating a united western continental Rushmori outfit 7-1. Three braces and an own goal downed the combined team of former natives of Wigu, Lussolavizzovia, Delamawaria, West Kovanel, Switzalandian Kovanelles and Lake Ontario and their descendents; the game descending into farce by the fiftieth minute (an event utterly against the spirit, one feels, of amateur community football) with Wigu-born striker Tuahi Mano, a Fallon Town fishmonger, and defensive team-mate Alex Young, eldest son of the Delamawarian consul in Albrecht, were both sent off following a centre-circle set-to.

There was the potential for similar rambunctiousness in the other game, with a united Timonium team – forcing together refugees from Lower Timonium and their hated neighbours from Lower Timonium, along with a couple of bemused Upper Timonians down the flanks – threatening to dissolve into heated combat themselves. Instead, they produced a 3-2 win in a fine opening performance, the Songstress duo of Jacob Williams and Roberto Weber terrorising Brutland and Norden ‘keeper Camicio Varioria all evening.

Little was truly expecting of the side representing the Candelarias’ 40,000 strong Nord-Brutlandese community (we used a calculator an’ everything), but Rufo Borelliani’s team rallied impressively against Squornshelous in their second game while the Rushmori sides settled for a point apiece.

Timonium’s chances in their final game appeared to have taken a hit with the unexplained absence of star striker Williams, following (though obviously in no way connected to) earlier post-match comments querying why none of the ‘Gordon Bay City communities’ (whatever they are) had been permitted to take part. Roused by his disappearance however, and putting aside the fraught and fractured politics of their homelands, the Timonians pulled off the group’s third 3-2 result to finish top of the pile, ahead of the Nord-Brutlandese.

Second Round

Rather larger crowds were on hand throughout Thursday to enjoy the second stage, even in the absence of the Northlandish outfit. The opener saw Ariddia through against Cafundéu, but the second match failed to go to form – Marquez’s Steelworks, the only side with a nine-point record, going down 3-1 against the combined might of Thompsontown and Rose of Sharon.

The ties featuring some of the minority groups whose presence in the Candelarias makes a tad more sense, meanwhile, saw a series of ‘upsets’ for sides finishing second in their groups. The overall highlight saw a seven-goal… thriller – replete with twenty-two barely sentient corpses rising from the grave to lurch around the pitch for sixty minutes – for want of a better cliché, where the absence of Mazrocis (seemingly prohibited from playing by his as-yet unconfirmed professional club, proved Somewhereistonia’s undoing as they were unable to make the most of some laughable goalkeeping from Daehanjeiguk’s Kim. A hat-trick from laundry executive Rupert Choy (some of these flags-of-conveniences really are awfully dubious) saw the sons of the Empire and Other Assorted Yellow Bits through to face Brutland and Norden in the quarter-finals.

The local posse of Nethertopian expats came out in force later in the day (don’t these people have jobs, for heaven’s sake?) to give a new-look side the boost they need to overcome the probably-not-Bedistanis, while the Rushmori success continued into the wee small hours (funny, that). Pasarga’s well-drilled and tight-knit side inched past the Candelarias Outlying Islands representatives, continuing an impressive showing for the smallest Rushmori community in the Republic (apart from Logrians… and Illytrians… and Eagle Islanders… and YnosYnosi… and… oh, fudge). They were soon joined by Sargossa and Ransome-Bkyki Island, while every member of the ousted Korslund Millers squad soon vanished into the ether, apparently less than keen on returning to their Green Island home…

The Ariddian Isles 2-1 Cafundéu
Vegaipala Steelworks (Marquez) 1-3 Bettia
Somewhereistonia 3-4 Daehanjeiguk
VOICE AllStars 1-3 Brutland and Norden

Korslund Millers (Candelarias Outlying Islands) 0-1 Pasarga
Sargossa 2-1 Maccabi Candelarias

Quarter-Finals

It was never thought to be possible. But on Friday, at just around half past ten, for the first time in history – Albrecht was officially declared sick to the back teeth of football.

With locals refusing to skive off any longer, the four matches were played on deserted, windy moors (those members of the MuslimYouth United squad who, having been kicked out of the camp earlier in the week, had consoled themselves with cruciferous vegetables laced with psychostimulants) in front of several busloads of the unemployed, elderly and intellectually sub-normal. Whilst competition organisers were being dragged before a CAMAFA committee their fate; Ariddia continued their mildly inexplicable run into the semi-finals, an early strike from David Carozza-Johnson – the current chairman of the Young Modern Liberal Party, don’tchaknow – failed entirely to give the Nord-Brutlandese much of a headstart against the Han Empire as they fell behind inside fifteen minutes, and Sargossa and the Bkyka went to pens – San Juan taxi driver and left-back Ángel Luis Valle putting away the winning spot kick.

The Ariddian Isles 3-0 Bettia
Daehanjeiguk 2-1 Brutland and Norden
Nethertopia 3-1 Pasarga
Sargossa 1-1 Ransome-Bkyki Island (1-1 AET) (Sargossa wins 4-2 on penalty kicks)

Semi-Finals

You can’t expect even fit young men, with their bulging biceps and chiselled jaws, ooer, to still be playing at full whack come their sixth game in six days, so there were few amazed nor disgruntled faces when both semi-finals ended goalless after extra time. Granted, there were few neither resigned nor contented faces, either. Faces were at a general premium. Pity, ‘cos they missed some really sparkling penalty shoot-outs, so they did.

*sigh*…

The Ariddian Isles 0-0 Daehanjeiguk (0-0 AET) (Daehanjeiguk wins 5-4 on penalty kicks)
Nethertopia 0-0 Sargossa (0-0 AET) (Sargossa wins 4-3 on penalty kicks)

Third-Place Play-Off

There was one, hastily arranged and played in the carpark outside the Millerman Sheppard Stadium. Yay.

The Ariddian Isles 1-0 Nethertopia

Grand Final

And so, as the Autumn sun set over Sunday, a handful of hardy ethnic supporters and assorted concessions huddled together for warmth in a lofty corner of the MSS like so many sheep/baby lemurs/emperor penguins as they watched the final of the first and last Candelarias Communities World Cup played out on the hated turf of the capital’s boxy little nightmare.

But, and at the risk of displaying any undue enthusiasm for this whole ghastly mess, the occasion was at least enlivened by the snippets of news filtering through from Hanhyeong; to whit, that at least some form of government appears to have popped back up in the Empire, meaning that half the squad and their supporters suddenly found themselves with the opportunity of packing up their stuff, waving goodbye to greasy uncle Dongwon and his all-you-can-eat noodles (12 Larkin Street, New Cockyard, opposite the specialist lingearry place), and getting the hell out of this inane little country once and for all.

No wonder they look so chuffed… particularly after Lee Sungjae spun round professional saxophonist Oliver Suárez and Valle to plant a perfect strike past Benjamín Collado shortly before the half-hour whistle to hand the Han a 1-0 lead and, ultimately, the title and the cup and medals and that. Bless.

Daehanjeiguk 1-0 Sargossa

The Prince's Shield

Yes, ladies and gentleman it’s that time of the year again when the locals of Khaldoon clamor to get a look at the foreign football talent on display and pack the little stadiums even though they should be at work. Free tickets for school children and nuns were the order of the day as 6 teams from overseas made the trip to join league champions Royal Khaldoon and Prince’s Shield n00bs Jonastown United.

Reigning Shield Holders Arrigo Portuguese returned from Candelaria and Marquez, Porto Lacruz appeared for Cafundeu, Tyrrin’s own Tyrrin Royale, Connar Republic’s Capital City SC and Rushmore neighbors Sargossa sent Deportivo Soluca while Atlantas Klaipaada made their fourth appearance at the competition.

As usual the teams were split into two groups of four with the top two from each group advancing to the elimination round.

Group Stage

Group A: Results and Table
Matchday 1
Royal Khaldoon 5-1 Tyrrin Royale
Porto Lacruz 2-0 Deportivo Soluca

Matchday 2
Deportivo Soluca 5-1 Tyrrin Royale
Royal Khaldoon 1-2 Porto Lacruz

Matchday 3
Tyrrin Royale 0-1 Porto Lacruz
Deportivo Soluca 3-0 Royal Khaldoon

Code: Select all
Pos  Team                       P   W   D   L   GF   GA   GD  Pts
   1  Porto Lacruz               3   3   0   0    5    1    4    9
   2  Deportivo Soluca           3   2   0   1    8    3    5    6
   3  Royal Khaldoon             3   1   0   2    6    6    0    3
   4  Tyrrin Royale              3   0   0   3    2   11   -9    0

Group B: Results and Table
Matchday 1
Atlantas Klaipaada 0-1 Capital City SC
Jonastown United 1-3 Arrigo Portuguese

Matchday 2
Capital City SC 3-1 Jonastown United
Arrigo Portugese 5-1 Atlantas Klaipaada

Matchday 3
Jonastown United 0-3 Atlantas Klaipaada
Capital City SC 1-4 Arrigo Portugese

Code: Select all
Pos  Team                       P   W   D   L   GF   GA   GD  Pts
   1  Arrigo Portugese           3   3   0   0   12    3    9    9
   2  Capital City SC            3   2   0   1    5    5    0    6
   3  Atlantas Klaipaada         3   1   0   2    4    6   -2    3
   4  Jonastown United           3   0   0   3    2    9   -7    0

Prince's Shield cherry-poppers J-Town United fell at the first stage as did Royal Khaldoon in front of their own fans. Fan favourite's Atlantas Klaipaada failed to reach the knockout round for the first time while reigning champions Arrigo Portuguese and Porto Lacruz eased into the semis with three straight wins. Unfancied Capital City SC grabbed a knockout berth while Deportivo Soluca took second spot in Group A. The Tyrrin Royale team fell apart and were sent home with the worst goal difference.

Knockout Round

Porto Lacruz 3-0 Capital City SC

Deportivo Soluca 1-4 Arrigo Portuguese

Group A winners Porto Lacruz racked up their biggest scoreline of the tournament to send home Capital City and set up a show piece finale against Arrigo Portuguese who looked to take their second shield in as many years after beating Sargossa's Deportivo Soluca.

The Final

Porto Lacruz 1-2 Arrigo Portuguese

The team from the CMSC would retain their title as fans were treated to the spectacle they had hoped for since the participants were announced. The two biggest teams in the competition faced off and the Candelaria and Marquez team overcame the opposition in front of a packed Royal Stadium.

So congratulations to Arrigo Portuguese and comiserations to everyone else. Thank you everyone for participating and here's to Prince's Shield V.

Can someone give me a working link to NSfootySIM please? Right now I score old fashion with a spreadsheet and dice formula.

Am I getting this right, that this is where I should post my Balida Futball League at?

* Chinhu Zakjuri took the table last season, but due to some bureaucratic mishaps they did not enter the TQCC. As a result, they were granted entrance to this cup. Also as a result Minaota, who would normally enter into the Globe Cup, has been denied entrance into that cup. Since thety are not a second division club, they cant enter the SBCC. They will enter the Globe Cup, once League Ultimate gets more entrants.

Kingdom of Dancougar College Football
Season Capsules: 2051/52 Competition, 2052/53 Classification

2051/52 Competition

As soon as Yuki State at Helmsley ascended to the perilous heights of college football, here they were crashing back down. Tony Travers' team had a strong run at the IUCC -- and there will be more on that later -- but that, coupled with their appearance at the Series B Champions' Cup, put a lot of strain on a team known more for its stout defending than anything else. Or maybe it was just a rough year to be in the Coastal Plains, where five teams in the eight-team league finished with seven wins from fourteen matches. Helmsley found themselves in an incredible sixth place despite being only five points off the pace; needless to say, they wouldn't have a chance to defend their national title.

The Shinobu Valley produced two of the strongest teams in the nation, Callihan and Reyes, who both finished at 10-3-1 to be ranked No. 1 and No. 3, respectively, in the media poll. Reyes were flustered to be ranked behind a team they'd taken four points from during the regular season, and Shadow Cliffs wondered why they were ranked Callihan despite having a superior goal differential and an equally-impressive 10-4-2 record in what was arguably a tougher conference. Callihan and Reyes vied for the Shinobu Valley title and each finished with 33 points, roughly doubling third place Shinobu State. Shadow Cliffs had to tangle with 10-3-3 Concannon in the Gilderome River Conference, and there was a less insane gap of nine points between first and third.

Ultimately, though, neither as really willing to lose sleep over what the media thought, since the No. 1 team had never won a title before. If anything, they'd done Shadow Cliffs and Reyes a favor by planting the kiss of death on Callihan. The attention going into the tournament then turned to the bubble. The biggest howl of disapproval came from Stanwix, who finished second in Lunarossa but somehow managed to come up with a -2 goal differential in the process. Wightman, a point behind them but at +8, got the only at-large bid from that conference. Negley Run, fourth in Lunarossa at 7-4-4, felt like it should have slipped into the 40th slot instead of 7-4-3 Pembrooke, a third bid from the Shiba Valley.

Both Pembrooke and Wightman justified their selections in the opening round, with the former taking both legs from Rizzi and the latter crushing defending finalist Hinamizawa 5-1 in the first leg en route to 7-4. Reyes were the highest casualty of the first round, going out to Bremley 4-2 on aggregate. Now they had a reason to complain loudly about the league tiebreakers which stressed overall goal differential over head-to-head results. Winning the conference would have been the difference between an at-large bid and a bye to the Conference Round, but analysts pointed out that Bremley, at 7-3-4 out of Shapiro, should have been easy pickings. But after Bremley downed Wightman 4-2 in the next round, nobody was willing to talk any more smack.

Hazuki State opened their tournament in unfamiliar territory - unranked. But they dismantled Gabthley 5-1 in the opening leg en route to 6-1, so no worries just yet. Callihan also rolled in its first leg, 4-0 away to Monagham State, and won the tie 5-0. Pundits merely stated they were stalling their inevitable collapse, but for now, they were in the Sweet Sixteen. The aforementioned Bremley joined them. Shadow Cliffs, however, were out after running into the Royal Academy. An away goal for the Royals was the difference in a 4-3 aggregate win. So after all that talk about avoiding the curse of No. 1, both Shadow Cliffs and Reyes had managed to exit early, anyway.

Callihan drew the Royal Academy in the Sweet Sixteen and fans were treated to a pair of dogfights. The home fans were bitterly disappointed, as the visitor won each leg, and Callihan's 2-0 offset the Royals' 1-0. Bremley continued to slice through the field, removing Zane Island from contention with a pair of 2-0 wins. And speaking of weak teams doing well, Pembrooke downed Cyert Tech 3-2 to make the quarterfinals. Former champions Keats Island won an entertaining tie against Hazuki State 6-3 on aggregate. Other big names exiting at this level were former world champions Thane, who needed penalties just to reach the Sweet Sixteen, and Chastain.

Bremley and Pembrooke were finally ousted, beaten by Kabuto and Callihan respectively. There was now some cautious optimism that Callihan's ranking truly was indicative of their quality, regardless of what beef Reyes had with them. Keats Island advanced comfortably over Wexford 4-1, and Concannon rounded out the semifinalists. That produced a field as strong as anyone could remember, and the ties lived up to expectations. Keats Island ground out a 2-1 road win against Kabuto and the teams drew 1-1 in the return leg. Things were even tenser in the other tie, where Callihan produced a thrilling come-from-behind 5-4 road win after the opening leg was drawn 1-1.

So the fans had some great storylines to choose from in the final. Would Keats Island become the first school to win three tournament titles, or could Callihan become the first No. 1 team to take it? Keats Island grabbed the lead on a first-half corner, but before halftime, Callihan leveled and seized the momentum. This was apparent when they scored the go-ahead goal not five minutes from the restart, and after some frantic defending a near-miss counter, the whistle blew and Callihan were crowned champions of Dancougar.

IUCC Roundup

Thane were granted the first slot for the 21st IUCC tournament, correctly this time, having been given the opportunity to defend their world title with a couple of extras on the line. Could they become the first school to threepeat? And if they couldn't, could one of the other schools win Dancougar's fourth straight and make it the first nation to do so? Having the tournament in Dancougar certainly helped, as the IUCC board had returned to the old system of holding the tournament in the nation of the previous winner.

Helmsley were a good bet with their responsible defense, and Hinamizawa were joining them, having turned down the SBCC slot reserved for the national runners-up. That deferral created a juicy matchup in the group stage of the IUCC, as Helmsley and Hinamizawa met up in a rematch of the national title game. Travers' squad once again put three in the net, but this time it was without reply. Fortunately for Hinamizawa, those were their only dropped points out of five matches, and both teams cruised into the quarterfinals.

Thane didn't have it nearly so easy, and when all was said and done, they needed tiebreakers to escape from their pool. It became clear early on that three teams were in contention - St. Martin, Van Prooijen, and Thane. Thane lost 2-1 against St. Martin but came back from a goal down to beat Van Prooijen 4-3 to secure three crucial points. Ten points were good for a second-place tie, and but their goal differential was superior to Van Prooijen's.

All three Dancougaran entrants in the quarters, then, but that number would be whittled down to two after play was finished. Thane were the victims, losing a close one to Vephrall's Till College, 1-0. There were complaints that the linesman had twice flagged Thane incorrectly for offside, but television replays didn't necessarily agree with those claims. Hinamizawa and Helmsley were through, though, even though the latter needed penalties to do it. But that seemed to give them the momentum they needed, as Helmsley cruised 3-1 over Paruvia for a place in the final.

Hinamizawa, though, ran into Till and did well to force overtime after playing to 1-1. During the extra half hour, though, their legs gave out and Till ran out 3-1 winners. The championship game thus presented Till with the unique opportunity to make it a perfect three-for-three against Dancougaran opposition. It was a back-and-forth game filled with vigor, aggressive runs, and goals. Oh, the goals. Till finally gained the advantage in the 73rd minute when a penalty gave them a 4-3 lead which they would carry to the final whistle.

SBCC Roundup

With each Series B tournament, it was becoming clearer and clearer that Dancougar's collegians were unable to compete with professional sides. There were plenty of explanations. Mostly, they came down to stability. Although some college programs had been able to distance themselves from their peers and remain competitive year to year, none had been able to monopolize Dancougar's developing talent. That way, no one had really taken command as a truly elite program which could have a legitimate shot at the title every season. And even though some said that the college system's lack of depth was reflected in the growth of the D-League, Dancougar's success at the international level proved that it was producing capable players. So once again, that argument boiled down to one of dispersal.

As for the results themselves, they didn't read favorably. Although Purnell had won its preliminary round tie, they were downed by SC Ianisle 3-1 in the playoff round. It was more of the same elsewhere: FC Nacional 5, Granger Island 3; Keto Lodilunaji 6, Alameda Academy 5; Turmondale United 3, Yuki State at Helmsley 1. That none of the schools had been whitewashed was certainly a positive, but they were lacking in crucial areas. When one came right down to it, any college team could be expected to have two or three players capable of playing at a professional level and little beyond that. Questions were being raised about the College Alliance's continued participation in the SBCC, although the Sports Ministry believed it was still a net positive despite the lack of results.

2052/53 Classification

Callihan's quest for a repeat started reasonably, but by the halfway point, they looked completely out of the Shinobu Valley race. With one win from their first seven games, Callihan looked nothing like the team which had stormed through the country a year before, owing in part to the loss of several key players to the D-League draft and a failure to convert their breakout year into recruiting success. They had to go 4-1-0 down the stretch to bring their record up to something respectable, but 6-4-4 was only good enough for third place and nowhere near what they needed to earn an at-large bid to the tournament.

The media's job of choosing a No. 1 team was easy, though, thanks to the exploits of the University of Dancougar. Despite being one of the nation's largest schools and rocking a prime location in the capital, the school had historically underachieved. Only once could it claim eight wins in the 14-game season played by the Yuki CPL, which made their stunning 11-3-0 season even more incredible. They were one of two unbeaten teams on the year, the other being 8-6-0 Frickstowne, which was ranked No. 7 after comfortably winning the Kishin Plains. Most curious was Lunarossa State's No. 6 ranking: 8-4-3 wasn't bad for the Lunarossa CPL, but it was hardly worth such accolades in many eyes. It was even more surprising that Bouquet and Aiken, which both finished 8-3-4, didn't even crack the Top 25. A spot in the tournament was all that really mattered, though...

Purnell College caused some consernation for sneaking into the tournament with a 6-6-2 record, mostly on the strength of their entertaining brand of football that saw them among the national leaders in offense. Wexford thought it deserved a look ahead of some five-loss teams that got a nod, notably Hazuki State. Pembrooke, Carling, and Pollock were also talking points for fellow bubble teams Glassport City, Vartla City, and Craig State. As usual, vindication would only come with a good showing in the spring tournament.

At-Large Round
(#3) Baptista College 2-4 (#18) Shiratori University
Mugen Bend State College 3-3p Aiken College
(#23) Okinomiya Academy 3-1 (#24) Shinobu State University
Carling College 3-1 Pembrooke Academy
Keats Island University 5-0 Purnell College
Hazuki State University 2-5 (#25) University of Shiba at Grandborough
Pollock College 3-0 (#16) University of Fujiwara
(#19) Eastern Desugaia University 2-1 Bouquet College

There was a familiar face... Shiratori University were back in the postseason after a ten-year absense, and their first opponents were Baptista. They were ranked third out of the Big North, level on points with second-ranked Kabuto and consigned to the at-large round on tiebreakers. Like Reyes the year before them, they faltered on the big stage, losing both legs by a combined 4-2. Pollock shook off the criticism by downing the University of Fujiwara with a pair of wins, while on the campus of Aiken College, the lack of an away-goals rule once again reared its ugly head. Both legs were drawn and even though Aiken had two away goals to Mugen Bend's one, overtime and penalties were needed to break the deadlock.

Conference Round

(#17) Thane College 9-5 (#20) Hale University

(#7) Frickstowne College 6-6p (#21) Reyes Academy

Some said the Curse of No. 1 had been lifted by Callihan. Others called it a statistical outlier. Whatever it was, the University of Dancougar would lend one theory credence based on what it did against Earlsburg, the unranked and unheralded champions of the Igor Valley. When Earlsburg won 2-0 on the road, analysts rolled out the "I told you so"s and kept them coming until the second leg finished scoreless. But even if that was a disappointment, there was plenty of excitement to be found elsewhere. Lunarossa State and Thane rained goals on their opponents to cruise into the next round, Seiei overcame a first-leg deficit with a 4-2 road win against No. 2 Kabuto, and Gilderome ground out a highly tactical 1-0 result against Shiratori. Reyes, in the meantime, staked their claim to the comeback of the season. Down 4-2 in the second leg of their tie with Frickstowne, and losing 6-3 on aggregate, Reyes scored three goals in the final twenty minutes to force a penalty shootout. It was Frickstowne's first, and only, loss of the year.

Sweet Sixteen
Earlsburg College 6-5 (#11) Seiei University
(#23) Okinomiya Academy 2-5 Aiken College
(#4) University of Gilderome 6-2 (#6) Lunarossa State University
Keats Island University 4-5 Pollock College
Shapiro State University 0-2 Granger Island College
(#5) Trafford Technical Institute 5-2 Carling College
(#12) Ledesma College 4-3 (#13) Berkeley State University
(#21) Reyes Academy 2-2p (#17) Thane College

Earlsburg proved their victory in the prevous round wasn't a fluke, holding Seiei 2-2 on the road to preserve a one-goal advantage. Lunarossa State were finally exposed by Gilderome, who rolled 5-2 in the home leg en route to a 6-2 aggregate victory. The Lunarossan champs never looked threatening, but the league marched onward anyway, couresty of Aiken. Thane used the aggregate scoring rules to their advantage in what was a textbook case of losing the battle but winning the war. A 2-1 home loss in the second leg against Reyes evened them up at 2-2. But because of the scoring rules, they went to a overtime instead of Reyes celebrating a comeback win. Thane eventually won in a shootout to make the quarterfinals.

Quarterfinals
Aiken College 4-2 (#5) Trafford Technical Institute
Granger Island College 3p-3 (#12) Ledesma College
(#17) Thane College 5-3 (#4) University of Gilderome
Pollock College 2-5 Earlsburg College

Pollock's great run was brought to an end by Earlsburg, who started to think they had a serious shot at the title. Chants of "Our name is Earlsburg!!" were following the team wherever they went, and morale on campus was high. But who would they have in the semis? Aiken was also looking good after polishing off Trafford Tech, and two former champions remained in the field. Granger Island needed penalties to down Ledesma, and Thane won both legs against Gilderome. So, while neither was in dominant form, both were bringing history and swagger to the field.

Semifinals
Earlsburg College 2-3 (#17) Thane College
Aiken College 0-3 Granger Island College

Thane's 1-0 victory at Earlsburg was the first sign that the Cinderalla run was coming to an end, but the Igor Valley champs still had some fight in them. The return leg finished 2-2, so they could at least exit the tournament with their heads held high. The winner awaited Granger Island, 3-0 winners over Aiken. Aiken was blanked in both legs. That created a matchup of two schools that were each vying to become the first to three titles. History would be made in the National Stadium.

Collegiate Grand Final
(#17) Thane College 1p-1 Granger Island College

Put ranking aside, and what do you have? Two schools which had claimed four of the previous nine Grand Finals. Needless to say, these were two programs that were capable of developing quality players, and by extension, playing quality matches. The game did not disappoint. And even though it required a penalty shootout to settle things and award Thane title number three, fans came away from the game satisfied. Both teams had played spirited football. Both had produced chances. And most importantly, both teams had left everything on the field, exactly how it should be in any tournament final.

International Qualifiers

Although Earlsburg had one of the more impressive runs in the tournament, they were unable to garner the fan vote needed to crach the SBCC list. That went to Pollock, who had more national recognition. Ignore, for a moment, their head-to-head loss to Earlsburg in the quarterfinals. Surely, then Earlsburg would at least play in the IUCC. But the College Alliance went with teams that were perceived to be stronger overall rather than beneficiaries of a strong run of form. Gilderome and Aiken, also quarterfinalists, were chosen to fill out Dancougar's IUCC allocation.

IUCC1: #17 Thane College (national champion)
IUCC2: #4 University of Gilderome (College Alliance selection)
IUCC3: Aiken College (College Alliance selection)

SBCC1: #17 Thane College (national champion)
SBCC2: Granger Islane College (national finalist)
SBCC3: #1 University of Dancougar (regular season #1)
SBCC4: Pollock College (fan voting)

And so on to the 11th West Zirconian Academic League.
For those who forgot the previous ten:

Not that you really wanted reminding, of course.

Once again, the league was a close affair - except for Redwood University, who struggled to win a match. But by half-time, the top six were separated by just three points, leaving the whole thing wide open.

And so it remained. Redwood finally got their victory, while Prifysgol Gymraeg finally pulled away from the pack.
