Any help with this?

You need to extract all the files from the zip file before you run the program.

Thanks. I've had WinZip for a long time but never understood how to use it. I figured you needed to remove the file from WZ, but I usually try not to take risks if I don't know how to use a program.

Thanks again.

I don’t know a lot about Java, but it looks like it might just be a matter of copying the relevant bits of code from ui/LeagueCreationScreen.java to ui/LeagueResumeScreen.java. I don’t know when I’ll have time to figure out how to do that.

About three months later, apparently.

A modified version of NSFS, dubbed NSFS 3.0.1a, is now available (source code). It includes two changes:
  • The maximum rank points can be altered after a league or cup is in progress.
  • Team style modifiers can be edited after a league or cup is in progress.

I have debated on just when to post this for discussion on the scorinators. I really wanted to wait until after World Cup 58 finished but I believe it needs to be done now so that this discussion can run its course before we begin to vote on hosts for the next cycle.

Point 1. I ran this on Xkoronate because the community at large had misgivings over the results that would be produced by NSFS. I do not want to hear "If we used this scorinator I would be in". that will not serve any purpose other than to piss me off.

Point 2. After taking the time to run basically the same tournament twice (That is quite a job, try it sometime), The randomness shows up even more prevelent in this scorination than it did in the official NSFS scorination. As a result, I am inclined to believe that the problem, if the community feels there is one, may be in the bonus awards systems. But as several different methods have been employed since WC50, I cant pinpoint the exact problem.

Point 3. Let's keep the discussion on this here instead of the WCDT.

Here is the final match day and tables that accompanied it. If you really feel it neccesary i can post the entire mass of things but the final tables are what matters.

Intriguing indeed.

Some groups appear to have wildly skewed in favour of those who were RPing (groups 11, 12, 13, 17)
Some groups appear to have skewed in favour of those with a higher rank (groups 14, 16)
And in other groups, who knows...

Group 19 for example, managed to overly favour my puppet's RPing, whilst simultaneously punish Astograth's RPing and rank, yet reward Cotdelapoms' rank. Odd.

Even more bizarre to see Antoletia run away with group 18 in another scorinator, and to see that group 15 is another open competitive mess of a group that remained so in both scorinations. Not sure on the cluster of KPBs in these two groups but these scorinations would appear to suggest that they were close together. Particularly given the comparitive lack of RPing in the groups and randomness that would promote as the max rank goes up.

There are groups here that, as far as my interpretation of the way the three Rs are meant to interact, look pretty much spot on however. Groups 12 and 13 for example, and group 17 is far clearer. Group 17, of course, ended up finally rewarding the RPing and rank of Chetkosk, as well as the rank of Kulverint, and the other RPers were clustered nearer the top. But, given the amount of RP bonus you'd expect to have been awarded to Chetkosk and Kulverint respectively, the xkoranate scorination appears to be "fairer". And do please take that term with the pinch of salt it requires.

Be interesting to see what others think.

And of course, many thanks for doing this.

Group 14 had the two highest-ranked teams at the top in the other scorination, too, but this way around it's 2nd seed above 1st seed rather than vice-versa.

My compliments on an heroic effort. Any former World Cup host will understand just how crazy dedicated you were. A couple of questions:

1. Which formula was used in the xkoranate run (there are three)?
2. Which bonus settings were used in the xkoranate run (there are now three, and any number of weighted percentages as well)?

As for my initial take on the results and the alt.results, they both roughly mirror reality. Which is to say that there's a lot of quirkiness in sport. Look at the epic fails of France and Italy in the 2010 World Cup, or Slovenia slamming the door on the heavily-favored Russia just to get in. Would those events have repeated in an "alternate scorination"?

The settings used were really simple. I left the effect of bonus at the base 15% and left the bonus formula on basic. The SQIS formula was used, as that seemed to be the acceptable alternative to NSFS. Xkoronate style modifiers were used.

SQIS is the alternative, at least until that slacker who did Footba11er supports style mods and a full-fledged extra-time/kicks-from-the-mark scheme. :) I was hoping you had run with the new xkoranate setting "relative", but you can't have everything.

Thank you for your efforts to bring data to bear upon the questions of the community.

Since SQIS is ratio-based, and the maximum points therefore doesn’t matter, using relative bonus instead of absolute wouldn’t make a difference.

Since SQIS is ratio-based, and the maximum points therefore doesn’t matter, using relative bonus instead of absolute wouldn’t make a difference.

Good catch; thanks.

And in other groups, who knows...

I would argue that's precisely what you want. I think most of us can agree that, generally speaking, our collective complaint with NSFS is that it's too random. Here we have results biased more towards the other Rs, RP and Rank. I suppose one could take this study as an indication that SQIS goes too far in the other direction, rewarding RP and Rank too heavily...

But as everyone else has observed, there's plenty of randomness in this SQIS scorination (as there should be, TBI correctly reminds us). I don't see these SQIS results as being vastly superior to the canon NSFS results, but I do think the balance between the three Rs is more visible. There are hints here that xkoranate is worth a shot.

I would also like to thank ASMV for volunteering to undertake this alternate scorination, completely of his own volition.

Does anyone know what the style points do for golf players?

Golfinator Help File wrote:In Golfinator, each golfer defines a style with a six-digit number, using each digit 1-6 once each. A 6 is best, a 1 is worst. These numbers correspond to relative strengths of different parts of the golfer's game, bearing in mind that no professional is truly weak at anything.

First digit = Length off the tee
Second digit = Accuracy from the tee
Third digit = Long irons
Fourth digit = Short irons
Fifth digit = Wedges
Sixth digit = Putting

So a XXX564 is a short-game specialist, a 62XXXX drives long but not necessarily straight, a XX56XX is particularly skilled with fairway irons, and so on. Remember to use each of the digits 1-6 only once for each golfer!

xkoranate 0.3.3 is now released for Windows and Mac OS, adding the following features:
  • RP bonus types now include “Absolute”, which is the same as “Basic” in previous versions, and “Relative”, which will adjust the maximum skill + RP points based on the actual maximum skill + RP value achieved (as was done in the I World Games).
  • “Use starting grid” option for auto racing, which applies time penalties based on drivers’ positions within the group (the first driver in the group list starts at the front and the last driver in the list starts at the back).
  • New sports and events:
    • Field archery: men’s/women’s individual barebow, compound, recurve
    • Australian football: forty-minute match
    • Bandy
    • Boules sports: boule lyonnaise, pétanque, raffa

    • Pesäpallo
    • Powerlifting: men’s/women’s lightweight, middleweight, heavyweight, super heavyweight
    • Racquetball
    • Roller sports: inline hockey, artistic roller skating, roller speed skating (men’s/women’s 300 m time trial, 500 m sprint, 1000 m sprint, 10000 m points & elimination, 15000 m elimination)
    • Rugball
    • Rugby league nines
    • Summer vigil fasting (as seen at the Games of the III Olympiad, Columbia)
    • Wushu: sanshou, taolu
  • Bug fixes, including incorrect recording of extra time results in round-robin tables and crashes caused by groups containing null participants.
Merry Christmas, Margaret. :P

I’d like to do a significant overhaul of various parts of xkoranate for version 0.4 rather than continuing to make incremental improvements; if anyone has any novel ideas for new or restructured features, now would be a good time to mention them.

Apologies for being so terribly slow on the uptake here - you are not my only victim, the entire WCQ passed me by as well - but are there any plans to incorporate Test match cricket into xkoranate? This would be the ultimate vindication for my idolatry of you and your skills!

If and when TBI finishes his test cricket scorinator Redballer, I plan to incorporate it in some form.

I'm going through the painful process of naming cell references so I can follow the logic of my many patches. :(

The main issue now, apart from clarifying my work so CH can make sense of it, is to automate more of the handling of declaration instructions. Redballer 1 requires too many manual interventions for various cases.

Does anyone know if there are any tutorials on how to use xkoranate?

I have to say, on new-user friendliness, NSFS beats xkonerate down the street and back. I downloaded xkonerate, and though I could probably do something now that I've seen Zug's guide, at the time I was clueless as to how it worked. Then I downloaded NSFS and had a decent simulation of my nation's baseball season in ten minutes (most of that time spent thinking up names for teams and arbitrary ranks.)

Yeah that sounds about right. I didn't get xkoranate for a few months but then I figured it out about a year ago. But NSFS does have significant problems that I don't like, so I still prefer xkoranate. Its actually really easy when you know how to use it.

I'm glad that NSFS has been successful for you. It's a great scorinator to use when you're just trying to figure out how this stuff works at the beginning of your NS Sports career. You will find that it is a more than adequate scorinator for your domestic leagues, whether the sport is baseball or football.

I would still encourage you to keep toying around with xkoranate, however. Its learning curve is slightly steeper, yes, but it is a more reliable scorinator in terms of results, it offers more sports, and it can be applied in more complex tournament situations. It's worth trying to pick it up.
