Your nation's close-combat weapons

Postby Nornalhorst » Tue Jan 03, 2012 3:29 am

When your soldiers find themselves face to face with an enemy only about 3 feet away from them what do they do? What kind of techniques do they use and what kind of equipment are they given to take out the enemy?

The soldiers of Nornalhorst actually excel in close-combat with many of our soldiers being vampires the last thing you want to do is get in close with a vampire, a single punch could blow a man's head off scattering their brains all over the ground, and then you definitely don't want to get bitten or you will quickly find yourself paralyzed and drained of all the blood in your body. Plus our speed and reflexes would make it very difficult to react at close range to a vampire charging at you literally at 100mph trying to tear you limb from limb.

But at times our natural strength just isn't enough to subdue or kill some of our stronger enemies so we developed a few weapons to deal with them at close range.

Standard issue combat knife.

If you are referring to purely military weapons, then most soldiers will go for either the shovel, hatchet, utility knife, or sword bayonet. These weapons are handily stored and are trained with extensively, their heft is comforting, and the steel is strong. Should there be room before the enemy reaches, the sword-bayonet will be applied to the rifle for even longer reach and use as a kind of spear or lance. Though it's advised that one removes the magazine if at all possible, as it is likely to catch in close combat and damage the magwell or feed system.

In history, however, the kusthet would show a noted preference for crushing weapons, maces and hammers especially, as they couldbe primarily made of wood, which suited early kusthet and the limited amount of iron and other metals available in their territory.

To begin with, we have our claws, which are usually Seven Centimeters long in length with an extremely sharp tip that is made for piercing skin and getting underneath it. We have five claws in total, which normally work in conjunction with eachother to cause the most amount of damage (Usually via getting a grip on the skin and muscle inside and tearing it off)
Using this method, Dragonkin are able to tear most things to shreds in five or seven seconds.

We also have our teeth as it would happen, it's not the most convenient weapon to use in close combat, but if an enemy is pinned to the floor (Should be easy from the mass of a Dragonkinian in comparison to most lifeforms), a swift bite to the neck is all it takes to bring down the opponent, using their teeth and a lot of pressure to get a grip on the windpipe and then proceeding to remove it in the brutal way possible.

Then we have our own weapons forged from advanced materials, for example; a melee weapon. Most melee weapons in the military tend to be just various knives and such, the range is quite limited since most opt for their claws in close combat, for aiming for vital areas (E.G Neck, Head, Center Mass and Groin) can produce some fairly good results; usually resulting in the target succumbing to their wounds even if they have defeated the Dragonkinian.

Most have got bayonets, and they chaargge!
Alternatively, some soldiers have an extendable knuckle blade to stab. Very messy, and not preferred. It's more of a psychological impact.
Teddy bears retain their claws from their past, but some bears don't maintain them, so they could snap. Or some aren't long enough. Or some have lost the genetic disposition to extend them, so their claws are stuck. Just saying.

Dravesgarde's standard weapon varies from region to region, as our military forces are under command of their regional governors. Commonly daggers are used, although more outlandish solutions such as shovels, broadswords, bladed knuckles, dogs, and many other weapons have been used during conflicts.

And that isn't even counting private security in hold of corporations within our borders.

All soldiers are issued a sword and a bayonet.

Note: The bayonet is mainly issued as an excuse for soldiers not to have to use their sword to cut everything.

Considering most of our troops are cyborgs, it's typically unwise to get close, as they have more armor than a standard soldier. That being said, each unit is issued a deploy-able wrist-blade in an arm of their choosing. Standard tactics involve stabbing with the blade or simply punching with the cybernetic arms. The latter is actually quite effective, given that the robotics tend to be much more forceful than muscle.

The infantry of the Grand Empire of Esiadin are issued bayonets as a standard weapon for hand to hand. Officers are issued sabres, both ceremonial and for the field, however, the majority of them elect not to carry them because they are considered cumbersome and tend to tangle the legs at inopportune times.
Many of the infantry have stated their preference for their issue shovels, used primarily for digging trenches, graves, foxholes, or any other military necessity. They have claimed that it has proved to be more reliable and handy than the bayonets they are given. Many of the soldiers also carry personal knives of varying length. Whether they decide to unsheath them for the fight depends on the individual.
Although the ornithopter pilots rarely ever use them, they are all issued standard knives as well, used for perhaps cutting themselves free out of a precarious situation (should they become tangled in their parachute lines, or something similar) or perhaps cutting their way to freedom through hordes of the enemy. They are also given a sidearm (Military issue 9-shot revolving cylinder- 9mm) But that is not relevant for this topic.

First off, for most Non-Humans, we have our claws, teeth, and talons to use as weapons and they are deadly effective as are our powerful flexible tails.

Most Dragons also have their breaths at their disposal, with fire being one of the most effective, particularly for clearing out trenches and bunkers:

A demonstration of the devastation of a Dragon's fire breath

Soldiers are heavily-trained in the use of the bayonet, which is a deadly tool to use overall:

Image

Knives are also issued, particularly to special and black ops forces:

Image

Some officers and even soldiers also bring with them swords into battle, these are mostly sabers, Medieval broadswords, and Gladiuses used by the old Saurion Army:

The Dwarves also employ their traditional axes and hammers as well:

Finally, the Ponies are capable of using their hooves to devastating effect while unicorns are able to gore enemies with their horns, similar to the Ceratopsians.

A Celestial Legionary is required by standard Legionary requirements to have at least two close-quarter's weapons. However what those weapons are and look like will vary quite extremely.

Every Legionary must have:

1. A bayonet that may be affixed to his rifle in such a way that he will have a combined reach from the tip of his shoulders to to the tip of the bayonet no less than that of the rest of his century.
2. A weapon which may be used in one hand comfortably and capable of piercing or damaging armoured enemies. Proficient enough to be used both for slashing and hacking. And light-enough to carry comfortably with the rest of one's kit.

Though not a requirement both weapons ought to also be capable multipurpose tools or fulfill at least one non-combat function. Swords and axes for instance that can be used to saw or chop wood.

Most legionaries prefer the short sword, usually of a gladius hispanicus style for simple traditions sake, short curved blades like Xiphoi and machetes are also common. The preference is for short, double-edged and curved blades. Better for quick slashing attacks at short range, since bayonets generally serve well enough for the CC mid-range and any other range beyond that it is better to simply hold the rifle.

Officers are required to carry swords as a symbol of their station, but the shape and kind is likewise optional. Most prefer a falchion, being both functional and powerful, as well as being easily decorated and traditional symbol of office. Usually decorated, especially at higher ranks.

The military does not specifically feel the need to issue a close combat weapon, on account of the fact that any normal person here owns and carries something like that around, typically a Big Knife(tm), which is used for various sundry tasks: Sharpening pencils, opening packages, picking your teeth, cleaning your fingernails, hunting, eating, hacking your way through brush, fending off bears, mating rituals, generally being fashionable, and only occasionally for stabbing someone - but they asked for it. It's a fashionable accessory no one over the age of 6 would ever be without, so we don't feel the need to issue a separate weapon.

Our soldiers are expected to carry a large knife - e.g. a bayonet, kukri or machete - though they are used as tools more often than as weapons. (They are also expected to carry a small pocket knife or multi-tool.) There is some training in knife-fighting but the bayonet is not considered a major weapon and is not often fixed to the rifle.

The entrenching tool can also be used as a weapon in a pinch.

...How the fuck did they not get shot at this point with 16+ rifles firing in their general direction?
Anyway...

Three feet distance? Right? It takes about two seconds at that distance for one of these to be emptied into their overall body if through some miracle aforementioned Section didn't put them down through some godgiven miracle.

Aside from that obvious moment; the PLA issues a Bayonet, and a rather nifty do-all multi-tool that dares to pose as a shovel. Officers used to carry Jian longswords, then Kuoming started doing it and related it to the Monarchy so we stopped.
