The length of time on NS doesn't confer immediate maturity or wisdom, but it is generally a good barometer of said traits. Players with older nations are more likely to be older themselves and are thus less likely to go on a random troll/ flaming spree. Yet I digress, it was simply an interesting idea, not a practical plan of action, heh.

Interesting, yes, and I would like to think that the worst that would happen would be whatever joker got tagged as mod of the month would go on a random warning spree just for shits and giggles. *Not me. I would NEVER do such a thing. *

You know, on second thought, probably it doesn't matter what kind. My first act would be refusing the post. I've been in that sort of position many times on other sites, and I always fail miserably. I'm not a person who does well with being counted on in an online setting, where I can be lazy and procrastinate and have the option of just disappearing and not having to face anyone I've let down.
So, yeah, I should never, ever be made a mod under any circumstances. I've been there elsewhere and know I'm not a good candidate for the job despite how I may or may not seem to others and regardless of the fact that I do seem to be doing okay with staying on as Chief Justice of The South, although that is a fairly low-maintenance position.

An interesting social experiment would be to give every nation who has been on NS for say, five years, and is willing, mod-ship for a month. Your feet in their shoes so to speak.

In addition to the age of the nation, you would also want to require a minimum post count for forum mods to make sure you don't get someone who's been answering issues for years, but is new to the forums. Zephie created a nation in 2005 or so, then came on NSG in late 2010, trolled all over it, and insisted he never heard of OSRS.

There was once a time when NS was a wasteland, scorched by the fires of douchebaggery and wank. They say that the Great Mountain of Stickies was made of the degraded corpses of fallen Generalites, killed in the Battle of Abortion Debate, circa 1904. The moderation army, unable to contain the enemies advancing on all fronts, needed hope. They needed recruits. So they pooled from the general populace, selecting and training individuals to fight for the cause. In the future, somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, Tom Cruise Socialist States Owen was one of these 'Newfag' moderators. They thought they had hired a saviour.

He was a tyrant.

The Great Max Elder once said that some men just wanted to watch the world burn. SSO was one such man. When he was appointed mod, the short equilibrium of peace was broken. Wannabemod, one of the latest moderation additions, found himself impaled on a pike, a pike made of the magic of the Kiss Mods Arses Demon, with a tip made of solid Serious Business steel. In a swift move, SS0 - newly titled Archduke of Shawaddywaddy - collated a diverse force of warriors, lying in wait in the deep caverns of the Sanc Valley and Legion Hills. When the great Lord Master of the Legion Hills Huerdae was not appointed mod, they were turned from the good side. Initially they searched for a leader, but no man stepped forward, and they settled with 'that random dick' SSO. Ok, some did. I had four! AT LEAST FOUR!

By now it was too late for the old order. They underestimated this new threat greatly. Kat attempted to intercept the Shawaddians at the Dark Gates of Moderation, but she was swept aside. The Shawaddians passed the gates front, changing course for The Great Rifts of NS Sport. The Royal Lord Protector of this sanctum of sporting revelry Archregimacy sent out his armies valiantly, but no shots were fired – they simply could not risk the haven of the Rifts. A peace deal was agreed in exchange for the newbery of NS Sport. With great irony, they were executed by the Great Guillotine of 1-2-3 Easy Scorinator. The Old Boys Club looked on, having appeased the bloodthirsty Shawaddians. This would be the only time that the Archduke SSO would show peaceful tendencies.

The movement through The Mountain of Glo’Bal Eco’Nom’Ikes was swift and versatile, cutting away the poor storefronts. This opened the way to the Heartlands of Moderation, as the Dark Gate of Moderation was too heavily guarded…now the moderation stared down the barrel of this newly dominant mod. They engaged, charging like lions towards the Shawaddians. But it came to no avail; cut down like rats, the moderation fled, hoping to gain counsel and strategy from the Great Elder Max himself.

Nonetheless, it was too late for these mere mortals. The missiles rained on the Barren Devil Plains of Forum Seven, destroying the insult to human existence that it was. Next the great Archduke turned his attention to the Rolling Fields of General, where the Generalite herds flocked to nurture their young and feed their elderly. Strategic outposts such as the collated topic stickies and Fort Rules Thread were destroyed. They now invaded, combing through the Generalites in a bloodlust fuelled massacre. As the Generalites screamed the Shawaddians gained pleasure, SSO screaming with delight as he cut through the Mac-using anime hipsters and their Anarchy and Civil Rights Lovefest hides.

He knew no mercy, nor compassion. Finally in his sights was the most populated area, the MTArchy of International Incidentia, a colourful tropic region home to several large cities. The godmodders spurned forward against the compact, professional cluster of Shawaddians. They attempted to autohit but to no avail – the Shawaddians simply cut them down with automatic ignore cannon fire. The Archduke SSO himself had used his mighty Delete Sword to change the course of battle, having wiped away the raiders, F7’ers and most Generalites with its fearsome blade, and this battle was no different. As the godmodders, noobs and metagamers felt the rein of his blade, it was feared no-one could stop him. Offered a deal on year long RP’s which amounted to six posts of people with vaguely fantasy themed names having dull conversations, the best roleplayers, the Elites of the Guild of Roleplaydom, backed down. While Hataria and his likes burned, The Great Lord Jenrak and the Mentor Guards watched on with cold pleasure.

But the Great Elder Max had regrouped his forces at the Dark Gates of Moderation, hoping to finish off the exhausted Shawaddians. SSO led his troops in one last desperate charge, incurring losses on those who still opposed their vigilante cleansing of the douchebaggish infection in the realm of Nationstates. Finally they were slain, and the Archduke disappeared into the mist. No-one knows what happened to him after his mod status was removed. As some reacted positively to the wholesale deletions of groups, and others cried over the horror that had been the Great War, the Great Elder Max shook his head from the top of Barry Mountain.

…and that is what would happen if I became a mod.
