There is no criminal statute pertaining specifically to arson. Destruction of life or property by means of fire is legally the same as the same performed using a hammer, a vehicle, or anything else: The perpetrator must pay compensation of equal or greater value to the damage caused, and if this exceeds his projected ability to do so, then he is sentenced to death. Anyway, the punishment for arson is anywhere from one to forty years in prison, determinable by the judge. If the arson results in the death of a creature, intended or not, the arsonist will also be charged with murder, which is a capital crime. Arson in and of itself, however, is not eligible to be a capital crime, unless the building burnt is a religious institution (e.g. churches, synagogues, temples, mosques), in which case it is.
