World Lacrosse Championships 13: RP/roster/results thread

Postby The Kytler Peninsulae » Thu Nov 17, 2011 2:59 pm

Unlucky for some, lucky for others, it's the magical thirteenth edition of the World Lacrosse Championships!

This tournament, for the first time in WLC history, will utilise a ranking system, and the brand new "MyLAX" scorinator will be in use. RP will remain very much the primary determining factor in results - a maximum RP bonus will be worth more than twice as much as the ranking difference between world #1 Civil Citizenry and a newbie. Furthermore, a non-cumulative "rolling RP bonus" is in effect, which will kick in with full effect almost immediately.

(For more information on this and other technical details of WLC 13, see the original details from the Kytlerian bid.)

Eight groups of four teams will be drawn. The top eight teams in the competition will be seeded, and one seeded team will be drawn into each group. The remainder of the draw will be fully random. The draw will take place live at 1545 GMT/1045 ET on #nssport, and will be posted to this thread shortly afterwards. These teams will play each other three times - firstly on Kytlerian soil, then on each others' home venues. The top two from each group will go through to the knockout rounds, which will be held in The Kytler Peninsulae. For more stadium details, check this thread on Sunday.

The following 32 teams are involved in WLC 13:
1. Mytannion
2. Wolfmanne
3. Djocoranga
4. Polar Islandstates
5. The Kytler Peninsulae
6. Swartaz
7. Carasatoga
8. Abcdefghijklmnopqrstuk
9. Altimarus
10. Civil Citizenry
11. Victorwick
12. Mangolana
13. Darmen
14. Cosumar
15. Carmadin
16. Delaclava
17. Cyborg Holland
18. Howdeellow
19. Crotunda
20. Erathore
21. Krumbia
22. Thatius
23. Sarzonia
24. Goebbelsland
25. Western cuba
26. Lonaga
27. West Guiana
28. Allamunic States
29. Patricant
30. Soviet Canuckistan
31. Arcatea
32. Chetkosk

Edit after ABK pointed this to my attention: Style modifiers are on a scale of +2 to -2. Whatever your style modifier is, that's how many extra goals you will score and concede in each game.

Country: Allamunnic States
Team: Volunteers
Coach: Frank McDowell (Age: 42)
Style Modifier: Most Defensive
Team Colors: Grey, Blue
Home Field: Detailed Below

RP Permissions: Do you know what? If you're doing anything outside of the scorers, TG for approval first. There, that's out of the way.
RP Scorers: Yes, but keep in mind team's approach (I still know little of lax, so I still don't really know what that means for this)
GodMod Scores: Make it interesting, if you absolutely must do this. TG for approval first.
RP Injuries: Nothing beyond game-ending. I make the call beyond that. TG for permission first, preferably.
GodMod Injuries: Nothing beyond game-ending. TG for permission first.
GodMod "Other" Events: Only if you do something fun or awesome with it. Boring people will be shot.
Penalize/Eject Players: Yep. Make sure its for a charicteristic penalty, though. Usually roughness-related or somesuch.

Goalkeepers

#08 - Leopold Fuchs (6'0", 256lbs, Age: 29) - Despite some teething issues last year, Fuchs, with some help from his defense, has proven as able a goal-keeper as there is anywhere in international lacrosse; only a handful (no more than ten, thus far, to be exact) goalies can lay claim to being a championships caliber goalie, and Fuchs is one of them. Though a little more prone to getting flustered than one might like, he'll keep a cool head more often than not.

Defenders

RD#41 - John Willems (6'1", 238lbs, Age: 26) - John is a little bit young, and is just out of college; his skills are still very much developing, and he is a very good player, but he's a little prone to fluctuations in his performance. Well, he was, but he's proven far more steady of late, and is rather likely to rotate. He's a little less 'grind-it-out' minded and tends instead to focus on simply forcing turnovers, and so he adds a little more versatility to the defense.

MD#49 - Ryan Oslo (6'0", 224lbs, Age: 29) - Oslo was one of the team's new faces last year, after leaving a four-year veteran role in the national league to come play for the Volunteers. He's not too much unlike the old breed of Allamunnic defensive player, although he is a little bit lighter and faster than the old norm was. More than anything, though, he's still the type of physical player that Coach McDowell has always favored. Oslo provided a steadying influence and physical anchor for the defense to operate around last year, providing stability to an inexperienced group.

LD#46 - Slava Hendriks (5'5", 138lbs, Age: 29) - Slava is a very fast, very skilled and plenty physical, just like almost all Allamunnic defenders. Slava specializes in forcing turnovers, though, rather than simply grinding down and wearing out attackers. Slava's a proven commodity on a team that was short of them a year ago, and is still one of the more experienced players.

Midfielders

RM#32 - Zak Mueller (6'4", 228lbs, Age: 26) - Zak may not be the kid of the team anymore, but he's still young, and, more to the point, like most of the team, is still a young player who was forced to assume a greater role because of last years' newly-enforced eligibility rules for the national team. Mueller's certainly got plenty of physical talent, and his relatively long tenure on the team (he's one of only a handful of players remaining from the Vols' WLC 7 championship run) all place him in the position of one of the team's new leaders.

CM#38 - Walter Marsh (6'1", 236lbs, Age: 33) - Walter Marsh is the oldest, most experienced players still with the Vols. Like fellow right-midfielder Zak Mueller, he was on hand for the team's first championship run. And like Mueller, he's had to step into a leadership role. Formerly a veteran substitute position player, Marsh has stepped up admirably in the team's leadership and experience vacuum to teach the younger players and cover for them when they inevitably make mistakes in their on-the-job-training (as it were). Marsh's steadying influence has also helped the midfield to remain one of the team's main offensive forces, as his responsible play often leaves Downing free to go to town on opposing defenses.

LM#36 - Cassie Downing (5'6", 144lbs, Age: 23) - Cassie is something of a sporting prodigy in the Federation, in Field Hockey and Track and Field, most notably. Lacrosse has proven to be no exception to her talents, and she's quite fast, with a fair amount of power. She lacks a certain amount of refinement in her playing, because of her relative inexperience, but she's pretty damn good, despite that. After being pushed into a position of increased responsibility last year, she filled it with spectacular ability, becoming the team's leading scorer and de-facto on-field leader. Not bad for someone still in college.

Attackers

RA#15 - John Dahlgren (6'1", 268lbs, Age: 29) - John has had the unenviable task of going from a supporting player to a prolific group of scorers to the stabilizing veteran in a group of attackers who are by and large only barely out of college. Though he still acts first and foremost as the veteran supporting player, Dahlgren has made that adjustment well and has remained a key to the offense, setting up plays and stepping up to make them happen when necessary.

CA#18 - Joanna Sommers (5'8", 141lbs, Age: 25) - Joanna gave strong service on last year's team, and proved more than capable of making plays where necessary, especially with Dahlgren's supporting talents anchoring the forwards' attack. Sommers showed a knack for embarassing defenders and opening scoring opportunities for herself, Erika, and Cassie.

LA#17 - Erika Shoenburg (5'4", 137lbs, Age: 25) - Erika's stamina wound up being an issue during WLC 10, but it gradually stopped being one as the tournament progressed and her endurance increased. By the end, Shoenburg was a keystone to the team's offense, and worked a devestating tandem with Sommers, with whom she excelled at embarassing overenthusiastic defenders and inflicting pain on defenses (figuratively, of course; she's one of the smallest and least physical players for the Vols).

Reserves

FR#11 - Gaarutt Aronbacher (6'0", 244lbs, Age: 29) - When the new rules for national team eligibility came through, Gaarutt was among the first players to renounce their domestic league commitments. Aronbacher, as a result of the Vols' general short-staffedness, has been required to learn all of the positions and act as a general reserve and substitute for any player that needs breather or is injured. Given his natural talent, he's as well suited to most of the positions as anyone, but he's also still learning to some extent for his new roles (with the exception of attacker), and so he'll probably make some mistakes in other positions. With the addition of other reserve players, though, he'll likely be able to stick to his original position of attacker.

DR#40 - Karrin Connoly (5'6", 124lbs, Age: 23) - when looking for a defensive reserve, Coach McDowell looked for something other than his usual preference; rather than a large, bruising defender, a smaller, scrappier player. He found what he wanted in Connoly, who rather being small and skill-oriented (although she's plenty skillful), is smaller and just as physically inclined as some of the larger players. Moreover, she seems to be rather durable, since despite heavy play in college and high school, has yet to suffer a major injury (knock on wood!) and despite her physical style of play.

MFR#30 - Haanryk Thursunn (6'2", 265lbs, Age: 23) - Thursunn is a new face on the team, opting to go to the Vols rather than immediately pursue a career in the national league. Thursunn's size and playing style lend themselves to him playing as a defender or midfielder rather than as one of the Vols' more skill-oriented forwards (though he'll tend more towards the latter than the former). With a little bit of college goalie time under his belt, he might, in a particularly bad pinch, be called upon to relieve in goal, although that shouldn't be necessary, due to the presence of...

RGK#04 - Sheila Waalturs (5'5", 130lbs, Age: 22) - A goalkeeper with blazing-fast reflexes and a knack for placing something, be it a stick or herself, in the right place at the right time, Waalturs will serve as Fuchs' backup should he need to come out during games. A recent college grad, she'll need a little bit of adjustment time to the big leagues, and will have to rely on speed in net, since she pretty much lacks much in the way of real size.

Team Overview:
Few people saw the WLC 10 championship run by a rebuilding Volunteers' squad coming, the squad and its fans included. Operating with a squad with little room for error or injury, the team pulled together and put together a run to the finish, and resparked enthusiasm from Allamunnic fans after a few lackluster finishes in previous years.

The team, though as close-knit and as much a seemingly low-budget operation as ever, has added a few reserves to make things easier on the players and to start preparing players to step up should any of the current starters depart for some reason.

Look for the same physical approach as in previous years and an effort to wear opponents out despite low numbers; the players on this squad have some ridiculous endurance as a result of their practices and experiences playing short-handed. Furthermore, God help any team that lets Cassie Downing get loose.

The team is looking to make its way back to the finals again, after a finals run that ended in a championship series loss to Sarzonia; since the team is exactly the same as last year's, there's no reason they can't be a championship threat once again.

Stadiums:

Federal Steel Field (Thomasburg, Stalhamark, FRAS)(Capacity: 142,000) - Federal Steel Field is the largest stadium in the country, and normally plays host to the gridiron squads of the Thomasburg Ironmongers, Steelers, and Boilermakers. Thomasburg lacrosse clubs and soccer clubs also play in the modern, well-maintained facility. Teams playing here should be wary of irritating the fans; beer bottles have a way of flying out of the stands towards a team that has rubbed the home crowd the wrong way. And there will be a home crowd. A large one. Though the stadium does boast a retractable roof, look for the cold-loving Allamunnae to leave it open, even during the chilly early spring.

The Royal Arena (Koenigshalloe, Ostlund, FRAS)(Capacity: 140,000) - Just smaller than Federal Steel Field (and boy do they know it), the Royal Arena sometimes is known as the Haldstadt pleasure dome; if there is a more beautiful and shiny stadium in the country, it's hiding itself well. The Arena serves as the home for Koenigshalloe's royally-sponsored teams, who are almost all called the kings. One of only a few stadiums in the country with a roof at all, the Arena's enclosed spaces will ensure that games take place in regular conditions here.

Cataphract Memorial Stadium (Skarrsboro, Skraelingia, FRAS)(Capacity: 118,000) - If there is a more potentially-hostile crowd in the country, it's probably in Thomasburg. The Skraelings love their sports as much, if not more than most people, and provide a loud atmosphere for games, and though beer bottles may not fly out of the stands, insults will a-plenty to any team they don't feel is playing to the best of their ability. Skarrsboro in early spring is pretty damn cold, and the stadium lacks a roof, so teams playing here should plan on bundling up.

Winston Chauncey had hit the pinnacle. His four goals in the fourth quarter catapulted Civil Citizenry to a decisive win in the championship match of the twelfth World Lacrosse Championships, in front of a capacity crowd in his homeland. He had been the most valuable player all tournament, guiding his squad to just one loss, a lackadaisical thrashing to Darmen. A combination of consistent goal-scoring and contagious intensity kept the fire burning in the bellies of all the hungry Citiz enraged after a disastrous campaign in Allamunnic States and Mangolana.

Does he himself still have the fire? What is left for him to accomplish? World champions? Check. International number one ranking? Check. Best player in national history? Check. Right now, it's about doing it all again.

At twenty-eight years old, this will be his fourth WLC campaign. His international goal total has grown into the triple-digits range, a phenomenal feat. Yet for all of his success, and with no hint of decline on the horizon, pundits are still questioning his motivation.

"I didn't come back just so I could half-ass another run-through," Chauncey said. "You know how many people have tried to hate on us? They can't handle the truth. It's mind games, mind games, trying to distract me and my team from coming through when we need it. But we're up to the challenge. We've already done it once."

Yet Chauncey has spoken extensively of his disdain of the Citiz Lacrosse Administration's lack of funding to set up a nationwide lacrosse league. He once called the situation a "tragedy," and said the CLA is holding the sport back from attaining the level of support it has the potential to garner. Some have said his stature as a national sports hero makes him a prime candidate to take control of the CLA and invest in a new league.

Roswell Ayers has something to say about that. The six-year veteran director of the CLA says his primary focus has been on nurturing the best national squad in the multiverse, and that he's had wholehearted support for his efforts. "Bringing the World Lacrosse Championships, the most prestigious event in the sport, to Civil Citizenry was just one major accomplishment," he explained. "But how great was it to win that international title? How great would it be to win it again? It's about loyalty to your program, giving it the right funding and attention, and that's why we've devoted our efforts to putting together this amazing squad."

It's a squad that will be spearheaded by Chauncey until he finally does decide to retire, be it this year or a decade from now. He has the kind of talent where his decisions will determine not only the course of his own career, but the direction of the Explorers. The team is hoping he will delay the day when he lets go of over 150 goals and pursues new interests. Could that day be soon?

"Let's not be premature or immature about all this," Chauncey said. "We're out here to win a championship, not worry about what comes after."

Coach Hini La Huey
The Coach for the WG Lacrosse team was the most winning coach in the now defunct National Lacrosse League, winning 5 of the 8 league championships, with a record of 54-12. He is 7-4 all time in the World Lacrosse Championship.

The West Guiana squad for the 13th World Lacrosse Championships, appeared in their first WLC tournament in WLC XII, for their first time the team did very well winning their group with a 6-3 record and moving onto the Round of 16, there they beat ten seed Delaclava, 10-5. In the quarter finals the WG team played eventual World Champion Civil Citizenry just barely losing to the CC team 8 to 9 in a very defensive game. This time around the team hopes to get further into the knockout stages, however only time will tell when the schedules are released.

FINAL: winner SF1 v winner SF2 [Vengife]

Alaer: Alphurst Park, capacity 12,240
The largest city in the south of the country has the second-smallest stadium in the competition. It's not a major lacrosse city - baseball and watersports are more popular in the summer - and Alphurst Park is better-known to many Alaerites as the location of major firework and laser displays for Diwali and New Year.
Edencliff: Chalk Field, capacity 18,127
A picturesque, hill-enclosed port town in the north-west, Edencliff is a major tourist destination, and is fiercely proud of its environmental credentials. In addition to the stated capacity, a temporary stand made mostly from recycled materials sits in the empty corner of the stadium, increasing the capacity by 1,093 to 18,127. This stadium (and the temporary stand) was also used at the Baptism of Iron.
Kytler Bay City: HNT Field, capacity 16,116
The largest city in the country, and once synonymous with squalor and crime as a centre of illegal trade for the whole of Rushmore. HNT Field is in a heavily industrial, moderately unpleasant area of the city, one that the soccer team fled gleefully to a much larger new venue in a more affluent district, but is perhaps the most atmospheric lacrosse venue in the country.
Nuffield: Highfield Avenue Stadium, capacity 15,830
A university city and cultural centre just off the northern shore of Kytler Bay, Nuffield has an importance beyond its 80,000 population, and can viably call itself a "lacrosse town". Highfield Avenue Stadium is located on the edge of the Nuffield University campus, and is the largest university sports field in the country.
Roddens: Roddens University Field, capacity 10,930
While Highfield Avenue Stadium may be bigger, Roddens University Field is the spiritual home of Kytlerian lacrosse. It was the home of the national team for WLC12 fixtures, and in fact was the first Kytlerian venue to host international sport. The fans camped out on grass banks behind either goal are notoriously enthusiastic, and the extension to the smaller East Stand (out of picture) has increased the capacity to a very symbolic figure.
Santa Mordana: Westpoint Field, capacity 12,560
Santa Mordana, at the western edge of the southern peninsula, is the centre of the country's Hispanic population, and has perhaps the most diverse and exciting cuisine of any Kytlerian city. Westpoint Field is rather less interesting, but is a short train hop or long walk away from the pleasant downtown area and docks.
Sillham: Brusel Park, capacity 16,176
Along with Nuffield, Sillham is another small city that can truly call itself a "lacrosse town". Located on the southern shore of Kytler Bay, it is also noted for its beaches, and accommodation is widely available. This might be the best venue for a fan who wants to see a game without following a particular national team to go to.
Vengife: Taa'kai Memorial Stadium, capacity 24,128
In the rural south-west, this was the historic aboriginal capital. Mass murders took place in the area when the nation was colonised by European settlers, but the city survived, and is still a hub for what is now a minority aboriginal population. Now, it will host the WLC final, as well as the opening ceremony (which takes place prior to the KP-ABK game, which ICly is first). Expect fabulous tribal dancing upon being greeted to this newly-built stadium, named in memory of an entire tribe slaughtered in the colonial wars. All four stands are similar to the one pictured (but without the large entrance gap), with small corner sections enclosing the stadium.
Zeiven: Dockside Stadium, capacity 18,560
Once a ramshackle athletics track in an ugly industrial location on the south-eastern coast close to the Albundanian border, the city council renovated it to host national athletics competitions and to host a Kytlerian Lacrosse League franchise. How did they do so? They basically ripped off the iconic pillar design of Zube National Stadium. It's not plagiarism when you're copying your own work, though; both venues were designed by the omnipresent Bright New World.
Zube: BN Field @ Donaldson Park, capacity 22,560
Donaldson Park, on the south-eastern fringes of the Kytlerian capital, is one of the largest urban parks in eastern Rushmore, and a sporting hub. The National Stadium is near the park's western edge; BN Field is around 500m away, and was built for baseball. Therefore, it is dominated by a large L-shaped stand, with outfield bleachers.

The Kytler Peninsulae is a small federal republic located in eastern Rushmore (map; takes a while to load). In common with most of that region, the Kytlerian people are at least mildly obsessed with sport, for the most part, and although the country is very young and small - there are fewer than ten million people in the country - it has already established a proud sporting tradition, which started with a run to the quarter-finals in WLC12 despite losing their first two games. Eight wins in a row followed that, a streak no other team in the competition equalled. Since then, a string of Olympic gold medals from Lasft and first-time runs to the playoffs in both the World Bowl and World Baseball Classic stand out as particular accomplishments.

The country's politics are moderate, leaning libertarian - though there is a well-funded and seemingly omnipresent police force, owing to the historic problems before the modern-day country was formed, where anarchic rule by drug-dealing mobs was the norm. Expect plenty of police in the ground, but don't expect much hassle from them. Unless you're Mytanar, probably; the police were so concerned about Mytannion's notorious sporting hooligans that they insisted on a WC-style playoff rather than the seeded playoffs of WLC12, so that cities could find out in advance if they were likely to have to host a playoff game involving Mytannion.

Accommodation is widely available, although not necessarily in all cities; some fans may find it easier to base themselves in one of the country's many coastal resorts, where a string of low-cost, adequate-quality, locally-owned guest houses can be found.

Well everyone USN won the 3.9 million dollar bid to televise the 13th addition of the World Lacrosse Championships. since the last championships and the WG's team run lacrosse has really made a come back in West Guiana, with talks of bringing back the old NLL for one more shot.
Ya, John however though the main reason why the league had to fold was because they rented out large capacity stadiums, yet they only had cowards of fewer than 5,000 in a 70,000+ stadium. However though people aren't watching us to complain, they are here to see us talk sports. Yesterday the groups were released and our team has to work hard since they must face off against Civil Citizenry not once or twice but three times. Maybe then in the WLC we can have a true international rivalry.
Mmm..Sam you might be correct, facing of against a very good CC team will do us much good since in WLC 12 we played in a very poor group. I mean the second place team had a 4-5 record while we had a 6-3.Don't expect the same showing this time. But I do think we'll make it into the knockout stages, because the other two teams competing I've never heard of.
Huh, yea John don't go down that road you just insulted Erathore, they are very good in many sports. But however though this group may just be the most competitive and who will and wont continue on, might come down to the last two days. I'm not expecting any team to blow out of the gates from the very start. I'll predict we'll get a 5-4 record.
Well I'm going all out and saying we'll go 7-2.

The opening ceremony flew by. A record crowd, later counted at 24,153, flooded the Taa'kai National Stadium in Vengife. The capital of the aboriginal Kytlerians was an ideal location for a celebration of the nation's convoluted history and its eventual arrival on the world stage. After all, never before had thirty-one other countries come here for a sporting competition; yes, there was the Baptism of Iron, but that was half the size and far less significant. This was the moment that would cement the Kytlerians' global reputation, one way or another.

The playing field was surrounded by flaming torches carried by local residents of all origins* - white European, aboriginal, Vephra, Asian, mixed. Twenty torches in all, each being passed onto each other in a relay fashion, albeit at a slow marching pace, not a running pace. A gap was left at the stadium entrance for a gaggle of traditional aboriginal dancers to take to the field and perform a tribal dance that is probably best left undescribed, in honesty, but involved some non-trivial movement in the hip area. Then came a group of mixed-origin schoolchildren, geared in lacrosse uniform, passing to each other, while the slow-motion torch relays (plural) resumed around them.

There then came a stylised depiction of the discovery of the peninsulae by the explorer James Kytler, whose name was given to the bay, and by implication to the nation. Kytler was known as a tall man with an impressive beard, and he was portrayed by the tall, bearded, camp, and much-loved Kytlerian actor Richard Neville. Complete with a scarcely-needed microphone for him to blare out lines that made him sound very much like the large ham he is. "AHOY! A PLACE TO STAY!" was one of the less execrable lines. Somehow you sensed they messed up their chance to gain an international reputation; where was feminist rapper from WorldVision, Vinny Carter, when you needed him? Even his yellow suit would be welcome now.

Anyway, after that, a bunch of fake fighting to depict the nation's colonisation, and eventually a ludicrous scene featuring a giant cardboard version of the farmhouse where the Kytlerian constitution was signed, the ceremony eventually ended. The pomp and circumstance had, not before time, been cut off. The action was about to begin, starting with the Kytlerians facing the Abdians...

* the Kytlerians use the term "origin" in lieu of "race" or "ethnicity", at least in official communications. For more on that, and the nation as a whole, peek at the Kytlerian NSwiki page.

The normal view of reserve players is that they're little better than benchwarmers, occasionally coming in when someone's injured or the game takes a turn for the blowout. This is the case with many teams. But we do not play that way.

A reserve on the Allamunnic national lacrosse squad gets plenty of playing time, rotating freely with some of the best players in the world. We are some of the most motivated players anywhere, up there with starters from other nations, and just as skilled to boot. I mean that has to be the case. How else did I account for four out of our ten goals? Three of us found the net against Crotunda, and one of them was Cassie, who did the exact same as me, putting four on our opponents, while John Dahlgren knocked in two.

Mostly what people noticed was that two of our players, one of them a reserve (that's me!) outscored an entire opposing team.

We ain't two-time champions for nothing. And Coach McDowell made it abundantly clear that last year's 4-5, playoff-missing finish was not in any way acceptable. And so we'd practiced our hearts out every week since then. We were looking for our chance to come back. It started here. Which is exactly what I was thinking as I snapped each shot past that hapless goalie. Memory of that finish was probably what was driving Cassie, too, as she abused the goalie as badly as I did. It was probably in Dahlgren's head as he put in the last goal of the game to put Crotunda away with three minutes to go. I bet it was in every player's head and heart as they played a physical game to give us the chances to do our good work.

Good teams fall sometimes. It's the champions that get back up. And we are champions, or my name isn't Gaarutt Aronbacher.

Havana Tribute
Big Victory in Western Cuba's first game at WLC XIII

Image

Western Cuba celebrates after a 10-8 victory against Delaclava.

Santa Mordana, Kytler Peninsulae--- Their was a whole list of questions for Western Cuba following the announcement of them entering the World Lacrosse Championships Thirteen. The questions were as such. Why did Western Cuba sign up for the World Lacrosse Championships. Can they even form a team. Can they find a coach, can they win a game, and finally will they be an embarrassment?

Well all those questions were practically answered. Western Cuba shocked lacrosse fans by upseting Delaclava and winning Match Day One. Western Cuba played hard and in the end deserved victory. Attack Alfonso Delgado was player of the game for Western Cuba today, scoring 6 goals for Western Cuba. Fidel Santiago and Franco Munoz each would put in a goal while Hector Gracia would record two also.

" I'm shocked kind of myself. ", admits Marcus Guzman. Head Coach of the National Lacrosse team. " However though I ain't surprised on how hard my team worked today. For the last several months we've been preparing for this, and I'm really impressed on how we came out on top. "

In Group D action Howdeellow tied Arcatea, 10-10 therefore giving Western Cuba the lead in Group D. " It's to early though to call this a major victory, we still got the rest of the Group Stage to play though. ", comments Goalkeeper Jorge Ramirez. " We got to work hard everyday like we have for the last several months to achieve full satisfaction and victory. "

Group D play continues tomorrow when Western Cuba faces off against Arcatea in Match Day 2, at Westpoint Field. Tickets are still sold out but are still available through Match Day 4 to Match Day 9. If you want some me sure to visit the Western Cuban Sports Association's website. HBS will be showing the game tomorrow so make sure to support your national team.

Please note that I haven't yet plugged in the tiebreakers correctly into these tables. Ties will be separated first on head-to-head record between tied teams, then on goal difference, then goals scored, RP bonus over the entire group stage, and the drawing of lots (in that order, and if it goes to the last of these I will eat my hat).

There could hardly have been a more nervous atmosphere inside BN Field as over 21,000 took their seats in a baseball field bizarrely used for lacrosse. The Kytlerians had been held to a draw by the Abdians in the opening match - something that was definitely not in the plan - and although others were doing worse, the fans expected better, especially against Djocoranga. Yet when the unknown debutants took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, the fans started booing furiously. Djocoranga focused their attacks along the right side of the field, towards the main stand, seemingly to rattle the hosts, and it seemed to work as the Kytlerians committed a number of fouls.

Then, just before the end of a humbling quarter, Aaron Nairn's stunning long pass found Ock Fils, who set up substitute and club-mate Ciaran Mulhern for a simple finish. The mood lifted, the pressure eased, and the Kytlerians took control with five unanswered goals in the second quarter to lead 6-3 at the half-time interval. Simple, right? Oh, if only. Djocoranga rallied in the third quarter with four goals, and trailed only 8-7 as the final period began; Whootung Whosash, worryingly, was culpable on at least two of the goals, and he was forced off through injury early in the fourth quarter to be replaced by Walter Smith. Seconds later, he was beaten by a speculative long-range shot and the scores were level. Two minutes later, a similar effort went in off the inside of the post, and the minnows led again.

A desperate bid to change. Furious cries from the entire coaching staff. Something had to change. Substitute Tee Short, who has been on form in the KLL, levelled the scores at 9-9. Caine McNally, with a trademark thunderbolt, gave the Kytlerians the lead. Seconds later, though, it was 10-10, and as the clock ticked to the final two minutes, it remained that way. Could the Kytlerians be held to another draw, this one far more embarrassing than the last?

Not if Ock Fils had anything to do with it. The aboriginal-Vephra, still only 20, was the face of this competition, a symbol of everything the Kytlerian nation wants to be seen as - a symbol of diversity, strength, and proud defiance. His furious burst from a deep position after a Djocoranga attack was broken up by Cameron Higginson symbolised how much this meant to him, and it was he who picked up a pass from Mulhern to tuck deftly low into the net. With 95 seconds to go, the Kytlerians led, and there would, in the end, be no more scoring.

"Surely it's not going to get harder than this?" cried an exasperated Mulhern after the game. It's certainly not likely to get more nerve-jangling.

Slightly (ha) late roster, apologies.
Polar Islandstates is not a nation renowned for its lacrosse finesse. The sport is small, and a national league doesn't not exist. Nonetheless these part time sportsmen (aside from those good enough to have secured a career in the Kytler league) go to the World Lacrosse Championships to represent their country, and wave the lacrosse flag within the Federation.

Havana Tribute
Western Cuba loses close one, but holds Group Lead

Havana City, Havana---, The Western Cuban National Lacrosse Team lost their second game yesterday in the World Lacrosse Championship's but played hard. Western Cuba was shocked by Arcatea who recorded their first victory in this year's World Lacrosse Championships. The game was close but Western Cuba would lose by one. In both games Western Cuba lost they were lost by no more than 1 point.

Carlos Rios played well yesterday, replacing fellow Attacker Nevada Rivera who was sidelined in Western Cuba's game before that when he hurt his leg, spraining it while trying to catch a pass from Midfielder Franco Munoz. Western Cuba would defeat Delaclava in that game 12-8. Carlos Rios scored 3 goal's in the game with Alfonso Delgado scoring 4 points, Hector Gracia scoring 2 points, and Leonardo Castro scoring 1 point.

Jorge Ramirez struggled in goal yesterday. Allowing 11 goals, and blocking very few shots in what other wise has been a good WLC for him. " We struggled a bit yesterday against a team we should of beat. Arcatea played very well though and fought hard and deserved the victory. ", comments Head Coach Marcus Guzman. " We just have to play hard throughout the rest of the classic, and make it to the knockout rounds.

Match Day 6 continues tonight with Western Cuba facing off against second place Howdeellow who beat Delaclava yesterday by a score of 8-7. Western Cuba's only other lose came up against Howdeellow who beat Western Cuba by a score of 13-12. Tonight's game will be broadcast on NST. So if your a lacrosse fan, or if you want to show support for your country make sure to watch the game.

DBSC WLC 13 Coverage

Lacrosse is definatley not Darmen's sport. Only 56% of the population of Darmen said Lacrosse was one of their top 10 sports according to the 2011 "Darmen Sports Census". But the team has done suprisingly well at the 13th World Lacrosse Championships, and with only 4 games remaining, Darmen's hopes of advancing to the knockout stages look good.

Darmen started off this latest campaign with a 13-10 win over rivals Wolfmanne, which sent quite a few citizens into a frenzy. Following the huge win over Wolfmanne, Darmen struggled against Soviet Canuckistan, eventualy settling for a 10-10 draw. Despite this, Darmen found themselves on top of the Group. Darmen then drew against Sarzonia, 6-6, falling to second in the Group, only one point beind Wolfmanne.

With the first portion of the Group Stage finished, Darmen next turned again to Wolfmanne, this time losing 12-15. Again, fans went into a frenzy, this time rioting after the loss. Head Coach Dilbert Alexander said, "We played well, but Wolfmanne just plaed with their heart and soul. We need to do that as well going forward."

The team responded to the coaches criticism by defeating Soviet Canuckistan 12-9. Now Darmen will face Sarzonia again, and the team is ready to go. Fans are excited as a win could very well put Darmen into first place, and go a long way to helping Darmen advance to the knockout stages.

Following the match against Sarzonia, Darmen will travel to the host nation, The Kytler Peninsulae, for the final portion of the Group Stage, and hopefully, a deep run into the knockout round.
